According to Barrett tonight, the AFL will reveal a footy version of T20 Big Bash after the H/A season with the best clubs that miss the finals playing.
It's a slimmed down version footy:
* Played on soccer-size pitches.
* 7 players-a-side with 3 interchange.
* Four 10 min quarters.
* No centre bounces. Kick-ins after each goal.
* Competition to go for a week after H/A season.

One of the beauties of our game and culture is that you can go to a game, sit anywhere and interact with supporters of both sides without the problems they have overseas. Why on earth would they take that away.

CLUBS will be able to rotate through 14-player squads during next week's AFLX tournaments.
Seven players will be on the field at any one time, with three players on the interchange bench for each game.
However, teams will be able to make up to four changes to their line-up between games, increasing the likelihood of clubs selecting some of their bigger names.

From a Hawks fan on BF:
For those with any interest you guys sent a squad our way today .....
Final score was 113 v 72 Hawks way .
Both squads very lite on ....like what I saw of Bolton and Broad solid playing as a tall in this hybrid game .
You were far better structured than us in the first half and lead at the change .
We switched to a little man on man for a while and that few a few things out .
Menadue gets over the ground well in this formate I must say but his finishing let him down at times .
All in all just a hit and giggle .....no injurys

Richmond assistant coach, Justin Leppitsch and development coach, Xavier Clarke will coach the Tigers’ AFLX team for their tournament in Sydney on February 17.
The Tigers had their first taste of AFLX, the League’s newest version of Australian Football after playing in a practice match against Hawthorn on the weekend.
The Tigers took a squad of 14 players to Waverley Park for the friendly hit out against the Hawks on Saturday morning, to familiarise players and coaches with the rules and format of the new, fast-paced version of the game.

X-factor: The players set to light up AFLX
Nathan Schmook
afl.com.au
12 Feb 2018
RICHMOND
Callum Moore: The athletic forward has the mix of speed and aerial ability to make his mark on AFLX. With two games to his name, the 21-year-old has been developing quietly in the VFL in his first two seasons, but he is making a case this pre-season to step up in 2018 as a second tall forward. In a format that will reward quick players who can also compete in the air, the Tigers believe Moore will be their secret weapon in an under-23 line-up.
Definite starters: Shai Bolton, Nathan Broad, Dan Butler, Jason Castagna, Callum Moore
Definite outs: Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt, Daniel Rioli

Tigers to test department of youth in AFLX
Jennifer Phelan
afl.com.au
Feb 13, 2018
RICHMOND will join the ranks of those using AFLX to get a look at their team's youth, with the Tigers' big guns to give Saturday's tournament in Sydney a miss.
Captain Trent Cotchin, Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin and All Australian captain Alex Rance are confirmed omissions from the Tigers' squad, which will be named on Wednesday.
Forward Jack Riewoldt is also expected to sit out, as is Shaun Hampson, who has had a heavily managed pre-season because of his back issues, and Daniel Rioli, who is still rehabilitating the foot he broke in the Grand Final.
Assistant coach Ben Rutten said the team wasn't finalised but would be structured around the expected explosive pace of the brand-new concept.
"We'll pick the team that we think is firstly going to suit that style of play, although we haven't seen it so we're not sure what type of players [to pick]," Rutten said.
"Also, it will be some of the guys who have had pretty good pre-seasons, we want to look to see a bit more competitive nature in them.
"At this stage, we're not going to be sending [Trent] Cotchin, [Alex] Rance and [Dustin] Martin up there, but the players that we're going to send up are going to have a real crack and (are) looking to put themselves on show, because we've got important pre-season games coming up."
The Tigers have experimented with the new format recently, starting with a friendly practice match against Hawthorn last weekend at Waverley.
They've also painted a rectangular playing field on Punt Road to further enhance their familiarity with the boundaries.
The Tigers are in a pool with Greater Western Sydney, Sydney, Brisbane, the Western Bulldogs and Gold Coast, and will face the Giants and Lions in the pool matches.
Their tournament will be played at Sydney's Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon/evening.
Assistant coach Justin Leppitsch and development coach Xavier Clarke will take the reins of the side for the competition.
Rutten said the Tigers were looking for their younger players to stand up in AFLX and the upcoming JLT Community Series to put pressure on the seasoned players for selection in the home-and-away games.
"We're always looking for improvement and it's going to come from guys like Jack Graham, who we saw at the end of last year," he said.
"He came off no pre-season last year so he's starting to look like a different player shape-wise, he's really fit, so we're looking for him to continue to grow.
"Corey Ellis, Connor Menadue, Oleg Markov, Jayden Short … that continuing improvement from the younger guys will keep putting the pressure on the guys in the team, which is how you're going to get the growth.
"We're just looking to continually grow and improve and execute the best we can, and we've got a few good opportunities to show that in the JLT and AFLX next week as well where we'll look to build our season."

