The Melbourne Football Club selection #4

Oliver Wines, Bendigo Pioneers, 188cm, 90kg, 7/10/94
(http://i46.tinypic.com/1490fes.jpg)

Oliver is a hard at it ready to go midfield ball magnet which we so desperately need.
His endurance is outstanding and has an excellent defensive side to his game also.
Plays like a cross between Dale Thomas and Mark Coughlan when at his peak.

Bulldogs

Pick 5:
Troy Menzal
DOB: 22/9/1994
HT: 178cm WT: 77kgs

Younger brother of Geelong's Daniel.

He can play as a mid or forward. Has a great leap and is a good reader of the play. His SA Club coaches say he "hunts the footy". With the Doggies needing mid-field strength we believe Troy can fill that role for us. We have no concerns about his knee problems.

Pick 6

Kristian Jaksch
DOB: 7/10/1994
HT: 194cm WT: 85kg

A key position player who can play either end of the ground. Proving his versatility by playing on Joe Daniher in TAC final and kicking 7 goals in Vic Metro trial game. He is one of the best contested marks in the TAC Cup and beautiful kick

With the Doggies lacking KP at both ends of the ground we think Kristian can over time fill a huge void for us

Write ups to follow later today

7. Port Adelaide - Sam Mayes (North Adelaide, 187cm, 78kg, 20/5/94)

Port will be happy to grab a home grown talent like Mayes. A midsized midfield/forward with good endurance, speed and is an excellent kick (right-footer). He is has a good leap and is a clean outstretched mark for his size as well as being a good reader of the play. This year he has already been a regular contributor for North Adelaide (who made the prelim) in the SANFL senior playing 15 games and kicking 12 goals. So he'll be ready to play AFL in his first year although possibly moreso as a half-forward and then learning off the more senior mids in the rotation. Once he fully develops at AFL level he'll be a midfielder who can push forward and kick some goals. So he's an ideal type for modern footy where bench numbers and rotations are being limited and players need to be versatile to remain on the ground longer. Comparison wise he has been compared to a Pendelbury (Mayes was state representative at basketball) or a Ryan Griffen as Mayes can run off and burst away from his direct opponent. Criticism wise he's not the weekly 20+ possie mid yet but that's because he's being playing SANFL seniors as a half-forward. He also had a quiet-ish U18 Champs this year for his reputation after making All-Australian in the 2011 U18 Champs. Still showed his footskills kicking a freak goal from the boundary at Kardinia Park against WA that would make Stevie Johnson proud.

Brisbane Lions Selection #8

Jackson Macrae - Oakleigh Chargers, 189cm, 76kg, 3/8/94

We were delighted that Jackson surprisingly slipped to our first selection at Number 8.
He is an extremely talented and versatile medium midfielder who is also capable of playing in defence or attack.
He has all the skills and is a genuine goal kicking mid.

Pick #9 - Richmond Tigers (You won me over Craw) Jake Stringer

Age.......18
Height...191cm
Weight...91kg
Position...Utility

Jake Stringer is one of the most talented players in this draft and if it wasn’t for the broken leg he suffered last year he’d be the player everyone is talking about.

As it is Stringer will likely get drafted in the first 20 picks this year. Stringer has shown great resilience coming back from his serious injury and played some dominant games up forward of recent times. If you watched those games you’d be tempted to assume he is only a forward, which would be unfair to what we have seen of Stringer over time.

Stringer prior to injury showed he can play all over the ground and impact the contest much in the mold of a Luke Hodge. That trait is Stringer’s true value and I look forward to seeing it at AFL level.

Jake Stringer stronger
By Callum Twomey
Mon 22 Oct, 2012

Jake Stringer is expected to defy his broken leg to be taken early in the NAB AFL Draft

JAKE Stringer keeps the scans of his broken leg in a special spot in his bedroom cupboard. He doesn't look at them much, but knows where to go if he needs a quick reminder of his last two years, where documentation of his progress and struggle is jammed inside 17 by 14 inch envelopes.

Stringer has so many x-rays, it takes a while to find what he calls the "most gruesome" one, taken shortly after the compound fracture of his left leg in the opening round of the TAC Cup in 2011.

Others tell the story of his path since then, some showing the bones stuck together with pins and a rod. There are more recent ones, too, since the metal was removed and the bone had healed itself.

For Donna Stringer, Jake's mum, it feels like a "distant memory". For Jake, however, getting almost daily questions and enquiries about the injury keeps it fresh. When Stringer had his medical evaluation at this month's NAB AFL Draft Combine, they all came at once.

"There wasn't too many people sitting down when I went up for my go, that's for sure," Stringer told AFL.com.au.

"I think just about every person got up to have a look and a touch and a feel. It was a bit weird, you've got 18 club doctors standing around you poking, feeling, asking questions, getting you to do movements. It's confronting."

Stringer understands why it's happening. Before the injury, which happened while playing for the Bendigo Pioneers, Stringer was considered a likely part of last year's Greater Western Sydney mini-draft. The break of his tibia and fibula ended any chance of that.

Now only a few weeks out from the NAB AFL Draft, clubs are still unsure what to make of him. On talent, Stringer is in the best handful of players available this year. He's strong and tough, can do a lot of brilliant things and play nearly every position on the ground.

But they are countering his potential with his risk, wondering whether to pick him with a top-end selection or hope he slides until a little bit later. "At the moment, he's a mystery," says Leon Harris, Vic Country talent manager.

It all started when Stringer got caught awkwardly in a tackle, and felt his leg collapse and crack as he went to kick the ball. The bones ripped through the front of his left shin, leaving his foot and ankle to wobble.

At first glance he wasn't sure what had happened. Then the pain hit.

"It literally felt like someone had a saw and was just hacking away at my leg," he says.

He clawed at the grass as medicos took him off the ground in agony, and didn't look at his leg during the next 90 minutes or so while he waited for an ambulance to arrive.

When he got back to his home in Bendigo after the surgery, the injury's impact started to make a little more sense. He found he needed help doing all the things he could normally do himself: get something to eat and drink, shower, go to the toilet. Stairs at the front door, and again inside, wasn't ideal, though his long-time girlfriend Abbey Gilmore was always on hand.

Stringer's rehabilitation was built on smaller goals, with bigger ones in mind. He had to learn to run again, then re-teach himself how to kick on his left foot.

