2014 Draft, pick 67: Daniel Butler

Richmond has selected North Ballarat Rebels forward/midfielder Daniel Butler with its fourth pick (selection 67) in the 2014 National Draft.

The 18-year-old impressed this season with his speed, endurance and ability to break the lines.

Injury caused him to miss the AFL Combine, but he did enough to impress the Tigers in 13 appearances at TAC Cup level, where he averaged 17 disposals and 5.6 tackles per game.

Butler also represented Vic Country at the 2014 National Championships, where he played six games and averaged 12 touches and four tackles.

Renew or join as a Richmond member for the 2015 season

“Daniel is an extremely quick midfielder or forward who can make things happen with his speed,” sad Richmond Recruiting Manager Francis Jackson.

“He can break the lines from stoppage but also use his speed defensively with his tackling.

“He also has good goal sense and has a knack of getting to the fall of the ball as a forward.”

Daniel Butler  (North Ballarat Rebels)

Born 3.6.1996, 181cm, 79kg

AFL biography: Exciting medium forward with extreme pace and lateral movement.  Very creative type, dangerous near goal and also has the ability to play midfield or in defence when required.  Averaged 11.8 disposals and 2.3 marks over six games in the under-18 championships playing with Vic Country.

Phil Partington, North Ballarat Rebels: "Daniel has elite pace and elite agility. Unfortunately he won't be testing, he's had knee surgery last week for a torn miniscus, but he played every game for Vic Country this year and was very damaging with his forward pressure. We would have liked him to kick more goals throughout the carnival but his pressure made him one of the best smalls and it was disappointing he got injured right at the end of the year for the Rebels, although he was able to stand up for us and play some good footy under pretty trying conditions."

how many live picks were there after this kid was taken. would be lucky to be half a dozen and one of them was ours.

not my choice and i would have taken 7 or 8 instead many of which didnt get drafted.
similar player who totally out performed butler and did well against men in the wafl was josh deluca.  geez kietel, markov, ramsey abbott. plus a few others in front of butler thanks.

Butler welcomes new home ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-01-23/butler-welcomes-new-home

* Playing all that footy last year was pretty full on. With year 12 as well, there was a lot of times I had to sacrifice things, like school or extra sessions. I think I handled it pretty well.  I had good time management and I just sorted everything out.

* The boys have welcomed me in and it’s made the transition so much easier for me. Coming in, I was nervous but they’ve all just accepted me and brought me into the Club and now I feel at home here. Preseason here has been tough. It’s nothing like I’ve ever done before. It’s a massive step up from everything, just training every day.  It’s a big difference from training at the Rebels twice a week. It’s good fun.  It’s good being around the boys and you know you’re getting fitter each day. Everyone’s just looking forward to Round 1.”

* My main goal is to get back to full training.  If I can get a NAB Cup game that’d be great but I’m not putting any expectations on myself. I’ve got to get into full training again and just show what I can do.

Need to play him up forward a bit this year. Has the goods to be a great small forward.

Sounds & looks to me like another Ben Nason.

Its highly unlikely that FJ has got a hit at pick 67. Has he had a win past first round yet?

I hope I'm wrong though but I'm not expecting much from this fellow.

He may have gone pick 67 but I know people that rated him much higher. Now I know why. Didn't set the world on fire but I saw something there which I didn't see in Drummond who we took earlier.

As one of the very few who thought Nason wasn't nearly as bad as everyone makes out, reckon Butler looks like he'll be better ..stronger, quicker and a better tackler for a start.....

Agree with Doc but I think he would be quite good as a rotational type player through the midfield.

Ok lads. Mail today is that he is not too far off being fit for 2nds but will be rested until towards very late in the season to get his body completely right.

This aside, has been smashing it in the gym and is one of those still growing post draft. Apparently eyeballing my source at 184cm and now officially 86kg, similar body shape to Dusty.

Coupled with his natural speed could be a salivating IN for 2016. Praying for an injury free preseason  :pray

Some players have elite pace but are to scared to use it (Lids was one I thought never took the game on enough with his leg speed) but last night Dan was not scared to use his.
Who caresif he gets caught occasionally, as long as he is trying to break the lines. That's the footy that will win you games.

Looking forward to seeing him back that up.

Dan Butler parlayed his strong pre-season showing on the training track and in intra-club hit-outs, into an impressive display for Richmond in its opening JLT Community Series match against Adelaide at Etihad Stadium last Friday night.

The slick, quick, small forward, who has been on the Tigers’ playing list for two years, but is yet to make his senior debut, finished with 17 disposals, including an equal team-high seven score involvements and one goal off his own boot.

