Signed up weeks ago, expecting a delivery in the next couple of weeks.
Had to make sure I didn't give up my spot in the MRC.

I'm thinking about a couple inner sanctum memberships this year, do you know if the memberships are "transferable"? Wouldn't mind taking someone other than my wife from time to time.

I thought youd made a typo Wayne when I saw 67k, but I just went on to the club site and its 67,007 members. The club
is absolutely flying. 100,000 here we come. Its a long way from the days when there were only 15,000 of us and the club
was desperate for members. The Tigers are an absolute juggernaut.

Apparently, at Hawthorn's AGM, Kennett said they have exactly 60,000 signed up.

So we're 6000 ahead :thumbsup.

I doubt we will get 100k

Only because all the reserve seating packages are just about sold out as well

Some folks maybe put off by having a membership that doesn't guarantee access to home games

Richmond membership record 2018: Premiership Tigers set to eclipse 90,000 members next season

CHRIS CAVANAGH,
Herald Sun
23 December 2017

RICHMOND is on track to smash the AFL club membership record with an unprecedented 70,000 supporters having already signed on for 2018.

With 88 days still remaining before Round 1, the Tigers yesterday (on Saturday) became the first club to ever reach 70,000 members before Christmas.

Indeed, the Tiger Army has spoken with its collective wallet. Picture: Tim Carrafa

The tally — which comes on the back of a 37-year premiership drought being broken in September — marks a rise of more than 30 per cent on the 52,401 members the club had this time last year.

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale said the demand for memberships was showing no signs of slowing down as the club looks to become the first to pass 80,000 members.

Collingwood currently holds the membership record, the Magpies having boasted 79,347 members in 2014.

“The loyalty of the Tiger army is unrivalled across the AFL,” Gale said.

“To reach 70,000 members before Christmas is unprecedented and a reflection of the passion and size of our supporter base.

Rise of the Tiger Army

Year   Membership numbers
2010   35,960
2011   40,184
2012   53,027
2013   60,321
2014   66,122
2015   70,809
2016   72,278
2017   72,669

“Our membership department will be working tirelessly over the next couple of months to ensure that number continues to grow.

“With such strong numbers, there is no reason why we shouldn’t be aiming to be the first club to reach 90,000 members.”

The Tigers finished this year with 72,669 members, placing them third in the overall standings behind Collingwood (75,879) and Hawthorn (75,663).

However, they recorded the biggest home-and-away attendance of any club and had an average home crowd of 55,958 from 11 games.

Richmond’s three MCG finals were played in front of average crowds of 96,436 with 100,021 attending the 48-point Grand Final win over Adelaide.

“Our players have often commented on the atmosphere at the MCG throughout the finals series, and the whole season for that matter,” Gale said.

“It was remarkable and the support of our members is never taken for granted.”

Essendon — which finished this year with 67,768 members — has also experienced a surge in sign-ups, with more than 52,000 fans already on board for next season, up on 45,536 this time last year.

In all seriousness if the club gets to 90,000 will the club close off memberships? Will they let it run towards 100,000 members?
At some point the club needs to develop a membership package without access to games, but with voting rights and equal rights,
to the rest of us. What the membership looks like otherwise, I don't know, maybe access to Foxtel, a video replay on the Richmond
FC site, but the numbers at the moment are extraordinary & unlike others who have rich benefactors buying thousands of memberships on there own, we have real people buying real memberships.

There are non-access memberships already for interstate & country members who obviously can't make it to a game.

It all depends on how many of the 90k would be 11 home game access members? At this stage, we would like all AFL clubs have a significant chunk of our membership base with <11 game exotic memberships. We're not at the EPL stage where it's hard to get a ticket unless you have a season ticket. It's really only the blockbusters that are currently a reserved seating issue in the AFL.

If it gets to the stage where our supporters could fill the 'G every home game aside from the MCC & AFL member areas, then we'd probably do what Essendon did at Docklands and make all access membership come with reserved seating. We could also do what Geelong do at Kardinia Park and give stuff all seat allocation to away supporters. It would be like the GWS Prelim Final every home game  ;D. You would then also have to have a system where access members need to confirm their attendance midweek prior to each match, so you can pass on unused seats to non-access members (perhaps on a waiting list for access) who want to go to a game.

We shouldn't have a problem getting to 100k now. We sold another 25k from this point last year. But we're selling better this time. Another 30k should be a breeze :D

What the membership looks like otherwise, I don't know, maybe access to Foxtel, a video replay on the Richmond FC site, but the numbers at the moment are extraordinary & unlike others who have rich benefactors buying thousands of memberships on there own, we have real people buying real memberships.

Despite winning the flag, it's still a massive ask to expect to 33% increase in memberships in one year. It all depends on how many of the current 70k are newbies compared to existing members who have rejoined (especially auto rollovers) early before Xmas?

