Terry Wallace told Mitch Morton `You've cost me my job'
Jay Clark and Sam Edmund | May 20, 2009 09:32pm
A POST-MATCH tirade by Terry Wallace at forward Mitch Morton sparked the crisis meeting that saved Wallace's coaching career.
Wallace is believed to have put many players off-side with a bitter spray - "you've just cost me my career" - at Morton, whose last-minute blunder saw Richmond lose by three points to Port Adelaide on Sunday.
Senior Richmond players demanded meaningful on-field changes at yesterday's meeting with Wallace.
Captain Chris Newman and head of football Craig Cameron pledged their commitment to Wallace in front of a massive media pack, insisting there were no plans to remove him this season.
It is not the first time Morton has frustrated coaching staff and teammates.
Despite leading the goalkicking after six rounds, it is believed Morton was dropped to Coburg for a week for failing to put the team first. The clash against Port Adelaide was his first game back.
Newman said Wallace had the players' support and the meeting was designed to change elements of the team's on-field approach.
"I thought it was a good opportunity for the playing group and the coach to sit down and plan out a few things about where we are going to go in the future. We are sitting 1-7. We need to start to make a few changes on-field and start to tinker with that," he said.
Richmond's leadership group and Wallace were absent from Punt Rd training yesterday, holding the emergency meeting with president Gary March at his Port Melbourne office.
Wallace did not attend a board meeting as planned last night. Cameron and March briefed directors on yesterday's developments.
The coach spent the afternoon watching tapes of Essendon - Richmond's opponent in Saturday night's Dreamtime match at the MCG.
Wallace received a visit from former Richmond football manager and long-time friend Paul Armstrong.
Cameron denied the club considered sacking its besieged coach.
"What we discussed . . . was how we start to turn our season around from 1-7, and for all of us to be on the same page and heading in the same direction," Cameron said.
"At the moment Terry is our coach. He's our coach for the future, and we have set - as I have said a number of times today - the direction we want to take for the rest of the season."
Asked how Wallace was feeling, he said: "Terry's ready to coach us against Essendon."
March, who has indicated Richmond would only renew Wallace's contract if the club made finals, emerged from last night's board meeting to repeat that the position would be reviewed mid-season.
"Nothing has changed. I don't know how many more times we're going to say we're going through a process," March said. "Of course he (Wallace) was discussed. So was our football department, our finances and everything we normally discuss."
March denied Wallace and the players cancelled training.
"It wasn't crisis talks. It was more, 'How do we get ourselves out of this situation? Why aren't we getting over the line? What other things do we need to do to get back on the winners list?'," he said.

Hmmmmm interesting, while it was a bad mistake by Morton, blaming the loss on one particular instance and then relating it to the end of his career at RFC is extremely poor form.
-
so ironic that he had a say in bringing Morton to the club.
How he could single him out when there are 2 people running around Coburg who are a disgrace to be wearing the club colours.
J.Schulz and Mcmahon. What did he say to them? A pat on the back and a well done. Give me a break!!
Too little too late Wallet. 5 years ago he should have insisted on team rules and disciplines, instead of letting the majority of the playing group get away with an average of 1-2 tackles a game and minimal 1%'s.
What about Browny that week when he kicked 7 behinds or what about Sugar's miss from 15 metres out that cost us a game. if he got it we would have made finals and hence saved his job. Did they get a bath too???
stuff enough is enough get this idiot out of our club FFS

It still should have stayed behind closed doors - how did the media find out about it :banghead

Yeah we've had things leaking out for years but it has been at its worst in the last 8-12 months I reckon
Or am I just being too cynical?

The president needs to slowly leak different pieces of information to different people to see what gets out and what doesn't.

Loose lips sink ships :-\. We know who the worst leakers are too:whistle
We are way too media friendly for mine as well. We act out every decision the club makes in a media conference. We even seem to hold media conferences to tell them we are going to do something and hold a later media conference to say how we did it. It would be nice for a change that the club just shut up and leave out making midseason decisions :banghead.
-
some of us told u so!!!!!!
terry is gutless, how dare he blame a player for his career, since when is his career the most imp thing, why could he say something like selfish acts cost the team a win, but i bet when mitch kicked that great goal on the boundary the prick never said that goal may save my career, or if his kick oob ended up in the goal square
terry is a loser and a squib

It's an AFL footy club. It's big business. Professional (supposedly ::) ) careers are on line all over the place and things are said in the heat of the moment all the time which don't need to be said especially straight after a bad loss like on Sunday. This should've been sorted out in house behind closed doors in the light of day when everyone had cooled off. But nup not a Richmond :banghead. It's leaked out into the media that we have a coach who lost his cool at a player and a playing group that are soft sooky la las because they don't like being yelled out after stuffing up and grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory once again. God help the RFC :help.

