WP, it was mentioned a couple of days ago in the local Shepp media (from BF):
"Just announced on local news that the Hawks will play the Tigers at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton in a night game on Friday 4/3/11"

have they confirmed live vision yet? ::)
-
Whats with the eye roll?

::)
-
No GWS :thumbsup. Can only hope we get the same coverage as last night. :clapping
-
If anything, the quality would be slightly less choppy. I'd imagine that the 3G wireless coverage would be better in Shepparton than it would in Alice Springs.

Arrhhhhh smokey, checked out the Western Ring Road these days with all its roadworks.
On Friday when we were coming home from Bright at around 3.00pm the Western Ring Greensborough bound was crawling and in places not moving
So yep would need to allow 3 hours :thumbsup

Just to make it clear I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with it being played in country towns, actually think it is a great idea I enjoy the trips.
But I reckon the timing of it; a 7.00pm start is terrible and that's the issue I have
Playing in the country towns is actually great for the regions as well especially when we city folks make the trip ;). Look at last year when we played Geelong for the Black Saturday charity game - the pubs and their bistros did a rawing trade :thumbsup
-
Agree WP, 7pm is a disgrace
I'm going to have to leave work at 10am to get there by then :banghead

Pretty sure there was a note you could get in at the Alice last week with a membership card so hopefully it carries on for those attending.

As I said before, I will be there :) 50 min drive after work. That said I do know how you Melb guys feel trying to get there. I know what its like as its almost impossible for me to get to most games during the year.
I would hope they play a pretty near full strength side as you never know we could be drawn to play GWS next week (the last week of practice mathces) and that wouldnt be much of a lead up game for the full team. Lets blow all the cobwebs out when we have the chance.

Does anyone know if a local radio station is covering the game like last week as well as the RFC site?

We could be having a practice match without any goalposts lol.
Goalpost short fall
Shepparton News
Deakin Reserve is without one vital piece of equipment – goalposts – for Friday night’s AFL preseason match between Hawthorn and Richmond.
A factory accident damaged new aluminium posts scheduled to arrive at the football ground last week.
Greater Shepparton City Council recreation and parks manager Brendan Gosstray said everything else was ready for the 7 pm match.
‘‘The ground’s looking a treat and ticket sales, although slow, are going okay,’’ Mr Gosstray said yesterday.
‘‘I think Shepparton has a history of crowds attending on the night rather than pre-booking.
‘‘I’m just sweating on getting the goalposts in and then we’re right.’’
Mr Gosstray said no special parking arrangements were necessary for the match.
‘‘The street layout works pretty well for (Deakin hosting) major events,’’ Mr Gosstray said.
‘‘We find traffic’s regulated pretty well if we let people find their own carpark and exit, rather than cordoning off (roads) and bottlenecking traffic.’’
Mr Gosstray said 6000 people would be an ideal crowd on Friday.
Collingwood and Hawthorn played in front of about 9500 people at Deakin Reserve in a 2008 AFL preseason match.
‘‘I don’t think there’s a crowd sector there without Collingwood,’’ Mr Gosstray said.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for concession.
Children under-15 and AFL, Hawthorn or Richmond members can enter for no charge.
Tickets are available at the council’s Welsford St building or Deakin Reserve.
Gates open from 5 pm on Friday.

