He isn't Craig Lambert's son, but he will be a very good pick-up IMO. If he doesn't make it it won't be lack of effort that holds him back, put it that way. He will have an almighty crack.

Like the look of this bloke but you have to wonder if he can step up to afl. Dominates the VFL sure but a lot of guys do who can't make it at afl standard.
Fingers crossed for him though.

Richmond has selected Williamstown midfielder Kane Lambert with its third pick (selection 46) in the 2014 Rookie Draft.
The 23-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the VFL competition for the last few years, initially with the Northern Blues, and most recently with Williamstown.
A hip injury hampered Lambert’s start to the 2014 season, however he put together an outstanding finish to the season.
In the Seagulls’ semi-final, he collected 32 disposals, 17 clearances, 15 inside 50s and kicked four goals.
While playing for the Northern Blues in 2013, he won the Club Best and Fairest and was named the VFL’s Fothergill-Round medallist.
“Kane had a slow start to this season, due to injury, but over the second half of the season he returned to his 2013 form, where he had some dominant performances, including in the finals,” said Richmond Recruitment Manager Francis Jackson.
“He competes well, and has a burst of speed to break away from the stoppages.
“He is also a dangerous player around goals.”

KANE Lambert’s long wait for an AFL opportunity is over after Richmond swooped on the star midfielder in Wednesday’s rookie draft.
The 23-year-old said earlier this year that he was “pretty close” to being drafted in 2013 after a stellar season with Northern Blues in the VFL.
Lambert made the move to Williamstown in the off-season after a tug of war for his services, with his switch to Burbank Oval only ratified after mediation between the Seagulls and Blues
Lambert experienced a slow start to the season because of hip surgery last summer and was forced to wait until Round 3 to make his debut for Williamstown.
But he produced a scintillating second half of the campaign, highlighted by a best-on-ground performance against Werribee in the semi-final.
Lambert gathered 32 touches, 17 clearances, 15 inside 50s and booted four goals in a performance described by Williamstown coach Andrew Collins as “one of the best individual games I’ve seen at a state league level”.
The Tigers landed Lambert, who boasts an unquestionable appetite for the ball and the ability to kick an important goal, at pick 46.
Lambert has a bevy of fans who have pushed his case for a chance at the top level, including dual North Melbourne premiership coach Denis Pagan, who coached him at TAC Cup club Northern Knights.
Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon said he was thrilled Lambert had graduated to the AFL ranks.
“He’s just too good a player to be playing VFL,” Dixon said.
“We’re just rapt that he’s actually got the opportunity. It’s hard to think of many people who have worked harder and had that many setbacks along the way.
“We’re rapt as a footy club that we’ve been able to help him over the line.”
Lambert had previously been overlooked four times, but his persistence paid off.
“I wouldn’t say it’s the poorest year he’s had, but his season was certainly nowhere near as good as his 2013 season,” Dixon said.
“Obviously his hip injury hampered him and he missed games along the way, but some of his individual performances in the second half of the year … he just looked a class above and showed that he had got over his hip problem.
“When he’s playing at that level there are not too many VFL players who can match him.”

I've seen him play a few times coz I have a friend who's involved at Willi. You blokes on here get into Grigg and Houli and Petterd etc and I don't blame you. Thing about those guys is they play well when Richmond does. If we're playing crap you can count on them to be awful.
The players who catch my eye are the ones who lift above that. This bloke lead his team to one of the great comeback victories you'll see. He just dragged his teammates along with him.
Not saying he'll make it but I'm rapt we're giving him a shot at it.

DUAL premiership coach Denis Pagan says Richmond rookie Kane Lambert reminds him of a right-footed Anthony Stevens.
And Pagan — who coached the 2009 Northern Knights best-and-fairest winner in the TAC Cup — tipped Lambert to join James Podsiadly, Michael Barlow and Sam Dwyer as celebrated VFL success stories.
Lambert, 23, was overlooked for a fifth national draft in six years last Thursday (in 2010 he became disillusioned and didn’t play) but won his chance with the Tigers’ last live rookie pick, No.46.
“They’ve made a very wise choice,” Pagan said.
“It’s not often you go overboard but I just think he’s an outstanding player and I was flabbergasted he wasn’t picked up for the last couple of years.”
Pagan said Lambert had “special attributes” and when asked about the parallels with North Melbourne champion Stevens, he said: “He’s pretty tough, he’s pretty hard and he’s never beaten.
“If you’re going into a battle I reckon you’d be comfortable with Kane Lambert next to you.”
In 2013 Lambert averaged 26 disposals, won the VFL Rising Star award and finished a vote off the league best-and-fairest medal but, despite strong AFL interest, he was again passed up.
Lambert crossed from Northern Blues to Williamstown on a big transfer fee this year and while a hip injury plagued him early, a scintillating finish was enough for the Tigers.
“His football smarts are exceptional,” Williamstown football manager Chris Dixon said.
“His ball-winning ability is exceptional, he’s clever and he’s sharp around goals.”

Dixon said Lambert was ready to make an impact at AFL level in a similar vain to Anthony Miles, who the Tigers rookie-listed last year.
“Miles also dominated the state leagues and while he was criticised for (lack of) pace at times, Kane has too but once you look beyond that they are extremely good footballers who do a lot of things right.”
After missing the 2009 draft Lambert returned to football in 2011 and shot to VFL prominence in a breakout finals campaign, where he tagged Travis Colyer, Ricky Dyson and Myles Sewell.
Lambert formed an alliance with former Blue Jordan Russell and has been touted as an AFL prospect by his four VFL coaches.
Dixon said Lambert’s matchwinning 32-disposal, 15-clearance and four-goal semi-final this year illustrated his reputation as a big-game player.
“And he’s one of the best characters I’ve ever met in football. He was a potential captain,” he said.
Dixon and Pagan lauded the 178cm onballer’s courage and goalkicking ability.

I agree YBB. Sure the proof of the pudding is in the eating but IMO this recruitment period has been one of the most balanced and successful for sometime. We now have a solid core of experienced players which is allowing us to build for the future instead of trying to chase overrated recycled's in an effort to attain immediate success.

My next door neighbour(mad hawks supporter) plays cricket with this bloke, is stoked for him as everyone that knows him felt he deserved a crack at afl. Was devastated when he didnt get drafted after TAC cup but luckily for him he came back to the game and has now got his chance.

blokes that can work their way through adversity and disappointment are the blokes you want when the chips are down, as he has shown in the VFL finals last year.
It's just a matter of if he can now step up to the next level.

I'd take Thomarse ahead of Arnot IMO, even then I'm eh about him over the rest except for Pettard in the guts (don't mind the guy for depth but should be no where near the midfield)

Except Miles was never touted as a near certainty to step into the midfield and kick arse by other clubs, including us. We got lucky with how well he developed.
Lambert (now that he's drafted to Richmond) is being hyped as a near certainty to be Miles v2.0. Yeah. Slipped all the way to out of the draft proper to rookie pick 46.....

I counted 39 out of a maximum 40 on the senior list so we can only upgrade one this year. We actually have 6 rookies which makes our total list 45 but I'd say Soldo is catergory B and outside the list as clubs can only have a max. of 44 on their list otherwise.

yep pleases me a lot.ticks just about every box when looking at a state leaguer. weather he succeeds or fails i congratulate the club on taking him, i wish we would do it a bit more with the state leaguers.
he has a bit of competition with so many similar sized players i certainly dont think we need anymore 178cm - 182cm players.

* He’s been sensational. He’s a very good runner, has a strong body and is ready to play AFL footy. I think he’s an exciting prospect and he’ll add more depth to our midfield. If the opportunity presents, from what I’ve seen. He’ll have no problems slotting in. I spoke about it with him while we were up in Townsville and the fact that he played against so many AFL-listed players in the VFL, he feels really comfortable and ready to go. He’s really fit at the moment and he’s come into the Club really well, which is all he can do.

well for 3 yr hes kicked the arse of most afl players hes come up against. a very good start point id say.
it funny we watch vfl wafl sanfl and we see the blokes who regularly dominate afl players, they are winning both club and state b&fs and have all the right physical attributes to make it at afl yet yr on yr are never looked at. its not just richmond its most afl clubs and their recruiters theres a paranoia about age and it filters thru all of footy.

THIS TIME last year Anthony Miles was in a similar position to Richmond rookie Kane Lambert – he was desperate for a senior opportunity and prepared to do everything he could to make it happen.
Now Miles, an established first-choice midfielder under Damien Hardwick, thinks Lambert can follow his own lead and lock down a position in Richmond's side in 2015.
Lambert, drafted at pick No.46 in last year's rookie draft, made a considerable impact in his Tigers debut in the club's first NAB Challenge hit-out against the Western Bulldogs at the Whitten Oval on Saturday.
The 22-year-old had 15 touches, eight of which came in the first quarter, and demonstrated the kind of ball-winning ability he was renowned for during stints at VFL clubs the Northern Blues and Williamstown.
"I truly believe that he can play at AFL level and have an impact," Miles said of Lambert at the club's Family Day at Punt Road Oval on Sunday afternoon.
"There's one spot on our rookie list and Kane certainly put his best foot forward yesterday."
Miles said it was common sense for club recruiters to take an interest in the state leagues, considering the players available to pick from have a good knowledge of the game and the type of build to cope with the demands of AFL football.
"There's not too many draft picks that have to come in and have an impact straight away," Miles said.
"They can spend a couple of years in the gym. Whereas with mature bodies you can get in the VFL – and Kane's a perfect example – they're ready to go and have an impact straight away
"He's been a star in the VFL the last three years and I'd love to see more of those guys get a crack."

I suspect he will play the Morris ( King) role and will give Titch a rest in the middle from time to time, A natural forward who will punish if not checked closely. Has a burning desire to make it at the top level and seems to have all the attributes.

I agree, playing him forward with bursts through the mid field is where he need to be.
I very much doubt he has the tank yet for a full time midfield roll.

I'd hate to play my debut game in front of 70k+ at the G if it was my job to shut down Chris Yarran on live national tv! Seems like too much for a first gamer. I don't think Lambert has the leg-speed for that job anyway.
I'd give Titch first shot at Yarran to match him for speed & agility, even if it takes away an attacking option. Malthouse would love to see us put a defensive plodder on Yarran, that would just be the signal for Yarran to run & carry all night!
I can see Lambert playing as a small forward & second line midfielder, but I can't see him matching it with Yarran in a foot race.