He wanted to be back up and going by December for the AIS-AFL Academy's camp in Canberra and then to be fine to train with the Western Bulldogs for a week in January. After that, about 12 months following the original break, Stringer had pencilled in a return to footy for the academy against the Box Hill Hawks at the MCG late in March.

At times he pushed too hard. His competitiveness had to be managed.

"Before Christmas last year, when Jake shouldn't have been doing much running, there were cones set up and guys were doing sprint testing over 10 or 15 metres," says David Newett, the Pioneers coach. "And he just blew them all away. He was limping really badly and had hardly trained, but as soon as the competition arose, Jake just wanted to be involved."

It was a difficult balance. His dad, John, watched Jake make his own decisions in his rehabilitation and find it frustrating when things didn't quite work. John runs a dairy distribution company, where Jake helps deliver milk to clients.

Jake's designated truck sits in the driveway at home ready to go, although John has sheltered Jake from some of the more strenuous work during his recovery.

"You have to be pretty meticulous about it: making sure the muscles come back, making sure you're not overtraining, making sure you tick all the boxes," John says.

"At his age - he's not a professional sportsman at this stage - he had to take it on board himself. To make those decisions as a young boy is tough."

Stringer met each of his deadlines. After the week at the Bulldogs - who loved him, like Geelong had the year before - Stringer needed surgery at the start of this February to remove the rod and screws.

It meant two weeks off his feet. Another five weeks after that he played for the AIS, winning a bet with former Pioneers, and current Vic Country, coach Mark Ellis that he would play in that game (Stringer got a couple of brand new footballs from Ellis for playing. He risked mowing Ellis' lawn for the season if he didn't).

He returned from the Europe tour and in Bendigo's first game of the season booted nine goals. He played like he did pre-injury: too strong, too smart and too quick for opponents, and having the game on his terms.

"I wanted to make sure that everyone knew I was coming back and I meant business," he says.

"I wasn't coming back to fill up the numbers, I wanted to show it hadn't all gone away."

But the performance led to expectations, some he couldn't meet.

Stringer's leg continued to give him problems. Every time it got a knock it hurt, and he was apprehensive. For a natural sportsperson, nothing was simple. It hadn't been that way throughout his life.

"I think sometimes you're born with an ability, and it doesn't matter, you could be a music prodigy or whatever it is," John says. "For some people, it's just in you. It's in Jake."

Basketball was the first sport to come easily to Stringer. John remembers Jake, "a little ball of muscle", shooting at the 10ft hoop before he was two years old. He played his first A-Grade basketball game in Maryborough, near Bendigo, when he was six. He even played against John, and older brother Travis, in a basketball game once, filling in for another team. He shot nine three-pointers that day.

There were cricket games in the backyard with Travis and other brother Brad, while a young Jed Adcock used to live nearby and join in. Brad plays footy at Eaglehawk, Jake's local club, while Travis is an accountant living in Bermuda.

Football came later, where he could put his aggression and power to better use. There are still signs of basketball instincts in his footy, in his spring when he leaps for marks, and his quick decisions in tight spaces.

But after the early form, it took a while this year to see all of that again. It wasn't there at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where Stringer battled for Vic Country. Some mismanagement didn't help his cause, either, despite best intentions.

"We backed off his running with about three weeks to go before the championships, and dropped off his workload so we could nurse him through," says Harris. "But in hindsight we didn't work him enough. He just needed more work. He was struggling."

After a quiet start to the championships, Stringer got a lift to Melbourne with Ellis ahead of the third-round meeting with Western Australia, in Perth. Ellis lives only five or six doors down from the Stringer family, at the other end of their hilly road, and has known him since he was 12. Ellis' advice carried weight. He broke his leg twice during his own career.

On the drive, he suggested Stringer try wearing a shin guard to protect the bone.

"I thought he was joking," Stringer says. "I thought there was no way known I was going to wear one, I'm not a ruckman."

But after another poor showing against Western Australia, where he got hit on the leg, Ellis urged Stringer to give it a go. A week or so later he visited the local SportsPower store, bought a shin guard and tucked it under his sock against the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. He had 25 disposals.

"I felt like I had everything back again," he says. "Just having this little guard there covered it, so if it got hit it didn't hurt, I could keep going. I wasn't worrying about it and that was when I started to play better."

He played three more games for the Pioneers after that, and then three for Bendigo Gold in the VFL. Despite the occasional limp during games, Stringer impressed.

He gathered 25 touches against Box Hill, showing he could mix it with the bigger types (he is 191cm and 94kg). It also showed that playing as a strong and dynamic midfielder - where most think he'll end up - wasn't beyond him.

The limp has caused some consternation for clubs, although he didn't think he was the smoothest runner before the injury.

"They've been getting into me about my gait, but when you haven't been running too flash for 17 years and then you break your leg and you come back and they expect you to run perfectly ... I don't know," he says.

Stringer doesn't feel like he's achieved anything by getting back from the injury and being a likely first-round pick. Most around him have seen him change through the process, though. His dad thinks he's become more resilient, Newett recognises a level of empathy that's come out more, and although Harris still sees the strut and cheeky smile in Stringer, he knows there has been times he has questioned himself. Not anymore.

"It's an interesting one because so many people now are doubting me because of my leg," Stringer says.

"But for me I know come round one next year I'll be ready. And there'll be nothing that will stop me from doing that. My leg's fine, everything's fine. If I don't play round one, I'd be pretty disappointed."

Stringer knows the last two years will stay with him - the scar on his shin is still clear - but he doesn't want it to define him.

"I've tried to look at as a big story. And this injury was just a part of the story, not the whole thing," Stringer says.

Always Carlton, always cheating  ;D

Nah seriously go for it Magic if you want to. We weren't taking salary cap contraints into this (ie. his $800k p.a. salary) and it's likely Tippett will go into the draft pool.

13. Gold Coast -  Jonothan O’Rourke (Calder Cannons, Height: 183cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 21/04/1994)

Surprised a little he was still available. O'Rourke is an inside midfielder (he can play outside as well) with a turn of speed which allows his to burst out of traffic, top footskills (76% efficiency U18 Champs & 73% in the TAC Cup) and a good footy brain with overall awareness which enables him to make good decisions in congested situations and hit targets more often than not. More your natural footballer type who works hard with and without the footy - the type back in favour with AFL club recruiters. In 2011 he missed most the season with a hamstring injury but he came back this year to show he's worth taking with a high draft pick. He averaged 18 disposals in the U18 Champs for Vic Metro.

