We would be his third club. At 26 now he'd be at his peak so what we've seen of him the year or so is what we'll get. IMO if we got Simmonds he'd be more of a fill in type to take over from Stafford when he retires as well as allowing a young ruckman time to develop. If Otto stays would allow Otto to move forward where he should be played.

Hey we signed Marsh as a third ruckman.....so if you actually want a third ruckman who can do something this guy is as good as it gets in the draft....
Stafford, Simmonds and Otto....you cant really go wrong with strong contested marking.....throw in Richo up front and a firing Gas down back, you wonder how we would ever lose a contested mark....then you remember Ray Hall and say Oh Thats how!

I reckon Simmonds is more of a forward than Ottens is. More agile, quicker, and a better mark on the lead.
Ottens is probably better when flying for a mark and a better contested mark, though he hasn't been showing these qualities lately.

Otto use to do these things and was also good for a big man below his knees but like the other few of our players who actually have talent their confidence has been shot to bits under Spud and Co's "coaching and gameplan" on top of their dopey teammates who couldn't hit the side of a barn.

If we manage to keep Ottens and use him mainly as a forward as indicated by Wallace, Simmonds would be a very handy pick up. Can also go forward and kick a goal as already indicated.

Fremantle big man in demand in Melbourne

Uncontracted Fremantle big man Troy Simmonds is fielding offers from Melbourne clubs, with the Kangaroos and Richmond among the suitors.
Simmonds' manager, Ron Joseph, said last night that while the player's preference was to remain with the Dockers, he was not satisfied with negotiations with Fremantle. "We haven't settled a contract with Fremantle," Joseph said. "Negotiations have gone on for a good part of the balance of the season. We're not where we want to be.
"I think that Troy's preference has always been to stay at Fremantle. He's now in a situation where he's listening to a few Melbourne clubs."
The Kangaroos and Richmond have confirmed their interest in the forward-ruckman, a Victorian who was traded to the Dockers by Melbourne at the end of 2001. The Kangaroos are in the market for a key forward, having struggled in attack since the departure of Wayne Carey, though they have some promising young talls on their list.
Richmond, too, is interested in Simmonds, 25, though the Tigers have financial constraints that will impose limits on their player payments.

Apparently Freo have offered Simmonds a 3 year deal at $280K but he wants 4 years. According to a post on Dockerland we and the Swans have agreed to a 4 year deal to get him to come over. The Swans have also offered him $400K (ed. He's not worth that kind of dough and we wouldn't be able to match it even if we were that stupid). If the Dockers don't do a trade then we of course can use our first PSD pick to get him.

A CONTRACTUAL dispute between Fremantle and ruckman Troy Simmonds might lead to him returning to Melbourne to join his third club.
The Dockers have offered the out-of-contract big man a new three-year deal but Simmonds' management is demanding a four-year contract, according to Fremantle.
The 26-year-old, who has had three years in Western Australia after being recruited from Melbourne, is being sought by Richmond and the Kangaroos.
The likelihood of Brad Ottens moving to Sydney has strengthened Richmond's interest in Simmonds.
The Tigers, who could threaten to pick up Simmonds as an uncontracted player in the December pre-season draft with the first selection, view him as a back-up and eventual replacement for 30-year-old Greg Stafford.

The way things look to be turning out, we’ll have to take someone with experience, regardless of age. Because even if we draft an 18-20 y.o., we can’t expect him to play ruck/kpp for 22 rounds, if he plays at all next season. He’ll get killed. We can’t rely on Staff to play a full season and Hall’s just a stop-gap measure in there.
Might seem like a short-term fix to go down this track, but we may have no other option.

You're spot on TS. Wonder what we'll offer Freo for Simmonds or if we can do a trade in regards with Otto pick him up in the PSD. A bit concerned Simmonds wants a 4 year deal but we're caught out with our lack of talls. Especially ruckman :-\.

