I liked another tall kid from swans Dylan Smith. The one i would have loved for us to get was Marcus Adams from wp. Real good size and at 22 ready to go. The other was Hartley the best state league kpd in the country imo.
Was Jesse Glass- McCasker drafted also from swan districts another real athlete and lovely size at 196/92.
I see Sam Menegola got drafted at 66 good luck to him if state league form is an indicator he will do well this time around.

From the Richmond recruiters
richmondfc.com.au
24 November 2015

Playing as a dashing defender, Nathan enjoyed a strong season at WAFL level with Swan Districts, averaging 20 disposals in 20 games.

The 22-year-old also managed to shut down some of the most dangerous forwards in the WAFL competition.

Broad was a standout at the West Australian state screening in October, running 24.04 seconds in the repeat sprint (better than any player in the national Combine) and recording a third-best beep test (level 14.1).

Originally from Wubin (about 250km north east of Perth), Nathan relocated to Perth when he was 16 and attended Governor Stirling High School on a sports scholarship.

Having been part of the Swan Districts’ development program for five years, he will enter the AFL system as a ready-made, mature-age player, who has the athleticism and competitiveness to play on tall and small forwards.

Now that is a highlights package!

Looks really talented and takes the game on which I like from a backman. Not one dimensional like Batch and Astbury....   Alex Rance like almost with his willingness to move the ball on... And hit every target too by foot.

I like the look of him.

There was a lot of talk about him over here but i have to admit hes one i didnt watch. I only watched about 10 wafl games and you tend to focus on players your interested in. In many ways  Broad looks good he could be a good fit  for us if he worked out.
I really liked Marcus Adams a 22 yr old from w/p who i think can play kp at afl. Unfortunately he went a bit earlier than i thought he would in the 30s.

Great to see the RFC recruit a player who can actually kick and hit targets. Seems to have been a major deficiency in past players. With the game played the way it is these days you have to retain possesion moving forward or you get continually punished for turnovers on the rebound. More players like Broad will help us to execute our game plan even better, looks a good prospect to me.

Eh for a defenders highlights video it's not great, all we see is he can kick when in space and one or two examples of him running at speed and take marks floating off the back of the pack.

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/2015-11-24/2015-national-draft-pick-67-nathan-broad

Takes one pack mark but not a punch or a tackle to be seen, I hope he can do those things you never know with RFC recruiters.

He is tall enough which is good and spots up options and adjusts his kick a few times also good.

Just from the reel he seems ok, I have reasonable hopes he will make it.  Lets hope he's got a bit of mongrel in him.

Not gunna bag the kid good luck to him.
I"m just disappointed we did not take the best available imo,  or  address some serious, greater  needs. Both Burton and Collins  were available and people know how much i have gone on about our talls over the years.

I suppose the flip side is we have finally made a heavy investment on a sml fwd.
needed a sml fwd - check
needed speed - check
needed a tall defender - check
need another ruck - hopefully we rookie one
i'd say we have drafted for need....

is he too small to play key defender ?

Broad's interview on 913 Sport FM:

AUDIO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-11-25/draft-2015-broad-on-sportfm-november-25th

* Complete surprise (to be drafted and by Richmond). I had no idea. I was nagging my manager to try and see what he could find out.  But, unfortunately he couldn’t find out, so just had to sit back and hope for the best. It’s still a bit surreal to be honest. It hasn’t quite sunk in fully yet.

* I missed out on being drafted when I was 18 and I’ve been playing in and out of the Swan Districts league squad for the last few years. But credit to Swan Districts for the way they stuck at it for me and the way they develop kids down there.  I just sat down with the club and worked on my deficiencies and what I needed to improve on at the next level. Luckily for me, I managed to string together all games this year at league level, which helps you a lot to make it at the next level.

* I wish I could get over there (Richmond) today. I’ve been out of home since I was 17, so the whole family side of moving out of home and fending for yourself kind of thing doesn’t faze me at all. I just want to get stuck into it now.

* What he brings to Richmond?
Hopefully some outside run and speed off half-back, maybe a bit of wing. Get over there and meet my teammates first and see what happens from there.

Batch is 188cm and this Broad dude is 191cm (if the sources are correct). Not much difference but with the added athleticism he ideally will be a better option to play as a tall defender (3rd tall is still a tall)

the quote says "needed a tall defender - check"  and we drafted two midgets, traded for a couple of fringe mids - hence im trying to work out of Broad is indeed this tall defender in question

he might be 4 cm shorter than our current dud but thats not much

“Nathan is 22 and he was outstanding for his WAFL club. He offers an element of speed and could play on a wing. He is similar to Jake Batchelor or Dylan Grimes — he can play tall or small.

“He is a player who if he gets a good chunk of the pre-season under his belt he can play early

“We are really pleased (Astbury) stayed. We had a really solid back six last year and didn’t have one injury.

“He realises how important he is to the future and we expect him to have a really good season. Those positions are up for grabs.”

* It was great. All the boys welcomed me really well. They were all good - they got around me and Oleg straight away. They’re an unreal club – you can tell already with the culture.

* Richmond weren’t really on the target to be honest.  Once a few of the clubs that I thought were the main interest passed, I thought I’ll start preparing for Friday's rookie draft and hope for the best. To get my name called out, third last pick of the draft, was a bit of a shock. I wasn’t really paying attention. When I heard my name, we (his family and friends) just looked at each other and everyone started celebrating.  It was a bit unreal to be honest. It’s finally sunk in, now that I’m here and training.

* It’s the first time I’ve ever done a 3km time trial.  I’m normally used to 2km time trials. It was a bit of a challenge but I just tried to figure out where I’d be with one of the boys. Good to get it done, knuckle down and try to put some size on in the gym.  I’m pretty happy with my time, so if I can improve on that then I’ll be stoked.

“’Broady’ was actually one of my good mate’s apprentices, so I’d met him before he was even drafted,” Alex Rance told Roar Vision last week.

“He’s definitely put in a good impression towards all the playing group so far.

“He works really hard, again reminds me a bit of myself from Swannies - he’s a bull at a gate.”

Mature-age recruit Nathan Broad has been particularly impressive, continuing a trend of older draftees to make their mark at Punt Road Oval.

The 22-year-old defender looks a "ready-made AFL player", Hardwick said.

"It's amazing those guys who have missed out on drafts, (Kane) Lambert was the same, you wonder how these guys don't get drafted," the coach said.

"They work incredibly hard and they're very thankful for the opportunity.

"You just hope they repay the faith."

Broad's odds narrowing for round one Tiger debut

AFL.com.au
February 17, 2016

PLAYING on star teammate Jack Riewoldt all pre-season has given mature-age Richmond recruit Nathan Broad a gilt-edged chance to now push for a round one debut.

Broad has been one of the Tigers' best trainers this summer and the West Australian will be unveiled in front of family and friends in Friday night's NAB Challenge clash against Fremantle in Mandurah.

It will be a chance for the 22-year-old to stake his claim in a backline that is rife with competition between medium and tall defenders.

Hard work has played a big role in the apprentice plumber's emergence this pre-season, as has some valuable tutelage from the Tigers' leading goalkicker.

"I've been playing on Jack for most of the pre-season and in the match simulation stuff and he's been great," Broad told AFL.com.au.

"I like to take the best player if possible to better myself.

"Playing on Jack, he tells you where he doesn't like defenders to stand and what makes life difficult for a forward, which helps a lot.

"He's a very good forward, so if you get the chance to play on him you can learn a lot of things."

At 192cm, Broad concedes three centimetres to Riewoldt – and 180 games of AFL experience– but he has been able to showcase his speed, clean ball use and composure consistently.

He was particularly impressive in the Tigers' most recent intra-club match, showing he can also be used as a rebounding player.

"High-speed running and endurance is my strength, so I try and play to my strengths and use that in games," he said.

"Back home I was a rebounder defender, I'd try and get the touches as well as lock down on my man so I think I'll have a similar role here."

Getting a chance on an AFL list at 22 means Broad is willing to do "whatever the coaches ask" in training.

It's an approach that paid off in his time at WAFL club Swan Districts, where coach Greg Harding cut to the core with his feedback in 2014, while Broad was playing reserves.

"He was absolutely brutal in telling me what I needed to hear … that I wasn't being composed and I was just blazing away," Broad said.

"He wouldn't play me at league level until I fixed it, so I just worked on my composure and hitting targets and had a good pre-season."

Broad went on to play 20 league games in 2015, averaging 20 possessions and re-emerging as a draft prospect.

Training is naturally more intense now and the AFL game plan needs to be studied, but the Dongara product is feeling comfortable at Punt Road Oval.

"If I keep trying to improve every day at the club, I can't see why I can't play round one," he said.

Lost every one on one contest he was involved in however, provided great run of the HBF. He is not an AFL key position player yet and should only be played as a hard running HBF until he learns how to use his body in a contest and gets a bigger body. Plays a similar role as Grimes not Batch.

Thought his first half was poor, struggled with the pace of the game

Improved in the 2nd half but thought he stuggled on the bigger bodies

Was OO but based on last night would not warrant a game in round 1

I do expect however, him to play all 3 NAB games to try and fast track his development

In fairness most players take time to adjust to the tempo.

He did look all at sea at times last night, but most of the team wilted under Ports pressure.

If we wrote every player off who struggled with the tempo of AFL footy in their first few games it would be like a merry go round

Richmond development coach Ryan Ferguson discusses the impressive return from long-term injury of the Tigers’ mature-age selection in the 2015 AFL National Draft, Nathan Broad, in this week’s ‘Coaches’ Corner’.

His running ability

“That was one of his strengths pre-injury, and he was able to keep his running up (in rehab), being a shoulder injury. He got a lot of work on the legs and he’s come back and used his power running as a real weapon in his last few games . . . He’s probably taken it to a new level, to be honest . . . He was a really good defensive runner, and since he’s come back, he’s incorporated that into the offensive side of his game. That has added an extra element to his game, which is great.”

Intercept improvement

“That’s something he’s added to his game, also. I worked with him early in the season about when he’s in position, to mark the ball, rather than to spoil . . . And, on the weekend, he took six intercept marks. So he’s added that to his game.”

One-on-one defensive development

“Another thing he’s been working on really hard is his strength over the ball – aerial and ground balls. He’s been really strong. He is a strong boy in the gym and he’s been able to transfer that on to the track and then into games.”