He also recorded a game-high 20 pressure acts and 328 metres gained, which was the third most by any Richmond player over the course of the four quarters.

Butler repeatedly took the game on, and broke it open through his lightning pace, causing considerable problems for the Adelaide defence in the process.

On that form, Butler must be rated a real chance to win a senior opportunity with the Tigers early in season 2017.

Speedy, skilful, small forward Dan Butler has revealed a key reason why he’s now pressing strongly for his senior league debut with Richmond, in the big 2017 opening round clash with arch rival Carlton, on the back of an impressive body of work throughout the pre-season.

Butler again was a lively performer across the Tigers’ forward line, in last Sunday’s JLT Community Series win against Port Adelaide at Mt Gambier.

Although Butler had only nine disposals, he still managed to have an impact, finishing with an equal team-high five tackles, plus a brilliant, running soccer goal.

The 20-year-old is in the best shape of his time at Tigerland and, as a result, is reaping the benefits.

“I’ve been working on my fitness, mainly.  I haven’t been too fit over the past couple of years, so (I’m) working on fitness, along with skills, kicking, and finishing around goals,” Butler told ‘Roar Vision’.

Butler outlined what he believes are his primary on-field attributes . . . and those Tiger fans that have watched him in action during the JLT Community Series, would surely agree with his self-assessment.

“Tackling and speed, breaking lines, and stuff like that,” he said.

As much as Butler would love to play his first senior game in the season-proper with Richmond, after spending his first couple of years at the Club either injured, or playing at VFL level, he’s adopted a pragmatic approach to what lies ahead for him, football-wise, in 2017.

“That definitely would be a goal, but we’ll just take it week by week and see what happens,” he said.

The Herald-Sun lists Butler in their top 10 first year players for 2017.

DAN BUTLER

One of the only players not to make his debut for Richmond during last year’s horror season, Butler came from nowhere to play his first game in Round 1 against Carlton and never looked back. Alongside Daniel Rioli and Jason Castagna, Butler has helped transformed the Tigers’ forward half and in the process see it rise up the ladder and ultimately finish top four. Twenty-six goals from 20 matches is an outstanding return for the 20-year-old’s first season.

Dan Butler’s journey to Richmond Grand Final player started in the barber’s chair

JAY CLARK,
Herald Sun
September 30, 2017

DAN Butler’s football turnaround began at the barber shop.

Midway through last year, the speedy goalkicker had a bushy beard, surfy-style long hair but no contract for this season.

The feedback from the Richmond coaching staff was blunt. The No.67 pick in the 2014 draft had not played a senior game in his first year and a half at the club. He had to get better or start cleaning out his locker.

“I was going to get delisted,” Butler said candidly.

“I wasn’t playing the best footy and I had all this long hair and a beard and they said I looked completely different to what I used to. I was unrecognisable.”

So former development coach Mark Williams helped implement some changes which have put the North Ballarat product on a path to premiership glory at the MCG.

His frenzied pressure and sharpshooting in attack is the tip of the Tigers’ spear.

But before he undertook a gruelling off-season late last year, and mastered the art of kicking a tennis ball attached to a piece of string through some mini-targets created by Williams in the Punt Rd gym, Butler wanted to show Richmond he was serious about his footy.

So Williams suggested he try the clean-shaven look.

“I went in the next day thought I’d get rid of all the hair and have a trim and just have a fresh start, and that’s where it all started,” Butler said.

“My footy started getting better and I was luckily enough to get another contract.”

The target practice with the tennis ball was another one of Williams’s unconventional ideas, which Butler said worked a treat, as he launched the makeshift ball through the red squares thousands of times.

This year he has slotted 29 goals and 15 behinds from 22 games.

Butler also became Richmond’s top tackler in the VFL in the last part of last season and made his AFL debut in the Round 1 win this year.

Williams, who recently went to Butler’s 21st birthday in Ballarat, is immensely proud of his turnaround.

“One day he sets the camera up and sends me this video,” Williams said.

“It’s him kicking the ball through the target seven times in a row and he turns around and he just smiles at the camera.

“He’s brilliant. He’s shown so much commitment and resolve. He worked on his kicking and worked on his poise, and all the extra stuff getting over injuries and all of that stuff.

“He texted me when he got a new contract last year and he was just so happy.”

Coaching legend Malcolm Blight this week questioned whether the Tigers’ inexperience in attack would count against them today against Adelaide.

But Butler said Richmond’s young small forwards were relishing the big stage.

