Naish training with Tigers

An exciting father-son prospect is one of two AFL Academy level two participants training at Richmond for the next two weeks.

Northern Knights outside midfielder Patrick Naish, the son of former Tiger Chris, and Bendigo Pioneer Kane Farrell will be put through their paces at Punt Road Oval as they gain an insight into the AFL environment.

The AFL Academy two squad includes the best 35 under-18 players in the country, who are eligible to be drafted in 2017.

Highly-skilled, speedy, outside midfielder Patrick Naish is the son of Chris Naish, who played 143 games with the Tigers from 1990-97.

Farrell is a midfielder/rebounding defender, who hails from Castlemaine.

RICHMOND will get a closer look at father-son prospect Patrick Naish this month as he completes a two-week training block at the club as part of the NAB AFL Academy program.

The 17-year-old midfielder, whose father Chris played 143 games for the Tigers in the 1990s before two seasons at Port Adelaide, is eligible to join Richmond at next year's draft.

He will spend this week and next week training at the Tigers' Punt Road headquarters for the 'club placement' period of the national Academy's program.

Like father, like Tiger, Patrick Naish hopes to kick on

Andrew Tate

In the 1990s Richmond had two of football's most successful father-son picks in Matthew Richardson and Joel Bowden. But unlike Geelong's riches won with Ablett, Scarlet and Hawkins, the Tiger pair were destined to endure a premiership drought that has now dragged into its 37th year.

Patrick Naish, son of former durable forward Chris, is 18 and on the verge of being Richmond's first father-son selection since 2003 when Thomas Roach – son of Michael – was selected and played 11 games.

Naish knows all about the dreams and the pitfalls of the yellow and black horde.

"Everyone loves them when they are winning," he laughs during a break in his Year 12 studies and training for this week's AFL Academy commitments.

The Northern Knight half-back has spent the past two years in the Tiger training fold and the experience has prepared him for life at Tigerland should his name be called.

"I'm loving it. Just being around professionals pretty much 24-7," he said. "I have loved the experience so far. They have been unreal the past couple of years I've been there they have been unreal in my development ... but yeah, a lot of young faces all enjoying themselves pretty much.

"Because I've been there for two years now I've got to know everyone on more of a personal level, which has been unreal. But early on it was blokes like Brandon Ellis, Nick Vlastin, which has been unreal as well. Just teaching me little things. And then in the midfield group, Cotchie and Dusty and Caddy have been unreal ... helping me and giving me little tips here and there."

Naish's father Chris played 143 games and kicked 21 goals for the Tigers between 1990 and 1997, including an unbroken run of games for three years up until the end of 1996. He finished his career with 18 games at Port Adelaide before starting a career in sports management.

Naish senior is now chief executive of the Reach Foundation after some years with the AFL Sportsready program. His background in youth development has stood his son in good stead.

"He's been unreal," Naish says of his father. "He's helped me with footy as well, but probably becoming a person as well outside of footy. I think personally the better person you are the better you will fit into a footy club. He's probably helped me with that a lot more, as well as footy obviously ... at the moment I'm at school just trying to get through that, trying to do the best that I can.

"It's over the air to be talked about obviously as a potential Richmond father-son, but I think there is still a fair bit to go, I've still got another full season ahead of me to get a kick. So hopefully I do play well in the games and then we can talk about that, but until I get there I still have a lot of hard work to go."

Naish's talents in various positions are clearly rated by the Tigers. AFL Academy coach Brenton Sanderson said on an AFL.com.au podcast that Naish was, "a very good decision-maker and exceptional kick ... a perfect set-up kick across half-back". He added: "I really like him. I think he's going to be a very good AFL talent."

Naish is clearly a student of the game, saying he has not based his own football on any one player, but how individuals play their roles on the field.

"I like to watch games, so if I go to a Richmond game I will just watch their half-back and watch their running patterns," he said. "I pick out a position on each team that I watch. I change players each week pretty much. But I watch more of their positioning and what they do, the different players that play in the roles that I play.

"I feel like I play a lot of roles on the ground, but I enjoy playing half-back and wing the most ... seeing the ground, seeing the play in front of me and making decisions from there."

And where does he need to improve to ensure his selection?

"Probably my inside, contested game, that has gone up a little but I think can still lift a little bit more. And just to continue to work on my strengths, like my kicking and my running. Just continue to work on them to make them more elite."

Naish's pre-season trip to the United States with the Academy players was also an eye-opener as he trained with elite athletes at a Los Angeles college.

"It was similar to Australia in that they are all passionate about their sport," he said of the athletes in the US. "The training facilities over there, especially the first week going to the academy was unreal ... an unbelievable experience. It was bloody tough as well, but I loved every bit of it.

"Playing AFL has been something I have wanted to do since I was born, so I am going to do everything I can to do it and whatever comes along I am hopefully going to use to my advantage. It is something I have wanted to do my whole life – I'd do anything for it."

Naish is also determined to keep the fun in his football, even as the Tigers' notoriously demanding fans start counting their early-season blessings.

"[My goal is] obviously getting drafted to any club, but especially Richmond as I've barracking for them my whole life. I loved going to their games as a kid  ... I think just loving it as a kid, because Dad played it as well and he passed it on in a way.

"I just loved going for kicks with Dad. As a kid I went to all of his – because he coached Scotch originally – I'd go there every week and just watch it 24-7. I just loved it.

"And even still it's sort of a release for me just to take my mind off everything else and know that footy is always there that I can just play it and do what I love. And if I do get the opportunity to do that as a career that would be the best, that would be a dream come true."

Patrick Naish father-son: Richmond yet to tell star midfielder if they’ll pick him in AFL national draft

SAM LANDSBERGER,
Herald Sun
5 October 2017

RICHMOND has not told Patrick Naish whether it will grant his draft dream and secure the outside midfielder as the club’s first father-son selection in 14 years.

Naish welled up in the MCG stands when Dustin Martin kicked the last goal of Saturday’s Grand Final and copped two memorable fend-offs from Martin during a tackling drill last pre-season.

Only three clubs booked interviews with Naish at this week’s draft combine. On Wednesday he met with Fremantle, Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs.

St Kilda, Collingwood and West Coast, as well as the Lions and Dogs, have previously paid house visits.

Naish, 18, grew up idolising Brett Deledio and has studied the AFL’s complicated draft bidding system.