15. North Melbourne – Dayle Garlett

Height: 180cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 9/1/1994

Recruited from: Swan Districts

Well what can we say other than we are absolutely wrapped that this young man has slipped to our first pick. North are in the market for midfield depth and small crumbing forward types, and Garlett fits this mould. He is a highly talented player that can play both inside and outside midfield, and kicks goals when thrown forward. Plays with flair and has the X-Factor which Norths other mids tend to lack, so we see Dayle complimenting our existing midfield.

A high risk but high reward proposition and one which at pick 15 we couldn't pass up given his massive potential upside.

As an added bonus, Dayle has a large extended family and given Norths financial situation, drafting Dayle will have a positive effect on membership numbers.

Geelong Pick #16......Josh Simpson

Name: Josh Simpson
Position: Midfielder/Forward
Age (by draft day): 18
Height: 183cm
Weight: 72kg

Quick Notes on Josh Simpson
Lightning quick
Kicks goals
Hard to tackle
Great acceleration
Uses the football well
Will attack the footy and the man as required
Dual sided
Slight build

Josh Simpson in detail

Josh Simpson will be rated very differently from club to club, which makes it hard to get a read on where he will get drafted.

Simpson’s evasiveness is probably his biggest strength, he has that rare combination of acceleration and agility which makes him dangerous in any situation. Once he gets himself outside of the contest his ability to use the football also shines.

The question marks around Simpson are related to his build and his ability to compete physically at AFL level. I suspect that Simpson will always be a light build but his attack on the contest and the man appears to improve every time I see him, I don’t envision Simpson having any trouble transitioning to AFL level.

I’d be shocked if Simpson isn’t drafted in the top 20 and expect him to be gone by the time pick 15 comes around.

18. Collingwood - Thomas Clurey (KPD, Height: 193cm; Weight: 85kg; Club: Murray Bushrangers)

tigs2011 write-up:
Clurey IMO is the best of a good group of KPD (not including Plowman who I’d have as a 3rd tall def/mid). Whilst I think Smith is probably a better shut down defender, Clurey is a better rebounder and more all-around KPD. In that sense he’s probably more you’re the type of guy to take the 2nd forward who he can run off a bit more. He probably won’t go first round but I like him a lot.

Knightmare's on BF:
Clurey has a solid shutdown game but what has stood out in his play has been his rebounding game and ball use. Showed plenty during the u18 champs and throughout the season. Uses the ball well coming out of the back half and has excellent footskills for a key defender. Strong overhead. Reads it well and can get off his man to take the intercept mark. Endurance elite and tested superbly at the draft combine.
Style: Ben Reid

19. Collingwood - Taylor Garner (Forward, Height: 186cm, Weight: 77kg, Club: Dandenong Stingrays)

tigs2011's write-up:
Garner is one I wasn’t overly impressed with in the televised games. At this stage he seems very patchy, which admittedly can happen with his type of player. Struggles to always get involved in the game and hasn’t really put together 4 quarters. As a medium forward I really want to see him hit the scoreboard harder as I do believe he has the talent to do so. He also has some ball-winning ability and I’d like to see him play more midfield minutes to boost his draft chances if I was going to take him this high. Could go as high as Richmond at pick 9.

Knightmare's:
Garner is an interesting player who can play forward or through the midfield to a high level. Up forward looks dangerous and is a strong marking target. 1v1 marking ability good and has some ability in the air. Has a great leap on him and can take a hanger. Tackling ability good. When he steps up into the midfield can win his own ball and is a very strong contested ball winner which is great to see considering he isn’t yet super strongly built. I do have some concerns over the consistency of his ball use and have found he isn’t always clean at ground level which is a concern for a forward, additionally decision making on a number of occasions throughout the u18 championships let him down and didn’t always find the right target, but there is a fair bit to work with none the less and the improvement from seemingly nowhere is very encouraging and I suggest there is more to come.

DOB: 03/03/1994
Height: 174cm
Weight: 74kg
Club: Glenelg/South Australia

Bio: Left-footed small forward/midfielder with explosive pace and rare agility. Prolific ball winner who excels at stoppages and is extremely dangerous around goals with set shots or snaps. In 2011 won All Australian NAB AFL Under-18 Championship honours as a bottom-aged player and debuted at senior level. Backed it up this year with All Australian honours, averaging 26.2 disposals.

Pick 22 - Western Bulldogs

Jesse Lonergan
Ht: 183cm
Wt: 86kgs

Strong bodies inside mid fielder. Although not finishing in the top 10 in any of the categories at the combine his overall results were consistent. We believe he is ready to play AFL in 2013 and it is pleasing to know that apart from the mid field he can play off HB or HF as well

Pick 23 - Sydney Swans

TOM CLUREY
DOB: 23/3/1994
Height: 193cm
Weight: 85kg
Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers

With LRT not getting any younger and the Swans defensive stocks not known for their height, they have opted for KPP defender Tom Clurey.  Tom Clurey is your modern day key defender, he can shut down a dangerous opponent or set up attacks from the back half.  He was a key post in defence for Vic Country in the U18 Championships, and while he did not dominate he managed to get the job done each game.  He has a solid shutdown game with the ability to defend deep forward or further out around the 50 (on the CHF types).

Clurey’s greatest strength is his decision making, he reads the play so well that he knows when to mark and when to play the percentages.  When he does decide to go for the intercept mark he commits to it 100% which rarely sees him beaten and he also has an excellent rebounding game.  He uses the ball very well out of the back half to set up the play and has excellent foot skills, especially for a tall defender.  For a key defender Clurey possesses great footskills, which is important when you take as many intercept marks as he does.  He reads the play well and has strong hands, and his intercept marking reminds you of Ben Reid.  He has shown excellent leadership qualities and has elite endurance; has all the tools to take LRT's mantle and become the general in defence for the Swans.

