Match preview: Greater Western Sydney v Richmond

SUMMARY

Last week’s win over Port Adelaide was Greater Western Sydney's 12th for the year, a new record for the club, and they'll be keen to repeat the dose against Richmond, a team they’ve never beaten. The Giants sit in second spot on the ladder, one of six teams on 12 wins for the season, so they will be well aware of the importance surrounding this clash in Canberra. The Tigers showed some good signs against Hawthorn last week but fell away badly after half-time, so coach Damien Hardwick will want a strong showing on Saturday afternoon. It's Richmond’s first visit to the nation's capital and if the Giants maintain the intensity they showed in the second half against the Power, the Tigers will have a tough flight home.

WHERE AND WHEN: Manuka Oval, Saturday, July 30, 1.45pm AEST

LAST FIVE MEETINGS
R14, 2015, Richmond 10.18 (78) d Greater Western Sydney 10.9 (69) at the MCG
R19, 2014, Richmond 13.11 (89) d Greater Western Sydney 8.14 (62) at the MCG
R10, 2014, Richmond 24.10 (154) d Greater Western Sydney 5.11 (41) at Spotless Stadium
R22, 2013, Richmond 25.13 (163) d Greater Western Sydney 6.6 (42) at Spotless Stadium
R12, 2012, Richmond 11.20 (86) d Greater Western Sydney 12.2 (74) at Spotless Stadium

THE SIX POINTS

1. When these two sides last played the Giants led by five points at half-time and 15 at three-quarter time, before the Tigers overran them. Trent Cotchin was the difference with 33 disposals, two goals and seven tackles.

2. No team has kicked the football more this season than GWS, who are averaging 222.2 per game; the Tigers are sixth at 207.1 per game.

3. The Giants and the Tigers have met five times and Richmond has won all of them, with two of the victories coming by more than 100 points.

4. GWS is the number one clearance side after 17 games averaging 41 per game, while Richmond has struggled in this area, ranked 11th at 36.2 per game.

5. The Giants have overtaken Adelaide as the highest scoring side in 2016, kicking 109 points per game; the Tigers are a long way back with 84 points per game.

6. Richmond midfielder Dustin Martin has continued his rise up the Schick Official Player Ratings, he’s now ranked 26th after being 54th in the competition after round five.

IT’S A BIG WEEK FOR… Jack Riewoldt
The star Tiger had a quiet afternoon against the Hawks last week and needs to respond if his side is any chance of causing an upset. The small ground in Canberra will make it hard for Riewoldt to find space against a Giants' defence in top form, and if the Tigers can't generate more than the 37 inside 50s they had against Hawthorn, they're in trouble.

PREDICTION: Greater Western Sydney by 57 points

Sight seeing in Canberra... You will be better off going to the game, I will summarize for you, roundabouts, a fake lake with ducks, coldness, and lots of government buildings.  Endless boredom and a sense of despair.  The best thing about Canberra is the view of it in your rear view mirror as you drive out of the joint.

Modern footy = Transition.

We are as slow as slugs at it. Add the fact if you put a grain of salt on us we disintegrate.

Most other clubs are quick at it.

Hence we are easy to pick off.

Giants 27-0 up.

Time to get a coffee and play my superdraw tattslotto ticket for tonight.

Thanks RFC and Dimma.

3-0-75

3 finals
0 finals win
75 mistakes a quarter.

How is this match fixing? You think even if they tried they'd win? They are executing Dumma's perfect game plan superbly as far as I can see, we still haven't tackled but we are already the worst tackling team in the comp. We don't go straight through the middle because Dumma likes to go crab like and retain possession. We don't deliver direct into the forward 50 because we love the pockets.

What have you see that is any different to what it's always been since Dumma has coached us. Too soft? Where have you been?

I would say we have to shake some of that talent free from GWS but we just don't have anything to offer, nothing has changed from when we started.  Nothing to trade except a few players you can count on one hand, and trading them would be like trading a major organ away, pointless.

You know what in my days of playing football. If you had a opponent coming forward & you didn't run at him to apply pressure. The coach would grab you by the scruff of the jumper & biff you. All l see is defenders running back allowing the attacking player to continue gaining ground forward & plenty of time to think what he wants to do.

Who the stuff teaches that poo

Once again it's the supporters that can only hold their heads up high. A record crowd for an AFL game in Canberra.

Riewoldt champion Full forward what was that
Lockett, Dunstall and Hudson would get frustrated with the slow backwards, sideways and wide way we play. Anything but move the ball quickly and directly long forward. It also makes a huge difference that we are getting smashed in the centre clearances this year. We are usually starting any forward movement from our defence under pressure with the opposition in front of us pressing.

Don't get to see many Tigers games live but went along to Manuka today and what you do see is alot of what goes on behind the play which is missed when watching on the TV. What it shows me is we have alot of lazy players who make minimal effort to receive the ball and no effort whatsoever to cover their immediate opposition player. The other thing i noticed was how much pointing and positioning of each other they seem to do and that alone makes me think most of the team has no clue what they are doing and where they should be positioned at any point during the game. To me there is no gameplan that is natural to the players, its very stilted and you can almost hear them thinking about whether they are in the right position or where they should go with the next kick or handball when in possession. Quite frankly the way we play is the most boring, defensive style of the game i think i have ever had the displeasure of having to watch.

Then we get to the individual skill levels of our players, sorry but in that team i don't think i can name one player that more often than not executes their skill, Rance maybe. Short passes going over heads, dropping short, and even the most basic of skills which is handballing to a teammate on the move we cannot execute, either looped too high or too low or behind them. GWS were so far beyond our skill level today it was like our side were being introduced to the game for the very first time.

Its sad to think that these players are the same players that Hardwick believed or still believes for that matter are the best group of players he has had at his disposal since he started coaching the side. If that's true then we must have been the worst side in history before he got here because from what i saw today i would not be proud to say i coached that team, and  i use the term "team" extremely loosely because they do not play as a team. About the only thing they do as a team that i could see was as they trudged off at the end of each quarter they are really good at congratulating each other on another poor effort.

Finally after reading quite alot of views on B Ellis i decided to focus on him today and I must say i haven't seen a more ineffectual player for a long time. Again he seems to be telling everyone else where they should be but all he seems to do is jog up and down the wing and never really looks to take possession of the ball. Not sure he even really understands the basics of the game, when he did finally get possessions they was so rushed that each time they were either skied kicks or poorly executed ones resulting in turnovers. I really think he needs to be moved on, yes he is young but he is just not showing anything at the moment and is yet another passenger on the list although we had extra large numbers of them today.

GWS really are Frankensteins monster. They will win a premiership,  if not this year maybe next. Leon Cameron has the best gig in football.

They remind me of the Eagles juggernaut circa 1991 .

Forget the possibility of an all WA or SA grand final .....we could see an all NSW Grand Final. Imagine that !!!!!

True. They were given way too much. The only problem is that all the teams agreed to it so they have nobody to blame but themselves.

Performances like this have the stench of a coach that's lost the players.

I wonder how different it would be if this was the last year of Dimmas contract? Years over, coach is safe, favourites feel safe because they're still getting a game. Why would you even wanna try? Time to pack it in and try again next year, everyones still going to be there anyway.

Now if his contract wasn't extended early this year. Players may (or may not) want to prove something for the coach, may need to show something because who knows if they'll get a game under the new coach. Hell, we may have already at an interum coach by now where the players had to prove something.

Stability, it promotes mediocrity
