AFL ROUND 9
FREMANTLE vs RICHMOND
5:40pm WST, Saturday, May 21, 2016 @ Domain Stadium.
The bookies have Freo as narrow favourites.
-
Fremantle are long overdue for a decent game ( a bit like us last week )
Just based on the difference Grimes makes to our team ....plus the inclusion of Cotchin - I think we will win.
-
Heading over to Perth for this one and to catch up with some friends
Not confident but let's see which Richmond turns up

Match preview: Fremantle v Richmond
Alex Malcolm
AFL.com.au
May 17, 2016
SUMMARY
Richmond broke a six-game losing streak last week but the Dockers are yet to break their duck in 2016. The Tigers broke the Dockers' nine-game winning streak at the start of last season at Domain Stadium but were thumped by West Coast in their last trip west in round four. Both teams have got their issues but the Tigers have found some scoring power in the last two weeks against high-quality opposition. The Dockers' midfield must find a way to curb the influence of Brett Deledio and Dustin Martin. Matthew Pavlich returns for the Dockers but he is set to face Alex Rance. Both sides have been struggling with turnovers this season, particularly coming out of defence. The team that uses the ball the best will win.
WHERE AND WHEN: Domain Stadium, Saturday, May 21, 5.40pm AWST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R17, 2015, Fremantle 12.10 (82) d Richmond 10.18 (78) at the MCG
R10, 2015, Richmond 15.7 (97) d Fremantle 10.10 (70) at Domain Stadium
R13, 2014, Fremantle 16.9 (105) d Richmond 12.13 (85) at the MCG
R17, 2013, Richmond 12.12 (84) d Fremantle 8.9 (57) at the MCG
R5, 2013, Fremantle 12.9 (81) d Richmond 12.8 (80) at Domain Stadium
THE SIX POINTS
1. It was a thriller between these sides the last time they met. David Mundy kicked the winning goal for the Dockers with less than a minute remaining. Mundy was best on ground with 28 disposals and one goal.
2. Richmond has improved its form in the last two weeks. In the first six weeks the Tigers kicked an average score of 80. In the last two games they have averaged 95 points.
3. Both sides don't collect a lot of uncontested disposals. The Tigers are ranked 15th for uncontested possessions, just ahead of Fremantle in 16th.
4. The teams have played 15 times at Domain Stadium with nine wins to six in the Dockers' favour. Fremantle has won three of the last four.
5. The Dockers haven't lost nine consecutive games in a season since the middle of 2009. Including last season's preliminary final they have now lost 10 in a row.
6. Richmond star Alex Rance is the highest-ranked key defender in the Schick AFL Player Ratings. Rance is ranked 31st overall. The Dockers' highest-ranked key defender is injured veteran Michael Johnson at 255.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Cam Sutcliffe.
His kicking coming out of defence has let him down so far this season. His disposal efficiency was just 56 per cent in Launceston. He needs to lift his efficiency this week if the Dockers are to trouble Richmond.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 10 points

The story against Richmond
fremantlefc.com.au
May 21, 2016
Freo will look to halt Richmond's newfound momentum.
Every story is made up of the basic elements, the Who, What, When, Where and Why.
The outcome of a football game is no different, and here are some of the key factors that could dictate how the story unfolds in Fremantle’s clash with Richmond on Saturday.
...
What – The little details
While key stats such as inside 50s, clearances and kicking efficiency often hold their weight in regards to their importance in dictating a result, sometimes it’s the smaller things that can greatly impact a game.
The most minute of the little details, the often championed “one-percenters” can be the difference in key plays and it’s an advantage Fremantle hold over Richmond so far in 2016. Freo rank 9th in the AFL with 47.3 per game while Richmond are 17th, averaging 40.4. While this may seem insignificant, these actions can be impactful, such as a turnover for a score that could have been avoided if a shepherd was applied to alleviate pressure on the player kicking the ball. It may seem small, but as the old adage goes, “Greatness from small beginnings”.
When – First response
Richmond have been impressive so far in terms of getting on the scoreboard quickly, having scored the first goal of the game in six of their eight contests. Despite their fast starts, Richmond haven’t been able to capitalise on their initial momentum, having gone on to trail at quarter time in all but one of their games so far in 2016. Whoever can take the upper hand in the first quarter could go a long way in securing the win as neither Freo or Richmond have been able to consistently perform to start the game, with both averaging only 2.5 goals in the first term.
Where – Defensive 50
Freo’s defenders will have to be on their toes against an efficient Richmond forward line on Saturday night. The Tigers are currently sit fourth in the AFL with marks inside 50, averaging 13.3 per game. This is helped by their bevy of tall targets such as Riewoldt, Griffiths and Vickery as well as their big bodied midfielders and solid marking small forwards.
What’s more impressive about their forward 50 marking ability is that they’ve done this despite ranking 16th in the league for inside 50s (47 per game).
Simply put, the Tigers have the forward talent to make the most of their opportunities, so it will be crucial for Freo’s defenders to answer the challenge.
Why – Budding rivalry, halting momentum
In addition to the four points that all AFL teams strive for, this game has some extra feeling to it due to the dramatic circumstances of last year’s two contests between Fremantle and Richmond.
In round 10 last year, the Tigers brought Freo’s undefeated start to the year to a halt with a 27-point win at Domain Stadium, but seven weeks later Freo travelled to the MCG and defeated the Tigers by four-points off thanks to a late game goal to David Mundy.