Most sensible thing I've read in days.

How do we know this is true, as far i can read the operative word was "believe". Sorry guys im skeptical after yesterdays stunt. By the way, why not put the blame on some players? They are the ones in control

of course everyone is to be blame bar your beloved Wallace.
The players have had enough of his game plan and on field crap. The tip of the iceberg was his spray
The writing was on the wall after the Geelong smashing, we all just fell for it yet again.

;D l mentioned about Morton in another thread.
l'm backing Wallace on this one as Morton is not doing the team things. expect him dropped this week. Rewoldt in ;D
Richmond should never have lost that game in those conditions but thats football this year, The tigers aint the only club suffering these loses.

Sorry TM but i dont believe that for a second
how about the game plan, recruiting, playing players like Schulz and mcmahon. Of course that had nothing to do with his demise.
TM this was not the fault of Morton on this occasion. Our players have been playing like this for 5 years and only NOW he deicdes to instill some hard team disciplines.
GIVE ME A stuffin BREAK.
HE MADE HIS BED NOW HE HAS TO LIE IN IT
-
Daneil son ;D who are Shulzs & McMahon ;D
Morton was not the cost of the game but his not obeying the team rules thats what l'm pointing out & have done on another thread l bumped
There was more to Mortons game that he had caught Wallace attention
We lost the game because we should have manned them up, instead we left them open to move the ball quicker & down the corridor is punishable
Tredrea is the reason we lost also as his in superform & Bowden being the 3rd opponant on him keeping him quite while we got ourselves back into the game was a good effort against a powerful man. Tredrea pushed Bowden in the dying moments to get that ball which should have been a resulting free kick to us. How many times has Richo been pinged for such actions
Rewoldt was run down against Sydney which was a free kick to them, but we did the same action against Port & the result from the umpire was not the same umpiring result, Why is that ? l beleive the umpires have a huge impact on Richmond games this year alone
-
The writing was on the wall after the Geelong smashing, we all just fell for it yet again.
Geelong smashing? the one 3 years ago
This year Geelong beat us by 20 or so points
Daniel, if you are going to rant some FACTS would be appreciated ;D :thumbsup

Considering neither Schulz nor McMahon played against Port I'm not sure what they had to do with it, McMahon has barely played seniors this year and Schulz has been in and out all year.
The coaching of the side got us into a winning position against Port after a pretty large defecit earlier on, so the game plan can't be that bad. It was the players stupidity that lost the game in the dying minutes. There's not anything a coach can do to change the game with 90 seconds to go, the players need to take some initiative to do the right things, things they should know from playing the game as a 10 year old.
-
It still should have stayed behind closed doors - how did the media find out about it :banghead
There would be 22+ ways I can think of that it got leaked.
Players get home, speak to parents/friends, and it snowballs from there.
-
Players need to HTFU. Geez, if they're worried about what the coach says in the heat of the moment after a game that we had on toast, then they should take up tennis or golf.

Understand all that wayne
But Robbo said at least twice (it may have been 3 times) on SEN yesterday that he heard things from a senior person inside the club... that doesn't sound like player's families etc to me

I missed that bit.

If they get a new coach he wont be powdering their bums and tucking them in at night if that's what they want.
Easy to blame the coach - The players on the field lost the game we should have won simple as that.
In any business, when there is pressure on as there is at Richmond things are going to be said in the heat of the moment.
Bet it never has happened at any other club ::)

