Interesting
That's not what Benny Gale was saying yesterday pre-match at a function :-\
Gale was going on about free agency on the next collective bargaining agreement
BTW he also praised the Club's "process" regardign the new coach and that with some patience we have the makings of a good side

Press conference at 11 - but not sure what it's about.
-
AFL Players association chief executive Brendon Gale will later this morning be announced as the new CEO of Richmond football club, replacing Steven Wright.
Richmond has called a press conference for 11am to confirm the appointment.
The signing is a major coup for the Tigers, the highly respected Gale long expected to be earmarked for a senior role at the AFL.
Under Gale's stewardship, the earnings of AFL players have sky-rocketed, the average player now earning over $200,000.
Gale played 244 games for the Tigers between 1990 and 2001. He is a close friend of former teammate Tony Free, Richmond football director and board member.
Gale's appointment will make Richmond a more attractive target for prospective recruits, with Gale's reputation as an advocate of player welfare ensuring him the respect of the industry.
The AFLPA is meeting today, with Matt Finnis a likely candidate as interim executive.

this is it people.
okay wright has done a good job but i think this is a step in the right direction.
Gale is a proven winner in his role. He knows what it takes and will deliver the goods
next stop BALME???? Please
-
Very strange, I thought Gale had far bigger aspirations
As much of a big appointment this is, I certainly hope Wright wasn't pushed out by Gale's appointment and he was sought out after Wright decided to move on

Thats pathetic Jack.
You seldom write slop but that post was full of it.
Wright has done an amazing job and would have continued to do so if it wasn't for his health. We owe a lot to Wright, one very very very rock solid employee in a pretty painful era for the club on field and in extremely tough financial times off field we remained amazingly strong.
You talk a fair bit of wisdom and so called "behind the scene" knowledge but that is absolute crap and I'm insulted by it and any fair dinkum Richmond Member and supporter should too.
Wright was by no means shown the door. Incorrect and uneducated post.

Gale wants say on new coach
NEW RICHMOND chief executive Brendon Gale will play a part in appointing the club’s next senior coach.
Gale, who on Monday announced his resignation as CEO of the AFL Players’ Association to take on the main job at Punt Road, said he would finalise in the coming days exactly when he would begin work at his former club.
However, the man who will take over from Steven Wright – who will step down due to health concerns – says he will be kept abreast of any coaching developments.
The first round of interviews have already taken place for Richmond’s next full-time coach, with current caretaker coach Jade Rawlings among a host of candidates.
“I think the club has been very robust in the process it put in place and they’ve stuck to that process, but given the importance of that decision, I’d certainly have an involvement in the appointment of that coach,” Gale said upon his announcement on Monday morning.
“I think it’s extremely important for me and the coach.”

Opinion is irrelevant. Your facts are wrong.
He was not shown the door. He went on his terms and March went to find a replacement and number 1 was Benny Gale, a perfect replacement.
Your entitled to your opinion, albeit it horribly poor, if you believe Wright's work at Richmond was worthy of sacking. But to stat or insinuate that our club pushed him out of his position is 100% incorrect.

Yep, on the surface this is very good appointment, probably the best appointment we could have hoped for given the great job that Steven Wright did. Today could have been a considerable loss for the club but instead was offset by the considerable potential gain of Benny Gale.
Must also say, well done to March for pulling this off.

IMHO Steve Wright has done a great job.
- People forget he took over from Iain Campbell
- When he took he inherited an operational debt exceeding 2 million for the year
- He has made profits year on year
- He will leave a million dollar profit in a year where we have been going through Global Financial Crisis
- He did his job under pressure. It was extraordinary that he was CEO of a club where one of his employees was a board member- just disgraceful.
- He was hamstrung by Clinton Casey giving Wallace a 5 year deal
- He oversaw the negotiations for the Punt Rd Oval Redevelopment
- He oversaw negotiations to takeover Craigieburn facility and give RFC a new growth profile in terms of supporter base.
I give him 8/10. Hes done an outstanding job. He lost 2 points because our Football model is still broken but as I said he inherited a bad situation anyway.
Good luck and wish him the best.

Stephen Wright was clearly one of the best things going for the RFC in the last 5 years, for you to insinuate what you have is a disgrace
-
Gale was briefly on 3aw just before...
* Youth, pace and height in the list. So the future is looking promising. Need to find the right coach and develop the right environment to get the best out of their potential.
* Head or heart decision? A bit of a mixture. The challenge was too motivating for Gale to ignore. If you want to be a leader then a leader needs to stand up.
* Influence on footy dept in next 12 months plus? Spent a great deal of time with Craig Cameron today and he's restructuring the footy dept. The coaching process is very robust. Gale said he believes he's got a good footy knowledge but it's mainly the commercial/business side he's got to deliver. Continue to grow the Club.
* Wright solidified the Club financially with the $20m redevelopment and yearly profits. Gale said he needs to build upon that work.

