Title: SITE NEWS: OER MIGRATING TO A NEW HOST
Post by: one-eyed on December 11, 2010, 07:38:54 AM
Due to well known and lingering issues with OER's current web host provider, we are finally moving the site and forum to a new host based in Australia. We just couldn't continue with the "service" from our current host which is based overseas.

During the 'move' OER may be offline for a period of time as the site's files and forum database are migrated to our new host's server. So please bear with us while the move is happening and any initial teething probs that may arise when its all done (hopefully there will be none).

Cheers,

   MT and WP.

Best news I've heard in a while.  The old site was just too unreliable.   :clapping

One ignorant question guys - who funds the hosting and running costs?

It hasn't moved yet smokey - will happen over the next few days. We are confident that there will be a marked improvement and less dowtime. We are also pleased to be able to use an Aussie Company now rather s meone off shore

Excellent news WP OE & MT!  :thumbsup

Check to see if they have a community chest or paypal mod as I'd be happy to chip in a few bucks towards the running of the site and I'm sure others would too. Even if it allows us to have some more cool mods that everyone can enjoy. I know some sites have a really cool "gallery" mod which we could post training & game day pics as well as other tiger related pics taken by members. I've run plenty of forums in the past so if you want any ideas just PM me.  :thumbsup

Great news OE, MT and WP! :thumbsup

Any chance with the move that in the future you could nominate good posts for a post of the month or something similar like I have seen on some other 'inferior sites'  :whistle I wouldn't have the first clue how difficult this is to create but a type of recognition for genuinely humourous, informative or insightful posts (MT's training posts and OE's breaking stories come straight to mind) is the only thing I see other sites having that we don't here. Considering this is the best Tigers forum around I was just curious if such additions are a possibility or just a pipe dream on my behalf :sleep

Either way, thanks for all your work and efforts with the site and great to hear of the change.  :clapping

These SMF forums do come with a 'karma' rating for posters but it's switched off. Also Version 2.0 of these SMF forums is not far away from being publicly released and it comes with more features (eg: a ignore list which some have been asking for  :D ).

Thanks all for the kind words by the way  :)

In short poor service from what we were promised plus in the past 4 months our soon to be old host moved the goal posts from an existing contract we had. The only webhosting company I know who installs new servers that offer less capacity and more restrictions than their old servers  ???  ::). Oh what fun WP and I had "discussing" all these issues with our old host  ;D.

Anyway the migration to our new host is about to happen so if OER goes offline then you'll all know why.

Cheers  :).

Thought that I has something wrong with my computer.
But it turns out that this all has changed.
Oh well at least it is back.
Must admit that I liked the old look better than this one.
Had more look of a Tigers forum than this format.
I will get use to it.

We will get around to getting things looking like they did previously over the next few days.

Bare with us

The migration took longer than we thought due to the lack of assitance provided by our former hosts who for some reason we cannot understand were not impressed with us deciding to give them the flick

On top of that we had some issues with getting the forum back up and running (Mr One-Eyed deserves a massive thank you for getting it up and running again  :thumbsup)

Hence why we currently look different colour wise in particular

Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding

There still maybe some teething issues over the coming days but long term we are confident this site will operate alot better than it did previously

We are BACK

Enjoy

Phew!  ;D

Apologies for the length downtime while we migrated but, as WP alluded to, our former hosts did their best to hinder the whole progress at every step  :scream. Despite claiming in their terms and conditions that there was a 15-day grace period regarding domain renewals they instead just turned off our domain name Sunday night which put us offline and prevented us from being able to change the Domain NameServer (tells the internet which server/IP address a website is located at) to that of our new host. Our old host also refused to reply to any contact or requests from our new host and even blocked our new host from FTP access. Add to that the 'export' function in phpmyadmin for large files/databases such as the one which supports this forum wouldn't work properly surprise surprise  ::). Fortunately I had backed up the site and knew enough unix to get around it all and our new host was very helpful all the way through regarding migrating everything and putting it all back together the right way.

In short without the technical computer jargon, our former hosts were their normal moronic mongrel selves who turned something that should have taken 2 days tops into a 4-5 day saga  ::). Oh well they once again justified our decision to change hosts despite the lengthy downtime and on the positive I learnt a fair bit about migrating websites and databases and unless I'm mistaken the site now seems to be responding faster  :thumbsup. Hopefully it's all go from here.

I'll tidy up the couple of minor superficial things left to do in the next 24 hours. If you find or experience any bugs let me or WP know.

Thanks everybody for your patience over the past 5 days and on behalf of WP and MT thanks for all your continued support and kind words :cheers.

Simple Machines is the forum software not the hosts

But certainly "simpletons" whould have been a great name for our previous hosts  ;D

And yes things are faster, which is one of the things we wanted as part of the change over  :thumbsup

Huge improvement in speed guys.  And if the site uptime is now more reliable then the move will have been a huge success.  Even got some new icons I notice.   The only downside was me spending the last few days shaking like an addict going through withdrawal symptoms!!   ;D

I imagine those internal server configuration errors that i would sometimes get are gone too.

Sorry Infamy but V2.0 is still in its beta stage (5th beta IIRC) and I have no idea when it'll be publicly released. SMF has been working on it for ages. There is an ignore box on your profile page for PMs with the current version btw but I don't believe it includes posts on the forum as well.

I had to wait until my monthly internet quota clicked over to a new one so I should be able to work on it again this weekend. Getting the colour scheme right is also a challenge as there's far more code in the new version to wade through to know what does what. So bear with us. I can only give a Michaelangelo reply at this stage.