Increased versatility

“He can play as a tall, small, runner, an interceptor . . . He’s got some more aspects to his game these days . . . The last few weeks, he’s been playing on all types (of opponents). We’ve used him as a third-type defender. We like to get him up the ground and being able to run. But also, if there’s a third tall that’s important to them (the opposition), he can shut those down as well.”

Spending some time forward

“He likes the idea of that, too . . . He’s actually been a good linkmen, when he’s gone forward. He’s been able to get up the ground, take some marks, provide a bit of a link in the chain. And I think he’s enjoyed running around up the other end . . .”

Pressing for senior selection

“The way he played on the weekend . . . he’s in career-best form, and he’ll be putting his hand up to play senior footy. Obviously, the coaches have got to talk about that in match selection, but he’s doing all he can at the moment. Hopefully he gets a run shortly.”

Tattooed Tiger Nathan Broad finds a kindred spirit in Dustin Martin

Shayne Hope
West Australian
6 August 2017

One of the most significant moments in Nathan Broad’s season to date didn’t occur in front of thousands under the bright lights of the MCG, nor on the sacred turf next door at Richmond’s famous Punt Road home.

It transpired in more intimate surrounds at a small Greek restaurant in Moonee Ponds.

It was there at Philhellene that a tight gathering of wounded Tigers assembled to celebrate the second-year defender’s re-release into the AFL jungle; a tradition conceived by club conditioning boss Rob Innes.

Broad had spent more than two months under Innes’ watchful eye, slogging away in the rehabilitation group as he rebuilt strength in his right shoulder.

“It’s a dark place to be,” the 192cm defender said.

“You’re here at the club before everyone else, you’re training away from the group and you don’t get to see them that much.

“But the things Rob does, not just at the footy club but outside of footy, keeps it very entertaining. You obviously don’t want to be there, but he definitely makes it more enjoyable.”

Broad could hardly have picked a worse time to get the first and only injury of his career so far, either at Richmond or in his five years at Swan Districts, where he developed into a player worth taking a chance on as a mature-aged pick.

“It was two days before round one,” Broad said.

“We were just doing a drill and I was on Jack Riewoldt. We came into another pair, all four us kind of hit and my legs got tunnelled out from underneath me.

“I landed on my head and did the AC. You could tell straight away that it was serious. It was just an unlucky accident.”

Almost immediately, Broad knew he had to simplify his goals.

“It’s difficult. You’re out of contract and I’d only played two games in my first year,” the 25-year-old said.

“I just tried to block all that out and get back as fit and strong as possible through my rehab.

“It was a good opportunity to get one-on-one personal training. I wanted to get back playing consistent footy and enjoying footy because it’s not very fun on the sidelines.”

Broad arrived at Swan Districts as a bright eyed 17-year-old from Dongara, via tiny Bindoon, with dreams of becoming an AFL star, but didn’t take the conventional route to the big league.

Picked in WA’s extended under-18s squad, he didn’t get a game at the 2011 national championships and went undrafted.

That squad produced first-round draft picks Jaeger O’Meara, Stephen Coniglio and Tom Mitchell, as well as future premiership players Brad Hill and Joel Hamling.

Broad had to fight, spending four seasons bouncing between Swans’ league and reserves teams. He was inspired by teammate Blaine Boekhorst’s surprise selection by Carlton in the 2014 draft and honest feedback from senior coach Greg Harding.

It led to steady improvement and, eventually, Broad was drafted as a 22-year-old from Swans with the fourth-last pick (No.67 overall) in the 2015 national draft.

Upon arrival at Punt Road, he found he had something in common with the club’s resident superstar, who turned out to be nothing like the preconceived ideas the new recruit had of him.

Dustin Martin, Broad discovered, was more reserved and cared deeply about teammates.

The persona contradicted the tattoos in which the on-field aggressor and showman was covered. But the ink was an immediate link to the man who is now the raging Brownlow Medal favourite.

Some of Broad’s most prominent tattoos are “just because I like them”. Others, such as the unmissable ‘Broadie’ script decorating the right side of his torso, have more meaning.

“I’ve got a rose for every female member of my family; two nannas and my mum and that,” Broad said.

“I’ve got the swallows because they don’t forget where they’ve come from.”

Not that his mates back home would let him forget.

After a half-hour interview and before resuming his preparation for the weekend’s game – his fourth in succession since being recalled to the senior team — Broad will check his phone.

There will be “40 or 50” messages waiting to be read in a group chat with Perth-based friends.

Broad’s early strength was playing on the small forwards as a taller player.

But the 192cm defender lacked the aerial ability, core strength and technique to take on the big forwards.

Assistant coaches Ben Rutten and Ryan Ferguson have been crucial to his development, as has champion goal kicker Riewoldt.

“He’s someone I try to go to,” Broad said.

“He’s a very smart footballer and someone who’s willing to teach you while playing on you. He always wants to help you and help others.

“He’ll tell you things that forwards don’t like and how they run away from the space that they want to come back into.”

Publicly, Richmond players and coaches will tell you the 2017 season is a week-by-week prospect, despite the fact they occupy a top-four spot going into tomorrow’s date with Hawthorn at the MCG.

But the Tiger Army hasn’t enjoyed a finals win in 16 years.

Their last premiership was almost four decades ago and the bandwagon is reaching capacity.

“If we get a final here, Swan Street will be in lockdown. It will just be ridiculous,” said Broad, who has played the past three games and is desperate to hold his spot with four home-and-away matches remaining.

“But we’ve still got a lot of work to do before finals.

“We’ve got the Hawks this week, who are flying, so we try and keep a lid on it.

“The old cliche is one week at a time, but that literally is what it’s like with us at the moment.

“We’ll see how we go.”

Good flexibility with Grimes (both can play small or tall). Gives even more freedom to Rance. Also means if anyone goes down forward/ruck we have a bit more flexibility to cover that without being exposed down back. As long as he keeps playing his role he stays in

Thought it was his best game last week but I didn't think e was great, just reasonable. Still to many "heart in the mouth" moments for mine with his decision making and disposal

Will confess I certainly still not a believer, just see him as a back up / depth player. Would rather Short every day of the week

Returning Tiger gets housemate's backing

Jennifer Phelan
afl.com.au
Apr 11, 2018

BRANDON Ellis says Richmond is a stronger team with defender Nathan Broad in it and wants his housemate to return to the side this week now his club suspension is over.

Broad was suspended for the opening three rounds of the season after using a messaging app to circulate a topless photo of a woman without her consent after last year's Grand Final win.

The 24-year-old had told the woman, who was wearing his premiership medal in the photo, that he'd deleted the image.

It was the incident that marred the jubilant celebrations of the Tigers' premiership win over Adelaide, with a long investigation ending with a chastened Broad publicly apologising to the traumatised woman and accepting his sanction on October 30.

Even though his suspension officially ended on the weekend, Broad hasn't been guaranteed an automatic call up to the side for Saturday's clash with Brisbane at the MCG.

Ellis, who shares a house with Broad, believes he should come straight back in now that he's served his sentence.

"I want him to play. I love playing with him and I think we're a stronger team with him in it," Ellis told AFL.com.au.

"He's in good form at the moment, he's as fit as anything, and he fits into our backline really well.

"But we had a good win on the weekend so it's a selection headache for the coaches, which is a good problem to have."

Broad last played for the Tigers on Grand Final day, where he was solid against Adelaide forward Tom Lynch.

He has since taken part in one JLT Community Series game and ran out in the VFL last Saturday where he showed decent form without blowing the game apart.

Ellis said Broad would bring "another dimension" to the team if he was recalled and allow their other defenders to take on other responsibilities.

"He can play on a tall player if we need him to, he can play on a smaller player if we need him to," Ellis said.

"It frees up me and Bachar [Houli] to play up high and also 'Shorty' [Jayden Short], and 'Tigger' [Nick Vlastuin] is sort of the same, it allows him to play even better

"So, I think 'Broady' coming into the team will be fantastic for us and make us even stronger."

Short was in good form against the Hawks last week while Reece Conca was solid after moving into the midfield after half-time, which will further complicate discussions at this week's match committee.

After Sunday's win, coach Damien Hardwick forecast the selection squeeze that could make it hard for Broad to make an immediate return.

"He's an elite runner, we love what he brings to our side and he's an important player to us," Hardwick said.

"We're pretty lucky; Broad's available, [Josh] Caddy's available … and Dion [Prestia] is a wait and see but my thoughts are at this stage he'll be available.

"We've got some good players that are going to make selection tough, but we're pleased with the way the guys are playing at the moment.

"We've got some good players who are not playing AFL at the moment."

There’s another player who I reckon now has taken the tag as the most under-rated Tiger.

Broad possesses a good blend of pace, strength, football ‘smarts’ and toughness.

That toughness really came to the fore against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium last Friday night, when Broad reported for on-field duty with the Tigers after missing just one match because of a fractured cheekbone that he suffered in the Round 16 victory over Adelaide.

In typical style, there wasn’t the slightest hint of hesitation with the way Broad went about his backline business on the night.

He finished the match with 14 disposals, an equal game-high seven intercepts and a game-high three intercept marks.

Today the news on my scans were better than first thought but for sure someone above was looking down over me yesterday. Here is a photo from the game I came across last night that struck a cord with me overnight on reflection,” he wrote.

“A photo of Nathan Broad helping me up after I hurt myself. An act of sportsmanship and kindness from a good friend and opposition player.

“Broady and I actually started our footy career together in the U12s at our local club Upper Swan FC and then continued with Swan District both with aspirations and dreams of one day potentially getting drafted and playing in the AFL. Not for the first time yesterday, we were doing exactly that — playing AFL on the MCG of all places.

Not a bad first 50 games.

IMO he has lost a bit of that confidence he had when he came back from that injury he had in 2017 but he is still a very important player in our back 6.

If you were to pick a weakness it would be defending the “high ball” when playing on a tall.
Seems to take his eye off the footy at the last minute.

Sunday's win takes Broad's winning strike rate to 80% (40 wins in his 50 games) which is the best for any current day player.

Nathan Broad has set a new record for the highest winning percentage among current-day players in the AFL competition who have played a minimum of 50 games.