BRETT Deledio says mature-aged recruit Kane Lambert has made a strong case for a Round 1 debut against Carlton on Thursday night.
Lambert, 23, joined Richmond from VFL club Williamstown in the rookie draft and has had a standout pre-season.
Deledio said like most recruits, Lambert had worked tirelessly to prove his worth.
“He’s certainly put his hand up,” Deledio said.
“I’m glad I’m not in the position of the match committee ... He’s an outstanding kid, doesn’t say too much just lets his footy do the talking for him. (He’s been) head down, bum up.”

ive already said this but have to say it again. i congratulate the taking of this bloke from a state league. weather he makes it or not we need to do more of this type of thing.
i could find another half dozen who are better than many players on our list running around in the wafl alone there is no reason why we should not be giving blokes who dominate state leagues and have the attributes to play afl a go.

Just watched the replay again and he was more involved than I remember on the night. Wasn't up with the pace of the game but that's very common with a lot of new players. I'm happy to give him a week or 2 more yet, even if only to give him a proper taste so he can go back and work on the things that he needs to.

I reckon he knows how to play the game. We have yet to see to what standard he can play. Time will tell but I get the feeling he could be a handy squad player probably a player ranked 23-30 on a list you can trust to do a job at some point.

Think we might be expecting too much too soon from this guy. A rookie one minute and most expecting the world from him so soon after being elevated. Give him some time, has the smarts no doubt, the pace of AFL will take a little while but really think he can make a valuable contribution in the future be it this season or next.

FIRST-year Tiger Kane Lambert is relishing his belated chance at AFL level after producing his best game of the season in Sunday’s 16-point win over the Saints.
Lambert collected 19 disposals and kicked an important goal during Richmond’s 10th victory of the season.
The mature-age rookie entered the AFL system later than most draftees and at 23, he says he is making up for lost time.
"(Richmond coach Damien Hardwick) showed a lot of faith in me, playing me in round two,” Lambert told Crocmedia on Wednesday.
"It was unfortunate to get injured (he suffered a severe shoulder during his debut against the Western Bulldogs) but that’s footy.
"But to come back and play one game in the VFL before coming straight back in is something I’m very fortunate for and I’m very grateful, so I’m just determined to repay him for that faith in me."
Lambert was overlooked in several drafts despite excelling at junior level with the Northern Knights and then with VFL teams the Northern Blues and Williamstown.
Despite fearing he may never be drafted, Lambert said he was calm before last year’s event.
"It was probably the most relaxed I’d ever been going into a draft," he said.
"I wasn’t expecting anything and I was really just watching and hoping that a couple of mates might get picked up.
"I ended up going with pick 46 (in the rookie draft) and about 10 minutes after that finished I got a call saying they wanted me on a plane to Townsville at 5.30 that night, so it was quite surreal the way it all happened.
"About 6am the next morning I was doing the hard yards next to Dustin Martin and Jack Riewoldt in Townsville, so it was a pretty crazy 24 hours.”
The Tigers this week have a crucial clash with ladder leaders Fremantle in a game that could propel Richmond into to the top four.
"I’m definitely looking forward to it," Lambert said.
"Fremantle are a quality side and very disciplined so hopefully we can play like we did last time against them.
"It’s going to be Troy Chaplin’s 200th and hopefully it’s a big crowd down at the ‘G on Saturday afternoon."

Just saw a bit of footage from the flirts quater when Lids caught Frawley holding the ball 20 meters from goal, 10 in from the boundary. The ball popped out and Lambert picked it up and could have quickly had a snap but had the presents of mind to stop and let Lids take his free kick at goal which he put through the middle.
It's small things like this that shows me he has a footy brain..and a future at this club.
Nothing surer if it was Ellis he would have had a snap and most likely missed the goal..

I think he (Mitchell) had a lot of handballs, as compared to kicking. Sam Mitchell, for mine, is one of the barometers of Hawthorn. If you can limit his influence you can help yourself win the game and I thought young Lambert did a great job. He missed six or seven drafts and he’s come in and provided a really good impact for us thus far.

* He’s a similar player to Nathan Foley, I reckon, and we’ve probably missed that this year. He cracks in and he’s got a bit of speed on the outside and that bit of spark. In terms of his opportunity, I think he missed something like six or seven drafts. It’s a great story and he’s certainly taken that at the moment and, like everyone at the Club, I’m rapt for him. He’s going really well.

After dominating the VFL for four years with the Northern Blues and Williamstown, Kane Lambert was given a chance at AFL level by the Tigers in the rookie draft late last year. After a lacklustre debut against the Bulldogs in round two, the 23-year-old spent nine weeks on the sidelines with a shoulder injury. He returned to senior football in round 13 against the Swans, and has kept his spot ever since. Had a good game today. Still think he struggles at times when the heat is really on. Not convinced he should play primarily in the guts if we had C. Ellis and Titch available (sub would be a good role for him) but at this stage he's earning his opportunities and contributing well.
C Ellis is hardly ahead of him as an inside mid right now. On exposed form lambert is 12-18 months ahead of him. Thems the bald facts , all bluster aside :shh
You would hope a 24 year-old would be at least a year ahead of an injured 18 year-old...

Hes had 17. 19. 19. 22. 27. Touch games since his injury. Given hewas most courage. Or something in the vfl. Along with a best and fairest hopefully he isnt a flash in the pan.
He seems to be good along with our better mids - cause he does a bit of everything and looks fairly smart. Tough. Skillfull

KANE Lambert had just come off a poor game and was determined to make amends in Williamstown’s VFL semi-final against Werribee.
Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon saw a “steely resolve” in Lambert that day with the end result a match-winning 32-disposal and four-goal display, and ultimately selection by Richmond in last year’s rookie draft.
It is no surprise to Dixon that just nine games into his AFL career the tough ball-getter is already an invaluable member of the Tigers’ midfield.
Lambert has averaged 20.8 possessions and 89 rankings points in the past five rounds and he has become a damaging player forward of centre.
Over those five matches, the 23-year-old ranks second at the Tigers for score involvements (7.4 per game), and fourth for contested possessions (10.0 per game) clearances (3.6 per game) and inside 50s (3.2 per game).
“We always thought he had it in him. It’s no surprise to see him come in (to the AFL) and have such an impact,” Dixon said.
“He does have that ability to find the football and he’s shown that at every level that he’s been at.
“Obviously it stands out a lot more at VFL level but I think hopefully it’s starting to be recognised at AFL level.
“It’s great to see him doing so well at Richmond.”
Lambert played his best game in last Sunday’s 83-point win against Gold Coast, accumulating a personal-best 27 possessions, five clearances, six inside 50s, two goals, two assists and eight score involvements.
He was the most influential player in the first half against the Suns with 15 disposals.
His two goals for the game were a mix of skill and courage — the first with a snap from a forward stoppage in the opening quarter and the second after taking a mark running against the flight of the ball early in the fourth.
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said Lambert had worked hard to get where he is now.
“We all know his story. He’s taken a little bit of time to get here but he doesn’t look out of place,” Hardwick said post-match.
“It’s a real credit to him. He works incredibly hard.
“The upside for us is he’s still got some areas of improvement that will take him to a new level as a player.
“He’s earned his place.”
That story Hardwick referred to is Lambert being overlooked for five national drafts.
Lambert did not nominate for the 2010 draft after he was ignored the first time the previous year.
He was even passed up in 2013 despite being named the VFL Rising Star and one vote from winning the JJ Liston Trophy playing for the Northern Blues.
But Richmond finally took notice the following year after Lambert’s outstanding semi-final performance, choosing him with its last live rookie pick.
“That game we were down by five goals at three-quarter time, staring down the barrel so to speak,” Dixon said.
“So for him to kick three last-quarter goals, I don’t think there’s a bigger moment than that.
“He’s a really driven character. That week he was coming off a poor week the week before. He’s very driven to achieve results and he had a really steely resolve about him that day.
“He was the one that got us over the line that day and it probably got him over the line in terms of being picked up (by Richmond).”
And with the Tigers September bound, Lambert will enhance his reputation as a big-game player should he help get them over the line for their first finals win since 2001.

I reckon he knows how to play the game. We have yet to see to what standard he can play. Time will tell but I get the feeling he could be a handy squad player probably a player ranked 23-30 on a list you can trust to do a job at some point.
Thought he could play and showing he can. Clearly has a place in the 22 on game day. Well done to him. He has done it tough but he is making every post a winner. :clapping

Richmond — Kane Lambert
ALMOST one year ago, Lambert produced a scintillating individual performance in Williamstown’s VFL semi-final against Werribee.
His four goals — three came in the fourth term — and 32 disposals won the game for the Seagulls, as well as the hearts of Richmond, which later picked him up in the rookie draft.
This September, Lambert has the opportunity to make the same impact on footy’s grandest stage.
After an injury-interrupted start to the season, Lambert cemented his spot in Richmond’s best 22 towards the latter half of the season. Between Rounds 16 and 23, he booted seven goals and averaged 20 disposals, nine contested possessions, four marks, four clearances and three inside 50s.
With the ability to win his own ball due to his sharp, tough skills around the stoppages, Lambert could have a major influence this month.
He proved last year that he could perform on the big stage, albeit at the level below the AFL.
And Lambert would undoubtedly enhance his reputation as a big-game player should he help get the Tigers get over the line for their first finals win since 2001.

Don't mind saying I got it wrong with this kid, didn't think he had the tools for senior football, wasn't constructive enough and didn't believe . Has flourished , slick disposal , Carrys the pill and has those typical hands like a steel trap in the contest, was a pretty shrewd pick up by the Tigers and could be pivotal in our finals campaign :clapping

RICHMOND’S Kane Lambert has implored young Ovens and Murray footballers to not give up on their AFL dream.
Lambert, who taken by the Tigers in the 2014 rookie draft as a 23-year-old, said it was never too late to come under notice from talent scouts.
Wodonga Raiders’ Sam Murray was selected as a rookie by Sydney after a stellar season in the O and M while the Rouse twins, Zachary and Jordan, have joined Birallee Park after attracting the attention of Swans recruiters.
Lambert was overlooked by AFL clubs as an 18-year-old and a decision to take 12 months off football to train his body to be a senior player paid off for the former Northern Knight.
After four seasons in the VFL with the Northern Bullants and Williamstown, Lambert is now an AFL player with 13 games to his name.
“I think the biggest thing for me was always trying to get the best out of myself, whatever league that was,” he said.
“Playing good footy is a byproduct of enjoying it.
“No matter where you’re playing, you have to enjoy your footy and that was the biggest focus I had in the VFL competition.
“Leave no stone unturned and enjoy your footy.”
Lambert, speaking at Birallee Park during the Tigers’ two-day community camp on the Border, said he was loving life at the top level.
“It’s where I’ve wanted to be for a long time,” he said.
“Obviously you have bigger crowds and expectations but the pace of the game is a lot quicker, you have less time with the footy and you have to make quick decisions.
“You go from a normal working life and just training in the afternoons with footy as an outlet whereas now you get drafted and footy becomes your full-time job.”
Lambert is looking forward to the first pre-season hitout against Fremantle on February 19 ahead of the AFL season opener against Carlton on March 24.
“We want to go out there and compete,” he said.
Lambert, a good friend of North Albury and Howlong export Anthony Miles, said he had enjoyed his time on the Border.
“I think as AFL footballers we are privileged to be in a position to get involved in these community engagement activities,” he said.