Signing Brendon Gale a major coup for Tigers
Mark Stevens
August 10, 2009
ANALYSIS: THE tired social club at Punt Rd has hosted many bad news press conferences in recent times, but today was different.
Although you had to feel for departing CEO Steven Wright, who has succumbed to on-going health issues, Richmond's appointment of Brendon Gale as chief executive is a major coup.
The Tigers have been copping it in the neck for poor recruiting decisions since they took Aaron Fiora ahead of Matthew Pavlich, but Gale appears to tick all the boxes.
Box No.1: The fans won't need any convincing. He is a life member and played with "Tiger spirit".
Box No.2: After five years in charge of the AFLPA he is surely on top of the changing landscape in football, including issues such as the new Gold Coast and West Sydney teams and free agency.
Box No.3: He is a leader and the type of guy the staff and players will get behind.
Box No.4: Gale will be a far more forceful face of the Tigers, willing to take up some media slack.
Wright, for all his strengths including getting the redevelopment up and running, has never appeared comfortable as the front man.
That said, leading Richmond out of the wildnerness is a far bigger task than running the players' union.
Speculation about Gale taking over at Tigerland has been alive for at least two years. He always seemed the obvious choice - even if a place at AFL House was another option.
Now, we're about to find out how good he really is.

Yep and thats why the footy dept is competely stuffed and being completely restructured.

Read todays media releases from the Richmond Football Club.
Read how the complete Football Department is having a massive restructure.
Last time I looked , this is a football club isnt it.
If the major component of this club is broken, who is to blame, the bootstudder.
Wait and see what Brendan Gale will do..
And furthermore he will be a CEO who will be seen and heard, not in hiding!

Jack, this is something that has been part of the review of the last 12 months undertaken by CC and TF, it has and will never be the domain of the CEO to run the football department. Benny will be better served ensuring the great work of SW is carried on in terms of sponsorship/membership etc and that CC is the right man to overhaul the football department.
What you have failed to pint out in your argument is that the football department had been a basket case as a result of not having the finances to properly resource it. On the back of SW's work we are now in a position to restructure and be competitive in football department spending, so please dont cloud your argument with crap to support your thought process that Tony Sheahan continues to feed you with scoops that aren't actually factual.
Benny will be great acquisition as will the retention of SW on a consultancy basis for this club to head in the right direction.

A big thanks to Steven :clapping and welcome back Benny :)
Interesting transition for Benny. From promoting boosts to players' salaries and advocating freer player movements between clubs to now as club CEO overseeing and controlling them to fit within a budget. No doubt he's more qualified than anyone to do it and would know every trick in the book that clubs and player managers use. It's just now he's on the other side of the fence so to speak. I wonder if he'll be so pro-free agency now ;).

New CEO happy to dance with the devil he knows
Jake Niall | August 11, 2009
BRENDON Gale knew Richmond. And knowing the beast, he understood that taking on the Tigers contained great risks and even greater upside. The address - Punt Road - is a job description.
Many chief executives and coaches have found the siren call of Richmond irrestistible - the notion of restoring the down-at-heel Tigers to grandeur is inherently romantic, whether you're an ambitious outsider or, like Gale, a Richmond person.
For Terry Wallace, Danny Frawley, Greg Miller and a dozen others, Richmond was the devil's candy - they couldn't resist, and took the danger money. For Gale, it's the devil he knows.
Gale understood the institution, but he wanted some reassurance before giving up his safe, well-paid and highly respectable sanctuary at the AFL Players Association.
So he sought the counsel of a man whom he counted as a friend, one who could provide an objective, outside view of the club Gale left at the end of 2001, the last time, incidentally, the Tigers played finals.
He asked Andrew Demetriou about Richmond, ie, whether he should take the job as chief executive of a club that hitherto had been a Bermuda Triangle for a busload of coaches and administrators.
Demetriou's advice was encouraging. Yes, he told Gale, there are major challenges at Tigerland, but the potential rewards - ie, the potential of the club - were enormous. Gale had run the players' union for five years and while he'd enjoyed the work, he missed the week-to-week competition of a footy club.
And this wasn't just any club. It was Richmond, his club.
The AFL boss, with whom Gale has worked closely over the past five years in bedding down collective bargaining agreements, the contentious illicit drug code and codes of conduct for players, saw signs of the belated Great Awakening at Punt Road, portends of a better Richmond.
Gale had been first approached by Richmond president Gary March, who contacted the former 244-game Tiger once the incumbent Steve Wright had decided to quit for health reasons. Wright, diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a nervous disorder, had been told by his specialist that he ought to work ''in a low-hours, low-stress environment''.
Gale was interviewed by the majority of the club board for 2½ hours late on Friday. He saw March and vice-president Maurice O'Shannassy at the latter's Hawthorn home on Saturday and more or less accepted the job.
For March and his board, Gale's hiring is a significant coup. While the Tigers valued Wright's work on the two Fs - finance and facilities, especially the Punt Road redevelopment project - their craving for on-field success made Gale as irresistible to them as the club was to him.
Perhaps, as much as anything, Gale's appointment can change the perception of the club as an attractive place to work, as a place where careers flourish, rather than cease.
Gale brings a new level of connections and savvy. His knowledge of players, rival clubs - current and incoming - regulations and AFL plans makes him a considerable asset. Relations with the AFL hierarchy will be strengthened.
His rational, measured style will reinforce the methods of football operations chief Craig Cameron, who has been determined that the Tigers stick rigorously to a highly structured game plan in selecting the next coach.
The supporters might remain frustrated and angry as the club rebuilds, but at the coalface, rationality should prevail.
Gale obviously will become involved in the appointment of the next coach, even though he arrives mid-way through Cameron's process. As chief executive, he must have input in the hiring of the coach whose tenure - and legacy - will be forever linked to his own.
The Tigers will have Gale, a fresh young coach, plush facilities and have already reburbished the personnel in a more resourced football department. They just need better players.
