Title: Rd 23: Richmond -v- Essendon
Post by: WilliamPowell on August 15, 2013, 11:08:51 AM
Just a heads up

Tickets for this game went on sale yesterday morning

I purchased reserved seats around 9.30am yesterday for level 2 in the Ponsford Stand and they were selling fast, with a couple of bays already sold out

Reserved seats on level 2 of the Olympic Stand have already sold out

Keeping in mind the problems that arose last year for the Dreamtime game when it was the Bumblings home game would encourage folks looking to get reserved seats to do so ASAP

 :thumbsup

This may also be the last time they play in the AFL for some time if they continue their 'all or nothing' approach.

Is this expected to sell out or something?

Problem is there are less reserved seats available because all EFC members have a reserve seat as part of the their membership

Reduce the amount of premium reserve seats available to RFC supporters

Will plenty of seating (GA) available top levels of all stands

Can't wait for this game I hate essendon more than hawthorn, well nearly. To beat them would be fantastic.
My 9 year old daughter calls them the vomits, which started when she was about 4 and made me laugh ever since.

 :gotigers

I don't know if we could get in the top four, so to knock the vomits out would be extremely special.  :cheers

This aint about those cheating scumbags its about supporting my footy club just like I do for other away games. I am happy to sit with fellow RFC fans and give those drug cheats a serve.
Must win game for top 4 if top 4 is out of reach must win game anyway. :thumbsup

I'm not sure but I reckon I went to hidden valley around 12pm one friday for a pee & a beer last year.
It was standing room only and after I was finished there was rousing applause and wistling. I thought gee these guys really celebrate you after a pee.
...Then I saw this Sheila on the platform twurking to the latest Pink diddy.
Ive got the feeling that the weekend must start @ 12pm Friday in Darwin.   :cheers

I gave the performer a 7.5 out of 10 for technique, showmanship & overall choreography.  ;D

there are only two important questions to this game. 1) will we win? and 2) will you as a supporter of the RFC do the right thing and sledge and chant cheats at the cheats during the gam?

It's a shame really. We will slap that useless club silly and those stuffwit fans of theirs deserve pay back for what the poo they dished out to our fans. But those softies won't be there.

I remember them carrying on at Dreamtime last year and then come round 22 feeling sorry for those pricks because they were so bad. Then this year they carry on again. Chanting that our season was over. Payback will be gold.

people are spewing about losing last week because it was carlton.
Im spewing because it means we miss the opportunity for the double chance and  to play a side we have matched up well against in recent times, first week of the finals.

I'm glad Simon Goodwin is coaching.
I'm also hoping Essendon played their GF last week as well.
I think they'll come out and try to make the point that they deserve to be in the eight on performance. Should be careful here...

I agree.
They will either come out breathing fire to prove they are worthy or it will be token resistance that will be snuffed out quickly and result in another handy percentage booster for us.
Given that Jimmy their golden child won't be coaching I am hoping the lets get this over with attitude may prevail and provide us with some handy match practice for week 1 of finals.

Going to be a really difficult match. Either Essendon will come out with all guns blazing or will produce a really limp effort. Would prefer a hard match to get us prepared for finals

Preview: Bombers v Tigers
By David Schout
afl.com.au
Wednesday, August 28, 2013

SUMMARY

After one of the most turbulent off-field weeks in the game’s history, Essendon will get their final chance to let their football do the talking on Saturday night against the Tigers. Last week’s stirring comeback win over Carlton showed the spirit missing from a torrid four-week run of losses. For the Tigers, Damien Hardwick will want to gather some momentum before week one of the finals – their first September appearance since 2001. Last Sunday’s demolition of GWS was vastly different from the atmosphere they will be thrown into in the coming weeks and the Tigers should benefit from a tougher hit-out.

Cotchin expecting fired-up Bombers

By Matt Thompson
afl.com.au
12:23pm AEST Wednesday, August 28, 2013

RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin still expects Essendon to be fired up for Saturday night's unprecedented 'dead rubber'.

The AFL's decision to ban the Bombers from the finals over their controversial supplements regime means the game effectively doesn't count for them.

On the flip-side the Tigers, currently in fifth place ahead of Collingwood, have plenty to play for with momentum vital going into their first finals campaign since 2001.

"They're going to come out with something to prove," Cotchin told AFL.com.au.

"We have no doubt that they're going to come out firing and we need to make sure that we're on our game and play four quarters of consistent footy that's going to help us build into playing our best footy in finals."

But Cotchin admitted the AFL Commission's ruling does give the round 23 match a sense of unpredictability.

"Depending on how they [Essendon] react to what's happened this week who's to know," Cotchin said.

"I think what we've seen this year is the more and more they've been in the media the better they've performed and the pressure's been on.

"It's been a massive process .. and it'd be hard for anyone and whoever is in this position, whether it's a coach, medical staff or the players.

"I'm just very glad that there's nothing like that that's happened at the Tigers, it's obviously been a really tough period for the whole football club  and its supporters."

Essendon's removal from September action means the Tigers could go from facing interstate side Port Adelaide to arch enemy Carlton in an elimination final, but Cotchin is far from fussed.

"I don't think it matters," Cotchin said.

"We're very excited about the opportunity to play in our first finals series in a number of years, and the guys are just really setting themselves for playing some really good footy."

Essendon beat Richmond by 29 points when the teams met in the 'Dreamtime at the G' clash earlier in the season.