“All of us young forwards are pretty ready for it,” Butler said. “We think we can take it up to them.”

The 21-year-old had started the 2018 season in impressive style, with 13 disposals, six inside-50s, seven tackles, 48 pressure points, nine score involvements, three goals, three goal assists, and 344 metres gained in Richmond’s 26-point victory over the Blues.

“We did a lot of work over summer. We developed a good platform last year and we just wanted to keep building on that,” Butler told 3AW.

“As long as we’re putting pressure on, and not getting outmarked, then we’re doing our job.

“We’re all different shapes and sizes, so we can all be targets.

“We don’t care who kicks the goals, as long as the team’s kicking goals.”

Quick, slick small forward Dan Butler bounced back in impressive style for Richmond against St Kilda at the MCG last Saturday.

Butler’s output had been a bit down for a few weeks leading into the match. He’d kicked only one goal and averaged just 10.3 disposals in his previous three games.

But right from the outset of the Round 10 clash with the Saints, Butler was up and about.

Butler equalled his AFL career-high return of three goals. He’s now kicked three goals six times in his 34-game career with Richmond.

Butler, who turns 22 next Sunday (June 3), also finished with 17 disposals, which is the equal most he’s had since the 19 he picked up on debut for the Tigers at the game’s highest level in Round 1, 2017 against Carlton at the MCG.

To further emphasise Butler’s fine form on the day, he took three marks inside-50, among his total of seven marks, had eight score involvements, 38 pressure acts and 327 metres gained.

Even though he’s been down on goals prior to the last couple of games and the way he just seems to casually go for the ball which he did again in the third quarter if I remember correctly, the part of his game which iv been most disappointed with this season is his pressure and tackling.

Last nights game was back to his best in that area and he and his teammates were rewarded with goals directly from it. Keep it up Danny boy!

Was that when Cotchin kicked it to him?
Was one of the softest, worst efforts I have ever seen in my life. As it happened I didn't think it was soft because I initially thought it was Jack Graham going after it given how slow he was moving. Just didn't want to get to the footy first because contact was coming the other way. All his other defensive efforts were sensational but his attack on the footy leaves a lot to be desired.

sorry was in the second quarter can’t remember exactly who kicked it but it was a more a kick to space and butler had some distance on the closest opposition player so I thought he was on there with his speed but he just seemed to jog towards it. There was no one running from the other direction so wasn’t a case of being afraid of contact but the Essendon player behind him essentially made up the ground and collected the ball, just so casual this season.

I thought I’d be back in time (for finals), but it wasn’t to be," Butler said.

"Watching them throughout the finals, it was hard to watch because you want to be out there to try and help them out.

“I’ve been using that as motivation to concentrate on working hard and hopefully getting back in the side.”

“(Competition) is healthy and it only makes you want to push harder for your spot,” he said.

To do so, Butler is hard at work at improving his positional flexibility and his work up the ground.

“(The coaches) want me to nail my role down forward, I’ve been used as the defensive pressure forward and they want me to just nail that,” he said.

Dan Butler (Richmond)

It's been a difficult 2019 season for Dan Butler. The classy small forward was a lock for 18 months, winning a premiership in 2017 before his 2018 season ended halfway through with a bad ankle injury. Fully fit to start this year, Butler kicked just one goal in the first three rounds and failed to lay a tackle in round three before being dropped. He has spent the last three weeks in the VFL, held out of the side by tenacious rookie Liam Baker and to a lesser extent, Shai Bolton.

How does he get back in?

Butler has averaged 14 disposals and has kicked two goals from his two VFL matches (the Tigers had a bye in that period). He was named an AFL emergency for round four but not rounds five and six. Shai Bolton appears to be the next forward in line given Jack Riewoldt's injury. Butler's at his creative best when he is running hard and bringing teammates into the game with his silky skills. Given Richmond's strong small forward stocks, Butler may have to wait some time to force his way back in.

but

I actually feel sorry for him tonight. I just cannot understand why he was picked for this match. If it was to give him a chance at redemption, then he was done absolutely no favours. The conditions were never going to suit him. When he is in form, he relies on polished skills and I have seen or heard nothing of his efforts at VFL level that suggests he was in enough form to make an impact.

... Hardwick insisted there was a future at Punt Road for the out-of-contract premiership forward who has become a fringe player this season.

“He’s an important part of our make-up to who we are and what we do so from our point of view he’s a required player,” Hardwick said. “Where his contract is, I’m not too sure at the moment, but I love the way he plays.”

