What happened ?? Played some pretty decent footy this season where he played 16 games.
Is this the end for the "smallish" back pocket player . Have they been replaced by hybrid types like Grimes and Broad who can play both tall and small ??
Thoughts ??

Yeah poor guy. Feel for him.

Was it, in effect, Broad who took his place?

Yes. Broad had a better defensive aspect to his game and a bigger body. Short was a much better kick and far more attacking but smaller.

Short needs to get a lot better defensively, he is in the same boat as LLOYD and Miles.
-
Isn't Broad able to play talls and smalls?
From memory Short wasn't impacting enough with his disposal to make up for his lack of defensive flexibility
-
Very simply
They decided to go with an extra tall down back
And Broad was it

Agree with Jackstar.
Really Broad has replaced Batchelor with more pace, the big flaw in Batchelor's game.
Think moving Ellis back from the wing has been the move taking Short's spot.
Would personally like to see next year, Ellis back to wing, Houli to half back and Short as back pocket.
Broad and Markov may be fighting for that medium back spot but Broad has it right now.

I thought Ellis was good down back for the most part this season. Saw him run back with the flight a few times, something unheard of this time last year

Short got caught out for being just that... too short. Sure you can have a few short players in the backline but as everyone else has said, when you have flexible players like Broad, Grimes and even McIntosh it makes it hard. Think Short got dropped after a few games where his disposal really dropped off too...
-
Better forward... :shh

Short's form dropped away from earlier on in the season. Poor options and/or poor kicks off half-back lead to too many bad turnovers. His VFL form wasn't that great either from the games I saw.
