Just looking ahead to Sunday - Kane Cornes and Salopek are out for Port.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/76608/default.aspx
-
Port are very inconsistant and I think that their current ladder position of 4th flatters them greatly.
-
we can win ... :pray
-
they will thump us and it will be curtains for terry
-
I just saw them on Fox Sports at training and doing karate on each other! :cuddles
-
The way we are going Meyers and Rodan will probably play and give us a caning
Sorry not in my positive state of mind ATM
-
Our season is starting to resemble that of Pagan's last year.
with a former club great to take over (campo) as soon as we get our next flogging
-
If we can go over there with a positive state of mind, some direct play and no turnovers we can win. Campbell cannot be the next Coach Daniel or this club is doomed, Hardwick or Bond would have to be selected before him or even Buckly if the Pies don't get him first. Maybe even Longmire as apparently he has only just missed out on a few other coaching gigs.
-
I do believe that Port are pretenders at the moment....If we can play for four quarters we can win.Expectatons are low again and all the pressure will be on the Power to win.I predict another honorable loss.
What a mess Terry is in....Lose this game and the mockery continues.Win this game and he will be labled selfish(by some ferals)for not tanking. He really is in a "No Win" situation.

Port Adelaide hatch plan to deal with Ben Cousins
Zac Milbank | May 14, 2009
BEN Cousins has already registered on Port Adelaide's radar.
Richmond's star midfielder - coming off an encouraging return against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday - can expect plenty of attention at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.
And Power enforcer Dean Brogan is eager to again make his presence felt from the opening bounce.
"Absolutely," the Port ruckman said when asked if he had noticed Cousins' return from a hamstring strain against the Lions.
"Cousins is back and we all know how good he looks, he's very fit. He played really well considering he missed a big chunk of footy.
"He'd be coming over here wanting to play well. He hasn't played here for a while so no doubt he's definitely on our radar. We can't let him get under our guard as he's a champion player."
Cousins has not graced AAMI Stadium since injuring his hamstring in West Coast's 2007 qualifying final loss against Port.
No doubt Brogan - keen to atone for being beaten by North Melbourne's Hamish McIntosh on Saturday night - will be reminding the former Eagles captain of this upon his return.
The aggressive ruckman is so focused on winning the first clearance for Port - it initially trailed 9-1 in this area against the Roos - that Cousins, Nathan Foley and Brett Deledio had better be wary.
"That's my game," Brogan said.
"I like to set the tone and my teammates like it when I do that so it's important for me to bring it every week.
"I can't afford to have an off day. It's just the responsibility I want and hopefully this week I can come out and play well."
While shutting down Cousins was a priority, Brogan said monitoring Foley and Deledio was just as important.
And he is ready to negate impressive Tigers ruckman Angus Graham, who is coming off a career-best game against Brisbane.
"It's not just him (Cousins)," Brogan said.
"Foley's playing well, Deledio's playing well and their young ruckman Graham - who I've got a big challenge against - he was best on ground last week so he's popped up from nowhere.
"We'll be going at the ball because contested footy is going to get us the win this week."
A member of Port's leadership group, Brogan declared all his teammates had to be "on edge" to succeed this season.
With a 4-3 win-loss record, the Power has given its fans a roller-coaster ride - failing to back up stunning wins against Hawthorn and Adelaide.
As a result, Brogan revealed his recipe for redemption at Alberton.
"You just hold people accountable for their actions," he said.
"We had lots of turnovers from senior players and younger players last week and that's just not good enough.
"We prepared well for North Melbourne, we knew they were going to throw everything at us and we didn't handle that too well.
"Every week, every team needs to be on edge, especially us.
"It's about concentrating for four quarters. We're not a Geelong or St Kilda who can get away with little 10-minute lapses. We're a team that needs to be on edge.
"Every kick counts, every mark and every play counts and that's what we're trying to get across to the group."

According to Jon Ralph tonight, Plough has said this week's team is the best side his put out on the park for the year. He's hoping for a win before he faces the board. In any case the media are expecting the Board to tell Plough he can stay on until the end of his contract but to play the kids so the club can plan for 2010.