After the AFL audit they had only 56k in 2017 (not 81k) after 54k in 2016.

Once the afl audit the figures theyll drop the email registrations that are counted as memberships and their total will drop by about 25k again. Seriously, cllubs used to take the pee a bit when they counted non matchday access memberships to the total amount but at least those memberships were still $$$, the crows are adding email registrations that give you 10% off their merchandise as memberships  :whistle

LOL. So they are pretenders off as well as on field :yep.

If we did that we'd have 150k  ;D. I remember Benny Gale saying at a fan forum after he became our CEO that we had over 100k names on our membership register despite our membership tally at the time being only half of what it is now.

Question for anyone out there in the know.

The darls family tried to organise a membership for this year for her cousin and they were apparently told that they couldn't sign him up and he had to go on some sort of waiting list? Before I email the club a scathing blast, can anyone confirm if this might be the case and how this has happened?

Cheers  :thumbsup

Depends on what they were trying to buy

Certain membership cateogories have sold out

My understanding is that all reserve seating categories are sold out. If you check out the membership website and sold out signs are everywhere

For GF ticket guarantee there are only 2 coterie memberships (Inner Sanctum & RFC Executive) available. Cheapest one is IS @ $2400

You can certainly buy standard 11 game or 17 game memberships

The following categories now have waiting lists

MRC
3131
All reserved seat categories

How's it happened? Easily winning a flag contributes. FWIW 3121 & MRC have had waiting lists now for at least 3 seasons

This is a bit concerning. Membership seems to have stalled. We should have a tleast 80,000 members this year and that should have been the minimum after a premiership year. It would be good to know how many of last years members haven't renewed yet. That would give us an indication. I have to say if we end up under 80,000 I think it would have to be considered a failure. I think the merchandise issues may be playing a part as there a lot of disappointed people who purchased stuff and waited a long time to get it or maybe they still haven't got their stuff yet.

Also the club needs to consider trying to expand into another area of Melbourne. The membership drive which focused us on the eastern corridor, through Beaconsfield etc was a good move, but we should try and nail another geographic region of Melbourne, like Bayside.

Bayside is rife, Its traditionally been a Saints area, but they have been a rabble for a long time, Going from Moorabbin all the way to Mentone, Parkdale, Mordialloc including areas like Brighton Brighton East Hampton Hampton East Highett Sandringham Beaumaris, Black Rock that seems like a great area, lots of junior clubs like Hampton Rovers and the Sandringham Dragons. I know theres a lot of people around the Highett area who barrack for Richmond, I live next door to the son of former Richmond Premiership Player here in Highett. Its full of young families and kids who could be swayed over a period of time. I haven't seen any AFL club doing much in this areas, Richmond should pounce.

Richmond should increase its scope of activity.

Mentone here and I reckon I see more Richmond stickers on cars than anything else. In fact I think I see more Hawks and Dees here than Saints. To be honest I hardly see any Saints support at all. They've lost the zone.

Agree Mentone and Parkdale should also be in the list of targeted areas. St Kilda has lost the zone, no one is working it from what I can see, its a high income, high disposable income zone, Richmond should come in here and start developing a big presence. I think real rewards could emerge for the club over time if it does.

Our membership slogan for this year is "THE HUNT IS ON".

We're aiming for 90k members.

Great commercial ad by the club. One of our better efforts IMHO. 90,000 is a good target, less than 19,000 to go. Considering the 95,000 crowds we were getting in the finals, I think its possible.

Richmond has declared ‘The Hunt is On’ in 2018, as the Tigers launch their membership campaign ahead of the upcoming AFL season.

The Club launched its new membership campaign that will feature a series of short videos that narrate the similarities between tigers of the animal kingdom, and the Richmond team and its supporters.

The video documents and observes fierce tigers in the wild, Richmond’s fighting and relentless spirit, along with the Club’s loyal and united army of supporters.

“Our members and supporters are a powerful force of this football club,” Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said.

“The Tiger Army have been with us on a great journey for a long time, and we were all able to celebrate together last year during our finals campaign and premiership win.”

The Club is aiming to reach an AFL membership record of 90,000 members in 2018.

“We know it’s a big membership target, but we want as many of our fans as possible to be with us on this journey - it really is something special to be part of the Richmond Football Club.”

The 2018 home and away season is still over a month away, but that hasn't stopped the Richmond train from rolling on.

Official AFL data showed the Tigers breaking their membership record once again in 2017, recording 72,699 members for the year.

This year? They've already caught it.

Numbers published on Richmond's website have them clocking in at 74,699 members, already more than they've ever recorded.

It leaves them poised to break the all-time AFL record, held by Collingwood, who recorded 79,347 members in 2014.

Richmond president Peggy O'Neal has said the club is hunting for a whopping - and unprecedented - 90,000 members in 2018.

"Clearly the success this season is going to drive a significant off-field result, some of which will flow into next year's financial figures," she told News Corp last year.

