Title: Richmond vs West Coast @ MCG - Round 12, 2015 [merged]
Post by: Phil Mrakov on June 09, 2015, 01:21:23 PM
This is a game we'd traditionally lose, having just beaten the undefeated top of the table side as the underdogs. coming back from the bye and we'll also be heavy favourites.

I don't like that we'll be coming off the bye

Wouldn't  think so
They have a short break between last weekends game as they only arrived back yesterday afternoon
Then have another short break in there lead up against us
Good luck with that
Tiges by 6 goals

50/50 really.

I don't like us having the bye prior, but you can't help that.
I suppose if they come out switched on and ready to play we are a good show.
Hoping the crowd will get behind them on the big stage and be the 19th man  :shh

No, I think we'll beat them. Especially since it's here at the MCG.

Who has WCE beaten this year?
Carlton by 69 points (17th)
Brisbane by 53 points (16th)
GWS by 87 points (5th)
Port by 10 points (9th)
GCS by 92 points (18th)
St Kilda by 53 points (14th)
Geelong by 56 points (10th)

Lost to:
Footscray by 10 points (11th)
Fremantle by 30 points (1st)
North by 10 points (12th)

Beaten one solitary team inside the top 8, albeit a young team who will likely be inconsistent and IMO fade in the second half of the season.

Richmond has beaten two teams inside the top 4 and two battling for that top 8 in Port and Essendon. Look to be in really good form too. Griffiths/Vickery/Jack will stretch their already thin backline, Rance will nullify Kennedy, and I reckon our midfield will be too tough and too classy for them.

Only real danger IMO is their ruck setup and small/medium forwards but if our midfield keeps defending like they do, and Grimes/Batchelor stay in good form I think we will win comfortably. Maybe 30-40 points or so.

Agree that I think it is a 50/50 game. But I also think that we'll win this one, drop the Swans the game but get the Giants.

2007. The day Tambling kicked four goals in the first quarter.
Last time we played them at the G, We won by 49 and Jack kicked 10. ;D

I'll take some of the latter again next Friday week. :thumbsup

I think West Coast are going along nicely . Think they are a top 6 team this year.

Credit where credit is due - they have belted the opposition this year. You don't fluke 6 wins in a row.

I think they will be building themselves up as underdogs ... I'm a little nervous.

We should win though

You're right. We're stuffed. May as well have a fire sale on our talent and attack the draft.

Give it a rest and stop bashing our club you bloody pessimist. Collingwood and WCE are as good as each other and probably nowhere near contention.

You said Collingwood are a top 4 team that we have beaten along with Freo. There's a difference between beating a team that is actually top 4 and will be there all year and a team that's top 4 at this moment on the back of nothing wins against the bottom sides because of their easy fixture.

Who do you think will be higher on the ladder at the pointy end?

Collingwood, GWS or WCE? They're all 7-3.

Personally I think GWS and Collingwood will push for top 4 or at least round out the top 6. WCE I think will sneak into the 8.

Realistically the only top 4 teams with creditable wins are Freo and Syd.

Priddis and Gaff like you said.

Also Masten, Shuey, Selwood, then blokes like Wellingham and Yeo who can rotate through.

Combined with the ruck work of Naitanui and Sinclair we could have our hands full, but personally I think we'll get the edge.

Our first test on this winning run, on how we now handle raised expectations. The players will have had two weeks of backslapping from supporters who have hopped back on the bandwagon, glowing media reports even from usually Tiger baggers, and bookies having us as favourites playing at home in front of the Tiger Army. The Eagles are playing well this year and aren't in the top 4 for nothing. We will need to turn up with the same attitude and ferocity for the contest as they did against Freo. It's just not going to happen for us.

Wins over Geelong, Port (away like us) and GWS were their best. The rest of their wins have been against bottom 6 sides (Carl, Suns, Saints and Lions).

They did get flogged by Freo in the Western derby (unlike us) while they lost to both North in Tassie and the Dogs (like us). The North game they should had won but they kicked poorly for goal in the gale down there.

At our best, as we've shown in the past 4 wins, we can win this. We also match up well against the Eagles. However, we have dropped games like this many times in the past because everyone was expecting the win to just happen, especially playing at home, and the team turns up mentally not switched on. The Eagles also now have Jack Darling back in their forward line alongside Kennedy and Le Cras. They are no push overs this year. We will need to fight just as hard for this win as the past four.

