No shortages of clubs chasing Richmond midfielder Anthony Miles in trade period

October 12, 2017

FOX SPORTS

ANTHONY Miles is almost certain to be traded next week with Richmond refusing to budge on its one-year offer for the inside midfielder.

Foxfooty.com.au understands Miles has attracted interest from several clubs this trade period and is keen for more senior opportunities after managing just five AFL games this year.

Although the Tigers want to retain him for 2018, it’s understood the club is resigned to him leaving for greener pastures on a longer term deal.

Miles has been linked to a plethora of rival clubs, including Gold Coast, Brisbane, Geelong, Carlton and Adelaide, but where he ends up largely depends on trades struck over the next few days.

Industry oberservers have suggested Miles would be worth a third-round selection.

Like many other players in limbo, Miles needs a variety of bigger name dominoes to fall before his name reaches the top of the trade discussion.

Miles was a victim of Richmond’s success this year, struggling to hold his spot in Damien Hardwick’s senior team due to the club’s remarkably sparse injury list, as well as the recruitment of Dion Prestia and Josh Caddy. This was despite the midfielder finishing fourth and sixth in the club’s 2015 and 2016 best and fairest counts respectively.

As a proven AFL performer who has had little trouble with injuries, there are no shortage of suiters for Miles, but its believed he will not find a new home until the last few days — if not hours — of the trade period, which concludes next Thursday at 2pm.

Miles was one of Richmond’s best performers at VFL level this season, averaging 32 disposals and eight clearances per outing to finish fifth in the JJ Liston Trophy count.

Miles played 10 games for GWS before he was delisted and taken as a rookie by the Tigers ahead of the 2014 season. He has played a further 60 matches for Richmond across the last four seasons.

If Jarman Impey can get pick 33 , surely Miles can attract a second rounder....especially if multiple clubs are chasing him....

Third rounder is a rip off - he's worth more. Although it's definitely an upgrade from the rookie pick we used on him

Miles' manager Marty Pask was on Trade Radio this arvo.

Pask on Anthony Miles: He's been offered a contract by Richmond, so he's not 100% leaving.

Pask on Miles: We'll have a better understanding next week on him. He's prepared to move if the opportunities for him are greater elsewhere.

Anthony Miles trade latest, AFL trade news: Richmond inside midfielder ‘50-50’ to stay at premiers

October 16, 2017 2:24pm
FOX SPORTS

ANTHONY Miles is a 50-50 proposition of staying at Richmond in 2018, according to his manager Marty Pask.

The midfielder is looking for greater opportunities at AFL level having played just five games in the Tigers’ 2017 premiership campaign. That came despite finished fourth and sixth in the club’s 2015 and 2016 best and fairest counts respectively.

Richmond does want to retain Miles and has offered the inside midfielder a one-year contract, as reported by Foxfooty.com.au last week.

But Miles is receiving interest from other clubs, having been linked to Gold Coast, Brisbane, Geelong, Carlton and Adelaide, and is keen to move if he can find a spot in a best 22.

“To be honest, it’s 50/50,” Pask said on AFL Trade Radio.

“There has again been some talk over the weekend, and again this morning. But again, we’re working through all that with Richmond and I don’t think it’s a situation where he can’t return (to the Tigers).

“It’s certainly been pretty amicable and clear if there was a better position for you than the one you find yourself in, we’re not going to hold you back. But at the same time, we love you, you won our reserves’ best and fairest, which says a lot about your character as well.

“I think all that plays in to the fact that he’s probably only one player out of the side at the moment.”

However Miles is happy to return to the Tigers if he cannot find interest elsewhere and with the end of the trade period at 2pm on Thursday, he may be forced to stay.

“Has there been interest from other clubs? Yes. Is that interest affirmed in the sense that I can categorically say that we’re dealing with that club exclusively? Not yet,” Pask said.

“We’re just having to wait for a few things to work out. Thursday’s deadline is fast approaching, so things would have to ramp up pretty quickly in the next 48 hours to really find the appropriate club for him to get to.

“It’s all very well to move, but are you moving for a better situation than the one you’ve currently got?

