DESPITE feeling like a "barnacle on a boat" due to his injury, Richmond’s Matthew Richardson says he's looking forward to having his brother-in-law as coach.

Jade Rawlings was appointed on Saturday to lead Richmond through the rest of the season after Terry Wallace was removed half-way through the last year of his five-year deal.

Richardson talked up his sister's husband, saying he was well-respected, a good communicator and capable of delivering a good spray.

"I haven't played under him at Coburg, and I guess I was always hoping I wouldn't play under him in that regard," Richardson said on Wednesday.

"He'll keep things fairly simple – there's no point re-inventing the wheel half-way through the year.

"He's got the respect of all the players around the place and everyone's comfortable with the decision.

"Jade was the forward-line coach last year and the year before, so I had a lot to do with him for a couple of years, and I was treated like everyone else.

"Just because he's married to my sister, that's his private life, but his job is to coach players at this club and he coached me like anyone else.

"And if I deserve a bake he gives it to me."

Richardson said he hadn't discussed the selection strategies for the rest of the season with Rawlings.

"When you're in rehab you're a bit of a barnacle on a boat, so I'm not involved in all the meetings, so I don't know what his philosophy's going to be.

"I reckon he'll just pick the best team each week, whether that's younger guys or older guys, I guess it's about getting wins for the footy club.

"I guess you'll find out with his selections in the next few weeks."

While still on the sidelines with a hamstring tendon injury, Richardson said he was still ahead of schedule but was hoping to get a month of footy in before the end of the season.

"I'd like to be out there helping the club try to get some wins on the board and supporting the young players and the new coach, but that's not the case,” Richardson said.

"I'm hoping to get out there again by the end of the year and do my bit.

"Realistically, if I got a month of football in at the end of the year that would be a pretty good case.

"I'm back running – as of Wednesday I'll start doing some more acceleration-type running, I've just been jogging up to this stage.

"In the next two or three weeks we'll start picking up the pace and then you probably need two or three weeks of good full training before you can be considered for selection, so the last month probably would be an ideal scenario."

Must be weird for Richo. Not only his brother-in-law, but 3 years his junior and they both grew up in Devonport. Did they go to the same school?

Now for you clowns that had a go at me about being backward for living in the West and saying that I didn't understand what Rawlings would do and how I said he would not muck around with the game plan because it was too late.

PLEASE READ WHAT RICHO IS SAYING!!!!!!!

If you can't understand that then who is the clown and gee Richo you must be from the West too mate and not Tassie.... ::)

Take a chill pill WAT.  Not all of us who disagreed with you got involved in the name calling and other silliness, and despite how you read the quoted line above, it actually backs my point as well.  "He'll keep things fairly simple" was exactly what I was saying should happen and if you think that this is replicating or not changing Wallace's game plan then we must disagree again.  One of the biggest fault's with the Wallace game plan was it's complexity and how prone it was to change mid-game.

Please smokey all the other name callers gloat in their victories so now it's my turn.. :whistle. I think you need to read Richo's comments again as you did not quote all of it; "NO point reinventing the wheel half way through the season" and that is what I was refeering to.

If that's the case how the hell does one variant, Rawlings instead of Wallace, have so much influence on team selection.  ???  ::)  :o   How much power did Wallace have?!

But I disagree WAT.  I don't see this as a victory for your call that the game plan won't be changed.  I am very comfortable with Richo's comment - we can simplify the game plan and we don't need to re-invent the wheel to do it.  From all visible and apparent/rumoured reports, the Wallace game plan had elements of attack, defend, go straight, go sideways, go forwards, go backwards, start, stop, and we played accordingly.  Not in equal measure mind you but we certainly did adhere religiously, for large periods and mediocre results.  A game plan borne of chess  - full of strategic move and counter move in the blink of an eye -but quite unrealistic in the reality of 120 minutes of AFL football.  Rawlings can change the game plan and the players can adapt to that change by focusing on certain already practiced and already proven elements - keep attacking and keep it simple.  That was my point right from the start and it hasn't changed - actually, if we don't change the game plan and the players choose not to embrace any change then we will only see a lot more of the same crap we have suffered through rounds 1-11.

Edit:  the swear filter on this site is a bit overzealous at times!!   ;)  I'm trying to use the word re[vehicle for transporting the dead]ed but it keeps coming ups as rehearsed!!
