Injury list: Who's stuck in the medical room at your club

RICHMOND
Jack Graham (hamstring tendon, 1-2 weeks): The draftee has a history of quad issues but this time it was his hamstring to cause him concern. Being so young, the club is being conservative with his recovery but he should be back in the main group soon.
Steven Morris (ACL, 12-16 weeks): The hard-nosed defender is in the rehab group after rupturing the ACL in his right knee against North Melbourne in round 11 last year. He is progressing well and may return slightly ahead of schedule.
Dion Prestia (knee, 2-3 weeks): Surgery ended his 2016 season but the former Gold Coast onballer is doing plenty and is not far away from joining full training.
Others
Star forward Jack Riewoldt joined the main group before Christmas but earlier had a right ankle reconstruction and had the little finger on his right hand operated on twice. Corey Ellis and Ben Griffiths are back after groin troubles.

RICHMOND
The Tigers have close to a clean bill of health after coming through their first JLT Series game unscathed — a nice change from last year’s pre-season train wreck.
Alex Rance missed the win against Adelaide with hamstring tendinitis but he will play against Port Adelaide on Sunday.
Bachar Houli (hamstring), Jack Graham (hamstring) and Shaun Hampson (back) haven’t been sighted in serious pre-season hitouts but the injuries are not believed to be serious.
Steve Morris is making good progress in his comeback from knee surgery.
Dion Prestia had a late start to pre-season and will sit out Sunday’s game in Mt Gambier as the Tigers manage his preparation for Round 1.

Injury update - 01/03/2017
Steve Morris (knee, 6-8 weeks): Remains in the rehab group after his right knee ACL repair in June. Morris is progressing well and targeting a round four return, with a VFL appearance slated for round one or two.
Bachar Houli (hamstring, 2 weeks): Has endured an interrupted pre-season due to a problematic hamstring that keeps tightening up. The Tigers are confident he’ll gain some practice-match minutes in their final pre-season game against Collingwood on March 11.
Jack Graham (hamstring, 4 weeks): Despite his history of quad issues, it’s been a hamstring that’s hampered the draftee’s first pre-season. Remains up to a month away from playing with the club to remain conservative with his management.
Others
Alex Rance has been dealing with hamstring tendinitis but will be named to face Port Adelaide on Sunday in a bid to get ready for the season opener on March 23, but Shaun Hampson could struggle to be fit in time to face his old side Carlton with back tightness an on-going concern. - Jennifer Phelan

RICHMOND
Another win and another clean sheet on the injury front from the Tigers after two JLT Series games.
Ben Griffiths rolled his ankle against Port Adelaide but played on and David Astbury returned and was among Richmond’s best after limping to the bench early in the game.
Dion Prestia was rested but will return against Collingwood on Saturday.
Shaun Hampson (back) and Bachar Houli (hamstring) remain unsighted so far this pre-season and are running out of time to get up for Round 1.

"Spoke to Jack Graham. He is over this hamstring issues and is looking forwards to playing VFL. Looks like a very ambitious sort of bloke. Doesn't mince his words."

Sounds like Ben Lennon
-
I like the 'cut of Graham's jib'. Looked fit and strong in the stand chatting with Rioli at the VFL praccy match.
-
Had a chat to Jack Graham at the season launch.
Impressive young man.
Definitely playing the VFL practice game Thursday night
Kudos to the fitness and medicos for taking the ultra conservative approach with his hamstring problem. Perhaps they have seen the light
-
Looking forward to seeing this young wrecking ball smashing the packs

Morris to return via VFL
richmondfc.com.au
March 27, 2017 4:34 PM
Morris, 28, has been sidelined since Round 11 of last season - when he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager, Peter Burge confirmed Morris would line-up in Thursday's VFL hit-out against Collingwood VFL at Punt Road Oval.
Tickets are still available for our opening home game against Collingwood, from $25 (Adults), $17 (Concession) and $5 (Children).
"Steve's attacked his training the way he attacks games, he’s hard at it and he’s done such a great job," Burge said.
"We really look forward to having him back playing football."
Burge also provided an update on Shaun Hampson's back injury.
"We’ve identified the specific area that’s giving him the issue and he trained (on Sunday) with the group," he said.
"He’s still got some things that he needs to progress with and he’s got some time to do it. We’re looking at hopefully the second two thirds of the year (to see) him playing."
Richmond youngster Jack Graham joined Hampson on the Club's long-term injury list, after the 19-year-old injured his left ankle during a training session last Tuesday.
"He was in a drill and sort of fell on his ankle and got caught up in a bad position and ended up with a little fracture in the bottom of his tibia, a little bit of ligament damage," Burge said.
"That fracture is going to need a little bit of time, it’s at least an eight-week injury which is so disappointing, he was going to play his first game in the VFL last Thursday, so terrible news."
Burge also confirmed no Tigers were injured in last Thursday night's win over Carlton.