HEATH BLACK, one of St Kilda's best-performed players of the finals series, will seek a return to Perth during next week's trade period, possibly courtesy of a swap with Fremantle's off-contract ruckman Troy Simmonds.
Black last year narrowly missed a return to the Fremantle Dockers, his first AFL club, after the requisite paperwork from his management landed at AFL headquarters a few minutes past the 2pm player-exchange deadline.
Having served the final season in a contract understood to be worth $400,000, Black would have had to agree to a substantial pay cut to remain at Moorabbin. However, it is understood the greatest pressure on Black to return west is not financial but family.
Black is from Melbourne originally, but met his Perth-born wife while playing for the Dockers. The couple now have two young children and Black's wife, in particular, is keen to return home.
A Black-Simmonds swap could be facilitated by player agent Ron Joseph, who handles the affairs of both players. St Kilda is one of four clubs pursuing Fremantle's 196cm ruckman-cum-forward, who has reached an impasse in contract negotiations with the Dockers.
Fremantle has offered Simmonds a three-year contract. It is understood the 26-year-old is seeking a minimum four-year deal, which would effectively secure the remainder of his playing days.
The Kangaroos have offered Simmonds a five-year contract to entice him to Arden Street, while Carlton and Richmond have both expressed strong interest.
Black was St Kilda's outstanding player in its qualifying-final debacle against Brisbane and a solid contributor in the club's six-point preliminary-final loss to eventual premiers Port Adelaide. After experiencing initial problems settling into the St Kilda playing group, he has become an important cog in one of the AFL's most talented, emerging midfielders.
St Kilda will be hoping to announce at tonight's best and fairest awards that another key component of that midfield, Luke Ball, has agreed to terms to stay at the club for another two years.
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas last night said Black had not expressed his desire to leave the club directly and that he remained a valued player. But having negotiated the 2004 season with a makeshift rucking division, Thomas did not rule out a play for Simmonds.
"It is still a long, long way before Simmonds becomes a viable option but if he does, we will be interested," Thomas said.
Conversely, Fremantle chief executive Cameron Schwab said the club was determined to retain Simmonds, but confirmed its interest in Black.
Simmonds began his career with Melbourne and played a brief, ignominious role in the Demons' 2000 grand-final loss to Essendon, when he was knocked unconscious in the opening quarter by a brutal bump from Michael Long.
Although Fremantle coach Chris Connolly has developed Simmonds into a key forward, he has also played a role as a high-leaping ruckman.
Negotiations are continuing between Richmond and would-be suitors over the services of Brad Ottens, the biggest name to enter pre-trade discussions thus far.
Sydney and Geelong have made clear their interest in Ottens, who could either satisfy the Cats' demands for a key forward or Sydney's need for a replacement ruckman for the ageing Jason Ball.

Richmond is leading the race to secure Fremantle forward-ruckman Troy Simmonds, who has confirmed his wish to be traded back to a Melbourne club.
On the same day when Port Adelaide's Josh Carr sought a trade to the Dockers, Fremantle learnt that Simmonds - who has been the subject of frenzied bidding by Melbourne clubs - would be leaving Perth.
The Tigers emerged at the weekend as the frontrunners for Simmonds' services and, with first choice in the pre-season draft for uncontracted players, they are in a strong trading position.
Carlton has also been a keen bidder for Simmonds, who was initially offered about $900,000 over three years to remain at Fremantle, while the Kangaroos were sufficiently keen to offer him a four-year contract.
St Kilda, on the look-out for a ruckman, has also shown interest in the 26-year-old forward-ruckman.
Simmonds' management has indicated to Richmond that the Tigers, at this stage, are leading the pack in the contest for his signature. Simmonds is holidaying in Thailand.
Unlike rival suitors such as Carlton, the Kangaroos and St Kilda, Richmond is in a position to recruit Simmonds without satisfying Fremantle's demands, because of its pole position in the (pre-season) draft.
But the Tigers intend to trade with Fremantle, and will discuss potential Simmonds deals with the Dockers at the opening of trade week today.
Richmond football director Greg Miller yesterday said that Simmonds' management had indicated the Tigers were the frontrunners for the services of the former Demon, who has enjoyed a fruitful three seasons since he was traded to the Dockers at the end of 2001.
"That was the indication at this moment," Miller said, saying that the Tigers would discuss a trade with Fremantle today.
Miller said Richmond viewed Simmonds as a replacement for Brad Ottens, who is hoping to be traded to Geelong this week. The Tigers are badly in need of a ruckman to support the ageing Greg Stafford.
Simmonds rejected a lucrative offer from Fremantle, understood to be more than $300,000 a season over three years.
The Tigers, should they land him, are likely to need a four-year contract to match the Kangaroos, because they cannot afford to fork out more than $300,000 - about the amount they offered to Ottens to remain at Tigerland.
The Ottens trade will be the major domino of the trading period, with Richmond seeking two first-round draft choices - one of them inside the top 10 - in return for the follower-forward. While Geelong is Ottens' favoured destination, Sydney and the Kangaroos remain keen to trade for him