throw away all strategy and form - toss of a coin in these conditions - the bigger endeavour will win, simples

9 possessions later and its back to a warm bed and another pay check. Weve been 'Cotched' again.

Good weather for players to stand up in these conditions. Hard in and under.. :thumbsup

No changes

I wonder if the bad weather has made Vickery even more tired than usual

Deservedly so, the lead.
Why ain't you at the game seen its played in your state
-
Couple of nice tackles laid by Ellis :gobdrop
-
Took us 25 mins to work out it's not last week and you don't short chip and continually handball in the wet :scream. Our set-shot kicking is still an issue aside from Jack's great kick. On the positive side, our hardness at the footy and effort is good and we did finally get some reward in the last minute with two goals.
-
Hahahaha! About time we got one of these rushed behinds given to us for a change. Thanks ump :snidegrin.
-
:bow :bow :bow :bow umpire great decision..... :clapping :clapping :clapping :clapping

If Brian Taylor could stop calling Menadue 'Grimes' and Morris 'Hunt', that would be great.
Also got Freos captain wrong at the start of the game.

who kicked the last goal l was watching my greyhound ;D

Well done Miles

BT is the worst at getting names right ::)
Also lads, remember this gem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ElLRSVxph0
-
Tell you what, Batchelor has been really good so far
-
Love it that is desperate stuff to get a player. Menadue though stopped & we should have had a goal
-
:clapping :clapping
-
Say what you want about Ellis, but he is a decent tackler. Too bad he doesn't want to do it and is more than happy to stop chasing and point if given the chance
-
Will be our turn to be under siege in the third against that breeze.
-
Half-time
Richmond 2.3 6.10-46

Inside 50s: 24 - 18 ( marks: 6 - 2)
Tackles: 41 - 49
Hitouts: 27 - 25
Interchanges: 40 - 43
Helped by the weather, Richmond has restricted Fremantle to its lowest half time score at Subiaco since 2011. The Tigers have done most damage from its forward half, kicking all but two of its scores from possession chains originating in this zone.

