AFL footballers were asked to leave the MCG in heated scenes during the Boxing Day Test.
Current and former Melbourne footballers had been enjoying a get-together in the legendary Bay 13 but things turned sour late in the day.
A group including high-flyer Jeremy Howe, star full-back James Frawley and their old teammates Jared Rivers and Ricky Petterd soaked up beers and sun during the afternoon.
Howe barracked enthusiastically during the afternoon, generating rancour with some other fans.
Witnesses said they held aloft a long "beer train" made of empty plastic glasses in the period before there was friction with another patron.
That fan became upset after allegedly being hit by a beer mug and remonstrated with Petterd, who recently transferred to Richmond.
They pushed and shoved in heated scenes before security and police moved in about 5pm.
One man was escorted away to be ejected before officials turned their attention to the players.
At one stage, an angry Rivers was separated from another man by security and other patrons as he was led up an aisle.
Moments earlier he had exchanged angry words with the same man.
The group - minus Petterd - was then marched from the ground without further incident.
The witness said he was surprised to see the group sitting in the area.
"Most AFL players don't sit in the old Bay 13 building beer trains," the witness said.
Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney confirmed a group of players was asked to leave. But Mahoney said the players were among a large number of patrons told to get out.

Dean Bailey and Chris Connolly said they'd just like to re-iterate that they had nothing to do with these current and ex-Melbourne players being on the tank. This is normally how they instruct their players to perform ;D.

RICHMOND player Ricky Petterd could be investigated over footage sent to Victoria Police of him allegedly making inappropriate comments about women.
The alleged "vile abuse" is believed to have been recorded on a mobile phone at the MCG during the Boxing Day Test.
A disgusted spectator emailed Richmond Football Club about the "absolutely appalling behaviour".
Police said if an offence had been committed, it would launch an investigation and charges could be laid.
Melbourne players Jeremy Howe and James Frawley - who were also marched from the MCG on Boxing Day - will be asked to explain themselves when the team returns on January 2.
The incident extends a horror period for the club, with allegations Dees officials set out to lose matches in 2009 to improve their draft position.
The AFL is expected to decide by the end of January if any charges should be laid.
After the incident, a fan told the Herald Sun Petterd was held back from attacking a man after he was mocked about his Brooklyn Nets basketball cap by players including Geelong's Jared Rivers.
"They (the players) had obviously been drinking all day but it was someone calling him 'Netty' - because of his hat - that made Petterd really angry and agitated," he said.
"Howe got angry and involved and they both had to be held back by Rivers."
Richmond Football Club president Gary March said last night he was "not interested in talking about it".

In reading some of your rather acidic posts when challenged, I'm not sure WAT that you can speak with any credibility on the topic of abuse. You certainly haven't abused women in the forum but certainly other posters. Isn't that a double standard?

I can't recall an edict that being an AFL player made you something of royalty where we mind our Ps and Qs.
You continue to get stuck into Edwards and hide behind your opinion that he hasn't lived up to standards as a quality AFL player - which is fair enough.
If Petterd has retaliated to a over weight so and so and reacted accordingly - is it really that different to what you do systematically on this forum to certain player (s) and in certain situations when challenged?
People in glasshouses - perhaps they shouldn't walk around in the nude is all I'm saying :thumbsup

So did the people who supposedly recorded what he said send this damning recording to the RFC straight away (read Boxing Day) or after his photo was plastered across the media?
Why did they send it to the RFC and not call security or the police as it happened on the day if you were so offended?
Not condoning nor crucifying until the ALL the facts are out there.
Never ceases to amaze me how things come to light after it is reported in the media that it is footballers who are involved
As I said not condoning but certainly not going to condem until it's been investigated not by the RFC but official channels

you should work on the odd building site and listen in to the very funny very sexist and derogatory jokes about women just about every male participates. but its not just women its everyone and eveything that is fair game so there is no discrimination.

at all footy clubs the mantra is. be seen to do what the dogooders call the right thing in public, even if you dont think or act that way in private. thats your footy club morals and your a fool if you think otherwise. just another incident that does not warrant a mention.

WHAT began as the thrill of watching his cousin play in the Boxing Day Test will end with Melbourne forward Jeremy Howe being forced to explain himself to his club after being ejected from the MCG after a beer-soaked day at the cricket.
Howe and teammates James Frawley and Lynden Dunn are expected to front club leaders early in the new year to outline how they became involved in an embarrassing situation Melbourne can ill afford at the end of a disastrous year.
Howe was asked to leave the MCG by security staff after exchanging words and remonstrating with other fans, spoiling a day that began well as his cousin, Matthew Wade, was keeping wicket for Australia.
It is understood Frawley, Dunn, former Melbourne players Jared Rivers and Ricky Petterd and a group of other friends decided to leave when Howe was asked to leave late in the afternoon.
Earlier, the players had held aloft a long train of empty plastic beer cups.
Melbourne players are on leave but the club expects Howe, Frawley and Dunn to be asked to explain themselves, either to the player leadership group or to management. There is a chance the trio could be sanctioned.
There could also be recriminations at two other clubs, as Rivers was traded to Geelong in October, while Richmond recruited Petterd in this month's rookie draft.
Police and security staff ejected 73 people from the MCG on Boxing Day, and nine were fined. Howe was not fined. An AFL spokesman said the league would not take any action.