Richmond's Dan Butler remains hopeful of an AFL call up ahead of finals

Ben Hopkins
Ballarat Courier
14 Aug 2019

After spending much of the 2019 AFL season out of the Richmond Tigers team, Ballarat born-and-bred Dan Butler says he is remaining positive his time will come ahead of finals.

Butler has only appeared in seven of Richmond's 21 outings this AFL season, kicking five goals.

Speaking exclusively to The Courier, Butler, 23, says while it's not been the best year in terms of playing senior games, his confidence remains high two weeks out from finals.

"Obviously it hasn't been the ideal year in terms of playing in the VFL," he said.

"I think the main thing for me has just been trying to remain positive... we've got such a good group of guys at the club so they make that pretty easy."

The small forward has spent 14 games playing with Richmond's VFL side, which sits on top of the competition ladder.

Butler says his time playing in the VFL has helped him hone a different set of skills that will help him perform at him peak if selected to return to the AFL.

"It's just been about playing different roles, mainly through the midfield, so when I come back into the AFL I've got something new up my sleeve.

"You never know what's going to happen... you just need to be ready so that if you're called upon you can do what is needed.

"It's been great to buy into the VFL program, we've got a great coach in Craig McRea and he's created a great environment within the group."

The 2017 premiership player is only contracted with the Tigers until the end of the 2019 season. He says he believes going forward he has proved he has the talent to be an AFL player.

"I think I struggled at AFL level this year but I definitely think I'm an AFL player and while I've had stints in the VFL this year in the future I'll look to consolidate my spot."

DAN BUTLER (Richmond)

Out of favour and out of contract, the 2017 premiership player will have suitors and will hope a big finals series in the VFL only adds to the attraction given his raw speed.

The small forward market: Who's available, who should be a target

AFL.com.au
Marc McGowan
Aug 31, 2019

AFL.com.au has spoken to an AFL assistant coach to break down the potential targets, several of whom can offer something in the midfield as well.

Dan Butler (Richmond)

Age: 23 (3/6/1996)

Contract status: Out of contract

2019 numbers: 7 games, 0.7 goals, 3.9 tackles, 1.1 tackles inside 50, 20.1 pressure acts.

The expert: "Butler's real strength is his ability to get up the ground as a high half-forward and then reset back with speed. He's a really strong runner, with strong endurance and strong speed. His ball use around goal isn't always great, so that's a little bit of a downfall, but he plays an important structural role in the way Richmond plays. He's perfect for a team looking for more of a defensive, pressure-type forward who will give you a little bit on the scoreboard."

Carlton has met with Richmond premiership player Dan Butler as the club's pursuit of a small forward continues.

Butler, who is uncontracted at the Tigers beyond 2019, toured the club's facilities at Ikon Park on Wednesday, having fallen out of favour at Punt Road to play just seven AFL games this season.

Carlton have picks 8, 39 & 44. So they don't currently have a second rounder. IMO pick 39 at the very least should be what we get back. It's not like last year where we did a fire sale to free up cap space and bring Lynch in as a free agent. The Dogs ended up getting Lloyd for practically nothing (pick 64 from memory) which has been an absolute bargain for them giving he has been in their best 22 all year. Unlike Lloyd, Butler is younger, a premiership player (even if one now out of form/confidence) and would have multiple suitors searching for a small forward.

I think we're past the days of chasing the likes of Hampson and Yarran  :P. Although the Blues did give up a premiership ruckman in Griggy cheaply  ;D.

If we got pick 39 then it will probably end up in the long run with us effectively replacing Butler with Maurice junior.

DAN BUTLER

Rival clubs continue to ask how the Blues will get so many deals done if they land all their preferred targets, with Carlton interested in Butler (who has had a Carlton medical), Eddie Betts, Tom Papley and Jack Martin. Butler is an extremely handy player but has still only kicked 20 goals in 13 VFL games this year and five in seven in the AFL so he’s a good player with solid pressure, not a transformative talent.

Tiger faces tough call on Blues move

Herald Sun

Richmond forward Dan Butler wants to stay at Punt Rd but concedes that decision is “out of his hands”.

Butler, 23, met Carlton recently and will shortly jet to Thailand and Bali on Richmond’s footy trip with his future in limbo.

The clever goalsneak starred in the club’s VFL premiership, but played just one AFL game after the mid-season bye as he was squeezed out of the best 22.

Butler booted 21.16 from 15 VFL games, where he averaged a healthy 15.7 disposals and 92 SuperCoach points.

But with teenage sensation Jack Higgins making a bright start to his rehabilitation from serious brain surgery, and a growing chance to return to the field in the first half of 2020, it could be tough for Butler to fight his way back.

