Cotchin heads six inclusions
By Mic Cullen 5:00 PM Thu 14 May, 2009
YOUNG gun Trent Cotchin leads a list of six inclusions for Richmond this weekend as the Tigers prepare to face Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.
Cotchin has been in good form in the VFL and is set to make his first appearance for the senior team this year after an achilles injury in pre-season.
Joining him in the squad are Kayne Pettifer, selected for the first time after recovering from a knee reconstruction last year, Andrew Raines, after he injured his knee in round one, Mitch Morton, Will Thursfield and Nathan Brown.
Out go Alex Rance after his horrific weekend head-clash with Lion Troy Selwood that left him with a fractured cheekbone, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Jay Schulz.
Richmond football manager Ross Monaghan told richmondfc.com.au it was good to be getting players back from injury.
"Cotch is good – he's had a long lead-in, of course, and his form in the VFL has been good. He just needed the ground time to get him to the stage where he can play AFL footy again," he said on Thursday afternoon.
"He's been training really well for a number of weeks and we're really looking forward to him coming into the side.
"Browny should be right, and while a lot of it depends on how he comes up each time, all indications are that he should play.
"And Kayne is another good story – he's worked so hard over the summer to get himself to the stage where he can play some footy, and he's showed at VFL level that he's ready to go."
An inconsistent forward line will welcome Morton back with open arms.
"Mitch gives a bit extra in the forward line, there's no question about that," Monaghan said.
"Bringing Rainsey back in is a good sign; his VFL form has been okay, so we're looking forward to having him back, and Will Thursfield – Will's been plugging away at VFL level and playing consistently solid footy."
With Coburg playing on Saturday, the Tigers will decide on Friday what to do about taking an emergency, having travelled to Sydney a couple of weeks ago without one.
"We'll decide that tomorrow – because Coburg play on Saturday we don't want blokes to miss out on a game, so we'll decide tomorrow if we take one over with us, or whether they play with Coburg and then come over Sunday morning, or whether we just take a punt on them all coming up okay."

Great come back by Pett's really I hope he plays and plays well, great to see Cotch back as well, well done to Raines as well. Cogs, Thursty, Petts and Nahas for the bench, the rest need to go back to the Burgers to find themselves again and Riewoldt needs to stop reading about himself.
GO BROWNY at least you are over the injury...... we hope. :pray
-
I can't say that I'm overly impressed with this team. It looks way too short at both ends of the ground. Thursfield should have been straight into the starting back six for Rance. No certainty he'll make the cut. Mitch Morton is way too short to play CHF. Not happy to see Brown or Pettifer back to tell the truth. The only pluses for me are the return of Cotchin and Raines.
-
Happy to see Cotch back although he'll probably be underdone and like Cuz last week will be rotated on and off the ground in 10 minute runs.
Seeing Petts in will make some supporters happy lol.
Thursty is a straight swap for Rance as far as height in the backline although Rance is more of a rebounder than Thursty is.
I'd be surprised if Browny plays unless he trains tomorrow. He hasn't yet trained.
I know Jack had a shocker but I would give him a massive rocket this week to perform rather than drop him. I would've done the same with Morton last week. That forward 6 named has no tall structure if we're relying on Simmo to be our only tall.
-
Why are people so down on Nathan Brown, I think they forget what a fit Brown can do. I was pretty obvious that he was carying an injury coming into round 1 and it did not get any better, lets just hope he can turn it around. Not sure if Thursty actuall deserves immediate call up either, he has not performed for Coburg and Rawlings assessment of him since he has been with Coburg has been less than flattering.
I am not sure what other options based on form we actually have.
-
Our opponents. Kane Cornes must be doubtful.

Let's hope Thursty thanks to this recall finds his 2008 form back on Sunday. He's obviously got a second chance with Rance out injured.
I'm not down on Browny. All I was saying is I don't think he is over his groin injury yet unless the Club planned for him to have the light training sessions off this week and he trains tomorrow. If he doesn't train tomorrow then he must be doubtful to play.

