Title: Wooden spoon
Post by: Hellenic Tiger on July 12, 2009, 04:48:21 PM
With Melbourne winning and opening up the wooden spoon race
do we want to attain that prize this year in effect for some early picks and now absolutely surrendering games to Nth next week Melbourne in rd 18 and W Coast in rd 22 and hope that Freo beat W Coast in the derby to hand us our 2nd spoon in 3 seasons all for the sake of the earliest draft pick. I think Melbourne play Freo as well so in theory they could get to 5 wins. I certainly hope so.

Thoughts.

Would be great to get Scully but Freo have well and truly put the cue in the rack and wont win another game.
The next 3 games are critical if we want Scully, must let Kangaroos and Melbourne defeat us in the coming weeks.  Do this and things on the draft front are looking up.
Keep playing the kids isa ll we need to do.

I don't want the spoon
Best result for us would be Freo getting the spoon, us 15th with 4 wins and West Coast & Melbourne with 5 wins or more.

That way Freo will most likely go for the local kid in Morabito, leaving us Scully and two picks at 18 & 20ish.

Be a horribly sad day if Tom Scully was drafted to Fremantle.

I want Tom Scully at Richmond. We now have a chance of getting him. We must go full on TANK.

I'm just hoping now Melbourne miss out on the priority pick altogether so they don't get two early picks. I could sit comfortably with us having a bottom 2 pick. That would give us one of Scully or Butcher (whoever isn't #1) and then provided we stay within the 4 win limit we'll also get picks 17 and 19.

If Scully goes to Freo then like other Vics he may want to head back home in a few years with free agency coming  :whistle.

Tank tank tank

Give up 8 goals in the first quarter next week against the Shinboners and be 6 goals down at quarter time and maintain that margin throughout the day. Play King on Corey Jones again. Much like the round 2 game last year. Crocker has to win one eventually.
Roos get their 5th win and gets them away from the coveted priorities.

Essendon are playing for the finals so they'll beat us as they have the motivation to do so.

Melbourne: Keep Richo in cotton wool for another week. Give the Dees a start get within 3 or 4 goals miss a few set shots and off we go get the Dees to their fourth win.

Swans will be Mickey O's 300th. Enough motivation for them to win. When Paul Williams played his 300th we lost by 20 goals at the dome. Of course different years and different teams but we traditionally struggle against them. No use bucking the trend in this one.As a side dish if Foley is fit get him nice and fired up for this one just so he can give the Swans something to mull over.................... yet we still let Mickey O kick 3 in the last quarter to get the Swans over the line in this one.

Magpies will be a tough one as it might be a swansong to a Brown or a Bowden as it is our home match. Nevertheless we need to go down fighting for the greater good and suck in the deep breaths and accept it. It's for the future. Let the Skunks belt out their laugh and fib of a clubsong. As a small consolation hopefully it cements the Pies top 4 spot and we watch them fail abysmally to St Kilda and Geelong in September whilst they talk themselves up.

Round 21 we have Hawthorn who may or may not be figuring still playing for finals but they will have known how we were crowing when we beat them in rd 20 last year. Perhaps resting Moore Thursty and a few key back men may ensure a Hawthorn win as % may have alot to with it by the time August 21 comes along.

Round 22 let the Eagles go bezerk in the first and show abit for the next 3 without making inroads into the Eagle lead.

We need now to finish 3-19 now that Melbourne have opened the door to the spoon and hope that the Dees get to 5 and Freo win one somewhere along the way. It is imperative we don't win again for the rest of the year much like Carlton lost their last 11 in 2007.

Scully must be our priority and a few mids as well. Let's not waste this last uncompromised draft with cast offs from other clubs. Just try it differently for once RFC.

Winning just one match can take us from potentially pick 1 to pick 3 or 4. Need a pick as a minimum in the first 2.

one player isnt going to solve our problems

We know acutely our problems are more deep rooted than that Jack and yes I agree with you there, however we still need to do what is right in case the off field and behind the scenes finally get it right. We still have to follow the right due course and protocols to put the club in the best position. Nothing lasts forever. At some point in time the dark clouds that have been above Punt Rd since half time of the 1982 GF have to dissipate some time. Those self indulgent string pullers at the club will go sometime, hopefully sooner rather than later and perhaps a changing of approach on how we do things internally may be the catalyst for them to go. :pray

Whoever that 1 player may be we may build a team around a Scully with a Cotchin Lids and Rance or a combination of those players. Richo won't be around forever he will need to be replaced.

Cotchin Tambling Deledio Scully ... not a bad quartet midfield wise. If we could get one more early pick- Im still saying Sydneys pick is available ... then we can add another good young player. Then with our priority pick and early 2nd round pick we would have brought in 4 very decent youngsters.

The admin needs to step in here. Rawlings is still looking for wins to assist in his chances of securing the top job. Surely by now he realizes his chances are next to nought at the moment and accepts that the caretaker role will look good on his CV but beyond that he is still lacking in experience.

We need a member of the board in the coaching box every week just to ensure that when we look like winning we need to get creative with positioning and our use of the bench.

Rawlings left to his own devices will go for glory

How do you know he isn't doing exactly what he's been asked to do?   ::)

And BTW someone from senior management is sitting in the box every week .... you may have heard of him... CRAIG CAMERON is the blokes name

Cameron said on Saturday that they've instructed Jade on what the Club wants when he was first given the caretaker gig. Yep Jade is under and following instructions from above.

So if Freo finish with less than 5 games won they don't get two early picks like pick 1&3 if the Dees and Eagles win 5 or more do they?

Isn't the Dees and the Eagles the only two teams that can cash in should they not win more than 4?

Yep, that's right, Freo will get a 2nd pick at the start of the 2nd round just like we will if we get a PP

Don't get bitter on me WP. You're better than that.

I've seen Cameron in the box and thought he was there was a specific reason. Could be to gauge Rawlings ability. I understand you would like us to develop a winning culture as of yesterday and find the thought of tanking abhorent but I am passionate in my belief that winning games this year will not be a positive for our future.

I am convinced that the administration and Rawlings are unified in their focus on winning this year with the youth. I agree that playing the youth to give them experience and to showcase their talent is paramount but do we need to sacrafice our draft selections?

You will get your wins WP, infact we will probably win 3 to 5 before the year is out but I believe in is in the clubs best interests to foget the present and play for the future.

Sorry if you disagree

Bitter ... er nope.

Just replying to your idea that the club should step in now to ensure we don't win anymore games. Only point I was trying to make was they have stepped in as Cameron is in the box every week so they are there already over seeing. I also questioned how do you know he isn't doing exactly what they've asked him to do?