His two younger brothers — Xavier, 16, and Charlie, 12 — are also hopeful of playing for Richmond.

“I’m not going to lie — I’d love to go to Richmond,” Naish said.

“But at the same time I see myself as a professional bloke and a loyal person, so I’d take any opportunity with both hands. They’ve (Richmond) kept their cards close to their chest.”

The Dogs hold the No.9 pick and are a chance to bid for Naish before Richmond’s pair of first-round selections — 15 and 17.

The Tigers would almost certainly match that bid and take Naish, who would add a lick of class to their pressure and grunt.

Naish collected 21 disposals in the curtain-raiser to Saturday’s Grand Final and then informally spoke to Tigers recruiter Matt Clark and list boss Blair Hartley.

“When Dusty kicked that goal and grabbed his jumper I was like, ‘Oh s--t, I’m going to cry now’,” Naish said.

“Growing up me and dad went to most games, and I still try to get to most of the home games.”

Chris Naish played 143 games for Richmond from 1990-1997 and pores over his son’s vision with him.

Naish owns a raking right foot and kicked 10.3 in his 100th game of junior football.

He won two best-and-fairests at Ivanhoe and this year averaged 21.8 disposals and five score involvements for Vic Metro.

Naish has been invited to train with Richmond during the past two summers. He was placed in the backline and shadowed Brandon Ellis around the club.

“This year was the big one,” he said.

“Because it was before my (last junior season) I took away the factor that these guys are my heroes, because I wanted to get down to business and have a red-hot crack.”

Father-son prospect hoping for more Tiger joy

afl.com.au
5 October 2017

PATRICK Naish was cheering as loud as any Richmond supporter at the MCG last Saturday as the success-starved club broke a 37-year flag-drought with a 48-point Grand Final win over Adelaide.

As of next season, there is the very real prospect the young midfielder, and passionate Tigers supporter, could be training and playing with his premiership heroes as Richmond contemplates selecting the son of former forward Chris as a father-son draftee in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

However, the 18-year-old is quick to reaffirm he was not one of the hordes of Tigers supporters to descend on Swan St after the game.

After all he had more important things on this week, like showing clubs what he can do at this week's NAB AFL Draft Combine.

"At the start (once the Tigers had won) I was more in shock and couldn't believe what had happened," Naish told AFL.com.au.

"It was unreal."

Naish has supported the Tigers his whole life and has a strong desire to join the club if it is prepared to take him as a father-son selection.

However, the Northern Knights prospect is also "keeping his options open" and understands the process of the academy/father-son bidding system can be a complex one.

Richmond has selections No.15 and No.17 in the first round of this year's draft and it is highly likely the Tigers will have to select him with one of those picks even if another club does not lodge a bid for Naish.

The son of former Tiger Chris Naish, who played 143 games with the Tigers between 1990-97 (before 18 games with Port Adelaide), has become a regular face at the Tigers this year.

Naish had the opportunity to train with the Tigers on a full-time basis in December last year as part of the NAB AFL Academy's program. He's also spent time there periodically (whether that be weights training or looking at video edits of his TAC Cup performances with Richmond assistant Andrew McQualter) over the last few years.

"It's been really good to get an insight into where the club's heading and on a personal level to get an understanding of the intensity the players train at and how they go about their lives 24/7," Naish said.

"That's something I want the opportunity to do next year so I've just got to keep continuing to work up to that level."

Naish believes the bonds he has already formed with the players and coaches at the club will help him make the transition to being a professional athlete, should he end up at Richmond.

Captain Trent Cotchin took him out for lunch on his birthday in January and he worked closely with Alex Rance, Dylan Grimes and Brandon Ellis on the defensive aspects of his game.

"They just brought me in straight away. They were open for me to see them whenever I wanted and I could have chats with them about footy or life and I felt like helped me a lot," Naish said.

Naish averaged 21.8 disposals (ranked 12th in the competition) for Vic Metro during this year's Under-18 Championships and was named as an All Australian after a standout carnival, where he thrived in the midfield and also off half-back.

He also averaged 13 kicks from his four games, ranked second out of all the players to appear in the Championships, and as a creative onballer he thrives when taking the game on and tucking the footy under his arm.

Despite the strong form he produced throughout the year for Vic Metro, the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup and for Ivanhoe Grammar at school level, Naish remains in the dark about Richmond's plans for him in the upcoming draft.

"Nothing's set in stone and they haven't given much away," Naish said.

"They were obviously focused on winning the 'Granny' which is fair enough but they haven't given me an indication of where I sit either way at this stage."

Naish credits father Chris for helping him get to this point of his career, but he also joked his Dad enjoyed pulling out his own highlight tapes from his Richmond days far too often.

Chris Naish also played 18 games for Port Adelaide between 1998 and 1999, with Patrick, who was born in 1999, being told he was in attendance for at least one of his father's games – although, of course, he can't remember it.

"On-field he gives me little pointers on what I need to do to improve and off-field it's just with organisation and having that mental strength to go throughout what has been a long year.

"I owe a lot to him."

Could Richmond pass up father-son prospect Patrick Naish if draft price too high?

Richmond Patrick Naish father-son draft pick: What pick will Richmond have to give up for Patrick Naish?

Jon Ralph,
Herald Sun
16 October 2017

RICHMOND is indicating it is prepared to pass on Patrick Naish if made to pay too high a price for the talented father-son.

But AFL clubs believe the Tigers are likely to take half back and midfielder Naish with one of their two first-round picks which fall at 15 and 16.

AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan said the brilliant ball user still had a massive upside after his breakout year in the TAC Cup.

Likely to be used as a long-kicking wingman and small forward until he grows into his frame, the 18-year-old is the son of 143-game Tigers forward Chris Naish.

Unlike some of the big-bodied midfielders in the draft he might take time to play senior footy.

But Sheehan says he has a raking kick, innate goal sense and a strong mark for his size after averaging 22 possessions and 89 rankings points for Vic Metro.

The Tigers have been aggressive bidders on a trio of academy players in recent years under the draft bidding system.

They missed out on all of Academy-linked players Jacob Hopper, Matthew Kennedy and Eric Hipwood, but are adamant they genuinely wanted those players.

The bidding system before the national draft allows clubs to lodge bids for players, with their affiliated clubs needing to take them with the next pick if they want them.

The industry expects given Naish’s talent a club will make a bid around the Tigers’ early picks to ensure he doesn’t fall through to the second round.