Broad believes he'll be fine following Prelim concussion

By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
21 Sep 2019

Dermott Brereton spoke to the Richmond defender in the rooms after the game and said Broad is confident of his availability for the Grand Final.

“I got to speak to him after the game and said how are you feeling? He looked at me and said ‘yeah I had to come off, but I’m feeling fine, I can’t see any real problems’,” Brereton told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“He was very together and with it. I think if you were looking at playing tomorrow, I think he’d put his hand up.

“So I think the extra day, looking at an eight-day break, I think he’ll be fine.”

'All Friday is gone': Tiger's hazy recollection of prelim

NATHAN Broad has needed to review the preliminary final win over Geelong a little more closely than his teammates, revealing he can't remember the match after being concussed.

The key defender appeared stunned in the third term after colliding with teammate Jayden Short and then an opponent's leg as he fell, sitting out the remainder of the match.

He has been cleared to play in Saturday's Grand Final against Greater Western Sydney after training strongly all week.

"My memory was a bit all over the place, so you question if you're going to get up and train and play," Broad told afl.com.au.

"Once I got into the club and saw the doctor, I was pretty confident that I'd be right.

"Pretty much of all Friday is gone. But from Saturday onwards, waking up, I've had no headaches, I'm feeling great, I've passed the tests, so I'm good to go."

Nathan Broad came off worse for wear after a third-quarter clash last Friday. Picture: AFL Photos

Coach Damien Hardwick and his teammates have been quick to seize the opportunity to "fill in the gaps" in Broad's memory, much to their own amusement.

"Apparently, I owe 'Dimma' a hundred bucks, which I think is a bit of a lie, Dan Butler reckons I owe him a hundred bucks too. There's been a few gags thrown around to try and get me, but it's all good," Broad said.

Saturday's match will be Broad's second Grand Final after playing in the 2017 triumph, but young teammates Jayden Short and Liam Baker will be running out in their first.

Short played up until round 18 in 2017 but was forced out of the side by the returning Bachar Houli, while Baker only joined the club at the end of that year.

"I've had little tips here and there, but really it's just embrace the week and play your normal game and just enjoy it as much as you can," Short said.

"It's been an awesome week, and this is where you want to play football. I'm looking forward to today (the Grand Final Parade) as well."

The 21-year-old Baker started the year as a forward but will be lining up at the other end of the ground on Saturday after a mid-season switch.

"It's actually been all right. I was a bit scratchy early, but I've got better as the year's gone on. I'm loving it down there at the moment, playing my role for the team, and the back seven's pretty settled now," Baker said.

"The nerves aren't too bad yet, just excited, looking forward to doing the parade and all that comes with it.

"It actually has been a normal week, [but] with the extra excitement, the parade, the extra messages and media. Hopefully from now until the game, everything's the same."

Nathan Broad – 6

Played his role superbly. Was responsible for Harry Himmelberg and, while the Giant came up the ground to get some touches after half-time, really minimised his influence. An early spoil on Jeremy Cameron when he had no right to influence the contest help set the tone.

NATHAN BROAD 6

A thorn in the side of the Giants with some of his intercept possessions early. The third-last player selected in his draft and remains underrated.

Two-time premiership player Nathan Broad has revealed his jaw-dropping back tattoo completed on a recent trip to Bali.

The native Indian tattoo was completed at Flash Ink Bali and covers Broad’s entire back.

The West Aussie was already sporting a tattooed left sleeve and stomach art before the trip to Indonesia.

The ink surely surpasses that of teammate Dustin Martin, who has both sleeves and various other tattoos across his body including his neck and legs.

Broad, who sat out the start of the 2018 season after the topless premiership medal photo controversy, has played 54 games for the Tigers since being drafted from Swan Districts with pick 67 in the 2015 AFL National Draft.

While a number of footy fans were impressed by the tattoo, calling it "sick" and "insane" on social media, others were less impressed.

Slow news day.

Flirty-looking duo get Cup Day tongues wagging

Herald Sun
November 9, 2019

There is always one couple that is all the talk around the marquees and this year it was Richmond premiership player Nathan Broad and Love Island hottie Tayla Damir in Tabcorp. Whispers on Cup Day were the flirty-looking pair, who both hail from Perth, were once an item.

But then a pesky photo of a topless woman wearing the Tiger’s premiership medal turned up back in 2017. Suffice to say they broke up and Tayla went on to, er, mend her broken heart on reality show Love Island.

Tayla Damir and Nathan Broad at the Melbourne Cup.

Pity the bloke she ended up with forgot to mention he was still in a relationship.

That’s what you call a two-timing try-hard.

Word is Tayla had the last laugh though.

The Tigers premiership player was banned by the club for the first three games of the 2018 season after circulating a photo of a nude young woman donning his prized premiership medallion, taken in what he described as “drunken” celebrations.

Had the woman chosen to follow through with a criminal investigation, he could have faced jail — up to two years.

“I take full responsibility for what I have done. I sent a very private picture, without this young woman’s consent,” he said.

“I’m ashamed and embarrassed and I made a very bad drunken decision.”

Broad’s mum Terry said after this year’s premiership triumph, there would be no repeat of the 2017 behaviour.

“We’re going to take the phone off him and his medal, then we’ll be safe … I think,’’ Terry quipped.

Agree to disagree.

I think he's a player of limited football ability but 110% effort. Tough, athletic & plans big or small. His efforts vs Hipwood in R23 + QF were excellent examples.

Your absolutely joking Lobb had a day out and Broad barely touched the pill. We do like our battlers.

My opinion he did what he was required to do covering for Nank. His job was to compete, which he did and then gave us run  through the middle. Kicked a crucial goal too.

As I said I was there and his work rate was outstanding

Love Island's Tayla Damir cosies up to AFL star beau Nathan Broad

Tayla Damir confirmed her romance with AFL star Nathan Broad on New Year's Day.

And on Saturday, the couple looked to be going strong while at the launch party for restaurant and bar Meu Jardin in Sydney.

Becoming a real Mr Reliable. Grimes has become Rance and Broad is becoming Grimes. Balta becoming Astbury.

Very strong leadership we have down back and excellently coached by Leppa!

His bad games so far between maybe one out 8 or 10 not more often.Reliable plays on talls or smalls and huge running capacity very underated here he goes leaves a big hole for me who replaces him.

Hardwick said Broad’s inclusion would help solidify the team’s back six, which will be without Grimes for the first time since Round 3, 2019.

“He probably, from our point of view, was not playing that poorly, we just had players playing better,” Hardwick said at his press conference this morning referring to Broad’s recent omission.

“He comes in in good form and we are very confident he will be able to do the job.”

Similar stuff. Close friend of mine met him, got the 'I'm so misunderstood but you really get me' crap, then ended up being treated the same as the other bird the morning after. Never spoke to or acknowledged her again once he got what he wanted.

At last year's player sponsors dinner Broady was on my table (and no I don't sponsor him) and we had a great chat. Found him to be a really good bloke interesting to talk and good for a laugh.

I wasn't much of a fan after the 2017 medal fiasco because I felt he let the Club down and what he did the young lady was wrong / horrible.

But after the dinner they way he treated people that night my opinion changed. He was first class with everyone on the night went out of his way to engage with everyone.

How did we all see Broady's return to the side?

11 disposals (6k, 5h, 3c, 9u, 72.7% eff.)
5 marks
2 tackles
6 intercepts
99 metres gained
89% time on the ground

Nathan Broad

Coming into the side, Broad had 11 disposals and five marks, but was largely quiet given six of his touches came in the final term.

Nathan Broad – 8
Had a rough start early, hitting his head on the turf and spending some time off the ground, but returned with a bang. In the absence of Nick Vlastuin, Broad's intercept marking – including one running back with the flight in Geelong's goal-square – and intensity in defence was crucial to the win.

Nathan Broad
Got winded early and was largely influential. He did show courage on multiple occasions to run back with the flight and spoil or mark the ball.

Broad finished the match with 15 disposals, six marks, three rebound-50s, six one-percenters and an equal AFL career-high/team-high 10 intercepts.

Although it was one of the best performances of Broad’s 72-game career at Richmond, he again escaped the media spotlight.

But, with three premiership medals, and a winning strike-rate of 79.86 percent, Broad, undoubtedly, is more than happy continuing to fly under the radar and play his role for the Tigers.

Your club's underrated performer Round 11:

Richmond Tigers: Nathan Broad

The Tigers have lost some personnel over the course of 2021, but one thing is for sure: Broad will forever give 110 per cent no matter what, and he did it again on Sunday.

Broad had 21 touches (18 kicks) and used it at 85 per cent efficiency. He took an elite four contested marks among ten for the game and had five rebound 50s, three score involvements and 514 metres gained, which ranked him second for the Tigers.

Dimma's post-match comments on Broad:

"He's had really great year has Broady. He's been consistent throughout and gets the job done most weeks. A great story for a player that got drafted at around 23-24 y.o. That's why I think we need to reward those players. We're very fortunate he came to our footy club mature and having learnt his footy craft at Swans District. Comes in and plays in his first year. A real good learning curve for clubs that there's some good players out there that can step in straight away and fulfil some roles".

Kept Ryan in check for the majority of the game and really couldn't find fault with his effort or execution of the last contest that led to the Ryan 12.2 metre pass

Reckon he would be easily top 5 in our B&F at this point

Broad restricted Liam Ryan to just seven disposals and one goal, while racking up 22 disposals, with three rebound-50s, eight marks, nine intercepts and 232 metres gained himself.

Broad is averaging 16.2 disposals, 6.2 marks, 3.7 rebound-50s, 6.8 intercepts, 4.3 one-percenters and 253.3 metres gained per match this season and would have to be figuring prominently in the Jack Dyer Medal count.

22 disposals (14k, 8h, 3c, 19u, 86.4% eff.)
9 marks
5 tackles
3 inside 50s
5 intercepts
371 metres gained

Meanwhile, triple premiership Tiger Nathan Broad is off the club's out-of-contract list after it emerged he had quietly hit a trigger for a 2023 extension.

It is understood Broad, whose deal was previously set to expire at the end of this season, reached the trigger last year and will extend his time at the Tigers into an eighth season.

Broad signed a two-year extension at the end of 2020 after speculation about a move to Gold Coast. The West Australian played 14 games last season and finished equal 10th in the best and fairest.