Totally agree on Thursty wold love to see make an impact, very important to have him up and going. Wasn't haveing a shot at you regarding Brown, just generalising and your post went through just before mine so I hadnt even read yours... :thumbsup

Out- JON, Schulz, Foley, Jack, Edwards, Simmo, All but Jack & Foley never ever to play again for our club
In- Vickery, Thursfield, Raines($$), Pathetic Pettifer($$), Patto($$) Cotch
Simmo unlucky because he played okay but enough is enough we need to find a forward and he aint our future.
I dont give a crap how they are performing at VFL level. We need to play the young ones not recycling the same old Browns, JON's and Schulz.
-
I would like to see Thursty play....just in case Moore pops his shoulder again and we are forced to play Bowden on Tredrea.
I never thought I would say this but Im happy to see Petts in the side. One thing for sure....he couldn't go worse than Shultz.
Seeing Lids & Cotch in the same centre line gets me orgasmic.
-
lets not put too much pressure on thursty
-

Me and Daniel are backing him to kick a bagful this week.
And if doesnt and has a shocker were gunna back him through thick and thin
That last comment may not be true
-
Riewoldt will be dropped this week for Pettifier. I don't necessarily agree with that but given his form of late Jack really needs to start kicking some goals.
I don't think Thursfield will return this week with Raines taking Rances place atm. I would like to see a fully in form and fit Thursty take the field but his Coburg form has been average at best of late.
Petts game will be judged as much on his defensive pressure as his scoring ability. He is a mid-sized forward who plays like a tall leadup forward. He needs to add crumbing and chasing down defenders to his game if he is to have any chance of remaining at the club. Beautiful kick for goal though which is something we are definately missing in the team of late.
Cotchin is one player who can make an impact even if he is coming off the bench in spells. Just has that 'time' that all great players seem to have.

thursty is physically fit, other issues are keeping him out of the side

I can't believe that people are advocating leaving Riewoldt and Thursfield out, and having Raines take Rance's place. We were too short last week after Rance went down, and Johnathan Brown started to dominate. And now we want to go even shorter. Who's going to stop Tredrea? Kelvin Moore with a sore shoulder? Going in with McGuane and Moore as your only key defenders is like meekly putting our heads on the chopping block. And if Port send down a resting ruckman then it'll be game over.
In a similar vein, I can't believe our midget forward line. Mitch Morton at CHF? Simmonds our only tall option? Yeah, ideally Riewoldt should have been dropped to Coburg to re-discover some form. But we can't afford to do that when we've already dropped Schulz, yet haven't replaced them with any tall forward options. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Schulz fan. But our structure is just all wrong. Maybe one of the biggest reasons we go round and round in circles when delivering the ball, is that the players look upfield and don't see a reliable marking target. Yet instead of biting the bullet and trying to address this glaring weakness by trying a Vickery, Gourdis, Post or Browne up forward we go even shorter.
And as for the suggestion that Pettifer might apply some defensive pressure, asking him to change is like entrusting a ferret with a henhouse.
-
Good point Rolls Royce......What happens when Port rest a ruckman in the forward line. McGuane and Moore are going to need help.

Whatever the Thursfield mystery is, it would have been useful to have elevated Silvester for just this situation.

We doeed that group of players to leave the potential group into the performers group. Add Edwards, Shultz, Hughes, Conners, Collins to that list

Do you like anything about Richmond?
-
I don't think lack of height is a major issue this week as Port aren't that tall up forward except for Lade. That IMO is the key match up. He has just started to get back in form. If we can contain him and possibly Tredrea then the rest of their forwards are smurfs like us.
-
Amazing what six days can do.....Im really looking forward to the game on Sunday. The team has been picked and I will support it 100%.
All we can ask for is a solid 4 quarter effort .