“The feeling is there might be some payback,” one recruiting source said.

But Sheehan said the Tigers could not lose with Naish given the way he kept rising to another level in his final TAC Cup year.

“He is a light-bodied kid but he has come on enormously. Last year he was just a hopeful but he improved out of sight,” he said yesterday.

“He had a brilliant year at the nationals and was dominant at Ivanhoe Grammar. He also went forward and kicked goals.

“He is more outside than inside now but he could easily play a small forward or wing role.

“He played on a wing in the nationals and was fantastic. He cuts back inside well, has a lovely step and acceleration.

Richmond does not have a second-round pick — its next picks are 50 and 52 — so it would have to make up points if it matched a club’s bid in the 20s.

“He uses the ball well, has an innate sense for goal and when he has one step to kick goals over his shoulder he still does,’’ Sheehan said.

“He is exciting to watch, a terrific kid and likeable in groups, so he’s a really exciting young player.”

All clubs scrutinised Jackson Edwards, the son of Adelaide great Tyson, at Saturday’s state screening.

He is seen to be in contention for a later pick, with Adelaide last year rookie-listing Ben Jarman, the son of Crows premiership hero Darren Jarman.

We have got to trade into second round or do a deal for 17 with 2 picks in early twenties or package Miles or Lolyd .Shifter makes him sound like a gun and has excellent kicking skills wasn't that the knock on him

The knock on him is that currently he's as soft as Jordan McMahon.

Great kid but will take 3 or 4 years to build the confidence and body to play seniors.

IIRC, chris Naish was our highest paid player at one stage, when maxfield went to sydney we paid overs to keep Naish as We thought he would go to Sydney as well, as it turned out there as some AFL rule which prevented 2 players moving from one club to another..or am i living in a fantasy world??

If Patrick is going to take 3-4 years to develop where he can get injured, suffer menral issues etc it is a pass for mine.

From his highlights, this kid is a very good kick and a good decision maker.

Definitely worth a punt, but I'd reckon he will fall into the second round as he still needs to physically mature a bit to be AFL ready, and most clubs will want a quicker return on a higher pick.

So would like to see us get a deal done for a second round pick.

Chris Naish on SEN earlier today:

* Patrick has done an apprenticeship at Richmond (via AIS). Already has a connection with the players. Choco was good for him. Helped him with info for this year.

* Played with Ivanhoe, Northern Knights and Vic Metro. Had 6 coaches (including Vic Metro line coaches) which has been good and he's learnt from each. Chris has been a bit of a sounding board and mentor as a father.

* He's concentrating on exams at the moment and is looking forward to the Nov 22 draft.

* Chris said he was allergic to the backline lol. Patrick is more athletic - can run and jump. Times over 2-3km is very good. Kicking off half-back is what is attracting recruiters. Can push forward too. Patrick is still only a pup. Upside is getting weight onto him.

We delisted him at the end of 2006 and he spent 3 years with North Ballarat playing in two VFL premierships. He then moved west and played for four years with Swan Districts in the WAFL and won another premiership with them in 2010. After that I think he moved back to Victoria to play with the Balwyn Tigers in the EFL.

He actually looked a really good prospect playing in the WAFL. I saw him play  number of times. I was mildly surprised at the time that no AFL gave him a second chance.

Tomorrow's Heroes: A Tiger drought breaker?

Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
November 1, 2017

WHEN Patrick Naish first started training with Richmond as a potential father-son prospect two years ago, he was overawed by standing next to Dustin Martin and having a kick with Trent Cotchin.

That feeling has slowly worn away, but there is still a spring in his step when he walks through the doors at Punt Road Oval. Soon his presence there could be a permanent thing.

The Tigers have first call on the midfielder, who is the son of former Richmond forward Chris Naish, who played 143 games with the club between 1990-97 (before 18 games with Port Adelaide).

As the leading father-son draft candidate this year, Naish pieced together a consistent and exciting under-18 campaign, playing well for the Northern Knights and also winning All Australian honours after an impressive carnival for Vic Metro.

Naish offers something a little different to this year's group of midfield prospects. He is a run-and-carry midfielder who can break the lines with his dash and long right-foot kicking. He's an attacking player who takes the ball forward: he enjoys arching his back and taking it on.

That was evident throughout the national championships, when he averaged 22 disposals (at 65 per cent efficiency) in four games for Vic Metro, and highlighted his raking right-foot kicking. He is creative by foot and quite damaging in some space.

One of Naish's best attributes is his goalkicking craft, which came to the fore at all levels he played this year. In eight games for the Knights he booted 13 goals, including five multiple tallies, he kicked a bag of seven goals at school level, and also chipped in with three majors from four games for Vic Metro. If he has to start his career across half-forward, he can do it comfortably.

Naish will take a bit of time to put on the necessary weight to his frame before being ready to play at the next level, and with that will probably need to build up his inside game. He predominantly plays as an outside midfielder at this stage of his development – about 80 per cent of his disposals were uncontested at the carnival.

With his foot skills, turn of pace and knack for a goal, Naish could develop into a player similar to Essendon's David Zaharakis.

It is always hard to tip where a father-son bid might come, but Naish appears likely to attract one within the first 20 or so selections on draft night. The Tigers are expected to match the bid and make him a Tiger.

Naish appears set to be Richmond's first father-son selection since 2003, and he will go there on merit. With dash, run and a good dose of dare, Naish plays with a purpose.

Tigers nominate Naish as father-son draftee

Callum Twomey

RICHMOND is a step closer to having its first father-son since 2003 after formally nominating Patrick Naish under the AFL's rules.

The Tigers lodged the paperwork this week ahead of the October 31 deadline in a move that will give them the power to match a bid for the midfielder on draft night later this month.

The official nomination is not a guarantee the Tigers will select Naish, however, with the club to wait to see where a bid comes on the son of former Richmond forward Chris before deciding whether to get him to Punt Road.

The best result for the Tigers would be that a bid for Naish doesn't come until after their three top-25 picks (No.17, 20 and 25) and there is a possibility that happens.

It is considered more unlikely than likely a bid will come for the 18-year-old before Richmond's first selection, but it could fall among the next handful of picks.

The lightly built but line-breaking Naish had a strong season in 2017, and was named in the NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian team after a consistent championships for Vic Metro.