I've been a critic before but he was easily our best last night.
Was impressed with the reduced interchange how his power athleticism looked in the last 1/4. When other blokes were getting brushed aside he looked physically imposing. Seems like a great guy and I hope he really cements himself in the best 22.

One of the nurses I know, knows the Lambert family. They have known Kane for a while. He was always a gun footballer but probably did not have the size to be picked up in the draft.
Great to see him make most of his opportunities. A real tough nut which we need so badly because we do have a lot of soft players in the team.

Lambert played really well on Thursday night. I hope he keeps it up. It would be nice to find one from off the rookie list that could become a very good player for us.... We need it.
I just like the way he doesn't seem to get flustered in congestion and he is not afraid to take other players on. They are the things I first look for in new guys. (Menadue also has shown that early on this year too. Really happy with what I have seen)
Lambert also looks to have got himself in great shape.

RICHMOND on-baller Kane Lambert has been taken to hospital suffering breathing difficulties after being injured early in the first quarter against Port Adelaide on Saturday night.
Lambert was hurt in a marking contest as Brad Ebert caught him in the ribs with a knee.
Richmond general manager of football Dan Richardson said at half-time it was too early to confirm the extent of Lambert's injury.
"He was struggling to breathe so not quite sure what the prognosis is but I guess when you're struggling to breathe it doesn’t sound too good, so we’ll have to wait and see," Richardson told radio station 3AW.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said after the game Lambert had suffered a possible punctured lung in the collision, but the club was yet to have the suspected diagnosis confirmed.

RICHMOND has confirmed that onballer Kane Lambert will miss up to six weeks due to a punctured lung and cracked rib he suffered in an incident in the first quarter of the Tigers' 35-point loss to Port Adelaide on Saturday night.
Lambert, 24, was taken to hospital suffering breathing difficulties after being hurt in a marking contest as Brad Ebert caught him in the ribs with a knee.
Tigers football manager Dan Richardson said Lambert would be sidelined for an extended period, compounding Richmond's dismal start to the season.
"He'll miss four to six weeks," Richardson told Triple M on Sunday.
"It's a fairly serious injury, he's a pretty sore boy today, I'm sure … (but) we've just got to stay together and keep moving forward."

While an abundance of list management decisions are facing Richmond in the coming months, Kane Lambert is very likely to be at the club next year.
One of the the Tigers' recent drafting success stories, it's understood Lambert is on track to re-sign with the club.
Lambert, 24, was taken at pick 46 in the 2015 rookie draft, having forged a strong career in the VFL, first with the Northern Blues and then for Williamstown.
The midfielder/forward was elevated off the rookie list early last year, only to seriously injure a shoulder on debut against the Western Bulldogs in round two.
However he enjoyed a strong back half of the season, playing every game from his senior return in round 13 until year's end, including a solid showing in the elimination final loss to North Melbourne.
Lambert began 2016 brilliantly; he collected 28 disposals in the season-opener against Carlton. However after a serviceable opening month to the campaign, his season was interrupted when a collision during the round six match against Port Adelaide led to a cracked rib and punctured lung. Lambert spent time in hospital as a result of the incident.
He has been largely subdued since returning in round nine against Fremantle, but it's believed the Tigers have little doubt Lambert will remain at Punt Road in 2017.
Seemingly stuck in a mid-ladder rut, nearly half of Richmond's list remains uncontracted beyond this season.
While Corey Ellis and Nick Vlastuin penned new deals last month, restricted free agent Ty Vickery, David Astbury, Jake Batchelor, Troy Chaplin, Ivan Maric, Shaun Hampson and Ben Griffiths are all yet to re-sign with the Tigers.
Youngster Reece McKenzie announced his retirement on Thursday after battling mental health issues.
The Tigers, who were beaten by Collingwood in the race to lure Greater Western Sydney star Adam Treloar last year, have been linked to Gold Coast's Dion Prestia and Giant Jack Steele. Both players' deals expire at season's end.

NO-FRILLS Tiger Kane Lambert says it was a "privilege" to get the call to curb Brownlow medallist Sam Mitchell in what became a match-turning stopping role.
The ex-VFL standout, who had to wait until he was 23 for his AFL shot, kept the four-time premiership Hawk and West Coast recruit to 13 disposals after quarter-time.
Mitchell was the chief reason the Eagles led by four points at the first break, compiling a game-high 12 possessions, but managed only seven across the next two terms.
Coach Damien Hardwick acknowledged Lambert's defensive effort after Richmond's 11.10 (76) to 8.17 (65) success.
"It's good the coach has that confidence in me to be able to go to a player and lock him down," Lambert told AFL.com.au.
"Whether that's through the midfield or in that half-back type role on players who are hurting us. If I can lock him down and play a role for the team, I'm more than happy to do that.
"(Mitchell)'s a privilege to play on, really. I learned a lot on him – just in those three quarters – so I'll take plenty out of that game."
Lambert, who had 19 touches against West Coast, was the No.46 selection in the 2015 rookie draft and was elevated onto the senior list ahead of last season.
The 25-year-old is now part of a Tigers team celebrating three victories to begin the season.
"We came here to get the four points and we're rapt to do that, but we'll quickly move onto Brisbane next week," Lambert said.
"There's plenty of energy around the place and it's feeling refreshed and the boys want to come into work on Monday to get going.
"So it's a great place to be and we're looking forward to Brisbane next week."

Richmond utility Kane Lambert has taken his game to another level throughout the first half of season 2017.
Lambert, a mature-age, rookie-list recruit for the Tigers at the end of 2014, is quietly, but extremely efficiently, going about business in his third season of AFL football.
After averaging 15.6 disposals per match in 13 games in his 2015 debut season, and 14.7 disposals in 15 games last year, he has an average of 18.8 disposals in 10 games so far in 2017.
He has excelled as a run-with player, using his pace, running ability, discipline and determination to nullify the effectiveness of key opponents on a consistent basis.
“What I’ve liked about him is his ability to be able to go on to a player, shut them down, but still be able to get the ball himself,” Richmond great Matthew Richardson said on this week’s edition of the Club’s official podcast ‘Talking Tigers’.
“It’s not just a run-with role where he’s not getting the footy . . . he’s still getting his 18-20-odd touches a game.
“So he’s very disciplined, but still has the nous to be able to read the play and get off his man.
“And his versatility is a real asset.
“I think versatility is just about the most important thing you can have as a player, and ‘Dimma’ (coach Damien Hardwick) can use him in a number of different roles.
“He can go into the middle to give you another midfield rotation. And, when he’s playing forward half, he kicks goals.”

Will aways have his limitations in terms of his skill level but his explosiveness out of congested situations and his will to move the ball forward at any cost is a huge asset at the moment. RICHMOND midfielder Kane Lambert is one of those rookie-list success stories that shows talent, and not age, should be the determining factor in establishing an AFL career.
While he doesn't grab the headlines of Dustin Martin, Alex Rance or Jack Riewoldt, Lambert's contribution to the Tigers is an under-rated part of why they suddenly find themselves in the top four.
In just his 41st game, the 25-year-old had a career-high 33 possessions (including 12 contested) for the Tigers in their rousing 13-point victory over Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.
Lambert also laid a team-high 10 tackles and was level with ruckman Toby Nankervis for leading the side for clearances with six.
"It felt like a high-running game, they're very good in the contest so we had to try and match them there and then try to exploit them on the outside," Lambert told AFL.com.au.
Lambert arrived at the Tigers as the 46th overall pick in the 2014 rookie draft after pressing his claims in the VFL with the Northern Bullants and Williamstown.
After 28 games in his first two seasons, he's established himself in the side this year, missing only the round one win against Carlton.
The Tigers had winners across the park, especially in the second half when they booted eight goals to three.
All-Australian defender Rance shook off the attention of Jackson Trengove, who was shadowing him all night as a defensive forward, to have an impact.
"It's credit to Rancey, as a fullback getting tagged, but his second half was fantastic," Lambert said.
"He's a superstar of the game and sides are going to do that to him.
"But I thought he was well assisted by David Astbury and Dylan Grimes back there as well."
Lambert also had praise for the performance of Martin, who picked up a team-high 36 disposals and booted a key goal in the third quarter.
"He's an unbelievable player and it's a real credit even to play with him," Lambert said.
"Just to be able to see him live and the things he does, but the best thing about Dusty is he's a real team man as well.
"He's a great teammate in that sense, so we're really excited what he's done and what he's going to do."

Lambert was a pivotal player inside 50 in the second qtr against the Giants.
That roved goal coming across the front of the pack when it bounced of Rioli's chest was a beauty. KB would have been proud of it.
He set up the kick inside 50 which lead to Riewoldt's mark in the goal square as well.
Numerous other times he was there and about when the ball was inside 50.

