Haw vs Geel - Friday night
Syd vs Freo - Sat. arvo
North vs Ess - Sat. night

Yep, 3 interstate trips in a row if we win next week.
Luke Darcy just said Ch 7 has the official finals fixture for next week and there may be a surprise or two. He's probably bluffing just to make viewers stick around.

Port are crap. Been crap for 10 weeks, tigers by 42
-
So what... 65,000+ RFC members, 50,000+ Port members, and about 50,000 seats available (minus corp seats etc).
So probably two thirds of all the club members will be screwed. Better not be me!
-
I've remained pessimistic throughout the entire winning streak and I don't intend to stop now.
Port by 10 goals.

I only got the team email at 09:00 this morning. luckily I actually know what to do :gotigers

How come Richmond only gets 10000 tickets?
what a joke if true. We'd easily get 25k going over
-
How come Richmond only gets 10000 tickets?
What are you talking about?
No allocation per club in the first 3 weeks, first in best dressed
Only one were there's a set allocation is the GF and 10k sounds about right

Someone told me today our allocation was only 10,000 tickets. I don't know if its true or not just asking that's all.

Booked last night and got return flights for around $500
Same flights today..well the flight home was booked out around 10am this morning
And the flight over is now over $300 ;D
Think I might have scored a bargain :lol
Jon Ralph is saying 10k
Even if it's true and I have my doubts it is unlikely that 10k Tiger fans are going to get to the game. therefore the allocation wont get used by members
With flight costs the way they are, ditto with hotels ... some people just wont be able to afford it

Finals preview: Port Adelaide v Richmond
Liam Mannix
The Age
September 1, 2014
First elimination final
Port Adelaide v Richmond
Sunday, 3.20pm Adelaide Oval
SELECTION TABLE
Half-back Cam O'Shea was omitted from the Power's squad against Fremantle for first-year player Jarman Impey. Impey is a quick, small defender, while O'Shea can play small or on the third tall.
Matt White was subbed off early after appearing to injure a groin, and it's not yet clear whether he will line up on Sunday, but he has already missed three weeks of the season with the same complaint. If he doesn't get up, endurance athlete Kane Mitchell, a coach's favourite despite suspect disposal by foot, may get a guernsey. If he does, the team will be weaker for it – despite Mitchell's desperation, he is clearly the less-damaging player. Defender Tom Logan was best afield in Port Adelaide's reserves game on the weekend and is a chance to play.
Richmond will consider both ruck-forward Ty Vickery, back from suspension, and reigning best-and-fairest Dan Jackson. However, with coach and players both praising the importance of consistency in the Tigers' hot run of late-season form, changes seem unlikely. Reece Conca had an impact after going on as the sub for the quiet Ricky Petterd, so he may get a chance to start next week. Forward David Astbury played three quarters in the VFL last weekend, but with Richmond's reserves out of the finals had no chance to build match fitness. Sam Lloyd, who played well when these teams last met, had 25 disposals and kicked three goals in that VFL match.
2014 MEETINGS
Round 17, July 13, Etihad Stadium. Richmond 19.12 (126) d Port 16. 10 (106)
The first "real" opponent Richmond beat in its late-season form streak. Rookie find Anthony Miles was the Tigers' best. Jack Riewoldt kicked three and Robbie Gray kicked four for Port. Alex Rance kept Jay Schulz to two goals.
WHO WINS
Port Adelaide.
Adelaide Oval has become a fortress for this young team. After a mid-season slump caused by the loss of its two key defenders, it has slowly been building towards finals and arrives in reasonable form. Robbie Gray may be the difference – he's racking up good games and Brownlow votes, with two goals and 33 touches against Fremantle. Chad Wingard seems to save his best for big moments, and goes into the match in good form.
After beating Sydney, Richmond celebrated like a team that had won a grand final. Realistically, it beat a team without superstar Lance Franklin and with little to play for. While its achievement in making finals is praiseworthy, it shouldn't distract from the fact that the club has gone backwards from last year. It relies heavily on a few superstars – Martin, Deledio, Cotchin and Riewoldt – with talent too thin below them. The Power has developed a depth of talent across the ground.

The ticket allocation of 10k is correct
Reason behind this is that the " western stand " ( which is half the ground ) is allocated to " Adelaide oval " members
So the rest of the ground is divided between the 2 competing clubs
-
Not getting too far ahead of my self but very proud of the boys and the exciting football that they have played, get rid of the chip to chip stuff and just get it moving quickly.
Anyway, Richmond have a good record against Port, and if by any chance we get up I think we maybe playing Freo there.
I believe with there congested way of playing football, we also have a chance there too!!!
OHHH IM A DREAMER AND I DREAM BIG!!!
GO THE TIGERS!!!

I don't feel as much pressure going into this one as a supporter. Last year I feared losing to the team who shouldn't have been there. This time I feel like whatever is going to happen just will as we did a remarkable job in getting there. Heat is on next year though to just not be making up the numbers.

Just announced that the AFL will make Port wear their white clash strip this week while we'll be wearing in our traditional jumper and black shorts. The Alberton crowd are not happy lol.

A SEETHING Port Adelaide has slammed an AFL decision forcing the club to wear its white clash strip in Sunday's elimination final against Richmond after it was deemed the Tigers don't have a viable alternative jumper.
The Power were directed on Monday to wear their clash strip, despite finishing fifth and earning the right to host Sunday's final at Adelaide Oval.
The club said the decision was based on the "assertion that Richmond does not have a clash strip that is distinctive enough when compared to the Power’s traditional black home uniform".

-
stuff off Port you crappy franchise.
-
Yep shove it up your clacker. Your guernsey is poo anyway.
-
Stuff off Port! We have been wearing the Yellow & Black for well over 100 years, Port only took up the black jumper a few years ago. Just before that they were decked out in an electric teal blue catastrophy. We get the jumper choice because we have always worn it, Port are just Johnny-come-lately when it comes to wearing the black, white & teal. Why don't Port take the chance to wear a negative version of their original sanfl jumper - a white jumper with black jail bars? Port also have the same problem when they play Effendon - take the hint losers & give up on trying to wear black when you are over 100 years too late! You can't keep changing jumpers like you change underwear & expect rights at the same time!
YELLOW AND BLACK!

Rance, Edwards, Ellis, Miles, Griffiths and others have all played a huge role in our wins, not just our superstars. That is what has been so pleasing during our winning streak.

Sydney won the flag two years ago without Franklin, and Sydney without a couple more of those players is just a side that the rest of the competition could afford.

Port have now been given permission to wear the traditional Port Prison bar jumper with white shorts, if they can get a set in time
Can hardly wait for Eddie McChins reaction to that ;D ;D
-
Maybe they shouldn't change their jumper every 5 minutes and then they could have a right over a strip. If they kept their teal and white jumper that they had when they joined the comp then there wouldn't be any issues.
-
West Coast and Port have huge identity issues
-
Patrick Keane @AFL_PKeane twitter:
"Port Adelaide has asked AFL for permission to wear its prison bar guernsey with white shorts against Richmond on Sunday.
AFL will place Port in its prison bar guernsey & white shorts, due to a clear differentiation, if club can produce full jumper set by weekend.
AFL has distinct colour-clash policy as, at all times, wants to avoid any scenario where a player may wrongly kick / handball to an opponent."
-
they can lose in whatever jumper they want as far as we care
-
I think it's only right that Port wear their away strip when a big boy club comes to town.
They're certified ferals over there, fellas. Like Collingwood fans with a twist of rural caravan park.
I'm anticipating some EPL style brawls out the front of AO if the tigez get up. Bring ya knuckle dusters and get ready to go back to back with your tiger bruthas.

It's in our destiny to win, last year we would have played Port at home for our first final, Essendon tipped the draw so we played ninth placed Carlton, arguably our voodoo team, and lost. How ironic that we now get to rewrite last years final scenario. GO TIGES!!