Ok then, while we await the outcome of the Sydney Swans appeal against Collingwood for reneging on a secret trade deal, here is our pick 23:

Pick 23 - Sydney Swans

Tanner Smith
DOB: 9/3/1994
Height: 194cm
Weight: 83kg
Recruited from: North Ballarat

Well it should probably come as no surprise that we will be targeting a key defender with one of our first picks in this draft and With LRT not getting any younger and the Swans defensive stocks not known for their height, they have opted for KPP defender Tanner Smith.  Smith is the best of the strict full-backs in this draft and has had a solid 2012, in what was largely a year of development for him.

Typically a pure shut-down defender, Smith has been given the opportunity to play some more attacking roles in the backline, as well as up forward.  That said, we are recruiting him to play as the future general in the backline role that LRT has made his own.

He won’t be right to go for a couple of years though as the boy needs to make very good friends with the gym – whilst he is a good height and has proven his strength to be a good closing speed, he has been easily out-bodied by many opponents this year, such as Grundy, who is a great example of the size of players he’d be facing were he to play AFL next year.  He is renowned for his tenacity and ability to do the one-percenters as well as win the ball, representing Vic Country well in the AFL Under-18 Championships.  Some liken him to a young Dustin Fletcher; spindly arms and legs that go in all directions but make him hard to play against.  They see a man growing into his body and we are excited about his prospects.

Essentially, he’s a no-frills defender, with good closing speed and a very good spoil, exactly what will suit the Swans and what they will need in the near future.

Brisbane Lions Compensation selection #24

SAM COLQUHOUN
DOB: 20/12/1994
Height: 180cm
Weight: 73kg
Club: Central District/South Australia

We are very pleased that Sam is still availiable at selection 24. We suspect other clubs couldn't be stuffed learning to spell his name correctly.  ;D
He is a genuine footballer with elite disposal, endurance and great leg speed. He aslo has a great attitude and is a genuinely nice kid.
We see Sam as a good utility prospect who can eventually be a part of our midfield rotation but initially we see his role as a wing/back flanker until he improves his ability to get his own ball.
He averaged 28 disposals for SA, was their MVP and made All Australian.

St Kilda selection #25

NATHAN HROVAT
DOB: 07/06/94
Height: 175cm
Weight: 76kg
Club: Northern Knights/Vic Metro

St Kilda are rubbing their greedy hands together seeing Nathan has slipped through to us at selection 25.  :cheers

Hrovat works hard, wins the contested football and uses it well consistently. I'd suspect that his height is why he has been overlooked with the prior 24 picks, but we believe that he is good enough and will make an impact at AFL level for a long period of time.

Averaged 25.2 disposals (10 contested) and 4.4 clearances in winning Vic Metro's Most Valuable Player and All Australian honours this year.

Can read more on Nathan on the AFL website. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/150187/default.aspx (http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/150187/default.aspx)

St Kilda selection #26

ADAM CARTER
DOB: 17/04/94
Height: 179cm
Weight: 75kg
Club: South Fremantle Football Club/WA

Tiga having stolen Colquhoun at selection 24 means we'll pick a player we can see filling the same role rebounding off half back in the future for us. We initially had another 2 players marked for selection 26, but believe they may slip to pick 41 and 44 so will gladly call out Adam Carter here.

Carter has the ability to play off half back, as well as impact in the midfield (similar to Brandon Ellis). Has shown through the champs he is capable of shutting down those irritating small forwards while providing strong rebound using his long accurate kick coming out of the back half. Has a good core strength so when he moves into the middle is difficult to tackle and is very good at winning his own ball. Is also very clean with his disposal under pressure.

Averaged 16 disposals at an impressive 78 per cent for WA at NAB AFL Under 18 level. Brother to Mitch Carter at Carlton.

With pick 28, GWS takes:

Spencer White (KPF)

A bit of a reach at this pick, however it's GWS's last pick in the National Draft.  Spencer, if he gets his head on straight, could be a star.  Has x-factor, and is a late season bolter in the draft rankings.

29. Hawthorn – Nathan Wright

Height: 183cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 16/02/94
Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays

With Hawthorns defensive stocks sured up with the addition of Lake, and the forward line in good shape, we are looking to draft the best available midfielder with our first pick who can have an impact within our immediate premiership window, and Wright fits that mould. Wright is a line braking midfielder with excellent pace who can win his own ball, and has clean hands. Can play off half-back, but is perhaps more likely to play as a outside-winger who can at times rotate through the centre.

A perfect fit for the club, we see Nathan as a player who is ready made but also will be a 200 game player for the Hawks.

Nathan's parents also keep a large aviary at home, and we are keen to speak to Neville and Maude regarding pet memberships.

30. Port Adelaide - Nick Graham ...... ( Gippsland Power, Hgt: 182cm, Wgt: 76kg, DOB: 12/06/1994 )

Midsized midfielder/utility who won the Morrish medal this year as best player in the TAC Cup where he was a prolific ballwinner averaging 25 disposals. He can also push forward which will appeal to AFL recruiters who are looking for mids who are versatile. He's a good overhead mark for his size and the defensive side of his game (chasing/tackling/attack at the ball) has improved significantly this year where it is now something he is known for. Some quarters think his kicking can be a little inconsistent at times but when he's on you don't notice it. Should make a solid AFL player at the top level.

31. Port Adelaide - Jason Pongracic ..... ( Dandenong Stingrays, Hgt: 183cm, Wgt: 85kg, DOB: 21/04/1994 )

Strong-bodied inside midfielder/half-forward who kicked 16 goals from 11 games this year. Was initially hampered earlier in the season with a hip injury but was able to string a few games together in the second half of this year to play some consistent footy albeit moreso as a forward. Pongracic reads the play well, uses his strong body well to split packs and win the contested footy and he is a ferocious tackler which will very much please his eventual AFL coach. He is also a good overhead mark for his height. For an inside mid he also uses the ball well by hand and foot. The question marks on him are (i) being an earlier developer has he got away with being stronger than his junior peers and (ii) he's not overtly quick due to his body shape so will that be an issue at AFL level. Some compare him to a Brent Moloney or  Jason Porplyzia.