KANE Lambert was at home alone, preparing for another work day as manager of a gym when his phone rang.
He missed the call, but noticed it was a strange number that had pinged through to voicemail.
Lambert was intrigued, so he punched in “101” to retrieve the message and was surprised to hear the voice of Richmond list manager Blair Hartley. Until then, they had never spoken.
“I called him back and he said, ‘We’re going to take you with one of our first three picks in the rookie draft, we’ll give you a call afterwards’,” Lambert recalled last week.
It was 10 minutes before the 2014 rookie draft and the first time he had heard from anyone at Richmond.
Within hours he was on a plane to Townsville to join the Tigers on a pre-season training camp, his dream of playing AFL suddenly alive.
Lambert had endured years of frustration, crushed hopes and heartbreak.
Overlooked as a teenager in the 2009 national draft, his big break did not come until a 2014 VFL preliminary final for Williamstown, when he had 32 disposals, 17 clearances, 15 inside-50s and kicked four goals in a performance Champion Data rated as worth 169 SuperCoach points.
Williamstown coach Andrew Collins labelled it “arguably the best individual state league game I’ve ever seen in the prelim”.
“We were fielding interest for other players all year yet I knew what a special talent I had with Kane,” Collins said.
“We had to manage him through the year with rehabilitation from an injury (hip surgery) but I finally took off the leash in the finals.”
Until then, two-time North Melbourne premiership coach Denis Pagan thought he had lost the plot.
Pagan coached Lambert at TAC Cup club Northern Knights in 2009 and could not understand why his best-and-fairest winner was on the nose with AFL recruiters.
“Josh Caddy and Dylan Grimes also played in that team ... but nobody wanted to know about Kane Lambert. It was bizarre,” Pagan said.
“I spoke to North Melbourne recruiting people. I sent videos that said he’s a right-footed Anthony Stevens and he’s going to get better. I spoke to St Kilda where a dear friend of mine is and I even spoke to someone at Carlton.
“You’ve got no idea how many times I rang and how many videos I sent to recruiters. You don’t often believe so strongly in somebody, but I did.
“You start to think, ‘Maybe I’m a poor judge’. I was starting to doubt myself when he wasn’t getting a look in.”
After being overlooked, Lambert was crushed and fell out of love with the game. He took a break to decide whether he wanted to play footy again.
Lambert trained away from the track and added 10kg to his frame in the gym, but when he started stacking paint cans in a Preston factory for a living he realised he still wanted to become an AFL footballer.
“I did a lot of soul-searching there. It wasn’t tough work but it was mentally tough,” Lambert said.
“The biggest thing I missed was being part of a club.”
Lambert joined the Northern Bullants — now the Northern Blues — in 2011 and two years later won the club best-and-fairest, was picked in the VFL’s team of the year, finished runner up in the JJ Liston Trophy and won the Fothergill-Round Medal as the VFL’s Rising Star.
“We were hopeful that Carlton would look at him,” Blues general manager Garry O’Sullivan said.
“It would have been great for Kane, great for our club, great for the alignment.
“All the dots were just there to be lined up but in their wisdom they didn’t and that didn’t go down too well with Kane, and then over he went to Williamstown.”
Shoulder and back injuries hampered Lambert’s first year at Richmond in 2015, but this year has played 20 of a possible 21 matches and last Wednesday he signed a two-year contract extension.
He is on track to play his 50th game in Richmond’s first final in a fortnight. But that is far from the front of his mind.
“I’m not here to reach personal milestones, I’m just here to play my role and do everything I can for my teammates,” Lambert said.
Lambert’s junior coach since Auskick George Wakim says the Richmond lifeline was reward for hard work and persistence, two qualities Lambert has never lacked.
“Kane would never miss a training session, never miss a game,” Wakim said.
“He wanted to work, he’d go and do that extra running after training even as a 15-year-old when most kids can’t wait to go home and get on the PlayStation.
“He’s not (Patrick) Dangerfield. He’s not silk and he’s not tall. But I think his X-factor is he never gives up and the fact he got knocked back so many times but eventually got drafted is a real reflection of that.”
Pagan — now working in real estate — still talks to some of those same recruiters who continually ignored his pleas to draft the Richmond onballer.
Not that the 344-game coach brings up Lambert’s name in discussion.
As he says: “I don’t need to talk about it. I was right.”

Yeah. He has those roving skills that seem to be largely forgotten these days. In the second Qtr on Friday night he went straight through a pack on the wing, grabbed the footy and was out the other side before anyone knew what had happened. /everybody else near the footy was either flat footed or going the other way.
The best thing was that it looked like it was going to be a Geelong ball until he went through. Just a shame his kick forward wasn't that great.

It was early in Richmond’s pre-season campaign when Kane Lambert noticed the thing that would eventually take the club to its drought-breaking premiership.
Now in his third year with the Tigers, Lambert and the rest of the playing group were taking part in a simple competitive drill at the Punt Road Oval when their trademark was born purely out of the fun they were having while implementing the game style.
“It was based off the back of pressure and from that point we loved defending and winning the ball back off the opposition,” Lambert told AFLPlayers.com.au.
“It was around tackling, smothers, pressure and those little things. I think that was a turning point for us as a group and that grew as the year went on.
“The boys loved defending and we reflected and spoke about how much we enjoyed it and managed to replicated it week-in, week-out.”
Lambert went into the season not knowing where he stood within Richmond’s on-field plans. The 25-year-old was in and out of the side throughout his first two years on the list and was unable to consolidate his place.
He began the year as a negating midfielder who was keen to take on various run-with roles, but would finish the 2017 campaign flourishing and showing off his offensive attributes.
The arrival of Blake Caracella as an assistant coach at Tigerland was one of the main factors behind Lambert’s rise in form, which eventually led to the mature-aged recruit placing third in the club’s best and fairest award at year’s end.
“I knew I had more to offer and Blake Caracella made me believe in myself more than anyone else,” Lambert added.
“He sees things that no one else really does but when he explains it to you you’re confused as to why you’d never noticed it before.
“He’s very simplistic in how he goes about it but he’s so smart. He has helped me with my off-ball running and positioning and, again, the belief. He didn’t expect me to do anything that he didn’t think I was capable of. He helped me to believe in myself.”
Confidence is arguably the defining factor in any sport but the change in self-belief for the Tigers was as dramatic as it comes.
Lambert’s belief in his own game improved every week, similarly his teammates, and he said it came down to the care for each other.
“I think it’s the love and connection in the club and the fact we genuinely played for each other. The relationships we have with coaches and admin staff — just the whole Richmond Football Club — it’s like a family,” Lambert said.

Lambert’s season was easily his best on a personal front as well. He averaged more than 21 disposals per game and finished second at the Tigers for tackles and goal assists and was duly rewarded on best and fairest night.
And his performances weren’t only limited to the home and away season. Lambert averaged 23 touches, seven inside 50s and a goal throughout the finals series, culminating in a premiership medallion.
It’s caps off a remarkable journey where Lambert grew from a draft reject, who took a year off after his TAC Cup year, to VFL star, AFL rookie and now a flag winner.
Lambert is fully appreciative of the opportunities he’s been presented in football but is more grateful of the process.
“It’s funny, we get to the destination of winning a premiership but I think the sweetest part and the thing that makes it worthwhile was the journey we went on together. I’m looking forward to getting back to training with the boys and trying to have a crack at it all over again. I’m excited about what’s ahead, rather than what we’ve done.
“I never imagined myself being a premiership player. I’m looking forward to sitting down and watching the game again. I’m very fortunate, I don’t know what I have done right along the way to be rewarded as a premiership player. There’s not many better things.”

Ok maybe Dusty mentioned him one time in a series of pointed questions when asked specifically but when most blokes have been interviewed there's been no mention of Chocco in terms of their response in regards to influences in their rise to glory.
But If you listen to Chocco and the way he's going on he's telling us the players improved solely because of his genius development techniques.
I'd ask if that's so
1) why did the club get rid of him?
2) why aren't the improved players mentioning him when asked about their improvement?

DUAL North Melbourne premiership coach Denis Pagan has spoken of his exasperation at watching Richmond premiership midfielder Kane Lambert repeatedly ignored by AFL clubs.
Pagan, who also coached Carlton, elected to end his 25-year coaching career in 2009 with a year at the helm of TAC Cup side Northern Knights, where he met then-17-year-old Lambert.
Sam Grimley and Dylan Grimes – a Tiger teammate of Lambert's – went on to be drafted at the end of that season, while another Richmond star, Josh Caddy, joined the big league a year later.
But Lambert, 25, had to wait until the 46th pick in the 2014 rookie draft, after winning the Fothergill-Round Medal a season earlier as the VFL's most promising young player.
The former Northern Blues and Williamstown onballer's first two years at AFL level were solid rather than outstanding, but he became one of the Tigers' most valuable players this year.
Lambert averaged 21.5 disposals (7.9 contested), 6.7 score involvements, 4.6 tackles and 4.1 inside 50s in finishing third in Richmond's 2017 best and fairest behind Dustin Martin and Alex Rance.
"I'm just so glad it's all worked out for Kane now. He's a quality kid and he's so popular at Richmond," Pagan told SEN.
"I just think to finish third in the best and fairest, in front of Trent Cotchin – they must rate him highly.
"I was probably lucky, because I was with him every day for 12 months virtually at training and on match days and just saw him in a whole host of scenarios."
Pagan went to the lengths, without success, of contacting clubs himself to urge them to take a punt on Lambert, who sat out of football in 2010 partly in frustration at being overlooked.
"He just won me from day one," Pagan said of Lambert.
"I thought he was a right-footed Anthony Stevens and I couldn't understand why he wasn’t given an opportunity.
"I think he went through six drafts (before) he got his chance and I was so pleased that he had a great year, and finished third in the best and fairest in a premiership for the Tigers.
"It was great to talk to him just the other day and reflect where he came from."
Lambert's breakout campaign earned him a new two-year contract to remain at Punt Rd until the end of 2019 season.

