Richmond is expected to seek to interview former North Melbourne coach Laidley when he returns from an overseas holiday to the US on August 5. Laidley and his wife flew out of Australia today.
Another serious contender, Collingwood assistant Brad Scott, is weighing up whether to pursue the Richmond job.
While Richmond has contacted Scott's management and asked him to apply — Scott was not one of the formal applicants — the Magpies' midfield coach and ex-Brisbane Lions premiership player is expected to decide soon whether he wants to be part of Richmond's intensive process of finding the next coach.
Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse is believed to have told Scott that he is ready to be a senior coach, but the former Lion — who does hold that ambition — is considering whether the circumstances are right for him to go further with the Tigers.
Scott is contracted for 2010 at Collingwood, and is highly regarded by the Magpies.
Other contenders from the ranks of assistant coaches, who are set to be interviewed by the Tigers' panel in the coming days, include Hawthorn's Damian Hardwick, Geelong's Ken Hinkley, Essendon's Alan Richardson, Bulldog Leon Cameron — who has the advantage of recent Richmond playing experience — Eagle Peter Sumich, the current caretaker Jade Rawlings, and Brisbane's Justin Leppitsch.
Nathan Buckley has already spoken to the Tigers informally and indicated an interest in the position.
Sydney's John Longmire, long considered a potential successor to Paul Roos, has not applied and is believed to be keener on the coaching position at his old club, North Melbourne.
Longmire and others will only enter the picture at North Melbourne in the event that the club does not secure Buckley.
The North Melbourne board will receive a report at next week's board meeting with a briefing on the Buckley situation and the outline of a plan B.

Hinkley, Hardwick, Scott, Lepitch. Thinking about them gives me a strange feeling that they could actually make a difference, especially where they have just come from and witnessed first hand. Clubs who know how to be successfull. Positive. :thumbsup

Why are we approaching people to ask them to apply? Is this part of the exhaustive process or are we not satisfied with those who have applied already?

I also like the calibre of the candidates applying, Hardwick and Hinkley in particular. Bucks is getting pressure from North now to make up his mind a month before our process is completed. Collingwood is also attemting to engineer a handover 'assistant coach-in-waiting' position for Bucks at their club. I think the
Tigers should feel no pressure at all now either way given the quality of the competition for the role.

Swap TW for a skinnier, younger version of the same thing!!! I thought this process was about change, the future and ending mediocrity at Richmond once and for all? It was a real nice line for the papers but if they choose Laidley, then that's all that it was.

Brad Scott said tonight clubs have approached his manager about a senior coaching job (ed. presumably Richmond is one of them) but he's been concentrating on his assistant role at the Pies so he hasn't been involved in anything yet.
