With the draft less than a month away, is anyone interested in doing our own phantom draft in the lead up to it?
We've done one over the past couple of years and it was good to read people's thoughts on the various kids and where they might end up. You don't need to think you need to have great knowledge about the kids available. It's just meant to be a bit of fun and there's plenty of resources (I'll post links to them before we start) around to help you out.
Anyway just post here and the club you'd like to take if you're interested. The more the merrier (up to a max. of 18 ) :).

Okay we should get this going soon. So feel free to double up and choose a second team so we can fill every spot :).
-
Melbourne
Let's see if I can rebuild this football club ;)
Not happy giving away Pick 2 ...
-
I'll take Essendon as well
-
I'll take GC as well but if someone else wants to take them who doesn't have a spot then feel free to steal them off me.
-
I'll take Adelaide as well
-
Bugger I wanted Brisbane.

You're right tigs. We had your name in the wrong spot.
So the 3 left are now Freo, Geelong and North.
-
I wont be taking any team I will only be providing special comments especially on the selections made by the Richmond recruiter.
-
:lol
-
:lol
why you laughing. I will be providing the most analytical coverage youve ever seen of the OER phantom draft. ;D
-
give me one of the 3 left anyone will do.
-
Claw, given your knowledge of WA kids over the years, I've given you Freo if that's okay.
I wont be taking any team I will only be providing special comments especially on the selections made by the Richmond recruiter.
No criticism unless you've got your own team ;D.
C'mon Ramps - Geelong or North?
-
OK against my better judgement I will take on our most loved rivals - NORF ;D
-
Good stuff ;D :thumbsup
Okay just one left to anyone who wants it - Geelong.
-
OK against my better judgement I will take on our most loved minnows - NORF ;D

obviously NOrf take McDonald so I wont have to take part in this fiasco until maybe 2018 when my next selection comes up ;D

Sweet job. As it turns out the club folds in 2017 so youre all doneski. :clapping
-
I'll take the Cats so we can now get this show on the Road. :thumbsup
Lock GWS in for Tom Boyd Pick 1 and James Aish Pick 2. No need to elaborate as they are the best two options by far and they will add depth to our
already incredibly talented pool of youngsters. Boyd will cover for the injury prone Patton and Aish will fill the void created by Dom Tyson's departure. :clapping

Pick 3 - 'Aints select Josh Kelly
We have weaknesses all over the ground at the 'Aints, the stars are getting old and the kids are rubbish.
I'm not going to reach for a KP or ruck, i'll take best available and start the midfield rebuild.

Pick 4 - Christian Salem
Sandringham Dragons
Ht:183cm
Wt: 82kg
DOB: 15/7/95
With GWS snapping up our first choice in Aish and needing more mid-filed strength and skill. Bulldogs select Christian Salem. With a build ready for AFL footy the Bulldogs believe Salem will complement they already emerging mid-field brigade.
*** better write up to come ****
-
Next up is pick 5 Gold Coast and tigs2011 :thumbsup
-
Pick #5 - Gold Coast - Matthew Scharenberg - 190cm/87kg - Utility
Was weighing up between he and Salem but WP made that choice easy. Write up to come.
-
Wow Salem going at 4 and if passed on would have gone at 5. There is a lot of love out there for this kid making it highly unlikely he will get to 12 if the clubs above us go for best available rather than focusing on filling a need.

i had one I rated higher but I thought Salem/Scharenberg better fit and it was close. Very even outside Boyd. All personal preference.
-
Pick 6 next ...
:)
-
6. Jack Billings (Collingwood)
Height: 183 cm
Weight: 78 kg
Position: Forward/Midfielder
It won't happen in the real draft but the Pies would happily swoop on Billings if he fell to pick 6. An almost straight younger replacement for Dale Thomas.
Write-up later.

Pick #7 - Brisbane - Dom Sheed.
-
Should I wait until Pick 8 has been stated?
IF NOT ...
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Marcus Bontempelli
Northern Knights
Position: Midfield
Age: 17
Ht: 192cm
Wt: 83kg
Marcus Bontempelli selection helps the build towards the future. Bontempelli's class and long left-foot kick will accomping the midfield nicely with Tyson, Vince, Michie and Cross joining this year. Adding to the young midfield containing Viney, Toumpas, McKenzie and Captain Trengove. Short term pain for Melbourne with it's "depth" still young players, however with persistance, should develop a very strong midfield. Focusing on improving entries into the forward 50.
Roos is wanting a taller midfield hinting Watts in there, Bontempelli would fit nicely. Grimes, Jones and Blease to add in midfield too.
-
Should I wait until Pick 8 has been stated?
no just go.
-
not sure whats going on but did i get a gig. if not no worries.

Someone that's got two give one to Barron Von claw

-
Pick #5 - Gold Coast - Matthew Scharenberg - 190cm/87kg - Utility
Was weighing up between he and Salem but WP made that choice easy. Write up to come.

10. Collingwood - Kade Kolodnashnij
Not sure of his exact size as the AFL website has him 190cm/81kg whereas other sites have him at 188cm/76kg.
Rebounding defender/wingman who reads the play well, good in the air and is an excellent disposer of the footy. He averaged 27 disposals in his five U18 matches. He’s also an excellent run and carry footballer. At this stage mainly an outside player. Pies would see him eventually filling the role left by Heath Shaw or in the future replacing Harry O.