He also averaged 22 disposals for the Northern Knights at TAC Cup level and showed his forward prowess by kicking 13 goals in eight games. He has been a member of Richmond's father-son program over the past several years.

His father played 143 games for the club (and 18 for Port Adelaide) and booted 212 goals in the yellow and black between 1990-97.

Collingwood has nominated Tyler Brown (the son of Gavin) under the father-son rule, while Adelaide has nominated Jackson Edwards (the son of Tyson) as a father-son if he makes it through to the rookie draft.

From my understanding (happy to be corrected) but you have to use your next available pick so for us that would be 17. We couldn't package picks 20 and 25 together (for example) but we can use 17 + a later pick I believe so our 3rd/4th rounder, depending what picks we have and what covers the points deficit

so effectively in this trade period we would have received naish, pick 20 and 25, but lose 15 and 17.

I think because we get a 20% discount, if we use our points from 17 and we have some points left over, this will upgrade our next pick?

You have to use your picks in order.

If a bid comes at pick #8 then we need to find 1241 points (Pick 8 is worth 1551 x 80% = 1240.8points)

Pick 17 is worth 1025 points so pick 17 loses all its points and the pick drops down the order to last spot.

We then need to find 216. These have to come off our next pick ie pick #20. Pick 20 is worth 912 points. The 216 gets deducted from 912 leaving 696 points and then pick #20 drops down the order and slots in at pick 28.

If the bid does come at pick #16 we have to find 854points (pick 16 is worth 1067 x 80% = 853.6points)

We then use our next pick being pick #17. It is worth 1025 points. The 854 points are deducted leaving 171 points. Therefor pick #17 falls down the order and slots in at pick #58

Hopefully he goes after our first 2 picks(and by the sounds of it, that is becoming more and more feasible) - that would give us a chance of using our 3rd and 4th rounders on him.

Something like

Balta, Allen and hybrid player (mid/fwd or ruck/fwd) + Naish would just top off a stuffing great year

It certainly covers a few possibilities and the Premiers have 3 picks in the top 25. Not many premiers have had that advantage.

A big year in junior ranks has seen the outside midfielder rise up in the ratings of potential draftees, with most experts now seeing him as worth a pick between 10 and 15.

The Tigers hold picks 17, 20 and 25 and can match any bids made by other clubs, but will hope to keep their first two choices for other needs like a key forward to take over from Jack Riewoldt in the not-too-distant future.

In the recent trade period Richmond swapped a future third-round pick for this year’s 53, suggesting they will try to package up later picks with 25 to secure Naish.

It’s likely clubs will consider bidding for the lightly built 18-year-old if only to force the Tigers’ hand and stop them getting too big a bargain just weeks after winning the premiership.

From Inside Football's draft guide:

PATRICK NAISH

15-Jan-99 | 180.6cm | 68.8kg | Northern Knights
"Naishy played only six games for us and we loved having him in the side. We could play in him a number of roles - he's got enormous 'x-factor'. His GPS numbers are already at AFL level, which doesn't get talked enough about him. When he gets the ball he can hurt the opposition and he's really natural around goals. He worked hard with our tackling coach to improve in that area and he's always the last one on the track having shots at goal an a bit of fun" - Northern Knights talent manager, Rhy Geischen.

Kicking           3.5
Marking          3.5
Accumulating  4
Contested Ball 3
Speed             4
Agility             4.5
Endurance       4.5

Richmond father-son prospect Patrick Naish gets perfect preparation for Tiger stint

FOX SPORTS

RICHMOND’S rise from an embattled club on the verge of sacking its coach to remarkable premiership heroes — all in the space of just 12 months — understandably shocked many.

But not Patrick Naish.

The club’s first father-son prospect since Tom Roach back in 2003, Naish was given an incredible inside look at Richmond’s preparations for both campaigns.

Invited to spend a fortnight doing pre-season training with the Tigers ahead of both their 2016 and 2017 seasons, the change in attitude was the most noticeable difference to the teenager.

There was more energy and more belief within the group in 2017, making the experience of training with his boyhood idols all the more enjoyable for Naish.

But perhaps nothing will be more memorable for the classy youngster than his Grand Final day.

Not only did Naish get to fulfil a dream of his since he could first remember — sit at the MCG and watch the Tigers lift the premiership — he also got to play on the hallowed turf.

Featuring in the Under 18s All-Stars game that acted as the curtain raiser to Richmond’s clash with Adelaide, Naish could hardly believe the stars had aligned in such a manner.

However, in terms of the Tigers actually going all the way, that was less of a shock.

“There was a massive change from last year to this year,” Naish tells foxfooty.com.au.

“Culturally, everyone wanted to do it for each other. That’s what I got out of both. There was a better vibe about it. Everyone was excited and wanted to leave no stone unturned.

“There were a lot more younger boys and everyone was keen to get out there and have a crack.”

Naish is now set to find his way into that squad. For real, this time.

A highly-rated and versatile prospect, the Northern Knights youngster has enjoyed a consistent season that has elevated him into first-round contention ahead of the draft.

It’s perhaps not what Richmond wanted to hear. The extra attention on Naish is likely to force the Tigers into matching an earlier bid on the midfielder than they once might have imagined.

However, having officially lodged AFL paperwork in order to allow themselves first access to Naish as a father-son last week, Richmond looks almost certain to do so anyway.

Despite keeping its cards close to its chest on Naish, the club’s hand was also made more clear during the trade period. A late pick swap deal with the Lions means they now enter the draft with Picks 17, 20 and 25 — giving the Tigers more draft points in order to match a bid.

And should it happen, Naish would be understandably delighted.

“It would be the best thing ever,” he says.

“It’s my dream and it’s what I’ve dreamt of since I was a little kid. It’s something I love doing. It would mean the world to me. I just want to get that opportunity.”

The spotlight was always going to be fixed firmly on Naish this season. It often is with father-son prospects, particularly those at clubs who have not had many in recent years.

It makes the way the athletic youngster has performed in 2017 all the more admirable.

Predominantly a wingman, he averaged 19 disposals in the TAC Cup this season. He also had an impact forward of centre, kicking 13 goals from eight matches with the Knights.

But it was in the national championships where Naish first made his mark.

Playing in a loose role both through the midfield and across half back, he was selected in the carnival’s All-Australian side having averaged 21.8 disposals per game.

According to Champion Data, he also led the competition for metres gained. Given his efficient use of the footy, such an ability to move the ball effectively is a huge tick for recruiters.