Lambert, who had stints at the Northern Bullants/Blues and Williamstown in the VFL before being drafted, was only keeping tabs on the 2015 rookie draft on the AFL website to see if any of his Williamstown teammates were going to get picked up.
So low were his own expectations of getting selected that he let a phone call from an unknown number just prior to the rookie draft go through to his voicemail. It turned out to be Richmond list manager Blair Hartley.
Initially, he thought he was the victim of a cruel practical joke but, as it turned out, after 1096 picks and at the ripe old age of 23, Lambert became an AFL player. Three years later he would have a dream season to play an integral part in the Tigers’ drought-breaking flag.
“It was a shock because that year I’d had no contact with any AFL club, we had no interest,” Lambert told Fairfax Media.
“It was mainly shock and probably a lit bit of fear as well because I probably hadn’t prepared my life. I was a 23-year-old working full-time and I was pretty steady in what I was doing and all of a sudden I’ve got to quit my job and start a new journey.
“It was a lot of emotions, it took me a little time to settle in, but looking back now I was elated deep down.
“It’s been a different journey, a long one, a tough one, but it’s ingrained some strong values into me and built resilience and humility and authenticity as well.”
While Lambert never lost hope that he would one day play in the AFL, he felt that he was ignored so many times by recruiters because he didn’t fit the athletic profile they were looking for.
“They probably found I was a bit plain, you could find players like me wherever they liked,” said Lambert, who is listed as 178 centimetres and 77 kilograms.
“You’d have to have some real special attribute as my size to get an opportunity and I don’t think they thought I had an X-factor and I got told by a recruiter that I was just going to be a role player, I’m not going to be a match winner.
“Looking back now that’s all the Richmond Football Club wanted – a role player. I think times have changed a little bit but I always felt if I knocked on the door long enough it would open and if it didn’t open I’d have to knock it down so eventually that’s what happened.”
As effective role player as Lambert was last year, he also proved the aforementioned recruiter wrong in emphatic fashion by ending up one of Richmond’s match-winners on grand final day as he produced one of the best performances of his career when it mattered most.
“To perform on the big stage, it sits well,” he said. “It’s exciting and it gives me confidence that I can play at the highest level on the biggest day, so moving forward hopefully I reap the benefits of that.”
Lambert ranked second for tackles, fourth for inside 50s, fifth for disposals, fifth for contested possessions and sixth for clearances at Richmond last year.
Those impressive numbers took him ahead of the likes of Cotchin, Shaun Grigg, Riewoldt, Bachar Houli, Dion Prestia, Daniel Rioli, Shane Edwards and Toby Nankervis in the club’s best-and-fairest, but being put on such a grand pedestal doesn’t sit comfortably with the humble 26-year-old.
“It probably doesn’t sit too well really because how I perceive myself and the journey I’ve come from,” he said.
“I’ve probably battled within myself a little bit to feel as though I’m worthy at AFL level and that’s a continual battle for me and a hurdle I need to get over.”
However, Lambert knows how easily his premiership fairytale could have remained confined to his dreams.
With his career at the crossroads at the end of the 2016 season, he credited new assistant coach Blake Caracella with providing him with the necessary self-belief to help him reach the dizzying heights of last year.
“[I was wondering] where do I fit in, and am I going to be able to have an impact and when Blake came in, he came in with a completely fresh mind and no prior opinions,” Lambert said.
“It was his belief in me that probably gave me some belief in myself as well that if this guy mentors me through I could have an impact ... he articulates the game so well and I learn really well off him, he reads game well and just the way he taught me off-ball tactics.
“At the end of the 2016 season I quite easily could’ve been delisted and who knows what would’ve happened so I’m fortunate to end up as a premiership player and I’m excited by what’s ahead too.”
Lambert and his teammates can now look forward to the unfurling of the premiership flag in round one against old foes Carlton in front of an expected crowd of 90,000.
“It’ll be a good moment for our fans and obviously our friends and family.”

It's not easy to find a Tiger who has been consistently underwhelming this year, especially when looking at them directly after a 93-point win. If you had to pick one, Kane Lambert would be disappointed with his start to the season after being the Tigers' most improved in 2017. His form running into the finals was red-hot, which didn't translate immediately to the opening few rounds. While he was much better in the hefty win over Brisbane with two goals and some hard two-way running, Lambert's overall stats this season are down on last year's – he's failed to take a single mark inside 50 (after 17 across the 2017 season) and has been involved in just two goal assists (after being second overall at the Tigers last year with 23). His tackling average is also down from over 4.5 a game to under three, and while he had his best game on Saturday with five one-percenters (from one a game in the opening three rounds), his first few weeks weren't remarkable.

KANE Lambert finished on the podium at Richmond’s best and fairest in the club’s premiership season of 2017.
But the tenacious Tiger remains an unsung hero, with the likes of Dustin Martin, Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin ordinarily earning the plaudits.
While all four of those recognised Tigers had their moments against Melbourne on Tuesday night, it was Lambert who shone brightest.
The rookie draftee racked up 29 touches, eight tackles, five inside 50s and two goals in a best of ground performance that typified Richmond’s depth and resilience.
Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton lauded Lambert’s match, calling the 26-year-old’s performance the “complete game”.
“For the outside-type players, generally they’re not hard tacklers,” Brereton said on Fox Footy.
“That’s the basic rule of thumb. This bloke tackles like there’s no tomorrow.
“The pressure with his running between the two arcs, the pressure on the opposition when they had the ball ... what they want from him, he gave them a complete game.”
Triple-premiership player Jonathan Brown was just as impressed with Lambert’s four-quarter performance.
Indeed, Brown not only noted that Lambert was capable of playing in a number of positions, but that he was the exact player Melbourne was crying out for.
“He’s got a nice mix,” Brown said.
“He can play inside as well. He can go into the centre bounce. He’s the style of player that Melbourne don’t have a lot of.”
While Melbourne got to within two kicks of Richmond in the third term, the Tigers surged in the final quarter to win by 46 points.
Second-gamer Jack Higgins kicked three goals, while Lambert and five other teammates booted two majors.
Lambert said the spread of goal kickers and possession winners reflected the club’s team-first mentality.
“We take more satisfaction out of each other’s goals,” Lambert said.
“There’s a lot of things you don’t see or things that don’t get stats, but internally we celebrate them.
“It’s not always about getting the footy. It’s about setting up your teammates.”

Kane Lambert’s pathway into the AFL system wasn’t a conventional one.
Recruited from VFL side Williamstown at the age of 23, Lambert was a late bloomer after being overlooked in the 2010 national draft.
It’s been a meteoric rise for the now 26-year-old after playing a star role in Richmond’s drought breaking premiership last season, finishing third in the clubs best and fairest award along the way.
But it wasn’t an easy ride.
“I worked in a gym, largely for the fact it suited my lifestyle to be able to play footy at the highest standard that I could,” Lambert told SEN’s Time On.
“Basically when I was playing at Williamstown my day would start at 4:30 and I would be up opening the gym at 5.
“I would get home for half an hour before rushing off to training, come back and be home between 10:00 and 10:30.
“It was tough. I was pretty knackered by that stage.
“There the sacrifices you have got to make to get to somewhere you want to be.”
The forward was hell-bent on getting the absolute best out of himself, whether that was at VFL or AFL level.
When it was announced Lambert would be heading to Punt Road it all came as a shock as there was no contact from the Tigers prior to him being drafted.
“Getting drafted to me wasn’t the be all and end all, it was about being the best player that I could be," he said.
"If that was at VFL level where I gave myself every opportunity then I would have been satisfied with that.
"There was always a desire to get to the next level, particularly playing with and against AFL listed players.
"I always felt like my form at VFL level would warrant AFL selection and that gave me confidence to keep perusing a career in football.
"I was fortunate enough that I had good bosses along the way who understood where my drive was and I was very fortunate that my name was read out even though I wasn’t expecting it one bit.
"There was no inclination that Richmond were interested in me, not that year and the six years prior. It was quite a surprise."
The reigning premiers take on North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

I remember sitting in a cafe the start of the season we drafted him when 2 coaches from Willy came in and sat down next to my table. Andy Collins was one and they started talking about their players etc. Luke Williams entered and sat with them to what was a scheduled meeting. Interesting discussions were had but i can say they mainly focused on Lambert. When i left i firmly believed we would take Lambert should we have the opportunity and i thank Williams for bringing him to Tigerland!!

The unheralded Tiger has cracked the top 100 of the Player Ratings for the first time in his career, having moved into No.93 at the end of round seven.
After finishing third in the Tigers' best and fairest last year as they romped to the premiership, Lambert seems to have taken his game to another level. He put in a career-best performance on Anzac Day Eve, then topped that mark against Fremantle last week.
The former rookie is ranked No.12 in the competition over the past month.

Lambert’s averaging 21.9 disposals, 3.6 marks and 3.4 inside-50s per match and is now no longer flying under the radar in the eyes of the football world.
“He’s a fantastic player,” Hardwick said.
“He’s had success at VFL level and it’s transitioned to AFL over the last couple of years, and he’s just got enormous belief in himself . . . As coaching staff, we do, too.
“His ability to work from contest to contest is second to none.
“He’s incredible to watch. We’re fortunate, we get to watch him behind the goals and we see what he does and how he works.

Before quarter-time, the underrated runner showed breathtaking courage to mark while running with the flight of the ball, crashing into oncoming Saints youngster Bailey Rice in the process.