Update:
1. Greater Western Sydney - Tom Boyd
2. Greater Western Sydney - James Aish
3. St Kilda - Josh Kelly
4. Western Bulldogs - Christian Salem

Next up is Bents
11. West Coast
-
Dayle Garlett
AFL.com:
Garlett is a medium forward with a dynamic left foot which he uses well, both around goals and in setting up the play. He has the ability to find space consistently and excels at stoppages. He was an All Australian at Under 18s level in 2012 and has put himself firmly back into draft contention with an excellent senior year with Swan Districts, kicking 48 goals.

Pick 12 Richmond: Nathan Freeman
(http://www.scpaige.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Nathan-Freeman.jpg)
Elite pace and endurance, uses it well on the outside and is a clearance specialist. Shores up the midfield and gives us more flexibility in our rotations by allowing us to push Lids back and fwd as required. Is ready to go from round 1, is a strong unit and will only improve on his already impressive afl ready assets. His inside ability will help out Cotch, Conca Foley and Vlas. His outside dash will also catch teams out as they focus on his more illustrious teammates. Im big fan of linebreakers whether it be with penetrating kicking or dash so I really rate him.
Was a close call between Freeman and Lennon but went with Freeman bc imo he will be the more damaging player, and I don't know how good a mid Lennon will end up becoming.

-
Jeepers I slayed that draft. 3 blokes undrafted and 1 playing SANFL ressies. :lol
Exactly the reason why you pick best available and not reach for needs.
-
Garlett at 10?
Surely you are taking a fairly liberal amount of pee there?
Are you going to re-draft JON with their 2nd rounder?
-
Next up is Andyy with pick 13 for Carlton
-
Garlett at 10?

Kind of takes the authenticity out of it doesn't it?
-
Geez TFT/Loui sent us down the river with Stringer, Broomhead and Nelson ;D
-
Kicked 50 in wafl as a 19 yoa
I am quite happy to step down from my Eagle duties if so voted by the community. Authenticity is very important, after all.
No doubt Tony Mont would do a sterling job
-
Snip! Insults in a foreign language won't be tolerated :banghead
Now back to the phantom draft!
how can greek language put into english lettering be a foreign language. greek provides the basis for half the english language. its like when 65 uses big words I cant understand its still english but he doesnt get edited. ;D

greek provides the basis for half the english language.
No it doesn't. The majority of words in the English language are from Latin and the grammar and structure is almost entirely Germanic. English is a proto indo european language. The majority of Greek isn't even indo european.

No Bents you own it. Just don't take Matt Thomas for your next selection then we will know you're taking the pee.

I think you all find a shyteload of English original from greek

Check out the Big Brain on Braaad! ;D
Bent's I think you will find that dwaino is correct. Unless you are talking about the medical dictionary. You will find a heap of Greek derivatives in there. I reckon French derivatives are up there and possibly even ahead of the Greeks in General english.

Can we actually stick to the topic which is the Phantom draft rather lessons in languages
As I psoted earlier next up is Andyy with Carton's pick 13
If we don't hear from Andyy in the next couple of hours we'll make the selection on his behalf to keep this draft moving

Carlton - Cameron McCarthy
Bit of a strange choice given the talent still available (IE Lennon etc), but Carltank has been in obvious need of KPF's for years and I intend to address this in the draft. Given the lack of genuinely talented KPF's this year I'll use the first pick on McCarthy and hope to jag a midfielder or two for development in later rounds.
-
CAMERON MCCARTHY
(http://www.scpaige.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Cameron-McCarthy1.jpg)
Height: 195cm
Weight: 89kg
Team/Club: WA/South Fremantle
Position: Half Forward
Player Comparison: Justin Westhoff
Draft Range: 20-40
Cameron McCarthy is an interesting story. Only relatively new to football, McCarthy starting taking footy seriously this year and in that period announced himself as a serious natural talent, who’s marking capabilities, vertical leap, athleticism, nous below his knees and an incredible sound set shot and deadly kick for goal were traits associated with all the makings of an AFL star. McCarthy came from the clouds to impress on the big stage, and in doing so kicked that famous winning goal after the final siren, and the week later unfortunately fractured his leg just below his knee and dislocated his ankle, after landing awkwardly in a marking contest. However, the injury will not do his draft chances much harm, with an impressive championships already under his belt, strong performances as Colts level in WA, All Australian slection and to top it off, will also be ready and fit for the draft combine in November. McCarthy stands out on field, and that’s not because of his long mop of hair that requires a headband, he demands the ball, he’s got some pace off the mark, he brings others into the game, and can be relied upon to kick multiple goals. He’s a beautiful size for the modern day game, and brings with him a bit of x-factor and a little bit of excitement in his game. McCarthy’s pressure football is also a big tick in the recruiting handbook; he runs, chases and harasses the opposition, another trait rare for big blokes, but he does it with ease, and puts pressure on the ball carrier which was very impressive to watch.
Quote
“When he was injured and lying on the table after the game, he was asking when he would be able to get back and play football. That’s testament to the boy he is. He’s really blossomed in the WA program and we’re really pleased with the way he’s progressed.”
- Raff Guadagnino, Western Australia’s talent manager.
Strengths
Huge amount of natural ability, contested marking, brilliant in the air, very good above his head and below his knees, sound kicking technique on goal, brilliant mark, rarely misses from a set shot, super athletic and has the ability to dominate games. Showed ability to be calm under pressure when he kicked for goal after the siren to hand WA the win against Vic County. Composed, and knows his strengths, will fly at anything, can pick the ball off the ground and snap over his shoulder, adds x-factor to a forward line.
Weaknesses
Still very much an unknown prospect is McCarthy. He only started taking his football seriously this year, and his natural ability and athetlicism is a fantastic base considering he’s never done a full preseason or any weight training. Still needs to learn his running patterns and leading in the forward 50, but considering he’s got a huge leap, great hands, is clean at ground level and knows how to finish on goal there is a huge amount of upside, and a prospect who could dominate the league in a few years time.
National Championships Stats
Round 2 – 16 disposals, 8 marks and 2 goals.
Round 4 - 12 disposals 3 marks and goals
Averaged 2.4 goals and 5 marks a game in the National Championships

