Tue, Feb 10, 09INJURY-plagued Richmond midfielder Mark Coughlan will miss this weekend's NAB Cup clash with Fremantle due to soreness in his right knee, but the club says preliminary indications are that it is not a serious problem.
The 2003 best-and-fairest has had two knee reconstructions which led to chronic hamstring issues, injuries which have combined to keep him sidelined since round 12, 2006.
Coughlan looked good in the club's intra-club match last Thursday, but felt soreness in the knee today.
Richmond's football operations manager Ross Monaghan said the club was taking a cautious approach, despite it not appearing to be a major problem.
"Mark was just doing some light training and goal kicking this morning, just a little bit of twisting and turning, nothing unusual, and it turns out he's slightly damaged his cartilage," he told richmondfc.com.au on Tuesday night.
"It's not severe – it's being checked out by a specialist either later on tonight or first thing in the morning.
"Probably the worst-case scenario would be an arthroscope and missing two or three weeks, I would guess.
"It's early stages, but it's nothing to do with the knee problems he's had in the past – there's no reconstruction required, nothing like that.
"So it's not a massive alarm bell, it's just a little bit of a setback for him."
Monaghan said everyone at the club was amazed at how well Coughlan had worked through his series of injuries, and said he expected that Coughlan would be available for selection in round one of the season proper.
"He's been amazing in the amount of work he's done to get back to the stage he's at, and everyone was just looking forward to him having a game this week," Monaghan said.
"He got through last week's practice game with no problems at all, and this little incident has occurred.
"But like I say, it's not a tragedy. It's certainly disappointing for him and everyone else involved, but we're hoping he'll be back as good as gold in a few weeks time.
"Two to three weeks is probably worst-case scenario, so he's still every chance of playing in the last round or two of the NAB Cup, and being right for round one, so we can certainly say that's still a possibility."
Coughlan had successful treatment on his troublesome hamstring in Germany last season, which allowed him to return to the track with Coburg for the last few games of the year, and that success had flowed through into the pre-season.
Just three weeks ago he was looking forward to his first AFL game in nearly three years, and declared: "It's pretty exciting – I've done most of the pre-season, and I'm just trying to get through the rest of January now and hopefully put my hand up for that first game against Fremantle over there.
"I'm feeling pretty good in the body - this year's just been a bonus, being able to do a pre-season and the group's looking pretty good for the year, so I'm pretty excited about maybe being a part of that."

Looks like you would have got your Carton MT...... :banghead

Anything Cogs can give us in 2009 is a bonus. I was (and still am) very pessimistic about Cogs chances of making an impact in our side this year but he has surprized me with his progress to date. I thought even if he made it back he had lost his pace and agility and would never be able to adapt to the pace of AFL football and fast midfield in general. I am still to be convinced that he has but I am amazed at his progress to date and I hope this is the first and last setback he has in 2009 because this year is his last chance.

Agree with all of that.
Not many have recovered from dual recos.
Let's hope that it is REALLY only a minor setback but the club has history when it comes to saying one thing & ..
-
Tezza (at Club80 last night) said that it was very minor - he was saying it would likely put Cogs back 2 weeks
-
The poor guy can't get a break :bandhead
Is it the same knee as the two recos?
Let's hope for Cogs' sake it is as minor. Still it makes you feel uncertain about his footy future when he's suffered another injury within a week after the first practice/intraclub match :-\

Coughlan still eyes round one AFL return
John Salvado | February 11, 2009 - 1:49PM
Richmond insist that Mark Coughlan could still make a fairytale AFL comeback in round one against Carlton, despite the midfielder suffering another knee injury.
Coughlan has not played a senior game for the Tigers since mid-2006 when he underwent the first of two knee reconstructions.
He also suffered chronic hamstring problems last season.
Coughlan had seemed due for a change of luck and was set to play in Sunday's opening round pre-season Cup clash against Fremantle before feeling soreness in his right knee on Tuesday.
The 2003 best and fairest winner will undergo surgery to repair a slight meniscus tear.
It will put back Coughlan's playing return for a few weeks, but the club is hopeful he will be fit for selection in the latter stages of the pre-season.
If all goes well, he could return for his first home-and-away match in three years against arch-rivals Carlton on March 26 before a huge crowd at the MCG.
"Mark Coughlan and a knee doesn't sound great, but we think it's only a minor setback for him," Tigers assistant coach Wayne Campbell said on Wednesday.
"It's not ideal for him, but it's not catastrophic by any stretch.
"He's surprisingly upbeat, he's a mentally strong kid to have been through what he has."
Campbell said that before the latest setback, Coughlan had made remarkable progress since the club began pre-season training in October.
"It was just going to be a fairytale story and we think it still will be," said Campbell.
"If all went well he could play in NAB Cup week three.
"Whether that happens or not, I don't know, but certainly round one versus Carlton is not out of the equation."

Geez, I hope Cogs gets a chance to play competitive AFL matches over a few consecutive weeks so that we can really determine the rehab success.
Best Wishes Cogs .... :pray
-
Absolutely best wishes but my expectations of him having much impact at all this year just took a considerable step backwards. Realistically he'll be lucky to play 8 games.
-
Just saw Cambo on the Ch 10 news say the meniscus tear is in the reco knee :-\. The only positive is if it is only minor and he is back in a couple of weeks then he's already got the preseason fitness base behind him.

Is there such a thing as a 'minor tear' on a knee that's had a double reco already? :-[

Considering it's not a tear in ligament then while it's in the same knee, it's not the same part of the knee that was reco'd
-
Probably the only positive aspect here for the club is that he no longer our best midfielder and his return will just be just adding further depth to the already formidable centresquare line-up.
Cogs was facing a huge uphill battle just to claim a spot in the team even if he was at full fitness given his reported loss of speed and endurance but now this tear could herald the return of his injury woes to boot.
I wish his every success because when he was on song he possessed most of what I admire in a player - couragous, strong, skillful, fast and fit. I still think he possesses the first three traits in abundance but the juries out for me whether he has regained the last two.
Lets hope his Fairy Story comeback continues and doesn't return to the Horror Story it once was...

One of the members of Tiger-Talk is a doctor and he posted this info yesterday:
"Meniscal(ie cartilage) tear - if it is only a small tear, it should only
delay him for 2-3 weeks. If a non-athlete had a small tear it is often
reasonable to rest the knee for about 6 weeks, and provided it isn't
catching then they would be alright. The dilemma with athletes is, that
if they are no better after 6 weeks, they then need an arthroscopy,
which delays recovery even further. The worry is what damage has been
done to the cartilage, and what bit of bone has been exposed by the
injury. If the exposed bone is in a weight-bearing spot , then
unfortunately he's in big trouble. We will have to wait for the report
from the surgeon."

I don't know anything about it either Ox. There was a server problem yesterday caused a couple of threads to have an incorrect reply count and HTTP 500 error messages so the database tables needed a quick repair job. The repair shouldn't have deleted any posts but that's the only forum alteration the admins did yesterday. We certainly didn't delete any posts ???.

Well that gives you confidence :-\ :P
I see Kosi is injured again as well. Most sides have a player who can't take a trick with injuries.

Welcome back TM! ;D
As you know, I was also skeptical about his chances of success but believed the risk to the club was worth the potential return. My opinion hasn't changed and like you said - we will have a good idea around mid-season whether he has a career or not.