Tigers out to silence Power noise: Houli
Jennifer Phelan
afl.com.au
September 3, 2014
BACHAR Houli says Richmond will approach Sunday's do-or-die final against Port Adelaide with a nothing-to-lose attitude but has acknowledged the importance of a fast start to silence the local crowd.
Houli said the Tigers would take confidence from their round 21 win at Adelaide Oval against the Crows, as well as the win over Port in Melbourne in round 17.
"We'll focus on what works well and it's very important to get off to a good start," Houli said on Wednesday, ahead of the Bachar Houli Cup at Punt Road.
"That will kind of put them in the backseat a little bit. "We'll just focus on coming out and starting well.
"For the past nine weeks, every game has been an elimination final for us so in terms of preparation, nothing changes and we'll just be focusing on another game.
"We've got nothing to lose to go out there and show our fans we're capable of being in a position where we can win a final for them after they stuck by us earlier in the year."
Houli said the Tigers had recovered well from Saturday evening's inspiring win over the Sydney Swans and expected they would have a full list of players to pick from, with the exception of Chris Knights and Matt Thomas. Knights (quad) and Thomas (knee) won't play again this year.
While Saturday's three-point win came in emotional circumstances given it was the last hurdle the Tigers needed to cross to shore up their finals spot, Houli said they'd moved on quickly.
"We had a great win on the weekend but our main objective was to recover really well," he said.
"I haven't actually seen many of the boys – recovery has been very individual in the last few days.
"Tomorrow will be our main training session and we'll be training pretty hard to come prepared for another huge game."
Much has been made about the Tigers' turnaround and nine-game winning streak, which came after the team regained a number of key players from injuries.
But Houli said a better execution of the game plan and some hard conversations between the players also contributed.
"I think it was just making each other accountable," he said.
"Initially at the start of the year we had a very good pre-season but there was a period where we weren't holding each other accountable for our actions.
"It was little things like chasing, tackling … these things were going under our guard a little bit.
"When we started our feedback sessions, that helped us a lot because it's made us accountable for what we're doing and I guess it's lifted the bar for everyone else."
Houli was speaking at the third annual Bachar Houli Cup, which is a program that provides Islamic schools and students the chance to play in an AFL competition.
It encourages students to make the transition from school football into community clubs, with Houli – as the competition's only Muslim player - the role model.
Houli said it was encouraging to see so many young Muslims changing codes from basketball and soccer to take on the game.
"Being at the highest level it gives me a great opportunity as a multicultural ambassador to give back to the community I come from and hopefully we can see more young Muslims entering the game from different cultures," he said.
"Hopefully we can see a few more in the future come through the ranks and play at the highest level."

Preview: Port Adelaide v Richmond
Adam McNicol
afl.com.au
September 3, 2014 12:15 PM
THIS is the most unexpected match-up in the first week of the finals. Midway through the season Port Adelaide was two games clear on top of the ladder while Richmond was scrapping away with the cellar-dwellers. How times have changed since then. The Power have slipped out of the top four and the Tigers have gone on a remarkable nine-game winning run. Now they meet in a sudden-death battle at Adelaide Oval. Richmond will take plenty of confidence out of its win over Port in early July, but the big question is whether the Tigers have much petrol left in their tank.
WHERE AND WHEN: Adelaide Oval, Sunday September 7, 2.50pm ACST
THIS YEAR
R17, 2014, Richmond 19.12 (126) d Port Adelaide 16.10 (106) at Etihad Stadium
The Tigers went into the game as underdogs, but they scored an impressive upset victory. First-year player Sam Lloyd led the way up forward with three goals, while defender Troy Chaplin booted two vital majors against his former club. Travis Boak
PREVIOUS FIVE ENCOUNTERS
R17, 2014, Richmond 19.12 (126) d Port Adelaide 16.10 (106) at Etihad Stadium
R7, 2013, Richmond 18.6 (114) d Port Adelaide 10.13 (73) at AAMI Stadium
R23, 2012, Richmond 16.10 (106) drew with Port Adelaide 16.10 (106) at the MCG
R6, 2012, Richmond 13.13 (91) d Port Adelaide 8.6 (54) at AAMI Stadium
R10, 2011, Port Adelaide 13.11 (89) d Richmond 10.14 (74) at TIO Stadium
KEY MATCH-UPS
* Alex Rance v Jay Schulz
Rance has been among Richmond's most consistent players this season, and he was a brilliant performer in last weekend's win over the Sydney Swans. He will need to keep his former teammate quiet if the Tigers are to keep Port to a manageable score.
* Ivan Maric v Matthew Lobbe
The Tigers have been a different side since Maric returned from the ankle injury that sidelined him early in the season, while Lobbe has had a brilliant year and is a chance to be the All Australian ruckman. With top-class midfields at their feet, both Maric and Lobbe will have the ability to influence the game in a big way.
MEDICAL ROOM
Port Adelaide The Power couldn't be better placed, with Aaron Young (foot, test) the only player under any injury cloud other than those with long-term injuries. Matt White (groin) has been deemed fit to play.
Richmond The Tigers are in a similar boat, with the vast majority of the list fit and available for selection. The club didn't pick up any injuries last week and will field a full-strength side against the Power.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY WIN? They'll play an away semi-final against the loser of the Sydney Swans/Fremantle clash.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THEY LOSE? It's do or die for both teams on Sunday; lose and their season will end.
THE SIX POINTS
1. Since round 15 Richmond has won nine consecutive matches, kicking an average score of 90 points while conceding only 68. In contrast, Port Adelaide has lost six of nine games while averaging only 81 points a game.
2. The Tigers will be looking for their first finals wins since the 2001 semi-final against Carlton. They haven't won an elimination final since 1977.
3. Port Adelaide was the number one inside 50 side during the home and away season, averaging 56.5 a game. Richmond was ranked eighth, averaging 50.6 a game.
4. Port Adelaide will be playing in its ninth finals series and won both its two previous elimination finals (2005, 2013). This is the first time the Power have reached consecutive finals series since 2004-05.
5. Since 2007 the fifth placed team has been upset by eighth only twice: Adelaide lost to Collingwood in 2008 and Richmond lost to Carlton in 2013.
6. Solid form from Richmond backman Alex Rance has him ranked as the fourth best key defender in the League according to the Official AFL Player Ratings. Geelong's Harry Taylor is ranked No. 1.
Prediction: Port Adelaide by 25 points

Only twice ? So let's see , that's 2 of out of 6 years which is 33%. Pretty good result for 8th I wouldve thought ? Gotta love twisted stats.
-
Based on absolutely nothing port are favourites and they tip port by 25.
-
2 fairly logical posts.
I'd also like to add that they are 3 and 6 from their past 9 games to our 9 and 0 with the last 5 being 2 and 3 to 5 zip.