"We also expect this season will fuel next year, and there is no reason why we shouldn't be aiming to be the first club through 90,000 members."

Richmond's membership by year:

2010: 35,960

2011: 47,655

2012: 53,027

2013: 60,321

2014: 66,122

2015: 70,809

2016: 72,278

2017: 72,669

2018: 74,699*

Wow, that is ridiculous. I thought I was an orphan waiting until late January to get my stuff, but seriously, if you still haven't got yours then I think you are totally justified.

I don't think it is fair that it cost you a 3121 membership however. I think you should write to Peggy or Brendan and explain what has happened and ask for them to reinstate your membership when/if you decide to join back up.

Richmond’s hunt for 90,000 members in 2018 has been given a boost, with the Club breaking its membership record today.

Ticking over to 75,803 members this morning, the Tigers surged past its previous record of 75,777 achieved at the end of Richmond’s 2017 finals campaign, making it the eighth consecutive year the Club has achieved record membership.

Richmond CEO, Brendon Gale said it was exciting to achieve the record early in the year.

“The power and passion of the Tiger Army is something special, and it’s really exciting to have record-breaking members with us as we head into the start of a new season.”

CEO Gale explains ‘all-time’ interest in Richmond

By SEN
21 Feb 2018

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale has given some insight into how the club has again broken its own membership record.

On the back of their drought-breaking premiership triumph in 2017, the Tigers have crashed through their previous membership ceiling of 75,777.

For the eighth year in a row, the Tiger Army has voted with their feet by buying in and showing their loyalty, prompting Gale to explain why on SEN Afternoons.

“(It’s) not so much the number, I think it’s the underlying relationship with the club and its members,” he said.

“What it tells me that our members, and I know this because there’s evidence in an AFL membership satisfaction research survey, we have about 7,000 respondents every year.

“Our members are highly engaged and there’s high trust.

“By and large, their experience matches expectation. If you get those things right, the number takes care of itself.

“It’s the engagement, the strength of the connection, the trust and the buy-in.”

Adding further to Richmond’s off-field success, Head of Marketing Ben Jenkins said: “The interest in the club is at an all-time high.

“In terms of the numbers, they are going really well. We did announce this morning that we’ve broken the all-time club membership record for the eighth consecutive year, which is huge.

“Never this early though. We’ve just pushed through 75,777 which is a credit to everyone involved at the club – from the players, coaches and on-field success last year – but everyone that’s worked off the field so hard to create the momentum and connection between the club and the fans.”

The club has really got to make it their key project to be able to sell memberships instantly, remotely.
We've had camps on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Bendigo and Echuca.
We've had the Cup Tour all over the place.
And we've had a practice match in Wangaratta, which I think has been the reason behind the current spike in sales.

I know people can buy via the website but I just think it's better to get them while they're emotional.
Everyone buys with a credit card nowadays so surely all it would take would be a card reader and an employee with an ipad entering details direct to the member database.
(and a bloody big sign saying "Membership on sale here")

I think a lot of these memberships now are coming from new members because the rollover of "committed tigers" was done a while ago.
With all reserved seats sold out these people are not really expecting to come to every game.
That's where the cream on top is to get to 90,000. They just want to be a part of the "hunting party".

We have heard all about Sheedy and McChins getting lots of Pie and Don fans signed up interstate, particularly in Queensland and NT.
Those people aren't planning on going to regular games in Melbourne, they just want to be part of the mob.
I think we are currently much stronger than any other club and should leverage it.

If we do go back-to-back we could add another 5 to 10,000 again on top of this year.
Make it as easy as possible to join the hunting party.

We are taking the cup to Adelaide for our match there on March 29 - trial card sales there. It's a member function.

Yep, I'm also a Country member.
Perfect for me (and potentially a lot of others).

Support the club.
Watch the big games on TV.
Travel the 200k to Melbourne five times a year to watch the lesser home games against mainly the interstaters.
Avoid having to reserve a seat and there's usually only about 5 or 6 games that fit my criteria (home, non-TV).

With the limit on reserved seating, this IMO is where our growth has got to come from.
The club's existing database of member addresses and attendance should be analysed to inform membership drives like our current one.

Richmond are set to overtake Collingwood and Hawthorn in membership figures this year after last weekend increasing rank-and-file support to more than 76,000.

The Tigers are aiming for 90,000 members this year after a record 72,669 signed up in 2017 to be part of the club’s first premiership since 1980.

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale said: “The power and passion of the Tiger Army is something special, and it’s really exciting to have record-breaking members with us as we head into the start of a new season. We have been advising our fans that the best way to ensure they don’t miss out on the (round one) game is to become a member. Members will get priority access when tickets go on sale.”

No club has ever broken the 80,000 membership barrier. Collingwood, who had 75,879 members last year, went close in 2014 with 79,347. Hawthorn had a record membership last year of 75,663.

