Craig Cameron has said that we will have more picks than usual in this draft.
Where do you think we'll get them from?
We need to target clubs that are playing finals. They'll be looking to top up for a shot at the flag in the next few years.
Brisbane - When teams stop Brown, they don't have much else. They may look at a Schulz, Hughes, Pettifer.
Collingwood - Ruck is still weak, so they may look at Patto. They'd probably also like Foley.
St. Kilda - They also have a lack of ruck depth, so Patto again. They've turned Dawson into a reliable player, they may back themselves to turn Patto around.
Geelong - Forward line is still a problem for the Cats, again Schulz, Hughes, Pettifer.
Adelaide - With Goodwin, Edwards and McLeod all getting on, Raines, Tuck or Coughlan.
Carlton - One of our defenders and maybe a Tuck or Coughlan seeing as Hadley has been a bust.
Hawthorn - With doubt over Croads future, one of our defenders may be a target.
-
I'm guessing Raines, Schulz, Patto, Tuck and even Foley and Silvester will be possible trade bait for us this year. Players such as JON and Pettifer will hold little to no trade value I would imagine.
Raines will definitely go and give us a 3rd round pick. Schulz could give us another 4th. Tuck could be a 2nd or 3rd round will Foley could be a late first round if he was to be traded. Silvester would only give us a late pick at best as would JON and Pettifier but this is unlikely.
Players like Simmonds and Brown may even be traded but more than likely teams will just wait until the PSD if they want to secure any of our older discards.
So all in all we should get at least one addition pick perhaps even 2 or 3 but the extra picks Cameron may be taking about is how deep we will go in the draft considering the first 5 rookie picks are taken by the Gold Coast this year, rather than through trades/priority picks etc. Who knows????

Take into account the market value of picks compared to players compared to future and past picks.
Nathan Foley for a late first round = pick 18-20 you say.
Take a look at past picks.
Dean Polo = Pick 20
Cleve Hughes = 20odd
Shane Edwards = Pick 22
Alex Rance = Pick 18
Are we willing to trade Nathan Foley a possible match winner, vice captain of 22/23 years old, for what is collectively a gamble to get players that possibly wont even male the AFL grade..
-
While I am all for us trading to get better picks, I just cant make any sense of trading Foley.
He is 23, talented, can be a match winner and is proven. Why trade him for say, pick 7, when they will only be at the same stage he is now in another 4-5 years??
If we want to get an early early pick we should dangle Tuck + Raines, he will be into his 30's when this list hits its prime and Raines is useless but rated by the media. Maybe the pair can snare something around the 18-20 mark??
I think we should throw up Cogs, Tuck, Raines, Schulz and see what we get.

Not much
To get quality you have to offer it or else find someone really dumb and the Dockers surely have woken up to their trading gaffes.

err, lopping more players ::)

Sorry, I never made mention of it, but I meant getting extra picks in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds, not having pick 89,90,91 and 92.
-
We'll get them by delisting stacks of players.

Three of the four players are in our side currently and improving all the time. So that aint to bad for mine. And to answer your question yes i would trade Foley for a chance to improve our list. Because at the moment we are not even close to beating anyone half decent. We need change and we need it fast! I just wish we were not scared to try stuff at the RFC. Have a crack for stuff sake!