A BACK-UP ruckman who played just seven games this season looms as the key to unlocking this year's trade frenzy.
Melbourne's Darren Jolly has already been the subject of intense interest from several clubs and his destination appears certain to affect the future of the hottest name on the market - Richmond's Brad Ottens.
At every trade week, the big deal has to fall before the rest can flow. Where, how, and for what, will dominate today's meeting at Optus Oval of representatives of the 16 clubs with Ottens the key player to several deals.
Sydney, Richmond and Carlton are leading the charge for Jolly, 23, who, despite having a year to run on his contract, has told the Demons he no longer wants to play second fiddle to Jeff White.
Ottens has requested a trade from Richmond, preferably to Geelong, although it remains to be seen if a deal can be done.
The cashed-up Swans are keen on Ottens while the Kangaroos have also made the big-marking Tiger a priority.
Other big names seeking new homes this week include Port Adelaide's Josh Carr to Fremantle and Adelaide's Tyson Stenglein to West Coast.
Disgruntled pair Hawthorn's Nathan Thompson and Carlton's Lance Whitnall will be discussed but are unlikely to move.
Richmond has told Geelong it wants two first-round draft picks for Ottens which places the Cats in a tough situation.
Coach Mark Thompson has already stated he doesn't want to mess with the chemistry of his young team and won't be trading any of the rising stars in his midfield.
The only way the Cats, who have selection No. 16, can get a better pick is to deal players. Names that have been thrown around include Brent Moloney, Charlie Gardiner, David Spriggs, Corey Enright and Paul Chapman.
Another unheralded player who is creating plenty of interest is Western Bulldogs youngster Lindsay Gilbee.
Gilbee has told the Dogs he wants to be traded with his former coach Terry Wallace at Richmond showing interest along with Sydney, which has declared it is after experienced players rather than young draftees for next year.
Delisted Hawthorn midfielder Lance Picioane has three clubs chasing him with the Kangaroos, ahead of Essendon and Melbourne, the front-runner.
The deal could involve a direct player swap and low draft selections.
Kangaroos forward Leigh Harding is a possibility in the trade, although he has also been linked to Carlton.
Picioane was delisted in a post-season clean-out by the Hawks.
The relationship between Carlton and Whitnall appears set to continue.
Despite strong speculation Whitnall wanted out and that coach Denis Pagan was fed-up with Whitnall's weight issues, it's believed the 25-year-old will continue at the Blues.
His manager, Ricky Nixon, said yesterday no trade discussions had taken place.
Other high-profile players who have been the subject of trade rumours include West Coast pair Michael Gardiner and Daniel Kerr and out-of-contract Demons Russell Robertson and Clint Bizzell.
Eagles midfielder Chad Morrison has made it known he wants to return to Victoria and a solid finish to the season will ensure he has several suitors.
And it was revealed yesterday Demons backman Peter Walsh is also looking for a new club.
Veteran St Kilda pair Justin Peckett and Andrew Thompson will play on next season after being offered one-year contracts.

When you look at the ruckmen available - he'd be the best "fit" for the Tigers. He is mobile, only 26 (which would normally be too old for my liking but OK for a ruckman) and can pinch hit in the forward line. He doesn't appear to be one of those ruckman that would have to sit on the bench for a rest.

We have Freo over the barrel on this one. Simmonds had told them to trade him to Richmond and no one else. If they dont like what we have offered he will tell them to stick it and we will get him in the PSD.
If Freo want to get something for him then they will pretty much have to take what we offer. Obviously they arent going to take a 5th/6th round draft pick, but i reckon we should offer them Fiora.
Maybe Fiora could go to Port along with another Docker and Simmonds to Richmond and Carr to Freo.