I rate Pongracic, was hoping he'd slip to 41 for the Sainters next pick. Just goes to show, we'll have some quality players still around (especially if a few clubs do left field choices) by the time our 2nd, 3rd and 4th picks come around  :gotigers

I do too. Great natural footballer who works hard. Good attitude and does all the 1% that are often missed by recruiters particularly because he does his best work in congestion. Would be very happy for the Tigers to pick him up with a later pick. :thumbsup

Pick #32 Richmond

Name: Tim Broomhead
Position: Midfield/Utility
Age (by draft day): 18
Height: 182cm
Weight: 73kg

Quick Notes on Tim Broomhead
Can play anywhere on the ground

Tim Broomhead- portmagpies.com.au
Good skills
Strong mark
Great endurance
Works hard
Quick
Wins the contested footy
Tim Broomhead in detail
Tim Broomhead is a hardworking midfielder who can also move forward or back as required.

Broomhead’s greatest asset is his work rate, on the ball it sees him get to more contests and up forward his repeat leads are a real standout.

If Broomhead’s disposal was 5-10% better we’d be talking about him as a top 15 pick, unfortunately whilst his disposal is solid it isn’t as damaging as others.

Expect Broomhead to get drafted somewhere near pick 30 although in recent times the whisper is he may go a little higher.

Brisbane Lions Selection #33

MATTHEW HAYNES
From: (Northern Knights, Vic)
DOB: 19/03/94
Height: 190cm
Weight: 76Kg

We are absolutely thrilled that Matthew was still available for us at selection 33. We believe Matthew will eventually be the ideal replacement for the now retired Josh Drummond.
Like Josh, Matthew has pace to burn and elite disposal by foot making him an excellent weapon off half back. He Averaged 15.8 disposals at 68.3 percent efficiency in NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Pick #34 Richmond

Name: Rory Atkins
Position: Midfielder
Age (by draft day): 18
Height: 186cm
Weight: 80kg

Quick Notes on Rory Atkins
Good decision making.
Wins the contested ball.
Good overhead mark.
Agile.
Rory Atkins in detail
Rory Atkins is a quality inside midfielder who can rack up disposals at ease.

Atkins has shown a tendancy to go missing over the last year and this should see him slide from where most people had him getting drafted earlier this year.

Atkins has been played as a half forward with mixed results, I like him as a midfielder where he does his best work.

Atkins now seems like a bit of a gamble so expect him to get selected after the first 30 selections are completed.

Great pick TFT.

My write up...

Pick #17 - Fremantle - Mason Shaw (KPF/2nd Ruck)
Height: 197cm
Weight: 82kg
Club: South Fremantle

Freo are glad that they get local boy Mason Shaw to fill their void at FF. Big monster in the goal square who is not dis-similar to a young Kurt Tippett except he's actually learnt how to kick. IMO Shaw is the best KPF in this draft. He's everything you want in a young KPF, tall, athletic, strong mark and a good kick of the footy. Shaw was the dominant forward in the WAFL colts a year ago as an underage kid, kicking 66 goals including 7.0 in the Grand Final. Fast forward a year and you barely hear about him. Mitch Brown broke his jaw in a WAFL praccy game at the start of the year which halted his start to the season proper but that didn't affect his form as he came out and had 12 kicks for a lazy 8.4. Fair effort if you ask me. I get the feeling that Mason has been cruising a little bit this season and now that we have him I'll admit it was us who asked him to tank his way down to us.

Shaw is a big game player as evidenced by his 7 goal haul in last years Grand Final and backing that up with 5.0 in this years grand final. Has some ability as shown in the Champs to play as a 2nd ruck but ideally he'll develop into a stay at home forward.

Last season played 21 games for his 66 goals. This year only managed the 10 games for a total of 40 goals. Averaging almost 1 goal per game more.

Pick 35. Essendon

Marvin Warrell, 18, 182cm, 70kg

Warrell is capable both as a small forward or in the midfield. Has had some very good games including this year's WAFL grand final where he kicked three goals in to guide South Fremantle to it’s second premierships in consecutive years. Clever ball-user who always seems to have more time than others, with the ball in his hand. Needs to improve his endurance to allow him to get to more contests. Is a natural footballer who will develop into a dangerous ball user in the future with the proper training.

Kevin Sheehan says: "Medium forward/midfielder with excellent vision and awareness. Has very clean hands and disposes of the ball very effectively on both sides of his body. A creative player that has the ability to find time and space regularly. His defensive pressure is a real feature of his game. Played two games with WA during the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships."

38. North Melbourne – Matthew McDonough

Height: 180cm, Weight: 85kg

Recruited from: Woodville-West Torrens

McDonough is a solid small forward who kicks plenty of goals.

He had a very strong championships for SA kicking 17 goals across the 5 games, including two hauls of six and with a strong body should be pushing for senior selection from next season.

St Kilda selection #41

LIAM MCBEAN
DOB: 25/08/94
Height: 203cm
Weight: 84kg
Club: Calder Cannons/Vic Metro

Happy to see Liam slip through to us at pick 41, we believe he has all the traits to impact at AFL level in a few years time.   :clapping  Will be great to watch McBean and McEvoy alternating forward and in the ruck in a couple of years time.

Kevin Sheehan says: "Lightly framed ruckman/key defender who can win the ball in the air and at ground level. Very agile player who is gifted athletically and makes good decisions with the football. Is an accurate shot for goal when he goes forward. Played mainly as a key defender in 2012 AFL U18s Champs where he’s still developing his game. Dangerous as a tall forward."

Not many articles floating around on McBean at the moment, but can read some more below.

42. North Melbourne – Lewis Pierce

Height: 202cm, Weight: 87kg

Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays

North are arguably in need of some long term ruck depth, and Pierce is a long term project with a lot of potential upside.

Pick 43 Richmond

Name: Shane Nelson
Position: Midfielder
Age (by draft day): 19
Height: 178cm
Weight: 70kg

Shane was overlooked in last seasons draft but has has a Stella season for WAFL club West Perth.
He is only small but is super quick and highly skilled, could easily become our next Foley (with better skills) very quickly.

It was expected Nelson would be recruited 15-30 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, but an illness suffered on the eve of last year's combine saw him lose 7kg, limiting his involvement in the testing.

Below is last seasons draft profile........

Quick Notes on Shane Nelson
Kicks goals
Solid skills
Has pace
Breaks lines

Potential First round draft pick

Shane Nelson in detail
Shane Nelson is a fast link up player who breaks the lines and delivers the football to dangerous areas to great effect.