KANE Lambert stepped out of Richmond’s yellow and black stretch limousine with his sunglasses on and an empty Corona bottle in hand.
It was 4pm and Lambert had been chauffeured from Punt Rd to the Yarra Valley for best mate and former Tiger Adam Marcon’s wedding.
About 24 hours earlier, Lambert had kicked Richmond 28 points clear of Adelaide in the third quarter of the 2017 Grand Final.
You could only imagine the frivolities that would have taken place that night.
Lambert’s next task was to deliver a wedding speech, and his dusty appearance — after limo riding in a Tigers’ polo and without socks — might have had onlookers concerned.
“I don’t think he’d slept too much,” Marcon said. “He sobered up a little by the time he had to make his speech.
“But I had Kane’s suit for him at the venue and he scrubbed up well.”
If you think this was a scene out of the movie The Hangover, think again.
Lambert arrived in style — alongside Jason Castagna, Dan Butler and housemate Jayden Short — and, much like his belated AFL arrival, he was ready to go.
“He was taking notes for his speech months out,” Marcon said. “He was asking us questions and wanted to cover all bases. When he got to that moment he wanted to be prepared and not anxious. He’s an absolute professional.”
By the time Lambert grabbed the microphone, no notes were required.
“He just recited it, because he’d prepared so well,” Marcon said.
“He did a fantastic job, and that sums him up pretty well.”
The ensuing beers were well deserved, because the premiership player’s career had not followed the script.
On Lambert’s 18th birthday he got his driver’s licence in the morning and was overlooked in the first of six national drafts in the evening.
In total, Lambert watched AFL clubs take 836 players before Richmond finally took him.
Lambert has long been a workaholic. He had to be.
“I’m not the most talented player out there, but I want to be the hardest working,” he said.
“That’s basically how my game works. My strength is my work-rate, plain and simple.
“I (look at) GPS numbers and how many contests I can get to. That’s my main focus.”
This season, Lambert has topped Richmond’s GPS in 14 out of 17 games. In nine of those matches — 10 including the Grand Final — he also out-ran all 22 opponents.
In five games this year, Lambert has clocked more than 16km.
His dedication to nailing his heartfelt wedding speech would not have surprised his coach, Damien Hardwick.
“It’s no coincidence he works incredibly hard,” Hardwick said. “He’s one of our best trainers.”
In fact, after a quiet half in Round 1, Hardwick said this: “He was working too hard. He was trying to get involved too much — he’s such an important player for us.”
But Lambert, 26, has talent. You don’t place third in Richmond’s best-and-fairest in a premiership season, ahead of captain Trent Cotchin, without ability.
That puts Lambert in fine company.
Luke Hodge and Jarryd Roughead rounded out Hawthorn’s podium in premiership seasons, while Brownlow medallists Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn) and Jimmy Bartel (Geelong) have each done it twice.
This year, Lambert sits 13th in the AFL coaches’ award. Again, he is ahead of Cotchin.
The knock on Lambert was always his size.
“I was probably one of those people where you look at his size and you automatically think, ‘I’m not sure if he fits in an AFL mould’,” Hardwick said.
“But he’s got incredible key strengths, and every level he’s played at he’s excelled.”
Lambert couldn’t do much about his 178cm height. But after he was overlooked on his 18th birthday, despite winning Northern Knights’ best-and-fairest, he quit football to bulk up.
“I sent tapes to two clubs and have said since day one he’s a right-footed Anthony Stevens,” former Knights coach Denis Pagan said.
“Josh Caddy and Dylan Grimes played in that team, but nobody wanted to know about Kane Lambert. I was flabbergasted.”
So, in 2010, Lambert packed 10kg onto his frame and paid the bills by stacking 20L tins of paint at a Preston factory run by Marcon’s father, Adrian.
In 2011, Lambert and Marcon joined VFL club Northern Blues, where several coaches promised to push the pair to Carlton.
“Lambert has been knocking over the best opposition player each week. I’ve definitely made Carlton aware,” 2011 coach Darren Harris said.
That year another 160 players were drafted, none of them Lambert.
In 2012 Robert Hyde took the coaching reins.
“I’m going to promote them for a rookie spot at Carlton,” Hyde said.
“That’s the pathway, and the game’s becoming a bit shorter up top — it’s not your giants any more.”
That year another 130 players were drafted, none of them Lambert.
In 2013, Lambert won the VFL Rising Star, the Northern Blues’ best-and-fairest and was one vote off the J.J. Liston Trophy.
Another 117 players were drafted, including Northern Blue Jacob Ballard (Fremantle), but none of them Lambert.
Ironically, Ballard now stars for Richmond’s VFL team.
The Blues drafted 12 rookies from 2011-13. Ciaran Byrne and Tom Bell (now at Brisbane) are the only survivors.
Lambert and Marcon were fed up with empty promises, and so in 2014 they crossed to Williamstown.
Early on, Lambert recovered from hip surgy. In September, he delivered.
How is this for a semi-final stats sheet? Lambert recorded 32 disposals, 17 clearances, 15 inside 50s and kicked four goals — three in the final quarter as Williamstown fought back from 32 points down at the final change.
It was the match that made his career.
“Kane had a really strong VFL finals series,” Tigers recruiter Francis Jackson said. “When the standard steps up, he was able to play his best footy.
“We’re delighted someone who’s been knocked back a couple of times dusts themselves off and perseveres.”
Lambert was preparing for work at a gym before the 2014 rookie draft, when he received a voicemail from Tigers list boss Blair Hartley.
“I’d had no contact from any club, let alone Richmond,” Lambert said.
“I actually thought a couple of my (Williamstown) mates were going to get picked up — Adam Marcon and Michael Gibbons.”
When Marcon learned the news he dashed to Lambert’s house via Rebel Sport, sporting a new Richmond jumper.
“It was like a dream come true for both of us,” said Marcon, who was rookie-listed by Richmond in 2015.
Within hours Lambert was grouped with Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin and Ty Vickery in an “Amazing Race-type” dash to the airport for a flight to Townsville.
Just as quickly, Lambert forced a change to Richmond’s recruiting policy.
“You know when you go to the Gold Coast (theme parks), and you have a thing, ‘You’ve got to be this high?’,” Hardwick said.
“I used to have that in (Jackson’s) office. I’ve now brought it down after Kane came in, so anyone above 120cm gets in for our club.”

“I think there’s a lot of growth in my game,” Lambert told SEN’s ‘Crunch Time’ program.
“When you’re told you’re not good enough for so long, somewhere deep inside you probably start to believe it.
“But to be able to put performance and continuity in my footy, the belief started to grow . . . You feel comfortable and like you belong . . .
“I think the wheel started to turn midway through last year . . . (assistant coaches) Blake Caracella and Andrew McQualter have been huge for me in that regard.
“They’re allowing me to play to my strengths, which is great for my confidence as well.”
Another feature of Lambert’s game this season has been his increased potency up forward. He’s kicked 15 goals so far, compared to 13 for the entire 2017 season.
“I did want to become a little bit more damaging centre forward, particularly. I thought last year I probably wasn’t as clean as I would have liked,” he said.
“Getting on the scoreboard, and being involved in scoring chains, was a bit of focus for me.
“My best footy at VFL level I was able to kick goals and my next step I felt, at AFL level, was to be a bit more damaging in the front half.”
The gun midfielder had 31 disposals, eight inside-50s, eight intercepts, eight score involvements, six marks, seven tackles and 453 metres gained in the Tigers’ three-point win.
After finishing third in the Jack Dyer Medal in Richmond’s 2017 premiership year, Lambert has elevated his game to an even higher level this season.
He is averaging 22.4 disposals per match and is ranked 10th in the competition for score involvements.

In any metric used, Kane's game was A grade. Anyone suggesting he cant play well without Prestia after that game has backed the wrong horse and has come stone motherless last.

With such a great side and how good they have been, I hate to be critical of anyone of them, but you asked.
My thoughts on Bellis is he is soft as poo. Scared and timid. And the worst kind of scared- scared to make a mistake. He plays like he has himself in his own SuperCoach team.
Embarrassing is a word that comes to mind.
He got what he deserved when he was dropped for a final.
Most people on this site and most Tigers supporters I know think he is all of the above, you are basically the only person I know that likes him as a footballer. And i have a sneaky suspicion you are only taking the pee.

He's a premiership player, runner up in a B&F, AA squad of 40 etc. The guy can play.

For years I have had a problem with Houli for a lot of the reasons I don’t rate Bellis.
Houli played a great GF but it certainly doesn’t make me forget most of his career before that.
I don’t think I would be as harsh on Bellis or Houli if they weren’t backman, but if you are a backman you had better be desperate and make your opponent earn their kicks. Take a look at the way Grimes, Rance and Vlastuin play, none of them are super skillfull but they are serious backman.
Anyway like I said before, it’s harsh to be critical of anything Richmond at the moment so I’ll leave it there.
Good on you for supporting Bellis though, realistically it doesn’t mean poo what you or I think of any of them- as long as we are winning.

Sometimes Prestia gives the impression he is too relaxed, maybe needs a double hit of caffeine before the game, appears very laid back which at times results in some horrible shank kicks. His disposal should be so much better than it is, hopefully he does improve.

Tigers star suffers sickening face plant as Gold Coast Suns battered

Tigers star Kane Lambert caused concern around the ground after he jumped for a handball and landed face first into the surface during Richmonds comfortable win over the Suns.
Lambert was jumping for a ball in the 4th quarter while the Tigers were up 130-51 when the Suns’ Pearce Hanley collected him around his waist.
The Tigers star flipped over and landed heavily on his face and seemed dazed after the fall.
“Risky handball, oh that was an awkward fall,” the commentator said.
“That could have been nasty.”
The medical staff checked Lambert for a neck and shoulder injury but he appeared ok.
Despite the fall, it was an exceptional game from the Tiger who kicked three goals in Richmond’s 92-point win.

So I guess in the eyes of the AFL what Hanley did was totally legal, no free paid by the umps. Hmm, guarantee that if one of our players does the same thing next week it will be the quickest whistle blow in history and across the media and scrutinized heavily by the MRO.

I hope Harbrow is sighted for his blatant and deliberate trip of Prestia. Should get a week for that but the AFL would probably rather pocket a commission so he'll probably get a $1,500 fine...

I think there's enough in it. When a bloke is totally airborn and you're not, you have every opportunity not to make contact, or at least not put a guy in danger like he did. Happens very frequently were a player jumps up to grab a handball, most opponents wait until the bloke lands before wrapping them up. Hanley made a clear decision not to concern himself we Lambert's welfare. Result being our boy is lucky to avoid life changing damage.
Needs a week IMO.

Contact between Gold Coast SUNS’ Pearce Hanley and Richmond’s Kane Lambert from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Richmond’s Daniel Rioli handballs the ball to Lambert. Lambert leaves the ground to take possession of the ball and is met by Hanley who makes body contact. It was the view of the MRO that Hanley’s actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.

Lambert is a ripper. Commentator Jason Dunstall said yesterday Lambert was underrated. But he’s not. He was runner-up in the B&F last year and third in the B&F in the premiership year.

Richmond midfielder Kane Lambert says it’s "a very exciting time" for the club, as both the AFL and VFL sides gear up for huge finals outings this weekend.
Speaking to SEN on Monday afternoon, Lambert said the complementary nature between the two programs reaps benefits.
"It’s very, very important and I think the success of the VFL program over the last three or four years has been a huge factor for us, being able to have our whole list training this time of year," he said.
"(All our) players are capable, they’re all pushing their case."
The current depth within Richmond’s list makes for healthy competition for spots, but Lambert said the Tigers’ primary focus is "trying to make each other better."
"If it means someone’s going to take your spot by helping them get better, well that’s the sacrifice we make," he said.
"The overriding thing is to play your role whether you’re playing VFL or AFL.
"We’re very grateful to be a part of this football club. That’s all we’re asked, to be Richmond Men and Richmond Women.
"They’re the standards we live by."
As the Tigers prepare for Friday night’s preliminary final clash against Geelong, Lambert said Richmond will bring its trademark brand of football.
"Week to week it doesn’t really change too much," he said.
"We still want to control the game and play a Richmond-like style of footy.
"That means a lot of pressure on the opposition and win the ball back as quickly as we can."

Was very very poor in the first half but much improved in the second. Need him to fire from the get go next week as he is somewhat of a barometer for us.