However, just as pleasing for Northern Knights talent manager Rhy Gieschen was the way in which Naish evolved as a leader around the club — both on and off the field.

“Whenever he’s in at the club, he’s really well liked and popular,” Gieschen tells foxfooty.com.au.

“He’s really energetic around the group. He’s always got a smile on his face and he’s always the first one to offer his opinion in team meetings.

“His attitude around us, the way he conducts himself and the way he brought the group together, it was really good.”

Naish’s father, Chris, played 143 games for Richmond throughout the 1990s.

Although he wasn’t alive throughout his Tigers career, Naish was around for his dad’s final season at Port Adelaide — where he played 18 games across two years.

The only footy Naish can remember of his father is a couple of highlights clips on YouTube.

His description of those? “He was alright.”

Rather than base his game around his dad’s, Naish prefers to heed his words of wisdom.

“He’s helped me a lot on-field, but off-field he’s helped me a fair bit with being organised and being professional,” Naish says.

“Last year I prepared mentally for this season. I just tried to control what I could control. That’s some advice that dad has given me.

“It’s how to perform each week and it’s the way I’ve gone about it. All of the external stuff is going to be there. But I’ve just controlled what I can control.”

It’s now a nervous wait for Naish.

He’ll not only have to endure the gruelling period before his name is called, but he’ll then have to deal with the agonising two-minute wait to find out if Richmond matches the bid.

It’s bound to throw up a heap of emotions for the youngster.

“The bidding system still keeps you on your toes,” Naish says.

“But obviously I want to go to Richmond. Until my name gets read out, it’s not a sure thing.

“I’m just looking forward to that night and hopefully when it happens.”

Callum Twomey, in his latest podcast on the AFL website, said it's now a growing possibility that Naish will last until after pick 25. Meaning we be able to draft 3 other kids and then use a combo of our later picks to grab Naish as F/S. Twomey said he still rates Naish in the top 15 but clubs in that range won't be interested in the type of player that Naish is. Maybe only the Bulldogs at 16 would consider his type and making a bid.

Couple of clubs with fingers (and toes) crossed when it comes to F/S bids. Tigers may luck out with Naish bid after 25. Lots of intrigue. #AFLDraft

Bid won't come in 1st round on PN, as I hear it. Mid-second more likely.

I don’t think anyone will bid in 1st rd. If bid comes too early Tigers will let him go.

Q. So do you have information that dogs will bid on Naish at 16? Or is that your opinion?

Callum Twomey: They have an interest. But I think others will still be on their board at that stage so it's more unlikely than likely.

Rumour’s circling the St Kilda might bid on Naish with pick 7.
Surely we would pass if this comes to fruition?

These F/S rules are really pooing me off!  Surely a F/S player who we have the right to claim should off the poach list, but sadly, no.  Naish I'm only 50/50 about, but the team who try to poach Maurice Jnr will feel my wrath!     >:(

The bid system is a stuffing joke. All because Bigmouth Fathead bitched about the northern academies so the northern clubs in turn bitched about the father-sons..... and now everybody loses....

..and stuff off to Cornes or Curley or whoever it was too... was their bitching when Adelaide joined the comp that caused the f/s qualificaton to double from 50 to 100 games...

Richmond could secure father-son Patrick Naish outside its top three draft picks

SAM LANDSBERGER,
Herald Sun
November 21, 2017

RICHMOND is set to be spared a difficult draft call on Patrick Naish with the Tigers likely to secure three top-25 talents before a bid arrives on the father-son prospect.

The Tigers will target tall players at Friday night’s draft and using picks 17, 20 and 25 before matching a bid for Naish would be a dream finale to a premiership year.

Richmond has been nervous that an early bid would come after five clubs visited Naish’s home during the season and then Fremantle also interviewed him at draft combine.

But queries on whether the outside midfielder can win his own ball should help Richmond secure the son of 143-game Tiger Chris Naish at a cheaper price.

Naish’s junior career failed Champion Data’s “Magic Number” rule.

That states that draft prospects who win less than 30 per cent of their possessions contested usually struggle in the AFL.

Naish recorded a contested possession rate of 27 per cent from 32 matches.

He averaged 22 possessions for Vic Metro this year, but only 4.5 contested.

A bunch of high draft picks have failed to kick on after recording similar numbers — James Aish, Billy Hartung, Cale Morton and Jimmy Toumpas.

By contrast, No. 1 favourite Cameron Rayner won an impressive 53 per cent of his junior disposals contested across 29 matches.

Rayner and top-five pick Paddy Dow went at 60 per cent at the national championships.

Naish only cracked 100 SuperCoach points in four of his 32 matches.

But he boasts a beautiful right foot and was the No. 1 metres gained player at the national championships.

Naish’s average of 516m was 105m better than the next player as he impressed some recruiters with his natural dare and offensive run.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick has also shown the ability to reprogram outside players.

This year Brandon Ellis went from an uncontested player to one who could win his own ball and use it aggressively.

While Naish can sometimes bite off too much by foot, one recruiter said he had a raking kick and would “look good in (our) jumper”.

Naish’s two younger brothers- Xavier, 16 and Charlie, 12 — are also hopeful of playing for Richmond.

The diehard Richmond fan kicked 10.3 in his 100th junior match and has trained at Punt Rd the past two summers.

Naish grew up idolising Brett Deledio. He sat in the MCG stands watching Richmond’s premiership after recording 21 disposals at 90 per cent efficiency in the curtain-raiser.

He would add a lick of class to Richmond’s existing pressure and grunt.

Patrick Naish prepares to live the AFL dream

Star Weekly
20 November 2017

Northern Knights’ Patrick Naish is waiting on the AFL national draft like many other teenagers around the country.

While the fate of many are unknown, Naish knows he’s almost guaranteed to be selected, it’s just a matter of which team he’ll go to.

Richmond has nominated Naish as a father-son pick. And while Naish said going to the Tigers would be a dream come true he knows the move isn’t guaranteed and another club could swoop on him earlier in the draft.

Either way, he’s happy.

If he is picked up by the Tigers, he will be following in the footsteps of his father Chris Naish, who played 143 games for the yellow and black.

“I’ve barracked for them my whole life,” Naish said last week.

“I was chatting to dad the other day about it and we were saying I’ve just about reached my dream of hopefully getting drafted.