Nathan Broad is enjoying the best year of his AFL career at Richmond.

The triple Tiger premiership defender, in his seventh season at the game’s highest level after being recruited from WAFL club Swan Districts, is averaging 18.9 disposals, 6.8 marks, 5.7 rebound-50s, 6.4 intercepts, 4.2 one-percenters and 320.1 metres gained per match.

He is ranked No. 7 in the competition for marks and No. 9 for rebound-50s.

Broad’s performance against Carlton in the blockbuster Round 14 clash at the MCG, was an encapsulation of how well he’s performing this season.

With 22 disposals, six marks, a game-high 11 rebound-50s, four score involvements and 469 metres gained, Broad was one of Richmond’s best in the 15-point victory over the Blues.

There are no frills with the way Broad plays his role in the Tigers’ backline – it’s minimum fuss, but maximum efficiency.

His ability to combine tight defence with rebounding flair makes him such a pivotal member of the Yellow and Black line-up.

I was sceptical too. Couldn't quite figure out what his strengths were. He wasn't overly tall, not heavy/strong built, not great by foot etc.

But since 2017 he has improved drastically by foot and his pace and tank allow him to play very well as a small, medium or backup tall. 100% effort every single week.

And I still have that photo on my phone in the messages somewhere.

Thanks Broady.

Across his AFL career, Broad is averaging 13.3 disposals, 4.5 marks, 3.0 rebound-50s, 5.1 intercepts, 4.5 one-percenters and 204.3 metres gained per game.

This season, he is averaging 19.1 disposals, 7.1 marks, 5.8 rebound-50s, 5.9 intercepts, 4.3 one-percenters and 338.0 metres gained per games.

In the lead-up to his 100th game, which will take place against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday, Broad reflected on the path to Punt Road and the success that has followed for him.

“Missing four drafts in total was pretty hard. The first two were probably the hardest because I was still young and thought I was a chance,” Broad said.

“The dream was still there, but the chances probably drifted away a little bit. So, I just really enjoyed playing WAFL footy . . .

“I loved playing for Swan Districts. Had a good bunch of mates around me . . .

“No-one saw anything in me, missing all those drafts.

“I’m just so grateful that Richmond gave me an opportunity.

“Drafted at 22 and didn’t think I’d play one game, let alone 100.

This trigger extension was alluded to back in June (https://www.afl.com.au/news/776137/suns-look-to-lock-in-star-pair-talks-ongoing-with-dual-flag-tiger) but confirmed by the Club today.

Broad hits contract extension

Triple premiership defender Nathan Broad will remain at Richmond for the 2023 season, having hit a trigger to extend his playing contract.

The 29-year-old has had arguably his best individual season at the Club in 2022, averaging career-highs in every major statistical category.

Broad who ranks #1 at Richmond for marks and rebound 50s, #2 for kicks and #3 for intercepts, said the new attacking layer to his game was a focus of this year.

“During the pre-season I had a look at blokes around me and those that were up and coming,” he said.

“I was a bit of a lockdown and defensive player. So, I probably had a bit of a thought to myself that I needed to add another string to my bow.

“It was something I worked hard on over pre-season and have added it to my game now which has been a positive.

“I am very grateful to be going into another finals series and then my eighth season. It is very exciting- I am stoked."

Broad has played all 22 games this season and is set to embark on the fifth finals campaign of his career.

Richmond General Manager- Football Talent, Blair Hartley said Broad had worked hard behind the scenes since arriving at the Club.

“Nathan has put in a lot of work since coming across from Perth late in 2015 to continually improve his game,” he said.

“He has been rewarded with individual and team success across the journey and we are pleased to retain him at the Club for longer.

“We look forward to seeing what he can continue to help us achieve across the next year and beyond.”

Former WA reality star and AFL WAG Tayla Damir marries Richmond Tigers star Nathan Broad

Former Love Island star Tayla Damir has married her AFL beau Nathan Broad.

The brunette beauty, who hails from WA, shared a breathtaking snap from their wedding early on Tuesday morning.

Captioned, “Mr & Mrs Broad -17.10.2022” the newlyweds were congratulated by famous friends including Bec Judd, Abbey Gelmi, and Alisha Aitken Radburn.

The Instagram post included three different photos including one of the pair kissing at the alter, a second one outside after the ceremony, and a third that appeared to be taken at night with fireworks in the background.

Damir wore a gown by Oglia-Loro Couture with her hair back in a bun and simple accessories.

While Broad wore an MJ Bale suit.

Their ceremony was held in the Gold Coast hinterland, with their friends and family in attendance.

The 25-year-old Myer model previously revealed to The Herald Sun last month that the couple would be enforcing a no-phone policy at the wedding.

“My biggest thing is I want to see everyone’s face rather than the back of phones so in that case it will probably be a no-phone wedding,” she said.

The pair announced their engagement last June with the special moment caught on their security cameras.

Wedding fever kicked off for the couple last month as Damir went all out for her hens do with a lavish weekend at Crown Melbourne.

Just last week, Damir revealed she has been diagnosed with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and dyslexia in a TikTok video.

It’s not the first time Damir has opened up to her followers about her mental health and struggles in her life.

Former reality TV star Tayla Damir has revealed she is a survivor of domestic violence in the wake of Johnny Depp winning his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.

Broad hails from Wubin and was drafted to Richmond in 2015.

The couple were first rumoured to be dating back in 2019 after they were snapped together at the Melbourne Cup.

Bloke is very underestimated in all areas. While he is acknowledged for defending he provides heaps of run and rebound which goes virtually unacknowledged. He may be tall but he plays like a medium.
He was our leading rebounder leading mark and was only behind Tarrant and Gibcus for Spoils 1percenters.
He is probably the first defender picked every week.

Their only major rule for the day was simple: phones down.

“My biggest thing is I want to see everyone’s face rather than the back of phones, so in that case it will probably be a no-phone wedding,” Tayla told the Herald Sun in September.

“It’s really quite a refined wedding, with really close family and friends.”

The new bride said she was “loving it in Melbourne” since relocating from WA, and that it “feels like home”.

And yet many left him out our Best 22 for round 1 next year. Don't understand why except for the crunch that adding Hopper and Taranto will force the likes of Short out of the midfield. If everybody is fit round 1 he still should be in.
Sheesh i agree with all of that.
Some supporters now want to play Short in the backline at the expense of Broad. Its like they don't see what Broad brings to the table especially the run and rebound.

For those supporters who think that way here are a few simple questions.

Who in the midfield is he in front of??. He is imo definately behind Martin, Cotchin, Prestia, Hopper, Taranto, Bolton, and Sonsie. He is behind or in a fight with Graham and Baker also.

Who in the backhalf does he play in front of?? Simply put Rioli has shot past him and the rest of the backline speaks for itself, Vlastuin, Broad, Grimes, Tarrant, Balta, and also the need to play Gibcus. Im picking every single one of them in front of him as a defender and then there is pick 17 developing a kid called Brown.

Okay who in the fwd half is he a better option than??. Simple answer is no one. Every day of the week Bolton, Martin Sonsie as mid rotations are better. M Rioli and Cumberland are just better fwds as smalls and the you have the likes of the talls.

Most wont even contemplate it but the arrival of Taranto and Hopper. The emergence of Rioli as a backman really has Short in the 23 - 26 player bracket probably along with Graham Ross and dare i say it Baker.

Or we play short in defence instead of Gibcus because why would we ever need 5 190cm+ defenders in the team at the same time? If Gibcus is to get in the side then he’ll need to take the spot of 1 of the 4 established talls in the side. Also still have Miller who can be thrown back on top of the 4 talls if the situation really calls for it.

Besides I thought you were all aboard the balta as the third tall forward train so why are you now naming him in defence……

Wow. I must be mistaken in reading this. Am I correct that you are saying we have depth on our list to force Short out of the team?  For me Short will still be top 22 (or maybe 23 this year). If everybody is fit it's going to be very interesting selecting the team. Anyway this is the Broad thread and I'm glad you made his value in the team and should be in.

Really we have regularly played with 4 talls since we recruited Broad. then we also have Vlastuin who can play a bit taller than his 187cm.
We can do this because and a blind man can see it Broad and Grimes have the ability to play on talls mediums and smalls.
we have mids today who are bigger than Grimes and Broad.
Broads versatility is what makes him so valuable we can play him in a running role of hb which we do at times and in the same game we have played Grimes on blokes like Charlie Cameron.

FFS Broad can and regularly does play a running role while being accountable to an opponent. He shuts down smalls and mediums and he has played on talls. The run and rebound he provides is imo greatly undervalued. Last year he was our leading rebounder yet we rave about the likes of Rioli. He was third for one percenters which implies as a backman lots of spoils which shows just how accountable he is.
He also took 140 marks more than any one else which sort of leads us into intercept marks.

It is laughable when talking about Broad and Short one is accountable provides heaps of run and rebound and plays on all types of fwds usually managing to nullify them as well. The other  sits outside is poor defensively panics under pressure and is fed the ball by all and sundry but boy he can kick it 60metres.Every day of the week  a blind man would pick Broad in front of Short in defense.

Where oh where did I ever mention playing short ahead of broad????? Also where oh where did I ever say there was anything wrong with playing 4 talls???? It’s like you’re having an argument with yourself.

We have typically played 4 talls + vlas and 2 small running defenders. It was Rance, Astbury, Broad, Grimes, Vlas, Houli and Short and now it’s become Tarrant, Balta, Broad, Grimes, Vlas, Rioli and Baker. That has been the structure of the defence for the best part of 6 years now and is looking to continue that way this season.

Your original comment that I responded to listed Tarrant, Balta, Grimes, Broad and I quote “the need to play Gibcus”. That’s 5+ 190cm defenders out of 7 in our 22 which is why I commented that there is a place for short in our defence because we have more or less always rolled with a 4-tall defensive unit.

So before you start pulling out your FFS’s and Sheeeshhhh’s try reading the comment you are replying to.

I can see we are going to have to do this one player at a time to make you realise he is not needed in defence midfield or forward for that matter.
Besides i just gave Broad a huge wrap it is after all the Broad thread sorry it went off tangent a bit in relation to your post..

