Ben Cousins has moved into a new Melbourne home
Sunday Herald Sun | Ellen Whinett and Eleni Hale | February 22, 2009

CONTROVERSIAL Richmond recruit Ben Cousins has moved into a new home in Melbourne's bayside suburbs.

The former West Coast player is renting a double-storey, renovated Edwardian cottage on a leafy suburban street. The property was advertised at $775 a week.

Cousins, driving a $56,000 Commodore with a mystery woman in the passenger seat, came and went from the house during the week.

"I've got nothing to say, mate," a smiling Cousins said when approached by the Sunday Herald Sun.

Since his move to Melbourne, the footy star had been house-sitting a home belonging to Richmond president Gary March in Middle Park and had been seen out enjoying the cafes and restaurants in Albert Park's Victoria Ave and Port Melbourne's Bay St.

But he has now taken up residence in the cottage, which has ample security, including an alarm system and surveillance cameras in the entrance.

His move comes just in time for him to get settled before his Richmond debut, expected to be on Thursday night against Collingwood at Docklands.

A shirtless Cousins wandered around the house yesterday, looking toned, tanned and ready for the much-anticipated game.

Tradesmen and carpet cleaners visited the house during the week and moving boxes were piled out the front.

Friends also paid visits during the week.

According to the real estate blurb for the property, walking through the home is "like paging through a glossy magazine".

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house has a state-of-the-art kitchen, study and alfresco entertaining area.

Curiously, it also has a "parent's domain".

Built-in wardrobes, central heating, reverse-cycle airconditioning, stone vanity cabinets in the bathroom and french doors complete the look.

The cottage, rented fully furnished, has modern furniture and appliances, including a minimalist white couch in the lounge room and sophisticated black-and-white decor in the master bedroom.

But wait there's more Herald-Sun fluff about Cuz not on the web.....

* CRICKET chief James Sutherland was almost speechless as he left cricket headquarters in Melbourne last week with bad boy Andrew Symonds. A silver Commodore pulled up and a bare-chested driver wound down the window and yelled out his support for the troubled cricketer. The man behind the wheel was none other than AFL bad boy Ben Cousins.

Cuz on a winner
* FORMER Richmond footy chief Greg Miller has reached ``Krakouer territory'' on his caravan trek around Australia and rang to tell us he was at the Mt Barker races this week looking at the inner arena where Jim and Phil learned their craft.
But Greg had a more interesting report, having just watched a nag named Impact Rating romp home in the first race.
He thought it an omen that the horse, which won last year's Albany Cup, was owned by the Tiger recruit Ben Cousins and a few of his footy mates, namely Michael Gardiner, Dean Cox, Drew Banfield and Chad Morrison. The boys are looking to add the Esperance Cup to their racing portfolio this year.

Wallace admits in today's Age that Cousins' private life is being encroached unfairly...

Star gets stripe and some unwanted attention
Steve Butler | February 23, 2009

STAR Richmond recruit Ben Cousins will step into the black and gold for the first time on Thursday in the Tigers' NAB Cup match against Collingwood.

But while Tigers coach Terry Wallace has praised Cousins for the way he had handled the feverish attention since the club selected him in last year's pre-season draft, he claimed the constant scrutiny of his private life was unfair.

The trend continued yesterday as thousands of Richmond fans swarmed around Cousins at the club's family day in suburban Melbourne.

And yesterday, as Melbourne held a day of mourning for the recent bushfire tragedy, a story about Cousins renting a new home filled most of page three in a leading newspaper.

Wallace said the interest and adulation in the star on-baller outstripped anything he had seen as a three-time Hawthorn premiership player in that club's golden era of the 1970s and 1980s.

"I've never seen anything like it," Wallace said. "Certainly for our playing group, and even for myself, having been around a lot longer than the players, it gives you some sort of understanding of what happens overseas with rock stars and movie stars. Even at one stage today, he went to the toilet and there were 200 people following him.

"It's a bit bizarre and I don't think there's any doubt that it's over the top. Does it encroach on his privacy? Yes, it does.

"He's handling it extremely well, but I think everyone finds it disappointing. I don't think anyone needs to know what's happening in his private life and whether he's having dinner or who he's having dinner with."

Easy way to fix that, have a spicy Indian dish full of red meat before you go to the toilet.

I don't think too many people will hang around the toilet after he's backed that one out!  :lol

Caro just now on 3aw claims there's friction behind the scenes between the RFC and the media.

We're apparently talking to our AFL network - a former RFC ruckman in charge of the AFLPA (very subtle Caro lol) - about things getting out of hand with the Cousins (ie. the story and pics about his house).

She claims there's never been more suspicion and antagonism between clubs and the media. Hawthorn too are upset with regard to Franklin although they have backed off a bit recently.

Fair enough Richmond and it's about bloody time other clubs drew a line in the sand too!!

I cannot stand the whole paparazzi element that has snuck into the press since Wayne Carey shagged his skipper's missus.