“To play at Richmond is a dream, even to play AFL is one.”

Naish, who has spent some time at Richmond over the past year, said his experiences at the club had helped his football.

“I spent a couple of weeks in the pre-season getting to know everyone and getting to know myself in an elite environment,” he said.

“I was with them all day, every day. I spent a lot of time with the backline group and guys like Brandon Ellis were really good helping me out. I went in and did revision sessions throughout the year and got in there whenever I could.”

The 18-year-old this year combined Northern Knights, school football and being part of the AFL academy. He admits it was difficult at times.

“The key thing was to be organised,” he said. “I’m not the most organised bloke and I had to adapt. I got used to it as the year went on.

“I’ve played with a lot of enjoyment this year,” he said. “I was playing with my mates for the last time and I let results take care of themselves.

“Everyone puts pressure on themselves with football, I just wanted to enjoy it.”

Naish, who plays prominently as a midfielder, knows he has work ahead of him before stepping onto the AFL stage.

With school exams out of the way, he said he would try and relax and spend time with family, his girlfriend and friends before the draft.

“I was a midfielder as a kid and enjoy playing on the wing,” he said. “I enjoyed playing a bit forward and I see myself as a versatile player.

Kevin Sheehan reckons the bid for Naish won't come until midway though the second round.

The father-sons: Patrick Naish

Naish, the son of former Tigers gun Chris Naish, is likely to be the first player to attract a ‘bid’ from a club — likely midway through the second round — and force the Tigers to match, which could send them into draft debt. However Naish is an exciting outside runner with a penetrating kick and knack for the goals.

Bids on Tigers father-son prospect Patrick Naishand Lions academy prospect Connor Ballenden are unlikely to come in the first round.

THIS is where it gets a little confusing.

The entire format for father-son and academy bidding was restructured in 2015 via bidding systems.

Clubs who already have gun academy and father-son youngsters attached to them now have to ‘pay’ to secure these players via multiple picks, because rival clubs have the right to bid on these players. This forces the nominated clubs to match the bid to secure the player. If they don’t, the player goes to the club who made the bid.

Each draft selection now has a points value attached to it, starting with Pick 1 (worth 3000 points) down to Pick 73 (nine points). Picks from 74 onwards are worth nothing.

The best way to explain the scenario is via a hypothetical example.

— LET’S say the GWS Giants bid on Richmond father-son prospect Patrick Naish at Pick 28 (677 points)

— IN order to snare him, the Tigers now have to match the Giants’ bid using the draft picks they already hold.

— FIRST, we must take away a flat 197-point discount (which is automatically given to clubs for bids outside the first round) that would be given to the Tigers, meaning they now have to find 480 points to secure Naish.

— THE Tigers’ next two selections, which are Picks 53 (233) and 55 (207) — but that still doesn’t cover the Giants’ bid, as the Tigers are 40 points short. And because their next selection (Pick 74) holds no points value, they would go into draft debt.

— However all is not lost for the Tigers. The amount of draft points owed (40 in this example) will be deducted from the club’s position in the corresponding round of where the bid was placed in next year’s draft. Therefore, Richmond would lose 40 points of value from its 2018 second round draft pick.

— NOW Patrick Naish is officially selected by the Tigers at Pick 27, but the Tigers lose their two picks in the 50s.

— THE Giants select again at Pick 29 and the predetermined draft order continues from there.

Richmond set to take Patrick Naish as a father-son selection

JON RALPH,
Herald Sun
November 24, 2017

CHRIS Naish has received a positive indication of Richmond’s intent, and only a dramatic development will keep his son Patrick from landing at Punt Rd.

The Tigers seem certain to take the line-breaking, long-kicking utility in Friday night’s draft, an unexpected top-10 bid from a rival the only potential curve ball.

Richmond has the best draft hand of a reigning premier in more than a decade — picks 17, 20 and 25.

No reigning premier since Port Adelaide had four picks within 35 in 2004 has had as many high picks.

Chris Naish said he and wife Leah would be thrilled to see their son follow in his footsteps but also excited Richmond seems on the brink of long-term success.

They met the Tigers again several weeks ago after years of contact and every indication pointed to the Tigers taking him.

Richmond has warned it will not necessarily match an early bid but a pick swap handing them another top-25 selection in the trade period saw them covering their bases.

“Richmond came around a few weeks ago and we signed the father-son forms,” Chris Naish said.

“Even then they were saying they would love to commit.

“We will wait until the day but everything looks positive. They said, ‘We love the kid, we think he has a lot of upside’.

“But, again, they can’t pre-empt what another club will do. They will assess it on the day but the discussions we have had have been very positive.”

Talented swingman Jarrod Brander is regarded as a good chance to slip through to pick 17 as the Tigers go on the hunt for tall players.

To take Brander and two more talls, then match a deal for Naish afterwards, would be a dream draft for the Tigers.

Chris Naish played 143 of his 161 AFL games with Richmond between (190-97).

The stocky, clever 173cm forward kicked 212 goals for the Tigers before crossing to Port Adelaide, where he played 18 games and kicked 16 goals in 1998-99.

Some recruiters are concerned Patrick, a lovely kick who has played half-back and half- forward, wins fewer than 30 per cent of his possessions in the contest.

His father agrees with AFL talent boss Kevin Sheehan, who believes his massive upside combats any worries about contested possessions.

“He has got good endurance, he has got good athleticism, the opposite to his dad,” Naish said.

“The other thing is that he’s not too developed yet. He has already got attributes you could say are good for the AFL but he has a lot of development. So he will put on size and weight.”

Naish would be Richmond’s first father-son pick since Tom Roach in 2003.

“No doubt I would be proud,” Chris Naish said.

“He would be joining a club that is on the rise and in a really strong position.

“They have got their backyard in order, and I can’t see why they wouldn’t have sustained success for a period of time.

“As a former player it’s only a good thing to know your club is in good hands.”

Patrick Naish becomes a Tiger

Richmond have matched St Kilda's pick 34 at Friday night's AFL Draft to land Patrick Naish as a father-son selection, their fourth pick on the night.

Here is a summary of what Richmond fans can expect to see from Naish...

Patrick Naish profile

Born: 15/1/1999

Height: 181cm

Weight: 68kg

Position: Midfielder

From: Ivanhoe/Northern Knights

Patrick comes to Richmond under the father-son rule (Chris Naish played 143 games for the Tigers from 1990-97.