“I obviously got dropped a few times but I just wanted to go back to VFL and really buy into the program and play my role there and it ended up being a premiership,” Butler told the Herald Sun.

“I’m obviously out of contract, so hopefully I can find out in the next couple of weeks what I’m doing.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure yet. I’ve got a few big decisions to make — but I love this club, and I’d love to stay here.

“I’d love to stay, but it’s probably a bit out of my hands at the moment.

“Obviously, I want to play AFL footy, so that’s going to come into my decision, but this is just such a great club and it’s given me so many opportunities and I wouldn’t be here today without them.

“I’ve obviously got to make some big decisions at the end of the year.”

Butler — who played in the 2017 AFL flag — watched Saturday’s triumph at the MCG with injured teammate Jack Graham and was thrilled housemates Jayden Short and Liam Baker went home with medallions.

Butler’s defensive pressure remains his standout asset while he was also happy at boosting his disposal count this season.

Small forward Dan Butler has been linked with a move to Carlton and Balme can see it ending up as a similar situation to Ellis.

“I honestly don’t know the circumstances there, but he hasn’t been able to get a game, he’s a very good player, we’d love him to stay, but if something like that happens, that’s probably best for him as well, but we’ll deal with that as it comes along,” he said.

“There’s a commercial reality in the game. We can only have a certain amount on the list, we’ve only got a certain amount to pay and a certain amount we can play in the team so we have got to be realistic about that sort of stuff.”

Saints chase Dan Butler

St Kilda have entered the race for premiership forward Dan Butler while Collingwood remains hopeful of retaining small forward Jamie Elliott as the market for small forwards heats up on the eve of the trade period.

Butler played in the Tigers' 2017 premiership but fell out of favour midway through this season as Richmond opted for Shai Bolton to fill his role on their way to their 2019 flag with the 23-year-old Butler a crucial player in Richmond's VFL finals series.

Carlton and the Saints have met Butler as they seek players who can apply forward pressure, but the Blues are on the brink of regaining veteran Eddie Betts from Adelaide while they also try to land Tom Papley from Sydney and Jack Martin from Gold Coast.

Dan Butler

“We’re still working through the Dan one,” Carlton list manager Mick Agresta said.

“We catch up with a lot of players and managers and have some discussions.

“Although he was still playing, we just thought it would be the best time to lay all the cards on the table with Dan.

“We’ll work through that over the next period as well.

“He’s got to make a decision if he’d like to come to Carlton.

“To be fair, we haven’t had any further discussions since our meeting a couple of weeks ago.”

Dan Butler's manager Alex McDonald:

“He loves Richmond, but Richmond has even said if there wasn’t an opportunity at the club, they’d look at doing so. I think it points to him needing to consider his options.

"He's probably been a bit of a victim of being at a great club....he had a great year at VFL level. He loves the club and Richmond have said that if there wasn't an opportunity elsewhere they'd look at something."

“It’s probably down to Carlton and St Kilda. A couple of others have shown their interest.”

So considering he goes, what's he worth as a trade?
I firmly believe he is worth a second round pick (about 25-35).
Maybe we get involved in the Hill trade if it's Saints?

Probably a little less than that I think. More like 35-50.

Early 3rd rounder at best.

St Kilda don't have a 2nd nor 3rd round pick. After pick 6, their next pick is 59 at the start of the 4th round.

Carlton have picks 43 & 48 in the 3rd round. Their next pick is late 4th round #72.

If the Saints really want Dan and want to pip the Blues then maybe we can get in on the Jack Stevens trade.
Geelong <--- Stevens
St Kilda <---- Butler
Richmond <---- pick 37 (from Geelong)

St Kilda is losing Bruce, Stevens and possibly Acres so they'll pick up picks from them.

Gain Dogs' pick 32 & future 3rd rounder (Dogs) for Bruce & their future 4th rounder to Dogs === (Equivalent to pick 25 in draft points).

Gain Cats' pick 37 for Stevens to Geelong.

Gain Brad Hill & Freo's pick 26 for pick 6, Acres, future 3rd rounder (Dogs) to Freo === (Eq. pick 13 combined or Hill for pick 10 and Acres for pick 53).

Gain Zak Jones for pick 26 to Sydney.

Gain Paddy Ryder for pick 59 to Port.

Gain Dougal Howard & Port's picks 66, 67, 68 & 71 for picks 32 & 37 to Port ===  (Eq. pick 22)

Gain Butler for their future 3rd rounder to Richmond.

