Eddie McGuire clears air on Kevin Sheedy
Mark Stevens | March 28, 2009
COLLINGWOOD president Eddie McGuire yesterday clarified explosive comments directed at Richmond as pressure mounted on the Tigers.
Amid the fallout from the Tigers' disastrous 83-point loss to Carlton on Thursday night, McGuire said coach Terry Wallace would face enormous scrutiny if the club slipped to a 0-3 record.
"If the Tigers get walloped the next two weeks, the call for Kevin Sheedy to come back to Tigerland will be like an avalanche," McGuire said.
When pressed further, McGuire added: "They play Melbourne in Round 4. What better way to start?"
McGuire, who made the comments in his role as commentator on radio station SEN, said yesterday it had nothing to do with his presidency at the Magpies.
"I said it as a commentator. Not as the president of Collingwood," McGuire said.
"I called the match yesterday. I've done what I've been doing for 30 years - talking about what was going on.
"The story's not what I said, because it was said in the context of sitting next to Grant Thomas, Dermott Brereton, Anthony Hudson and 8000 callers on the radio."
McGuire said he was predicting how the media would react to losses to Geelong and the Western Bulldogs in the next fortnight.
"Put it in context that this is what the media will start doing. This is not me saying that they're going to go after Sheedy or anything else," McGuire said.
"I made it very clear. I have been in the media for years and it's not unusual for coaches to come under absolute scrutiny.
"Particularly at the moment, you can see that the media will start pumping up Sheedy.
"I can tell you what will happen in the media - and that is they will be looking and Kevin Sheedy's the obvious person who is there around the club.
"The jungle drums will be beating and the supporters will all be saying get Sheedy back."
McGuire said it was not unusual to see coaches being "lopped" after Round 2.
He said he would not be calling Richmond president Gary March given the context of his comments.
March did not return calls yesterday and the Tigers bunkered down after the Round 1 thumping. Last month he took a dig at McGuire for talking about other clubs, including the Tigers.
"If it keeps Richmond in the papers, we're happy. I do think it's inappropriate for presidents to keep talking about other clubs," March said.
Wallace is in the final season of a five-year deal to coach the Tigers and was always going to face moments of pressure this season.
March has said Wallace's future will be decided mid-season.
Sheedy spoke to the players at the Tigers' season launch last week, telling them they could win the premiership and had to start believing in the possibility.

Thats the trouble,Eddie, you have a conflict of interests! Bout time you gave up one of your jobs and this wouldnt happen!
-
Good to hear Pie supporters ringing up after the game today telling Eddie to worry about their own club and coach rather than Richmond.

Lol

Given the magpies lost a game they wouldve pencilled in a week ago, maybe eddie can speculate about Mick malthouse's future. Hey eddie, maybe you can get plough to caretake the pies in the back half of the year?
-
Ater hearing Eddie this morning trying to justify his Sheedy comments, what he doesn't get is you can guarantee he would not say even with his commentator 'hat' on - "If Collingwood lose again, the call for Nathan Buckley to comeback to Magpieland and replace Malthouse will become an avalanche". Hence the conflict of interest he has in making such comments about other clubs.

Exactamundo GR12.
Eddie the Ego can't see it though. :P

I only heard a little of Eddie on SEN this morning but he was having a crack at Caro on Footy Classifieds...saying the show didn't rate highly and that she is the main one on the show...I would have thought the main person on that show was G. Lyon and Hutchy...they seem to be the compares...Caro and Thomas are the sideshows ...
Seems to me there is a slight war going on between Caro and Eddie...most likely cos of the article she wrote about Eddie a couple of weeks ago...from memory i think she said that in the past couple of years Eddie is too busy squaring up with people he has had a run in...Ironic he did that again today...Way to go Mr Pres
-
Channel 9 execs would be happy about Eddie bagging a Nine show ???
-
MT, I thought the same thing myself...9 vs 9 - interesting battle...i suppose all we can say is watch this space...there will be some casualties in this war between caro and eddie

Tool of the week?
Or does he already have the perpetual trophy?
-
Eddie's very quiet tonight :rollin

During the pre match, they were talking about the plight of the NBL and how unlucky Brian Goorjian was to lose his job after winning the championship.
I'm pretty sure Eddie said that he could go and coach Richmond BUT other people were talking so it was hard to be certain.
The man is a cretin!
-
Eddie now boasting he was right. SEN is too replaying promos with what Eddie said ::).
Get out of the beltway
Eddie McGuire | July 05, 2009
On the night that Richmond's hopes were smashed by Carlton I made the comment, based on being a reporter of the game for more than 30 years, that if the Tigers did not win another game within the month and were beaten by Melbourne then Terry Wallace was gone and there would be a big push to get Kevin Sheedy as coach.
Wilson is a passionate Richmond fan. In her flaying of my views, she said: "I should know better" that "no way would Sheedy coach again nor would he want to".
She even pulled out the hoary chestnut of conflict of interest - that by saying such a thing I was doing so to further Collingwood's ends and destabilise Richmond.
A little over three months later and guess what? The Tigers lost those games, Wallace is gone and during the week Sheedy, backed by club legends Kevin Bartlett, Francis Bourke and Tom Hafey, has declared he wants the Richmond coaching job.
It seems Caro has fallen for the Canberra three-card trick of going on her opinions rather than the facts, or confusing the two.
What the public are saying is it's time to go back to time-honoured practices of checking and reporting the facts. Leave the guessing to the bloggers.

Like everybody else on oneeyed-richmond,I'll enjoy watching this fat, opinionated pig choke on his own vomit again in September. That's when the AFL can no longer protect his mollycoddled side from the quality teams of the competition like they do in the home and away rounds, and the wobblers are exposed yet again as the pretenders that they are.
-
eddie was correct
and sheedy will coiach us
-
What a coincidence those pushing for Sheeds publicly and those claiming their predictions were right all work on SEN :whistle.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. The pies are my smokey this year. They can beat the Saints and have proven they can beat the Cats.
I know they have an easier draw than most but serious respect must be paid to Malthouse.
They have such a average list with only Didak and this year Davis being their only matchwinners yet still come up with the goods year in year out.
Yes they have no flag to show for it but who cares they make finals most years.
I dont think there is a football side in the AFL who plays more for their coach than those who play for Malthouse.
-
Daniel, your correct.
Will be an interesting game next friday night against the Bulldogs.
The pies are right in the mix.
-
The Bulldogs will spiflicate them.