Lambert was forced from the field for treatment and Richmond's medical staff ruled him out for the rest of Sunday's Marsh Community Series game with a concussion.
Cameron's knee made contact with Lambert's head as the pair chased a loose ball near the boundary in the second term.
Whether Cameron's actions will be judged as intentional or careless by the MRO will likely be the deciding factor as to whether the Giants forward will receive any sort of sanction.

Cotchin said Kane Lambert was set to take on Carlton on Thursday week despite being concussed in a heavy collision with Jeremy Cameron.
“He was in pretty good spirits after the game, just had a lump on his face,” he said.
“He said he remembered everything that happened pre- and post the game so I don't think there are any worries there.”

At age 23, Kane Lambert probably couldn't have imagined an AFL career that would include two flags, consecutive top-three finishes in Richmond's best and fairest and the celebration of a 100-game milestone at the MCG to boot. But when he snapped around the corner to kick his first of the afternoon on Sunday, then produced almost a carbon copy for his second later in the match, before putting the icing on the cake with a third in the dying stages – immediately mobbed by his delighted teammates each time – it was the perfect way to cap the occasion. Lambert enjoyed another stunning performance to celebrate a typically understated career, winning 27 disposals, five clearances and kicking three goals against Melbourne. On this occasion, as they so often do not with Lambert, the stats genuinely reflected his importance within this successful Tigers side. Not bad for a player who spent his first six seasons outside of the junior system jumping between VFL teams.

Nice what Lambert! In many ways he is the barometer of our club. We need his hard link up running for our structure to work. I was disappointed with his output prior to this match like many others on this forum but am stoked he found his mojo today!

Has been shouldering a big burden with much of the usual midfield out. Looked absolutely physically shot last night and basically played as a permanent forward. Hopefully he can recover with this longer break.

It was one of Lambert’s quietest outings of the season. He finished the night with just one kick and nine possessions total which is well below his best. His intent was there evidenced by five tackles but his work in attack was not as prolific as it usually is with just one inside 50 and one score involvement. Lambert is so often a barometer for how the Tigers play and was slightly off his game, but as he did earlier in the season after a quiet performance, expect him to bounce back swiftly this week.

There was that second half against Carlton in 2016 and a quarter the following week v Collingwood where they put him on ball and he absolutely killed it...looked like Foley in his prime, if not Judd....but shown nothing as an on-baller since to suggest that wasn't just a flash-in-the-pan..think he even was dropped only a few games later :shh
As for his current role...been critical of him this year but starting to think the fact we're only able to watch the games on TV this year isn't doing him any favours.... :shh :shh

Without elite speed, his “one wood” is that he wears opponents down with his work rate.

Kane Lambert (Richmond): Only a few Tigers were really disappointing but Lambert had a particularly non-descript night. Had just the 13 touches and according to the AFL Player Ratings, he actually had a negative impact for Richmond until lifting in the fourth quarter. His midfield mates lifted but you still want to see more from a player of his calibre.

Forget Dustin Martin, Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt. Lambert, the former rookie who was overlooked in five national drafts, bobbed up for three massive moments in the final term. The 28-year-old worked through traffic to kick a goal after six minutes, before snapping to perfection from a deliberate out of bounds free kick deep in the forward pocket five minutes later. His majors were the Tigers' only two of the quarter. Then with the Power pushing for victory, Lambert won a crucial clearance with less than 30 seconds left to put the game beyond doubt.

Probably stating the obvious that Lambo's top start to this season has coincided with the return to longer quarters/matches. He is a running machine. The shorter quarters in 2020 definitely affected his game especially at this time last year.

After missing the last six matches with a calf injury, triple premiership player Kane Lambert will return to take on the Eagles at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
Hardwick admits he cannot wait to see the underrated “little man” back in action.
“Very, very, very excited,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

Abbey Gelmi has confirmed her romance with AFL star Kane Lambert after months of speculation.
The Channel Seven sports presenter, 31, told the Herald Sun on Friday: 'Kane's really good.'
She also revealed why she and the 29-year-old footy star made a perfect couple, saying: 'He's pretty shy and I'm not, so we're a good match.'
The pair have so far kept their relationship low-key with no photos on social media as of yet.
Abbey and Kane reportedly attended Sam Mac's book launch in Melbourne together back in May.
They were said to have been introduced by Love Island star Tayla Damir, who now engaged to Kane's Richmond teammate Nathan Broad.
The new relationship also comes after she recently relocated to Melbourne earlier in the year.

It’s understood the Lambert procedure would be similar to that undertaken by Michael Hurley, who had a hip joint replaced in September in a bid to resuscitate a career derailed by a serious infection.
Leading sports medico Dr Peter Brukner told SEN Hurley’s operation five months ago was known as a “resurfacing” and not as major as a full hip replacement.
Hurley has recently resumed running, but is yet to re-join full training at the Bombers.

"Kane's been managing a chronic long-term hip issue for a while now, the last couple of years. But, it's been manageable and he's been able to play quite a lot of footy. Last year, he missed a few games and was managing some other issues as well. But this pre-season, the hip has become a little bit more of a problem for him. At the moment, he's doing two running sessions a week in the rehab group and a little bit of football training. We just haven't been able to progress to the next level with intensity in our football drills. At the moment, Kane's getting some alternative therapies to help with his hip and is seeking various pieces of advice from professionals around his long-term management of that. At the moment, we're just finishing a course of some therapies with it. Today, he did two drills with the main group and looked quite good. Midfielder Kane Lambert will miss the start of the 2022 AFL season as he undergoes a separate training program to recover from a niggling hip injury.
The Tigers weighed up whether to place Lambert under the knife, which would have sidelined the onballer for a majority of the season, however have opted to "push through" with his recovery.
"Lambert is starting a training block now. So we saw some surgeons, had a couple of conversations but we're going to push through," Hardwick said.
"Hopefully he's not too far away."

Kane Lambert could be set to return for Richmond in the next week or so.
That is according to premiership teammate Jack Riewoldt who says the 30-year-old might be seen again in Tigers colours at either VFL or AFL level this weekend or next.
Lambert has been sidelined by a hip injury which at one point threatened to derail his season, but Riewoldt indicates that things have improved recently.
“Bit of a watch this space on Kane Lambert,” Riewoldt said on SEN Tassie.
“He may be playing this week or the week after which is very, very interesting.
“A very, very important player on the ground and around the club.”
Lambert is a vital player to Richmond’s structure highlighted by his hard running as a high forward doubling with his contested ball winning ability.
He played just 13 games last season due to calf, groin and hip issues, but in the preceding seasons was one of the club’s most important players during its triple premiership run.

RICHMOND free agent Kane Lambert is likely to get back into the senior fold after his hip injury before discussions on his contract start.
Lambert has played back-to-back games in the VFL after managing a hip injury over the pre-season but the triple premiership player is yet to get into contract talks to extend him beyond this season.
He picked up 25 disposals and kicked two goals last week at state league level.
The hard-working midfielder has been a central player in Richmond's flag era, with his defensive running and ball-getting ability a key factor in the Tigers' midfield under coach Damien Hardwick.
The Tigers have missed Lambert so far this season, with the 30-year-old not playing at senior level yet after 13 games last year in an injury-hit campaign.

Triple premiership star Kane Lambert has made an impressive return to the AFL across the past fortnight, collecting 22 disposals against West Coast and 18 against Collingwood, after overcoming a chronic long-term hip injury that threatened to end his career.
Hardwick praised Lambert's determination to play with an issue that would have forced others into retirement, but said the 30-year-old is a week-to-week proposition due to the state of his body.
"He puts his heart and soul into this. Waited a long time to get his AFL debut – he missed a lot of drafts – and he's not prepared to let his AFL career go. He'll do everything he can to play as long as he can. “It’s an incredible example for any player that probably didn’t think they had a chance, but when they do get the chance, of how to stay in there. Any other player wouldn’t be playing, guaranteed,” Hardwick said.
"He is week-to-week. He'll give me an understanding of how he feels today and whether he's right to go. Kane is always in my side, but it's basically up to Kane whether he plays or not. He'll train today and see how he feels, then give me a nod nod, wink wink if he's right to go. Otherwise we'll find another soldier. Hopefully he gets up."

"It is concerning. Any other player wouldn’t be playing, to be perfectly honest. What he does to get up for games is incredible.
"We thought we would get one – at a maximum two games – he's played the last four. Probably shows you how important he is that we start winning our games.
"His leadership both on and off the field is really important. He does effectively get a two-week break as well with the bye coming up. He is tough this guy, really, really tough. The game means a lot to him in fairness, so that’s why he keeps pushing through."

I prefer he retires.He is 30 he has a chronic hip problem that can only get worse with age and we cannot guarantee he will be available on a regular basis.
Once again i think we are missing the opportunity to bring on a player like Dow.
In saying that i understand his situation being a mature recruit and late starter to AFL. Been a darn good player for us as well but at some point we need to take every opportunity to get games into kids.
I suppose im just looking further down the track than others and am not so concerned about right now as this is definately the last throw of the dice for us and wth it being last throw i still cannot see us winning it.
Regularly play the kids in good strong sides with lots of experience around them and if we still make finals its a bonus.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has outlined his long-term fears for premiership star Kane Lambert, with a career-ending hip replacement looming as the only solution to his painful injury.
Hardwick said whatever games Lambert, the three-time premiership player who continues to battle a hip issue, manages to play this year are a “bonus” given the extremes he is putting his body through just to get on the ground.
Lambert was subbed off in last week’s Dreamtime win over Essendon, with the coach revealing the 30-year-old went to him at halftime and said “I think I’m done”.
“Any time a great player is out you worry. We got four games out of him in a row, and it’s no coincidence we win all of those games,” Hardwick said on Wednesday.
“To see what he puts his body through and to see him walk out of those change rooms at the end, he gives everything. To see him come to me at halftime, he said “I think I’m done”, shows how hard he works to get up.
“He’ll have a good couple of weeks break ... hopefully refreshed for the second part of the year. Whatever games we get out of Kane are going to be a real bonus from here on in.
“Where it leaves him long term we are not too sure, but there are very few players who would be putting their bodies through what he does every week. I’ll be pushing our very best players to get back and he’s one of those. It’s just what he can put up with.”
Hardwick said there was a surgical option, but it wasn’t a good one.
“There is … but it’s a hip replacement,” he said.
“He won’t be coming back from that.”