High emotions sparked by Troy Chaplin add to intrigue for elimination final between Port Adelaide and Richmond
WARREN TREDREA
The Adelaide Advertiser
September 04, 2014
RARELY has there been such an emotional build up to an elimination final.
There is still three days to Sunday’s knockout final between Port Adelaide and Richmond at Adelaide Oval but the football world has been abuzz with this game and all the intriguing subplots.
No sooner had Richmond upset the all-conquering Swans on Saturday night when the attention turned to the angst between the Power players and their ex-teammate Troy Chaplin, who is now at Tigerland.
Chaplin’s animated “aeroplane’’ and tugging of the Richmond guernsey celebrations late in the Tigers’ upset 20-point win against Port at Etihad Stadium in round 17 wasn’t well received at Alberton.
Captain Travis Boak didn’t hide his thoughts at his press conference the following day, saying: “I hope he (Chaplin) is enjoying his season’’.
At the time the Tigers were struggling at the foot of the table and the finals seemed a mile away.
They were closer to the wooden spoon than playing in September.
Some pundits have suggested Boak’s comments have come back to bite him and that he has given Richmond extra motivation on Sunday.
I disagree. I loved the fact that the proud Port skipper stood up for his club.
Perhaps Boak’s comments gave the Tigers the spur they needed to gatecrash the finals.
But the ill feeling towards Chaplin has been stewing within the walls at Alberton ever since he wrote a tactless departure email to his former teammates when he left to join Richmond as a free agent at the end of the 2012 season after the Power had missed the finals for the fifth consecutive year.
His message that the club and its players need to become more professional has never sat well with them.
But if there is one positive that has come out of it it’s that it has only added to the drama for a final which already is at fever pitch.
While I’m not convinced that either coach — Port’s Ken Hinkley and Richmond’s Damien Hardwick — will use these side issues as motivation it does highlight that playing for the jumper is still well and truly alive in this era of free agency and fat contracts.
However, when I played I loved using these types of situations as a source of motivation.
Make no mistake, there will be an emotion-charged atmosphere at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
And “Chappy’’ is certain to cop some flak from the Port fans.
Adding to the unique build-up has been the AFL’s ridiculous decision to force the home team (Port) to wear its away uniform in front of its home sell out crowd.
I’m still coming to grips that something so important can be so poorly handled by the competition’s governing body.
The “compromise’’ of allowing Port to wear its historic SANFL prison bars guernsey is just a lame effort by the league and a virtual admission that it stuffed up.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that in round 22 against Carlton, the Power was denied its wish of wearing the same historical jumper as a celebration and tribute to Port’s all-conquering 1914 team. Go figure.
What we have now is a race against time to order, make and deliver the new set of jumpers before the historic first Adelaide Oval AFL final.
But as sexy as the off-the-field build up has been, the game itself promises to be a beauty.
Richmond’s nine straight wins must be respected.
Teams don’t fight back from a 3-10 start to the season to win nine consecutive games through luck.
After copping plenty of public humiliation, this Tigers team has shown it has some serious ticker.
The players simply have refused to give up and let their season wilt away to nothing.
Their victims include finalists Port and Essendon and away wins against two clubs who were fighting for a finals spot, Adelaide and West Coast.
Richmond’s ninth and most decisive win was against flag favourite Sydney in Sydney.
Sure, the Swans left out several key players, including Coleman Medallist Lance Franklin, but the job still had to be won and the Tigers carried it out superbly.
Their win was built on the back of winning clearances 47-38, contested possessions 165-49 and ruck hit-outs 60-42.
The recipe for Port on Sunday is simple.
Matty Lobbe must get the upper hand on Ivan Maric in the ruck and to achieve this he must work him over.
Maric is a tough competitor but he doesn’t have Lobbe’s running capacity.
Port’s number one big man must run him up and down the ground and, when the opportunity presents itself, he must push forward and become an avenue to goal, tiring Maric in the process.
If Lobbe can dominate the aerial battle it will deny the Tigers’ prime movers of the ball and their most offensive weapon in the game — the midfield.
Stopping Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio, Brandon Ellis, Anthony Miles and Co. from getting easy ball is a must.
This didn’t happen when the teams last played, with Richmond giving Port a touch up in the middle of the ground, winning clearances 50-41 and contested possessions 159-126.
Both clubs have played with a plus-one defender this season and if I was coaching in this game I would try to deny the opposition such freedom this weekend.
Tiger stopper Alex Rance on Port’s chief goalkicker Jay Schulz looms as a mouth-watering match-up, along with Richmond ace Jack Riewoldt on Power full back Alipate Carlile.
But both teams’ scoring chances will be severely restricted if Chaplin and Matthew Broadbent are left to play free across half-ba ck, intercepting the play.
I think it’s time to play man on man all over the ground and back their offensive weapons in to win the game without a free player set up behind the ball.
The defensive squeeze must be applied, meaning which club deals with the pressure best will go a long way towards winning the game.
The build up to this clash has been full of off-field drama. The best players will see this as something out of their control and prepare accordingly, while others might get caught up in it.
Those who focus solely on the game and getting the best out of themselves will be the ones who prosper.

Contested ball the key to stopping Power, says Hardwick
Jon Pierik
The Age
September 4, 2014
As the Tigers begin plotting what they hope will be their first finals win in 13 years, coach Damien Hardwick has identified winning the contested-possession count as the key to defeating Port Adelaide in Sunday's elimination final.
While Bachar Houli said on Wednesday that the Tigers wanted to do well for veteran Nathan Foley, who missed last year's elimination final loss to Carlton, Hardwick is focusing on the statistical areas which will dictate whether his side extends its nine-game winning streak.
"The thing that has probably happened over the course of the past four to five rounds, we have probably played in conditions that have been less suitable for pristine ball movement," Hardwick said.
"But we are hoping for a dry track in Adelaide. It's a fantastic ground to play on, it suits our game style, so we are really looking forward to it. In saying that, the contested-ball numbers are going to be crucial. To beat Port Adelaide, we have got to beat them inside and then get them outside. So, contested ball will be the big one. We managed to beat them by plus 33 which is a significant victory last time."
The Tigers prevailed by 20 points when the teams last met – in round 17 at Etihad Stadium. It was to be the Tigers' third straight win, fuelling their belief that they could launch what seemed an improbable run to September.
Richmond won the contested-possession count 159-126, having been ranked last in that area heading into the game. This ensured the Tigers were able to curb the Power's renowned outside run, a point Hardwick noted immediately after the win. "We have just got to make sure we continue that trend this week," Hardwick told the club website on Wednesday.
Defender Alex Rance was also superb in that earlier win, holding Power spearhead Jay Schulz to just two goals.
Houli said the Tigers had gained in confidence from that victory and were looking forward to their third interstate trip in a month. "We're in a slightly different position but when you're in the finals, anything can happen," he said. "That's the beauty of finals football – it steps up another notch."
The rebounding half-back said the Tigers wanted to win for Foley, who will finally make his finals debut in his 10th year at the club. "Mr Rightman I call him, he just does everything to perfection," Houli said.
"It's great to see Nathan playing his first final, he's been nothing short of sensational. Last week we did it for Chris Newman, this week, we'll hopefully play extra hard for Nathan Foley who's been such a competitor at this club for years and years."

Glenn McFarlane takes a look at the big questions on the eve of the AFL finals series
Herald-Sun
September 04, 2014
5. Is there any danger of Port Adelaide losing a final quarter?
It’s doubtful, given their record this season. If the Tigers are trailing at three-quarter-time on Sunday, look out, the streak is almost as good as over. The Power has an incredible capacity to run out games and have won 16 of their 22 final quarters this year. That’s a weapon that is critical during finals matches, and couple that with the loudest crowd at a venue that cannot be silenced, and you understand just what Port Adelaide can still achieve this season.
8. Now that the Tigers are there, will the steam run out as it did last year?
There won’t be the same capitulation there was against Carlton in the elimination final last year. These Tigers appear to be a more mature breed than they were 12 months ago. Richmond has been the story of the back half of the season and it is important that whatever happens at Adelaide Oval on Sunday just builds on what might happen much deeper into September next year. The Tigers can win this week, but it is highly doubtful they can win the flag this year. But if the passion and dedication that has driven them in the second half of the season is maintained throughout next year, who knows what might happen in 2015.