Nelson is one of the fittest players to be drafted this year. When you combine his pace with great endurance it allows a player to rack up some pretty big numbers in terms of possessions and with Nelson you know most of his possessions are moving the ball forwards.

Nelsons skills are a talking point, some say he has an “accurate kick” whilst others believe it is his weakness. Personally I’d like to see his foot skills improve but Nelson makes up for that lack of polish by making good decisions and putting the football in dangerous areas.

There has been the odd rumbling about Shane Nelson being a chance to go in the top 10 of the AFL Draft, I think that’s a little high and have him going between pick 15-30 at this stage.

St Kilda selection #44

AIDAN CORR
DOB: 17/05/94
Height: 195cm
Weight: 86kg
Club: Northern Knights/Vic Metro

Really tough pick this one, had our eyes on 2 players, can only take the one and we opted for the defender in Corr as we have already secured Hickey, Lee and McBean who I believe will all play as tall forwards with Hickey and McBean having stints in the ruck.

Kevin Sheehan says: “Tall defender who is extremely competitive by nature and spoils aggressively. Has good speed and agility for a tall and uses the ball well by foot to advantage. Takes a strong mark and can go forward to good effect. Injured just prior to Round 4 and 5 of the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships and missed the final two matches. AIS-AFL Academy member.”

At the combine, Corr was rated in the top 6% for the 20m Sprint Teast with 2.89secs and ranked equal 7th in the Buckley Kicking Test (27/30).

His closing speed and team oriented work give him the tools to close down on the oppositions most athletic tall forward.

Pick #45 Sydney

Name: Andrew Boston
Position: Midfielder
DOB: 23/3/94
Height: 180cm
Weight: 75kg

The Swans are going for the best available mid with their next pick and have selected Andrew Boston, an 18 year old midfielder from Broadbeach.  We are stoked that he fell though to us at pick 45 because we rated him in the top 30.  He is an outside mid who can also get his own contested ball and can push forward with great effect (he was the first player in the draft to kick a perfect score in the goal kicking test).  He is a polished player who uses the ball well on either foot and was a standout performer in this year's NAB Championships, averaging 18 disposals on his way to MVP and All Australian honours.  Two of his games in the Championship indicate his potential:

Game 3: 28 disposals (23 kicks), 11 contested possessions and 5 clearances.
Game 5: 23 disposals (17 kicks), 10 contested possessions, 74% efficiency, 3 clearances and a goal.

Boston’s come off a big year in the NEAFL, announcing himself as the best talent to come out of Queensland this season and was given the Rising Star award on the back of consistent performances where he managed bags of four, five and six goals in his first eight senior games.

Kevin Sheehan says: “Medium midfielder who excelled in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships for QLD, averaging 18.2 disposals at 70% and winning All Australian honours. Clean hands and neat disposal skills are features of his game.”

Bump. Danog it's your turn.

Still a couple of names available who I thought would've gone earlier. The depth of the draft doesn't seem to be too bad over the first two rounds going by what we've come up with so far. Hopefully a good sign for us to find some gems in the real draft if we've done our homework properly :pray.

West Coast

Pick 46:

Tim O’Brien

Height: 192cm Wt: 81kg

Key forward prospect who allows Darling to move up to the 2nd tall role.  His selection is more important now that Lynch has moved to Collingwood as an UFA.

Pick #47 Sydney

Name: Dean Towers
Position: Midfielder
Age:  22
Height: 189cm
Weight: 83kg

The Swans are going for a mature age player from Nth Ballarat with their next pick and have selected Dean Towers, a 22 year old midfielder.  He plays well as a running half back or outside midfielder who likes to use his power, acceleration and speed to break the lines and create space. His skill level is solid without being spectacular but his work ethic and willingness to learn are traits that we believe we can work with.

Towers cemented his position in the North Ballarat senior side this year and has been rewarded with selection in the VFL State Squad, VFL Team of the Year, and winner of the 2012 Fothergill-Round Medal Winner as the most promising young talent in the VFL competition following in the footsteps of Ahmed Saad (2011), Michael Hibberd (2010), Michael Barlow (2009), Robin Nahas (2008), and Aaron Davey (2003).  He also broke Trent Croad's long standing (1997) draft record for the vertical standing jump.

Edit: corrected draft pick number

Regardless of the fun factor in this exercise each year, I really appreciate the information you get out of it.  Having to make a pick later in the draft forces you to look through the draftees that don't get written about every 5 minutes and gives you a better understanding of who might be coming to our club.  And in that vein, I had never taken any notice of the last pick I did for Sydney, Dean Towers from Ballarat.  Reading different articles on him it seemed to me that he could be another Steve Morris type.  Does anyone who watches a bit of the VFL know if this might be the case, or have any other thoughts on him?

Melbourne Demons Selection #49

MICHAEL CLOSE
Age:18
Height: 195cm
Weight: 82kg
Club: North Ballarat Rebels

With selection 49 we are taking a bit of a gamble with Michael due to his history of injuries but we believe if he can get his body right, he will be an excellent power forward prospect who can pinch hit in the ruck when required. Michael has elite endurance and can run all day, making him a real handful for defenders. If he did not have such an interrupted under 18's campaign, I am almost certain he would have gone first or second round as an elite KP prospect.

Western Bulldogs:

Pick 50:
Lachie Hunter
Ht: 181cm
Wt: 78kgs

Son of former Footscray player Mark. We feel we've snared a good prospect via this Father/Son selection. Lachie is considered a highly skilled player who can play through the mid-field or up forward. Analysts rate him as having a good footy smarts.