Port talks up Tiger power
May 17, 2009
PORT Adelaide has run away from the notion of being favourite ahead of today's meeting with Richmond, in what amounts to its latest effort to shrug off crippling inconsistency.
Ruckman Dean Brogan and coach Mark Williams went to great lengths to talk up the merits of the Tigers, who, with one win from seven games, are alongside Melbourne at the bottom of the ladder.
At the start of round eight, Port was fourth, but only one win removed from 13th.
Williams' future may be shrouded in some doubt, but his counterpart, Terry Wallace, is as good as gone, according to many close to Tigerland.
That did not stop the Power from trying to build up its opponent into the sort of challenger it has handled well this year, beating Hawthorn and Adelaide when not favoured to do so. History helped Williams on this front, given that Port's four-point loss to Richmond in mid-2008 was the result that caused him to unceremoniously end the Power's season by declaring an early close to its finals aspirations.
"The only thing we take out of (last year's game) is they are capable of beating us if we don't play as well as we can and that's all we are taking out of it," Williams said.
Brogan's words seemed as much about revving himself up for the game as they were a reflection of the Tigers' not inconsiderable returns in numerous statistical categories such as clearances, an area where Port have been inconsistent.
Williams said it was up to each player to decide how best to prepare their minds.
"People will pick and choose what they read in the papers, hear in the media or take from the coaches — whatever gets them up to play, whatever turns them on, great," he said. "If they want to be underdogs, so be it."
Kane Cornes' remarkable recovery means Port has made only one change from the team that lost to North Melbourne, with youngster Hamish Hartlett replacing Steve Salopek (dislocated shoulder). Richmond has made five useful inclusions, including those of rising star Trent Cotchin and veteran left-footer Nathan Brown.

No late changes.
A wet Footy Park so being small up forward may end up being a good thing.

Saved by the bell.
Quarter time
Richmond 4.1-25
Port 5.3-33
Goals: Nahas 3, Simmo
-
Where's our other forwards? Only Nahas looks dangerous.
You can tell Cotch hasn't played since last year. Rusty.
Getting killed in the midfield and it's a training run for Tredrea when he's on the ground. Just too much space.
-
Possies:
Jacko 8

Geez we can't buy a free :-\

Nahas is the only player looking lively up forward. Just have to get Hughes/Patto and Riewoldt into the side, just no spine or structure down there.

Realy bad turnover Newy........ quick blame Terry.

Half-time
Richmond 4.1 5.2-32
Port 5.3 7.8-50
Goals: Nahas 3, Simmo, Browny
-
We have had the ball all stuffing qtr, I mean tghe whole qtr and with 12 seconds to go they kick a goal... amazing. Can anyone please explain to me how that is the coach's fault? It is the decisions bsing made by the players on the ground...... NOT stuffing TERRY!!!!!!!!!!
-
Close enough if good enough...we just need a few "cheap " goals.
Nahas is the best thing to happen to Richmond this year.
Agree WAT...Its not Terrys fault that Newman handballs to Tredrea.
Home team umpiring on display
-
Yep umps have been terrible.
There's no forward line structure. You need to play multiple talls to give players something to kick to. We're being forced to work the ball up into our forward line but we don't have the brains, skills, confidence and protection of the ball carrier (no shepherding) to pull it off. Nahas is our only forward who looks like kicking a goal but he can't outmark opponents in contests.
Port are just cleaner with the ball too. They really should be 5-6 goals in front.
-
Possies:
Cogs 18
Tuck 18
Jacko 15
Petts 13
Cuz 11
White 11
Total: 188 - 173. Once again handballing more than we kick :scream.

Simmo was held = no free :banghead
-
VERY VERY VERY VERY soft Polo, very stuffing SOFT.
-
Goal Treadrea and the fat lady belts out the same Tiger tune. Petts has done well so far.
-
Our kick-ins are terrible. We can't clear it outside of defence. Another Port goal. This is going to get very ugly.
32 - 63
-
Nahas short to Blingers short to Foley. 47m out. Goal!
38 - 63
-
Sheesh we actually got a free.
Point to Morton.
39 - 63
-
I know I'm not saying anything knew but geez our skills and decision making are terrible :P. Another forward foray stuffed up.
-
Is anyone seriously on this site going to tell me it's Terry's fault for the poo disposal I am watching......... great goal Tambling!!!
-
Blingers gets a goal :gotigers. Lucky he didn't miss as Nahas was open in the goalsquare.
45 - 63
-
Is anyone seriously on this site going to tell me it's Terry's fault for the poo disposal I am watching......... great goal Tambling!!!
A combo of both to be honest. Some people are going to be disappointed when the new coach doesn't provide a instant improvement in skills.
Petts goals :gotigers
51 - 63
-
Fat lady has decided not to finish her song just yet. :shh...... Petts is doing well.