So we have established Broad gets picked in front of Short and there are some who say Short should play in front of him. Fmd one jouno didnt even have Broad in the side. Hence the comparison
Next one is does Short get picked in front of Vlastuin. Cmon lets see you say yes. Different players different roles and certainly different ability to defend an opponent.
While im at it Short won't get picked in front of the 4 talls we have always gone with after all Grimes Tarrant and Balta are talls and Broad makes 4.
It leaves Rioli well well well he won't be getting a gig in front of him either. In one season Rioli has shown why we must keep on trying likely types across hb having shot past Short in the role not that it was  that hard to do.

As for Gibcus apologies the comment was meant to be along the lines of we have to find ways to keep on getting games into him regardless of whos spot he gets.  5 talls well it depends on the roles doesnt it.  Grimes plays small which he has done a lot.  Broad plays as a runner and rebounder as does Rioli which both do regularly. Tarrant and Balta get the big fwds and Gibcus plays the Grimes role as third tall.

Yes on Balta i still advocate we play him or Miller as a fwd but why bother voicing it when its obvious the club will play him back.

Do we go thru the mids and forwards not many will argue as a mid he is behind Martin, Taranto, Cotchin, Sonsie, Bolton, Hopper and Prestia.
Its even been suggested he play wing in front of either Pickett or McIntosh lol.People desperately looking for a role for him at the expense of others better suited.
Atm Cumberland Rioli are in front as fwds and we would be crazy not to have Clarke next cab of the rank if injury hits.

It leaves the bench imo it should go Miller for obvious reasons, Cotchin, Sonsie and Baker leaving Short in a fight with Graham and Ross as the sub.

Its like a veil has come over supporters and they have lost sight of the need to actually get games into kids. Instead we are looking for ways to deny them games now that Taranto and Hopper are here and Dusty is back.

Its simple play the best player for the role in the role do that and all of Ross Baker Graham and your mate Short are fighting for a bench spot or sub spot at best.

I hope the likes of Gibcus Brown, Clarke Miller Sonsie  and Banks find a way to establish themselves in the 22 this year most people arent even contemplating it. it might mean a favorite who played in a premiership might miss out.

I don’t think we need to keep going on about this.

Structure wise we will play 4 talls. Tarrant, Balta, Grimes and Broad will be automatic when fit unless their form falls off a cliff in which case Gibcus and Young will be next in line. We are blessed that both grimes and broad are capable of playing and playing well on smalls. And like you said broad (especially last season) is capable of providing run and rebound, that is not his primary role and depending on his matchup he may be preoccupied locking down on a forward.

Then we will play vlastuin as a medium who can at a stretch play on a tall although not ideal. His primary role has generally been to float around the defence, intercept attacks and use his elite disposal to kick start the attack. Like Broad, vlas is also capable (even moreso) of proving run and rebound out of defence but that isn’t his primary function back there.

So those 5 we can agree on, they cover us against the opposition key position forwards while also being versatile enough to lock down on smalls and provide some run and carry too. But that still leaves 2 spots in defence for those smaller types whose primary role is to provide run and carry out of defence. I think everyone can agree that based on last season, d.Rioli has cemented himself as our number one option for this role. So the last spot is the sticking point which this conversation should be focused on. To me there are 2 obvious players for this last spot, that is baker and short. Personally while I don’t think short is a bad midfielder by any means, from what I’ve seen baker is a better in that role while also being a handy small forward. With that being the case I would play short in defence and baker as a mid/fwd however the club feels the opposite based on last season and this pre-season.

As for the other defensive options you have mentioned;
- Gibcus is a key position defender or at a stretch maybe that medium interceptor type.
- Miller seems to have settled into that second pinch hit ruck role which I think is great for us as he gives us the versatility of also being able to play pretty handily in defence or as a forward depending on the in-game situation.
- Brown seems like a vlastuin regen to me. Structure wise I could see him taking one of the ‘rebounding small defender’ positions however the kid hasn’t played a single AFL game and I think even his biggest fan would struggle to describe his vfl form as anything more then good/promising. Let’s give the kid time to develop, if he starts dominating at vfl level, sure bring him in, but he’s not getting picked as is ahead of AFL tried and tested multi time premiership players like baker and short.

I sure hope that closes the discussion as I honestly hate clogging up these threads with these super long posts especially when this moreso belongs in the short thread not in broads.

AFL star Nathan Broad lifts lid on graphic childhood injury: ‘Hanging out like a chook’s neck’

‘They were making phone calls around the world. They had no idea what to do.’

Ben Sutton
7news
17 February 2023

Richmond triple premiership hero Nathan Broad has spilled details on a gruesome injury he suffered when he was younger.

The AFL star was rushed to hospital by his dad after he was almost dismembered in a bizarre incident.

“I was 12, I was in the pool for a long time at home, you know when your hands go really wrinkly,” Broad explained on Triple M.

“I got out and me and some mates were mucking around kicking the footy … I was running backwards and my mate was trying to tackle me and I tripped on my own feet and his knee kind of kneed me in the groin a bit.

“Had a look and ‘the old Johnson’ was hanging out like a chook’s neck. Lucky the beans were there because they held it back. If it wasn’t for the beans then (it could have been a lot worse).”

After calling his dad over to inspect the damage, they made the decision to rush to hospital.

Broad hails from the remote Western Australian town of Wubin, which is 272km east of Perth, so waiting for an ambulance was not really an option.

When arriving at the hospital, Broad said the staff “were blown away” with what they saw.

“They were making phone calls around the world. They had no idea what to do,” he said.

“It was literally just hanging by the beans and it went all the way round back to the start like paper mache, perfect cut. Hardly any blood.”

“After a while they knocked me out – had a lot of phone calls and meetings with what to do.

“Essentially they stitched it back up … they took a few inches off me I reckon.”

The good news is Broad suffered no long-term issues from the accident.

He and reality TV star wife Tayla Damir recently revealed the exciting news they are expecting a baby girl.

The couple took to Instagram to announce their news, with a photo of Damir cooking with her baby bump showing and the caption, “Cooking for three,” followed by a hatching chick emoji.

The Richmond star and his Love Island winner wife also shared a photo of their ultrasound and a picture of them hugging while holding their dog and a sign, which said: “It’s a girl!”

Broad, 29, and Damir, 25, and were married last October in Queensland in an intimate ceremony attended by close family and friends.

Richmond Tigers defender Nathan Broad says extra time would be ‘pretty cool’ after drawn season opener

Craig O'Donoghue

March 17, 2023 1:18PM

Richmond defender Nathan Broad has thrown his support behind playing extra time during the home and away season after the Tigers’ dramatic draw against Carlton on Thursday night.

The Blues and Tigers started the season locked on 8.10 (58) after Tom Lynch tied the scores with a goal inside the last 20 seconds.

It was the third draw in Broad’s career, which included the round 19 match against Fremantle last season. Teammate Jack Riewoldt has now played in eight draws.

Drawn finals are decided by extra time and the former Swan Districts defender said there was no reason the players couldn’t continue playing to find a winner.

“It’d be pretty cool I reckon,” Broad told The West Australian.

“The boys are fit. When it comes down to that, it’s just all mental. It’s who can mentally stay in it for longer.

“We had a bit of momentum there. What a way to start the season. It was a cracking game.

“That’s my third draw which is pretty weird. We were down until we kicked that goal to draw it, so we’ve got to be happy. If it was the other way around and we were up until they kicked a goal, we would have been sad. It’s crazy that 120 minutes comes down to that.”

Broad said Richmond’s ability to restrict Carlton key forwards Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay to a combined four goals and to hold the Blues to less than 60 points showed concerns of the Tigers’ backline weren’t real.

While Broad, Noah Balta, Dylan Grimes and Nick Vlastuin lack the height of some backlines, he said their ability to work together showed what they are capable of

“People doubted us and said we were too short or underdone which probably made us try harder. We kept them to 58 points which is amazing.

“They’ve got some amazing forwards. We love being the underdog. We like to be the hunters.”

For Broad, the start of the season continues a whirlwind time since the 2022 campaign, marrying his partner Tayla who is now pregnant with their first child.

Broad said his life off the field was at an all-time high.

“I’ve got my beautiful wife Tayla and I couldn’t be happier. She’s doing well. She is a superstar,” Broad said.

“Life is awesome. Everyone is healthy. I’m rapt. It’s all kind of happened in one year. I got married and we’re having a little baby girl now. Life’s great.”

I heard plenty about this tackle all afternoon, but first impressions after seeing the video I felt it really wasn't all that bad.  Broad does exactly what every player does when tackling an opponent - went hard to wrap him up & took him to ground to force a stoppage.  It was actually a first class tackle.  There was no high contact at all, his head hitting the ground caused the concussion, but it was more unlucky than careless.

I dunno, but I've seen plenty worse than this not even get looked at ...    :-\

In the classic (illegal) sling tackle the tackler goes to the ground first, then pulls his man down & slings him across his body.  Tremendous leverage & centrifugal force can be generated by the slinging action, but Broad did nothing like that.  Broad had both arms around his man all the way to the ground, there was no significant slinging action.

The guy's arms are pinned in the tackle and he slams him into the turf. Broad didn't mean it, the umpire should have stopped it, but it was a poo tackle.

Broad apologises for sling tackle, Crows confirm Parnell concussion

By Lee Gaskin
afl.com.au
26 March 2023

RICHMOND defender Nathan Broad has apologised to Tigers coach Damian Hardwick for the sickening sling tackle that is expected to see him sidelined for Friday night’s blockbuster with Collingwood at the MCG.

Broad could be looking at a lengthy early-season holiday for the dangerous hit on young Adelaide defender Patrick Parnell in Saturday’s 32-point win over the Crows at Adelaide Oval.

Parnell spent a couple of minutes on the ground before he was helped off the field by club trainers and was subbed out of the game in the first quarter.

The Crows' high performance boss Darren Burgess confirmed post-match that Parnell had suffered a concussion and had been placed into the League's concussion protocols, effectively ruling the 21-year-old out of next round's Showdown.

“Nathan came and apologised to me, and he’ll apologise to the young man as well,” Hardwick said.

“It was just one of those ones, no-one goes out there deliberately trying to hurt a player.

“(It was) in the heat of the battle and he’s got a duty of responsibility. He knows that and we understand that. That’ll be dealt with during the week.”

Richmond defender Nathan Broad looks set for a date with the tribunal and a minimum three-match suspension for his dangerous tackle on Adelaide’s Patrick Parnell.

