Post by: one-eyed on August 09, 2011, 03:31:43 PM
The bookies have us a clear underdogs again not surprisingly but does anyone here give us a chance given we beat the Swans at the 'G this time last year?

Richmond    $3.30
Sydney       $1.30

It means that that little bit extra to the swans given last weeks result and their run home for finals.
We have a good chance, but the swans will be hungry from the start.

AFL site has us getting done by 7 goals  :-\.

SUMMARY
Richmond's losing run reached six games on Sunday, when it suffered a 57-point defeat to West Coast in Perth. After a reasonably positive start to the season, with four wins and a draw from their opening nine games, the Tigers have won only once since. Their last victory came against the Brisbane Lions on June 18, dropping them to 14th on the ladder. Despite that, coach Damien Hardwick had this to say after the loss to the Eagles.

"The one thing I'll say about our guys is their morale is very, very good," he said. "They're a great group. They keep bouncing back and they know we're moving forward.

"The win-loss column might not say that, but there are a number of other factors we look at that are going in the right direction.

"We've just got to wait for our group to mature and get bigger bodies and go forward from there."

Taking on the Sydney Swans is not the ideal task when you're waiting for your players' bodies to mature. Renowned for their toughness and physicality, the Swans will be confident of re-igniting their finals push against Richmond. They have lost five of their past seven games to sit precariously in seventh place, level on points with eighth-placed Essendon and just two points above Fremantle. Coming off a one-point loss to the Bombers, the Swans will be fired up to claim four points in just their second trip to the MCG this season.

QUESTION MARKS
Will Richmond finally put together a four-quarter performance to snap its losing streak? The Tigers have been competitive in games, including against West Coast last weekend, but lapses in concentration and effort resulted in heavy defeats.

How will the Swans respond to their loss to Essendon? In one of the games of the season, the Swans led by two goals with four minutes remaining, but allowed the Bombers to storm home and place the Swans' top-eight place in jeopardy. Has their confidence taken a hit or will they be driven to redemption?

PREDICTION
Sydney Swans by 42 points

No need to be scared WAT. Who cares what the Swans think or how they are planning - wont make one iota of difference or it shouldn't

It's just another game

I will go, watch and not get upset or worked up in any way and just have a good day at the footy. Been doing it for the last 6 or so weeks and it's working a treat  :thumbsup

The Swans are already finding it hard to get up for this game so have resorted to calling it a finals game.

They'll come out flat as a tack, Grigg will destroy Goodes, Rance will cane Sam Reid and Riewoldt and Vickery will combine for 13 goals.

In-Post, Webberley
Out-Mcguane, Farmer

That's about it I think  8)

Would love to see Post at CHB really hitting some form over the last 4 games. Will give us alot to look forward to with Rance looking the goods at FB and Grimes and Astbury back next season. 2 of Thursfield, Mcguane, Gourdis and Moore will go. Thursfield has been pretty good after his shocker return game against Carlton. I've always liked him as a 3rd tall and he's probably ahead of the other 3 to keep his spot after his great job on LeCras. I'd prefer to see Gourdis and Moore delisted of the 4. Moore has dodgy hips and is 28 at the start of next season.

Sportal unlike others in the media reckon it'll be a close game....

WE THINK:
After losing in heartbreaking fashion last weekend, Sydney need to beat Richmond if they are to keep their finals aspirations on track. The Swans simply cannot afford to drop this one, even at the MCG, a ground the Tigers play their best football at.

Richmond's season has spiralled out of control and morale is as low as it has been at Punt Road in 2011. At one stage, they were on the cusp of the eight, but this run of losses shows exactly how far they remain from being a bonafide finals contender.

Sydney have been just that in seven of the past eight seasons and should build on that fine record, provided they win this one. Central to getting a win here will be the contribution of skipper Adam Goodes and rising young big man Sam Reid. Reid looks a player in the making and is likely to get either Alex Rance or Luke McGuane as his match-up, something that should suit John Longmire's men.

Richmond's best chance of causing an upset will rest on the shoulders of Jack Riewoldt, who found some form against the Eagles, and is vying for a second successive Coleman Medal.

Sydney never win by big margins, so look for this to be a tight one.

Swans by 11 points.

Our defence looks so much better without McGuane, in fact today it was our strength which is quite unusual. Thought Rance had a great game and Dea certainly didnt look out of place. Also thought Batch was also very good until injured and played a good linking role. Overall whilst we know there is a lot to do there are some good signs across all the defensive players which today made life that much easier for our midfield and then our attack. When we get some of the troops back next season it should give us some depth for a change.  :clapping :clapping

Beating Sydney and 1 of Demons, Crow and Kangas (ideally 2) gives me the confidence we are heading in the right direction and gives evidence that when we get that transition game going from half back we look ok.  A massive step forward today, real shame Batch went down because he looked good again today.

As good as Rance was today he needs to curtail his kamikaze style of defence. Busts too many packs open and takes out team mates, while creating the sort of dangerous spillage that opposition forwards would love. Needs to get better at killing the ball with a punch.

Our defence looks so much better when we win the midfield, that's the reality of it, regardless of who's playing down back.
Title: Re: Tigers vs Swans game thread
Post by: Stripes on August 14, 2011, 09:14:43 PM
Rance was the best player on the ground imho closely followed by Cotchin. Rance will be our FB for the next decade if todays performance is anything to go by and with Dea and Batchelor showing plenty, our backline is starting to shape up. Throw Grimes into the mix and our backline is beginning to come together. Thursfield also had a day out and with Houli and Lids providing poise, experience and ball movement, players such as McGuane, Moore, Farmer and even Newman may struggle to find a spot in the B50 very soon.

After our rucks, our midfield suddenly seems an area of concern for me. Tuck was fantastic at winning the ball today and when he was able to handball the ball to a better ball user (ie Cotch) he was a tremendous asset. When he was forced to despose of the ball quickly himself, his weaknesses were exposed but there is no doubt that our midfield was better with him in it today.

with a lot of those kicks you refer to, most other blokes in the side wouldn't get boot to ball in that circumstance...if they even had the ball in the first place.

You may be right with some but there was plenty of other occasions when in the hands of a better ball user, say any of our other midfielders, they would not have made those same mistakes and/or turned it over. It is the conundrum that is our Tucky.

It's no coincidence that since Tucky returned our overall performance has improved.  Same with Miller.  Many bag him out but since his return we have shown a lot more function and purpose in the forward line - I'll use the term "structure" even though some don't like it!

Would like to see Post given CHB for the remainder of the year, and a decent chunk of next year too. I think we may have been playing Azzleberry in the wrong spot. could be more a CHF/2nd/3rd fwd tall.

Just got home and very happy. Not only did the boys play an exciting brand of footy and do this for four quarters but my young bloke scored a signed football from Griggy after the game! Thanks Tigers!

Good win. Outstanding game from Houli. Rance, Tuck, Cotchin, Jack and Lids were very good. Nahas, Vickery and King were good up forward

Stoked with the win.  Saw some damn fine displays of tenacious tackling and pressure.  Saw some epic endurance efforts.  Saw a very solid team effort.

And he is a candy man.

To think some people called him Tiven-Houli when we drafted him.

Bloody loved today, I was at the game and I would love to know if something different happened pre-match because the lads came on the ground and then ran down to the goal square with a real purpose, lots of blokes sprinting around and generally looking up and about.

The only difference I can think of is the Captain...

To think some people called him Tiven-Houli when we drafted him.

How nice of the little loves to put in last week.
Big hugs and kisses to them all.......

If they win the last 3 they can get stuffed too.