Richmond is smashing membership records, with just under 80,000 members already signed up for the 2018 season.

Their 2017 grand final opponent, Adelaide, have the second-most members with 72,096 (as of January). Third is Essendon with 60,389, fourth is Hawthorn with 60,100, while Sydney round out the top five with 50,711.

The two newest expansion clubs have the least members – Gold Coast is trailing the AFL with 7,917, while GWS have over double that with 16,432. Brisbane have the third least members, with 17,114.

The Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne have the least members of Victorian clubs, with neither topping the 32,000 mark as of January 2018.

Cheryl Critchley, Herald Sun:

RICHMOND has roared into 2018 with a record membership and strong reserved seat sales after breaking a 37-year premiership drought.

The Tigers have also sold most of their memberships guaranteeing access to a Grand Final ticket if they make it again. The only remaining option, Inner Sanctum, costs $2200 for adults.

Richmond has already surpassed Collingwood’s previous AFL membership record of 79,347 set in 2014. Today, it had 80,221 members and hopes to top 90,000.

The club’s original reserved seat allocation sold out in January.

A new seat option, Roaming Tiger, allows members to register for a level one Punt Road end seat in bays M1 or M2 before each MCG home game. Unsold seats will be reallocated.

You can sign up as an email member for free. This gives you no game access but you receive 10% on merchandise and get exclusive member only communication from the Club. This i believe is the reason they have large membership numbers.  :snidegrin

Richmond memberships 2018: 90,000 members achievable says Trent Cotchin

March 15, 2018
Sarah Olle
FOX SPORTS

RICHMOND skipper Trent Cotchin believes his club’s “bold goal” of 90,000 members is achievable as the hungry Tigers prepare to embark on their 2018 campaign.

On the back of the club’s drought-breaking 2017 flag, chief executive Brendon Gale has declared there is “no reason” why Richmond shouldn’t aim to be the first AFL club to 90,000 members

A week out from the club’s Round 1 clash against Carlton, more than 82,000 members have already signed up.

But Cotchin, the 2018 Australian Grand Prix AFL ambassador, said there was still plenty of time for the Tiger Army to expand.

“I think our numbers are really good with membership,” Cotchin told foxfooty.com.au.

“It was a bold goal, but certainly achievable.

“We just need everyone to jump on board and for the Tiger members to come to as many games as possible because we love hearing them cheer.

“The finals series last year was a great example of how much support we have and how much they can impact games.”

to jump on board.

The "another 10k" was due to us selling memberships beyond the official cut-off date (July 31 IIRC). The AFL's audit had a final tally for us of 72k which is where I got the "a further 7k after round 1" from.

Interesting to hear Caro talking on Footy Classified and saying the numbers are huge.
Obviously talking about more than just membership which everyone knows about.

I think that, despite hiccups voiced here, merchandising profits could be in figures not seen before.
The Bulldogs were suggesting their figures after the premiership were around $4M.
Looking around the streets and on media, Richmond would be at least twice as big.

Ramps, the best thing about our support ATM is the amount of kids coming out loud and proud.
Think it's got a huge amount to do with the Dusty aura, the modern day football warrior covered in tatts and bristling with sheer power.

Just hope that Carr continues to keep him under wraps.
(Thinking here about the trailers for the first "Footy Show" of the season where they were promoting Dusty and he was only in the pre-recorded opening segment, taking Sam's car.)

It was great being in the crowd and responding to Bernie Herbert's question of "What did we do?" and responding in unison "we ate'em alive!!!!", thus first creating our now famous catch-cry!!
Just how old are you really Doc?

Do they cap it?

As it stands currently all members cannpt access all home games, so do we need to think about capping it?

The question actually applies to all clubs that have more members than their home ground can cater for

They should cap it at 100,024 - MCC - AFL members.... with some adjustments made for MCC and AFL members who are Richmond members through those avenues.

Don't need to cap it because of general admission memberships. First in, best dressed and not everyone goes every week anyway.

The Eagles cap theirs. Once they reach a certain number of members, you have to join a waiting list called "Waiting in the wings". If there is a fee to join the waiting list, it is minimal.

At least, that was the case when they played out of Subi, but I think it does still apply.

I don't want to sound like a smart arse, but I got both my kids an RFC membership from they day they were born. I did it so that if my brainwashing efforts prevented them from switching to the Eagles or Dockers (we live in WA), they would have that membership if the Tigers ever sold out of memberships, and so that when they were older, they might get to go to a Grand Final. Living in WA I have seen first hand what limited numbers of memberships being available can mean to fans.

My son is now 15 and is a gold member with 15 years continuous membership. When I first got it for him, my mates fairly gave it to me. As if any Victorian club was going to sell out the MCG with memberships they all said. But when I first got it, that membership cost me under $20 for the whole 11 home games. I told all my WA mates about it, and that maybe they should at least get their kids in the waiting queue for Eagles memberships. None did to my knowledge, and their kids now will be waiting well into adulthood to get a membership, if they ever get one.