Tackles; 56 - 50

Another 7 goals in the last quarter please

Port dropped away once they got 5 goals up but we didn't then we lifted the intensity and smashed them in the midfield. Browny, Cuz, Foley, Blingers, Tucky all got on top and it gave us an open forward line..
-
Cuz high and it's a point.
78 - 73

Port 5.3 7.8 10.13 14.18-102

-
Just gutted...absolutely gutted.I want to cry.
-
I just don't believe it, Morton kicks out on the full they run it down Treadrea goal and all over. Shattering.
Even if Mitch passed it backwards to maintain possession we would've won. He just couldn't afford to give Port back possession.
I know they missed a lot of set shots including one from the goalsquare but we had chances in that last 40 minutes too. Who says goalkicking isn't important.
16 points up with 10 mins to go then 9 points up with 3 mins to go and still lose. Choked!
-
Time to retire Bowden you hack
Harsh. He had to go back onto Tredrea because Moore and Lukey couldn't do the job. Tredrea had 4 in the first 15 minutes yet kicked 3 for the rest of the game while on Joel.
-
Great effort but not good enough. Bad mistakes at CRITICAL TIMES. I am gutted too but that is the enigma that is our footy club. Just when they give us some hope they then ensure we shi=ould never put any faith in them in the first place.
Morton out on the full.
Raines turnovers
We know Wallace won't coach next year so I won't talk about this but as a start lets look at the playing personnel going forward.
If Kane Johnson aint playing again this year retire him and put him in a Toyota Hilux at the W Bulldogs home game on June 5.
Bowden announce your retirement have one last hurrah against the Bombers next week and then take your gutless and selfish possession type of game to whoever wants you.
A couple of poor efforts late on resulting in a Tredrea goal as he stayed off waiting for crumbs whilst Tredrea was up.
As the season progresses we can finalise with Brown Simmonds and possibly Richo.
Cousins is a star and MUST be kept.
-
1) The players had a fair dinkum crack at it today and they should be proud of the effort, they worked hard, the result didnt go our way but that happens sometimes.
2) Cousins is still a top player and above about 85% of our current squad.
3) Nahas is a good player- who knows how to play his position.
4) Cotchin needs games
5) Tambling kicked a rip snorter, havent seen a goal like that from him for a fair while. Played ok the last few weeks.
6) Our skill level across the board is poor.
7) Bowden was no where in the last serious contest where Tredrea kicked the winning goal.
8) Whilst I believe in the tank, we didnt deserve to lose today, the players were fair dinkum and they deserved a better result for the work they put in.
-
I am absolutely gutted but more importantly appalled at our lack of belief. We were all over them in the lastqtr and a half and once we got to 16 points up shut down the game. Absoultely crazy. Fair dinkum, I dont want to harp on this but if Andrew Raines does not get dropped for that performance this club is a joke. He is the worst footballer in the AFL but somehow gets automatic selection. Cant kick and has no awareness.
No the season is officially over this is whatI would like to see next week in team selection.
Out: Raines (for good), Bowden, Pettifer, Simmonds
In: Vickery, Reiwoldt, Connors, Edwards.
Some will say Pettifer played well but again his time is over for this season. Not going to play in our next premiership side so move on.
-
Time to retire Bowden you hack
Harsh. He had to go back onto Tredrea because Moore and Lukey couldn't do the job. Tredrea had 4 in the first 15 minutes yet kicked 3 for the rest of the game while on Joel.
Come on MT when he was getting scalps in 05 and 06 like Brown Lloyd Fevola and co he was a star with blokes like Ray Hall A Kellaway around him. Lukey did a great job on Motlop. What take Luke off a player he was beating. If Moore is injured then don't play him.J Bowden MUST retire he is useless and selfish. Article Crawf wrote in the paper today although hypocritical by him is essentially an apt assessment of Bowden. To use others as an excuse for Bowden is a cop out especially when others are doing their job.
Weak
Selfish
Passive
Fraudulent
Misappropriated
AND EXTREMELY LUCKY to be at the right place at the right time in rd 16 and 17 last season and the last 13 years of his career.
If ppl want to talk about all Oz with him great that was ages ago. He aint in that form now and he is 31. Time to go and time to retire.
-
Motlop goal :banghead
Knew this guy would get one.
Had done everything he could today to look disinterested and avoid the contest and by the law of averages a sitter drops in his lap :banghead
-
Time to retire Bowden you hack
Bad coaching, shouldn't have been on Tredrea
-
Bowden was soundly beaten today.
Rule 1 in wet conditions play in front. Bowden hardly played in front. That first quarter was criminal. Pack mark Tredrea took for the winning goal showed how far away Bowden was from his man waiting for a spillage to fraudulently tell all of us how cool and collected he is with his precise disposal. Too much of this passive selfish self gratuitous footy from this footballer. Blah balah blah blah with him. Most controversial player on our list even more so than Cuz. Cuz is a star Bowden is a fraud. Retire him and do it as soon as next week.
-
Im coming closer to the belief that the only senior player we should keep next year is Ben Cousins.
-