Broad’s tackle should be graded careless conduct, high contact and severe impact, as the Crow suffered concussion, was subbed out of the game and will miss the ‘Showdown’ against Port Adelaide this weekend.

‘That’s a six weeker’: Great calls for HUGE ban for brutal ‘car crash’ AFL tackle

Ben Cotton
Fox Sports
March 26th, 2023 11:15 pm

North Melbourne legend David King has called for the AFL to draw a line in the sand and hit Richmond defender Nathan Broad with a massive a six-week ban for his brutal sling tackle on Adelaide’s Patrick Parnell.

Both Broad and Port Adelaide’s Ryan Burton copped heavy penalties for their dangerous tackles on the weekend. Broad was referred directly to the tribunal, while Burton copped two weeks for rough conduct on Collingwood’s Jamie Elliott.

Broad’s tackle was more severe, slinging Parnell into the turf on the sidelines after play was dead in Saturday’s Adelaide Oval clash and leaving the Crows youngster concussed.

The incident was graded as careless with severe impact and high contact — the maximum charge.

Speaking on Fox Footy’s First Crack, King labelled Broad’s tackle a “horrific incident” and a “car crash,” saying he’d be “really disappointed” if it only results in a three or four week ban.

“We’ve got one chance to stamp this out, and unfortunately, Nathan Broad and the Richmond footy club have to pay a price. That’s a six weeker for me,” the dual premiership Kangaroo said.

“You have to say: ‘Guys, you know the rules.’

“We stuffed this up with the bump totally and we’ve got all sorts of trauma with past players and we’ll be court for all sorts of reasons and all sort sorts of finances will drift out of the game.

“But players know with this one, they know when they’ve got a guy cold. That poor young fella there — Patrick Parnell — we can’t say what his injury is today.

“Because he doesn’t have a broken arm or broken leg, the trauma he’s going to suffer is down the track potentially. The game now has to get this right, you’ve got one chance, don’t stuff this up.

“If you give that six weeks, it will not happen again for the year. The grading was careless, high and severe — that’s the max. So don’t tiptoe through this one.”

As King alluded to, it comes as a widespread of past players have recently launched lawsuits against the AFL due to the ongoing effects from concussions sustained during their playing days.

The Kangaroos great suggested tackles like Broad’s and Burton’s were “history repeating” and believes it’s time to make a stand against them once and for all for the welfare of players.

“We’ve gone through three years of talking about head trauma and eradicating the bump. The sling is the next war,” he added.

“We had week one where we tiptoed and we didn’t really get it right — we’re still not getting it right in terms of suspension — to have a deterrent that absolutely says to players: ‘No grey area here.’

“We have a prime opportunity right now to take this out of our game. This has been given two weeks.

“I don’t care what you say. As an AFL player, once you know you’ve pinned the arm, it is a duty of car to look after that player you’ve got.”

Former Hawthorn sharpshooter and fellow First Crack panellist Ben Dixon agreed with King, emphasising the duty of care from a tackler when they pin an opponent’s arms.

“We play a contact sport, it’s not a collision sport,” he said.

“When the arms are pinned, the duty of care is the tackler — the lift, the arm and the spin — it’s just not what they teach now.

“So that’s a forceful action and Kingy’s spot on the money — the head trauma is not there right now, it’s later.”

Dual All-Australian Leigh Montagna added: “In my opinion, getting your head slammed into the turf is worse than getting bumped.

“Round 1 it was bump week, Round 2 it’s the sling (tackle). Hopefully now after the first two rounds, every player is on notice and understands (the repercussions).”

From Robbo's dislikes column:

7. Three-week Broadside

Dangerous dump tackles are still in the repertoire, and although Nathan Broad apologised to everyone, the fact is Broad’s throwdown of Patrick Parnell was a crude opportunity to hurt. If Adelaide’s McAdam received three weeks for a late bump on Jacob Wehr, then Broad has to sit for the same amount of time, for Parnell was left in worse shape than Wehr. It was a brutal and illegal dump tackle, which adds weight to the argument pushed by Collingwood great Scott Pendlebury last weekend that a sin bin be implemented.

The AFL has created this mess.
The reason it is an issue is because players are trained to tackle pinning the arms so a “handball” can’t be used by the tackled player.
If you could use your arms to brace against the ground contact it would be much better.
Rugby and league allow leg tackles and ankle taps, both of which give the player a chance to protect themselves with ground impact.

It is a contact sport, I noted several sling tackles this weekend not resulting in injury and nothing was mentioned.

It seems now that you can tackle anyone any way as long as there is no injury ?

So a football action (tackle) is now the same as deliberately decking someone off the ball & worse than sniping after a player disposes the ball. Welcome to the roulette wheel that is the MRO/Tribunal who make things up as they go. The Club should appeal for a lesser sentence. 3 weeks was more than fair punishment. Broady copping an excessive punishment for the AFL going soft on Kosi Pickett and others.

And does the umpire(s) closest to the incident, who failed to blow his whistle when he should have, accept any responsibility for the incident? Players play to the whistle. If the ump had blown his whistle as soon as the ball was clearly pinned in the tackle, then the Adelaide player would've stopped resisting the tackle and Broady wouldn't have had the instinct to be more forceful with the tackle and bring the Crows' player to ground.

Change the rules this time on tackling and make Richmond the side to be the disadvantaged example
I understand the AFL’s intent as it is to mitigate against concussion claims but not apply the interpretation consistently where other players from other sides performed a sling tackle shows the bias .

Verdicts are in: Tribunal makes call on Broad sling

By Michael Whiting
afl.com.au
28 March 2023

RICHMOND defender Nathan Broad has been suspended for four matches for his sling tackle that left Adelaide's Patrick Parnell concussed.

All eyes were on Broad's case though after Match Review Officer Michael Christian charged him with rough conduct for his tackle, which was graded as careless conduct, severe impact with high contact.

In 50 minutes of evidence, the AFL pushed for the lengthy ban, saying the tackle was "moving towards a higher grading of severity" and compared it to a four-week suspension suffered by Scott Lycett in 2021 for a similar tackle on Ned McHenry.

The AFL said aside from Parnell's concussion, there was further potential to cause injury.

Broad pleaded guilty, with his counsel Sam Tovey asking for leniency and a three-week ban due to his "good character".

But the Tribunal decided the offence was serious enough to warrant four games, with chairman Jeff Gleeson offering a warning to all players.

"We repeat tonight, players must do all they reasonable can not to cause avoidable head injuries to fellow players," Gleeson said.

"Every player is now taken to be aware of the damaging and sometimes long-term consequences of concussion.

"If not for the early guilty plea to all elements of the charge and the clear contrition (shown by Broad), our starting point for the sanction may have been more than four matches, but taking into account all the circumstances I've mentioned, we start with a base sanction of four matches."

Tovey pushed hard for the suspension to remain at three weeks, saying that although the tackle was "self-evidently harmful", the three-time premiership Tiger showed genuine remorse and had not been banned in 110 AFL and 45 WAFL games.

He said from the moment the incident happened, Broad showed his care, immediately telling opponent Darcy Fogarty he shouldn't have done it, apologising to Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks, and then sending Parnell a text.

"I don't want you to accept my apology, but I shouldn't have done it," the text read.

"Sorry mate. It was sh*thouse. I hope you're ok and recover well."

Tovey said it was not the same as Lycett's tackle on Crow Ned McHenry in 2021, which earned the Port ruckman a four-week suspension.

Richmond argued Broad was spinning Parnell to take him over the boundary line, whereas Lycett's was in open play and he deliberately tossed the Crow over his shoulder and into the ground.

Broad will miss matches against Collingwood, Western Bulldogs, Sydney and Melbourne.

It is clear that the Tribunal has given significant weight to the principle of general deterrence and has placed very little weight on Nathan's remorse. This case has attracted significant media attention and the Tribunal has made this decision in a climate where the issue of head injuries is at the forefront of the AFL's mind. If this case is meant to set a precedent then the Tribunal should not differ from this approach in other cases. Given the performance of the Tribunal in the past I have significant doubts about its ability to be consistent. Although personally I thought the decision was harsh I am not sure whether the Club will appeal it.

Pickett's was worse. Late hit, jumped into his head, only saved because Smith is a hard unit.

Imagine brushing past McCartin and giving him a concussion with your fingertip and copping a month off because he was knocked out!

Logue will probably avoid being sighted but IMO this cheap shot is far far worse than a poorly executed tackle. Running past the ball to shirtfront belongs back in the 20th century. Logue only lucky Will Day got up afterwards. The AFL is only pretending to care about concussion when it says this sort of stuff is less worthy of punishment compared to what Broad did.

AFL logic:

Tackle executed wrongly and the opponent gets concussed = 4 weeks minimum.

Similar sling tackle that by pure luck doesn't cause concussion = 1 week.
https://twitter.com/AFL/status/1642457175560982529

Running past the ball and shirtfronting an opponent that by pure luck doesn't cause concussion = 1 week after club appeal fails.

Chicken wing tackle where the player ends up going face first into the turf but by luck doesn't cause concussion = a fine.

WORK TO DO FOR TIGERS TO KEEP KEY DEFENSIVE PILLARS

Jon Ralph, Glenn McFarlane and Jay Clark
HeraldSun

Richmond has work to do to lock away key members of its backline with Nathan Broad and Noah Balta both out of contract.

The Tigers are hopeful their new-look backline including talls Josh Gibcus, Balta and 24-year-old Tylar Young can play together for many years.

Young played soccer and cricket until he started playing footy seriously with North Albury in 2019, and has made an immediate impact in his two games since making his debut.

He held Darcy Fogarty to one goal in 39 minutes head-to-head and kept Taylor Walker and Riley Thilthorpe goalless, and then last week kept Brody Mihocek goalless in 104 minutes as a head-to-head match-up.

Balta was exceptional with nine intercept marks against Adelaide.

Balta’s talks haven’t ramped up but as a 23-year-old athletic freak the Tigers will have to pay up for his services.

They also have Kamdyn McIntosh as a free agent so there is a bit to do for list boss Blair Hartley.

West Coast linked to Richmond free agent Nathan Broad

West Coast reportedly have Richmond free agent Nathan Broad on their radar, while fellow Tigers defender Noah Balta is said to be nearing a call on his own future at Punt Road.

