Tigers appoint inaugural VFLW coach

richmondfc.com.au
November 10, 2017 2:45 PM

Richmond has appointed Tom Hunter as its inaugural VFLW and Next Generation Academy coach.

Hunter, 26, has been an assistant coach with the VFL Tigers for the past two seasons and has completed Level 3 of the AFL’s coaching accreditation course.

“As a primary school teacher with a significant football background, Tom emerged as the outstanding candidate to work in a diverse environment,” said Richmond’s general manager – football talent, Dan Richardson.

“We have seen Tom’s communication skills, empathy and teaching background first-hand through our VFL program over the past two years, under the leadership of VFL and development coach Craig McRae.

“Tom will be responsible for developing our female football talent, as well as mentoring our young, emerging footballers through the Richmond Academy.

“He is young and enthusiastic and most importantly passionate about player development.

“We are excited to announce his appointment and look forward to watching the VFLW and Next Generation Academy programs grow under his guidance.”

Hunter will work closely with Richmond’s female football operations manager, Kate Sheahan, to build a VFLW program that allows its players to thrive.

The Club, which will enter the AFLW competition in 2020, will host a VFLW Come and Try Day at Punt Road Oval on Saturday.

The talent identification process will be overseen by Richardson, Richmond’s general manager – football, Neil Balme, and list manager Blair Hartley.

A promising junior footballer, Hunter was drafted to Collingwood with pick 18 in the 2010 AFL Rookie Draft.

However he was forced into retirement aged 20, after a series of serious neck injuries.

Hunter then began his craft as a coach and spent three years as an assistant at TAC Cup club Calder Cannons – coaching the forward line in his debut season, the backline in his second, and the midfield in the final year.

He was then lured to Richmond by McRae.

“Firstly I’d like to thank Richmond for giving me the opportunity to coach both the VFLW and Richmond Academy programs,” Hunter said.

“I can’t thank ‘Fly’ enough for his support over the past two years and for encouraging me to apply for this position.

“Tomorrow we begin the VFLW recruitment process, before the season commences in May.

“It marks an exciting time for myself personally, but also for the Club and its members and supporters, who can now proudly follow a Richmond female football side.”

Great appointment

Terrific young bloke is Tom

Would have made it at AFL level but for the neck injury. A very nasty injury the last one

Dan Richardson filled a different role in Saturday as he acted as a talent scout for the first round of the club’s VFLW team trials alongside general manager of football Neil Balme and list manager Blair Hartley.

Richmond has appointed former Collingwood rookie Tom Hunter as coach of the team which is its first step towards it entering an AFLW side from 2020.

“I think we intentionally swayed more to the younger age bracket,” Richardson said of the trial.

“Hopefully we can introduce some girls to the program next year and the year after and some of those will come through and be potentially good AFLW players in a couple of years’ time.”

Richmond has begun its search for the Club’s inaugural group of VFLW players.

Following the appointment of Tom Hunter as VFLW and Academy coach, the Tigers held a Talent Day at the Swinburne Centre last Saturday.

About 70 participants, who travelled from various areas across Victoria, attended the skills and match simulation session.

They trained under the watchful eyes of Richmond’s general manager – football Neil Balme, general manager – football talent Dan Richardson and list manager Blair Hartley.

Richmond's AFLW football operations manager Kate Sheahan said it was a highly successful event.

“We were very pleased with the level of skills on display," Sheahan said.

“To see so many determined and passionate female footballers was also exciting for the Club as we establish a VFLW program.

"The response from the participants was overwhelmingly positive - they felt we provided a supportive and inclusive environment."

The Club will next hold a VFLW Talent Day at Bendigo's Queen Elizabeth Oval on Friday, December 15.

Richmond has signed its first VFLW player ahead of the Club’s inaugural season.

Natarsha Bamblett has committed to the VFLW Tigers as a rookie after starring at last weekend’s Koorie Women’s Football Carnival.

Playing for the Fitzroy Stars, Bamblett was named player of the carnival after a dominant display.

BENDIGO Thunder’s Jac Louttit will be part of Richmond’s inaugural VFL women’s team next year.

The Tigers have secured a VFLW licence for next year ahead of the club’s entry into the AFLW competition in 2020.

Louttit was one of the stars for the Bendigo Thunder this year, playing in the ruck in the club’s premiership season in the inaugural Northern Football League women’s competition.

She was the Thunder’s vice-captain, won the best on ground medal in the Thunder’s 5.5 (35) to 4.1 (25) grand final win over Diamond Creek and was runner-up in the NFL women’s best and fairest, finishing one vote behind winner Shannon Egan of Darebin.

Meanwhile, Richmond is holding VFLW trials in Bendigo next week.

The trials will be held at the QEO from 4.30pm to 7pm on Friday, December 15.

