Terry Wallace time bomb after another Richmond loss
Mark Stevens | April 20, 2009

THE future of besieged Richmond coach Terry Wallace will be on top of the agenda when the club's board meets tomorrow night.

Although it is a scheduled monthly meeting, the review of the season will have significantly more sting following yesterday's disastrous eight-point loss to Melbourne.

Tigers head of football Craig Cameron last night stopped short of categorically stating Wallace would lead the club into Saturday's clash against North Melbourne.

"I'm pretty confident Terry will coach next week, yes," was as far as Cameron went in the rooms after the loss.

Cameron met the club's football director Tony Free before fronting the press, but denied that was a sign of crisis.

"He (Free) is the director who looks after the football area . . . normal process after the game," Cameron said.

Cameron and Free met briefly in the absence of Tigers president Gary March, who was on the Gold Coast attending a wedding on a massive day for the club.

March, who had made a commitment to a long-term business associate, did not return calls last night.

Wallace said he would be speaking to both Cameron and March in the wash-up.

He said the president had been "absolutely" supportive throughout Richmond's nightmare start.

"Marchy's been terrific. Obviously he's questioned how we've been playing and where we're going, which is exactly the president's right," Wallace said.

"Myself and, I think, Craig Cameron and Marchy will have a catch-up over the next 24 hours and a debrief."

Richmond now has a 0-4 record and needs a minor miracle to make the finals.

Wallace said before the season started he needed to make the finals to get an extension to his five-year contract.

But he is no mood to walk away, declaring the team can get back on track if it regains some grunt and starts winning more contested ball.

Asked if there was any circumstance this year where he would walk away from Punt Rd, Wallace replied: "I don't want to answer that publicly."

He then added he would not walk away from the fight because he would not expect his players to do so.

Richmond captain Chris Newman said the loss was "gut-wrenching".

"We really wanted to come out here, give a four-quarter effort and get a result for him (Wallace)," Newman said.

"I'm behind him and he doesn't deserve that."

It is unusual for the low-key Cameron to talk after a game, but he fronted the media pack after a brief chat with Free, who remained well away from the action as Wallace took his players through a lengthy post-match review.

Cameron said the loss was a "tough one", but said the future of Wallace would not be discussed publicly.

"We had a plan at the start of the year in terms of the review of the position and we're not going to speculate on it publicly," Cameron said.

Cameron said it was not fair on Wallace and his family for the club to speak publicly about the coach's future.

After the Round 1 loss to Carlton, March said the Tigers should be judged on the next month. They have lost all three since and will now go in as major underdogs against North Melbourne on Saturday night.

Cameron said the club's goal of making finals had not changed because it was still "numerically" possible.

But Cameron also said: "At some stage, we'll have to look at where the season's headed."

Asked if the team was still playing for Wallace, Cameron said: "I think second half today showed players still play for him.

"If they didn't have confidence in him, the game could have completely slipped away. I think Terry can coach."

Wallace took heart from the players' reaction to a halftime spray in which he described their performance as "diabolical".

He said the game was lost in the second term when the inexperienced Demons slammed home eight goals to Richmond's three.

It's possible if we play Freo for the next 18 weeks straight..... just checked my draw... nup we don't!!

We didn't show up for the first game of the season in front of 87,000.

We somehow kicked 8 goals in a quarter against the Cats, and when Bowden kicked the first of the last quarter, he had a look on his face that said 'we've done enough boys, we've kept it to an honorable loss'.

We lead at quarter time and keep the Dogs goalless, then in the second quarter we come out and play like we're down by 20 goals.

Then in a game that should be our first win, we let the Demons kick 8 in a quarter and need a half-time spray to inspire us to an 8 point loss.  ::)

Your not wrong there, we are the fools who continually pay up and show up every year for what.

to get dished up that crap that we have witnessed all year.

i really believe if it was any other club apart from the big 4, i seriously doubt that club would exist after the 27 years of disgraceful football we have endured.

thats correct its the harderned supporters who keep buying memberships that keep the club alive
l know many who have been softened by these disgraceful onfield & offield performances but l know some who wont budge & continue to beleive something will change
l beleive of Wallace stays that the assistant coaches must go in a complete cleanout

whats even more funnier is that the club ""conned "" supporters to pay at extra $75.00 for a grand final ticket ::)

Also heard on the news tonight that Denis Pagan has stuck his hand up to take the coaching role over if Wallace is sacked or walks
his hard up but my preference would be Gary Ayres next year as his good with young players

Actually saw that too on CH7

Pagan said he wasn't applying, nor did he want to dance on someones grave but he still wants to coach

Then they had KB on saying we shouldn't sack the coach mid season...

4th story on the Ch7 this evening  ::)

They should tell Wallace he wont be coaching in 2010 and that he should do the right thing and play the kids. Hardwick needs to be given as long as possible to figure out who he is bringing with him assistants wise and recruiting wise. He needs time to develop the list strategy going forward and what will be required from the likes of Craig Cameron. Hardwicks odds are shortening all the time I believe for the gig and the supporters are moving towards a Hardwick led revolution.

your not making sence Moi
Paul Hudson is a premiership coach in Country football & TAC U18's his a proven coach with young talent.
Has also learnt under Matthews & is in a current role at AFL now so l think he has enough to be a good coach.
Tony Free is a leech who sucks the club in years ago & then turned his back on the club & he always will be a sliml ittle leech has given nothing to the club
His role is to get rid of the stale coaches like Wallace & then you might find he will get his own

I was talking about their playing days, Monk.
If you were ever around in the '90s and watched Free play on Hudson, you will find he gave him hell.
Your assessment of him I wouldn't know. He was always polite whenever I spoke to him.  But I'm just a supporter so I wouldn't really know him on a personal level.
Paul Hudson's ability as a coach I wouldn't have a clue.  I wasn't actually referring to that.  So if you don't understand what I was talking about, I can't help you any more

Sorry Moi l didnot catch on
Tony Free spent that much time on the pine with bad knees he was hardly on the ground, he was a wasted space that Richmond never learnt from
Yes l know Paul personally as l had alot to do with him as a player & in a coaching role & still chat on phone
l have personally seen what he has done in coaching & had a input into players like Thomas & Pendlebury & a few others who have made solid spots in AFL sides
l also know Royal & played on him before AFL & have lost respect for him

Got this in an email today from my manager...

Quote from: waynes manager
I saw Tony Saturday night he is the "board man" at the tigers , usually sits behind Wallace and holds the board on field during breaks, you see him on  TV all the time.

I asked Tony how things are and there is no doubt they are all under the pump.He was diplomatic though after drilling more and tellling to take his "PR " hat off he did say that things need to change…you make what you want from that.

It doesn't say anything startling, but I wonder where he reckons 'change' needs to be made??

If we keep him till r11 then the payout will be lessened substantially - theres a financial to this as well, as well as the fact that we need to keep losing in order to salvage some picks come years end. Scully or Butcher or Fitzpatrick - would be something to hang your hat on atleast Marketing wise.

Who or what are insiders exactly ??? How many are there?

That's a valid question I would have thought

Are they supporters (read coterie members), staff, board members, the groundsman perhaps  ???... who are they and and why are they so faceless, rather than knifing from the shadows come out and face world....

Apparantly the insiders are the playing group! They run out each week at half time and a play a game and then run off before the start of the 3rd quarter!

Hopefully some of them resign tonight.

Wallace was unaccountable for 4 years, and up until last season, so was Greg Miller.

Too little too late. Too bad none of our board members in true Richmond fashion have any honor amongst them.

They are as accountable for this mess as Wallace is.