Selection #14 - Ben Lennon - Northern Knights
Position:Medium forward
Height:188cm
Weight:77kg
Born:5/7/95
Home club:Northern Knights
(http://www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20Tenant/Media/Images/293214-tlsnewsportrait.jpg)
The GWS Giants are absolutely wrapt that Ben made it to selection 14. He is a very athletic medium forward with an elite kick and thrives on contested footy.
He will compliment our key forwards and may also develop into a very potent attacking midfielder.
-
Sydney - Selection #15 - Lewis Taylor
Swans have plenty of height and strength so are now looking to bolster their pace and midfield:
Club: Geelong Falcons
D.O.B.: 17.2.1995
Height: 173cm
Weight: 73kg
What you get with Lewis Taylor, is the ultimate package – barring his height! Taylor’s football is reminisce of Brent Harvey, in that Taylor wins a truck load of the ball on the inside, yet is powerful, quick and classy enough to break away from opponents, dart off and use the ball truly by foot. He is a perfectly balanced midfielder who covers the ground well and penetrates with his kick. Taylor has a terrific sidestep, an knows how to read the play and quite often plays the games on his own terms. A prolific ball winner who will inject class, speed and hardness into any side, Taylor is AFL ready to go in 2014. The other factor for Taylor, is that Michael Turner has that he Taylor is the best player to have ever come out of the Geelong Falcons in 15 years. The Swans could do with an injection of speed into what is otherwise a one-paced midfield, and Taylor offers the ability to play an inside and outside role and has the aerobic capacity to become a focal point of the Sydney midfield.
-
Next up is tiga with pick 16 for Geelong
Then for the remainder of round 1 we have:
17. Fremantle - claw
18. St Kilda - wayne
19. St Kilda - wayne
End of first round compensation picks
20. Gold Coast - tigs2011
-
Selection #16 - Billy Hartung - Dandenong Stingrays
Position:Small midfielder/defender/forward
Height:177cm
Weight:75kg
Born:24/1/95
Home club:Dandenong Stingrays
(http://www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20Tenant/Media/Images/293198-tlsnewsportrait.jpg)
The Geelong Football Club are very pleased that we were able to pickup Billy with Selection 16 as we were after another in and under type with elite endurance to add to our midfield stocks.
Billy also has the added bonus of a penetrating kick. There were some questions over his height but he more than makes up for it with speed, stamina and a strong defensive mindset.

claw thinks one of the best five mids and definate top 10 picks in the draft is still available. i hate to turn my nose up at him but alas claw is determined to address some pretty severe tall forward needs and is over the moon to announce jonathon marsh with pick 17. claw feels that this kid will go higher than this in the real thing.
whoops
jonathon marsh 192cm/89kg forward/mid no utility. east fremantle. move over pav your replacement is here. :pray
-
Pies would see him eventually filling the role left by Heath Shaw or in the future replacing Harry O.
hey mt whats the bet they take cameron mccarthy here. pick 6 on best available and pick 10 on greatest need within reason.

If the gun mids are mostly snatched wouldn't mind if RFC takes a punt on McCarthy.

Pick #20 - Gold Coast - Eli Templeton - 182cm/75kg - Midfielder/HBF
One of my absolute favourites in this draft, Templeton is a highly skilled midfielder who can play multiple positions. Templeton seems to have dropped off the radar a bit this year and one of the major knocks on him seems to be that he's only 67kg. Funny thing is, he actually isn't. He's 75kg. No different to Aish, Kelly, Kolodjashnij, Z.Jones and many others that I can't think of off the top of my head. All the articles I've read on him say 3rd rounder and in this draft any club who gets him in the 3rd round has got themselves a bargain. I think he's one of the few players in this draft that could become an A-grader and would be happy with him at Richmond for pick 12.
Strengths: Templeton is one of the cleanest players in this draft pool. He rarely fumbles the footy, even under pressure. He has very, very high skill level by both hand and foot, which are only helped by his excellent decision making. Of all the midfielders in the draft, Templeton has one of the bigger tanks going around having run a 10:05 in the 3km time trial (7th) and reached level 15.3 on the beep test (4th.) This combination of elite endurance and a high skill level and decision making have seen him used primarily in an outside role this year. However, put a few more kgs on him so he can match it with the men and you will end up with a very talented inside/outside midfielder.
Weaknesses: IMO Templeton is a very well-rounded midfielder so there aren't a lot of weaknesses. He's skilful, he runs hard and although maybe lacking a little pace (not sure how he tested?) I don't think this is really a weakness more so that it's not a weapon he possesses. If anything his only real weakness has been his lack of size, though as I've mentioned I see it as a non-issue at a now healthy 75kg.
Why Gold Coast? Pretty much because he's best available. Whilst he's generally considered a pick 25+ I rate him 9th and would take him over Acres, Billings, KK, Kelly and Freeman. So at pick 20 I'm pretty happy with him.