WEST Coast defender Jeremy McGovern is in doubt to face Richmond next Friday night at the MCG after suffering a corked thigh in the Eagles' 50-point win over Essendon.

McGovern was subbed out of the game at three-quarter time and had ice applied to the injury immediately. He suffered the cork in the opening term and was hobbling throughout the match.

The Eagles face a second consecutive six-day break after a trip to Hobart last Sunday.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson admitted post-match that McGovern would be touch and go to be fit for the Tigers.

"I don't know if he's going to come up this week," Simpson said.

"It's a double corkie. But I think he may be a chance and hopefully the last quarter helped him, subbing him out."

The Eagles are thin for key defenders following the season-ending knee injuries to Eric Mackenzie and Mitch Brown at the start of the season.

Simpson said he might have to turn to untried 19-year-old Tom Barrass should McGovern fail to come up.

Simpson said the consecutive six-day breaks were not ideal. The Eagles were forced to rest several players from the WAFL this weekend, including Scott Lycett, Fraser McInnes and Jackson Nelson, to ensure they have reserves fit and available next week.

"(I'm) not complaining but it's just reality,” Simpson said.

“We've got two six-day breaks in a row going interstate against a side which has had 15 days off. So we had to plan this and we've got a squad available next week.”

Richmond has forward firepower to dominate undermanned West Coast defence

Jon Ralph
Herald-Sun
June 16, 2015

RICHMOND is perfectly poised to knock off top-four rival West Coast by exploiting its defensive frailties on Friday night at the MCG.

The Tigers are close to full strength and have their three forwards in career-best form against an Eagles side likely to miss star defender Jeremy McGovern.

His corked thigh and damaged left wrist has coach Adam Simpson rating him unlikely to play, with fellow backs Mitch Brown and Eric Mackenzie already out for the year.

It means if Richmond can win the midfield battles Jack Riewoldt, Ben Griffiths and Tyrone Vickery could get on top after seven goals between them against Fremantle.

West Coast might be forced to blood 19-year-old key defender Tom Barass to fill their defensive gaps after he was held out of the WAFL on the weekend.

The Eagles left three players out of WAFL duties, aware they faced consecutive six-day breaks as well as travel to Hobart and Melbourne in 12 days.

The Tigers have just Reece Conca (hamstring) and former captain Chris Newman (groin) out of their best side, with Newman likely to play a second VFL game in his return.

The game will also pit Richmond All Australian defender Alex Rance against West Coast’s Coleman Medal leader Josh Kennedy.

Richmond’s back six will also have to handle Jack Darling and Mark LeCras, with the Eagles having won seven of their past eight games.

A Friday night MCG win would hand Richmond its fifth consecutive win ahead of a clash with white-hot Sydney at the SCG the following weekend.

Richmond is coming off a 14-day break, with football manager Dan Richardson forecasting a settled team given no injuries against Fremantle.

Match preview: Tigers v Eagles

Nathan Schmook
afl.com.au
June 16, 2015

SUMMARY

With Richmond 4-0 and West Coast 3-1 over the past four games, Friday night's clash looms as a battle of two of the AFL's most in-form teams. Richmond, which has turned its season around with a less frantic game style, is fresh off a bye while the Eagles made short work of Essendon with a 50-point win in round 11. This will be the Eagles' only chance to play on the MCG before an expected finals berth. It will be the Tigers' seventh clash at their home venue this season.

R20, 2011, West Coast 22.15 (147) d Richmond 14.6 (90) at Domain Stadium
R12, 2010, Richmond 19.12 (126) d West Coast 11.11 (77) at the MCG

THE SIX POINTS

1. Richmond’s midfield was the difference in wet conditions against West Coast when the sides clashed in 2014. Brandon Ellis had 27 possessions with support from Brett Deledio (26) and Dustin Martin (25 and two goals).

2. The Eagles continue to be the No.1 scoring side in 2015, kicking an average score of 106.5 points a game. The Tigers are a long way back, kicking 85.9 points a match.

3. This will be the 40th clash between these sides and West Coast holds the advantage winning 23 games to 16. The ledger sits at 2-2 since 2011.