Agree, and into the leadership group.

Agree should have been playing for Coburg yesterday.
-
8) Whilst I believe in the tank, we didnt deserve to lose today, the players were fair dinkum and they deserved a better result for the work they put in.
The new coach will have something good to work with if he can get the best from everyone.
We have a great contested ball division.
The new coach may finally get Deledio to elite level and get Foley back to his 07 form.
A promising young forward line. We just need a Butcher ;D
The defence is ok as well.
-
Im coming closer to the belief that the only senior player we should keep next year is Ben Cousins.
Agree, and into the leadership group.
leadership question is important. Newman is nowhere near Cousins when it comes to leadership IMHO. Do you move to change the leadership and start the process of moving to the next generation. If cousins stays fit for the rest of the season, does the club decide to make
Ben Cousins - Captain and have
Brett Deledio, Trent Cotchin and Richard Tambling as Vice Captains?
This way, we buy more time for Deledio and Cotchin in particular.
-
Im coming closer to the belief that the only senior player we should keep next year is Ben Cousins.
Agree, and into the leadership group.
Nah boys we can't give this former Brownlow Medallist Premiership player and a bloke with skeletons in the closet and breaker of the law running from a booze bus a shot in our leadership group.
We need Joel in the leadership goup "Bravely facing the music" telling us about his charitable self and coming out as he did after round 1 before we went to Geelong and every other time he opens his mouth to say how disappointed all at the club are and how upset the fans are and how awful it is to be where we are at. Come on Joel keep Lloyd to 5 goals and take a mark to repel an Essendon attack at the 27 minute mark of the last quarter and tell us what a hero you are. Blah blah blah you fraudulent and gutless individual. Hopefully he comes out and speaks to the media this week and says "I am retiring effective as the final siren against Essendon this Saturday"
I am only giving him a farewell game just for the sake of giving him one.
-
The new coach, the new coach, the new coach, for stuffs sake who are we going blame next year when we continually turn the ball over........ the new coach?????????

i dont think we lost today because of missed targets i think we lost it because of because we didn't want it hard enough.
Some tackles late in the game were easily broken which led to that last 3 goals of Port.
Left to only a few players to do all the work as per usual
Brown and Simmo non existent in the last 10 minutes so i hope i never see those 2 fools ever again.
Foley ditto. When are we going to drop this guy????
-
Back in 2007...Gasper was going well enough to play all season but the decision was made to look to the future.Ditto Andy Kellaway at the end of 2006.
Now the time has come for Joel to follow the same fate.If that costs us a few games in the short term so be it.He is just Wall Paper covering the cracks.
As some of you have said the "Dream time" game is a perfect opportunity to retire a 13 year servant of the club.
Time for a NEW Richmond.....
-
We shouldnt drop foley, we should talk him up ... and put him up for trade at years end.

now thats a very intelligent post.
What makes Bowden, Simmo or Brown any different than Gas or Kellaway
I dont know about you but i would rather see Vickery, Post and Thursfield instead of these 3 has beens any day of the week