Both premiership players for the Tigers, Broad and Balta are key pillars in Damien Hardwick's defence as Richmond look to have their say on the flag race in 2023.

The duo are among a host of players at the Tigers that are off-contract this year, with rival interest in Broad said to be on the rise as he weighs up a decision ahead of free agency.

Broad is eligible to exercise his rights as a free agent and most recently added an extra year to his contract in August last year to recommit to Richmond for the 2023 season. That extension followed his two-year deal from 2020, where he rejected reported interest from the Gold Coast Suns to remain at Tigerland.

Further interest in his services is now reportedly coming from the west, with the Eagles seeing Broad as a viable asset for their future planning.

According to AFL reporter Damian Barrett, the Eagles are expected to express some level of interest in the 29-year-old this year amid a plan to lure the three-time premiership defender back to his home state of Western Australia.

The Eagles are on the verge of re-signing veteran defender Jeremy McGovern to a new deal, while best and fairest winner Tom Barrass is locked in for the long haul after inking a five-year deal in 2021.

Broad would be seen as a reliable third option in defence, a role he has held formidably under Hardwick through Richmond's premiership-winning since 2017.

If unable to secure Broad's services, the Eagles may look to the draft to build their squad, with Claremont defender Daniel Curtin among the top prospects for this year's count.

Likely to hold another early selection for this year's National Draft, the Eagles would see the local backman in Curtin as a long-term replacement for McGovern, who turns 31 later this month.

A new deal for Broad would likely see the Swan Districts product see out his career in the yellow and black before handing the baton over to emerging talls Josh Gibcus and Tylar Young.

‘Very, very disappointing’: Tigers flag hero reacts to shock Suns loss

Triple premiership-winning Richmond defender Nathan Broad believes the Tigers were heading in the right direction before Sunday’s shock defeat to Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium.

The 24-point loss to the Suns leaves Richmond with only a round-two victory over Adelaide and a season-opening draw with Carlton from the first seven rounds, and already 2½ wins adrift of the top eight.

The Tigers now face a difficult climb to return to the finals, but Broad pointed to them leading Melbourne by 25 points six days earlier – only to then lose by 18 – as proof they are not far away. But at the same time, he said they needed to “get to work” and quickly rectify what was going wrong.

“Very, very disappointing,” Broad told this masthead of the Gold Coast defeat.

“We thought we went in with a game plan that was good enough, but hats off to Gold Coast – they outplayed us, and they took over 120 uncontested marks, which is just not good enough on our behalf.

“We’re doing a lot right. Last week against Melbourne was a great stepping stone forward, but unfortunately [against the Suns] we went backwards.”

This was not the start to the season Richmond’s brains trust envisioned when they traded for ex-Giants Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, and in what could be the send-off year for club greats Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt.

Taranto is averaging a career-best 31 disposals, 13 contested possessions and six clearances, and would comfortably be leading the Tigers’ best and fairest.

“It’s disappointing we can’t get a few wins on the board for him and ‘Hops’, but they’ve rocked up in great nick, and they’re trying their arses off,” Broad said. “They’re doing really well for us in the midfield, and getting us clearances, and Taranto’s having a great season.”

Broad was playing for the first time since round two after serving a four-match ban for a dangerous tackle that left Adelaide opponent Patrick Parnell concussed.

Barely a week has gone by this season without a player being suspended for a dangerous tackle, under the rough conduct banner, with the AFL desperate to protect the head and make the game safer.

“It’s a tough one. The game’s played at such a frenetic pace. It’s easy if you press pause and slow something down – anything looks bad when you do that,” Broad said.

“Mine was a very bad tackle, but I do feel for some of these players who are getting weeks. It’s so quick and things are going to happen; there’s 360 impact, and not much protective gear.

“When we sign up for this game; we sign up for the consequences, so we know what’s going to happen. I do feel for some of these blokes, but me, on the other hand, I deserved what I got because it was a second-motion tackle.”

Free agent Tiger professes love for club

Richmond premiership defender Nathan Broad admits his impending contract call is the biggest of his career.

The unrestricted free agent turned 30 in April but remains a key member of the Tigers’ backline, which he patrolled during their golden era that delivered flags in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Gold Coast previously tried to lure the West Australian north in 2020 when he was last out of contract, but he re-signed at Richmond. West Coast are the latest club to show interest in Broad, but they are going through a major rebuild, while the Tigers – despite a slow start to the season – are trying to stay competitive.

“I’m not too sure yet,” Broad told Money Talks of his future.

“I’ve spent the last four weeks out of the game [before returning from suspension on Sunday], so getting back in the side was the main thing, then playing consistent football from here on in.

“I love this footy club. I’m 30, which people see as getting old, but I still feel 18 – I feel great. We’re in a bit of a lull, but I know we’ll get our way out of it.

“I love it here and hopefully will sign on, but I’ve just got to play some games now.”

From Jay Clark's HeraldSun article:

Broad is equally important after returning from a dangerous tackle suspension which sidelined him for four matches.

The Tigers have missed him, and the club is working on a contract extension to keep the Western Australian at the club for several more seasons.

Hardwick joked that the club might give Broad’s manager a miss this week after Broad raised his contract price, stopping Cameron.

“While he is really highly-rated in our four walls, he probably doesn’t get the respect outside of that,” Hardwick said.

“The four games he missed, as harsh as it was, were crucial.

“All those players he generally takes were sort of hurting us.

“We are really pleased he is back in the side and understanding how important he is.”

About a contract extension, Hardwick said tongue-in-cheek “He is playing hard ball I suppose”.

“We won’t answer his manager’s calls this week though, he’ll be wanting too much money.”

Broad said he primed himself for the Cameron contest, knowing the superstar forward was one of the best players in the league.

The Tigers’ defender said the plan was to try and keep Cameron as far away from the goals as possible.

“It’s always good to get the good players, I really enjoy that,” Broad said.

“We thought we could let him have the touches up there (in the midfield) and try and soak him up when he comes back through.

“I just tried to get him when I could and let him have his touches up top.

“And try and nullify him (inside 50m), but he can kick goals from 60m, so you have got to be on your game.

“I went into the game really pumped for the challenge.

“I really pride myself on trying to take a dangerous forward each week but I’ve got great help around me – Dylan Grimes, Noah Balta, Nick Vlastuin.

“These blokes put their body on the line to help me out.”

SHREWD TIGER TACTICS PAY OFF... AND SHOW WHAT THEY’VE BEEN MISSING

Max Laughton, Ben Waterworth and David Zita
Foxsports
15 May 2023

The Tigers’ defence was expected to be an issue coming into the season - especially in terms of a lack of depth. And with Robbie Tarrant yet to play a game in 2023, and Nathan Broad playing just his fifth last Friday night, that depth has been exposed.

But what a fifth it was, with Broad limiting Geelong superstar Jeremy Cameron’s impact and helping inspire a major upset over the reigning premiers.

While Cameron had 21 disposals (four inside 50), nine marks and six score involvements, he added just the one goal - while Broad compiled 19 disposals, seven marks, 11 intercepts and five intercept marks.

It was his versatility and footy smarts that allowed him to win the battle, and thus the war, according to Fox Footy’s experts.

“Nathan Broad at the right time would drop off him, he’d go back and help Noah Balta, let Jeremy Cameron get up the ground at stoppage - and it’s a great result,” Garry Lyon said.

Jordan Lewis responded: “You back your system in and you understand what your strengths are. So if you’re Nathan Broad, your strength isn’t in and around the stoppage. You back your midfielders in to try and absorb that pressure from Cameron, force him further up the field.

“And we speak about the way Broad was able to defend - and it’s a lot of the stuff you can’t see, your behind the goal vision. He’s so versatile, so he can play on Cameron one week and then the smaller forward the next week.

“He was huge; he played his position and his opponent perfectly.”

North Melbourne champion David King declared Cameron had looked “impotent” offensively in a way he hadn’t seen before.

“Broad’s match up with Jeremy, he just wasn’t a threat, even in the forward-50,” King told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“I haven’t seen him look so impotent in the forward half of the ground.

“He (Broad) gave him some opportunities 60-70 metres from goal but nothing really close to goal.

“I couldn’t stop watching that battle.

“Damien (Hardwick) touched on it in the post-match he said ‘you know he missed four weeks and you look at the type of player that he plays on, that player’s got us in all those games and they end up being losses’.”

To Hardwick’s point, the Tigers proved unable to stop players like Jacob Van Rooyen (three goals in Q4 for Melbourne in Round 6), Tom Papley (six goals for Sydney in Round 5), Aaron Naughton (three goals for the Bulldogs in Round 4) and Jamie Elliott (two goals in a low-scoring Collingwood win in Round 3).

Given Broad’s versatility he certainly would’ve limited some of those goals - and perhaps swung the results in the process.

He’s going to be vital if Richmond wants to recover from its 1-5-1 start to play finals. Already they’ve won consecutive games, placing them just a win and a half outside of the top eight after Round 9.

They’re still going to need to win nine or 10 of their last 14 matches to play finals, but that’s doable.

Here's the bit about Broad from the full HeraldSun article that WP posted the link to:

---------------------------------------------

Richmond will need to offer Nathan Broad a three-year contract on a salary of up to $500,000 to keep the underrated unrestricted free agent.

The Tigers have been working on other list priorities before considering his contract, with coach Damien Hardwick admitting his brilliant game on Jeremy Cameron had lifted his price tag.

Broad has long taken less to keep the Richmond list together but at a Richmond team that knows Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin will retire this year it might be his time to cash in.

Robbie Tarrant has a degenerative hip issue which means at 34 this is more than likely his last season too.

Richmond plans to start contract talks in round 11 with Broad, who at this stage is keen to stay at the club as he and wife Tayla Damir await the birth of their first child.

But as one of the best unrestricted free agents on the market he now has significant leverage even in a year where he has turned 30.

His manager Colin Young famously pushes a hard bargain for his clients and would be able to secure a three-year deal on more than $500,000 for Broad if he left.

Despite speculation West Coast would be interested in Broad he hasn’t engaged in talks with rival teams.

But if his contract position drifts on rival clubs will come to the party so it will be up to Richmond to get that deal done mid-year.