Not my idea. Just added Butler into this tweet: https://twitter.com/bitey26/status/1181859015942230016

The fact is the club can’t keep the uncontracted players and so have no leverage in any deals. We are at the limit of our TPP and can bring in 18 year olds because they cost less. We also can’t play them in the seniors because we need to give games to Naish, Ross, RCD, CCJ as well as contracted guys like Graham and Kamdyn....... :shh

I’d be looking at Richmond’s Dan Butler as a small forward option. While he’s not a star, he does provide that manic forward pressure and he’s clever around goals. I think he’d come pretty cheaply in a trade, too. The Demons could get him for a fourth-round pick, currently No.60.

The Ryder deal will go through for a late selection that will not affect St Kilda’s suite of draft picks.

Butler’s acquisition would also only be for a later selection.

Carlton not interested in Butler unless they miss out on Papley and Martin.

Richmond aware Butler wants to play with St Kilda in 2020.

We're apparently happy for him to "walk" to the Saints.

A 4th/5th round pick will get it done.

We can not afford to have a player like Butler, premiership player or not, in his 3rd contract, meaning on ok money, playing in the twos.

We basically just need them gone for salary cap purposes.

Same with McIntosh and Menadue and Lloyd and Miles from last year. We replace those guys with first year players and it opens up 2, 3, 400k.

Sure our depth suffers but nobody really cares about reserve premierships.

That’s why your favourites in George, Lambert and Short are so important to our club. Cheap, but play a pretty major roll around our superstars.

I don’t expect you to like them anymore than you do but you seem smart enough to understand their worth surely??

Trade Wrap: Silver service for Butler, could this be the Saints' circuit-breaker?

Mitch Cleary and Marc McGowan
afl.com.au
Oct 11, 2019 6:28PM

RICHMOND will do all it can to assist Dan Butler in landing a new home, with the Tigers aware his preferred destination lies at St Kilda for 2020.

Left out of this year's flag, the 2017 premiership forward has expressed a desire to continue his career elsewhere after being starved of opportunities at Punt Road.

While the Saints are interested in Butler, he falls fifth in line of their priorities behind Port Adelaide pair Dougal Howard and Paddy Ryder, Fremantle's Bradley Hill and Sydney's Zak Jones.

AFL.com.au understands Butler will walk for next to nothing, with the Tigers well aware of St Kilda's long list of demands this Telstra AFL Trade Period.

Butler, who is currently holidaying with Tigers teammates, has met with several clubs including the Saints and Carlton.

His manager Alex McDonald of Hemisphere Management revealed to Telstra AFL Trade Radio this week he was forced to clarify mixed messaging from the Blues this week around his client.

Blues GM of list management and strategy Stephen Silvagni said on Monday the Blues had little interest in Butler, only minutes before list manager Michael Agresta admitted the club was still working through a process around the small forward.

Should the Blues miss out on Sydney target Tom Papley, their intent for Butler could increase again.

Richmond's asking price falls in line with deals it did last year for Corey Ellis and Anthony Miles (combined for a swap of future third-round picks with Gold Coast), Sam Lloyd (pick 64) and Tyson Stengle (68).

The Tigers' currently hold picks 19, 38, 39, 41, 75 and 77.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-10-11/trade-wrap-silver-service-for-butler-could-this-be-the-saints-circuitbreaker

Richmond premiership small forward Dan Butler is also looking at a move to Moorabbin or Princes Park, but he will need to wait to see what happens with the others first.

Reckon Castagna is our best small fwd especially with pressure,  if he could just kick straight!!!!! he would become a complete player/fwd.
Reckon he is in front of Rioli but that aint saying much in itself. Thought Rioli had a very poor season and if he cannot add more to his game by becoming a decent midfield contributor could be in trouble down the track.

Lambert is a tad overrated imo by a lot of tiger supporters but he has been very consistent and earns a spot imo.

Short well he is the one i have issues with. He is keeping better players out of the team and is just so defensively poor and dare i say it soft.
Ellis copped it big time and this bloke should not be immune from the same sort of criticism.

I wonder what we would get for him if we shopped him around.

Dunno why we let them go so cheap honestly.

Solid player, years of footy ahead of him, premiership medal, proven goal kicker, decent VFL form keeping the 22 honest. Great depth.

I'd be telling Saints to  get pick 45, 51 or 53 from WB as part of their deal for Bruce, then pass that on to us for Butler.