Richmond charters five buses and a plane to ferry fans into Adelaide for final
By Daniel Cherny
The Herald
Sept. 4, 2014, 2:49 p.m.
Richmond has rarely been known to do anything half-heartedly - be it crisis, or hype.
Thankfully for the Tigers it is the latter that is prevailing at present and, as a result, the Richmond convoy this week features not only the traditional bandwagon, but also fives buses and a chartered plane.
Inundated with demand from its excited faithful hoping to watch the team take on Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval in Sunday's elimination final, the Tigers have organised five chartered coaches for fans to travel from Melbourne to Adelaide on Saturday. The 225-strong contingent departs Melbourne at 8am and is scheduled to arrive in the City of Churches at 6.30pm, with the club labelling its service the Tiger Army Express.
Those wanting to travel more hastily were offered the opportunity to join staff, directors and sponsors on a chartered flight. Those 168 people, some of whom paid $600 return for the privilege in order for the club to recoup costs, will fly to Adelaide on Saturday, returning on Sunday. With seats on other commercial flights at a premium, this new form of Tiger Air sold out in less than 24 hours.
In total, around 7000 Richmond members will attend the game, with the Tigers looking for just their third finals victory in 32 years.
Richmond CEO Brendon Gale was chuffed at the enthusiasm of supporters.
"Look, we've just tried to accommodate as many as we can. We understand it's a bit of a stretch for some people, it's expensive and hard," Gale told radio SEN on Thursday.
"We've lobbied the AFL and the carriers to get more planes.
"I'd imagine a lot of people are carpooling ... It's great, we're going to need all the support we can get. They're a formidable force, it's hostile territory, but we'll have plenty of support on the day I'm sure."
Those staying in Melbourne to celebrate father's and finals day will be able to watch the game on a big screen at the club's Punt Road home. Richmond is expecting at least 3000 fans will descend on the venue.
"I'm really excited for our members and fans who get to play a part in finals. Chatting to a few of the cheer squad members last night, they were doing the banner, and they're just thrilled," Gale said.
The Tigers' astonishing nine-game winning streak has the club riding the crest of a sizeable wave, with Gale paying tribute to the resilience of those in the inner sanctum who were able to catapult a 3-10 outfit into September.
"I'm really proud of our coaching group and players for turning this around. We were on the edge of the abyss, we were probably in the abyss, but we've managed to turn it around with a lot of fortitude."

Maric in the Power's sights, says coach Hart
Steve Larkin, AAP
September 6, 2014 12:39 PM
PORT Adelaide's taming of Tiger talisman Ivan Maric could decide Sunday's elimination final, the Power's director of coaching Shaun Hart says.
Maric monstered the rucks in Richmond's last gasp win against the Sydney Swans, recording 45 hits outs - 20 above his season average.
Hart says Maric's duel with Matthew Lobbe, who has been a pillar for Port, averaging almost 33 hit outs a game in a breakout year, will swing the Adelaide Oval knockout final.
The pair are bullish ruckman, preferring brute force to subtlety, and Hart says the Power are well aware of Maric's magnetism for the Tigers, who are hunting their first finals wins since 2001.
"Another enormous battle, no doubt about it," Hart told reporters on Saturday after Port's light match-eve training.
"That battle, and then what happens when the ball hits the ground off their hands, is an enormous battle.
"But he (Maric) is a real leader for them. Since he has come back, they have been a different team.
"Certainly you become aware of the players that really give energy and motivation and inspiration to their team. I think Ivan is one of those guys.
"That battle looms as a real focal point for the game."
Maric missed the initial ten games of the season with an ankle injury and his return was a key in Richmond's unheralded nine-game winning streak to steal into the finals.
The Richmond ruckman will meet a confident Lobbe who, like his Port teammates, is bubbling at the prospect of the cut-throat final.
"The mood is really buoyant, really up and about, and our group is really running well I reckon," Hart said.
"There is certainly no worries, no fears, about this game coming up in terms of just being able to compete and do their best. They're really quite energetic.
"The momentum is just right at the moment."
Port enter the finals as the league's second-highest scorers, having posted 90 or more points in 14 games this season, but Hart expected scores to drop by as much as 20 points in the eliminator.
"Both teams like to play quick football when they get the opportunity," he said.
"But certainly I look at Sydney and Richmond's game last week, it ended up (with scores) in the 60s.
"Finals footy dictates that we're probably going to see 10 or 20 points less on average than what a home and away game might be between the two teams.
"We just have to make sure we maximise our opportunities on offence.
"And defensively you just have to be switched on ... if you're not, and holes open up, you become really vulnerable."

The burning questions and the best analysis ahead of the Port Adelaide-Richmond elimination final
Bruce Matthews
Herald-Sun
September 06, 2014 8:00PM
BURNING QUESTIONS
1. Has Richmond the energy left to lift the workrate to finals intensity?
As coach Damien Hardwick pointed out, his Tigers have survived virtual elimination finals for the past five weeks. So pressure is not new to them.
That elimination final loss last year should ensure they won’t subconsciously slacken off, as if reaching the finals again is sufficient effort.
But the worry will be if they fall behind early and whether there are the mental reserves remaining to fight back yet again.
2. Are the Tigers better prepared to extend their finals campaign this time?
Aside from a near full-strength list, several players, such as Dustin Martin, Anthony Miles, Brandon Ellis, Ben Griffiths, Reece Conca and Nick Vlastuin are more mature and match hardened.
While there was never a question of midfield talent, there’s more grunt in there now. And a balance on each line with ruckman Ivan Maric, Alex Rance marshalling the defence and Jack Riewoldt presenting as a reliable forward target.
3. Is there an X-factor in Richmond’s line-up?
Hardwick admits he should never have left Nathan Foley out of the midfield group last September.
Foley’s work was often overlooked in the revival with the focus on vastly improved Miles at the centre bounces and stoppages, but he has the knack and experience to lead the critical contested-ball duels and provide supply for captain Trent Cotchin and his band.
Richmond dominated the contested possession 159-126 in the 20 points win against the Power in Round 17 and must at least finish ahead again if it hopes to advance deeper into the finals.
THE MATCH-UP
Jay Schulz v Alex Rance
Rance is in All-Australian contention and Schulz was right in line to win the Coleman Medal. What an appetising battle for supremacy if it eventuates with both combatants so strong in the overhead and strength marking duels.
Schulz managed only two goals against the Tigers last time, so Hardwick may have another assignment for his in-form tall backman.
THE FORM
Round 17
Richmond 19.12 (126) d. Port Adelaide 16.10 (106)
Goalkickers
Richmond: Lloyd 3, Riewoldt 3, Petterd 2, Chaplin 2, Vickery 2.
Port Adelaide: Gray 4, Broadbent 2, White 2, Schulz 2.
Best
Richmond: Miles, Cotchin, Deledio, Rance.
Port Adelaide: Boak, Gray, Cornes, Wines.
Never more than a couple of goals in it for the entire game at Etihad Stadium. Travis Boak was an inspiring Power skipper and Sam Lloyd bobbed up as the surprise on the Tigers’ scoresheet.
THE FACTS (powered by CHAMPION DATA)
PORT ADELAIDE
PORT Adelaide won three and lost six matches against top-eight sides this season. Richmond lost its first six matches against fellow finalists and won its next three.
THE Power has recorded an average time-in-forward-half differential of plus 10min 58sec per game this season, ranked No.1.
MATTHEW Broadbent has gained an average of 439m per game in 2014, the best at Port Adelaide.
THE Power have scored from 19 per cent of Jack Hombsch’s intercept possessions this year, ranked sixth of the top 25 intercept possession winners in the competition.
RICHMOND
RICHMOND has laid 63 tackles per game on average this season against top-eight sides, ranked 15th.
SINCE Round 15, Richmond has averaged 14 more contested possessions than its opponent per game, ranked No.2.
BRETT Deledio has averaged 26 disposals, 10 contested possessions, six inside 50s and four clearances per match in his past seven matches against the Power.
ALEX Rance has averaged eight intercept possessions per game this season, ranked No. 1 in the AFL.

The Opposition Analyst's view of Port Adelaide v Richmond
The Opposition Analyst
The Age
September 7, 2014
Port Adelaide:
What Ken Hinkley wants
1. His team to continue to take the game on. Port Adelaide's best football has been played with an energy and the bravado of a young team with nothing to lose. The Power rank No.1 in the comp for play-on percentage. Now they are in an elimination final against an irresistible opponent. He will urge them to keep "going for it", as all-out attack may be the best defence against these Tigers.
2. Defenders who are prepared to defend and win their one-on-one battles. Richmond look much more dangerous with Ben Griffiths in tandem with Jack Riewoldt, as well as the more permanent forward pairing of Brett Deledio and the bullish Dustin Martin. The Port defenders will need to stay organised and play their most ruthless defence against these goal-scoring threats.
What Ken Hinkley doesn't want
1. His midfield to be uncompetitive. Last week against Fremantle the team conceded consecutive goals in the third quarter and with Richmond ranked No. 2 for clearances, he will have put the acid on his midfielders to win the all-important "inside" battle.
Richmond:
What Damien Hardwick wants
1. A fast start. Richmond has led at quarter-time in eight of its nine consecutive wins and last week against the ladder leaders kicked 36 points unanswered. If they can repeat that dose they will go a fair way towards subduing the Port Adelaide faithful and the "Portress".
2. To control Port Adelaide's outside run. He knows they are playing a "high-voltage" running team who have significant ability to continue their outside run, right until the final siren. The best way to deny that run will be for Richmond to control possession and deny the Power the ball.
What Damian Hardwick doesn't want
His team running out of gas, emotionally. The Tigers have won nine straight and are the form team (along with Sydney) of the competition. They have successfully survived each game as a "mini-final" along the way and are full of confidence and self-belief. When the heat goes up, will they be able to maintain the rage?