Pick 51:
Kamdyn McIntosh
Ht: 192cm
Wt: 78kgs

Played 4 senior games for Peel Thunder near the end of 2012. Kamdyn is a tall defender that can play on talls or smalls. Considered a good decision maker who reads the play very well that compliments his skills. Has good endurance as his 4th placing in combine 3km time trial suggest. He also finished top 10 at the combine in the Beep Test and kicking assessment. The Bulldogs need KP players and although he will need to spend alot of time in the gym to add muscle and condition we believe Kamdyn can be a good long term KP back for us over the next decade. we were actually surprsied he survived until the 3rd round

Pick 52 - Essendon -  Jacob Ballard (186cm midfielder - Northern Knights)

Ballard is seriously under rated by he AFL community imho. He had a super consistent season for the Knights in the TAC Cup and was named in the bests in all but two of his 13 games this year. And he continued on with that form in the U18 Championships, and while he wasn't a standout he won plenty of ball and used it very well off of half back. One thing he showed for Vic Metro was that he doesn't need a lot of game time to win the ball. And even with his Draft Combine invite, it still seems as though people aren't really talking about him all that much. He is 186cm and has a mature body, he'll be pushing for selection in his debut season. He can run all day as he proved with a top 10 beep test result, and he uses the ball very well by foot. With his size, skills and athletic ability, he looks to be a perfect fit for the modern game, and I think he could easily push into the second round. What will dictate where he gets picked is whether teams think he will become that big bodied midfielder or if a career at half back is more likely. Either way, I think he could be a good player.

Name: Jacob Ballard
Position: Midfield/Defender
Age (by draft day): 18
Height: 186cm
Weight: 82kg
Quick Notes
•   Very fit (14.2 beep test).

Jacob Ballard- Photo appears with approval of Arj Online Images. All Rights Reserved
•   Strong in one on one contests.
•   Good disposal.
•   Strong mark.
•   Wins the football.
Jacob Ballard is a hard working competitive midfielder with a big engine who can also spend time in the back line as required.
Despite Ballard’s elite endurance there is a lot to like about him as a backman rather than an onballer. In defense Ballard is competitive both at ground level and when the ball comes in aerially, he still collects a lot of the football and his solid disposal can set up rebound attacks all day.
As a midfielder Ballard is solid but he is unlikely to be one of the top line midfielders at any AFL club.
Ballard will likely get drafted somewhere after pick 40 in this years draft.

Melbourne - Selection #53

MARCO PAPARONE
Age:18
Height: 193cm
Weight: 84kg
Club: East Fremantle

With Marco we have chosen another tall forward with elite fitness, but Marco also combines this with a very good goal sense and an ability to create something out of nothing.
We don't expect homesickness to be an issue as Marco is all about the footy.

If adelaide get a pick we will take  Shannon Taylor from Claremont

Composed small midfielder who can play an inside or outside role. Has excellent pace as shown when he was the fastest player over 20 metres (2.86 seconds) at last year’s NAB AFL Draft Combine at Etihad Stadium when considered for the mini draft. Represented WA again in the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships, averaging 14.5 disposals, four inside 50s and three tackles. Good user of the ball by hand and foot.

55. Essendon - Tullio DeMatteis (184cm midfielder - Norwood)

Tullio DeMatteis is an exciting young prospect at the Norwood Football Club who plays on the wing, in the mid-field and up forward. He has exceptional speed from his previous involvement with athletics and participated in the Bay Sheffield in late 2011. Possessing an excellent kick, Tullio is a member of the 2012 SA U18 squad.

Kevin Sheehan says: "An explosive medium half forward/winger with the ability to break away from the contest and step his way past opponents. His clean hands and goal sense make him a dangerous player when forward. Played two games with SA at Under-18 level and is averaging 24 disposals in four games with Norwood at Colts level."

Pick 57. Gold Coast - Matthew Dick (Calder Cannons, 187cm, 86kg, DOB: 03/11/1994)

Medium defender who has great speed (2.88sec for 20m sprint), is a good kick and topped the clean handball test at the Draft Combine dropping just one point. He's a good decision maker who can play on taller or smaller opponents. At AFL level he'll be a linebreaking rebounding half-back and/or a winger. The '80m' type who runs 25m and kicks 55m. His solid body-size means he'll be able to play some senior games next year which would appeal to Gold Coast with their young list.

Pick 59. Gold Coast - Jack Frost ( Williamstown, 194cm, 87kg, 25/02/1992 )

Going for a bit of an outsider here. Frost is a 20 y.o. key defender who arrived at Williamstown last year knowing he required two hip operations during the off season which interrupted his whole preseason. As a result he didn't play in the Willy seniors until the final round of the home/away season this year. However from then on he starred at full-back during the VFL finals. He only conceded three goals in a month of football playing on the likes of Matt Little (Bendigo forward and 2010 Frosty Miller medallist), Dean Galea (Port Melbourne) and the two big young Geelong boys Mitch Brown and Nathan Vardy. The Suns need to sure up their defence and provide ready-made support and back-up down there for the experienced Nathan Bock.

I might use tigs2011's mock draft to get this moving again.

61. West Coast - Laine Wilkins (Midfielder/Forward)
Height: 189cm
Weight: 78kg
Club: Peel Thunder
Range: 30-late
Description:Wilkins is an interesting midfield/forward prospect who did his prospects no harm on the big stage nearly single handedly dragging WA back into the game against Metro with 3 third quarter goals. Athletically he will test off the charts in the vertical leap and is quite a competent overhead mark, freakish speed and good skills. However, he is prone to the odd howler but that can be fixed at the next level IMO. As displayed in the Champs he is a guy with huge hurt factor whether it be midfield or as a forward. Have moved him back up my order as I think his athletic traits will see him go early rather than later.

62. West Coast - Nicholas Rodda (KPD)
Height: 194cm
Weight: 94kg
Club: West Perth
Range: 30-late
Description:Rodda is a guy who I think will go higher than expected due to needs. He’s a lovely size and a very good full back. Can shut down an opponent but is also a very good kick for a FB of his size, which is a rare commodity to have. Capable of taking the kick-ins as well as linking up on the rebound and being able to hurt opposition teams with his foot skills which will see him go reasonably high for a full back.

No probs Danog.

Pick 65. GWS - Mitch Clisby
DOB: 5/1/90
Hgt: 182cm
Wgt: 75kg
Club: North Adelaide (SANFL)

Clisby is a 22 year old attacking half-back who can also play on the wing as well rotate through the midfield. He played 22 of a possible 23 matches with the Roosters this year culminating in a preliminary final loss to West Adelaide. His exhilarating form during the SANFL finals series is what has caught the attention of AFL recruiters. The Giants need players with more experience to help with the development and support of their young guns. So Clisby with his pace, a strong skill set and the ability to read the game would be a useful late pick up for GWS.