Come on Joel keep Lloyd to 5 goals and take a mark to repel an Essendon attack at the 27 minute mark of the last quarter and tell us what a hero you are. Blah blah blah you fraudulent and gutless individual.
You seem to have a dislike of Bowden that is almost beyond reason and rationality. Seeing you've raised the issue of guts, out of the two of you I know who the gutless one is. One gives his all, over many years. The other hides behind his keyboard and snipes. Not very heroic, either.

about leaders
cousins should be made captain tonight
jackson tuck and cogs are showing they will be grunt machines in the midfield
cousins brown and cotchin will have the polish
foley is crap
deledio is lazy
tambling is coming along great and is showing up lids atm, esp when it comes to effort and using ur pace
once again. jackson showed king size balls today, he is our only real physical man out there
cant believe ppl are bagging brown, he was damn good today
it is time to drop foley and deledio
foley bc half his disposal are crap, deledio because he has no real blue collar work ethic
all u deledio lovers bag me as much as u want , but he does not like to gut run no "go" when its his turn. he may do it here and theire sparingly to bluff you all but he needs learn from cousins, tambling definately is, so jackson and to some extent white, but dildo is fricken lazy

You are right I hide behind a computer and give an opinion not so heroic.
What was I thinking?
Bowden is a legend of this football club who should be allowed to play on for as long as he wants. He should hold a spot in this side at 31 ahead of any young KPP we may have running around for Coburg . Also when he speaks to the media he does so with the most sincerity honesty and clarity and has the interests of the RFC to heart. The way he plays the game and accumulates possessions is so heroic and passionate its a wonder why we have not recruited 22 of him. Bowden is no more of a 1 trick pony than Raines is.
In 2004 2005 2006 in an era of flooding and plentiful possession of the ball to beat the flood and slow and boring play Joel excelled. 2007-08-09 the game has evolved again where the flood is useless and playing on at all costs is the go. Look at Geelong for a quarter and you'll know why. Unfortunantely Joel is horribly exposed there and his courage and strength in playing close to a forward and punching from behind is extremely deficient. That Tredrea mark where Warren kicked the winner Joel was nowhere near the contest and was memrely a few mwtres behind waiting for a spillage. Poor poor poor. The game is passed him by and he should be retired.
Now if people are going to get offended because Joel is the son of a former Richmond Premiership Player so be it.Sitting In the RFC members I can give you alot of examples where Joel's courage intencity and application have been questioned. Now if stating my opinion wrightly or wrongly in opinion is seen as less than heroic b/c I am making it behind a keyboard well live with it. I must say I envy your courage GB for raising this with me for my baffling unrealistic and unprovoked attack on Joel. Must make your Sunday Roast taste even better.

Some will say Pettifer played well but again his time is over for this season. Not going to play in our next premiership side so move on.
[/quote]
"Crawford was not going to play in Hawthorns next premiership so move on" We need "some" experience to get us there so we have to have a balanced list.

Hey Rx... WTF... ??? ??? ???

I reckon footy is like horse racing! If you make your run too terly then you run the risk of being swamped at the end! We bolted too early and got beat by a class opponent. No shame there when it happens at their home ground.Like the rest of the crew on here, i am bitterly dissappointed but hey, the signs are becoming more positive :thumbsup

cant bag joel today, he is a champion and did a job on tredrea that no one could. he would have kicked 12 today if is wasnt for joel
pettifer is not as bad as many think btw
and how about rodan ....he was laughable and very poo

We need Joel in the leadership goup. .......telling us about his charitable self......
You don't like Joel as a player but why do you use his charitable work against him in your personal attacks on him?
What has it got to do with how he plays football and how is it a bad thing?
As for him telling us about it, when? Everything I've ever read or heard about what he does has been from someone other than him. When he is asked it's obvious he doesn't want to tell about it.