You honestly don't think height is an issue Tiga? Aside from having to counter Tredrea, who is a giant of a man,we also have Kelvin Moore giving away 9cm and a whopping 18kg to Lade. Then there's the issue of our equally pygmy-sized forward line. I'll be happy to be proven wrong on Sunday, but I can see this getting very, very ugly indeed.
-
interesting comments by all, as he hasnt got a career as yet, as he hasnt established anything worth any bragging rights . being ""lively and enthusiasic is hardly a career.
on Schulz, I hope someone can report back on his efforts at coburg,
How many times the index finger twirls around when he kicks a goal ? And how high his knees get when he takes the big steps in his dance routine. :lol
I wonder if he can do the dance and the finger twirl at the same time :shh

in relative terms he's performed a whole lot better (NAB rising star) than any of the other talls drafted same year...Gumbleton, Sellars, Hanson and Thorpe...would be premature to write him off just yet :o
-
Just 5 players 190cm+ and no tall forwards. Any chance of torrential rain in Adelaide :-\.
Graham 201cm
Simmo 197cm
McGuance 191cm
Thursty 191cm
Moore 190cm

Pick 13 actually
The guy has played his first AFL game therefore his AFL career has started
Be as pedantic as you like, it's far too soon to write him off
-
With regards to Jack-Not too many 20 yr olds dominate the competition as a key forward......Yes he is very inconsistant atm but I would love to see him with 50 more games under his belt.
-
Loks like a pretty stable side and good to see Raines, Pett's and Cotch back in, it may provide us with a bit more confidence and take Port a bit by surprise on how to handle these players.
Reiwoldt does need to go back to Coburg however calls for his head are nothing short of ridiculous and typical of the small minded people making this call.
-

yes your correct Imfamy my mistake sorry ;D he was taken pick 13, How could l forget that draft we then took the runt Edwards ;D How they have both bulked up over them few years & got games when we had players like Collins who comes in, performs & hold his spot & looks like a AFL player
Very sad drafting by the club that year l think Conners was a later pick. Now his a selfish player if l ever seen one, not a team player but has been told & not so cocky now.
-
FWIW, I agree with the decision to drop Jack (Reiwoldt, not Star ;D ) for this week but I am very confident he will make it as a successful player. His current inconsistency is very normal in kids his age and when he plays well he plays very well - I've seen enough of that from him to be very happy to keep him.
-
Even the great Richo got dropped early in his career.....This may turn out to be the best thing to happen to young Riewoldt.
He will be back in the team soon.
-
Jack needs to work on his endurance like his cousin. He seems really slow out there at times and im not sure if its his fitness or he is slow in general but we need to work him hard in the off season.
I believe we have a player in Jack. He has hunger which i like and he loves playing for our club.
Schulz take note you are a disgrace to our club not to mention lazy and selfish and if i see you take the field again il :banghead

Richmond coach Terry Wallace will field his strongest side against Port Adelaide
By Jesper Fjeldstad
May 17, 2009
Richmond coach Terry Wallace says the true worth of his team will be judged as the Tigers seek to emulate last year's round 13 upset of Port Adelaide.
At the top of the list of important inclusions for Richmond are Nathan Brown and Andrew Raines, who will add class to a side that has had no problems in getting its hands on the ball but butchered it on its way to a 1-6 record.
Add to that Ben Cousins, who is playing himself into the form that tempted the Tigers to sign him in spite of a year out of the game.
AAMI Stadium holds few fears for the Tigers, who have won there against Port in two of their past three matches and named their strongest side on paper for the season.
"It probably is (our strongest team for the year) from an experience point of view," Wallace said during a light training session on Saturday afternoon.
"We've had a few inexperienced sides in for the first five or six rounds.
"This is a lot closer to what we expect to be fielding as a team.
"Obviously a couple of guys are underdone, so we're probably three or four weeks away from exactly where we want to be. But certainly, from a personnel point of view, it's our strongest side."
Wallace talked up the beleaguered ground, but his view will be countered by critics as being coloured by Richmond's recent wins there.
"It's a great venue and I think from a pure footy perspective - the ground and the size of the ground - most teams would like to play at the venue," he said.
"Against Port Adelaide, two out of the last three we've managed to come away with the points.
"But it's not a history lesson. Every circumstance is different."