21. Port Adelaide - Trent Dumont
Height: 185cm
Weight: 87kg
DOB: 30/06/1995
Team/Club: South Australia/Norwood/Golden Grove
Position: Midfield/Half-Back
Port is very happy to pick up a talented home-grown midfielder in Dumont. He's already ready-made for senior footy having not only played but played well for premiers Norwood in the SANFL. He's classed as an inside mid where he thrives in the contested footy but he also plays across half-back with his penetrating kick so he is versatile. What is most impressive from my view looking at him as a future AFL player is Dumont is super clean by hand and rarely fumbles which is vital in the AFL where there is less time and space and more pressure. The only knock is he's not super quick but his clean skills and good decision making make up for it.

MT I also seriously looked a Dumont for the Cats but his ability to spread from a contest worried me which is why I went for Hartung.

Dumont looks like he does calculus for fun.
-
looks like brett ratten, another genius
-
Pick #22 - Brisbane - Zac Jones - 181cm/76kg - Def/Mid
Zac is the little brother of Melbourne's Nathan. Shares the same toughness and hardness of Nathan but is more of a defender at the moment and will probably start there before shifting into the midfield for Brisbane.
Jones is a real competitive player and hates to lose 1 on 1 battles which makes for an ideal small defender. For a guy his height he is quite strong in the air and is rarely beaten. Not to dissimilar to how Rory Sloane competes and is rarely beaten.
Whilst his skills aren't elite, he still has good skills and will regularly hit targets.

Pick 23 - Adelaide
Tom Cutler (Oakleigh Chargers)
DOB: 20/02/1995
Ht: 190cm
Wt: 85Kgs
We are surprised that Tom was still available in the 2nd round. He is medium midfielder with good game sense and ability to hit targets consistently by hand or foot. Has great athleticism and as a result can play on talls & smalls. Reads the play well and is a good decsion maker.

Next up is Stripes with pick 24 for Hawthorn
-
Hawthorn is flabbergasted and overly excited that a player of the caliber of Matthew Crouch could slip to us so late in the draft :P
24. Hawthorn - Matthew Crouch (181cm, 80kg midfielder - North Ballarat)
Position: Midfielder
Height: 180cm
Weight: 78kg
Born: 21/4/95
Home club: North Ballarat Rebels
In terms of genuine inside ball winnings midfielders, Matthew Crouch is clearly the best on offer. I would rate him alongside of Oliver Wines, not quite at his brother's level yet though. He is an absolute ball magnet, only having 30 disposals in the TAC Cup would be considered a quiet match for him as he is regularly hitting the 40 mark. Always at the bottom of the packs, Crouch is a natural in winning the contested ball and getting the quick handball out to his teammates. But he also reads the packs well, and can clear the ball himself with his run. A wrist injury meant he missed the first few weeks of the U18 Championships, but he returned in excellent form. And he used his time away to really improve his fitness base, which was one area in which he did need work. The problem is that there are quite a few contested ball winning midfielders in this draft, and a number of them can play effectively in other positions - be it across half forward or half back. And that's where I think Crouch is lacking. For an inside midfielder, he uses the ball well but he isn't particularly damaging and doesn't really impact the scoreboard at all. He'll likely go top ten on draft day, but I see him being a solid rather than spectacular player.

watched a bit of him last yr great endurance good vision makes real good decisions and uses the ball well. whats not to like. size size and size.
if hes 75kg i will go heave.i cant see him putting on enough size to play inside footy at afl level. i cant see him performing any other role at afl level other than an outside role. i think size will always be an issue.
thing is hes played some footy against men and hes gone alright so who knows im probably wrong and letting my aversion to small skinny players get in the way of what attributes they do have.

He was 67kg at the start of the year. Already put on 8kg. Needs to do the same again and he'll be fine. His shoulders are broad enough to handle it IMO. A club will need to be patient with him as I wouldn't recommend putting it all on this pre-season so he will likely start on the outside next year at state level and progress from there. Super talent.

We grab the brother of Jackson. Good little midfielder.
-
Pick #27 - Gold Coast - Jarman Impey - 177cm/78kg - Forward/Utility
A personal favourite of mine and a real excitement machine, Impey is a highly skilled player who can play pretty much anywhere you want him to. Impey is one of those types of players that often goes later in the draft than in hindsight they should have, so whilst I've gone early here at pick 18, I think I'll look back on this selection and be very, very happy with it. He's not your typical small forward as he can play midfield when he's struggling to get a kick as well as a rebounding half back. I don't think this kid gets enough love on here. I always laugh reading some of the drooling over Garlett on BF and other forums. This kid is everything people think Garlett is and then some.
Strengths: Impey is a superb athlete. He has a fantastic combination of speed and agility for when the ball hits the deck. Combine that with his fantastic leap and marking ability and you have the perfect small forward who can get the job done both at ground level and in the air. Those who know of my love of Walters from Freo well this kid is Walters with pace and a better midfield game. His kicking skills, whilst not elite, are still very good and he has a great goal sense.
Weaknesses: There aren't too many weaknesses to Impey's game. I think he could build a bigger endurance base and develop his defensive game further. Whilst he has the midfield game at junior level to overcome it, he can go missing in the forward line as all small forwards do and at AFL level his endurance will be a little way off playing much midfield.
Why Gold Coast? Best available. Also, outside Matera they don't have a small forward and this kid is something special.