4. Richmond will be aiming for its fifth consecutive win. Since round seven they’ve kicked an average score of 87 points while keeping their opposition to only 68 points a game.

5. The Tigers and Eagles last clashed at the MCG in round 12, 2010, with Richmond winning by 49 points. In total they have played 14 times at the venue for seven wins each.

6. Shaun Grigg is on the cusp of breaking into the top 200 in the Official AFL Player Ratings for the first time since round 12, 2013. Grigg has enjoyed a fine season and is currently ranked No.210 overall and No.12 at Richmond.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …

Will Schofield. The Eagles' defenders have held up well in the absence of key defenders Mitch Brown and Eric Mackenzie, but a three-pronged Richmond forward line is looming. The entire West Coast backline could find itself under siege, with Jeremy McGovern in doubt due to a corked thigh.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 12 points

The crowd record is 40,313 (Subiaco R9, 2003). So 45k would smash it.

Our record home crowd against the Eagles at the 'G was 19 years ago: 37,482

Our first home game vs the Eagles at the 'G in 5 years too by the way.

Can the Eagles survive against Richmond?

What's a more surprising fact: that West Coast are still third on the AFL ladder or that Richmond, after starting out 2-4, are suddenly one of the form teams?

We'd have to lean towards the Eagles' efforts following the season-ending knee injuries to defenders Eric Mackenzie and Mitch Brown, but the Tigers have given things a real shake lately. With Richmond being one of four teams with a 6-4 record, the four premiership points up for grabs on Friday night will be crucial.

After the Tigers went to Perth and ended Fremantle's unbeaten streak at Subiaco before resting up in their bye week, West Coast are heading to the MCG on a six-day break. It's their second consecutive six-day turnaround, having played Essendon last Saturday after a game in Tasmania the previous Sunday.

The short week is hardly their biggest concern, however. Impressive defender Jeremy McGovern appears likely to miss the match with a corked thigh, and 19-year-old Tom Barrass will make his debut if selected in McGovern's place. Richmond are finally learning how to play Jack Riewoldt, Ty Vickery and Ben Griffiths in the same team with success, and against the Eagles the three talls will line up for their third game together this season.

The first (the win over Port Adelaide) was shortened by Vickery's ankle and knee troubles, but their latest, the victory over the Dockers, was a four-quarter effort that really only needed two to succeed. Below are the three players' heat maps from the win over Fremantle, with Griffiths on the left, Riewoldt in the middle and Vickery on the right.

The trio combined for seven goals – two each to Griffiths and Riewoldt and three to Vickery. But a closer look at the first half, during which the Tigers kicked 12 of their 15 goals to basically put the game to bed, helps to realise how the three players work together.

On the end of a floating kick from Taylor Hunt, Vickery marked inside 50 to score the opening goal. Riewoldt was only just entering the arc at the time, and Griffiths occupied his defender slightly behind. The next goal came via Griffiths from another mark inside 50 as he found himself free with Riewoldt an option along the boundary line.

With the tone set through those two goals, the forwards began to work the ground. Vickery won a 50-50 contest on the wing before Richmond earned a goal after a repeat entry. For the Tigers' sixth goal, Griffiths picked up a clearing ball from Michael Johnson and the turnover allowed Vickery to run free into the pocket for an uncontested mark.

Early in the second quarter, Vickery kicked from just in front of the centre-wing logo to a leading Riewoldt, who marked and converted from just outside 50. Griffiths was on his way to the pocket behind Riewoldt as the No.8 marked before teasing his man with a run to the goal square. In all, the three players had a total of 15 possessions between the arcs in the first half. (See below for heat maps for Riewoldt and Vickery, which show their willingness to push forward while one stayed at home with Griffiths.) The trio needed just eight touches inside 50 to kick their six majors as they contributed to the team's total of 12 goals from just 21 entries.

All of this is to say that if Luke McPharlin and Fremantle's makeshift defence (Johnson was substituted out of the game with a hamstring injury) struggled, then how can an Eagles side minus McGovern expect to compete against Richmond's three forwards? The answer might not be with their direct opponents but up the field.