And my son, on the other hand, got to see his side win a Grandfinal last year.

I knew I had made the right decision when a mate came up to me at a BBQ a few weeks after the grandfinal. Recalling my advice of years before and knowing that my son and I had just seen our team win a flag he said to me "Well played Dad".

I think we need to start selling a different range of memberships
We could have a

Dreamtime Membership - Dreamtime + 3 games
Anzac Eve Membership - Which all ready exists
Season Opener Membership - Access to R1 v Carlton + 3 games
Blockbuster Membership - Access to home games vs Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Hawthorn with Reserved Seating on the Day
Interstate Membership - Home Games vs any 3 of the Interstate Teams
LOLNorf & Other Riff Raff Club Games Membership - Entry to games against Norf, St Kilda, Melbourne, Footscray etc etc.

All these can be on top of the traditional stuff we sell now. As someone said before - Not everyone goes to games, Not everyone
goes to all Home games. I reckon we could get to 120,000 memberships by doing this type of stuff.

We already do, usually starts selling a couple of weeks before the game

Quote
Season Opener Membership - Access to R1 v Carlton + 3 games

Would only work when it is our home game

Quote
Blockbuster Membership - Access to home games vs Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Hawthorn with Reserved Seating on the Day

Again would only work for our home games. Though would question the reserve seat aspect, where would they be? Club already has all the prime reserve seating and it's all sold

My reason for asking about do we cap is because we currently have 87k+ members

We play at a stadium that holds 100,024. Of that 100k, about 45k+ seats are for MCC & AFL members, so those seats are never available. Of our 87k members say 25k-30k (not sure just a rough guess) are reserved seats for our members - people chose not to go and very few of them can be used by other people so those seats are basically not available on match days.

MCC and AFL will require that a certain number of seats are available to the general public other club supporters....

We can offer as many membership categories we like but it's still a concern to me at least that we can not cater for all of our members at every home game

I suppose then a cap should happen. 100,024 is the logical number for the cap and the club can work it out from there, but I will say
its terrific weve come this far, from the days when we had 10,000-12,000 members to this. Its outstanding, who would have thought that one day we would out grow the MCG.

At least, that was the case when they played out of Subi, but I think it does still apply.

West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett revealed that almost 6000 of the Eagles’ In The Wings members had been allocated seats at Optus Stadium after waiting up to 15 years for a membership. But there were still 9000 households on the waiting list and he said they were likely to continue the allocation program into the opening rounds of the season.

He predicted new three-game and five-game memberships to become hot-ticket items as fans looked for more flexibility and said seats with restricted viewing would be sold at lower prices.

Mr Nisbett also expected remaining In The Wings members to be able to buy tickets as part of the 6000-seat daily passes to be made available as well as through the resale program.

“We’ve got a lot of disgruntled people who haven’t been offered seats yet and we’ll probably exhaust our supply before we get to the end of the In The Wings members,” he said. “But there are still opportunities for them, so I hope they stick with us.”

There maybe a need to cap ticketed members but no need to limit actual memberships of the club. Plenty of people living outside Melbourne who cannot get to all 11 home games but still want to be a member.

Just have to build packages with things that they cannot experience live. Like live internet coverage of open training sessions and VFL games only accessible via registered member status. Similar to the firewalls to restrict content like those put up by the HUN

Richmond breaks AFL record as membership hits 90,000

By Melissa Cunningham
The Age
12 April 2018 — 8:28pm

Richmond has become the first AFL club in history to exceed 90,000 members.

On the back of a drought-breaking flag win that sent the Tiger army into overdrive last year, Richmond confirmed late Thursday that they had broken the AFL membership record.

The Tigers easily eclipsed the all-time AFL club membership record of 80,793 members set by Collingwood in 2014.

Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale said more than 20,000 new members had signed on since the grand final last year, bringing the total up to 90,023.

And, at just three weeks into the AFL season, membership could even crack six figures.

“It’s both very humbling and very special to know that the Tiger Army is now 90,000 members strong,” Gale said.

“Our members are in every corner of Australia and support us wherever we travel.”

It is the eighth consecutive year the Tigers have surpassed their own membership benchmark.

Richmond signed a club record of 75,777 members last year while Tigers superstar Dustin Martin also claiming a record-breaking Brownlow Medal victory, polling 36 votes.

More than 90,000 fans attended the Tigers’ season opener against Carlton while another 70,701 flocked to Sunday’s clash with Hawthorn - making it the highest home-and-away crowd ever between the two clubs.

Despite leading the AFL membership ladder last year,  membership at the Magpies has dived significantly this year with only about 65,000 signed members down from 75,879.

