Title: 2013 Brownlow Thread
Post by: one-eyed on August 07, 2013, 02:26:55 PM
RICHMOND: Trent Cotchin

While he didn't reach his high standards during the first half of the season, captain Trent Cotchin has been building form and could be the Tigers' leading vote-winner. Equal second in the Brownlow Medal last year with 26 votes, he has played 17 games and averaged 26.9 possessions in 2013. Brett Deledio has been hot and cold this year, either taking the game by the scruff of the neck or being tagged out of the contest. Likewise, Dustin Martin has played some superb games but is not expected to poll consistently. Expect the evenness of Richmond's midfield to be reflected in votes also being shared among Brandon Ellis, Daniel Jackson and Reece Conca. - Nathan Schmook

I'd doubt we have a player that polls more than 14 or 15 votes this year but as a club we will probably be in the top 5 for votes.
Nice even spread - perfect.

I see the Coleman Medal race the same. The fact that we are kicking more goals but with less input/reliance on Jack is the reason the opposition are finding us so difficult to shut down this season as opposed to last. Cotch output is down on last season for many reasons but the midfield is stronger. I'll take that  :thumbsup

Brownlow predictor: We tip your team's contenders
afl.com.au
Sunday, September 22, 2013

RICHMOND

Predicted most votes: Powerful midfielder Dustin Martin, who might well be on his way out of the club, is our pick to lead the Tigers' Brownlow charge. Our reporters voted him best on ground in rounds three (10-goal win over the Western Bulldogs), seven (win over Port Adelaide), 13 (another thumping victory over the Dogs) and 22 (big win over Greater Western Sydney).

Consider: Tigers' skipper Trent Cotchin and vice-captain Brett Deledio should both poll a reasonable number of votes. Cotchin polled 26 votes last year, which would have been enough to win the medal in most seasons. Instead, he finished equal second, four behind Essendon's Jobe Watson.

Roughie: Brandon Ellis enjoyed a very impressive second season at the highest level, regularly topping 20 possessions.

Ineligible: Shane Edwards, Steven Morris

Started the season well until injuring his knee and finished well. Agree his middle part of the year was average by his standards. Imagine if Cotch had had a ripper of a year. He would've romped it in.

Brownlow special: If you don't mind, umpire!

    Sam Landsberger, Mark Hayes
    From: Herald Sun
    September 24, 2013

UMPS DON’T CARE WHERE IT GOES
Shaun Grigg’s 21-disposal effort against the Dogs didn’t even get the former Blue a mention in the match report. Fair enough, you’d argue, given it included six clangers. So how on earth did he poll the three votes? And where was Ryan Griffen? The star Dog failed to poll despite a 38-disposal effort where he collected a game-high 143 SuperCoach points. It summed up Griffen’s night, who was forced to wait until Round 7 to earn recognition from the umpires.

GAZ CONQUERED BUT STILL REWARDED
THE umpires must have been mesmerised by the Dan Jackson-Gary Ablett match-up in Round 16. Despite the Tiger tagger claiming an impressive victory _ and deservingly pocketing maximum votes _ the men in colours still couldn’t leave out little Gaz. The Gold Coast champion pocketed one despite being ``held’’ to 26 disposals and no goals.

NUMBERS MAN
Trent Cotchin leapt to prominence in 2012 with his joint runner-up finish, but not many gave him much hope of being prominent again this year. But after three rounds, the Richmond skipper, who clearly gives minimal lip to the umps, was the leader with eight of a possible nine votes after the Tigers’ trifecta of wins to open the season.

Ablett wins by one vote.

in a side where he basically has no competition and where he basically gets all the 3s. what a joke.

He deserved to win cannot dispute that

But how he continues to poll votes in games where is actually beaten (rarely) by an opponent is an indictment on the umpires

He got 1 vote against us and Jacko (his direct opponent) got the 3 votes. Jacko beat him on the day. So how does that work exactly  :-\

Then you go to our game against Freo in Perth (the lost by a point game) and not one Tiger gets a vote? Were we at the same game umpires

Brownlow don't have nothing to do with being the best man in a team. Its counted on the 3 top players from over 40+ players. Winning only 8 games for the year just shows how great a player Ablett Jnr really is. Being able to take votes against a winning side is a great effort.

i personally think Swan is a breath of fresh air.

Love watching his attitude especially on brownlow night

Its an award that ranks very low in my eyes since its being judged by a group of men who can hardly umpire a game let alone judge best afield.

As I understand it, the umpires check stats etc. after a game then make their decisions.

If we had won by one point, would we have had 3 players get votes? 1 player? Do the umpires take the result into consideration?

Has there ever been a game which the winning side didn't have a vote getter?

Just goes to show,The Umps have no idea or are instructed to give votes to those players who are in the top echelon of the comp for the sake of the image of the AFL.
Jackson should have been our leading vote getter by a country mile. And Crowley would have the leading votes overall.

I thought Jackson was being overrated by our supporters and the media in the first half of the season, was pretty average, in the 2nd half of the season he started resembling a footballer. On the other side of the coin, Martin, Lids and Cotch's performances were underrated as we expect so much from them

I liked the fact he showed some emotion about it for a change. I never bought his "i dont give a stuff" attitude when he won his brownlow and in general when talking footy. Used to try a bit too hard to give off that persona

l like Dane Swan. thought he should have got votes in games where he never did. That's umpires who don't know what they are doing, be it controlling the game or giving votes. Umpires were the worst ever this year. so many out of bounds & wrong decisions. They should be all sent back to learn the game & keep up with it. Learn to overrule each other. Video review & when they decide to use its a freakin disgrace.

Aaron Edwards must be the smallest '3rd tall' ever to play ? Looks like a midget next to Dusty in that pic.

Here's a good stat from last night. Cotchin polled 8 of a possible 9 votes in the first three games following on from 11 of a possible 12 votes in the last four games of 2012. So that's 7 straight games with Cotchin polling 19 of a possible 21 votes. 5 BOGs and 2 second best ons. Unbelievable form streak.

The number of Brownlows is irrelevant. Just as how many premierships they've played in is.

It's a question of who would be a better player in the Tigers side.

With the loss of Tuck (inside mid), Selwood would be the perfect replacement. Also the fact he has more years left than Ablett make Selwood my choice

Ablett

Don't be fooled by the cheap handballs he gets at the back as the same goes for swan, lids, etc etc

His an absolute gun and a modest one at that

Agree with WP though brownlows aren't worth a pinch of poo in my eyes.
