Tuck was the player the age picked to list in their 5 players of the round poll.  Cotchin is great but only 10 wins .  Has anyone done a breakdown, game by game?

What's wins got to do with it seriously?

GC have only won 3 games but Ablett Jnr will poll votes without any problems

He will still poll well, correct. I reckon though, had GC won closer to 11 games, then Ablett would be a dead set certainty, hence people placing the emphasis on our wins  ;)

Cotchin should be fine, last years voting showed the umpires take notice of him.  :thumbsup :pray

In my free time  :o I've had a look at the first 11 rounds based on disposals and the all important/relevant AFL Dream Team Points  ;D

Round                    Cotchin                          Competing Players                        Stripes Prediction

1 - Carlton          27 Disposals (120 DT)                Murphy (116), Judd (93)                                      1 Vote/ 1 Vote

2 - Collingwood    26 Disposals (88 DT Points)      Lids 35 (140), Rance 34 (138), Swan 32 (116)       0 Vote/ 1 Vote

3 - Melbourne      22 (110)                Tuck 30 (146), Grigg 37 (142), Conca 29 (134) Lids 27 (111)   3 Vote/ 4 Votes

4 - Geelong         24 (105)                  Selwood 27 (130), Taylor 29 (115), Tuck 27 (113), Bartel (108) 0 Vote/ 4 Votes

5 - West Coast     29 (110)                                 Foley 27 (109), Lids 26 (101)                                2 Votes / 6 Votes

6 - Port               18 (67)                     Lids 24 (107), Maric 20 (124), Tuck 28 (102)                       0 Votes/ 6 Votes

7 - Sydney          27 (96)                    Grigg 25 (114), Lids 25 (104),  Maric 17 (102)                       1 Vote/ 7 Votes

8 - Essendon       29 (143)                   Lids 35 (160), Watson 30 (134), Stanton 29 (124)                3 Votes/ 10 Votes

9 - Hawks           31(113)   Tuck 35 (152), Lids 32 (141), Jack 16(135), Foley 27(125), Maric 18 (122) 2 Votes/12 Votes

10 - Saints          29 (97)                  Jack 20 (147),  Maric 20(116), Lids 29 (102)                             1 Vote/ 13 Votes

11 - Fremantle             30 (112)               de Boer 29 (147), Tuck 29(124), Pavlich 17 (107)                1 Vote/ 14 Votes

Now statistic are rarely a reliable guide for the Charlie but I have Cotch on 14 Votes by round 11.Swan won with 34 votes last year  :-\   Lids, Maric and Jack would have pinched a few away from him but, even though he has consistent superior numbers, Tuck is unlikely to poll to high.

Unless someone else wants to have a crack at it, I'll try and do the last half of the season later.

Cheers  :cheers

Round                    Cotchin                          Competing Players                        Stripes Prediction

12 - GWS          25 Disposals (87 DT)            Lids 30 (108), Tuck 34 (106), Maric 16(113)           2 Vote/ 16 Votes

14 - Adelaide    25 Disposals (111 DT Points) Thompson 32 (128), Maric 17(122), Lids 29 (115)       2 Vote/ 18 Votes

15 - Melbourne      28 (106)                 Grigg 35 (123), Tuck 35 (117) Lids 23 (105)                    3 Votes/ 21 Votes

16 - Gold Coast         38 (137)          Lids 36(141) Ablett 33 (128), Jack 16(112)                          3 Vote/ 24 Votes

17 - Nth Melb     24 (101)                       Petrie 13(128), Anthony 26(113), Havey 24 (106)          0 Votes / 24 Votes

18 - Carlton       24 (114)                     Murphy 33(113), McLean 27 (120),                                 2 Votes/ 26 Votes

19 - Lions          21 (103)                    Lids 25 (126), Grigg 26 (115),  Maric 16 (121)                       1 Vote/ 27 Votes

20 - Western Bulldogs   35 (152)         Lids 31 (121), Grigg 27 (122), Jack 20 (116)                       3 Votes/ 30 Votes

21 - Fremantle           32(101)     Mundy 32 (130), Duffield 25 (113), Ballantyne 24(105),               0 Votes/30 Votes

22 - Essendon          31 (145)            Lids 33 (117),  Martin 25(119), Tuck 33 (131)                         3 Votes/ 33 Votes

23 - Port Power            ????                              ?????                                                ? Vote/ 33-36 Votes

I tried to be as conservative as possible. At the very least Cotch will be in the place getters. The two factors going against Cotch is our loses and lids taking votes off him. Other than these two I'm starting to feel more confident.  :pray :cheers

Guys,

Here is the logic (and thanks to Stripes because it is there for all to see from a stats perspective) but he has the raw numbers in possessions to be prominent as a mid

Cotch is the stand out player in our side (think Crawford in 1999)
Cotch polls well - 16 votes last year
Cotch is playing in a team that will poll in most games this year - we have won 10 - 11 games and been up to our neck in pretty much every other game
We have had 6 games with wins more than 6 goals which pretty much guarantees us the 1,2,3 in each of those games
Cotch is in the top 5 in the comp for avg frees for - umps love chimp.