AFL figures show Hawthorn are sitting second on the membership ladder with 74,201 signed members down from 75,663 last year, while Essendon are sitting third with 69,818 members up from 67,768 the previous year.

Is this why the Pies are hiding their membership figures?

By Justin Talent
SEN
13 April 2018

Garry Lyon believes that sliding figures are the reason behind Collingwood’s decision to not disclose their membership numbers so far in 2018.

The once-leading club in Victorian club membership figures have had their all-time record of 79,347 in 2014 smashed this season by reigning premiers Richmond, who yesterday ticked over 90,000 members, nearly 15,000 more than their 2017 total.

The Magpies, who also recorded 75,000 members last year, are believed to be currently trailing that figure by approximately 10,000 in 2018 – a number which Lyon believes the club could be too embarrassed to release publicly as it puts their status inside the top four teams in Victoria at risk.

“Apparently the membership figures are not being given out because they have been on a bit of a decline,” the former Melbourne skipper said on SEN Breakfast.

“Are they still one of the big four? They’re fourth at a guess on the membership behind Hawthorn, Richmond and Essendon.

“They’re sliding down the ladder a little bit. They haven’t played finals for four years.

“I reckon it would be (a concern.)”

Collingwood are the only team in the AFL that are yet to make their membership figures public in 2018.

However Lyon expects the numbers to rise back up once the Magpies return to the top eight.

“When your side doesn’t perform well in terms of wins and losses, you’re going to get a drop off in the back half of the year,” he said.

“As soon as they start winning again I’m sure they’ll roar back up the membership table.”

Our [Hawthorn's] membership continues to grow and has now passed 74,000 and is on its way to this year’s target of 80,000. I believe we are second in terms of membership, but a long way behind Richmond who have shot past 90,000 without taking a breath.

The Tigers have well and truly been aroused after 37 years and might become the first club to hit 100,000 members. If so, a remarkable effort, unless of course we at Hawthorn beat them to that magical number!

If they can't get there after 3 flags in a row, they never will.

I think the 3 peat has been underappreciated, it is a magnificent achievement and the fact that their membership is at 70k odd mark speaks volumes of the type of people that follow that club.

Majority of Hawthorn fans I know, and there is plenty of them are there for the good times and drop off like nobody's business when they lose.
Pathetic fan base really

Did their membership survey

Gotta say it's got me nervous and a bit angry and struth it was painful to do

Throws up all these options for different packages but give you no option to simply say "like what ive got, keep as is"

Based on what it showed as suggested packages they are looking at for me to get exactly what i have now would cost me more than double what i pay now  :o

Be very careful RFC,

I was thinking the same, just want what I have now...38 year member better not stuff with me or there will be more than chicken poop

You have to choose an option from a list and then it says would you buy, I just kept selecting NO

Hawthorn's supporters. Without a doubt.
Most Richmond supporters I know or have met are loyal or rusted on, not all but the majority.

Hopefully we are doing everything we possibly can to get to the 100,000 mark right now this year, there's never a better opportunity than right now, less than 10,000 off the mark and we can put pay to the Hawks and the Filth for good. Sign up all the kids, interstate supporters and as many international supporters as possible.

We're over 23k ahead of this time last year:

19/04/2018    90,896
19/04/2017    67,583

We added another 5k from this point in 2017. So we're on target for 96k by the official audited cut-off date (end of July IIRC).

We then added a further 3k past the cut-off date and into late September last year. If we go deep into September again then we could potentially crack 100k.

Be very careful RFC,

I haven't received the survey but a work colleague got it yesterday & we just completed it at work.

After talking to a mate who completed it when it first came out & comparing notes,I believe they have changed the survey completely.

The one we did didn't have any Membership options or $$$ at all, just a dozen or so very generic questions that took less than 5 minutes to complete

Maybe they got some feedback & didn't like what what they heard ?

Yep, the survey I did was very simple with the usual generic questions you always get in a members survey:

How would you rate your support of Richmond?  [choose along a range from latent to hardcore]
Why do you buy a membership? [select from options such as 'connection to the club', 'cheaper game entry', 'be with friends & family', etc]
How many home games and [a separate part for] away games did you attend?

The start of the survey said it would take 15-20 mins but it was over in about 5.

Again imteresting MT

The one i got was totally different

Only really generic question was how would you rate your support of Richmond....

Then it went into all these different typrs of packages  and their cost and would ask from the options which appeals most, youd select and option and the next screen asked would you purchase it and my answer was always no

It took close to 30 minutes to complete it

The survey i got left me with little doubt they are seriously considering making significant changes to "premium" and coterie memberships to cash in. My gut is telling me more categories with the basic extras on offer in their current membership type being pushed up to new more expensive categories

This whole thing got me thinking best to read the fine print on my IS membership this year. Usually dont bother beause i just let it roll over as it never changes.