Tigers out to cause more pain

   Rohan Connolly
     The Age
    August 29, 2013

It's fair to say the whole football world is pretty dirty on Essendon right now, but perhaps Richmond more than most, for a couple of good reasons.

First, there's those perennial gags about ''Ninthmond''.

The Tigers have managed to put them to rest this year with 14 wins but, perversely, because of the Bombers' expulsion from the finals, for the only time in football history, ninth would have been good enough.

But on a broader scale, the Essendon scandal has also deprived of oxygen one of the genuine ''feel good'' stories of 2013, namely Richmond's return to finals action after an absence of 12 years, just its third finals campaign since 1982.

That's of far less concern to the Tigers' players than their fans, keen as they are to deliver another blow to Essendon's pride on Saturday night at the MCG.

But Damien Hardwick's side will be pondering just what sort of Bomber line-up it will be confronting. One determined to make a sizeable statement? Or one with the last ounce of emotional energy drained after having been denied a finals spot its victories this year entitled it to?

Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin, understandably, is leaning towards the former view. ''I think what we've seen this year is the more and more they've been in the media the better they've performed and the pressure's been on,'' Cotchin told the AFL website on Wednesday. ''We have no doubt that they're going to come out firing and we need to make sure that we're on our game and play four quarters of consistent footy that's going to help us build into playing our best footy in finals.''

The other unknown for the Tigers is just who they'll be taking on in an elimination final, another issue to which Essendon is central.

Had Essendon been playing finals, a win on Saturday would have locked in a home-state final against Port Adelaide, which Richmond beat by 41 points in Adelaide earlier this season.

As it stands now, the Tigers, should they win, would be almost certain to play either Carlton or North Melbourne, the Roos having dealt Richmond its biggest belting of the season, and the Blues having beaten them only a fortnight ago.

Defeat and a Collingwood victory would still ensure that final against the Power, but that's not the sort of game any finals side should be playing, let alone one as inexperienced in September as this Richmond outfit, only five of its list having played finals previously.

''I don't think it matters [who Richmond plays],'' Cotchin said. ''We're very excited about the opportunity to play in our first finals series in a number of years, and the guys are just really setting themselves for playing some really good footy.''

Arguably the keenest will be former skipper Chris Newman, who now holds the unwanted record of most AFL games (232) without a finals appearance.

The 31-year-old is a 50-50 chance to play against Essendon after missing the past two games with a slight ankle injury. Also in that bracket this week are Luke McGuane, with a knee injury, and David Astbury, who has a quad strain.

But beyond that trio, Richmond's list is healthy and, after a 121-point belting of Greater Western Sydney last week, not short on confidence or depth, the likes of Shane Tuck, Robin Nahas and Sam Lonergan in reserve if needs be.

The Tigers have a 3-5 record this season against other sides in the top eight, having beaten Hawthorn, Fremantle and Port Adelaide. One of the five games in the ''loss'' column was the Dreamtime game in round nine, which the Bombers won by 29 points.

But Richmond has won nine of 12 games since then. Indeed, one more victory will give the Tigers as many wins as they enjoyed in that last finals year in 2001.

And given that they'll be playing the following week, Saturday might at least be one evening when the side with the yellow sash is commanding as much attention as the team with the red one.

It's not a good way to tune up for the finals, that's for sure.  I think I heard one of the commentators calls it, "bruise-free footy".

Tigers are trying to slow the game down most of the time and running out of options to move the ball forward.  I saw Pettard make three leads in a row that were ignored, then he turned his back on the play and just walked back into the 50, while the Bombers got the ball and ran it into their attacking half.  I hope the coach saw that one!

If  we can see it, the crowd can see it, the commentators can see it then it is probable that the opposition can see it when you hold the ball above your head as a signal to slow the play down.

Unfortunately its exactly this type of half arsed football which leads to injury, would not be surprised to see someone go down in the second half as a result.

Laughable isn't it TM. The Bombers have choked every year in the past 5 years. Winning in Perth in round 5 means jack if you crash and burn in the second half of the season every year  ::).

Oh we're from Tigerland
A fighting fury
We're from Tigerland
In any weather you will see us with a grin
Risking head and shin
If we're behind then never mind
We'll fight and fight and win
For we're from Tigerland
We never weaken til the final siren's gone
Like the Tiger of old
We're strong and we're bold
For we're from Tiger
Yellow and Black
We're from Tigerland.

Agreed game lacked intensity from both sides.
We just stepped up in the second half and did what we had to do.

Main thing bar the question mark over Whitey was that we didn't sustain any injuries and it seems we are clear from the aspect of MRP.

Did anybody else think we looked a bit slow/tired?

Wondering if we trained beforehand like we did with Carltank.

Looked to me like the boys were constantly trying to slow the game down, always holding the ball up to say chill out instead of looking for a free man.

Hope they take it easy this week to recoup.

Great to slap them without getting out of neutral. We have a few players who play out of their skins against poo teams like Azza Edwards. Wanted to know how he rated the Dons. 4 through the big sticks says to me "You're poo Essendon"  :shh

Jabba Watson was back to the plodder he was 3 years ago. Brilliant to see.  :clapping

The way the commentators were carrying on about Essendon and ignoring us was annoying Julz but I didn't mind Cotch quietly leading the boys off down into the rooms. It was actually good to see us not making a big deal over making the finals. We've got bigger fish to fry next week.