They've found some goalposts lol ...
Primed for first bounce
Shepparton News
Friday, 4th March 2011
All is in readiness for tonight’s NAB Challenge match at Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve now that Greater Shepparton City Council’s goalpost drama is over.
Richmond and Hawthorn will continue their pre-season preparations ahead of this month’s official round-one start.
Kyabram’s Brett Deledio, Echuca’s Daniel Connors and Mansfield’s Andrew Browne will be in action for the Tigers, while Echuca-raised teenager Jordan Williams will play for the Hawks.
Richmond met St Kilda in a practice match at Deakin Reserve in 2009, while Essendon played an intra-club game at the venue last year.
There was some concern for council officers last week when a factory accident damaged new aluminium goalposts scheduled to arrive in time for tonight’s contest.
The council’s recreation and parks manager Brendan Gosstray yesterday said the goalposts arrived safely this week.
‘‘The last time I checked they were there, so I hope no-one steals them,’’ Gosstray said.
‘‘That got us sweating a bit because timing is everything. We put the footings down months ago, but the goalposts are there now so we’re happy.
‘‘Ticket sales are going very well and have really kicked along, so that’s good to see and the AFL inspected the ground today and gave it the all-clear.’’
Gosstray said council officers were anticipating a crowd of about 6000.
‘‘I reckon we’re still around that mark and would be rapt if it’s higher, but the crowd-pulling power of a Collingwood is worth another 30 or 40 per cent,’’ he said.
‘‘It gives people a chance in their own town to get down and see AFL at a local level and get closer to the players.
‘‘You don’t get that at an AFL match. There will be restrictions (on where the crowd can go) because we’re pretty much controlled by the AFL on access to the arena.’’
Gosstray, a Carlton fan, said players from both teams were making the trip to Shepparton today in separate cars rather than team buses.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for concession-card holders.
Children under-15 and AFL, Hawthorn and Richmond members gain free entry.
Tickets are available at the council’s Welsford St building or at Deakin Reserve.
Gates open from 5 pm and the match starts at 7 pm.
ONE FM 98.5 is broadcasting at the game from 6.30 pm.

18 scoring shots to 7 isn't good enough. just to easy inside our defensive half and not enough scoring opportunities!
-
First 10 minutes of that qtr was good and we should have hit the front but after the Hawks got those two quick goals midway through it was one-way traffic. Too many passengers by the look and sound of it. Lucky if we have half-a-dozen good players - Grigg, Cotch and ???

Houli yes but the other two no.

Should be winning this game, not sure whats happening with the Tigers this week.
Any team that plays a zone wil destroy us this year, just cant move the ball out of defense cleanly.
Dont rate the Hawks, they are pretenders. Doesnt say much for us

Ball run out by the Tigers, short kicks ends up on the wing
From the ball up, Jackson runs off, bounces inside 50, Cheney collects, kicks on the right, intercepted by McGuane
He goes short to Miller, he cant get the ball, theres a free against the Tiges and Mitchell takes it ouside 50
::)
-
Osbourne can join an elite group of players which include Corey Jones, Leigh Harding, Medhurst, Dunn, Kosi, Petrie and every other part time hack.
This is the exact reason why i think it wont matter if Judd plays round 1. If we cant contain the "hacks" then forget it we will get pumped.
Scratch match it may be but if we let these lesser knowns score multiples we aint going to win many matches
-
Martin collects the ball, one of his few possesions tonight
Short to Cotchin, he cant mark, the ball is in contention now, and we end with a ball up
Sums up out night. Missing targets :banghead
Ball up - Tuck collects and runs away. Nahas takes on a tackler but cant get through, ball deflected and the Tigers run the ball out
Houli chases onto the ball only for Cheney to take him on
Runs out of defence, hits Franklin on the lead at 50. He chips to Reneouf, not agreat kick and.....The Hawks get a free kick somehow
Goal to Hawks

Hawks force it back to the boundrary line, Ladson stops and props and the Tiges get the ball back to Nahas

19 minutes gone 3rd term
Vickery, Grigg, Foley and Martin in the middle at this bounce
Cotchin gets the ball out wide, he chips to Martin. He goes bang inside 50
Vickery goes up, Nahas at the ground Hawks now run out of defence
Jackson meets Sheels heavily but he gets up
Astbury now at CHB and holding down the position
Tiges get a free kick over on the far wing [Must be a miracle we got a free]
Matty White gets the ball back from Miller on the far pocket, he snaps at goal and misses ::)

Poor defending allows the Hawks a shot from 30m out but it's a miss.

Houli gets the ball in the 2nd quarter run out of defence
He boots it long into the forward line, Grigg runs onto it. He swings onto his left and spots up Brad Miller
25m out, no real angle
Goal, he pops it throuhg :gotigers

Bounce down now, Foley back in the middle
3/4 time
Rich 2.1 4.3 6.5-41
Haw 3.5 8.10 10.13-73
Goals: Cotchin, Morton, Vickery, Graham, Nahas, Miller
-
Picked up in the last 10 mins but you've got to wonder if the Hawks switched off once they got to 8 goals up.
-
Martin, Houli, Grigg getting amongst it in the 3rd
Dusty needed to lift as he was quiet in the first half.
-
ball moves quickly into the forward line and it ends up with a shot on goal, but no score
Astbury looking solid in this second half in defence
A succession of sweeping handballs by the Tigers and the ball ends up on the far wing with a free kick
Houli chips it up forward which ends up with Vickery, the goal kicker from last week
Hawks really pushed forward and left the Tiges with a 2 on 1 in defence
Vicks kicks it :gotigers