More Herald-Sun gossip  ::) ....... this story isn't on the web

Blue belle Ben's close mate
Herald Sun, 25-02-2009, Pg: 025, CONFIDENTIAL

THE identity of the mystery woman snapped with a shirtless Ben Cousins last week has been revealed as Elli Johnston, daughter of former Carlton champion Wayne Johnston.

Johnston, 21, an events co-ordinator and part-time model, is a close friend of the Richmond recruit -- but apparently not a girlfriend.

The pair were snapped coming and going from Cousins' new rental pad in one of Melbourne's leafy bayside suburbs last week.

Johnston, who apparently has a boyfriend, did not wish to comment on her friendship with Cousins yesterday.

Cousins' current partner, a woman known only as Maylea, is in Perth.

She and the former footy bad boy are reportedly long-time friends.

She is a naturopath and is believed to have two children from a previous marriage -- which explains why he has rented a home with a "parent's domain''.

Jackson defends Cousins’ privacy

RICHMOND tagger Daniel Jackson has gone into bat for teammate Ben Cousins following an article in the Sunday Herald Sun that 'crossed the lines of decency'.

The page three story featured pictures of the former Eagle moving into his newly rented home last week and a line from Cousins refusing comment after he was approached by journalists from the newspaper.

Cousins was described by the reporters as 'shirtless' and 'wandering around the house' throughout the piece which also directed readers to the paper's website for more photos of the occasion.

The 30-year-old has attracted almost unprecedented media attention since the club recruited him last December and while Jackson said a certain degree of scrutiny was to be expected, he felt the latest article had been a clear invasion of privacy.

"It's probably fair to say what happened on the weekend was crossing the lines of decency," Jackson said from the Lexus Centre on Wednesday.

"I'm not speaking from experience because it hasn't happened to me, but to have journos floating around in front of his house … I think a lot of people out there – would agree that it's just a little bit too much."

Jackson said the players had benefitted from the arrival of the Brownlow Medallist and acknowledged the positive effect Cousins' arrival had had on the club's supporter base even if things were likely to be a bit different around the place during his tenure.

"I don't quite know if it will ever be 'normal' with him around, but we expected when we drafted him that there would be a lot more hype," he said.

"There have been plenty of benefits with membership and we had huge support at our family day."

Cousins has provided an excellent example on the training track according to Jackson who feels his own game will be helped by the advice he sought and has freely received from the prolific onballer.

"For me personally he's been a fantastic asset because I've been playing on these types of players doing a lot of tagging," he said.

"So I pick his brain all the time and ask 'what gives you the s**** the most, Ben?' He tells me straight out so I can use that against other players.

"He's a fantastic addition to our team and we're really looking forward to having him out there."

Cousins quickly left the bar.

Scrutiny makes Cousins growl
Courtney Walsh | February 26, 2009 | The Australian

ON the eve of Ben Cousins's latest comeback, the new Tiger has confided in his teammates that the close attention is giving him "the poos".

But Richmond fans hoping the recruit can match the 39 possessions he garnered in a prior celebrated return for West Coast against Sydney in July 2007, should fear not, for it is not a physical ailment that willprevent him playing in an NAB Cup quarter-final against Collingwood at Telstra Dome tonight.

Nor is Cousins referring to the fascination surrounding his debut as a Tiger a little over two months after his career seemed dead, though undoubtedly the attention is irksome.

Cousins's short, sharp utterances to a television journalist who attempted to quiz him as he arrived at training on Tuesday -- a scene remarkably similar to an episode outside Subiaco Oval two years ago when a tweaked hamstring aborted an initial comeback two weeks before the Sydney encounter -- betrayed his annoyance, while teammate Daniel Jackson expressed outrage yesterday at pictures of the fallen star's house being run in a Sunday paper.

Call for 'fair go' as D-day looms for Cousins
West Australian
26th February 2009, 6:15 WST

Staunch members of Richmond’s old guard have strongly fallen in behind Tigers coach Terry Wallace’s plea for an end to invasions of privacy for prized recruit Ben Cousins.

As the recovering drug addict prepares for his first game in 18 months against Collingwood tonight at Telstra Dome, several former stars agreed the media circus around him was out of control.

The 30-year-old’s private life has been regularly exposed since his drug-fuelled expulsion from the game, but Richmond identities Kevin Sheedy, Brendon Gale and Peter Wilson yesterday said he should just be allowed to play.

Wallace said that the unfair spotlight on Cousins was unlike anything else he had seen in his 25 years at the elite level of the game.

Sheedy, who played 251 games for the Tigers before his legendary coaching career at Essendon, was as instrumental as anyone at Richmond in getting the club to select Cousins in the pre-season draft.

He called on the media and public to give the former West Coast Eagle more respect for his decision to again pursue a healthy life and believed that aspect was vastly more important than any impact his return would have on the football industry.

“I just wish him all the best,” Sheedy said. “It gives the other players a lot of confidence, but only time will tell. The only thing I feel is that he deserved another opportunity and he’s got it.