Go in hard from the start and settle our heads quickly. In the other finals this weekend, nerves got to the sides early in games and there were heaps of mistakes.
-
Whats the crowd chanting???
"Where da free stuff at?"
-
Missed tackles and slipping over. Need to settle.
-
What were we doing on the wing? Ball-watching when the wind held up the ball.
-
How many mistackles :banghead
-
Need these tackles to stick.
-
Sub chaplin
-
Why wouldn't you kick with the wind 1st qtr?
-
Need leaders here.
-
Fumbles and another miss tackle zzzz
-
Dusty lost his feet. We are done.
-
Missed target 15m away on the wing gifts Port another :banghead
Very poor start.

Gone

Petard for Chaplin
Pull the trigger dimma

Pathetic Richmond!
-
Should have gone with the wind - catch up footy all day with a home-town crowd :-(
-
Play on Stevic? Really?
-
This is what can happen when you happy with just making it.
Mistakes, soft tackles and poor defending.
-
Every inside 50 is to nobody. NOBODY
-
Need to lay a massive hit. This is soft.
-
Dam negro
-
Embarrassing as per usual
-
:banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead
-
Only a trifle embarrassing.
-
Gave over.
Second to the ball. Reactive. Losing feet at the slightest contact. Structure non-existent.
-
Wtf in the back?
-
This is worse than carlton game.
Embarassing
-
They've forgotten how to tackle.
-
Guess what everybody?
We're still shyte after all..
-
I think Dusty summed it up before, he was just ambling along on a nice sunny day enjoying the atmosphere and not fricking chasing :banghead
-
Gonna lose by 150
-
Hardwick made finals two years
Straight
Consistency
5 year co tract extension
-
Chaplin can't handle the pressure.
The hole team needs to slow it down and compose themselves.
-
Oh dear! We're stuffed! :-\
-
This is worse than carlton game.
Embarassing
Nothing is ever that bad.
I don't care what anyone says.
If you can't put up in a final you shouldn't be there.
-
Over it
-
The commentators are right. We should of kicked with the wind and got a good start.
-
Will we get ahead of ourselves in the pre-season again?
"Oh look we won 9 in a row we're not that far away...."
-
Cotch picked the wrong end. The wing is to right of screen.
How do Port have a loose man in defence and loose men forward of the ball :banghead ::). No working hard enough and Dimma needs to go man-on-man up forward.
-
This is worse than carlton game.
Embarassing
Nothing is ever that bad.
I don't care what anyone says.
If you can't put up in a final you shouldn't be there.

Will we get ahead of ourselves in the pre-season again?
The 9 wins in a row is pretty meaningless right now.
-
Cotch picked the wrong end. The wing is to right of screen.
How do Port have a loose man in defence and loose men forward of the ball :banghead ::). No working hard enough and Dimma needs to go man-on-man up forward.
It's the coaches job
Ffs
-
Geez Geez
-
People saying we are not slow
Pls
We do need more pace and crumbers but any side that is second to the pill, doesn't apply pressure and is unaccountable looks slow.
-
People saying we are not slow
Pls
we look really sluggish
-
Umpires r stuffing cheating
-
People saying we are not slow

got one back.
-
Hooray! lol
Conca goal.
Rich 6
Port 43

Umpires r stuffing cheating
Its stevic again
-
Umpires are giving us a very good run.
Our coaching is one dimensional and has no answers to opposition strategy is more the point.
-
Cotch picked the wrong end. The wing is to right of screen.
How do Port have a loose man in defence and loose men forward of the ball :banghead ::). No working hard enough and Dimma needs to go man-on-man up forward.
Lingy is right its not the best to do in finals. Its put us on the back foot. We've folded under the pressure this first quarter and its probably costed us the game already.
-
That summed us up so far. First hands on the footy in the centre but no support for Miles so when the ball drops there's 3 Port players to clear the footy their way for a goal :banghead.
-
Umpires r stuffing cheating
Its stevic again
Anyone blaming umpires is in fantasy land
-
Finals is a different game. Home & away wins mean nothing today.
Cotchin made the wrong choice. If the wind changes we are done
-
Also its noticed they are not running hard early in the game
-
Umpires r stuffing cheating
Its stevic again
Anyone blaming umpires is in fantasy land
:cheers
-
Flossy judged the accuracy right but the ball held up. Rushed point.
7 - 49
High on Jack not paid?
-
50 looooll fk you stevic
-
Miles is smart, Make them earn it. That knee in the back was great
-
The ball is dropping short and our forwards are playing 5m from behind :banghead
-
Why the stuff did we kick into this breeze?
-
would not surprise me if Lids has a broken nose. His really feeling it
-
The coach SHOULD be responsible for the direction the team kicks
-
Quarter time
Richmond 1.1-7
Port Adel. 8.1-49
Goal: Conca.
Stablised in the last 5 mins but all too late.
-
Breeze or no breeze, we are playing poo.
-
would not surprise me if Lids has a broken nose. His really feeling it
It's a contact sport ffs
Break someone else nose
-
More port players at every stuffen contest. Tiges not playing up to the occasion. Games already over I reckon.
Best part about this is we see who really stands up, so far only one I can see is Rance.
-
50 looooll fk you stevic
He paid the first one against us too
-
This is worse than carlton game.
Embarassing
Nothing is ever that bad.
I don't care what anyone says.
If you can't put up in a final you shouldn't be there.
Wait til we lose by 120 points chump
The only thing worse than losing to the cheating scum is losing to the cheats when they didn't actually finish in the eight.
Nothing will ever be worse than that.
-
The coach SHOULD be responsible for the direction the team kicks
Why? The coach is in the box. All the captain needs to do is lick his little finger, stick it up in the air and the side that feels cold if where the breeze is coming from.
-
A flashlight, of the last few season really
Chaplin. Like a teenage schoolgirl
Rance like a Greek god
-
.
Why the stuff did we kick into this breeze?
To come home with it in the last, I'm guessing.
Too bad we'll already be 80 points down by then.
-
The coach SHOULD be responsible for the direction the team kicks
Why? The coach is in the box. All the captain needs to do is lick his little finger, stick it up in the air and the side that feels cold if where the breeze is coming from.
The coach doesn't walk around the field of play like fifteen mins before it starts?
Why? Cause the coach is sposed to be responsible for everything...
-
Why the stuff did we kick into this breeze?
Because we now have the wind and we will have the wind on the last quarter best ever position to be for the score it is.
-
Breeze or no breeze, we are playing poo.
This. Unaccountable footy.
Not playing smart to the conditions either. Forwards playing from behind when the ball is dropping short into the breeze :facepalm.
-
Unless the wind stops
-
Breeze or no breeze, we are playing poo.
This. Unaccountable footy.
Not playing smart to the conditions either. Forwards playing from behind when the ball is dropping short into the breeze :facepalm.
We underrate the value of smart, composed footballers and rarely recruit them.
-
Ricky to save the day when he comes on.
-
Stevic 50m #3 against us
-
Dimma, they are playing an spare man a kick behind the play. You need to do something about it.
-
Stevic 50m #3 against us
Yep, Stevic's fault Riewoldt is a pathetic front running sook who can't play big games cause he expends too much energy being a flog.
-
Morris looks injured
-
What were you doing Morris? :help
-
We need to make a play for Goldsack - Morris is a liability and has been for two years.
-
houli that was dumb.
-
Houli dumb.
-
Stevic against Houli. Charged in and loved paying thay
-
Sub off houli now
-
Breeze or no breeze, we are playing poo.
This. Unaccountable footy.
Not playing smart to the conditions either. Forwards playing from behind when the ball is dropping short into the breeze :facepalm.
I mentioned the same thing.
It's stuff you learn in juniors.
Unbelievable.
-
Actually back on level pegging here, pity we are 7 goals down.
-
Stevic against Houli. Charged in and loved paying thay
Or maybe he was just doing his job that Houli with his stupidity made easy for him?
-
Port stops us from scoring heavy this quarter & Port put on another 6 in the 3rd as we struggle we are done
-
Gordon. maybe his not ready for finals football. Yet it seems the rest of the team havent learnt from last years final either.
-
Grigg is on fire
-
You'll - c'mon really? Jack - get into the game
-
Gordon. maybe his not ready for finals football. Yet it seems the rest of the team havent learnt from last years final either.
Gordon is going good
-
They can't miss either :P.
-
even Jonathon brown is saying we should of kicked with the wind.
mind you we are not scoring this quarter with it either
-
Still no manning up of the loose man in defence. Every long kick of ours forward is going straight to the free Port defender.
-
we are giving away too many stupid free kicks down field. 50 points down. We have not scored yet with the wind
-
Port stops us from scoring heavy this quarter & Port put on another 6 in the 3rd as we struggle we are done
i think we're done by half time if we cant score a few with this wind. We need all the assistance we can get at the moment.
-
Nice kick by Benny G. Just missed from 70m out.
8 - 57
-
Port have an extra 9 players on the field. Why hasnt any umpire picked this up..
Oh look its just great to be a part of finals.
-
Stevic on Houli again.
-
Get Houli the stuff off now! I am off to mow my lawns and I want him off when I get back.
-
well this is unpleasant...
-
Didnt expect to win but its good to see normailty is restored and RFC is a laughing stock again.
-
well l have turned it off. They are not using their brains today & are not running hard enough. Season over cya's next year
-
Very, very disappointing that the team cannot compete. Shattering as usual when there is a big game.
-
Dusty is having a shocker.
Morris, why didn't you just kick it off the ground?
-
Question what boots are we wearing? Dunlop Volleys.......
-
All our weaknesses and holes still in our list are coming back to bite us.
-
We're playing like we played our GF last week. Used up all our remaining energy and emotion just to make it and now there's nothing left in the tank.
-
Easily the most frustrating team to barrack for.
Cant wait to hear all the spin after the game. Replay of last year it will be
-
too many players are not finals type players.
its a shame.
we could lose today and kept some respect.
the last 9 weeks now mean nothing.
unprofessionalism and softness are back.
to be blunt its been a disgraceful effort almost bordering the loss to Melbourne which was shameful.
we are slow, dumb and not prepared or ready for finals football.
sad just sad.
-
We're playing like we played our GF last week. Used up all our remaining energy and emotion just to make it and now there's nothing left in the tank.
Probably true but its a poor excuse. This is the finals and we should of been able to show some fight even early in the game.
-
This is a JOKE
-
Still can't get near Collingwood.
-
Delist Cotchin
-
Delist Cotchin
No idea.
-
cotchin kicking against the wind just shows how far we are from understanding the basics of finals footy
-
The only reason this won't be a 100+ point loss is if Port put the cue in the rack in the second half to preserve their energy for next week against Freo.
-
Free to Ivan in the ruck 25m out. Goal.
The only way we looked like scoring.