Pick #5 - Gold Coast - Matthew Scharenberg - 190cm/87kg - Utility
Scharenberg is a classy utility who could be developed however GC want to. Was SA's best player throughout the Champs playing predominantly as a tall rebounding defender intercepting opposition attacks. Scharenberg has already made his senior SANFL debut in a pretty awful Glenelg side and held his own.
Strengths: Scharenberg is a fantastic size for a HBF at 190cm and is already a solid 87kg, which makes him ready to go for a side in need of a HBF. Scharenberg's main weapon in defence is his ability to read the play and his overhead marking ability which he uses to intercept opposition forward entries to great effect and then uses his high skill level to set up attacks for his own side. Scharenberg is also a highly versatile player and can play up forward and off a wing as well. His athleticism and size would allow him to play a 3rd tall defender role or more a rebounding half back role depending on match-ups.
Weaknesses: One of the criticisms of Scharenberg is that he can be a bit of a jack of all trades and master of none but he is very good in multiple roles and if developed well, he will become an A-grader. Just needs to end up at the right club. Another knock on him is his lack of exposed midfield form but that's just because he's such a good player off half-back IMO.
Why Gold Coast? He was the 2nd best player I had available but suited a much bigger need for GC as they are really lacking for a quality back flanker where as their midfield is already very deep so taking another here didn't seem necessary. If he turns into a midfielder it will just be a bonus for GC.
-
Pick #7 - Brisbane - Dom Sheed - 184cm/83kg - Midfielder
Sheed is the reigning Larke Medal winner despite not playing the last game due to a broken collarbone. Sheed is a talented and competitive ball-winning inside mid who just hates to lose contests. For mine, he's one of the most underrated prospects going around. He is already a very high level player. He wins a heap of the footy and uses it very well. He is another who has senior footy experience having debuted for Subiaco before his injury. Sheed has also shown some versatility where by he has played some footy resting as a forward where he is strong one-on-one and slotted 4 goals against Vic Country.
Strengths: Sheed is one of the best clearance players in this draft and his clearances don't go to waste as he is a very good user of the footy by both hand and foot. He is a very competitive player that hates losing and this shows with the ability he demonstrated up forward. What sets Sheed apart from the other inside midfielders in this draft is his decision making. He wins the ball in tight and doesn't panic, often hitting a teammate up in space by hand or when given the opportunity will hit a target on his trusty left boot. Sheed also has a big tank and can run all day through the midfield and rack up huge numbers. Finally, he is a player of high-character who has the potential to one day captain the club as well as being a ready-made player who could play round 1 next year and I think that is what Brisbane will want with all the players they just lost.
Weaknesses: Despite my high ranking of Sheed he does have his knocks. One is his apparent lack of speed, which I always thought was pretty rubbish and his testing time of just over 3 seconds shows that whilst no speedster, he's also no slouch in the speed department. His other knock is his lack of a right foot, which is a pretty accurate criticism of him but there are many left-footers with no right foot in the AFL and they seem to survive, so I think he will be ok in this regard but he will need to work on it so he doesn't become overly predictable.
Why Brisbane? Best available. Outside Boyd, I have Sheed as the next best prospect. He was absolutely dominant at Champs and has played some good senior footy. Sheed has already moved from Kalgoorlie to Perth to further his footy so the go home factor shouldn't be a real issue, which I think will be part of Brisbane's criteria for this draft. I think Sheed has future captain written all over him for Brisbane.

Pick #25 - Brisbane - Darcy Hourigan - 191cm/92kg - KPF - South Adelaide
Darcy Hourigan is a big-bodied KPF who dominated the U18 Champs for SA as he was just too big and powerful for his opponent. Hourigan has also spent time in the past playing as a KPD and made his debut in the SANFL seniors as a 15yo which is pretty impressive. He is a really big kid and lacks a little height for a KPF role but so did Jack Darling apparently. Whilst he doesn't have Darling's athleticism or endurance he is stronger and better one-on-one for mine.
Strengths: Hourigan is a big unit for an 18 year old kid, so won't take the 3-4 years to bulk him up for AFL. He's very strong and powerful and knows how to use his strength in the contest. One of his biggest assets is his ability to use his body to guard the space and take the contested mark. Hourigan is also a booming left foot kick and can launch goals from well outside 50m. He comes from a basketball background so is very clean, rarely fumbles even at ground level, which is impressive for a kid his size. As a lead-up forward, he is very smart in his leading patterns and despite not being overly quick, he can create separation on his defender and with his big body it's almost impossible for the defender to get around and prevent the mark.
Weaknesses: Hourigan will divide opinion amongst the recruiting fraternity for a few reasons. Firstly his height as he's been listed as any of 190-192cm. Hasn't effected Darling at AFL level and I don't think it will effect Hourigan either. At 92kg already he's not exactly a ball of muscle and is carrying a lot of puppy fat and is also lacking a tank to play as a leading CHF type at the highest level. Therefore, he is going to need a big pre-season or 2 to get himself ready for the demands of AFL.
Why Brisbane? Impey was my best available but Hourigan is a better fit, with Brisbane being so desperate for a KPF they recruited McGuane. I think Hourigan is the last of 3 KPF's capable of kicking 40+ goals a year which is what Brisbane are crying out for. Sure a 60-70 goal a year Boyd would be better but that can't happen now.
-
Clawmeister you can take Norfs next pick as well if you want ;D I actually dont mind if you do, you can just pick one of your WA specials :cheers
na mate have a crack at it your doing well so far lol.
-
Ramps you have your go for North (pick 30) so we can keep this moving along and tiga can fill in his GWS pick later when he logs on :).
-
after spending hundreds of hours pondering this pick, the rampstar after noticing that norfs traded out delaney and has firrito at about 47 years of age on its list selects
Darcy Gardiner from the Geelong Falcons.Darcy is 192cm and 84kgs and will eventually move in to replace the Firrito in the backline. I have no idea if hes any good but I dont give a poo coz he'll be playing for Norf and they wont be around in 5 years and if hes any good by then he'll come to Richmond anyway. ;D