A witness to the fracas that ended with a group of Melbourne Football Club players being kicked out of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG has said that the actions of security staff on the day were "overkill".
The crowd member was sitting two rows behind footballers Jeremy Howe, James Frawley and Lynden Dunn and a group of friends on December 26 and witnessed a verbal altercation between Howe and an unknown man, which resulted in both men being escorted from the ground.
The club has since issued a "please explain" to the players, who are expected to speak to to either the player leadership group or management early next year.

The witness, who asked not to be named, told Fairfax Media that the group was "very vocal" and boisterous but trouble-free before Howe and the unknown man exchanged heated words for about five minutes. Four security guards then told both men to leave.
"It was an unnecessary show of security guards and police when, really, nothing actually happened. That was the most disappointing thing for me," the witness said.
"I was at the Boxing Day Test four years ago and there wasn't the presence of security that there was this year. It's been over-regulated."
He said the remainder of the group were then forced by security to leave, contradicting earlier reports that the remainder of the group left on their own terms following Howe's departure.
"There were four security that stood in front of the rest of the guys and told them to leave. They [the rest of the group] just sat there for a little bit, bemused, and asked why. They were told if you don't leave, we'll get the cops.
"Apart from the two that were yelling, everybody else had their hands up and were separating them and calming the situation down."
The witness said the players had been drinking during the match and took part in handling a giant "cup snake", made up of hundreds of empty beer cups that went around the crowd.
Former Melbourne players Ricky Petterd and Jared Rivers were also part of the group and are understood to have left when Howe was asked to leave by security staff.
Rivers was traded to Geelong in October and Petterd was recruited by Richmond in this month's rookie draft.
Petterd reportedly could be investigated by police over footage of him allegedly making inappropriate comments about women.
A Richmond spokesman has rebutted the allegation.
"Ricky Petterd emphatically denies allegations that he made inappropriate comments about women at the Boxing Day Test," he said.
"He will fully cooperate should police choose to investigate the allegations."
Melbourne Cricket Club communications manager Shane Brown said management supported security staff and their decision to eject the players.
"We support the actions taken thus far by our security personnel, and Victoria Police, to ensure patrons have a comfortable and enjoyable day at the cricket."
He declined the reveal how many security staff were working on the day but added there had not been an increase compared to previous years.
David Nadel, a lecturer at Monash University's National Centre for Australian Studies, said the intense scrutiny of AFL players' behaviour, particularly during the off-season, was unwarranted. He said the increasing micromanagement of players, many of them still teenagers, was getting "silly".
"This is a period of about eight weeks where the players are not on duty for their clubs. That doesn't mean they should be drink-driving or taking drugs, but it can be argued they are not being allowed to behave like young men, which is what they are," he said.
"Players getting drunk at the cricket would not have been remotely surprising 50 years ago."
Dr Nadel said the use and access to social media and cameras meant players were being monitored more than ever before.
"There is an assumption that if you sign up to be a footballer, you sign up to be a celebrity and be watched. There's a small amount, yes, that like that, but most just want to play football and they don't want to be treated any differently," he said.
Police and security staff ejected 73 people from the MCG on Boxing Day, and nine were fined. None of the Melbourne footballers were fined.
The Melbourne players are currently on leave, with the first due to return on Wednesday and the rest back by January 7. An AFL spokesman said the league would not take any action against the players.

Pretty much my thinking too MM. I'm a strong believer in equal rights but for it to be fair and just, equal must be equal. When women are prepared to hand over 'ownership' of their sacred genetic driven rights then I will fly the flag for them to own ours, until then................fo, let genders do what their DNA tells them - be man and woman. Both are good and both are bad, both are right and both are wrong, but one is not the other. Our world is f'ed up enough without confusing our precious kids with gender 'greyness'!

Women's tennis on average rates higher. The men's finals especially the Djokovic, Nadal, Federer classics get higher ratings but across a tournament like the Aussie Open the women's garners more ratings.

RICHMOND forward Ricky Petterd has escaped club sanction for clashing with cricket patrons during the Boxing Day Test at the MCG last month.
Petterd was with four former Melbourne teammates who were evicted late in the day after some ugly exchanges with fans in the rowdy Bay 13 section of the ground.
After meeting with Petterd, the Tigers yesterday confirmed the goalkicker would not be punished.
The rest of the group, featuring Dees trio Jeremy Howe (pictured above left), Lynden Dunn and James Frawley (left) and Geelong recruit Jared Rivers are also expected to avoid heavy penalty.
Melbourne and Geelong are set to formalise their decisions later in the week.
The Melbourne players resumed training at Casey Fields yesterday.

I've just read this thread from start to finish hoping for some form of entertainment. In the end it was like watching every episode of "Lost" back to back with WAT as the Smoke Monster appearing every so often to troll and and generally irritate. That's 20 minutes of my life I will never get back. :banghead
In all honestly, this story shouldn't have seen the light of day. If only someone had photographed a woman nursing a toddler in the crowd. ::)
