Anyone who thought we were a realistic chance of causing an upset tonight are kidding themselves. Rawlings had coached one game and suddenly we had turned the corner. Lets get things into perspective, in Rawlings first game we beat the West Coast who's away record is appalling. Accusations of them tanking had been widespread so it shouldn't have come as a surprise to many when the young tigers tasted victory. St Kilda on the other hand have been undefeated, if anyone has been watching the way they play it is based on pressure and more pressure. They don't just hold their positions they push up constantly, they actually make ground without the ball. The tigers as we all know have well publicized skill deficiencies at the best of times but have been proven to be woeful when put under extreme pressure. In the first quarter St Kilda were unusually lazy and didn't apply their normal level of pressure. We did however run for each other but as with any young group it couldnt be sustained over four quarters and as the turnovers started we witnessed the playing group being embarrassingly ground to dust.
The most disappointing aspect of tonight's game for me was Brett Deledio. We need a coach who is going to push this guy beyond his limits. He is currently running third on "Rexona Greatest Athlete" for Gods sake yet jogs behind opposition players who he would beat by 10 metres in the Grand Final sprint. What is he saving his energy for, he is one of the more experienced playing group now where he should be able to grab a game by the scruff of the neck yet he never does. :banghead :banghead :banghead
The test for us now is how we bounce back from this next week against Adelaide. what sort of message does Rawlings want to send to the underachievers from tonight's games and who is good enough to replace them. Any of the old guard coming in would almost be an admittance of failure and a definate backward step. Adelaide are also good at turning the screws so we need to work out how to cope with pressure without falling in a heap as we did today.

Lids certainly needs to improve his defensive pressure. A new coach will need to demand every member of the team to work for each other first and themselves second. Lids need to be made to be accountable to his team mates too and made to understand that if he doesn't chase it has a trickle effect on the rest of the team.
The problem is is that Lids is not being supported by his team mates with his direct opposition so its like 'everyone for themselves' at the moment. :help

I thought we'd lose by 100+.
That we didn't with the side we put out is something.

If you have been watching 'Rexona Greatest Athlete' you must have noticed that deledio comes across as a very negative thinker

I haven't actually watched the program but hearing this point of view does make some sense of Lid's performances and even more so demonstrates how a coach also has to be skilled in the physiology of players. Whoever we get as coach needs to get into the heads of these underachievers and get them performing at a level they should reach EVERY game, not just when the situation suits them, more than a few players are guilty of this regularly.

Sunday looked like a classic case of men vs boys and the above stats prove that.
72.7% of the Richmond team that played on Sunday had played less than 50 games.
All of a sudden a 56 pt loss to a likely Grand Finalist doesn't seem so bad

Those kis keeping them goalless in the first quarter is pretty good too
Most likely youthful exuberance and no tank to keep it up for 4 quarters
Still, there's some positives there

The scoreboard and team make-up wasn't the issue but our team structure was awful with everyone behind the ball in the back half. I'd rather we stuck to what we did the week before with players ahead of the play so when we gained possession we had options up ahead to kick quickly to. Sure there was the risk we may have been blown away by 100 points playing that way but at least we wouldn't have been held goalless for half the game.

I would prefer not to lose by 100 points.
Losing by 150 points against Geelong was awful :P