We're playing the long game by the look of it. Showing we care more about our players and their best interests even if they are leaving will be seen positively by any future free agents and recruits looking for a club to move to. They'll more likely choose Richmond over opposition clubs (eg: Tom Lynch) given the way we've gone about things on and off-field over the past 3 years which has built a reputation across the footy world of a strong happy club and culture that people want to belong to.

Compare us and our open honest approach to how other clubs have disgracefully treated their players during this trade period. We're not holding our players at our club against their will as pawns to ransom or sneakily out of the blue offering them up for trade behind their backs after publicly saying all year how much they were love and wanted.

Becoming No.1 in the AFL hasn't been a fluke. It has been a total positive cultural shift. If letting a couple of fringe players go for nix because that is in their best interests means we get another Lynch, Pickett, Stack, Soldo, etc ... all for free in the near future leading to another flag or two then I won't be complaining  :thumbsup.

St Kilda now have picks 10, 76, 82 from this draft and a 1st, 2nd and two future 4th rounders (theirs & Port's).

So if it's a simple trade of a late pick for Butler then it's a choice of 76 this draft or one of the two future 4th rounders.

Saints list boss, James Gallagher didn't say much at all about the Butler trade except to say it's progressing "okay".

St Kilda now have picks 10, 76, 82 from this draft and a 1st, 2nd and two future 4th rounders (theirs & Port's).

So if it's a simple trade of a late pick for Butler then it's a choice of 76 this draft or one of the two future 4th rounders.
I'd take Ports next year 4th rounder.

Meantime, Butler's move to St Kilda isn't expected to be as complicated.

"We've had some good conversations with Dan, his management and Richmond," Gallagher said.

"In a perfect world we can get something that's a really fair reflection of Dan's talent and ability in the next 24 hours as well."

It's pick 58 rather than 57 but Mitch Cleary said the first two parts above will happen: Geelong will get pick 58 from the Suns for Zac Smith and then ontrade it to St Kilda for Stevens.

So potentially we could get pick 58 for Butler.

We won't be getting pick 58 as St Kilda has traded it to Freo. They also traded their future 4th rounder.

Are we getting a future 3rd rounder for Butler as St Kilda now has two of them?

Probably higher than I thought we'd get at the start of today  :-\.

We can still do pick swaps on draft night so that may be the path we're going down if we're left with four mid-draft picks 38, 39, 41 & 51.

Everyone is allowed to have an opinion about players and can post as such. We don't have to agree or like the opinions posted

But the abuse and baiting generated from those opinions will not be tolerated. Either will the egging on of the baiting and / or abuse.

Hence, the SNIP.

Finally keep the fueds off the forum. Stick to the topics without the abuse or baiting. You don't like a poster ignore them it isn't hard

Butler explained how he was able to pose for a photo on social media with a St Kilda jumper from the Indonesian holiday island so soon after officially becoming a Saint.

"One of the boys [former Richmond teammate] Jayden Short picked one up from a Bali market for about 10 bucks I think earlier in the day and had it ready for me," Butler laughed.

Butler began contemplating a move from Richmond in the second half of the season as he fell out of favour at Punt Road, with the likes of young guns Sydney Stack and Shai Bolton cementing their spots in the senior team. He almost ended up at Carlton before settling on the Saints.

"I had a meeting with them [Carlton] as well [and] obviously got caught touring the club which wasn't great for me," he quipped. "It got close but in the end it wasn't to be."

Butler insisted Richmond had no issues with him meeting with the Blues during the season.

"I was upfront with them the whole time, they know it's a business as well and those things are going to happen so I didn't hide anything from them," he said.

The premiership forward admitted it was tough to watch the Tigers win their second flag in three years this year and not be a part of it, but he was rapt for the players who were able to taste premiership success for the first time.

"My two housemates Jayden Short and Liam Baker got to experience [a flag] for the first time and that's really what I tried to focus on rather than me getting down in the dumps," he said.

In the end, St Kilda wooed the 23-year-old over to Moorabbin.

"I had a couple of meetings with the list manager and met 'Ratts' [Saints coach Brett Ratten] as well and they were just very welcoming of me and really believed in me and my strengths as a footballer," he said.

Title: Why Richmond Allowed Dan Butler to Depart
Post by: WilliamPowell on July 23, 2020, 09:04:41 PM
WHY RICHMOND ALLOWED STARRING SAINTS FORWARD TO DEPART

BY ANDREW SLEVISON

One of the recruits of the year to date is Dan Butler who is in brilliant form for St Kilda.

The small forward fell down the pecking order at Richmond over the past two years playing just 22 games across 2018 and 2019 despite having kicked 30 goals in the 2017 premiership season.

