FIFTEEN men have applied to become the next coach of Richmond, but the Tigers' leading candidate may yet come from outside that list.

It is understood Nathan Buckley and Kevin Sheedy are among a group of potential replacements not required by the club to formally lodge their applications by yesterday's deadline.

Buckley has flagged his interest in the job, but is yet to decide whether to pursue a senior or assistant role for 2010, despite the rampant speculation about his future.

Sheedy will meet with Richmond officials, including general manager of football Craig Cameron and chief executive Steven Wright, for informal talks in Melbourne tomorrow.

The four-time Essendon premiership coach has expressed a desire to go through the Tigers' extensive three-stage interview process.

It comes as Rex Hunt scoffed at Sheedy's chances of becoming Richmond's saviour.

Caretaker coach Jade Rawlings, Alan Richardson, Wayne Campbell, Peter Sumich, Damien Hardwick and Ken Hinkley are believed to be among the leading contenders.

Richardson, encouraged by Richmond to apply, is seen as a hot prospect given his development expertise.

The Tigers will start interviewing candidates within a fortnight. A final decision is set to be made in September

Richmond will also speak to Laidley but right now he wants a break

Its good to see Hardwick in for the job, especially so considering rumours were around that he wasnt interested.

It's hard to judge each applicant from the outside except from what they've achieved as a player, assistant coach and lower level coach but good to see Hardwick, Hinkley and Richardson are leading candidates. I liked Richardson when he was coach of Coburg and he has a history of being a good developer of younger players.