Wcr confidence about the midfield unit has increased dramiti adding Cripps and garlett to a group already containing the like of shuey masten and nicnat
Patrick Cripps
Height: 192cm, Weight: 90kg, DOB: 18/03/1995
Club: East Fremantle (WA)
Strengths
Inside Game – Patrick is one of the best inside players in the draft and probably ranks second behind Crouch for mine as far as pure clearance winners are concerned. His hands in close are exceptional, he is very clean, he reads the ball well and makes excellent quick decisions. He also has the strength and size at 188cm to stand up in tackles, absorb hits and lay tackles. I think he has the capabilities to be an above average clearance player and part of a strong midfield group going forward.
Strength/power – Cripps looks to be pretty strong already, he is a very good size for an inside mid at 192cm and 90kg and seems to have a fair bit of power. He appears be quite quick off the mark and has a good initial burst (not elite but more power in that he can break tackles). I think he will develop into a powerful inside mid along the lines of David Mundy.
Decision Making/footy smarts – Cripps makes good decisions with ball in hand and has an excellent footy brain imo. He will be the type of player who makes those around him look better as he is excellent at giving the ball to those in better positions than himself in stoppages and makes quick decisions under pressure. He is also getting better at spreading from the contests and his outside game has shown some real improvement throughout the year. He is a natural ball winner and just accumulates possessions with ease.
Marking – Cripps looks to have the potential to develop his marking and is quite a strong mark overhead. He is strong through the core and has very clean hands so this could be a strength in the future, although at the moment he needs to use it more in contests especially now he has grown to 192cm.
Clean Hands – Cripps has very clean hands and rarely fumbles the footy, he is great at finding the ball and keeping his feet in contests.
Weaknesses/Areas of Improvement
Cripps has a kick to handball ratio of roughly 1:1, this limits his hurt factor a bit. Additionally a lot of his clearances are done with handballs not breaking away and kicking the pill forward, although towards the end of the year he was doing this a lot more and taking the game on. He is still reasonably damaging though as he tends to handball to players who are in space and able to make a good decision.
Kicking – Cripps is a slightly above average kick of the footy imo, although certainly not an elite kick by any stretch. He seems to have a good technique and he has definitely improved this year, but he does tend to float the ball a little to much imo, and bombs it to contests instead of hitting up the short option. There is definitely room for improvement but he does hit most of his targets.
Athleticism – Cripps is not a super athlete, but he is not a poor athlete either, probably just your average AFL athlete. He won’t burst out of packs or side step players with ease but that isn’t his game. Endurance wise though I think he needs to improve, he registered a 13.2 Beep test which needs improvement before he plays regular AFL footy.
Outside Game – Once again this area has really improved throughout the year but I still think that it is not a true strength of his and there is still some improvement left. Cripps spreads reasonably well from the contest and works hard but he is not super damaging with his outside play given that he doesn’t run with the ball much and he doesn't have elite disposal
Versatility – At this stage Cripps doesn’t have much versatility and only really plays as an inside player to a high standard. He could do with really developing his outside game and in particular his forward play as he has shown an ability to push forward and kick goals at Colts level. This would take his game to the next level.

Pick 32. Sydney - Matt Fuller
Position: Medium defender
Height: 180cm
Weight: 84kg
Born: 1/6/90
Home club: Norwood
Sydney are looking to replace Marty Mattner and see a ready to go replacement in Matt Fuller.
As many as six AFL clubs are interested in the Adelaide-based sales rep who is an exceptional kick on both sides of his body. The natural left-footer was one of Norwood's most important in securing back-to-back SANFL premierships. Fuller, 23, reads the play well and has strong hands and was so often the driving force behind the side's attack this season. He drifted forward to boot seven goals including a 60m bomb in the grand final.

Pies would see him eventually filling the role left by Heath Shaw or in the future replacing Harry O.
hey mt whats the bet they take cameron mccarthy here. pick 6 on best available and pick 10 on greatest need within reason.
Having grabbed Jesse White, I don't see the Pies drafting another key forward. If anything their KPP weakness in 2014 will be in lack of key defenders and needing Harry O or Maxwell to play on a tall. I'm guessing Darcy Gardiner will be the highest placed young tall defender in the draft but pick 10 is too big a reach for him.
-
Pick 35. Sydney - Ben Cavarra
Position: Small midfielder/defender/forward
Height: 174cm
Weight: 70kg
Born: 20/12/95
Home club: Eastern Ranges
Sydney base their game plan around superior stoppage work and look to add another clearance mid to their list.
The Eastern Ranges captain had a phenomenal 2013 season. He led the Ranges to a premiership, won the Morrish Medal and was best afield in the TAC Cup Grand Final. He is a clearance machine who finds a stack of the football in and under. He is only 173cm but is very brave and simply knows how to get his hands on the ball and distribute. Uses the football well on his preferred left boot.