Registration will open at 3pm, with attendees to bring training attire, footy boots and runners.

Forrner Bendigo Thunder star Jess Kennedy signs with Richmond's VFLW side

Kieran Iles
Bendigo Advertiser
December 14, 2017 - 6:00PM

SPEEDY former Bendigo Thunder midfielder Jess Kennedy will join Richmond’s VFLW team in 2018.

The 27-year-old, who represented Carlton during the inaugural AFL Women’s league season in 2017, will add necessary experience and leadership to a Tigers team playing its first season in the state league competition.

Kennedy was the Thunder’s best and fairest in 2016 and last season played with Diamond Creek in the VFL Women’s competition.

The Creekers, whose ranks included other former Thunder players in Emma Grant, Reni Hicks and 2017 premiership midfielder Kerryn Harrington, finished the season as runners-up, after they were narrowly beaten by Darebin in the premiership decider.

Richmond AFLW football operations manager Kate Sheahan said the club was excited to have a player with Kennedy’s credentials as one of its earliest signings.

“She’s an incredibly quick and skilful midfielder and that’s the game style we’ll be trying to play,” she said.

“When Jess committed to us were incredibly thrilled and we think she will be a really valuable asset to the team with her leadership and experience at AFLW level.

“Being a Bendigo girl, she will train up in Bendigo once a week,

“She’s an experienced physiotherapist in her own right and brings so many skills and attributes to our club that we are really thrilled with.”

Kennedy said she was thrilled when she learned the Tigers had gained a VFLW licence.

“Hearing of the connection that (the Tigers) had with Bendigo Thunder, and the pathway for women in that region to come and play, I was in contact with Kate Sheahan and it rolled on from there,” she told Richmond’s website.

She also spoke of the excitement surrounding the inaugural AFLW match, of which she was a part against Collingwood.

“I don’t think I’ve had an experience in the rest of my life like that very first AFLW game,” she said.

“The hair still stands up on the back of my neck when I think about it.

“It was an unreal atmosphere and to think that it was initially going to be at Olympic Park where a couple of people might have walked up to the fence, to a (Princess Park) lockout and get the win was incredible.”

Kennedy initially Carlton as a free agent, one day after the inaugural AFLW National Draft in October last year.

Her arrival at Punt Road swells to two the number of former Thunder players to sign with Richmond.

The Thunder’s 2017 vice-captain Jac Louttit has also made her way to Tigerland following a stellar season in the Northern Football League Women’s with the premiers.

With its AFLW licence secure, Richmond will field a side in the national competition for the first time in 2020.

From Prez Peggy O'Neal on the RFC website:

It is great that we will have an VFLW team next year leading into an AFLW team the following year? When will we get details of the upcoming VFLW season?

We are excited and pleased to have a VFLW team in 2018 and Kate Sheahan who heads up our women’s program is working hard to develop our playing list for next year. It is a significant undertaking and she is leaving no stone unturned looking for players. Our final list and fixture for the 2018 season will be shared with members and fans as soon as it is available.

Egan jumps on Tiger train

Lauren Bordin
Shepparton News
30 December 2017

A one-off football game filling in for a friend turned into an obsession for Grace Egan.

The Shepparton teenager pulled on the boots for Mooroopna at the end of 2015 and will now take her spot in Richmond’s inaugural VFL women’s side.

Plenty has happened in Egan’s brief career as she eyes off being drafted for the 2019 AFLW season.

Also a star netballer, Egan broke her ankle shortly after playing her first game of football in 2015.

She snapped her right ankle while playing for the Shepparton Swans, missing out on the side’s under-17s premiership defeat of Shepparton.

Just a few months later Egan would try out for the Murray Bushrangers despite not having fully recovered.

‘‘I shouldn’t have played, but I got surgery and I was out for three months,’’ Egan said.

‘‘ ... because I was doing my rehab consistently I could run. It looked really bad, but I went and played Bushies but that’s the year it wasn’t as talent laden.’’

Egan has been at the forefront of the growth of youth girls football since the sport took a turn upwards in playing numbers and subsequently talent in recent years.

Last year the Shepparton Notre midfielder/defender took out the youth girls best-and-fairest award, before claiming premiership honours this year.

Egan is coached at the Bears by her dad, world champion BMX rider Leigh.

Although his background is not in football, Egan said he has been a big contributor to her earning a VFL contract with the Tigers.

‘‘We have our ups and downs, Dad always has my best interests and wants the best for me,’’ she said.

‘‘He’ll yell at me and tell me what I did wrong and where I can do better, but I can’t change that and I don’t really want to because look where he’s got me now and I just have to thank him for that.’’

Having crossed to netball at Shepparton in 2016, Egan was quickly identified by head coach Tracey Brereton as an emerging talent.