Why dont we all relax, the Tigers had a real go today.
Can't unserstand we always beat up on our own, if players are not up to scratch they will be sent back to the twos and if they don't fit in the future plans they will be out the door at the end of the year.
No matter how much you slag them it achieves nothing as they often turn it around. Example please put up your hand if you wanted Richard Tambling shown the door a few weeks!

me
he has not turned it around IMO. he is performing at the level i expect week in week out but if you think he has set the world on fire then your kidding yourself.
That being said he has come a long way and to be fair id say he is having a better season that Lids. Im starting to think he along with Foley dont do enough. Foley's tackle in the last saved a goal but THATS WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN WEEK IN WEEK OUT

Firstly my Sunday roast was great!
Secondly i too think you are being way to critical on Joel, sometimes you just have to show a little more respect for our champs. Maybe his best has past him but he is still a very important part of our side. Tell me this, why is he still playing on oppositions best forwards, and why is he playing in the backline at all?
Maybe i dreamed this but didn't Terry say Joel's backline days were over?
And today when one of our young, strong, athletic backmen should have stepped up to play on Tredrea it was left to Joel??? Why???
Anyway at least we had a go today, much more enjoyable to watch, even if we didn't get the chocolates.
Maybe our chocolates will come in November! I'm hoping!

Bit of a coincidence that Bowden got on top of Tredrea the same time the Richmond midfield started dominating ports in clearances and contested possesions.
Every time the ball was sent to Tredrea in position, Bowden was soft in the contest and Tredrea kicked the goal.
Just as Port's midfield got back on top at the end of the 4th, Tredrea came right back into the picture.
It's not rocket science.

Well, I was wrong when I said pre-game that the score could really blow out to ugly proportions with the undersized backline we had. Maybe the wet conditions helped us in this regard. But we did battle on bravely and should have won with cleverer decision-making in those last frantic minutes (hello Mitch).
But my worst fears that Tredrea would be the difference between winning and losing were realized. Thursfield should have been in and double-teamed him with McGuane. End of story.

How Thursfield is not in this team but you have clowns like Raines running around is beyond me.
That was the difference today

Nahas had his breakout game today. Was fantastic as a crumbing forward but even more importantly, applied a huge amount of pressure on Ports backmen. His tackling and run downs were inspirational.
Bling, Cousins and McGuane were excellent in there roles and Cotchin again showed glimpses of brilliance.
Bowden and Pettifer are liabilities and should be removed from the team for Thursfield/Rance(when fit) and Riewoldt. Simmonds and Brown should make way for Patto/Browne/Vickery and Hughes. Brown, like Bowden, has great finishing skills but just lacks the pace now to compete and keep their spots.
I would be happy now if we played all our 2009 games with the same passion and same result....the draft is where our success should be measured this year IMHO.

Credit to our midfield especially with Brogan and Lade dominating the hitouts. Having Cuz, Cogs, Cotch, Lids, Foley, Tucky, Blingers, Jacko, .... that's 8 just there to rotate through the middle. All of our better players were our mids except for Nahas. It was our bookends that let us down today. We just didn't have a tall spine and structure to make the most of chances and defensively stop Tredrea. Both teams had 54 inside 50s yet they had 32 scoring shots to our 24. We also played underdone players so we were dead on our feet in the last 10 minutes of the game. We had kept them to just 1 goal for over a quarter and then coughed up 4 goals in those last 10 mins :scream.

Well said, funny how a few points makes such a difference. If we had won by a few points it would all be good.
I was just happy the boys had a crack and played tough contested footy.
While I dont believe in the tank I would be happy for us to lose games but give good value on the field. Then in 2010 we can talk ourselves up with a new coach and see what happens then.

I agree with you regarding Raines - to say "extremely disappointing" is being nice about it
But regarding Thursfield - have you watched him running around for Coburg lately?
Actually better still watch round 1 again (if you're game) and you will see why he was dropped in the first place, then stroll down and watch Coburg and you'll see why he is still there.
Actually just re-watch the game that was on the ABC against Casey a few weeks ago and see young Jack Watts against him, tunring him inside out and you will get my drift (hopefully)... ::)
Sadly based on Will's form at the moment he would not have made much of a difference against Tredrea

Just a couple of other observations:
Brown - I thought he was good - his work in the 3rd helped get us back in the game
Cousins - just offer him 2 years please! It was vintage Cousins in the back pocket in the 3rd
Cotchin - just class all class
Newman - we have the momentum and are running the lines and we get..... a handball to no-one.... says it all really
Nahas - another rookie gem - we've been very good in the rookie stakes I reckon. He certainly wont be on the rookie list in 2010 - senior listing beckons IMHO

Question:
Can you actually be gutted and heartbroken but still proud after loss like that ???