GWS - Pick #29 - Toby Nankervis
Position:Ruckman
Height:200cm

Born:12.8.94
Home club:North Launceston
(http://www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20Tenant/Media/Images/293153-tlsnewsportrait.jpg)
With the slow progress of Downie and Phillips, we decided to take Toby who we believe is the best ruck in this year's draft.
As with all young ruckman, he will be a long term prospect and be given the opportunity to develop by having Mumford and Giles holding down the ruck duties for at least the next couple of years.
Toby is a very strong and athletic Ruckman with a great vertical leap. He is very strong overhead and is very comfortable in a deep forward role. Toby averaged 18 possessions per game in the Under 18 championships and in one game bagged 5 goals. He was overlooked in last years draft but his improvement in the last 12 months has proven he has the ability to take the next step.

The Geelong Football club is rapt that we were able to pickup Jay with selection 36. His playing style is very much in the mould of Matthew Stokes and in the future we can see him playing a very similar role. Like Matthew, he is very courageous, likes to roam the ground and also likes to move forward and kick goals. He is a strong tackler and has very good awareness and vision.

Miller is a back flanker who reads it well behind the ball and get his share of intercept marks. He’s also an excellent user of the footy as someone who can also by foot generate some real drive from the back half as a precise user of the footy and that extra time he seems to have with ball in hand. He’s also got above average athleticism with good pace but also a nice sidestep on him that makes him hard to tackle.

thanks oe.
cameron conlon is a bit of a risk because of injury. didnt play tac this yr and only 10 or so games in 2012. before his injury though he was one of the most highly rated juniors in the land and would have imo gone top 10 without the injury.
at pick 37 i think it an acceptable risk.
i see him as a key forward rather than a ruckman. if he fulfills his potential freo with him and marsh will have addressed their long term key forward needs in one go imo.

Pumped that this kid is still available this deep into the draft. A tall inside mid who can go forward. Very fit with a beep test score of 14.7 in the combine. Should be a big-bodied bona fide midfielder.

An Essendon NSW Scholarship holder, Clothier is a strong inside midfielder who is a ball magnet and can also play as a bullocking lead-up forward. Packing excellent body strength and work rate, he can run all day, having registered a 14.7 beep test this year. Developed into a very good leader at Calder, while excelling at clearance work. He wins a lot of the footy through sheer competitiveness and is a diligent trainer who would thrive in an AFL environment.

Pick 40 - Melbourne
Michael Apeness (Eastern Ranges)
Position: Ruckman
Age: 18
Ht: 199cm
Wt: 101kg
Melbourne are absolutely rapt to have landed Apeness as we look to find a young ruckman for the future. Aggressive and competitive ruckman who consistently gets his hand to the ball, providing his midfielders with first use. Has strong hands overhead and can be dangerous playing as a tall forward. Comes from a rugby background. Melbourne are very surprised Apeness is still available and have fallen in love with his aggressive and competitiveness around the contests.

Good pick up at no.40 mate
He is! Wouldn't mind Richmond taking him actually!
McBean will be a forward and Vickery will be a forward (80%) and ruckman (20%)
Hampson as Maric's back-up and why not have this player who is an animal/pitbull from reports and footage on our list?
18 years old and has a body of a 21-22 year old ruckman already?

Geelong - Selection #41 - Mitch Harvey
Position:Tall forward
Height:197cm
Weight:95kg
Born:17/8/95
Home club: North Adelaide
(http://www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20Tenant/Media/Images/293127-tlsnewsportrait.jpg)
A really good get at 41. We are amazed that Mitch was still available at this selection. He will be a perfect addition to our tall forward brigade.

Pick 42 - Western Bulldogs
Jake Owen
Calder Cannons
DOB: 11/11/94
Ht: 191cm
Wt: 84 kgs
The inside word
Regarded as one of the best draft prospects from the Calder Cannons this year. Turned himself into a midfielder at 191cm and has a ferocious, borderline reckless attack on the football. Excellent mark for his size and can go forward to great effect, having kicked 18 goals in the TAC Cup. His ability to win the ball in contested situations and release from the stoppages puts his team mates into space regularly. A very talented, versatile player with a great work ethic.
From: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-20/jake-owen
The Bulldogs are confident they've picked up mid who can win his own ball as well as bring team mates into the game but can also rest up forward and kick a few goals

Pick 44. Sydney - Alex Saunders
Sydney are adding to their midfield stocks with another high endurance, skillful mid.
Position: Small midfielder/defender/forward
Height: 180cm
Weight: 70kg
Born: 10/7/95
Home club: Gippsland Power
The half-forward/onballer has speed, is strong overhead, is an elite runner (he runs a 15 beep test) and has a beautiful kick. The indigenous product is also a strong tackler and made big impressions for both Gippsland in the TAC Cup and Vic Country at the National U18 Championships. Saunders has enormous talent and has made great strides in the past 12 months. Makes smart decisions with his disposal while rarely fumbling the ball at ground level. His excellent endurance was highlighted by his 13.4 beep test at the state combine.
-
Pick 45. Port Adelaide - Cameron Giles
Position: Tall defender
Height: 195cm
Weight: 93kg
Club: Woodville-West Torrens (SA)
AFL recruiters will like his rebound and speed out of the backline for a kid of his size. That height enables him to go toe-to-toe with key-position forwards as well as using his speed and agility to run off them. Playing at full-back for SA in the U18 Champs, Giles was pretty much able to keep some of the best key forwards in the carnival quiet. Port will be happy to pick up a home-grown key defender at this pick.