One month ago, the Tigers began winning more consistently when they slowed their play down by controlling the footy and considering their options. It's worked well enough to defeat the previously unbeaten Dockers, but it was only last week that West Coast won a game against the same type of opponent.

Essendon played typical Essendon football at Subiaco, taking 110 uncontested marks (to the Eagles' 78) and winning the uncontested possessions 292-213. But the Bombers went inside 50 just 35 times, and that's not only down to their poor structures. West Coast forced 52 clangers, the most by an opposition that has conceded at least 400 disposals to Essendon since the start of the 2013 season.

Despite the Bombers' 10-possession advantage in the second quarter, the Eagles throttled their progress and whacked them to the tune of five goals to one. On the heat maps below, showing Essendon on the left and West Coast on the right with both teams attacking to the right, note how the Dons tried to escape down their right side but the Eagles continually won the ball back and sent it back inside 50.

The first goal of the quarter was a Jack Darling major that came on the end of a coast-to-coast run after a Bombers behind, and three of the remaining four goals were kicked after an Essendon turnover. Darling's first game of the year was a huge success, even if he had fewer than 10 disposals for the first time since the final match of 2013. The 23-year-old still chipped in with two goals, basically his career average, and it will be interesting to watch how the Eagles' forward line travels in the coming weeks.

As convincingly as West Coast defeated the Bombers, the first and third quarters were both much closer. It was the second and fourth quarters that built the home team's lead; in the final term, four of their five goals were sourced via Dons turnovers.

The in-form Richmond are a daunting task, especially in front of their home fans on a Friday night. Yet the Eagles, as battered as they've been, have proven that they can cover in defence magnificently well. Whether they can survive one more hit – assuming McGovern doesn't push through some pain to get up – remains to be seen, but the blueprint is there and they've still got the tools to win.

WEST COAST coach Adam Simpson is confident that key defender Jeremy McGovern will be fit to take on Richmond at the MCG after suffering a corked calf in the Eagles' round 11 win over Essendon.

...

The Eagles have the bye following Friday's game, but Simpson isn't looking past the challenge the Tigers present and a cold night game on the broad expanse of the MCG.

"We can't do too much to prepare for it here except put the sprinklers on, and we train at night and reduce the ground size at Subi but we can't make it wider," Simpson said.

"We've prepared the best we can and we don't get to play at the ‘G' too often, especially at night.

"I don't think you can replicate playing at the MCG in five degrees on a wet night."

Not desputing who is better, but are those stats when they ruck each other or is NicNats stats including hit outs against another ruck eg. Maric

Post by: DCrane on June 17, 2015, 10:33:11 PM
No it's not against each other YR.
And yes NicNat as a second ruck gets more of a go than Vickery does. There is also the 50 hitouts that NicNat got after Vickery knocked out Cox. That might skew the stat a little. But that's Vickery's fault lol.
Also, I doubt that Vickery has won 32 hitouts against NicNat. I like watching the ruck, I cannot remember him winning one single tapout against him, I'm sorry to say it has been a complete domination.
This all sounds very negative but overall I think Vickery has improved enormously in the ruck, he uses his body weight well to maintain position at boundary throw ins. Timing of his leap has improved and he is sharking it better. He is more aggressive in the ruck. I like it. He has to do this to survive and good on him.

I don't pay much attention to hit outs, I reckon they are overrated, but I like Vickerys work once it hits the deck. Not as athletic as NicNat but he definitely has good athleticism for his size.
Also I think WAT was more referring to their under 18 days when I believe Vickery did have the better of NicNat. But that was a long time ago now

Yes -Vickery definitely edged him when they went head to head in the U'18 champs....not quite the great scalp back then though as NicNat, despite all the hype and high draft position, was very raw & still learning the basics - much more of a pure athlete than an actual footballer. (some would even argue that's still the case.)

Most of the ground will be Richmond Wellsy, I reckon 50,000-55,000 approx.

If you are talking deep deep RICHMOND and youd like to give you mate the full experience, I would strongly recommend  the southern stand, punt rd end, M3 or M4 on ground level, halfway down to the boundary fence. Noisiest Richmond place on the planet, located an equal distance between the Cheer Squad and the grog squad.

You'll get the both get not only the colour and movement of the cheer squad but also the abrasiveness of the grog squad.