He has been a member of the AFL Academy for the past two years, and completed his schooling in 2017 at Ivanhoe Grammar.

Throughout this year, Patrick combined playing for multiple teams, including Ivanhoe, Northern Knights in the TAC Cup competition, Vic Metro in the under-18 national championships and the AFL Academy.

Patrick averaged 22 disposals per match for Vic Metro during the 2017 under-18 carnival, playing off a wing, half-back, as well as through the midfield, and was subsequently rewarded for his impressive efforts by being named in the All-Australian team.

He played eight games for the Northern Knights this year, predominantly in a midfield role.

The eye-catching performance he produced in the Round 17 match against Murray Bushrangers – 25 disposals, six tackles and three goals – highlighted the considerable talent he possesses.

Patrick is a natural runner, who generates significant drive for his team all over the ground through elite kicking skills and offensive creativity.

He also has an excellent leap, which makes him a threat in the air with his marking power when playing as a forward.

We are excited to have our first father-son selection in many years.

Richmond’s fourth pick in the recent 2017 AFL national draft, father-son selection, Patrick Naish, talks about his transition to Tigerland and his main goals leading into season 2018 . . .

Tasmania training camp

“There was a fair bit of walking and complaining, but it was good.  It was good to be away from the Club and just have that connection with a few of those older boys (Riewoldt, Lambert, Nankervis) and the boys that got drafted . . . There was a lot of walking and a lot of tough days, but we got through it.”

Prospects of playing at the top level in 2018

“I think it’s realistic, but I just want to get off on the right foot, work hard before Christmas, then the rest of the pre-season leading up to Round 1, and get my body and mental space ready to have, hopefully, a good first year . . . I need to put on a bit of size.  That’s the first thing I need to get hold of over the pre-season.  But I think my skill level is, I believe, up to the standard . . . I just want to have a crack this pre-season, put my best foot forward for whenever the (senior) opportunity comes.”

Slight initial pre-season setback

“I’m in rehab at the moment, so I haven’t been out with the main group, which is frustrating.  I hurt my Achilles on the camp . . . A couple of us first-year boys have got the same little one (injury), but it’s nothing too major.  I should be running by the end of the week, I think . . . It looks out there that the boys are humming around and they’re up and about.  It’s something very, very exciting and something I’d enjoy, that’s for sure.”

Fatherly advice

“He (dad Chris, who had a 143-game career with Richmond) just said enjoy it.  Make my own path and sort enjoy whatever comes.  Obviously he played and he experienced it.  So enjoy it, work hard, and you’ll reap the rewards in the future.”

Thrilled to be a Tiger

“It’s a bit weird training with your idols, who you’ve grown up loving, but I’m loving every minute of it.  I’m loving coming to my work now . . . just enjoying it so much.”

Tigerland mentors

“I was working with Brandon Ellis before I came here.  He’s still helping me a bit with that half-back role.  But I’ve started to go more in the midfield and blokes like Josh Caddy and ‘Grigga’ (Shaun Grigg) have helped me as well with my positioning at stoppages and stuff.  They’ve been unreal.”

Naish family keen to get to the game

Steve Kelly
Wangaratta Chronicle
19 Feb 2018

THE Naish family of Wangaratta will have about 20 relatives in the crowd for this Saturday’s Essendon versus Richmond clash in support of nephew, cousin and new Tigers player Patrick Naish.

It’s more than likely that the young gun will be named in the Tigers’ side, his first run for his new club since being drafted at pick number 34 in the 2018 AFL National Draft under the father-son rule.

His dad, Chris Naish – a dynamic small forward who played with the Tigers from 1990 to 1997 – hailed from Wangaratta and it will be somewhat of a homecoming with many of his relatives watching the game closely.

Chris Doyle, the uncle of Patrick will be joining his family to cheer on the Tigers, and even though he is a devoted Hawthorn supporter, his two sons have now defected to Richmond.

“My daughter has defected to Geelong because she likes Patrick Dangerfield and my sons swapped to Richmond when their cousin was drafted last year,” Chris said hesitantly.

“There was a bit of light chatter last week about where we’ll sit at Saturday’s game and we’ll probably go where the Naish Waste sign is at the Norm Minns Oval.”

Richmond development coach Ryan Ferguson with an insight into the impressive progress of talented Tiger cub Patrick Naish.

Strong pre-season

“He worked really hard pre-season on his game, but also on his body. I think he put on eight kilos, which is a pretty impressive effort. But also, his ability to continue to run with the weight on was really important. He’s still looking like he’s covering the ground well, which is important.”

On-field role

“He’s almost had a 50-50 split of wing and half-back, which is great for the flexibility in his game. He can go back and see the game and read it well. But also he can run the wing and get out and get some handball-receives. He’s a penetrating kick for us . . . he’s developed that side of his game.”

Difficult opposition match-up

“He’s hard to deal with for some of the VFL teams coming up against us. They have to worry about him now. His ball use is elite and the contested side of his game’s coming along really well, too. Sometimes on the skinny-side wing you’ve got to get in and get dirty and win some of your own ball. And he’s been good at that.”

Improvements in his game

“His defensive running and his patterns and his ability to tackle and step into the contest has improved out of sight . . . Sometimes when you work on your deficiencies it takes away from your strengths, but he’s been able to improve both, which is outstanding.”

Title: Tigers' father-son Patrick Naish in mix for senior debut (Herald-Sun)

Tigers father-son in mix for senior debut

Richmond has provided some of the top SuperCoach rookies of the season and Patrick Naish could be next in line after Sydney Stack, Jack Ross and Liam Baker.

Naish ($123,900, Def) has been a standout for the club’s unbeaten VFL team this year and had 122 ranking points in the Tigers’ victory over Williamstown on Sunday. He hasn’t dipped below 90 points in the VFL this year and opportunity could be knocking after Daniel Rioli and Nick Vlastuin copped knocks in Richmond’s loss to Western Bulldogs.

“He ended up with 23 disposals, but the pleasing part of it is his 10 contested possessions and he’s just playing great footy. He’s setting us up with inside-50s and clearances,” Tigers VFL coach Craig McRae said.

“What a luxury”: Why young Tiger will benefit from extended VFL stint

By SEN
29 May 2019

Richmond youngster Patrick Naish will benefit from learning his craft in the VFL before his eventual integration into the senior side, according to Garry Lyon.