this performance has undone everything. just a disgraceful and embarrassing set of events. just shameful. youd think theyd show some pride at least.
-
Comeback was good while it lasted.......
-
Bit stiff to bag Cotch when he isn't even playing.
-
Houli, that's when you've got to nail the set-up opponent into the turf. No way should he have been allowed to get a handpass off.
-
cotchin kicking against the wind just shows how far we are from understanding the basics of finals footy
Yes it was all the breeze in the first quarter - as evidenced by our stunning comeback this quarter.
-
I thought they may have learnt something from last year. Morris needs to be upgraded.

nag it wasn't its just a sign we aint professional enough.
the players weren't switched on and we gifted Port at least 3 goals in the first quarter, the coach also has to take responsibility. some of the players today proved they are not finals players. its time to ship them off.
-

Goldsack.

Should never allow an opposition side to kick 14 goals in a half of footy. ESPECIALLY STUFFEN FINALS.
Do they know its an elimination final ?

Bit hard to ship them off when we keep re-signing them and extending their contracts.
-
Aside from the poor workrate and lack of pressure and accountability, we've had no idea with the breeze today. Long kicks dropping short when kicking into it and then dicky little kicks missing teammates with the breeze :scream.
Half-time
Richmond 1.1 3.2-20
Port Adel. 8.1 14.5-89
Goals: Conca, Maric, Grigg.

Thongs, we are wearing thongs that's the problem
-
Houli, that's when you've got to nail the set-up opponent into the turf. No way should he have been allowed to get a handpass off.
Houli.
Good at making it seem he lost a 50/50 but in reality they become 50/50's
because he allows them to and it somehow, he thinks, hides his deficiencies
-
Question what boots are we wearing? Dunlop Volleys.......
Thongs, we are wearing thongs that's the problem
Probably not the most practical undies to wear when playing footy.
-

Especially when we beat Port only 7 weeks ago.

Agree. Both sides have to play with the breeze for two quarters - it's how you deal with it. We still haven't learnt from the first Cairns debacle in 2011.
-
Poor coaching
-
Slow unaccountable team vs fast skillful very accountable team = embarrassment. Simple case of 9 weeks of mini finals and then having to be up for a real final, pretty much mission impossible for the the best psychology experts available.
-
Not having a good day here in adelaide I must say ;D
-
Poor coaching
No coaching

Can we get some insight from someone at the game ?

Yep. Scoreboard pressure is very important when playing away. We won the first 5 centre clearances yet we turned over possession going forward (partly due to kicking into the breeze as well as Port playing a loose man in drop zone) and it was Port who ran it up the other end for the early goals and got their tails up.
10 of Port's 14 goals so far have come from our turnovers :help.
-
Well good to see the second half has changed the momentum of the game - NOT! :scream
Another Port goal from us losing a 2-1 advantage at half-back thanks to being flatfooted ::).
-
when do we start our discussion of trade season on OER?
-
If this was a movie, we'd start coming back about now.
-
Grigg and Chaplin pls
-
Weakest display iv ever seen.
First 12 mins was benny hill special, school boy errors. Players cant take the heat. Outcoached, outrun, ovrr matched

20m chip into the breeze that goes over the head of a teammate :P. Basic mistake after mistake after mistake. Story of the day.
Lids misses.

absolutely right but the club wont do anything because they won 9 in a row. this group of players wont win a flag. 7th/8th position is there maximum. that's it. we are no where near a premiership ... no where near it.
-
Well that was Rance's "moment" for the day.
-
Worst than last years final I reckon.
Yet dimma still thinks we've improved.
Going to be big list changes. Next year wont be any easier folks.

Leg speed not that important eh Tony?
-
l think the players have not adjusted from playing on a heavy wet surface to a hard surface on a hot sunny day. Most of our players look spent
-
Worst than last years final I reckon.

Going to be big list changes. Next year wont be any easier folks.
they don't have the balls to make big list changes unfortunately. the unprofessional Richmond FC is back. Tigeritis has come back.
-
I blame Ox's avatar.
-
In the past 9 weeks, Ellis, just before, would've run on done the wing and kicked deep into the forward line. Today we turn back into trouble because we look up and see Port jumpers.
-
And that from Lids was the only highlight for the day. About the only time we've broken the lines and ran and bounced.
Rich 27
Port 108

we gonna lose by 100+ what a shameful day for the RFC

RFC Supporters have to continue to be sad. Our list is an 8-11 list that's it. And the sad part I don't see them understanding that, they think they have a good list. Today is embarrassing. I contemplated going to Adealide but decided against it for travel reasons and the long drive, I feel for our supporters coming home in cars and buses. They deserved a fair dinkum effort instead they got crap and a $10 voucher or something.