The danger is Sam Mitchell.
Abletts side was obliterated in too many games
Swans missed too many games
Beams is an unknown quantity
Jibes team has been uncompetitive for 10 weeks.

brief discussion on SEN about potentials for the brownlow, Harf made a good point about Dayne Beams
Has had a ripper of a season in a "winning"team 15 games so far and has kicked plenty of goals.
Reckons both Chimp and Jobe will miss out due to win/loss ratio which is not really fair however thats how they roll  ::)

I don't believe Cotch will poll 3 votes in every game by any stretch but most of our games have been close (as yeloowandblack said) and he has typically been the standout player on the field so you would expect that he polls 1 or 2 at least for each of these games. The really close affair such as the GC, Carlton and Essendon games he was clearly the best afield even though we lost - these will be the interesting votes for mine.

I think he has a real chance of coming home like a storm and over taking Watson.  :thumbsup

By my reckoning he will poll between 16 and 19 votes at the most.

Deledio, Grigg and Co will also attract some votes to.

The BOG stats gets you noticed - but there is one important factor that everyone seems to forget every year - that is the Umpires!

3 Umpires per game, 8 games per round, so many different interpretations, who in the wide wide world of sport knows what these attention seeking, power hungry little men will do with their votes.

By this criteria - I think that there are only a few in the race - ball winners that don't talk or react to the umpires:

I don't think there have been the standout players in the comp this year so I don't reckon you will need as many votes as in previous seasons to win it.  Cotch's 2nd half of the season has been much stronger than his 1st so if he is thereabouts at Round 12 then I would expect him to give it a big shake.

Adelaide will have Thompson and Dangerfield taking votes off each other.

Beams might be a big chance actually. If be polls well early then he may have enough legs to fall over the line at the end.

I hope Cotch spends all day winning the footy and kicking down to Jack - kill two birds with one stone!  ;D

Hard to see Watson getting any votes tonight. Swan (41), Beams, Pendlebury with 30+ possies and Cloke with 5 goals.

Hopefully Stripes you're right about Thompson and Dangerfield taking votes off each other. Likewise hopefully the Hawks take votes off each other especially Mitchell who usually polls well.

Cotch would have got the 3 votes yesterday. A draw means all players judged purely on their game which Cotch was clearly the best. Every time he gets the ball he makes something happen. Houli was great early and Jack good in front of goal. Boak gained a lot of possessions but didn't do a lot with them.

On the flip side Dangerfield would have polled well in the Adelaide game and Beams had a reasonable game. Dangerfield could be the smokey this year. Watson will have polled brilliantly early and then hope he can hang on as the others race home.

If Cotch wins the Brownlow we'll be the first club to have both the Coleman and Brownlow medal winners (different players) in 27 years. In 1985, Brad Hardie and Simon Beasley won the double for the Dogs, while Tony Lockett won both medals in the same year in 1987 when he was with the Saints.

The AFL website has a Brownlow predictor going. They've done the first six rounds and have Josh Kennedy leading with 13 votes. Cotch, Lids and Grigg all have just 3 votes each.

Ablett should be the outright favourite with Thompson & Watson second.  :'(

Interesting that they only had Cotch down for 3.  :huh He was awarded the best on ground for the Dreamtime game so there's 3 votes alone. Throw in the Melbourne game, West coast (best afield in a tight contest) and many other games where he was in the best despite losing and will likely pinch a couple of 2s or 1s. Think he should be double that at least by the end of round 6.  :pray

After 12 rounds Scott Thompson is on 19. Danger field hasn't stolen many votes unlike the collingwood spread.  Thompson is looking pretty good.

They had Cotch down for 12 votes (I had him down for 14 fwiw) after 12 rounds. His second half of the season was much better than his first so expect him to poll around 20 votes for rounds 13 - 23.

Thompson is looking dangerous but Dangerfield steps up in the second half which hopefully takes votes off him.  :pray ;D

this season was the stepping stone for CHIMP to
let the football know he has arrived.

this medal has lost its appeal i reckon over the last
few years.

with so many awards now its just another piece
to hang around ones neck.