How wrong was i? Read the list of benefits for season 2018 the other day and it appears that 2 things that have formed part of the package (actually the cornerstone of the package) are now gone but the price went up... following it up but definitely at the moment not happy at all

Crap!! I'm not surprised though
It always seems to find a way to extract more from the loyal contributors in search of more funds and bigger numbers.

It wasn't that long ago when it was thought you were doing well to crack 50k. Goes to show how big our game is when compared to these NRL membership numbers. I'm not sure what sort of deals there are to pump up the GWS numbers (assuming their is as their home crowds don't reflect the numbers that well?) but if they were an NRL club they would be considered to have strong support.

GWS's membership would be split between (Western) Sydney and Canberra. They average crowds of 10k at both their 'home' venues. The Swans are the biggest football club of any code in Sydney based on membership and average crowds. Virtually twice as big as the next which would be the Rabbitohs. It's TV ratings where the NRL overwhelmingly dominates up there.

NRL clubs especially in Sydney have Leagues Clubs to funnel (pok-ies) revenue into their respective NRL clubs. WP would know better than me but I believe clubs like Cronulla who have a low membership also own their own home ground (thus they own a multi-million dollar asset). Add the $$$ from the NRL's TV rights deal and that keeps their clubs afloat rather than their (low) membership bases.

More a watch sport on TV culture up there compared to Melbourne unless there's a one-off 'event' where it's trendy to attend en masse. So State of Origin or Beckham's allstars will sell-out 80k ANZ stadium, yet a top of the table NRL or A-league game will be lucky to draw 15-20k. As you would know dwaino, Victory  :thumbsup has a higher membership and crowds than most NRL clubs. It's the culture of Melbourne (the city) to be a member of your football club (irrespective of the code) and attend regular weekly games.

When I lived in Brisbane everyone I worked with were fanatical Broncos yet never liked the idea of handing over any money to buy a membership or attend a game. They’d rather watch it on TV like you said. That’s the difference between us and them, we’re willing to shell out our own coin for our club. I used to rile them up by saying I wouldn’t pay for such a poxy game either.

According to his Adelaide Advertiser article, Richmond has the #1 membership retention rate in the AFL (>93% of full 11-game members).

PORT Adelaide is winning the battle to make its members “rusted on” with the AFL’s second-best retention rate.

Eclipsed only by the predictable vote of approval from Richmond members after the Tigers ended their AFL premiership drought last year, the Power has rewritten its membership record by having 93 per cent of its full 11-game members re-sign this season.

What are you on about? Taz puts his money where his mouth is which is more than I can say for many so called supporters. No need for being sarcastic when talking about him. That is being unnecessarily rude.
Many here appreciate your footy input as you have good insight into footy matters. However, you are on occasions quite cutting and personal with your comments which detract from many of those good posts you make. I just don't understand why you stray.

Ok got it - never heard of the flexi bit but fair enough

Mid season review was never listed this year. I asked about it and got told wouldn't be happening because

1/ member feedback survey showed people didn't value it highly, like you I was staggered but thats what i got told

2/ IS numbers have increased to 500 (more than doubled) so if it was to happend they were always going to struggle to find somewhere to hold it. It's one of the "problems" the club now faces with the membership surge. Could always see problems like this happening. In fairness to them it is huge learning curve for them as well

AFL on verge of cracking one million members

Paul Crawley & Greg Denham
The Australian
16 June 2018

The AFL competition is poised to create history by achieving a record combined membership this year of more than one million people.

With 980,000 AFL and club memberships locked in, including almost 180,000 new members, the league will establish a new benchmark some time next month. The league is understood to have based expectations that it will attract its 1,000,000th member on the usual annual sales rush in July.

The AFL’s 18th consecutive membership record has surpassed expectations after a 3 per cent increase last year enabled it to break 900,000 for the first time, when 907,562 people signed up for membership. Ten of the 18 clubs broke their membership records and eight clubs had memberships of more than 50,000.

The clubs that last season improved on their 2016 membership figure were Adelaide, Essendon, Geelong, Greater Western Sydney, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs, with West Coast set to have record numbers this season. The inaugural AFL Women’s League membership tally of 7191 was included in last year’s overall figures.

Last year, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said the popularity of the game had never been greater and boasted that “one in every 27 Australians is now a member of an AFL club”. As of next month, one in every 25 Australians will officially be AFL or club members.

This year’s 11 per cent increase of overall memberships has partly been through the resurgence of Richmond as a football powerhouse. The 2017 premiers could become the first sporting club in the southern hemisphere to have a membership of more than 100,000.

Unexpected demand had Tigers membership tracking towards 96,000 yesterday, which is already a remarkable increase on last year’s record of 72,669. The club, which had targeted 90,000 this season, believes it will go close to achieving six figures before next month’s cut-off.