Free agents in 2023

Jon Ralph
HeraldSun
May 19, 2023

Nathan Broad (Richmond)

There isn’t massive interest yet in Broad because he’s 30 and will sign at the Tigers if they offer a three-year deal on massive money.

But he is an unrestricted free agent, he is durable, he can play tall or small, he has all of the intellectual property from the Richmond premierships and he is just a damned good player.

The evidence? He held Jack Silvagni and Jack Martin goalless in round 2, held Izak Rankine to one goal in round 2, held Jake Waterman goalless in round 8, held Jeremy Cameron goalless.

If the Cats were prepared to give up pick 30 for Shaun Higgins as a 32-year-old someone would be mad not to explore if they could acquire Broad.

His midfield teammate Kamdyn McIntosh is also an unrestricted free agent but is likely to hit a games-based trigger that gives him a contract for 2024.

Broad inks two-year extension

Nathan Broad has committed to Richmond, tying him to the Club until at least the end of 2025.

By Richmond Media - Just now

Richmond's star triple premiership defender Nathan Broad has committed his future to the Club, putting pen to paper on a two-year extension this week.

Broad, who finished 10th in last year's Jack Dyer Medal, has had an excellent start to the 2023 season averaging 17 disposals, 4.9 marks, and 4.2 rebound 50s per game while often nullifying one of the opposition's most damaging forwards.

The now 30-year-old defender arrived at the Club from the strong Western Australian Football League (WAFL) late in 2015 as a mature-aged recruit, having gradually risen the ranks at Swan Districts.

A late-bloomer, Broad played 44 reserves matches (and 20 League) for the Swans between 2011-14 before shooting into National Draft contention in 2015.

Broad featured just twice at senior level in his debut AFL season but was able to earn his place in the fast-charging Tigers team for the final 10 matches of the Club's drought-breaking 2017 premiership campaign.

Broad has continually strengthened his game since then, establishing himself as a senior player across the past six years, featuring in 114 AFL games and adding a further two premierships

The 30-year-old, who was judged best on ground in the eyes of the coaches in the recent Round 9 match against Geelong, showcased his well-rounded offensive and defensive ability, gathering game-high intercepts and one-percenters and 19 disposals while mainly opposed to the Cats’ reigning best and fairest Jeremy Cameron who booted just one goal.

Broad ranks #2 at Richmond for One Percenter’s per match and is #4 for average Rebound 50s, #6 for Bounces and Intercepts, #7 for Marks, and #8 for Kicks.

Richmond General Manager, Football Talent Blair Hartley said having Broad commit to the Club for another two years was exciting.

"Nathan is an important player for us both on and off the field with his versatility, reliability, and energy making us a better team," he added.

"He has worked incredibly hard for everything he has achieved in his time in the AFL, and his drive to get the best out of himself and those around him remains strong.

"This contract is a great reward for Nathan and his family, and equally, we are thrilled to keep him at Richmond."

The contract extension will take Broad into a 9th and 10th season at Richmond, tying him to the Club until the end of 2025.

BROAD’S SURPRISING REVELATION ON HARDWICK’S DEPARTURE

Seb Mottram
SEN
1 June 2023

Richmond defender Nathan Broad was last week a guest on Fox Footy’s On the Couch at the time news broke of Damien Hardwick’s impending exit from Punt Road.

Despite preaching the Tigers’ flag window was still wide open, Broad has now spectacularly admitted he knew of Hardwick’s decision and had to play a “po-ker face” throughout the interview.

The stunning report broken by SEN’s Tom Morris blindsided the footy community with the three-time premiership coach departing Tigerland mid-season.

Reports indicated only a few senior players knew prior to the news being broken and Broad – who signed a fresh contract on Wednesday – revealed he was one.

“If I didn’t sign this two-year contract deal I was thinking about becoming a professional po-ker player,” Broad laughed on SEN’s The Run Home.

“I did know, I found out probably 15 minutes before going live on air. I obviously wasn’t going to spill the beans, it wasn’t my job to do that, it was on Dimma’s time.

“So it was a few porky pies…”

But that doesn’t take away from Broad’s surprise, with the 30-year-old having no suspicions prior to the decision.

“Yeah, obviously I was as shocked as everyone else was, I did not see it coming whatsoever,” he explained.

“There was absolutely no indication from Dimma, even with his body language. Dimma, as we know, all the way up to the very last game and the last day (was invested), so hats off to that, putting on a brave face.

“But the way this business is and the way the world works, you’ve got to move on and move on pretty quickly.

“(Andrew) McQualter’s stepped in and he’s been around for a few years now, an absolute legend, really good game knowledge and game sense and the boys have the utmost respect for him too.

“As harsh as it was, we had to move on and get on to Port Adelaide. We weren’t able to get the chocolates, but it’s been a pretty good week, an exciting week and we’re looking forward to what the future holds.”

Hardwick left Richmond despite his side gathering form in the lead-up to the exit. However, speaking at his final press conference, Hardwick admitted he’d become burnt out by the job and was no longer convinced he could commit as the role requires.

The 50-year-old wasn’t at the MCG as Richmond went down narrowly to Port Adelaide on Sunday, instead posting on Twitter a photo of himself enjoying the game from home.

It was an image that captured Hardwick’s essence in his Richmond kit and famous grin, but there was one aspect Broad wasn’t as enthused by.

“I loved all of it, the only bit I couldn’t have was he and his Stone and Woods, they’re a shocking drink but he loves them!” he laughed.

“It’s good to see him kick back and relax. He’s been an absolute legend for our footy club, the way he brought us back from 2016 and into the granny in 2017, it’s all on the back of him and his leadership and the individual growth he did.

“He owes nothing to us, we owe everything to him. It’s just amazing what he’s done for our footy club and we wish him all the best.”

I’m happy he stayed. He has been very reliable this year. Not many bad games that I can even remember from him.

Define soon mate? I’m being serious and not being a smart arse but everyone has a different view  on this? I look at the list and I don’t see a flag in it. I see other teams with hunger speed who attack the contrast. Something of which I have rarely seen in 2 years now. The quicker we accept it the better.

I’m sure many of us including me said that in 2016, but we had some match winning talent in jack cotch and dusty the great. Which match winners will we have after next year. Lynch will be over 30 and is too injury prone. Shai is a talent but can we rely on him like those 3 for all those years?

We have to cut deals to get into the top 10, and we will have money on the books with cotch and jack gone. It’s the only way IMO because as far as I can see not we can’t rely on our recruiters as they too haven’t plucked many of late.

That 4 week block he missed was very costly, went 0-4. I wonder how many we would have snagged if he had been available.

Broady still underrated despite being a 3-time premiership player.

“He Had A Few Choice Words!” Nathan Broad Reveals What Happened In His Clash With Lance Franklin

Nathan Broad came into the studio to join Abbey Holmes on Footy Talk on Wednesday, fresh off a win against Sydney the previous week.

Where he’d had a little run-in with at half time with Buddy.

The cameras picked up the two having a few things to say to each other as they parted ways – so Broady told us what went down.

“He’s going to flatten me”: Tiger Nathan Broad tells of trading barbs with Lance Franklin

“He had a few choice words for me on the weekend.”

Three-time Richmond premiership defender Nathan Broad has revealed a tongue-in-cheek face-to-face with Sydney Swans champion Lance Franklin.

The defender and forward went toe-to-toe last Thursday night during the Tigers' 13-point comeback victory over the Swans at the MCG, keeping Richmond's finals hopes afloat.

The fixture likely represented Franklin's final MCG appearance in his decorated career.

Speaking with Abbey Holmes on Footy Talk, Broad started full of praise for the Swans icon, noting teammate Tylar Young's awe of playing against 'Buddy'.

"To be able to say you played alongside Lance Franklin and be in his presence is pretty special," Broad said.

"Tylar Young on the weekend came out and said to be able to say that he played on Lance Franklin and that is like, it's amazing. [He's a] real once-in-a-generation player."

Franklin's achievements in the AFL include two flag triumphs at Hawthorn, the seventh-placed mantle on the VFL/AFL all-time goals list, and eight All-Australian blazers.

However, Broad revealed the pair traded a few barbs last Thursday, with Franklin apparently advising Broad on where he should and shouldn't stand on the ground.

"He had a few choice words for me on the weekend," Broad said.

"Oh, we were just getting into each other a bit and it happens every week you know, the heat of the battle and that, and he just let me know if I stand in the wrong spot he's probably going to flatten me."

Love this guy but his last two weeks have been as poor as i have seen from him. He cost us the first two goals by being bullied off the ball. Like Vlastuin improved as the game went but a really poor performance.

Perth WAG Tayla Broad has confirmed why she and husband Nathan Broad — who plays for Melbourne AFL team the Richmond Tigers — will be moving back to Perth.

The Love Island Australia 2018 winner announced in October that the couple — who are currently based in Melbourne — were building a new home in Perth.

The 26-year-old mum took to Instagram stories on Sunday replying to questions asked by fans.

One fan asked: “Will you ever move back to WA?”

“Yes🥰,” Broad wrote over a snap of two glasses of bubbly overlooking Perth city.

Another fan questioned: “Why are you building a house in WA when Nathan plays for Richmond?”

“He won’t play footy forever 😂,” she responded.

The 26-year-old mum took to Instagram stories on Sunday replying to questions asked by fans.

After sharing the news in October to Instagram, Broad wrote being “excited was an understatement”.

The power couple — who share young daughter Samara Margot — said the building plans were in the early days.

It’s not yet confirmed when the pair will move back to WA as Nathan is contracted with Richmond Football Club until 2025.

The former reality star tied the knot with the three-time Richmond AFL Premiership player in October 2022 in the NSW hinterlands.

I doubt it.

But then he's also about to turn 31. Has taken his game to another level post-dynasty and would be one of our best value for pick selections on recent memory.

If he wants to move home for family reasons I wish him good luck. Play Brown down back.

Correct me if I’m wrong- but I thought Nathan knocked back an opportunity to play for West Coast last year.

He seems pretty loyal to me - not surprising when you’ve missed out on a number of drafts and are a late speculative pick .

Mitchell Woodcock

Richmond triple premiership star Nathan Broad says he owes the Tigers to stick through their rebuild after they showed faith in him as a mature-age recruit.

Broad, 30, has played 130 games since being drafted as a 22-year-old with pick No.67 in the 2015 from Swan Districts.