I've captained a side before and I honestly believe Newmans intentinos were correct.
Player/Coach relationship is so important.
Everyone knows that Wallace isn't going to be here next year. What does the group gain from working under Terry for a pointless few weeks. Newman has seen that his team mates are suffering. Let them suffer under next years coach.
It doesn't look perfect but all I see is that Chris is trying to mend the relationship and the most obvious way is to inject the new coach sooner rather than later. Its obvious Terry wont leave to make him self look better than he did when he quit the Bulldogs. For mine Newman just pointed out the elephant in the room. As a leader it's what I woudl have done.
From the board point of view I think they also did the right thing by saying that "Hey we run thr club, we'll decide when he goes."
Hopefully that is after the review in 3 weeks. = Perfect scenario
-
If you fail to carry out instructions you will cop the wrath of the coach & he has every right. Morton has failed several times now & will face his actions
Newman is a poor example of a leader & should have thought over it alot better. he should stepdown as captain
-
Oh absolutly right. Terry has all the right an din his job description to coach the side, if that means ripping the paint off the walls then so be it.
If the majorty of the players think the coach is a clown and begin to disagree with the direction and procedures the coach is heading towards then the captain will be the first person to pick up on it.
Newman did exactly what I woudl have done and brought this to the light of the coach. The only thing he has done wrong is to hint the coach to move on. If this was true at all.
I woudl have done the same thing. Newman countlessly said the meeting was to all be on the same page. If 50% of the players are unhappy for any reason the skipper to get everyone on teh same page is a perfect act of leadership.
Doing nothing and let the players rot in there own skins woudl have been a very soft way of leading your team.
-
its players like Chris who have dropped off this season. His leadership has been poor onfield IMO
Newman said in public the players were 100% behind the coach & then to come out & ask him to move on is pushing the fine line & the truth
This has been going on for sometime that the players & coach had lost each other but all parties were in denial
Wallace must have some claus in his contract to keep himself alive & l hope he gives it to the players
You can tell by the way the players present themselves on the field that they are not playing for the coach & want Sheedy to coach
Sheeds is ready to coach them
-
I can't believe that everyone is getting their knickers in a knot over something reported in the Hun.
If you read the Age article the interpretation of what was said to Mitch (and another ) is rather different.
Let's face it that gutter rag has egg all over it's face (again) and is trying to justify itself.
And the usual suspects here are falling all over themselves and gorging on the Club's so called mismanagement blah blah blah....
-
This is apt:

-
So the coach spat the dummy "Geez what a rarity that must be' and some players feelings got hurt 'tough titties' really.
Even though it is all a media beat up some just need to harden the stuff up
-

Easy to blame the coach - The players on the field lost the game we should have won simple as that.
Unless its one of our current assistant coaches
Its one of the reasons I think we need a clean sweep, get rid of everyone
-
A little clarity people.
Would Mitch or any player be more upset about a coach on his last hurrah telling you that your misdemeanour was the reason he will lose his job
or
Would Mitch or any player be more upset if his WAG told him he could not perform in the sack no longer.
Won't be the first or last player at RFC or any club who will get told off by a coach. A little thick skin is required so some character and prove to the world you are worthy. As for Terry...................
-
But Robbo said at least twice (it may have been 3 times) on SEN yesterday that he heard things from a senior person inside the club...
Probably the pensioner who feeds the cat.

Luv ya fishy :thumbsup :thumbsup :rollin :clapping

Yeah look probably not the best thing Terry has said but God help these players when the next coach comes in. I have never seen Tery Wallace berate a player on the ground but these are the coaches curently coaching that I have seen absolutely give some players a baking in front of the country:
Malthouse
Williams
Thompson
Eade
Laidley
Craig
Knights
Clarkson
Roos
Worsfold
Never mind the past Coaches like Parkin & Sheedy or Jewl (the mouth at the moment), what about Walls (when he was not coaching Richmond). So with the above list I could only imagine what would get said and what has been said behind closed doors. The problem as I mentioned the other night is that our recent coaches in Geisham, Frawley and now Wallace have been too "nice".
Do we really think Wallace's comments to Morton were the wost thing that has been said to a player by a coach....... I really doubt it. But because they want Wallace's head and we are the RFC, we will always get screwed for everything that happens and it sucks.
Wake up Tiger players you are going to get a real shock with the next coach and I can't stuffing well wait because you all need it!!
-
Could you imagine if our coach was Malcolm Blight and he said "Pathetic Pettifer" or something to that effect.
The whole team would boycott the rest of the season and may even end in tears.
After all how could he dare say something like that, its not as if he was a premiership coach.

Hold the phone. Blight wasn't a premiership coach either when he made those comments in 1997.

exactly thats the point im making. Could you imagine if Blight was out coach. What would they do then??
What chance do we have when our players are a bunch of women on steroids who cant handle a few home truths.
what an embarasment we are to be playing in this comp.

The sooner we clear out the senior players and cloggers such as Kingy (I used to love this guy for his passion) the better. They are passing on the culture we all despise - one captain to the next :banghead
Stripes

Kingy l wish we had a few more players like him, he needs another chance next to Nahas
-

I see where your coming from if only his skill matched his attitude. May deserved another chance but his skills aren't up to AFL standard. Be good if some of his attitude rubbed off onto some other players
-
his got the skill he just needs to polish up on a few things & pick better options, l'm sure he will get another chance.
l like to see him come in this week cause if you ever noticed his always ruffing the colored people ;D my son keeps saying it to me