Leppa talking about AFLX on SEN:
The former Brisbane Lions mentor will coach the Tigers in the upcoming AFLX competition, and while he admitted to having “no idea” how to teach the concept, he expects teams to try and kick plenty of “Zooper goals”, which are worth ten points from outside 40 metres.
“A zooper goal is worth ten points and a goal is worth six. You might see a lot of strategizing to get as many ten pointers as you can, because it is such a limited timeframe,” Leppitsch said.
“Look out for a fair bit of kicking backwards in a few games to kick as many ten pointers as possible.”

Going by the three squads, Brisbane are taking this the most seriously and we're the ones taking it the least. No surprise ours is made up of newbies and fringe players. This will just be a chance for some of our boys to get some 'gametime' runs into their legs before the season starts. The main thing is no injuries [touchwood] :pray.

More from Leppa:
Richmond assistant coach Justin Leppitsch has explained the philosophy behind the selection of the Tigers’ 15-man squad for their AFLX tournament matches at Sydney’s Allianz Stadium this Saturday.
There are just three members of Richmond’s 2017 premiership side in the squad, with a combined total of 261 senior league games among the group.
“We’ve got a (JLT series) game in seven days’ time (v Essendon at Wangaratta) that we’re very conscious about . . . a pre-season trial, which is very important now that you’ve only got two of them. We have to travel to Sydney (for the AFLX tournament) as well. So we’re conscious of all those things,” Leppitsch said.
“But I think everyone that’s going out there is probably playing for a reason . . . the couple of premiership boys, the young ones, that we’re bringing up there for a bit of leadership to try and drive the group.
“There’s some players that weren’t regulars last year, with (Corey) Ellis, (Reece) Conca, (Sam) Lloyd and guys like that, who could really show some early signs . . .
“And, obviously, the blend of youth as well.
“So there’s a few different reasons why you pick the squad that’s going up there for us.”
Leppitsch, who will coach the Tigers in the inaugural AFLX tournament, admitted there was a significant unknown factor attached to the whole concept.
“We had a little scratch match with Hawthorn a couple of weeks ago and that was our first crack at it. And we had another 10 minutes after our training session last Saturday. So we’ve done a little bit . . . enough to sort of understand it,” Leppitsch said.
“If you were preparing for a proper season of AFLX you’d say we’re very under-prepared, but just enough not to break too many rules . . .
“It’s new to everybody, so we’re all kind of guessing on what to do.
“I think the only thing we all know is a super goal, or a Zooper goal (from outside 40 metres), is worth 10 points and a goal’s worth six. So you might see a lot of strategising to try and get as many 10-pointers as you can because there really is a limited time-frame.
“When you’ve only got two 10-minute halves, you’ve really got to try and maximise your scoring.
“So look out for a fair bit of kicking backwards in a few games to try and score as many ‘tens’ as possible.”
Richmond will play Greater Western Sydney at 4.10pm on Saturday followed by Brisbane at 5.06pm.
The winner of the Tigers’ Pool A will then play the winner of Pool B (Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast) in the grand final at 7.03pm that evening.

