TWO TIGER YOUNG GUNS RE-SIGN
richmondfc.com.au  June 1, 2016 10:35 AM

Richmond has extended the contracts of two young players, defender Nick Vlastuin and midfielder Corey Ellis.

Vlastuin signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the Tigers until at least the end of 2019.

The 22-year-old former Vic Metro captain was selected by Richmond with pick No.9 in the 2012 AFL National Draft.

The tough defender has played 69 AFL games and finished equal-sixth in the Club’s best and fairest last year.

Ellis, 19, will remain a Tiger until at least the end of 2018 after putting pen to paper on a new two-year deal.

Richmond used its first selection, pick No.12 overall, to secure Ellis in the 2014 AFL National Draft.

The left-footer has played nine senior games this season and continues to impress with his strong work ethic.

Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Dan Richardson, said Vlastuin and Ellis were important players for the future of the Club.

“We’re really pleased with the ongoing development of both Nick and Corey,” he said.

“Both players are working really hard with the coaches on and off the track to take their game to the next level, and we’re excited by what they bring to the team.

“It’s been great to see Nick spend some time in the midfield recently and for a second-year player, Corey has been very composed and consistent in the backline this season.”

“It has been pretty straightforward the whole time.  There was no doubt that I was going to sign again . . . (I’m) really excited,” Corey Ellis said on ‘Sportsday’.

“I’m loving the Club, I’m enjoying all the boys and, now that we’re winning a few games, the Club’s a lot happier and it’s a great place to be.”

“I’m absolutely loving it . . . There are challenges, and it’s a tough game at times.  But all the boys are great, and they pretty much make it as easy as it can be,” he said.

The 19-year-old provided an insight into Richmond’s capacity to stay composed in the face of a trying six-game losing streak early this season.

“We’ve got a lot of cool, calm heads around the Club, and that starts with the captain and the leadership group,” he said.

“Despite how we’ve started seasons, they’ve been pretty much leading the way, through thick and thin and been really good at it.

“I think that’s one of the reasons why we tend to come back and keep fighting in games and starting to win some.”

“We love our fans . . . they stick with us through thick and thin,” he said.

“They’re always showing up to games and we really appreciate their support.”