A snap out of the back from the Hawks means the difference is now 27 points

Great tackle by Matty White in the Hawks 5o, great pressure e gets a free kick
Now the Tiges get a 50m free kick
White chips to Miller in the heart of the square. he goes long
Lyle grabs the mark sadly
-
Get orf Miller! >:(
-
Tiges now run out of defence
Connors kicks to Morton
morton goes to centre wing, Hawks now get it back and the ball ends up off a set of hands, ball up. 35m out in Hawks forward pocket
Tigers quickly get a kick out of the pack
lands in the hands of Lyle, he goes short to Roughead and he takes the mark. 30m out with a slight angle. Miss

Cotchin takes a nice mark, hands to Nahas and he kicks it out on the full ::)
hawks get it back, go in board, and they now kick out of bounds
Sloppy skills here from both side

Houli walks off a little gingerly :-\

hows Griggs kicking been tonight?
personally will let us down.

Skills again let the Tiges down coming outside of 50 :banghead and it ends up with Whitecross

Don't worry Grigg won't be the only one......goal to Roughead..Hawks by 34.
-
From the bounce, ball gets kicked forward, ends up in the hands of Miller, he snaps and it ends up out of bounds ::)
-
Get orf Miller :-X
-
Where is my little friend Edwards.. :lol
-
Foley and Houli both went long inside 50 but both times cleared by Hawthorn
Foley in the centre, goes long, and it ends up with Ty Vickery. Great mark!
40m out on a 45 degree angle. He goes back...walks in....for his 3rd goal....doesnt make the distance and punched out of bounds :P
Sheesh we do the basic things shockingly at times.
-
Where is my little friend Edwards.. :lol
Not playing. We have enough players out there not hitting targets ;)

Wow, Trent Cotchin! 360 spin and speeds out of defence
Cotch has probably been our best tonight.
He gives to Houli goes long, Vickery cant mark, nahas at the ground, comes out to Suckling. He kicks straight to Grigg, he goes to the top of the 50 to Miller. He squares it up to Morton. Miss :P

Oh well, no injuries I suppose. Gee how good was Cotchin then.
Farmer and Houli have hobbled off tonight.
Lids played in the first half rogerd3. Didn't have much of an impact.
Point to Roughead.
Tiges now go short. Over the top and theyve turned it over in the forward line of the hawks, not good. Another point.

all i ever hear is 'richmond turn it over'
but seeing foley's name alot tonight is a good sign!

29 scoring shots to 13, not good at all, practice match or not

Final Score
Richmond 2.1 4.3 6.5 7.6-48
Hawthorn 3.5 8.10 10.13 12.17-89
Goals: Vickery 2, Cotchin, Morton, Graham, Nahas, Miller
-
not good but entirely predictable given our list
its another development year
-
41 point loss
Richmond 7.6 (48)
Hawthorn 12.17 (89)
13 scoring shots to 29 is pathetic.
we had at least four or five shots at goal that either did not make the distance or was kick out on the full. when are we going to get players who can kick goals?
Vickery took some contested marks which will do his confidence well.
Grigg seemed to get a lot of the football.
-
Why is Nahas still in this team. Miller :banghead :banghead Fair dinkun one handed marks is laughable at this level.
All this highlights is that without Richo i mean Jack we are stuffed.

Just got back from the game! The greatest pity is we had a chance to boost membership tonight in front of a healthy largely pro tiger crowd and we played terribly!
Negatives
Nahas= gone
Houli= a couple of scared efforts tonight ( short steps, not backing into packs but acting like he got called out)
Martin's first half imo
Gus's dropped marks
Looked like little boys
Clearances especially from the centre, i lost count of the times we tapped it straight to Mitchell
Where did the centre corridor go?
Positives
Cotchin
Martins second half
Lids went off but the damage didnt appear to escalate too much
I thought Rance did a reasonable job on Roughy

Cheers GR12. Lids seemed to just be happy with getting a first run under his belt playing for a half.
We lose the centre corridor because we move the ball too slowly and are too static. Same goes trying and failing to get the ball outside our defensive 50. We stop and prop between possessions and allow the opposition to set and reset their zone press. You need to instead take possession and dispose the ball in almost one movement quickly and have teammates running hard into space with purpose or running to create space for another teammate to run into before the zone is fully set.
Btw for those that went how was Ty's game? He kicked 2 goals but did he back up last week's effort and lead and present hard at the ball?