Naish – the son of former Tigers small forward Chris – was selected by the Tigers with pick No.34 in the 2017 AFL Draft and is still waiting to make his AFL debut.

By biding his time at VFL level, Lyon believes the father-son draftee will flourish at the next level in a similar pathway to that of Geelong sensation Gryan Miers.

“You have a kid called Patrick Naish, who is the son of Chris. He’s playing really good VFL footy,” the former Melbourne skipper told SEN Breakfast.

“A highly rated, high draft pick who was a star in the under 18 competition … they haven’t even trotted him out yet, Richmond.

“You compare him to a Liam Stocker for instance or a Jack Lukosius up on the Gold Coast who just get thrown into their teams and just keep getting played.

“In the meantime, Patrick Naish is just doing his stuff a bit like Gryan Miers last year, a year of VFL footy against senior men with no real time pressure – what a luxury.

“Learn your craft, learn the standards … you get a really test of where you’re at. Then when they come in, they’re ready.”

Naish, 20, has been in fine form mixing his time between half-back and wing in Richmond's VFL side that sits on top of the ladder with seven wins from seven games.

Naish to debut

Richmond father-son selection, Patrick Naish, will make his AFL debut against Geelong in Friday night’s Round 12 clash at the MCG.

Naish (182cm and 75kg), who was taken at pick 34 overall in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft, splits his time between half-back and on the wing.

His father, Chris Naish, played 143 games for the Tigers from 1990-1997.

The 20-year-old receives the call up after standout form in the VFL, where he has averaged 25.9 disposals a game this season.

Richmond development and VFL backline coach Ryan Ferguson provided an insight into the impressive progress of the Tiger cub in a recent edition of ‘Coaches’ Corner’, lauding his penetrating kick, hard-running and elite ball-use.

“He worked really hard pre-season on his game, but also on his body. I think he put on eight kilos, which is a pretty impressive effort,” Ferguson said.

“His defensive running and his patterns and his ability to tackle and step into the contest has improved out of sight.

“He can go back and see the game and read it well. But also, he can run the wing and get out and get some handball-receives.”

Naish will be Richmond’s fifth AFL debutant in 2019, following the debuts of Noah Balta, Jack Ross, Sydney Stack and most recently, Callum Coleman-Jones.

Probably a hard night to judge given the team's "effort". What did we all think of Paddy's debut?

20 disposals (15k, 5h, 3c, 17u, 60% eff.)
5 marks
2 tackles
5 inside F50s
1 rebound D50
4 clangers
1 goal
74% time on ground.

 He was good

Made a couple of bad blues but I out that down to the tempo of AFL to VFL

He needs to add a lot of bulk. Get some size on him and he will be a good player long term

For a first game in pox circumstances, he went great.  Love that long kick, he is gonna be a great asset.  All the young ones have been having a real crack, so many debutants this year, some of em really look good.  peeed off as I was, it is still looking good for the future as long as we can stop the poo injury run.

I won’t lie, I think he was ok.

I’ll go back and watch it again but there wasn’t anything he did where I thought “this kid has something” (like with Stack or Balta in the first 5 minutes)
He did some nice things you would expect a kid who was good enough to get drafted, but that was it IMO.

Is he just another Menadue??

He'll  be better than Menadue I think - though that's not really saying much, but he looks like he at least knows how to find the ball and stay involved in the game.....Turner will be considerably better than both. :shh

Foxsports has Naish as a "big ball-winner" (at VFL level) that has struggled for consistent stints in their respective AFL sides this season and could be attractive propositions for rival clubs.

Patrick Naish (Richmond)

Naish has been on Richmond’s list for the past four seasons but only managed nine games, including six this season. He’s been prolific and versatile in the VFL, booting five goals and averaging 27.6 disposals and 7.2 marks from his five games in 2021. The father-son prospect wants to remain at the Tigers. Whether he can get more opportunities at AFL level at the Tigers, if offered another contract, remains to be seen, for Richmond is still well placed to have another flag tilt with its best line-up.

"Richmond have been the best team of the last four years and it just so happens I was there for that period. I felt I did everything I could, so I'm now ready for another opportunity."

- Patrick Naish

https://twitter.com/traderadio/status/1443729308946612240

Patrick Naish has had discussions with "a couple of clubs" as he searches for another opportunity after being discarded by Richmond.

The midfielder told Trade Radio that coach Damien Hardwick was transparent throughout his time at the Tigers that Naish needed to put on weight and work on his contested game.

"I'm continuing to build up my body. I've built that and I've done that, I'm up to AFL-level in terms of that, but can still get a bit stronger in my physique," Naish said.

"Then continue to work on my contested game, it probably wasn't a massive strength of mine.

"I feel like I'm most damaging on the wing, even at half-back or half-forward. I'm a pretty good decision-maker, got a pretty good kick, I can read the game well and I've got good leg speed."

4 years on the list and still 182/77. Too small for me, and he plays soft to boot because I have to admit not all skinny kids are bruise free but this one sure is.

Hard to carry blokes who play loose, unaccountable footy. Short on his own is bad enough.

Naish on SEN WA:

“I finished up with Richmond at the end of last year, went out on pretty good terms. They were pretty open with what I need to improve on, probably my playing style didn’t fit Dimma’s (Hardwick) sort of play I guess,” Naish told SEN WA’s Scotty and Goss.

“(That) is completely fine, he’s the coach so I can’t really argue with that.

“Then I signed at Norwood in the SANFL, previously I’ve had conversations with the Eagles (but) it was pretty hard to get me over here.

“So I thought I was going to play for Norwood Footy Club, which was unreal, I spent about six weeks over in Adelaide and loved my time training with the boys there.

“Then I got invited down to training with the Saints, probably four weeks ago now, and had two and a half weeks there.

“Then the borders opened over here and I was literally on the first flight over here to train with the Eagles.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind but I wouldn’t change it for the world, I’m pretty excited with the Eagles.”

“I think Simmo (Simpson) helped a fair bit with that,” Naish stated.

“He sort of just wanted me to go out and play footy, he felt my strengths were good enough to be on the list in the end and I sort of saw it as an opportunity to go play footy.

“I felt like I did play my role for the team on Sunday night, Simmo was pretty good during the week. Not getting too stuck in the structures and everything, because obviously, I’d been there three days, he was just keen for me to go play footy and have fun, which I did, I loved Sunday night.”