“We need to be 100 per cent comfortable in that, I don’t want him to move and certainly speaking to him, he’s not moving to be a depth player.”

Miles searching for greater opportunity

Miles was drafted through GWS’ zoning concessions but managed just 10 games in his two years at the club before joining Richmond through the rookie draft. Though he managed just the five games for the premiers this year after the off-season additions of Josh Caddy and Dion Prestia, he was never far out of the team and diligently won Richmond’s VFL best and Fairest this year. Miles played 42 games in 2015 and 2016 and finished 4th and 6th in the Jack Dyer Medal.

Richmond has tabled a one year offer to Miles, which he’s put on the back burner as he looks for greater opportunity at another club. Richmond is happy for him to return to the club in 2018 but will not stand in his way if he wants to move elsewhere. His manager has stated that he’s currently 50-50 to return to the Tigers. If he does remain at the club he’ll need to add another string to his bow, being too one dimensional is the knock on him. His lack of speed didn’t fit with Richmond’s game plan this year so he’ll have to correct that.

PLAYER TRADE VALUE: Third-round pick.

POSSIBLE DESTINATIONS:
While he feelers are out there gauging interest in Miles, he’s yet to enter serious discussions with any club. Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Gold Coast are reportedly interested in adding the competitive midfielder to their list to fill a need. North Melbourne are beginning a rebuild and are looking to add midfield depth after their pursuit of Dustin Martin and Josh Kelly failed this year. Despite the stunning season from Tom Mitchell at Hawthorn, the club is severely lacking midfielders and could do with another strong body on their list. Gold Coast lost Jaeger O’Meara and Dion Prestia last year and are likely to lose Gary Ablett Jr this year so could certainly do with a player like Miles. The fate of Bryce Gibbs will likely determine how closely Carlton and Adelaide will look at the midfielder.

MOST LIKELY DESTINATION: At this stage, there are too many teams in play and too many dominoes yet to fall to make a call on which club – if any – wins Miles’ signature. If a deal is to get done, it will likely be around lunchtime on Thursday, in the final frenzy before the trade period closes.

Well stuff me drunk....
Geelong get pick 19 compo for Motlop
Melbourne get pick 31 for Watts
And here we have a quality inside mid pushed out by the recruitment of Caddy, Prestia and he's worth a third rounder.

He will thrive wherever he goes

Let's face it, this compensation idea is garbage.

The AFL brought in free agency, so make it free agency. Why is compensation involved?

Can't think of why else it exists.

If we have to have compensation, why doesn't the club signing the player pay it?

Isn't it convenient? Now Geelong have a pick to satisfy GC for Ablett - whether it's their first or this compensation pick. Gotta love the afl and their constant convenient rulings that have no consistency.

Players wanted FA like other sports but players want FA on their terms

For it to work (and am totally against FA BTW)

The morons at HQ need to :
* turf out these ridiculous comp picks

* allow clubs to trade players to whichever club they chose. Players have no say. That's how it works in other international sports. that some kid 3 years into the system can say  I want tbe traded but I'll only go to club A is pathetic. Just like this Stringer situation; Dogs are within their rights to get the best possible deal, not bow to the demands to said palyer

Why is it WP that c/d grade players rarely request a trade citing homesickness or demand a club like stringer has.

True to a point.

But this deal underlines what I feel about the compensation aspect of FA. It is a joke.

I reckon I hear that this year is a weak draft but the next one is great every year. We addressed weaknesses last year. Bombers have done nothing to address their lack of inside depth. They’ve just gone scattergun. Same with Port. Melbourne are the only ones who have added anything.

Lame trade period in general.

I'm thinking the Dogs last year and moreso with us this year has shown you don't need 22 top 20 picks to win a flag. Surround a handfull of jets with some really solid role players and you're in the window. Means clubs are valuing high picks less and good established players more. The Lever trade looking decent when all said and done.

Three elimination final exits by us showed me that flashy outside footy during the season doesn’t mean squat come September. Can’t see where Bombers have done anything to fix where a team like Sydney will pull their pants down again when it matters and the pressure is turned up to 11. Outside of Merrett they have no one to do the heavy lifting, even more so now with Watson retired.