Why we keep playing Nahas I have no idea.

I actually agree with Brackets. Its not necessarily the result its how we are going about it. At the moment any team that puts up a half decent zone has us covered and thats a concern IMHO.

you look at the good teams. Davey, Jetta, Krak now, and who do we have. Nahas. Mr fantasy island himself. With him and Nason in the side expect another season of our players getting thrown to the ground.
Its an absolute joke we keep playing him. I would rather have taken a punt on Krakouer for a rookie spot, than keep playing this dud.

The problem is that we still don't spread from contests properly and get into space!!
We're always trying to pinpoint a target and not kick to a guy 20m in the clear.
As much as I hate to say it, the Bumbers are doing this very well at the moment.... :'(

I thought TV went quite well! Same old story for our forwards, he was down there alot as a lone target but by the time we moved the ball to him the numbers had got back. He took some strong marks! Kicked two goals, from memory, and maybe had five shots on goal.
What impressed me about TV was his work below his knees, he was quite agile and sharp!
The ruck strategy concerns me! They both seem to leap early and by the time the ball has reached their hands they have returned to the ground, therefore losing any height advantage!
-

Agree Dan the Man.
Nahas - mr gilligans island. Gilligan himself. A bumbling, weedy hack.
We should have delisted him and used our extra 2nd round pick. Either that or traded him to freo for a dog kennel.
Nason will be ok, at least he has skills. Needs more time in the gym though.

Ok I was there too and thought we were terrible. Agree with most of what Go Rich12 said but will add a few of my own.
Nahas, why dont he even try to stay on his feet ? His standard move seems to be tap the ball and slide and hope to be first up. Well if dont work 90% off the time and its easy pickings for opponents.
Our backline looked so small comparied to Roughead ,Franklin and the resting ruckman down there. Seeing lots of teams are going to rest a ruckman down foward this year we are going to need other options apart from the normal guys. That said I really like Ashbury, he will be our general down there for years to come I hope.
Our disposal is terrible, so many butchers out there you would think its some sort of convention.
Miller is not the answer thats for sure, he waved his arms around alot and pointed but not much else. Maybe is is being used as on feild coach for these games, who knows.
Our ruckmen just dont seem to know when to jump, that includes when going for a mark. Their timing is awful.
We seemed to try some sort of weird tactic of putting on play back in foward line on there own in the last quater to try and break up the zone, but it had no effect just ment that they had 18 in the zone and we had 17 to try and break it. They rotated the players used (bigs and smalls) but the hawks took no notice and just kept the pressing zone and kept the presure on.
Likes
Cotch was great, he sure goes in hard and I love that. Classy act
Ashbury (as I said above)
Griggs did some good things
They seemed to be trying to do what ever the instructions were with lots of talking and pointing. Thats a positive becasue it means Harwick has them playing for him.
Realy Bad
Nahas
Jackson and Tuck are the same old turn over merchants even though they go in hard. They were no alone though
I am sure I will find more to say once I read all this and have time to realy think about it.
One thing I will say is that I will bring up the old arguemnet about passing judgement on things just from seeing a game on TV. Although there are a few things you do miss by not being there (like that deep foward line player tatic) there are lots you just cant see at the ground (other side, other end, in close stuff). To be honest I find the TV few of things a much better way to make judgments but I know many will disagree.
-
Fair summary Fluffy! I raced home, posted and then put my twin boys, who came with me, to bed! Thats why it was brief! I wish we had the chance to but a footy record at the game too! Its nice to look up the player's names and numbers! As far as venues go, Lavington is all over Shepp too imo!
-

Have to agree GR12 - I reckon the Lavington sports oval is a ripper to view a game (the sports club isn't bad either ;D). Went to Deacon when the Tigers player the Bulldogs there years ago and you struggled to see what was happening on the other side of the ground as there isn't any form of terracing
Pity we weren't playing in Lavington tonight or today would have been up there in a flash :thumbsup
Actually I am going ot be up that way next weekend for a family thingee.... ;D