Say what you want about his playing ability, it's good to hear someone like Morris who tries his hardest and bleeds for the club is making his comeback and his knee is healthy :clapping

Ran off the field at the open training session, didn't stop to sign the autograph of a small boy who yelled out his name. "Doing weights now" he said as he ran off.
Might bleed for the club but there's a pretty disappointed kid who doesn't think so.

Agree, he needs to bring that into his game, it may delay the inevitable

Exactly, although he does run to the bench faster and Han anyone in th comp

Agree, although Matt White would also have some say in that regard, he was a fine runner off

Talented Richmond half-forward, Shane Edwards, has been sidelined with a hip injury.
Edwards sustained the injury during last Thursday night’s Round 2 victory over Collingwood at the MCG.
“Late in the fourth quarter, he had an incident close to goal and hurt his hip. It’s come back that he’s actually done a little bit of damage. So he’s going to miss a little bit of time . . . a couple of weeks at this stage,” the Tigers’ Physical Performance Manager, Peter Burge, told ‘Roar Vision’.
“He’ll start a rehab program later this week.
“We look forward to getting Shane back at some point, but it’s not going to be in the next two weeks.”
In further injury news at Punt Road, dynamic midfielder Dustin Martin will undergo a fitness test later this week after damaging his cheekbone against the Magpies.
“He copped a whack in the side of his cheekbone and we got a scan and it’s come back with a small crack,” Burge said.
“He did play three quarters of the game with it and did well. So we’ll assess him during the week.
“I would be hopeful that he’d be out there on the weekend, but that’ll be a medical call on Dustin.”
Tall Tiger forward, Ben Griffiths, who was forced to leave the field last Thursday night with concussion, when he landed heavily from a marking contest, has been ruled out of Saturday’s Round 3 clash with West Coast at the MCG.
“’Griffo’ has had a couple of concussions in the past. Even though it is a longer break this week (nine days), the ‘doc’ has already made the call that he won’t play,” Burge said.
“We’ve got to give him the right time to recover and then assess where we go from here . . .”
Meanwhile, promising, young, rookie-listed, tall forward, Mabior Chol, faces a fitness test after being concussed while playing for the Tigers’ VFL team in a practice match against Collingwood last Thursday.
“’Mabs’, with his concussion, has pulled up quite well . . . He’ll have to go through the standard testing protocol during the week, but given he’d had little history with concussion, we’d expect him to get up this weekend,” Burge said.

Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin was left dazed after receiving an accidental forearm to the head from West Coast's Brad Sheppard in the third term.
The 22-year-old was bleeding from his nose and sat out the rest of the match after failing a concussion test at three-quarter time.
On Saturday, Tigers coach Damien Hardwick expected Vlastuin to "bounce back and be right for next week".

Does anyone know what a concussion test during a game consists of and then what following that determines whether a player is available the following week. Having watched a bit of rugby league you see guys who get hit and literally don't know where they are and then seem fine the following week and sometimes even play on during games. Seems to be a different interpretation of concussion between the two codes.
-
Doctors and clubs are afraid of legal action later so tread very carefully in this area. Oh

In the early 90s at local level it was 'what day is it today'. If you said the weekend you were good to go.

Can anyone shed any further light on this story?

Wasn't it only 4 weeks ago he had surgery on his shoulder? It'd be very unlikely he would recover from shoulder surgery to play footy in such a short time frame.