-
Will be our turn to be under siege in the third against that breeze.
Did alright in the first :shh
-
Happy to be 5 goals up but we stuffed up a couple of chances to be further in front with that breeze and our dominance that quarter. Freo also won a couple of centre clearances too easily despite us having first hands on the footy.
Will be our turn to be under siege in the third against that breeze.
Breeze has dropped according to Richo. Let's hope he's right :pray. AFL Live said the ball was in our forward half 80% of time in the last 10 minutes, so that's how strong the breeze was. You could easily make the distance from outside 50. A 5 goal margin isn't much if Freo get a similar advantage in the 3rd.
-
Freo also won a couple of centre clearances too easily despite us having first hands on the footy.
Vlastuin should at least be in the guts at the centre bounces.
-
Say what you want about Ellis, but he is a decent tackler. Too bad he doesn't want to do it and is more than happy to stop chasing and point if given the chance
His a dick Bellis. His a good tackler if you been watching him in past games he tackles players who don't even have the ball :snidegrin As l said he has talent & is a good footballer but is lacking. Tonight his playing better
-
Got to knock that Ballantyne out :banghead
-
Menadue must be dropped his not smart
-
l like to see more of what Vickery just gave out. l want to see him snap & give out what he gets
-
That is why l named Zac Dirty Dawson at the start of the night cause his a filthy player. Welldone Vickery & all the players come in
-
That is why l named Zac Dirty Dawson at the start of the night cause his a filthy player. Welldone Vickery & all the players come in
Hope he enjoys his enforced holiday for his dirty cheap shot.
Makes up for Vickery's brainfade and gifted us a steadying goal against the breeze.
-
3/4 time
Richmond 2.3 6.10 9.10-64
Fremantle 1.1 2.3 5.7-37
Goals: Miles 2, Riewoldt 2, Griffiths, Grigg, Edwards, Lloyd, Morris.
-
Ty is just so disappointing :-\
-
Need to use the wind and attack for the whole quarter, worst thing from here would be to go defensive which for some reason Hardwick seems to favour when we lead games going into the last, surely not in these conditions.
-
Trent Cotchin leads all-comers with 29 disposals with five of these involved in scoring chains. The Richmond captain has won an equal game-high eight intercepts as well as four clearances, and has delivered the ball inside 50 on five occasions.
Q3 23:24
Fremantle has locked the ball in its forward half for 68 per cent of this quarter, recording 13 inside 50s to just five of Richmond. However the Dockers have kicked just 2.4 (16) from eight shots, while the Tigers have kicked 3.0 (18) from four shots.
Richmond has now taken ten intercept marks in its defensive half while Fremantle has only taken one such mark in that zone.
http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2016/9/fre-v-rich
Despite dumb footy and Freo getting too easy centre clearances at times, we did well that quarter to hold onto a 27 point lead. Now we'll have the breeze in the last (touchwood it doesn't die down).
-
Titch outside from 50 on the boundary :clapping :gotigers
-
Ju.p on Richmond +54pts paying $3
-
Out of the cente and it's a Lids free. Misses the easy one :P.
72 - 37
-
Flossy marks the kick-in but his kick at goal is up and under too much and it's rushed through.
73 - 37
-
Jack holding his wrist .... :help
Edit: He's now waving his arms for the pass so he's okay hopefully :pray.
And that's another missed shot to us :banghead.
Lids has a long ping and it's OOTF :scream.
74 - 37
-
Never been a small forward myself but can someone explain to me when long kicks with the wind come inside 50 we dont have anyone out the back.
-
Lower your eyes Dusty. Titch was wide open.
And then another miss to Ellis.
:scream
77 - 38
-
Tigers have much more time but continue to just bomb it in
-
Never been a small forward myself but can someone explain to me when long kicks with the wind come inside 50 we dont have anyone out the back.
Poor positioning (not front and square and on the move) and not quick enough to burn off everyone past the pack. Rioli would have had a field day tonight over the back.
We finally get a goal via Menadue.
Rich 11.17-83
Freo 5.8-38
-
Grigg has played well tonight & put tackles on & body on the line so many times :clapping
-
Morris you can't dispute his gone in 100% & played very well :clapping Oh poo his knocked out as l type this :(
-
Junk time ... and I mean junk. 45 pts up with the breeze and we're trying to maintain possession in the back half :huh3
Morris k.o in a head clash.
-
Grigg has played well tonight & put tackles on & body on the line so many times :clapping
The conditions suit him. High contested in-close game with quick kicks forward.
-
We win!
Final Score
Richmond 2.3 6.10 9.10 11.17-83
Fremantle 1.1 2.3 5.7 6.9-45
Goals: Miles 2, Riewoldt 2, Edwards 2, Griffiths, Grigg, Lloyd, Morris, Menadue.
-
Batch was really solid. Liked his game
-
Morris ok
Great win Tigers & us supporters can enjoy another great week. Bring on the the Boonga game ;D :gotigers
-
Junk time ... and I mean junk. 45 pts up with the breeze and we're trying to maintain possession in the back half :huh3
pretty pee poor effort that - we have so much percentage to try and make up and we lairise like we're 150 in front instead of putting a poor opponent to the sword with a 6 goal breeze at our back.
-
Still dont underatand how we start playing keepings off when in this instance we are 45pts up with 7 mins to play. Hawks, Cats etc would have kept attacking and won by 70+. We didnt even do it that well, couple of turnovers led to Freo goals. Just baffling to me, guess its Hardwick brainwashing again.
-
Batch was really solid. Liked his game
l thought they all played well tonight. You can excuse the big men in these conditions. l'm surprised we went into the game so tall. The umpires still amaze me with some decisions
:gotigers
-
Played well. Cotch was a standout. One of those wins that I struggle to get excited about.
-
How much better does dusty look playing as an inner mid? how much better do we look with him there. Wouldve liked to see Vlaustuin play in the guts more, hope he doesnt get shunted down back full time again
-
Grigg has played well tonight & put tackles on & body on the line so many times :clapping
The conditions suit him. High contested in-close game with quick kicks forward.
Yep, crap conditions like tonight's often suit the spuds as they bring everyone back to the field.
-
Who was on L Neald?

Grigg has played well tonight & put tackles on & body on the line so many times :clapping
The conditions suit him. High contested in-close game with quick kicks forward.
Yep, crap conditions like tonight's often suit the spuds as they bring everyone back to the field.
some players are just standout wet weather performers while others who kill it on a warm dry day struggle & vice versa. Lennon loves the wet also.
-
For me it was all about rspect. Cotchin proved he is a champion - deswrved of his brownlow, a dogged game. I know freo arnt much, but they're the best bottom team for a long time. Got the points, we move on to next week. Great game tigers!