Today they are just all off their game. They done what we thought was out of reach to make finals. We are not a top 6 side. We are a 7-8 position club at present. l'm happy they made the finals but knew sooner or later would come a loss. Don't bag the club & players now. Be supporters
-
No stuff em.
-
Cant have players like newman, grigg, ect on our list. I dont care where we place on the ladder next year as long as we get rid of these stuffen spuds and bring in some new talent. Because CLEARLY these poo wont cut it.
-
And we finally get one.
Houli hits Griffiths 35m out. Misses.
40 - 121
Just 30 tackles so far despite us spending the whole game chasing tail. Port only have 28 but they've had the ball most of the time.

sorry Monk but if they lost today they had to lose with courage and determination and pride. 3 things that they failed to show anyone today. todays loss overrides the last 9 weeks for me because its such a bad loss done in a bad way.

l think the supporters need to change their culture for this club to win a premiership. The media thrives on the supporters bagging the players. They make money of our poo

what do you want us to do applaud todays performance?

Deledio playing like a champ now the match is over. Typical.
Typical richmond
No one plays like a champ.

Too many gone missing.
Lack of leadership shining like a beacon again.
A positive in sad sort of way has again highlighted that when "our guns" go missing whether that's through poor form or stage fright we simply cannot rely on others.
Today has reinforced to me that certain blokes who are supposedly in our best 22 aren't

We should accept this bullpoo ? I dont think so, and neither should the administration.

Point to Conca.

its been a failed season

Lids hit Jack 45m out on the boundary. Another point.

Thanks Bruce for reminding everyone we've won just 2 (sic it's actually 3) finals in 32 years.

Port have switched off.
Jack gets his 2nd.

Port 122
-
what do you want us to do applaud todays performance?
of course not. today is a shocker & their is only 10k of our supporters at a hostile ground. They have all the advantages over us. It's obvious some of our players have not come up from a hard game last week & we have travelled 2 weeks in a row. The decision to have the wind & the sun behind us in the last was not a good decision. The game was over at halftime
-
Hinkley still not happy. Standards.

Ive been deluding myself over the past few weeks. What was i thinking?

Why the stuff did cotch give them the wind in the first qtr??? Was just saying to my wife an hour before that the golden rule to winning interstate was get of to a good start and do t let th home team get their tails up. Game was over after 12 mins like the Ben cousins game lol

It's a legitimate question, not an excuse - please - id like to know the logic behind that decision.
Also today there were bigger factirs than leg speed - gut running being one, outcoached two and the deer in headlights being 3.
Ill give my full thoughts when I get back to melbourne

I explained somewhere else here - and FWIW I don't agree - but I said it was to do with wanting the breeze in the last quarter which is normally Port's strongest. Of course we wouldn't have expected the game to be over by halfway through the second quarter.
There were many factors. leg speed was one of them - they ran away from us and broke lines because they were quicker , they ran us down because they were quicker
Another problem is we jus don't have enough one touch players - and the few we do can't maintain their skills under pressure, which comes back to composure.
Our tackling has been abysmal for years - technique is appalling - they don't watch the hips and there's to many with muppet arms, but also not enough closing speed - so again a pace issue.
-

And the Finals SPECIALIST, Chrissy Newman
-
All I saw today, was our players always caught 15 metres behind their opponent when defending or our players being mugged 3 to 1 when attacking, not spreading, doing sweet FA running for most of the early part of the game. Getting raped by the umpires hardly mattered, the four fifty metre penalties was kind of a giggle considering the scoreline. Our blokes were just to stuffed to run and compete today, they looked shot from the outset and put zero pressure on them.

Winning the toss and kicking against a stiff breeze must have seemed like a good idea at the time. But Richmond captain Trent Cotchin has come under fire after Port Adelaide shot Sunday's AFL elimination final to pieces in the first quarter.
However Cotchin has found unlikely support from Port Adelaide dynamo Chad Wingard.
"The breeze was swirling around a bit... so it was a bit hard to pick an end," Wingard told SEN after the game.
"The breeze would go hard to one end, and then it would change around. Honestly, it kept changing and you had to adjust when you were kicking for goal."

Fair points on all. I agree that there was a difference in legspeed out there, but imo that was accentuated by them having the bit between the teeth and their relentless attack in waves on the ball created overlap which just made us look pedestrian.
Heard what Hinkley said - gotta give Cotch the benefit of the doubt but gee wiz I was behind the goals Port bombarded in the 1st qtr and the breeze was coming straight at us...
Anyhow - this is my take: First thing I'll touch on - I only saw a handful of players that handled the tempo today - regardless of how well or poorly they played you can see clearly which players brought the intensity today and those that didnt. Morris, Rance, Lids, Cotch, Ivan Houli(but he killed us with his skill errors early) and to a lesser extent Miles. Everyone else including Ellis, Martin, Edwards, Martin, Floss etc etc etc we're off the pace, don't care what the stats say, early when the game was on, only a handful were able to get their hands on a very hot ball. The rest were made to look like vfl players
Second: We met our superiors today. Some may not like hearing this but even at our best we couldn't have beaten Port today, hell our best would've struggled to get within 5 goals. They were fanatic, fast, strong and backed themselves in. From the moment the hoff spun on a dime and dobbed it from the boundary I thought oh stuff.
Coaches box: One thing I think dimma and his team do exceptionally well is pregame prep - its no coincidence we seem to get the jump on sides most of the time. Today however they got owned by Hinkley. First thing's first - the spare man - get rid of it, man them up do not allow opposition sides to have a spare- very rarely do I see us have the better of the 2 loose man in the game. We've done this quite well over the past 9 weeks, why today didn't we work harder at shoring it up?
Lids and Martin fwd - yes its worked exceptionally well the past 8-9 weeks having those 2 jets up fwd and having our hardworking midfield do the job - but a quick look at the historical stats will show a clear tale - Lids loves playing the power, has taken them apart many times, they just cant match up on him and once he was moved to midfield today - no coincidence he become one of our few winners. Against an A grade midfield in port on their patch in a final - you don't play your workman midfield against them - you play your bluechip talent. Lesson learnt horses for courses - they can still be played fwd but there will come times that they will be required in the trenches.
1st qtr errors: I haven't watched the replay and probably wont - but stuff me what was with the errors, they scored about 4-5 goals from unforced errors? Houli losing it while taking a bounce, martin fumbling, morris missing a target 10 metres away, Chaplin having 10-15 metres start and JOGGING to the ball, got tripped and they run into an open goal but still he should have attacked the fall of the ball harder, that was the blunder of blunders today and that's saying something... bah!
No excuses, they were too good and a better side than us but it was the classic case of a perfect storm, our boys were diabolical, they kicked about 8 goals from the boundary!! and it happened to happen in a final involving Richmond of course just to highlight it.
BTW I was on the flight home with the team, sitting right in front of Dimma and assistants, basically surrounded at the front of the plane. Chaplin and Dimma above and beyond looked shattered - Dimma angry, Chaplin very down, almost felt sorry for the bloke, Griff too. They were pleasant enough, but didn't chat too much, if there was a way to describe the group - they looked emotionally spent, but Lids is still a trooper, never turning down kids photo requests - hes a very polite young man
-
I reckon we played our final last week against the swans that game took a lot out of us and we looked out of puff after that game and then to travel again against power who run teams off the park.No excuses tho for a bad game like that to many guys cracked when the heat was on and went missing big time.We need some more leg speed tho and replace guys not up to it.
-
We did appear flat at the beginning and we never recovered. Had to start well didn't. For me it showed up the season long weaknesses in our side- the lack of leg speed and the lack of a genuine small forward. Our tackling was very poor. For me the players who stood up were Miles, Maric, Rance, Grimes, Lids and Edwards. Houli had an atrocious game-his disposal was very poor. Grigg was nowhere to be seen. Martin had a off day. Cotchin was well held. Gordon and Conca were okay. Liked the fact that Rance got into Gray's face in last quarter and was backed up by Maric. Need to bear this game in mind when recruiting over summer. Need a genuine tagger. Boak had a field day as he was not tagged.