The reason I stopped watching the Brownlow Medal night for years was that Richmond got pumped in so many games, that I didn't want to hear our opponents names being called out for 3, 2 and 1 votes round after round. By this logic, how can Gary Ablett POSSIBLY be the favourite when GC hardly won a game all year?
GO COTCH :thumbsup

Historically, sides that get blown away have no chance of registering votes, and GC suffered some pretty heavy losses this season. Conversely, sides that get beaten by a small margin have a good chance of sneaking a few votes even in a loss. As we not only got our win tally up to 10 and a half this year, but lost many games by less than a kick or two and were never demolished, I think Cotch has every chance of polling well.

He should poll very well and I hope the hell he wins, but there is the "Ablett" factor in there from the umpires. The media and umpires are consumed by him.

Cold Ghost lost 9 games this year by more than 10 goals, including a 126 point loss and 4 losses by over 90 points. If Gary Ablett polls votes in ANY of those results, then the voting system is a complete sham.

Can Cotchin break Richmond’s drought?
By Michael Rogers and Bradley Dawson
Thursday, September 20, 2012
Source: BigPond Sport

Only four Richmond players have ever won the coveted award, with the last being Ian Stewart in 1971, but Cotchin is easily the best chance of bringing Charlie to Punt Road since Kevin Bartlett dominated the MCG wing. The future Richmond captain was amongst the most influential players in at least 10 games this season, starring in the midfield and bagging 21 goals when pushed forward.

Historically, umpires also tend to notice certain players for more than just their on-field deeds. Where once blond shocks of hair made Peter Moore, Shane Crawford and Shane Woewodin stand out, Cotchin grabs the eye with his unique, hunched running style.

But is Cotchin’s form only relative? While the Tigers improved significantly, they still have a fairly shallow playing list which drops away after their core of stars, making Cotchin appear even better – perhaps better than he actually was.

GC's results are not relevant when it comes to Jnr being loved by the umps and media.

I would call Ablett a Brownlow specialist the way he racks up so many possessions in Junk time and can handle the footy 15 times with the end result being a minor score or an OOTF.
Also I suspect the AFL & The Dman would be rapt if the Brownlow were to head North and further justify their decision to expand the game nationally, but maybe I'm being a little paranoid.  ;)

Tab.com.au on Ch 7 tonight had Cotch and Ablett equal favourites at $3.50. There has been a big betting plunge on Sam Mitchell who has come into $9.

The Centrebet guy earlier said Ablett had drifted out a smidge and Cotch had come in to equal favoritism as well at $4.

Dangerfield wins the Brownlow! At least we think so ...

    The Age
    September 20, 2012

Based on the results of the 3AW, Age and AFL Coaches Association awards, we've come up with our prediction for this year's top ten at the 2012 Brownlow Medal.

theage.com.au predictions:
1. Patrick Dangerfield 31 (could poll in 15 games)
2. Jobe Watson 29 from 13
3. Sam Mitchell 26 from 13
4. Dayne Beans 25 from 12
eq 5. Josh Kennedy 24 from 9
eq 5. Trent Cotchin 24 from 11
eq 5. Gary Ablett 24 from 12
eq 5. Scott Thompson 24 from 10
9. Joel Selwood 22 from 10
10. Matthew Pavlich 22 from 8

Trent Cotchin $3.50:
(Round - votes) 5-2, 7-3, 9-3, 12-1, 16-3, 17-1, 18-2, 20-3, 21-2, 22-1, 23-3.
24 votes from 11 games
The smooth-moving Tiger star is one of the few 'new breed' chances who has a history with the umps - he polled a highly encouraging 15 votes last year. A huge chance to snare the three vote-winning games necessary to getting a big total. If he wins three instead of lesser votes during his brilliant finish to the season, he could make the Tiger army very happy.

RICHMOND
Trent Cotchin is one of the favourites for this year's medal, and it's little wonder.  The Tigers won only eight games last year and Cotchin polled 15 votes. The Tigers won 10 games this season, and Cotchin had a far better year. In the coaches’ award, he won ahead of Brownlow fancies Dayne Beams, Gary Ablett and Patrick Dangerfield. Others to come under attention will be Brett Deledio, Shaun Grigg and Dustin Martin. If you want a precedent in Cotchin’s favour, Richmond ruckman Roy Wright won two Brownlows, in 1952 and 1954, despite playing in teams that finished outside the finals.