I heard the same thing SEN wasn't it?
Was surprised at the time but then thought players sometimes have a different view on how "right" they are than the surgeons :huh3

What would surgeons know

conca out for 3-6 weeks - hard to believe i'm saying this but it's a real shame ... thought he was starting to show some poise in our back half. Hopefully doesn't lose any of his form whilst in recovery.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-05-04/inform-tiger-reece-conca-injures-lisfranc-joint-out-for-36-weeks
REECE Conca's unlucky run with injury has continued, with the Tiger set for a stint on the sidelines with a foot problem he suffered in Richmond's loss to Adelaide last week.
The 24-year-old 's strong form so far this season will be interrupted for "3-6 weeks" according to the club after injuring the Lisfranc joint in his foot.
He sustained the injury early in the Tigers' heavy loss to the Crows and this week learnt of its severity, with coach Damien Hardwick ruing Conca's poor injury history.
"When we get really excited about his progress, unfortunately, something like this happens. We're really pleased with the season he's put out thus far and he'll work his way back into the side," Hardwick said on Thursday.
"I've got no doubt he's going to be a good player. He just hasn't had a good run for it and at some stage his luck's going to turn. We're hoping this will be the back of it."
-
It's a shame because he was becoming quite serviceable down back. I have never questioned his potential but damn it his body is made of balsa wood and tissue paper almost Griffiths like. So Vlastuin should move back to defence and finally we can bring in Milo?
-
Could YR or the other Doc comment on this
If it is a true lisfranc injury then 3-6 weeks is being coy and I would expect him to be out for 6 weeks minimum (without knowing the extent of the injury). It could be a lot longer if it requires surgery. It's the same injury that forced Ricky Petterd to retire :shh and I'm pretty sure it kept Mitch Clark out of the game for over 12 months
-
Oh and how can I forget (I had to Google ;D) that it was also the injury that finished Dane Swan's career
-
It's the same injury that forced Ricky Petterd to retire :shh
Sort of, in that Ricky's injury also included a lot more structural damage to other parts of his foot, more to it than just the Lisfranc thing
And FWIW although I am no medico I am very comfortable with what I've posted above, got it from the perfect source and that's the bloke himself
Wont' go into which teammate caused it ;D
-
Oh I'm sure it was the combination of it all I won't doubt that but I wouldn't be surprised if the lisfranc was the sealer (similar to Swan).
I'd hazard a guess Morris ;)

Agreed.
Almost impossible to comment without knowing the severity of the injury. The fact he isn't, to my knowledge, having surgery means that there is no fracture which is obviously a good thing. Despite this, ligament damage can take a good 6 weeks to heal. It is not a great injury to have as a footballer.
My guess is that he'll be off for 6 to 8 weeks rather than 3 although again I'm commenting from experience rather than knowing the exact extent of Reece's injury. I just may be a very very mild sprain. However, knowing the continued statements of "is 2 to 3 weeks away" for several months are extremely common coming from our club, I would be more pessimistic than optimistic. :whistle

He was still having the odd brain fade down back which was costing us dearly....
-
Conca's latest injury is typical of the player he is. He sastained that injury because he failed to do the simple thing of using the first option when he had the footy.
It sums him up imo.
I re-watched the first quarter again yesterday and there was another instance where he was just to lazy to chase his man which resulted in an Adelaide goal. The footage was from behind the goals and he showed no respect to his opponent.
I've liked Conca in the past but the reality is he is barely up to AFL standard. He does some really good things but then does some things that make you think he is never going to be more than just back up. All players that are drafted have talent so they are all going to have good parts in games but it's the ones that minimise their mistakes that become good AFL footballers.
Rance is the perfect example of this, he showed he had something in his first few years but the knock on him was his brain fades, but he has learned to minimise those as well as improve his good stuff.
I'd trade him out at the end of the year. We as a club need to make tough decisions on these types of players.
He unfortunately has been a flop and pick 6 has been wasted.

Injury update
Physical Performance Manager, Peter Burge, provides an update:
As mentioned in the other thread, Vlastuin has a fracture of his right scapula. Out for 3-4 weeks.
Townsend - right to go this week. Needed a week of no footy after that poke in the eye.
Edwards - resumes skill training this week. So if all goes will should be ready to play.
Conca - Injury can come in varying degrees (minor to serious). He's be in a boot for the next 2-3 weeks. If his foot has healed after taking off the boot then he can progress towards normal training.
Prestia - They narrowed it down to a slight hammy. 50/50 call although given his limited preseason he's more likely to miss this week. Good news is there's no issues with is knee. His training load will increase towards the second half of the season and he should be hitting his peak by then.
Graham - running on the alt-G. We need to get him to the stage where he can run carrying his own body weight. Still 4-5 weeks away. He's a young player so we will take our time to get him right as he'll be a long term player for us.
Broad - Doing conditioning at the moment. He's scheduled for a round 11 return.