This is going to shock you big tone - but I agree with you completely :thumbsup
Not a doubt in my mind we could get a late first round draft pick for Foley - Hello Sydney or Nort Melbourne ;D
-
Sydney and North aren't exactly in line to get a "late round" pick. He might be able to get a first rounder from a team like Collingwood for Tuck.
-
Roos and the Swans have done well with recycled players. The threat of falling down the ladder in the tough Sydney sporting market may see them look for more to stay competitive onfield.
Hawks are after defenders and another ruck. The latter means they are chasing after Seaby.
Cats could use another defender. The loss of Egan and Hunt have been major blows. Also apart from Harry Taylor, Scarlett, Harley and Milburn won't be around forever.
The Blues also need tall defenders.
I don't see the Pies giving up another last first rounder for a ruckman after they did that with Cameron Wood. Another hardworking ballwinner might get them interested though. Malthouse has 2 more years to win a flag as we know.
Dogs need a key forward. I guess they can try and convince Barry Hall to make a comeback. They gave up a late second rounder for MacDougall who was stuck in the WAFL. Would they be stupid and desperate enough to go for a Schulz lol. Eade like Malthouse probably has only another 2 years to deliver a flag.
Are Port still interested in Schulz? Do they want Thomson back for a 3rd rounder :scream.
With GC17 and West Sydney coming in and the draft be compromised with a 1/3 of the talent ineligible it's hard to see clubs giving up first round and early second round picks. They're too valuable in a draft that may not be that deep. At best we may get a late 2nd rounder. Player-player trades may be done also but we don't want to replace our duds with other clubs duds.

I think Collingwood would be very interested in Foley as well. Only problem is their first rounder might be pick 13-17.

I would take pick 13-17 for Foley everyday and twice on Sundays. But to be totally honest we will not get better than a mid second round this year for him. Having said that i would still think seriously about that. Time to make some tough unpopular decissions. We are that bad!
-
Is it worth putting him up for trade this season then? Why wouldn't we just offload Foley to the GC at the end of next year, im sure they will be more generous with what they give, especially with his high placings in the B&F!

Good thinking.
I reckon a lot of teams B&F's next season will be rigged...
2010 Jack Dyer Medallist - Jordan McMahon
2nd - Jay Schulz
3rd - Matty White
:rollin

If we are going to trade Foley then that is the way to do it.
Top 10 pick for sure.

But wouldn't it be a bugger if the injury that plagued (and ruined) his complete 2008 season doesn't hamper him next year and that, coupled with the benefits of a coach that gets the team playing for each other and a fully fit Cotchin by his side, he gets back to All Australian contention form. What do we do then? Cut off our nose to spite our face maybe?

Yep you would want to make sure that the player we draft with Axel's trade would be a very very good player.

Sandilands wants out of Freo.
He'd solve our ruck problems, but we'd have to say goodbye to pick 3/4 and a gun youngster.

Eagles' first draft pick for sale
JOHN Worsfold has left open the possibility of West Coast trading its first pick at this year's NAB AFL Draft.
Worsfold said the club would pursue a small forward either during trade week or at November's draft would part with its round one selection if the right player was available.

How about all four for pick 6.
:cheers
-
No way, Nahas is too skinny for West Coast
We need to keep him
-
From our lot they would only take Rance.

Play him forward these last two rounds, make sure that he kicks a couple of bags and we might have a pick 6 :pray
-
I don't think we should get hopeful of getting another 1st rounder this year, it seems clubs are very conservative this year, that comment by Worsfold was out of the box a little. I think we are better off seeing what we can raid out of the GC bag o' goodies, I think we could get two of their first round picks; Foley for one of their first 2 picks and say a McGuane packaged in with one of our 22-30 players (Raines) for a late 1st rounder. Or am I dreaming with the McGuane one.
This is almost sacriligious talking about the captain like this but:
Chris Newman, what if we could get a 1st round pick off the GC for him. Would you take it?
At the end of 2010 Chris Newman will have played 170 odd games without playing in a final for the club.
-
I have siad this before Foley is our best hope of getting a 1st round draft pick from one of the first ten sides
-
Newman can get a first rounder as well. I would maybe be putting both up.
Seduce the clubs with the captain. Many will be infatuated and we may get a first rounder for Newy as well. I reckon Newy will fit in at North Melb perfectly. Would be another Troy Makepeace for the Sh1tboners.
-
Just looked behind the couch, not picks there. By the way, getting rid of your best players is counter productive. Unless we don't think we have bottomed out yet.
-
Maybe we should tank... oh wait... nevermind

Spot on. Now we see the folly of our ways.