Watching it tonight, AFLX would be a good game for kids to learn the basic foot and hand skills of footy as well as for light-hearted social games between friends and workmates. However, at the professional level it's bruise free footy. There's no pressure, contests, tackling or even speckies.
-
Pretty boring to watch.
I assume the AFL has introduced this to try and utilise soccer ovals, thereby taking away from the round ball code.
-

I assume the AFL has introduced this to try and utilise soccer ovals, thereby taking away from the round ball code.
There's more rectangular fields in non-traditional Aussie Rules states of NSW & Qld, so AFLX allows the AFL to use them. It won't have any impact on Soccer as, due to its participation growth, it also needs more rectangular fields.
The other thing AFLX does is it creates more AFL content for TV = more $$$ for next TV rights.
-
I didn't mind it. I watched the final. Our young guys should be pretty suited to this format.
-
It's the Aussie Rules equivalent of Rugby Sevens.....but even crappier......so not really equivalent at all I suppose....
I always thought this was better as a pre-season concept....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_AFL_Lightning_Premiership
.....that was at least on a proper footy ground with 18 players on the field and closer to actual footy...

Think they need to incorporate a Harry Potter style Quidditch small circular target or similar (a vertical basketball net maybe) so that it introduces a more difficult scoring option with bigger reward. The game as it stands removes everything the avid AFL follower enjoys, bone crunching tackles, high marking and the opportunity to celebrate goals. Essentially its like watch two teams running through training drills, no real atmosphere and to be honest have found it a bit of a snorefest so far, others may disagree.
-
I went last night
Too easy to score and zero atmosphere
They know that, hence the need for a crappy commentator

You're right it does remove everything, which is great as everybody always bunnies (including me) when there is the slightest chance of a player getting injured and possibly missing round one.
I for one want it to stay as it is absolutely important that players get pre season match practice.
Players get injured during training, the JLT series and intraclub matches as well which are all designed to condition players for the up and coming season.
This set up is good for practice and builds up a lot of endurance testing for players who thought they were fit and after playing, know that they have more work to do.
If this game of foot basketball/hand soccer (I hate basketball, so stuffing repetitious and soccer is just, well I'd rather watch snails eat grass) keeps the players safe and provides good match conditioning then bring it on.

Zooper goals: Conca, Castagna, Balta, Moore
Goals: Castagna 2, Stengle
-
Only AFL X but I still hate losing.
The last touch out of bounds rule penalised us for all our smothers and blocks :thumbsdown. They should make a rule in AFLX that you gain possession from smothers that go out of bounds.
Anyway that last touch rule thankfully doesn't exist in the real stuff under proper rules where you get rewarded for those pressure acts.
Like the look of Balta already..... :shh
Can hoof a footy :o.
-
We need GWS to beat Brisbane for us to make today's Grand Final.

Brisbane beat the Giants who gave up in the last 5 mins once they couldn't win by 5 goals. So that's all folks. On to the preseason games.

Brisbane won it.
When the wooden spooners win preseason trophies you know how serious (or rather not) the rest of the teams were taking it :yep.

Can't believe we lost
Where is the sack Hardwick thread?
Dimma had the day off. So we need a sack Leppa thread ;D.
No
Dimmas fault. Everyone knows Leppa can't coach.

Well we lost a game to Brisbane for the first time in about 9 years so perhaps all heads should roll. I hear the 'focus on footy' rebel group is planning another board takeover as we speak ;D.

Looked like defensive pressure is still a high priority, if not higher, even in this silly format and the new kids all seemed more than on board with it..... :clapping
Balta & Moore both looked exciting....Balta's early spoil v GWS was very Rance -like... :shh....looked equally comfortable at both ends too...Higgins looks a good kick and decision maker the two times I noticed him, Eggs didn't do too much wrong without really standing out...Baker looks bit iffy but a goer.....hard to judge them after 20 minutes of hit & giggle though... Short & Broad looked the best of the "old" players...Butler's body still moving faster than his brain...Castagna still very ..."enigmatic"....Lloyd...meh...
I increasingly look forward to the day Conca is no longer on our list...almost as much as I look forward to the day Channel 7 loses the AFL broadcasting rights again....
The concept itself is a joke at this level, leave it for foreigners and kids from the northern states....