“All the talk in the world is irrelevant now that he’s got his chance, an opportunity. I don’t care about the footy side of it, I just want him to get his life back.”

Gale, a 244-game star with the Tigers and now chief executive of the AFL Players’ Association, revealed his pride in his old club’s decision to take the risky punt on Cousins.

He also claimed it was time for the critics to move on.

“We always insisted that he had the right to continue to play and once he was given that right (by the AFL), we were hopeful that he’d be drafted,” Gale said.

“That took place and I’m thrilled for Ben and his family. I couldn’t help but feel proud when the club took him even though it wasn’t without risk.

“Football is really important for Ben, that club is well-placed to be able to support him and, more importantly, I think he’s got some real value to add. He’s got the real ability to lift the standards around him with his football professionalism.

“Hopefully the effect will be a multiple one and while we all understand he is a high-profile player in a high-profile workplace, let’s hope going forward the focus is on his feats on the field. That would be tremendous for everyone.”

Wilson, who played 54 games for Richmond and then 117 for West Coast, including two premierships, said he had spoken at length with Cousins in Perth a fortnight ago and believed he was primed to return to the game.

Wilson was scathing about the constant intrusion on Cousins’ private life.

“He’s a good guy and a great footballer and he’s already been fantastic for Richmond,” Wilson said.

“I caught up with Cuzzy and he’s going really well, he’s working hard at it and he’s really happy to be in Melbourne. He looks really good, sounds better and seems to be really on top of things.

“But the constant, paparazzi-style rubbish is beyond a joke now. Ben’s got a long way to go and he’s still got a lot to offer and although he’s been through some tough times, he’s an elite player.

“It should be a feel-good story, but he’s been put through the ringer. People don’t understand the personal anguish that he and his family have gone through and that should be given more respect.

“Hopefully it will be the feel-good story, it should be if Ben can just be a solid contributor for another couple of years at AFL level.

“He doesn’t need to aim for the stars, but he can be proud of himself and his family can be proud of him for working so hard to get back.”

However last night it was reported that coaching legend Tommy Hafey had slammed Richmond's decision to draft Cousins, saying it was a mistake to give the recovering addict a second chance in the AFL.

Hafey, who coached more than 500 VFL/AFL games, reportedly told a players' function that the decision sent the wrong message to younger players.

“People ask me doesn’t he deserve a second chance? I say no, he doesn’t. He had his chance and he blew it," the self-confessed teetotaller said. "And if he plays really well, which would be great for Richmond, then that just sends the message to the younger guys that you can stuff up big time and a year later get back to your best. It just doesn’t work that way.”

Whilst I don't condone showing pics of where players live etc, I think it would appear seriously hypocritical to reap the massive rewards associated with having Ben Cousins in yellow n black yet on the other hand complain about him being the No1 human interest story in a fairly ho hum pre-season.  It wasnt much different fro Judd last year and Ben has much more story potential.  The Cuzz buzz has been magic and for its negatives has created the most positive vibe around the club since the 80s.   Call me over cautious but having the media circus follow him everywhere may also mean he stays on the straight and narrow also.  Everytime I get peeed off with teh media stories I check thew membership tally  :cheers

Prepare for open slather .....

TV to be granted greater access to footy stars
Jon Ralph | March 02, 2009

THE AFL's TV broadcasters are to be allowed unprecedented permission to interview players, as the league finds ways to maximise media rights deals.

Under the proposed agreement, networks will be able to request interviews with controversial stars including Ben Cousins, Alan Didak and Brendan Fevola, and the clubs will not be allowed to refuse them.

While several clubs, such as Essendon and Collingwood, are mostly willing to allow interviews to promote games, broadcasters say most are extremely uncooperative.

The AFL, aware a new TV rights deal will likely be struck during the global financial crisis, is determined to help its broadcasters find value from the five-year $780 million deal.

The determination from AFL clubs to limit media interviews is in stark contrast to American sport.

Many US sports have an open media policy.

AFL chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan confirmed an agreement was likely to be in place before the start of the season and Channel 10 head of football David Barham said yesterday football lovers would win from greater access to the league's stars.

All this just shows what a sad world we live in and although we can blame photographers and journos on this invasion of privacy the editors of the Herald Sun and all the other rags are just even more to blame for allowing these things to go to print. Enough is enough.

The we told u so element will then come out of the media if Ben does digress from his plan and strays off the path and then we will see how destructive those paparazzi can be.

Gee I hope someone told Hawthorn! Don't they require a request for interviews to be put in 4 days beforehand?

BEN Cousins, the troubled former West Coast football player who is now a chick-magnet for Richmond, won't talk to the media.

After his first game for Richmond, nosy reporters were kept well away and told that Cousins's mental state was not up to dealing with the insensitive questions journos might ask him about his personal life.

So to ensure he remains wrapped in many layers of cotton wool, his management has signed him up to a regular on-air spot with Melbourne radio station Nova 100.