Mark Robinson's dislikes from yesterday's loss:
DISLIKES
1. The back group.
Not a day to collectively go lame, but three of Richmond’s back six had poor ones. Jake Bachelor had duck eggs at half-time, duck eggs in a game where the ball was mostly inside their defensive half of the game. Morris didn’t have those Morris moments, the fierce tackling/pressure moments, and Troy Chaplin seemed lost in the occasion. Booed every time he touched the ball, which was nine times, and cheered three times for his three clangers including one when he fell over in the first quarter to allow Wines. He was tried forward as well, which didn’t work, culminating in him playing his worst game in the last 10.
2. Not all their fault, though.
The numbers suggest it was close, but Port ran harder — in numbers — and used the ball far better. The Tigers tried to clog the game midway through the first quarter, pushing four forwards up the ground, and still they couldn’t stop Port kicking 14 first-half goals as defenders were continually sucked to the contest. What was going on between the arcs? There had to be, at times, 28 players near the ball and yet Port were able to stream forward.
4. Blaming Cotch.
Mindset won this game, not the wind, and anyway Port kicked eight goals with it and six against it. On the ground itself, it appeared swirly and slightly favouring the city end. Let’s be honest, the wind didn’t help Port forwards find space in the first quarter.

Some great points on where we got it wrong and more importantly how stuffing good tHe Powere were.
Hats off, they played super finals footy and we can learn a thing or two.
Their intensity at the tigers reminded me of the dockers against the swans in the prelim last year.
I reckon we played our GF last week.
It showed.

Glad to be home.
For me the highlight was the drive down to Adelaide on Saturday with the scarf hanging out the window and the acknowledging of RFC fans on the trip down the honking of horns or stopping at Keith roadhouse and having a chat with an RFC fan. The road trip is great.
Further to that meeting up with mates in Adelaide, the pre game atmosphere and the beauty of the Adelaide Oval. That's where it ended.
Sunday was just terrible. Need to cut these glass half empty types.
We were outcoached, outhought, outrun, outackled, outclassed in every facet. :help

Cotch...You need to understand one thing when you play in Adelaide. You never ever, ever kick against the breeze.
A) you go with the wind every time you win a toss at Adelaide Oval
B) the wind always changes late in the afternoon in Adelaide, therefore you will find you have a bigger advantage by going with it in the 1st place.
C) it is always better to start anything you do in life with your advantages.
D) Cotch I have captained many things in life and you will learm from this. Don't take this to heart we all have to learn the hard way sometimes and one thing you learn is you can only get better from your mistakes in life. Trust me I have made plenty but have got stronger and better from them.
Cotch - You need to get some inside information from your loyal supporters when playing interstate in the future.

Mark Ricciuto in the Adelaide Advertiser ...
And Port, well, was that a finals game of football, or was that an “open” training session with black and yellow witches hats?
Seriously, why did Richmond bother making the trip.
They couldn’t have stuffed it up any more.
I can’t wait for someone to ask Trent Cotchin the logic behind his decision to kick into a stiff northerly.
I captained 142 games and never kicked into the wind. The only other bloke I know that did it was my old mate Shaun Rehn when he captained the Hawks one day at AAMI Stadium against the Crows.
By quarter time we were up by eight goals, the game was done and I’ve never let him forget about it.
Maybe Trent should have rung Rehny before he made the same fatal mistake.
Having said that, Port were very, very good.
But like their 103-point win against Carlton a fortnight ago, it’s hard to get a form line when the opposition have such a bad day.

That's a really good point and I don't think this has been asked yet.

Wind played no factor at all. It was the flatness of our team which undid us. In the second quarter Port still outscored us and they did not have the wind. We had a very bad day.

Agree, even if we kicked with the wind I reckon they would have had a couple goals on us at quarter time and then would have run over us in the second
-
So iI rewatches the first quarter and the majority of my notes go like this
Ellis miss tackle
Grigg miss tackle
Rance wins vital contest
Ellis miss tackle
Rance wins key contest
Chaplin miss tackle / chooses to give up

Sooooooo, anyone had the guts to watch the replay?

Sooooooo, anyone had the guts to watch the replay?
Why bother, what's the point of that? It's about going forward, not back.
-
Sooooooo, anyone had the guts to watch the replay?
Yep, watched it twice
Thought it was woeful being there.
Have to say it is one of those rare games where the TV coverage makes it looks even worse

it's a tiny bit better without the commentary!
-
I watch it while sticking bamboo splinters under my fingernails.

When it gets to much you can undergo bamboo torture or request to be water boarded. Should be good enough to get through to half time then.

What an imbecile
It's as bad a decision as anyone can make in their entire career.
-
Yes, mistake. So....,get over it? I'm sure he's learnt from it.

That doesn't surprise me coming from you

Thought it was woeful being there.

Not sure if I should take that as a positive as I could not even make it through it once

Yeah because Cotch would've made the decision all on his own without consulting anyone.
-
yep..that cotch(ledership group) decision has to rank as one of the great dunderhead decisions of all time...that and jacko retiring one nano second before the game of their lives
-
Yep, it cost us 13 goals.
-

would've won by 21 points 8)
-
Malthouse changes his entire game plan based on the wind
Do you think Mick would ofbhad a talk to the captain?
The wind from his arse?
Cause he likes to have control
I assure you he would have insured Maxwell/Buckley/cotchin would of kicked the right way.
What was dimma doing ? Media interview probably
Cotch stuffed up but he's only a kid. What we're the Richmond power to be doing? Amateur hour

Yeo
Choco dimma gale penny
Could not have made sure we don't kicked against. The gale or told jacko to stfu until after we lost the final
-
U know what.
4 pages of dissection is down on average.
I reckon we need to analyse the result properly before we move on
-
Bottom line is Port were the red hot team of the finals and probably should have beat the Dawks and would have pounded the swans if the made the GF

yes but we could have lost by less

Agree but not sure if it really would have meant anything if we did

You seriously think those cheap goals in the last quarter would've happened had we been in striking distance?
-
we started the game in striking distance, which is about when the cheap goals started :P
-
He was clearly saying Richmond would not of kicked soft goals at the eend
If we were not down 700 points
Which is true
-
Such a gutless list in 2014.
idiots like conca, Newman, Grigg all boasting walk in senior starts
Watching them capitulate like heartless cowards came as no surprise.
If reiwoldt had the talent Ablett senior had in one nostril,
I'd b a happier man.
sissyters.
-
More so, does Newman and Grigg's proven track record of downhill skiing, mental capitulation in important games, inability to stick tackles and seemingly zero desire to change the course of a game mean they have joined the likes of Tivendale and McMahon?
are they already there?
It's an interesting question. Let's be honest.
-

Yep. We didn't flatter ourselves that day but Port were far too good. No point blaming the toss of the coin. It didn't help but it made little difference to the result
-
Greg Tivendale and Chris Newman have played 400 games for Richmond combined. Have a bit of respect
-
grigg > Greg Tivendale
-
Not blaming the toss.
That's just a part of it.
PA were switched on and KNEW all they had to do
Was go hard and we would poo ourselves mentally.
Lol.
What a joke.
-
I wonder what Dockers fans posted after they played them.
-
Freo>RFC
-
but for how much longer
ross lyon has a history of going 'all in'
-
As we have a history of going half in.
-
As evident in finishing 8-9.
-
im not saying otherwise
but when milne didnt go hard enough at the bouncing ball - that was saint prem-window closed for about 15 years ...
im no expect but freos list doesnt look like being such a smooth transition
cheers rossy
i not saying i wouldnt take him as i would want to have a go at it within 2-4 years