The Tigers have described Prestia's hamstring injury as "very minor", but it has sidelined him for two matches now. He'll be tested on the track this week after spending time in the rehab group late last week. Richmond injury list: Todd Elton shoulder, Ivan Soldo knee hurt in VFL
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
5 June 2017
RICHMOND’S key position stocks continue to dwindle as the club faces a decision on surgery for Todd Elton.
The Tigers confirmed on Sunday key-position forward Elton’s shoulder was dislocated in Saturday’s VFL loss to Werribee.
Elton had kicked only a single goal in his six AFL games this year, but given Richmond’s injury issues remains a key back-up to Jack Riewoldt.
Ben Griffiths remains out indefinitely with concussion, while Shaun Hampson has been sidelined all year with a back injury.
Richmond football boss Neil Balme said the Tigers hoped Elton would not need surgery.
“He has a dislocated shoulder. We will see him tomorrow and make some sort of decision. Some blokes need surgery and some don’t. Hopefully he doesn’t.”
The Tigers believe Ivan Soldo could return after the bye after he dodged a serious leg injury in the same VFL game.
There were serious fears over 2017 debutante Soldo, but he has pulled up well.
“It looked like he had done something to his knee, but his hip was jammed up. We think he’s reasonably good.” Balme said.
Balme said Griffiths remained in good spirits and improving but there is no timeline on his return from repeated concussions.

Vlastuin is likely to be held back one more week, but the Tigers are planning to bring draftee Graham off the long-term injury list to play limited VFL minutes if he gets through training this week. Vlastuin to miss another week
richmondfc.com.au
June 14, 2017 6:02 PM
Richmond utility Nick Vlastuin is getting closer to making his return from a shoulder injury, but won't feature at any level this weekend.
The 23-year-old fractured the scapula in his right shoulder in Richmond’s Round 7 loss to the Western Bulldogs.
Vlastuin is expected to be available for the Round 14 match against Carlton at the MCG next Sunday, June 25.
Be there as Saturday arvo footy returns to the ‘G this week when the Tigers host Sydney
In other injury news at the Swinburne Centre, further scans have revealed Richmond tall forward Todd Elton will be sidelined for another four to five weeks after dislocating his shoulder.
Elton, 24, sustained the injury in the VFL Tigers' Round 7 match against Werribee but did not require surgery.
Young Tiger Jack Graham could play his first game in the yellow and black this weekend, but will need to get through fitness testing before putting his hand up for VFL selection.
Graham battled a hamstring injury during the pre-season, before experiencing a further injury setback in late-March.
The 19-year-old sustained a small fracture in his left ankle and was placed on the Club’s long-term injury list.
The Club has lodged paperwork to reinstate him to the primary list ahead of the VFL Tigers' Round 9 match against Geelong VFL at Punt Road Oval this Saturday.
Richmond small forward Jason Castagna will subsequently return to the Club’s rookie list, but will then be reinstated to the primary list in place of the injured Nathan Drummond.

Lennon, Morris sidelined with hamstring injuries
richmondfc.com.au
28 June 2017
Scans have revealed the extent of Richmond pair Ben Lennon and Steve Morris’ hamstring injuries.
Talented, young forward Lennon sustained a hamstring injury in last Friday’s training session and was subsequently withdrawn from the Tigers’ 25-man Round 14 AFL squad.
Lennon, 21, will be sidelined for the next one to two weeks, while the news is not as good for Morris.
The tough defender suffered a significant strain to his right hamstring in the third quarter of the VFL Tigers' Round 10 win over the Northern Blues last Sunday.
Scans have revealed the 28-year-old will miss the next four to six weeks.
In other injury news at the Swinburne Centre, Callum Moore (one week) and Todd Elton (one to two weeks) are getting closer to returning from ankle and shoulder injuries, respectively.