Bring a jacket too. Seriously you Sandgropers won't be used to the cold. The weather forecast is a max on Friday at 12 degrees. By game time it will be lucky to be in double figures.

Friday night will reveal whether Richmond or West Coast are the real deal

   David King
      Herald-Sun
      June 18, 2015 8:00PM

TWO teams are classic cases of unknown identities, the league’s equivalents of John Doe. Who are they? Where do they reside in the AFL landscape? No one knows.

The 2015 West Coast Eagles are a four-goal better outfit than last season, two offensively and two defensively, but still they receive little kudos.

Consistently they’re asked who they’ve beaten, but seven of their eight victories are by a minimum of 50 points. Surely that stacks up.

Only two teams have topped the 1100 points-for mark after 10 rounds — Hawthorn and the now potent Eagles. That should place them in premiership contention but, curiously, it has not.

And it’s easier to work out Rubik’s Cube than the mindset of the Richmond players over the past two or three seasons. Damien Hardwick’s troops have matured ... haven’t they?

The cold, hard facts are that Richmond can beat anyone on their day but, conversely, also can be beaten by anyone.

Wins over Collingwood, Port Adelaide and Fremantle in Perth in the past four weeks should have the Tigers in the top four conversation again, but apparently they are not.

Shock losses to Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs in the first month of the season highlight why we have trust issues.

Adam Simpson’s Eagles are one of the toughest outfits in the competition, averaging almost nine contested possessions more than direct opponents.

That is their most critical asset. It dictates whether they win or lose.

They have lost the contested ball battle only three times this season but it’s no coincidence that, each time, they did not come away with the four points.

Nic Naitanui still polarises opinion, averaging only 11 possessions and only one mark. The constant conversation concentrates on what he doesn’t do, but what he does is simply unstoppable.

If the West Coast is the real deal, just imagine his importance and focus in the big games late in September. I guarantee the knockers will change their tune.

Richmond doesn’t have a Naitanui, but it has a fast maturing leadership group that has recognised and employed a team-first mentality at the expense of personal glory.

Jack Riewoldt’s form mirrors the fortunes of the Tigers. Jack’s never looked more content with his football and has never worked as hard as he does now.

Richmond’s recent success has been the result of patient ball movement, maintaining time in possession while still moving the ball forward.

There’s much more north-south ball movement in the past month, rather than lateral and backward kicking employed early in 2015.

It will be strength versus strength at the MCG on Friday night.

West Coast is intent on locking the ball in its forward half and, when it wins, averages more than 13 minutes more than their opposition.

Richmond’s slower, methodical ball movement will be challenged exiting its defensive end and we know this has been the Tigers’ achilles heel.

The West Coast is dangerous off the back of the hit-out domination provided by Naitanui and the ever-improving Cam Sinclair.

The Tigers must be on their game at defensive 50 stoppages, because the Eagles have scored significantly more than any other team at forward 50 stoppages.

Jonathon Brown rates the West Coast forward six as the best in the league. Only Hawthorn has greater offensive productivity than the Eagles, who average 106 points a game.

The most daunting match-up for Richmond is Mark Le Cras. Alex Rance will go to Josh Kennedy — and both have been in stellar form — but the Tigers lack a gun small defender.

Dylan Grimes must stand up and assume this mantle after a solid Perth trip against Michael Walters, but Le Cras is slippery.

West Coast and Richmond each has match-winning individuals but the method of play will come into sharp focus under the Friday night lights.

I get the feeling the Eagles acknowledge the importance of performing at the MCG because they’ve won only three of their past 16 games there — all against the struggling Melbourne.

Both teams play strong brands of football that are in good order, but tonight’s result will answer just who these two teams are — muddling, mid-table drifters or top four challengers this year with the vision to premiership contention in the next two or three seasons.

It’s the classic two teams enter, one team leaves. On Friday night we learn the identity of these two great clubs.

Out of interest, our record first up post-bye playing non-bye teams since 2012 is 1 win, 2 losses.

Mind you thanks to last year, we have a record of one of the best season turnarounds post-bye (13th into the finals with a 38% chance in our winning record).

The Eagles on the other hand have fallen out of the top 8 post-bye in the past two seasons (2013-14).