She spent the most recent season in A-grade but will step back her netball duties.

‘‘I’ve chosen to focus more on football next year. I’m still an emergency for the A-grade team at the Bears, so I can choose to come and play when I’m able to, but I still want to focus a bit more on football to try and get drafted,’’ Egan said.

Basketball fell by the wayside following her first game of football two years ago, in a similar fashion to many other girls who have chosen to pursue football.

Egan has played for Victoria Country in Queensland where she thrived on learning from top-age players.

She will now combine Year 12 studies with a weekly trip to Punt Rd to train with Richmond where she can play up to six VFL games next year, as commitments to the Bushies and Victoria Country come first.

But she is raring to continue her development with eyes firmly on an AFLW berth.

‘‘I’m just ready to go down to Melbourne and give it all I’ve got and learn off the women down there who have been there and get a good bump and see how it goes,’’ Egan said.

‘‘I guess I’m just always willing to have a crack and learn something new and I’ll take any advice someone will give me, I try my hardest and do the best I can.’’

Dixon signs with Tigers: Echuca Football Club star to play in VFLW

Riverine Herald
26 January 2018

KATE Dixon (pictured) has been signed by Richmond Football Club and will play with the Tigers in their inaugural season in the 13-team VFLW competition.

Richmond will qualify for an AFLW licence in 2020 and the 30-year-old midfielder is determined to be part of the club’s history when its first side plays in the national competition.

It has been a meteoric rise for the reincarnated tennis player – 2017 was her first season of any form of football (“but I did have a lot of kick-to-kick in the backyard with dad”) when she joined Echuca Football Netball Club.

Where the writing was on the wall very early – she was named club captain and had a stellar debut season as a genuinely tough midfielder.

It might all seem like a dream run but behind the scenes Dixon, and the other 42 girls in the Richmond pre-season squad, are discovering there is a lot of hard work between signing and the season’s opening game against the Western Bulldogs on May 5.

And sacrifice – since January 1 Dixon has sworn off soft drink and alcohol to give her body every chance to be as good as it can.

“I got a call in December after Mick (Echuca women’s coach Mick McInnes) had recommended Jodie Lake and me for a trial with Richmond at Bendigo,” Dixon said.

“That was pretty tough, it was really hot and they really worked us hard,” she said.

“From there I got the chance to go to the trials in Melbourne and from there was offered the contract.”

What most people probably don’t know was Dixon blew a knee playing hockey three years ago and it took 12 months to recover from a full reconstruction – making her rise and rise as a footballer even more impressive.

Her sporting career began on the tennis court with local coach Andrew Crossman and reached an international ranking as an under 18 and a relocation to Spain for specialist training.

But Barcelona was a long way from the Murray and the homesick teenager came back.

Which led her to the hockey pitch and touch football (she runs to Jack Eddy Oval, plays and runs home), the knee reconstruction and the football field.

“The change between Vic Park and Punt Rd is incredible, the intensity is three or four times higher – and that’s just pre-season,” Dixon said.

“Richmond has its AFL team, VFL team and now the women’s VFL team and that means a lot of scheduling to make sure everything goes like clockwork,” she said.

“The facilities are amazing – even at training we have a team doctor, physios, assistant coaches, trainers – and a personal trainer. There is the gym, a pool, ice baths, everything you could imagine.

“As Richmond players we have access all areas passes. The club is very serious about this team and giving us every support. Our coach is Tom Hunter, who was a Collingwood player before a neck injury and assistant coach Shaun Smith spends a lot of time with us.”

And a lot of time is something that has taken on a new meaning for Dixon.

Working on a mixed farm outside Moama, she starts every day by 7am and is already needed in Melbourne twice a week so on practice days she is up by 6am and rarely home before midnight.

“I HAVE to be gone by 1.30pm on training days and I am lucky to have family and friends to support me with all the travelling,” she said.

On top of that the Tigers have the girls on strict and demanding schedules for the rest of the week.

“We have to keep food logs, sleep diaries and keep to a training schedule, much of which we have to video, and send to the club for assessment, and online training. Basically we are training five or six days a week at this stage,” Dixon said.

“We haven’t had anyone vomit on the track yet but a few came close the other day when it was pretty hot,” she said.

At just 167cm and 74kg Dixon said she was not the smallest player in the team but she was now training alongside some seriously tall girls.

Apart from the work at Punt Rd she is in the gym most days in a campaign to add to her muscle mass to back up her reputation as a tough, aggressive player.

The qualities she hopes will take her a long way in the game.

“The knee I did was my left one, and while I kick with both feet I am right footed, so that helps,” Dixon said.

“My range is about 40m but my strength is I can go all day and will do anything to get my hands on the ball,” she said.