Well yeah if the ratio is 3 games playing then a 3 game break I doubt he’ll continue next season. I’m not sure that’s the case though just happened to be a 3 week break because we had the bye. I’m thinking it’s more like he needs a week off every 3-4 weeks which if that’s the case then I wouldn’t be getting rid of him in a hurry, that’s still around 15 games a season.

Yeah I thought if we could get 3-4 game blocks out of him he was still worth a 1 year contract extension given how important he is to our system. But if he’s taking breaks after every 1-2 games I’d say he’d be hanging it up at seasons end. Hopefully he can get his body right for one last finals run.

It’s not about the total wins they’ve played in, it’s the difference in our win/loss ratio when they play as opposed to when they don’t. And lamberts differential is clearly the highest in our team. So no, not an idiotic comment that only us ‘idiots’ would accept. Try a bit of humility from time to time, will do you wonders.

You’re joking right? In our premiership years he was our main conduit and link up player. Not to mention he would comfortably cover the most kms out of all players and run hardest offensively and defensively. He’s not Dustin Martin but he’s still a jet

Have known Kane since he ran around in Auskick on Preston City Oval. Absolutely quality person who dedicated himself to being the best player and person he could, and reaped the rewards of 3 flags, RFC life membership and the admiration of all Richmond people, and the wider AFL community.
Congrats on a stellar career, and all the best in retirement from the game. Hopefully he goes into coaching.

Lambert announces retirement

Three-time Richmond premiership player Kane Lambert has announced his retirement from AFL football effective immediately.
Lambert informed his teammates of the news today, citing his ongoing hip issue and the inability to contribute at the same level due to his fitness as the main factor.
The 30-year-old who was not drafted until the age of 23, having been passed up by 836 draft selections said the purpose of his career had never been to prove anybody wrong.
“My purpose has been to prove people right, the people that cared for me and gave me their time and effort,” he added.
“I am so fortunate to be able to thank those people.”
Lambert added that highlight of his exhilarating career was not about the premierships, but the company.
“It is not what you win, it is who you win it with, and it has been an absolute pleasure to share this journey with all our players, staff and members both past and present.”
The retirement brings to an end a brilliant 135-match career that started as a mature-aged rookie selection (2014 AFL Rookie Draft) via VFL clubs Northern Blues and Williamstown.
A relentless worker and admired teammate, the Tiger Army and AFL industry will best remember Lambert for his outstanding contribution to the Club's 2017, 2019, and 2020 premierships.
Lambert finished second in the Jack Dyer Medal in 2017, third in 2018, and eighth and ninth in the 2019 and 2020 triumphs; such was his consistency through this period. Despite missing nine games last season, Lambert (9th) featured in the top-10 for a fifth consecutive year.
The midfielder/forward also booted Richmond's only two final quarter goals in the Club's thrilling low-scoring preliminary final win against Port Adelaide in 2020, showing his excellent skill level. Lambert managed seven senior games in 2022, with the Tigers winning all of them.
Lambert's high standing among his teammates was underlined off the field by winning the prestigious peer-voted Francis Bourke Award in 2020 for best upholding the group's trademark values.
The popular figure also won the staff and player voted Bunjil Award on three occasions for his exceptional work driving similar Club values such as connection across the entire organisation.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick paid tribute to Lambert.
“What Kane has given us since he arrived at the footy club can never be repaid, but it can be learned.
“Dedication, resilience and all the things we talk about needed to get the best out of yourself, this man has done it.
“The way he played the game; we changed things based around him and how Lambert would do it. Watching him on the field is like a masterclass for an AFL coach.
“Kane has given us success, but he has also given us some of the off-field stuff that is going to last a long time.”

But Kane Lambert should be lauded exactly the same way. He's been brilliant for our Club from the day he walked in the door.

Im sad and happy at the same time. Sad becauae hes not playing again, happy because he can rehab the hip and his best life. This man has been an exceptional player and brave warrior in our jumper. I agree with WP Kane Lambert is a champion player. I hope Richmond give him a job in playerdevelopment or player welfare or something.

He was a mature age player which worked his absolute arse off to get into an AFL side. Does the selfless things and runs like an absolute machine. Also typically seizes the moments that are put in front of him. His goal kicking is pretty flash and reliable for a blue collar footballer . I will sorely miss him because his spirit, his hard two way running and 100% buy in to the Richmond way is a large part of our success.

An incredible story and career from a non drafted player. The best rookie we have ever drafted maybe ever in AFL.
I'll remember our dynasty with Kane at the centre of it, alongside Dusty, Cotch, Jack, Grimes, Nank and Edwards.

Congratulations to him. He is a great servant of this club. His contribution both on and off the field has been enormous. He made other players look good. His gut running and courage were second to none. So glad we recruited him. From the beginning he worked tirelessly to improve himself. He was selfless- a real team player. His improvement was a major reason for why things turned around in 2017 from the disaster in 2016. Reckon he will be in the future a very good coach if he chooses to go that way.

Amazing speech. Dimma wanting him to be inside our 4 walls gives me hope he stays at the club in some role. Ive never seen Dimma that emotional. On the verge of tears and he was holding it back. Kane's getting all the plaudits. He deserves them.

Agree Ramps was very emotional. And rightly so. Lambert is our dynasty. Hardwicks legacy. Our success revolves around the time Lambert impacted the club. Dimma even mentioned it at the end, Lambert being drafted ignited change. I think Dimma getting emotional had a fair bit to do with Lambert being probably his greatest success.
Our win loss ratio when he is playing vs not is incredible. He was incredibly important to our success.

Was one of my favourites when he first played I thought nothing more then a role player how wrong I was and one thing he is a big game player love the occasions and you knew when he was in the guts we were a big chance.

He will missed for what he does off the field as he did on the field , courage through gut running, leadership with respect for others, a never give up attitude

Kane Lambert has revealed the condition of his hip has deteriorated so much that he struggles to put on shoes and socks.
The Richmond triple premiership player announced his retirement from the game on Monday afternoon after struggling with the issue for the last few years.
Lambert, 30, says simple daily tasks have become challenging for him let alone playing footy at the highest level.
He provided some insight when addressing the media following his announcement.
“I’ve probably been a little bit scared to find that out, to be honest,” he said when asked just how bad it is.
“I’ve got osteoarthritis, it’s a lot of bone on bone in that hip so it’s not great.
“Day to day things like putting socks and shoes on, I don’t tie my shoe laces, can’t cut my toenails, getting in and out of cars is a challenge.
“It’s probably more emotionally and mentally exhausting than physically.”
The 135-game midfielder/forward is bracing to have the hip replaced one day.
“Whether that’s in the short term, I’d like to have a bit of a breather, let it settle and see what it looks like,” he said.
“Hopefully there’s alternative methods and medical advancements.
“But I think the long term at some point I will have the hip replaced.”
Lambert, who was selected by the Tigers in the 2015 rookie draft, is satisfied that he did everything in his power to continue playing.
He made an oath to coach Damien Hardwick that he would leave no stone unturned, however, came to the conclusion that it was the right decision to call time on his career
“It’s been a long time coming, to be fair,” Lambert added.
“I approached this year a bit uncertain whether or not I would play again. The last three or four years have been challenging.
“Something felt different about my hip, the way it was, this year. I remember pre-season trying to train and watching the boys go about their business and thinking, ‘I don’t know if I can do that anymore’.
“I made a commitment with ‘Dimma’ that I was up for the fight and the challenge to do everything I possibly could. To explore all sorts of methods in order to get me out and play.
“I was only ever going to play if I felt that I could help and I could contribute. Now I’ve got to this point where I’m not at a level that I feel comfortable contributing at AFL level and I don’t think it’s fair to put myself out there with the boys not being able to help the way I’d like to.
“It’s been a real challenge, but it’s the right time for me and right time for the group.
“I feel comfortable and at peace that I’ve done all I can to perform and I’m no longer at that stage where I can.”
Lambert managed just seven games this season and 13 last year having featured prominently in Richmond’s three premierships in 2017, 2019 and 2020.
The former VFL star finished third in the best and fairest in the drought-breaking premiership year of 2017 and second in 2018 when the Tigers made the Preliminary Final.
He has an interest in coaching and football administration and will remain with the Tigers in an off-field role at least for the rest of 2022.

Agreed and I think it will happen one day when grassroots girls football is more established and all our AFLW players have been playing since they were kids.
At the moment there's a lot of latecomers to football playing and it's similar to watching overseas recruits like Mason Cox running around. Great athletes, decent skills, but they don't have the ingrained natural ability that comes with 10+ years of practice.
Also the AFL has done the AFLW a disservice by expanding it much quicker than the talent pool can grow.

Decorated three-time Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick has opened up on a host of intriguing topics including Kane Lambert's crucial one-two-punch partnership with numerous offensive-minded Tigers, the controversial nature of Jason Castagna's early retirement, and his meaningful thoughts on superstar Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin.
Hardwick, who shockingly ceased his storied Tigerland tenure after Richmond's narrow 'Dreamtime at the G' defeat to Essendon in Round 10, also flagged his desire to "step back in" to AFL coaching during a jam-packed discussion on the Dyl and Friends podcast.
The host of Dyl and Friends, ex-GWS and Carlton footballer Dylan Buckley, surfaced the topic of Lambert and the unheralded defensive role the midfielder-forward played in complementing the attack-heavy game styles of Martin, Shai Bolton, Shane Edwards, and others of the like, throughout his highly-appreciated Tigers tenure.
'Dimma' stated they were hard relationships to describe, detailing Lambert's critical defensive job of supplementing a host of Richmond's attacking guns.
"Spot on, it's very, very hard to explain, even as a coach, we used to call (the partnership) 'Barry', it was a 'Barry and Larry' sort of thing," Hardwick began explaining.
"The reality is, Dustin's got some strengths in the game. Offensively, he's incredibly gifted, [but] defensively is where he's okay, but it's not his number one strength, so instead of getting Dustin to play as a defensive element of the game, because if we did that we'd be taking away his strengths [and] we'd lose the offensive impact, whereas Kane, offensively, was okay but defensively had a great understanding of role clarity, about what was required at certain times, and so those two worked in conjunction the whole time so Dustin could just play, Kane would basically be thinking for [him].
"Dustin's a bad example, [Lambert] did that for Shai (Bolton) and Shane Edwards and all that sort of stuff, but his role was really, really important because it complemented other roles, and that's what he did really, really well, and that's why those role players are so important to the fabric of, not only our footy club but every footy club, really."
