RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace has backed his Tigers to go head to head with the lightning-quick Bulldogs and come away with a win on Monday.

While he admits facing the Dogs on the quick surface at the Docklands is no easy task, Wallace promised he would not be trying to strangle the contest.

"Obviously they're a very good side, a top-four side from last year, and in excellent form in the first two rounds. It's a difficult assignment, but we managed to grind out a draw with them last year, so we'll go into the game and take them on," Wallace said ahead of a light training session at Punt Road Oval on Sunday.

"We rate our own leg speed. It's an area that we really believe we're strong in ourselves, so from that aspect we're prepared to take them on."

Recent history backs up Wallace’s assertion with the two sides finishing with 130 points apiece after their dramatic round-five encounter last year.

The Bullies are highly-favoured going into the clash, but Wallace scoffed at the notion that the Tigers' season would be in dire trouble if the result didn't go their way.

"We're not looking at going 0-3, we're looking at going 1-2, but certainly if circumstances go that way I would think absolutely [you're still in it]," he said.

"I mean you're three weeks into a 22-round season, so it's still absolutely game on. We'll worry about that when it occurs or if it occurs."

The Tigers will be fresh after two substantial breaks separated their first three matches of the season, but Wallace admitted it would have been nice to get back on the park sooner after a spirited effort against Geelong last week.

"I thought we took some good strides last week against a very capable side," he said.

"We need to be showing the form that we showed in patches of that game over four quarters. That's really where it sits.

"If we play the type of footy we played in the third quarter we're going to be competitive against any side in the competition. You can't do it for a 40-minute or 50-minute scenario – you've got to do it over a four-quarter period."

Tigers to 'take on' Dogs
Andrea Petrie | April 12, 2009

ONE incident that Richmond is likely to use as motivation when it takes on the Western Bulldogs at Docklands today is the controversial circumstances surrounding the draw when the two teams last met.

It was round five last season and the Bulldogs had remained undefeated and the Tigers had two wins and two losses to their name.

The Dogs dominated the first half but made silly mistakes in front of goal, which put them in front by only eight points at the main break.

Richmond managed six goals to the Dogs' three in the third term and was 25 points up 10 minutes into the last quarter.

With three minutes 30 seconds left of the match, the Tigers were still 19 points up and looking like they had nailed it.

But then Jake King was unhappy with his options when kicking out, so in a move no longer allowed in the game, stepped backwards over the goal line, reducing the margin to three straight goals.

Following a turnover after another kick-in, Daniel Cross slotted another goal for the Dogs, shaving the Tigers' lead to 12 points.

Robert Murphy then got through Richmond's defence and kicked one through the vacant goal square with two minutes left on the clock.

Then Adam Cooney kicked it high to where Brian Lake and several others gathered 40 metres from the Bulldogs goal — and Lake marked.

There was less than a minute left in the game.

After Lake had crashed to the ground with the ball in his hands, a hamstring spasm in his right leg prevented him from taking the kick.

He went straight to the boundary and the umpire allowed teammate Will Minson to take the shot at goal. He converted with 14 seconds left on the clock.

The resulting draw was described by Tigers coach Terry Wallace after the game as "a massive sting", with Lake being accused of faking the injury so he didn't have to take the kick.

But while the controversial end is now history, Wallace said Richmond was determined to beat the in-form Bulldogs today at their own fast-paced game.

"We rate our own leg speed — it's an area that we really believe we're strong ourselves," Wallace said yesterday.

"So from that aspect we're prepared to take them on. It was 130 points each (when the two sides last met) last year, so it wasn't really a game of defences or trying to clog or block each other up."

He said the Tigers were "comfortable to play them head to head".

Wallace said the Bulldogs had been impressive over the first two rounds, but Richmond could win if it maintained the form it showed at stages against Geelong last weekend for an entire match.

"We took some good strides last week against a very capable side," he said.

"We need to be showing the form that we showed in patches of that game over four quarters.

"That's really where it sits — if we play the type of footy we played in the third quarter we're going to be competitive against any side in the competition.

"But you can't do it for a 40-minute or 50-minute scenario, you've got to do it over a four-quarter period and that's what we've got to try to achieve this weekend," the Tigers coach said.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

What they said:
"Top teams are going to be disappointed with a game they should have won and should have iced close to half-time." — coach Rodney Eade after the two teams drew the last time they met.

What it means: The Bulldogs remained unbeaten and were the dominant team of the first half but wasted opportunities in front of goal. Richmond, too, made silly mistakes throughout the game that cost it dearly when the match ended in controversial circumstances. The Bulldogs are yet to lose a game this season and are looking strong.

Look out for: stuff Brian Lake took an impressive 18 marks in the Dogs' win against North Melbourne last weekend, with 25 possessions overall. When the Dogs and Tigers met last year, Lake took a mark 40 metres out from the Bulldogs' goal with less than a minute left in the game but said a hamstring spasm prevented him from being able to take the kick. Teammate Will Minson took the kick and levelled the scores with 14 seconds left on the clock, resulting in a draw.

RICHMOND

What they said:
"For a side that people thought was a car wreck and we had no players who had shown any improvement at all a fortnight ago, we have played pretty good footy in the last fortnight." — coach Terry Wallace after the pair last met.

What it means:
Richmond was criticised for losing its first two games of the 2008 season but thrashed Fremantle the week before it took on the Dogs. Despite almost getting over the line against Geelong last week, the Tigers are yet to win a game this season but would have gained some confidence from that effort.

Look out for:
Richmond's Brett Deledio walked away from last weekend's game with 30 possessions, followed by Nathan Brown with 29 disposals and Matthew Richardson with 28. All three need to be at their best to overcome the Dogs.

Last time:
Round 5, 2008: Western Bulldogs 19.16 (130) drew with Richmond 20.10 (130) at Telstra Dome.

Wallet has no idea, was discussing yesterday the idiotic statements he HAS made in his time, like the Richmond list was better than the Hawks when he took the job over. Well well well. If it was then, it sure isnt now, and if it wasnt then, he has done nothing to improve it.
Am just about to leave to go to the game, thinking that we might have a chance, but when reality sets in about 4.42pm on this beautiful day, it will be just another dream, or it maybe a step to get rid of the used care salesman and hit short kick backwards style of football.

Just got home, I hope you all watched either live or on TV.
Tambling/Schultz/King should never ever wear yellow and black again.
Terry, shut the door on the way out.
As a coach, you are a disgrace.