Brisbane's future is bright, their kids were great. Rich, Bell, Bewick, Christensen... all looked super impressive

From the Herald-Sun website:
Leppitsch said the players enjoyed the experience of playing the new game, as did the coaches, who were content there were fewer collisions, which meant no injuries across their two matches.
“When you are putting your players up and handing them to the AFL for experiments, you want to make sure they come back in one piece,” he said.
He said there was always room for further improvements with AFLX, and joked that the field could even be carved up a bit more like a dart board, for extra scoring opportunities.
X-FACTOR
Jason Castagna
Leaving aside Mitch Robinson’s matchwinning Zooper goal, Castagna turned in the best passage of the day with his brilliant goal against the Lions. Twice he tapped the ball around the boundary, and then launched with a flying soccer kick for goal.
TIME TO SHINE
Reece Conca
A fully-fit Conca would be a bonus for the Tigers headed into their premiership defence. The injury-prone runner wasted no time staking his claim with the first Zooper goal of the opening game and showed enough in both matches to suggest that if his body holds out, his speed and penetrating kicking will again be an asset.
STEPPING UP
Jayden Short
Short was stiff to lose his spot late last year and looked just as stiff when he was “disallowed” a Zooper goal during the first game. Thankfully, sanity prevailed, and the mistake was corrected. Looked sharp as he worked to regain his position in the side.
NEW FACES
Noah Balta
This kid might be the ‘bolter’ from the blue. The athletic 18-year-old key-position Tiger, who was pick 25 in last year’s draft, took a couple of strong grabs and hit the scoreboard. Looked a nice prospect who could be used at either end.
LOOK WHO’S BACK
Nathan Broad
The Tigers gave their premiership defender plenty of game time in both matches, mindful of his club-imposed three-game suspension. He did plenty of running from the back half.
SUPERCOACH WATCH
Jack Higgins ($130,800 mid/fwd)
The Tigers’ first draft pick (No. 17 overall) only had limited game time in the first game, but showed glimpses of his talent. It’s impossible to leave him out of your SuperCoach team at the price. May not be picked for Round 1 but shouldn’t have to wait long for his opportunity. Looks as good a cash cow as the Sunrise version.

Don't forget Mitch 'celebrate an AFLX zooper goal like you've won the premiership' Robinson either.

:banghead :banghead :banghead
When will Hardwick and co effing learn???!! This high pressure gameplan is just NO GOOD for AFLX.
Another premiership goes begging.

“When you are putting your players up and handing them to the AFL for experiments, you want to make sure they come back in one piece,” Leppitsch said.
Yep. The main thing is we walked away with no injuries.
He said there was always room for further improvements with AFLX, and joked that the field could even be carved up a bit more like a dart board, for extra scoring opportunities.
The last touch out of bounds rule doesn't work for smothers. Penalises the team/player for good play while rewards the other team/player for poor play. We got screwed by it about half a dozen times in the Brisbane game where we'd do well to smother a Lion's kick and they'd get given the ball back to set up a shot at goal :P. They need to tweak rule so that the player who smothers the ball is rewarded with possession if ball goes out of bounds.
The bit in bold is something that sadly for Reece has never happened in his AFL career. Even if his body did hold up now, he would pretty much be fighting for Broad's spot in the senior side amongst a host of other teammates.

Jack Higgins (FWD/MID, $238,000) was solid against GWS with seven possessions and remains in the mix if he can break into the premier's round one line up, which sounds unlikely at this stage.

AFLX full wrap: How did your club go?
afl.com.au
Feb 19, 2018 12:55PM
RICHMOND
Game 1: Richmond 3.2.7 (49) def GWS 2.2.2 (34)
Game 2: Brisbane 4.3.8 (66) def Richmond 4.3.3 (61)
The premiers continued their winning ways with a first-up victory but couldn't repeat their efforts to make another Grand Final. Flag heroes Dan Butler and Jason Castagna were dangerous forwards for the Tigers, while Nathan Broad was a dasher in defence. Forgotten forwards Sam Lloyd and Reece Conca used the tournament to kickstart the season with both players finding plenty of the ball, with Jayden Short prominent with his pace, and youngster Noah Balta an influential big man. Jack Higgins showed glimpses of the talent that made him the club's No.1 draft pick, with both Derek Eggmolesse-Smith and Tyson Stengle also bringing some flash to the day.