Richmond, who have grown rank-and-file numbers for the past eight consecutive years, have signed up more than 25,000 new members since last year’s grand final. Before this year, no club had ever broken the 80,000-membership barrier. Collingwood, who had 75,879 members last year, went close in 2014 with 79,347.

Whorethorn celebrating Shaun Burgoyne‘s 350th.

Hawthorn has honoured the stars of the 1978, 1988 and 2008 premiership teams across the weekend, with a lap of honour at Saturday night's match followed by a reunion held in Melbourne on Sunday

How many attended?

Official crowd: 26,693 at the MCG.  :lol :rollin

But we are suppose to be the most fickle supporters.  :rollin

MEMBERSHIP

The AFL is to rewrite the record books this season by lifting league and club membership levels to one million. The preliminary figures reveal 180,000 new members this season - another strong indicator of public support.

AFL premier Richmond again leads the way with 96,000 members [sic, it's now 97k] - and this figure will hold up with the league’s official audit that will strip other AFL clubs of their inflated numbers with free digital membership.

The Tigers could become the first sporting team in the southern hemisphere with 100,000 members - beating Collingwood to this impressive mark.

CROWDS

The league leader remains AFL premier Richmond with 57,162 at home games.

12/07/2017     70,428

We added a further 2000 members from this point before the end of July cut-off last year.

Melbourne, Bulldogs, St Kilda and North should merge and or relocate with Tassie, Brisbane, GCS and GWS. After after 120+ years they are not going to get any bigger. Would make it a decent 14 team comp.

Do Richmond officials have 1665 memberships in the office waiting to be dished out slowly causing suspense for those who seem to
take this seriously. IMHO I reckon they already know they have 100,000 members, I think they have picked a day to announce and all this
stuff of trickling out small increases is all part of the gimmick.

I think you are somewhere in the ballpark. I am totally confident on reaching the 100,000 mark. I reckon they  will have already talked to the AFL to make sure the AFL are ok with how we are arriving at the figure.

this is unbelievable mind you I was listening to Greek radio this morning and they were talking about Ronaldos move to Juventus.
The Italians sold out there membership in 2 days - 33,000 membership seat allocation to games, and generated 33 million Euros as a result which means that a Juventus annual seat costs about 1000 Euros a season. Simply Amazing.

We don't want to be like Hawthorn and tell everyone we have 100,000 members, then have the AFL audit our membership and find we have 42,000.

Have to love the oppo supporters saying '100k members, but you only get a 50k crowd' like every single one of their members attends every game  :lol

You have to laugh at the morons, some of it is total rubbish you gotta wonder about some of the people in this world.(well not so much the Collingwood one's)
That said, I've dreamt of this jealousy and hatred loving it.

First club to attract attendances of more than one million in a season [Achieved way back in 1972].

Only club to achieve four consecutive games of 90k+ attendance [QF 2017, PF 2017, GF 2017, R1 2018].

Holder of the largest-ever crowd to a Round 1 AFL/VFL match.

First and only club to have 100,000 members.

Pass this info on to your envious non-Tiger mates  ;D.

I could be wrong here, but I had an old clipping from the Herald Sun from 1980, that said that in that year, we were the first club to attract 1,000,000 people to our games in the regular season (ie. No finals).

It was a million including finals in 1980. You couldn't attract that many in the H/A season alone back then due to most clubs were still playing at their old smaller suburban grounds.

We've cracked the million mark in the regular season alone in 1998, 2013, 2015 & 2017. This year will be the 5th time we will do it.

IIRC, in 1980 we were the first club to average 50k to our home games across the H/A season  :thumbsup.

Benny Gale take a bow!
People laughed at 3-0-75.
We are now having the last laugh!   :gotigers :clapping :cheers

Let’s just fix the 3 and then it can be one of sports administrations greatest ever achievements on the basis of breadth and impact
[/quote

So just for clarity on the 3-0-75 target....

I thought the 3 in 3-0-75 meant 3 premierships. But in Konrad Marshall's book, p.47, he says the 3 is three finals appearances, one of which would involve a top 4 finish.

Does anyone know for sure?

My memory was 3 finals appearances, $0 of debt and 75k members by 2014?

Yep Dougey, that's correct.

There was also a longer term one (10-years) which had us aiming to win 3 flags by 2020. So one down; two to go  ;D.

From March 2010:

RICHMOND'S bold plan for the next five years, to be clear of debt, play finals three times and attract 75,000 members, is only the first stage of an even more ambitious goal of winning three premierships within 10 years.

The Tigers' detailed five-year plan, as revealed in The Age last week, is about positioning the club for a serious era of success which has the club hoping to have won three cups by 2020.

The AFL has released the official audited membership figures for each club.

We've finished top with 100,726 members. An increase of 39% on last year and 20k more than the next highest :thumbsup.

Its interesting that there was only 151k 3 game memberships sold over the 18 clubs. I would have thought the number would have been a lot higher.