Trent Cotchin
The 22-year-old has been far and away Richmond's best player this season. He has already claimed the Tigers' best and fairest for the second successive year, he won the AFL Coaches' Association Champion Player of the Year award and made the All-Australian side for the first time.
Cotchin is quick and game, good by hand and foot, brilliant in traffic and strong overhead. He also has a physical trait that sets him apart, a running style that makes it look like he is stooping to pass beneath a low door.
Close observers would have been on to Cotchin all season, but the hype only started to build towards the end of the season, especially after the game against the Western Bulldogs in round 20. In that match, he had 35 disposals and kicked three classy goals, which, it is fair to say, no one else could have kicked. He is that type of player.

Anyway Trent Cotchin, Ivan Maric, Shane Tuck, Jack Riewoldt and Chris Newman as captain will be on the Richmond table tonight.

Richmond's Trent Cotchin out to break Brownlow hoodoo

    Michael Manley
    From: Herald Sun
    September 24, 2012 5:15PM

PEOPLE crack jokes about Richmond's inability to make the eight, let alone win a premiership, but there is an even bigger Tigers hoodoo - the Brownlow Medal.

The Tigers have won just five Brownlows and have the longest drought of the established clubs - a whopping 41 years. The Tigers' last premiership was 32 years ago.

In order to win the 1971 Brownlow, Richmond had to recruit Ian Stewart, who already had two to his name at St Kilda.

Even Fitzroy could claim a Brownlow in 1981. The next-longest drought with the exception of interstate clubs is North Melbourne (1983).

This year, the Tigers are hoping to break through with equal favourite Trent Cotchin.

While the Tigers' overall Brownlow Medal record is poor, when it comes to Brownlow favourites it is nothing short of disastrous.

Cotchin will be following in the footsteps of two other Tiger centreman, Geoff Raines and Wayne Campbell, who started Brownlow favourites but on the night were never in contention.

In 1980, pretty boy Geoff Raines was all the pre-Brownlow rage. He was the centreman in a team which subsequently won the flag and he also went on to win the Tigers' best-and-fairest.

Raines was sensationally backed into Brownlow favouritism and some declared he was past the post.

In the finish in one of the more perplexing Brownlow results of all time he received no votes.

Fifteen years later another Tiger onballer in Wayne Campbell was red-hot before the count.

He received nine votes.

In the 1970s Kevin Bartlett started favourite several times and managed a second and a third. In 1974 he was an odds-on favourite and he finished third behind Keith Greig.

Even Tiger players running a place has been a rare event in recent years. When Matthew Richardson finished third in 2008 he was the first Tiger to have run a place since Maurice Rioli finished second in 1983.

So over to you, Trent Cotchin.

Fox Footy just caught up with Ivan Maric and Erin Howard on the red carpet, they asked who's hair took longer.

And as I wrote this they caught Jack and his missus (missed her name sorry!). Safe today that he is batting well above his average.

Watson SHOULD NOT score in the next 2 games or the AFL can get stuffed

12 goal loss to the Cats
100 point loss to the Hawks
Watson had the second most possies on the ground against the Cats and 37 possies against the Hawks (8 more than everyone else) so don't be surprised if he still gets votes in both games.

Umps have looked at the disposals stats sheets this year before voting IMV.

We'd never ever poll in 12 goal and 100 point losses
We're not one-man bands like Essendon and the Suns :nope

As long as Watson or Ablett don't get it I'll be happy.

Go Mitchell or Thompson.

Gold Coast lose 4 games by over 10 goals and Ablett polls votes. This is not just a joke but an

absolute obscene joke. I can see the AFL will stoop to any level to promote the game up there

even handing out BOG's to blokes whose team lost by 90+ points twice.

Mark handball, handball receive run bounce tackle sling handball handball receive running to the 50 point. Ablett has 5 touches in that passage for the most attractive point you could ever wish to see.

The Brownlow Medal has become a farce. :help

The premiership medal is far more valuable to the players. We have never been a team the umpires love. Look at how many Richmond greats never won the medal. Says it all.

Don't mind Jobby too much! The Brownlow is held in high esteem and for that reason alone would love Cotch to win it one day. Saying that it is an umpires award and I cant stand the girly softies so meh really!

It's a midfielders medal, Edwards did well for a forward pocket.

Other forward pockets

Rioli - 6 votes
Milne - 3
Matera - 3
Leroy Jetta - 3
Bruest - 3

Historically, forward pockets don't do that well in the Brownlow.

Congratulations Edwards!  :clapping

Great effort Cotch considering he had fewer passengers.

Well done to Jobe Watson on his Brownlow medal win.
Watson does get hyped as a player.

Cotch has more upside and will win a few even with the traditional bad umpires against us.