Good to see some players coming back in Moore and Elton we need some more body's.
Youwould think Conca is probably finished?
-
A couple of the docs on this site said they'd be surprised if he played again this season and wouldn't be surprised if he never played again.
Speaking to someone whose had this injury - 18 months down the track and it was still painful..
-
With Elton probably returning to play footy this weekend, what are people's thoughts on him potentially coming back in to play that second tall forward if he plays a couple of good games in the twos?
Or have people put a line through his name already?
I really don't know myself. I though he competed really well in his first 4 or 5 games without much reward but he fell away towards the end and was basically useless.
We definitely need that second tall forward option but I'm not sure it's Elton.
-
BT, I thought Elton was a big joke the first couple of games, skills were abysmal but he grew on me with his effort, saw him compete hard and give us an option for the release kick down the line. But after the next 2-3 games(4-5 in total) his efforts went downhill which is unacceptable from a player that struggles to take marks and kick goals.
Im tempted to put a line through his name now BUT wouldnt be against bringing back for another chance mainly to give Nankervis a bit of a chop out in the ruck. We cant keep rotating Grigg and caddy through the ruck, its ridiculous. I prefer to play him over Soldo and as much as I want to see garthwaite get a run he definitely wont play 2nd ruck. I dont know what the andwer is, but we need to do something and soon bc by the time september comes round, nank will be stuffed if we keep doing this to him
-
He looks like a player who doesn't try because he doesn't think he belongs as opposed to Tyrone who didn't try because he couldn't bF'ed
-
I'd rest Nank against Brisbane without doubt.
-
Brisbane showed Essendon last week that you can't afford to take any side lightly this year....Nankervis will get a week's rest between round 23 and the finals like everyone else...presuming we make finals of course...

Grimes was ruled out for the entire second half against the Saints after being struck high by Tim Membrey in a collision that cost the Saints forward a two-match suspension.

Updated: Tuesday, August 8
Player Injury Estimated Return
Reece Conca* Foot 1 week
Nathan Drummond* Knee Season
Ben Griffiths Shoulder 1 week
Shaun Hampson* Back Available
Steven Morris Hamstring Test
Jack Riewoldt Eye Test
Early prognosis
Ruckman Shaun Hampson is set to play limited minutes in the VFL after a long lay-off with a back injury having ramped up his running in recent weeks. The Tigers are also optimistic defender Reece Conca will be able to play in the next week or two. Steven Morris has been sidelined for six matches with a hamstring injury and is due to push his case for a return, likely through the VFL.

With Hampson and soon Conca back, what happens to our promoted rookies?
-
Were Castagna & Stengle's promotions related to the LTI list? Think the former was the pre-season promotion which we usually leave a spot for by going one short on the senior list and the latter was after round 11 when I'm pretty sure club's are allowed to promote another rookie regardless of LTI's. Could be wrong though...
EDIT: Think Castagna was actually Yarran's replacement.
-
Those were my thoughts. Forgot about Yarran though

fmd how funny are these pricks rushing these 2 duds back, or on the flip side these duds thinking they are going to make a difference.

Defender Reece Conca and tall forward Ben Griffiths are making a late run to play finals, with the pair set to return through the VFL if they can pass fitness tests this week.
Conca, who started the season in terrific form, has been sidelined for the past three months with a Lisfranc joint injury in his foot, while Griffiths has played just two senior games this season because of multiple concussions.
The tall forward also suffered a dislocated shoulder in his second game back in the VFL in round 18.
Defender Steve Morris, who has been sidelined since round 15 with a hamstring injury, also faces a fitness test this week before being considered for selection.

You forgot Hampson :eyebrow

In reality we have to be one of the healthiest sides in the competition, have been lucky.....touch wood.
-
you couldnt make this poo up if you tried.
-
Serious question: would Hampson be better to bring into a finals campaingn than Soldo?
I think maybe he would.
I like Soldo as a prospect but I don't think he's ready for finals . Hampson might be the best of a bad lot.
-
Would play every KPP on the list before Hamspud,....think absence has made people's hearts grow fonder and they've forgotten just how utterly putrid he is...bloke's nothing but a liability....
-
you couldnt make this poo up if you tried.
Yep. It would be extremely difficult, but you have to tip your hat to Dimma as he is one in a billion who CAN make it up. :clapping

John Caddy?
Would that be Josh Caddy's twin brother?
Nice thought though.
:cheers
-
:banghead we have a near full strength list to choose from.
-
The Tigers are confident Caddy will be fit to return after the pre-finals bye, giving them a one-week window to prepare him for a blockbuster final. The Tigers' list is in the best shape it has been all season after Reece Conca and Ben Griffiths came off the injury list and returned through the VFL. Steven Morris also returned through the VFL at the weekend following a seven-week hamstring injury. - Nathan Schmook