In seven games for the Saints in 2020, the 24-year-old has kicked 13 goals to sit just two behind the leaders in the Coleman Medal race and his form would undoubtedly have him in All-Australian contention to this point.

The Saints gave up only pick 56 in last year’s draft for the quick and classy crumbing forward with the departure from Punt Road coming as a case of bad timing more than anything else from a Tigers viewpoint.

Asked on SEN Breakfast what goes through his mind when he sees Butler playing so well for the Saints, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick replied with an audible groan accompanied with a laugh, before adding: “Well we sort of knew he was a good player.

“But we really had a great depth of small forwards.

“It wasn’t as if we didn’t want him, he just ran out of contract at the wrong time. We had a great deal of small forwards that were contracted and unfortunately Dan was the guy that wasn’t contracted.

“We’ve got Daniel (Rioli), we’ve got Jason Castagna, we’ve got Shai Bolton, Sydney Stack, all those types. He was the one that was out of contract.

“He’s a wonderful player. He’s got AFL traits that are off the chart. He’d be winning the Saints best and fairest at the moment. Wonderful kid, wonderful family and I still send him a text, ‘Well done’.

“He’s just smashing it which is great for him.”

Butler was held goalless in his first game for his second club all the way back in Round 1 but has kicked two or more in five of the next six games, including three against the Tigers in a big win in Round 4 and another three in Monday night’s win over Adelaide.

The sixth-placed Saints next take on ladder leader Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

I think from memory he had some injuries and maybe a hampered preseason or was that in 2019?

I always thought he was the best if the three amigos although it didn’t look like it last year when he struggled to make the senior side and when he did he didn’t take his opportunity.

It’s a shame we couldn’t keep him as he made all our small forwards better.

we won a flag without him (2019) having any impact at all, so he was never going to net us a high pick based on our clubs performance that year.

Had we had not won in 2019 it would be a different conversation now.

Couldn’t understand why we kept Gorge and not Butler , both Gorge and Bulter can have shockers and be match winners to be fair. And Bulter was unlucky to be coming  out of contract.
Most of the players that have left in the last few years have been good for their new sides , got to be
A vote of confidence in our system.

Because george was miles better than him post 2017. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again people wondering why butler was traded have very short memories. Was in and out of the team in 2019 and when he was in he was very very poor bit like how Rioli is going atm. By the end of the season he couldn’t there were so many ahead of him that he couldn’t get a game and with him being out of contract he chose to look elsewhere.

I always thought he was just out of favour and low on confidence in 2019.

17-18 was great.

People are more forgiving of Rioli and Stack for their low confidence but I guess the reality is we appeared to have surplus quality small forwards at the time.

Rioli out of form now, Bolton better in the mid, Higgins poor since return, George OK but not having a great year. I'd be giving Butler a game this year for sure ahead of some of our blokes.

Good on him for taking his opportunity.

Maybe he was getting lazy and not working hard enough. He gets traded and pulled his finger out and is now reaping the rewards for maximum effort.

Only Butler really knows the reason he didn’t play more senior footy after 23 games in 2017 he still played 15 in 2018 But only 7 games last year.

He now looks to have returned to the footy we saw him play in 17 and 18.

What made him drop off so much last year, only he knows because he wasn’t playing well at all, especially not enough to get a senior call.

I thought Bulter had more to offer until he lost confidence / was out of favour , George didn’t then and doesn’t get the ball enough for my liking. He needs to do the pressure acts to keep his spot but he is not on his own

Oh Dan, he had one set shot from 30 out ... a rank shank that was lucky to scrape in for a point!

That's when I knew nothing much had changed!

Still calls all his team mates 'Hand ball'!    :thumbsdown

Lol.

I think a fair bit has changed mate.

He’s twice the player that he was with us.

He kicked four and was the difference last night.

I bet he will be off St Kilda’s in 3 years.

Average player- glad he is doing well but also happy he is gone.

If plays last year, maybe we loose Bolton due to lake of opportunity- and I know who I would rather.

Im thinking maybe it’s a similar case to jay Schulz? Schulz mentioned it was only after offloaded from us  he knuckled down at port and really trained hard.

Could have been the reality check he needed when moved to saints

I would have kept butler instead of castagna. Atleast butler xan kick goals instead georgies 0.5 efforts.

Yep. He looks really fit and motivated.

Good on him I reckon.

Not sure if it was related to injuries, but he looked disinterested last year lazy and didn't have no impact.Happy with Aarts to be honest.

The bookies knew he was in for a shocker. Blew out to $18 from $12 for first goal b4 the bounce