Pick 46 - Adelaide: MALCOLM KARPANY
Woodville - West Torrens
DOB: 1/6/95
Ht: 175cm
Wt: 74kgs
Mainly an outside mid with great literal movement, Malcolm was BOG in this Under 18's SANFL Grand Final. He is a natural footballer who is incredibly quick. Being a local lad was also taken in consideration, no go home factor here
-
Damn you mt >:(
-
After having lost the likes of Cripps, Fuller, Robertson, Thorp, Giles and Karpany to previous selections all players were being considered for this pick Norf is proud to select
Nicholas Burke 187cm and 76kgs. We think Nick will become a very good midfielder in time. At 187cm he has height for a midfielder and at 76kgs he only needs 2 preseasons to get himself to about84/85kgs, he has nice pace and he is a good mark. Nick spent a couple of weeks at Tigerland with Ben Lennon and rumours are the Tigers wanted to take Nicholas at their next pick.
Norf Melbourne will take no further selections in the fiasco of a phantom draft, ;D

GWS - Selection #48 - Orazio Fantasia
Position:Small forward/midfielder
Height:176cm
Weight:65kg
Born:14/9/95
Home club:Norwood
(http://www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20Tenant/Media/Images/293148-tlsnewsportrait.jpg)
GWS have snagged a ripper late pick with Orazio. We were shocked that he was still available at selection 48. We were after a quality small crumbing forward to feed off our tall forwards and we got him. He has excellent balance, good composure and he knows how to kick goals. Once he develops further, we could see him spending some time in the midfield as he has excellent awareness, good leg speed and finds his way through traffic without a problem.
-
Richmond - Selection #50 Dwayne Wilson
Position:Small defender/midfielder/forward
Height:179cm
Weight:74kg
Born:17/1/95
Home club:Sturt
We fill a list need with a player we have comfortably in the top 20 on skill alone. Dwayne is an electric talent that breaks lines, has elite footskills and can kick off both sides. His SANFL under 18 coach Brenton Phillips rates him as the most talented player in (this year's SA under-18) group on pure skill set. His knock is he can drift out of games so needs to work on staying involved longer in those periods when he doesn't have it on a string. This is directly related to his conditioning and work ethic so needs to work harder and get fitter something we feel will happen in an afl environment. Not a true crumbing fwd, more of a Danyle Pearce HF/wing type.

great pick up tm. i tend to steer clear of smalls but if i was taking one it would be around pick 50 onwards and it would be wilson.

Carlton - Pick 51 - Josh Scott
Surprised and very happy Scott is still available so late in the draft. Looks to be a great addition in the F50.

Player Comparison: Brad Sewell
Very strong inside midfielder who can rack up the ball. Excellent clearance player and has the core strength to bust tackles. Best case scenario he could be an excellent inside midfielder at AFL level, but athletically he isn’t good enough to be considered for a top 30 selection. Jansen presents value and he’ll slot perfectly into Sewell’s spot.

Pick 57 - Melbourne
Jake Kolodjashnij (Launceston)
Position: Key Defender
Age: 18
Ht: 192cm

Tall defender with good athleticism and football smarts. Reads the play well and comes off his opponent at the right times to win the ball back in the air. An effective rebounding player who is a strong overhead mark and possesses neat foot skills.

pick 58 geez theres three still there that i like a lot
tossed the coin between james sicily and ben sokal but went with sicily.
bens a 183cm 87kg forward mid. a really strong marking and super strong hard at it player whos very good one on one.im pretty confident someone will pick this kid up come draft day. hes hardly rated a mention but hes exactly the type i tend to look at most.
like a kid in a candy shop the one i will take here is james sicily. at 186cm only 77kg but will fill out so will be a real good size. . real good speed kicks goals, good skills good grab, a little outside runs to the right spots and runs both ways. hes a gem just waiting to be taken.
still i wish i had one more pick.

Selection #66 Richmond
Matthew Sully
(http://www-static2.spulsecdn.net/pics/00/02/44/78/2447837_1_O.jpg)
Position: Tall defender
Height: 196cm
Weight: 95kg
Born: 15/10/92
Home club: Geelong
Big strong shutdown defender who is rarely beaten 1 on 1. Made the VFL team of the year in the pocket. We feel Matthew fills a hole in our list for a big strong shutdown defender that can then help release Chaplin and Rance a little bit to play their more natural games.
That brings richmonds draft participation to a close. Whilst we are happy with who weve landed, we would have loved one more pick. Cant believe James Tsitas is still available and would snap him up in a second with the pick we wasted I mean used on Pettard.
-
Looks like a good pick. Why has he lasted so late in the draft?
:cheers

agree real good mature type. hes exactly the type of defender richmond shoul;d be looking at. i liked laidler as well as a mature defender not sure how he ended up at sydney.
guys like ben ross chris cain mitch thorpe david matt fuller and others all deserve a chance and they all come cheap with lateish nd picks rookie picks or psd. yep im still pushing the state league barrow hard.