Pick 66. Sydney - Max Duffy
DOB: 11/4/93
Hgt: 188cm
Wgt: 77kg
Club: East Fremantle

The Swans have gone for an older player with this pick.  Max Duffy is a mercurial 188cm forward who was part of the 2010 AIS-AFL Academy.  He fell off the radar in 2011 but has resurfaced this year as a draft prospect, playing 15 games with East Fremantle and kicking 33.32.  He is quick, has X-factor, and at this year's screening he ran a 2.94sec 20m sprint and a 14.2 beep test.

Pick 67. Sydney - Ryan Johnson
DOB: 12/9/93
Hgt: 191cm
Wgt: 91kg
Club: Morningside

Sydney have gone for another older player with pick 67 - Ryan Johnson from Morningside in Qld.  Johnson plays mainly as a defender but can go forward if needed.  He is a good judge of the ball in the air and does not get caught up overplaying his man and not being aware of where the ball is. He chooses good times to leave his man and when he does he impacted the contest and more often than not cutting out the ball. He has good hands for a defender and is a good mark of the ball but he doesn't overplay the mark. He makes good decisions about when to mark and when to spoil. His spoiling is good and he will crunch it.

75. Essendon - Sam Siggins (196cm defender - Lauderdale)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8xZwOM2ruo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8xZwOM2ruo)

At a Glance

From: Tasmania
Born: 20 March 1994
Height: 196cm
Weight: 88kgs

Tasmanian tall defender with plenty of size, he is almost a perfect size for a KPD - he has the body to mix it up with the genuine tall forwards. Watch him play though, and he moves well enough to play as a third tall defender and he does provide enough run off of half back to be a threat going forward in that position. I think he might just quietly make a run up the draft order. Happy to take him with Pick 75.

St Kilda selection #76

JAMES STEWART
DOB:
Height: 197cm
Weight: 82kg
Club: Sandringham Dragons / Vic Metro

Will take a project player at 76, but a very decent one in Stewart. Very surprised he hasn't been snapped up earlier in the draft, as he has some exceptional talent.

Kevin Sheehan says: “Tall forward with outstanding agility for his size. Very poised with his disposal by hand or foot and can play at either end of the ground or through the midfield. Has good game sense and natural pace. Is eligible for father/son to Collingwood, where father Craig played. Represented Vic Metro in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with his best game vs TAS gaining 23 possessions including 15 contested and six marks. Graduate of the AIS-AFL Academy.”

PICK 79 – Geelong: JARROD LIENERT

Height: 191cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 5/8/1994

Recruited from: Sturt

Lienert is a third tall defender who has really impressed at U/18’s level in South Australia.

Geelong would get a bit of a bargain here. He can play on most forwards, and offers really good rebounding, but reads the play well and can take a grab. I think the fact he started off as a forward really helped him.

He only played the one game in the National Champs, so he doesn’t have a whole heap of exposed form, but he played pretty well in that one against Northern Territory.

Pick 82. Collingwood. Nick Newman
Born: 15/01/1993
Height: 186cm
Weight: 76kg
From: Mornington
Club: Dandenong Stingrays

Collingwood have spoken to Newman and reckon his got the talent if he works hard enough. A prospect forward who could add a rotation to the midfield. Works hard.

Sorry - work crisis  :banghead

Essendon will probably pass with this pick but just to keep things interesting -

93. Essendon - Tyler Blake (184cm defender - North Ballarat)

I'm not sure how many people had Blake on their radars coming into the season, but it was his form for Vic Country which turned me into a fan for what its worth. Typically small defenders aren't all that highly sought after come draft day, but I really like Blake and wouldn't hesitate if he were available with a late round pick. He is a nice size for a small defender, perfectly capable of playing on many types of forwards. He is also really composed with ball in hand.

Did anyone take Harley Montgomery with a late pick?
Nope Ramps. The full list of names taken in our phantom draft is listed in the opening post of this thread on page 1.

We only have one pick left to do and that's Stripes.

Have a got another pick after pick 53?

If so then - Harley Montgomery

25. St Kilda - Nathan Hrovat
26. St Kilda - Adam Carter
41. St Kilda - Liam McBean
44. St Kilda - Aidan Corr
77. St Kilda - James Stewart

Quite pleased with that list. It looks like tomorrow night Corr is going to go a lot higher than 44, pick in the teens is possible. Just goes to show plenty of quality players should still be hovering around for our 2nd, 3rd and 4th pick tomorrow night.  :gotigers

Why did Grundy slip so much?

How did we go?
Apart from No.1 pick Whitfield it looks like we got every other one wrong  lol.

My selections for Port missed the mark apart from Mayes ....
7 - Mayes (went at 8 )
30 29. Nick Graham (went at 54)
3130.  Jason Pongracic (overlooked entirely)

Why did Grundy slip so much?

Because most other clubs think like us - getting a good big man is the last piece of the puzzle and not worth the risk/return of developing one yourself from scratch.  Concentrate on building a powerhouse midfield and poach the lone proven ruckman when you need to.  Makes perfect sense to me.

25. St Kilda - Nathan Hrovat (#21 to Footscray)
26. St Kilda - Adam Carter (#59 to West Coast)
41. St Kilda - Liam McBean (#33 to Richmond)
44. St Kilda - Aidan Corr (#14 to GWS)
77. St Kilda - James Stewart (#27 to GWS)

Pretty good run with the picks. Suprised Carter went so late, but having said that Colquhuon wasn't even selected (which was the other player I rated similar to Carter).

which makes using a second rounder on mcbean a baffling decision. Would rather go a rookie option for a long termer rather than a prized 2nd pick and perhaps that Currie bloke with our final pick as insurance for Maric.

McBean at 33 is a good pick, nothing wrong with that. I don't think he would have slipped to our next pick and we have a very very promising big man in our ranks now. Moves well, reads the play, is agile and always looks to put a teammate in a better position with his plays.  :clapping

But can he ruck? Has played back and forward the past 2 years, not ruck? From what Ive read hes a midfielder in a ruckmans body?  Dont mean to hang the bloke, Im just concerned with how this reads at face value

He can ruck, played predominantly in the ruck prior to this year where he was put forward and down back. Once he sorts himself out physically (2.5 years) he'll be a very very solid ruckman for us, able to play forward to high effect and very agile around the ground.
