President Gary March calls for Richmond Tigers to step up
Jay Clark | April 12, 2009

RICHMOND president Gary March says the Tigers must improve their abysmal recent record against top-eight teams to have any hope of playing finals.

The Tigers boss said the club could not settle for wins against the bottom teams only ahead of a test of its finals credibility against Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

Richmond has been the whipping boy of quality opposition in recent seasons, winning only four of its past 36 assignments (including a draw) against top-eight teams.

That excludes the two losses to start this season against September-bound Carlton and Geelong, which have intensified the pressure.

But March said the only way Richmond could make that step up was by toppling teams above it.

"We always knew the importance of Round 1 because Carlton and Richmond were the two sides most people expected to challenge for a top-eight position," March said.

"But we didn't handle that and last week against Geelong we knew it would be tough because they are the benchmark of the competition but we had to be very, very competitive.

"The same with the Bulldogs this week, but at the end of the day, if we want to play finals we are going to have to start beating these teams in the top eight.

"You have to play them at some stage, and whether it is early in the season or later on, our focus is on beating those sides."

March said he saw improvement in the Tigers' 20-point loss to the Cats last weekend, although he took little solace.

The defeat has left the club 0-2, needing to bring a finals-like intensity to the Dogs clash tomorrow, with its poor record against top-eight teams coming firmly under question.

History will be against the Tigers making finals if they slump to a third-straight loss, as only five teams since 1994 have recovered from an 0-3 start to play finals.

None have made it from 0-4.

But March said the club would not panic in the event of a loss to the Bulldogs.

"History has shown over a number of years that teams who have made a poor start can still make the eight," he said.

"If you keep losing games, obviously it becomes a lot harder."

Vice-captain Nathan Foley denied there was extra pressure on the players to perform, despite the mounting pressure.

"It's an important game, but to say there's any extra significance - I don't think so," Foley said.

"It's just important to come in with the same attitude each week and play some good, solid football."

MARK Coughlan's return to senior football has been put back at least a week, with the Tigers leaving him out of the team to play the Western Bulldogs.

Richard Tambling has come in for Robin Nahas while the Bulldogs have an unchanged team.

This is where the club needs to keep its mouth shut or at least keep these comments internally. Why state the bleeding obvious publicly the day before a game which just adds to the pressure ???.

First players telling us how upset they are.
Now the pres stating the obvious.
This smacks of selling memberships and snake oil rather than than focusing on the real issue at hand. Tell us what we want to hear rather than doing the harder thing which is giving us what we want. Just because someone from the club says it does not mean it will happen. For me nothing but a win is acceptable tomorrow. For us tomorrow there is no such thing as a brave defeat a honorable draw or a catastrophic loss as our season needs a win and that's all to get it back on track.
Shut your mouths focus your minds prepare your bodies hone your senses go out and play footy and just f***** WIN!

Agree Tucky. It's cringeworthy when we come out and make these silly public comments and they also have a habit of being made just before we cop a flogging  :help.

Agree also MT.  This is not the time or place for the president to go public and wail in with his 2 bob's worth.  He might be a nice guy, he might be a good president, but he is not a shrewd operator - making a public comment every time the team doesn't measure up is not going to change the attitude or performance on the ground.

Yep March's media skills have left a lot to be desired at times over the past 12 months :-\. The only time when he has been spot on publicly is when he put Eddie and Barrett back in their box. It's not just March mind you. The Club as a whole has had a propensity for years to talk before it can walk. Zip it up Tigers and let the footy do the talking for a change starting tomorrow.

Completely agree - this is amateurish. You don't hear the presidents of Geelong, or even recent strugglers like Essendon or even Carlton come out with rubbish like this.

Unless we can clean out such amateurish behaviour off the field, what chance do we have on the field.

Disappointing.

You must be kidding
I hope you had a great look at the rubbish dished up today.
If you think we are heading in the right direction, you have NO IDEA.
Edwards, Tambling, Schultz , King should never ever wear yellow and black ever again.
As for the kicking sideways, backwards , kicking 10 metres in D50, its an absolute DISGRACE!

Because March doesn't know when to speak, and when not to speak, and to top it off, doesn't know what the appropriate thing to say is, in the given situation. He's a natural back room boy, not a front linesman.

Guess what I was there

And I thought we played crap. This loss is more devasting than the round 1 fiasco have I made clear  ...But based on today's effort you could add a couple more who shouldn't wear the jumper again but I let that slide because if you think that the names that you've mentioned are the only culprits then I'd counter you have NO IDEA

But just on your kicking sideways backwards thing .... when a team like the Bulldogs (who you rate so highly) do it like they did today is it an absolute DISGRACE too?

Now I don't want any of your usual avoidance to answering the question ... when other teams do it is it a DISGRACE?

My own personal opinion on this is that, making Campbell the coach will be just as big a mistake as we have made in the last 10 years of coaching appointments. Campbell will be the wrong choice if indeed that choice is made. The right choice is Sheedy or Hardwick.

Totally agree. Campbell for starters has not had the apprenticeship.
Secondly he was a very selfish player/person and again like the leech that he is he comes back to the club the year that Wallet is out of contract to again prove that at Richmond the individual is bigger than the club itself. It will be a calamity for he club is Campbell is giving the coaching job ahead of many other candidates who are out there and will do more for the club. Any one here remember our post season transcript of 1998 and Campbell publicly chastising the club wanting to leave and head to Melbourne only to stay and be appointed as club captain 2 years later. This will be awful. If Wallet goes which he will then anyone but Campbell. This appointment will be akin to making Ted Bundy the security guard of a sorority house full of brunettes with hair parted in the middle.

You can already see the Campbell influence around the club
Players playing for themselves and not the club
Good luck to him if he's appointed coach
He'll need it

I agree 100% Campbell should not be our next coach but he wasn't a selfish player.

He left the club shy of 300 because he thought he wasn't a good enough player to play 300 games.

Bulldogs can do it and they have the ability too.
Richmond cannot as they havent the abilty too.
the coach hasnt  identified that into 5 years of coaching , he has them playing a game plan they cannot perform
As you know, I was involved down there ,I was shaking my head 3 years ago and I am still am today watching from the outside .
REALLY, enough is enough.

If you want me to add more names , I will.
Unfortunately  , time is up for Joel.
probably needs to play inside F 50 if that.
Browny is a "'show pony"" who is struggling.
Daniel Jackosn aint up to it, either is Hislop.
Simmo struggling in his last year as he will retire at years end, knee is no good ;)
Angus I have seen enough , pass there, back to the burgers
I think that Richard Tambling is a disgrace by the way.  We bagged Fiora, Fiora would pull Richards pants down

yep and the most interesting stat i heard on the way home is our richi has collected 20 possy's or more in only 4 games of the 77 he has played for our club.

he makes JON and Fiora look like superstars.

a disgrace to be wearing the Yellow and Black.

We are royaly, totally farqued yet again. What an absolute shambles Richmond has been and is.