Seems the longer the break between games the more we seem to have a fit squsd suddenly develop unreported injuries, what the hell do they do. With a more mature list we need to be able to cover for the "big" outs, hopefully we don't just fall in a heap and whoever comes in actually has an impact themselves.

Wce flood their forward line which means more tackles but it also
Means if we can work the ball out we look good to score which is exactly what's happened. We leave our forward line more open so less tackles but we set up well to give ourselves a good chance to kick the ball back in when the opposition do get it out

Richmond scored 3.1 from six inside 50s in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter, taking a three point lead into half-time, the first time it has been in front for the game.

Richmond has generated three goals from chains starting in the defensive half of the ground, the Eagles have none.

We get it out of centre but our half-forwards are reactive and ballwatching.

Ball on the wing/HB is fumbled about 4 times when we were in the clear.

Turn over the ball coming off HB.

We got beaten at our own game tonight.
Pretty true, they clearly did their homework in terms of our efficiency into the 50 arc, would love to know number of disposals per goal tonight, went via the Cape to get it in there and by then they it was so congested it was impossible to score. Of course if we try to get it in there quickly the with 3 talls once it hit the ground we were stuffed anyway, said it ad nauseum but we have to get an Eddie Betts style small forward and until we do we are simply one dimensional up forward. Having said this WC played a clever game against us tonight and with us being off our game they did what they had to do to close it out.

Cotch just said the Eagles had something like 23 intercept marks in our forward line.

He blamed the loss on us (i) being too fumbly around the ball which allowed the Eagles to get the ball moving their way despite us getting first hands and winning the contested footy, and (ii) us playing "dumb footy" going forward.

I think Dimma and the group were out coached tonight, 23 intercept marks in the forward line, simply goes to prove we allowed their extra man to run free. McGovern 8 marks all intercepts!!!!
When we did get some run forward Eagles clogged our forward line, we need the coach to restructure to address this. Obviously Dimma was forced to have an extra around the ball with Nic Nats dominance, so we are a forward short.

IWhen we did get some run forward Eagles clogged our forward line,

Yet again I've gone to a game to come away feeling frustrated and stymied by a side that's content to build the great wall of China in our forward line for the entire game, and turn the spectacle into an ugly, congested mess. Of course the AFL could fix this ugly, DISGUSTING blight on the game, by putting a meaningful cap on the amount of rotations per game. Hell, they even promised us last year that they'd do so, and give us back the game we used to love, instead of this rugby CRAP. Never mind bringing down the price of chips, and letting the kiddies have a kick to kick on the ground at the final siren. If you want to lure back the disgruntled fans that are leaving the game in droves FIX THIS BLOODY RUGBY ABOMINATION that you've let selfish, short-sighted coaches plunge the game into.

very hard game they played well but the umpiring was very bad.

Question; when there is a ball up & Maric & their player is grappling for the ruck. Nic Naitanui is payed a free kick for being blocked out of the ruck. So how is there a decision against us if Nic Naitanui is going to contest against Maric.  then who is the other guy grappling & blocking Maric. Why do they get the free when their player started the block on the ruck contest.

If UMPIRE #27 was not a corrupt umpire then l know nothing about football. He was over ruled by a umpire 50 metres away he was that bad. He tryed his hardest to not give free kicks he was all Eagles.

Other than that the Eagles  were just too strong & C Ellis going out early hurt us. Maric, Rance, Hunt gave them the game

Robbo's take on the loss:

7. Tigers:
Another big game and the Tigers blew it again. Started poorly by turning the ball over, recovered, and then lost the momentum again. It was one of those games the Tigers had to win. Batchelor took a step backwards, Griffiths was so-so, Edwards couldn’t influence, neither could Grigg, Maric was well beaten and Vlastuin didn’t have the same impact as he did against Fremantle. It’s not so much as back to the drawing board, but a reminder that 20 minutes of poor footy will kill you.

Cotch in the clear from the MRP:

Contact between Richmond’s Trent Cotchin and West Coast’s Scott Selwood from the fourth quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. The players were preparing for a throw-up when Cotchin made contact to Selwood with an open hand to the chest. A free kick was paid at the time to Selwood for the contact. It was the view of the panel the incident was dealt with at the time by the umpire and no further action was required.