I went to the game too but saw Nahas a little differently to some. I agree he goes to ground way to much but what i will say from last nights game is that he was front and centre more than any other small/medium forward we had. He gets to the rights spots, gets his hands on the footy but lets himself down with trying to do to much or misses those goals that's small forwards are suppose to kick, i can see why the coaches go with him though.
TV was very impressive in my eyes, he lead well, took some good clunks and just looked like when he went for the footy, he was every chance of getting it. They say a weeks a long time in footy but in 1 week i have seen enough in TV to say he should be there come round 1.
Cotch and Martin were good (even Martins first half i thought was good)
Batchalar was good too and uses the ball well when gets it.
For me the biggest thing to come out of last nights game was that if we are to get anywhere in the not to distant future we need to replace(a nice way of saying get rid of) Jackson and Tuck. Footy has changed enough in the last few years to tell us that as a side you can carry a couple of 'not so god kicks' but what you cannot carry are really bad dispossess of the footy, and Jackson is one of those. Footy at this level is about taking the opportunity's when they come along, kicking the goal when in front, hitting a target when you have the run of the footy and so on. Not only do you put yourself in the game when you put scoreboard pressure on, everything changes, your confidence in yourself, your team mates and the side itself. You just cannot afford to have people that 'break the chain', as Jackson is most definitely one of those in my eyes. He has been a good hard player for us but he has had enough time to improve his disposal and has come up way short. I would rather see his spot taken by a young guy that has a chance to improve us as a side.
Harsh i know for pre season games but sometimes hard, not to nice decision's need to be made on players that hold our club back!
Tuck IMO is in the same boat, maybe not the same butcher as Jackson but in the same ball park.
After watching last night game, and yes i know it's only a practice game BUT we are a fair way off it! And for those who think we can flick a switch come round 1 are living fairyland.

I think we are atleast 3-4 years from top 4. We don't have a settled defence and the forwards need time too. By then hopefuly nanass is a fringe dweller at reserves level and we have a YOUNG gun forward crumbing future midfielder eating the crumbs left by Griffiths and Riewoldt.
We are still atleast 3 years away people
Look at the positives.
.....and bag the players that are a waste of time!!!

Bright, Beechworth, Kiewa Valley. Mt Beauty loves those particular areas smokey
As for Albury Ma Powell's family came/come from up there and surrounding districts so I know those parts pretty well. But I am not a great lover of the city of Albury though :)
Bents you are spot on! Albury is a bit of s h i t hole! Wodonga not much better! I work there and love working there though, if that makes sense!?

Ah good old Tallangatta- the town that moved! I actually went to school up in Corryong! Nice area! There is a Thai restaurant down the end of Dean street near Country Comfort if looking for a place!
Yeah the town that moved :thumbsup
MA Powell was from Granya but was born in Tallangatta

I went to the game too but saw Nahas a little differently to some. I agree he goes to ground way to much but what i will say from last nights game is that he was front and centre more than any other small/medium forward we had. He gets to the rights spots, gets his hands on the footy but lets himself down with trying to do to much or misses those goals that's small forwards are suppose to kick, i can see why the coaches go with him though.
That's very understanding but if we are going to succeed Nahas needs to be in that large paragraph further down in your post about Jackson and Tuck. If Nahas hasn't fixed his problems by now you've got to wonder if he's every going to change. Spend time on a kid instead while it's easy to do so.

If you believed the media Cyril had the ball on a string ::). That dance around Houli was impressive though. Similar moves to that goal he kicked against Essendon once.
Good to see Conca up there in the ranking at half-time. Shows he can find the pill. Obviously as a first year player he got tired and fell away so he needs to work on his fitness before 6 disposals in a first qtr becomes 20-25 over a whole game. The top tier of our midfield is coming together nicely. Add some quality depth to the class at the top and in a few years time we'll develop one of the best midfields in the comp. At the moment our outside game is still ordinary compared to the strength and ballwinning ability inside. We still get killed on the opposition spread as we can't match and beat their workrate.

Interesting, it may be worth swapping Astbury for Rance if he keeps the form up against Adelaide