“And I love the team environment. It’s such a radical change from tennis where you are the only one on your side of the net. At Echuca and now Richmond you know if you are hurting you are surrounded by people in the same state and you get through it together.”

The VFLW contract does not come with a big signing bonus or fat salary, that’s down the track for this fledgling unit.

But nothing could dampen Dixon’s elation as she signed her name to her first player contract at Punt Rd on Wednesday night.

“People knew I had been offered the position but now it’s very real and as soon as I signed I could not wait to start ringing people,” she added.

But even in her elation Dixon emphasised she owed a lot, and to a lot of people.

Starting with family and friends but also to the coaches and people she has spent so much time with.

“I was coached in tennis by Andrew Crossman for 15 years and he was fantastic in so many ways, but especially in helping me with my mental focus and strength – in tennis you can feel so alone but he was great with that,’’ Dixon said.

“Of course everyone at Echuca footy club. If they hadn’t started the women’s team none of this would have happened. Brett Stevens was behind a lot of that. And Mick for being such a good coach and for nominating me for the trials.

“And Evan Catlow, who I work with, has been so helpful with the time away from the job.

“There are a lot of people in country areas with the talent but if you don’t have the support network it just makes it so hard. I am just so lucky I have all the people around me I do.”

TWENTY years after she last pulled on footy boots, Courtney Wakefield is running around on Punt Road Oval in the yellow and black.

The lifelong Tigers supporter and mother of two young children is among 45 women making history as Richmond’s first ever women’s footballers in the club’s VFLW preseason squad.

Wakefield said she was taking it “a week at a time” as she follows her dreams without looking too far ahead.

“Whether its just the squad or we take it further, it’s all an unreal experience, so we’re just grabbing it with both hands and making the most of it at this stage,” she said.

Former Bendigo Thunder players Elise Hogan and Emily Findlay joins Richmond's VFLW side

Kieran Iles
Bendigo Advertiser
13 Feb 2018

THE number of former Bendigo Thunder players to join Richmond’s VFLW side has swelled by two more.

And it might not end there, with the Tigers hinting at more possible signings in the months ahead before the start of the season in March.

The Tigers have added former Melbourne AFLW player Elise Hogan and Thunder midfielder Emily Finday.

They join marquee signing and former Carlton AFLW midfielder Jess Kennedy and 2017 Thunder premiership vice-captain Jac Louttit.

The quartet took part in a joint training session with select Bendigo Pioneers and AFL Central Victoria Academy players at the QEO on Monday afternoon.

Richmond AFLW football operations manager Kate Sheahan said Hogan and Findlay would each add their own attributes to the Tigers’ developing list.

“We are really rapt to have Elise Hogan over from Melbourne, who is a huge Tigers supporter,” she said.

“She’s brought a huge amount of experience and leadership to the group.”

Hogan played one game for Melbourne in the inaugural AFLW season in 2017.

With the final list certain to contain a mix of young and experienced players – and some with non-football backgrounds – Sheahan said the leadership of players like Louttit had been crucial in the team’s formative stages.

“We are going to have a pretty young side, so having one of those older girls based in Bendigo will give the younger girls like Emily Findlay some guidance,” he said.

“We have also spent a bit of time with (Thunder midfielder) Kodi Jacques, who isn’t listed, but she will be one of our TAC Cup players when we are allowed to play then, which won’t be until after June.”

Monday’s hour-long training session was run by Tigers AFLW coach Tom Hunter, with support from senior Richmond footballers, including young premiership forward Dan Butler.

For the Pioneers girls it was an opportunity to gain exposure on what was needed to take the next step in their careers to VFLW level, and ultimately the AFLW.

The spirit of Anzac Day is particularly special for the VFLW Tigers’ newest recruits Kirra Grimes, Alice Edmonds and Trish Muller.

The trio all currently serve in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and feel honoured to have the opportunity to play on Anzac Day Eve, when Richmond VFLW takes on the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Women’s All Stars team in a curtain-raiser match at the Swinburne Centre, Punt Road Oval.

The match starts at 3:10pm, with an Anzac service on the field at 3pm, and is free for fans to attend, to show support to Richmond’s new VFLW team, as well as the ADF team featuring current serving members of the Australian Defence Force.

Fans can then head over to the MCG to watch Richmond take on Melbourne in the annual Anzac Day Eve blockbuster.

Historic win for VFLW Tigers

The VFLW Tigers have marked themselves in the history books, claiming victory in their first ever home and away match, beating the Western Bulldogs 6.5 (41) to 0.3 (3) at Whitten Oval on Saturday afternoon.

In a momentous Round 1 performance, Richmond dominated play from the get-go. They attacked the game with vigour and defended with determination, ceasing all the Bulldogs’ forward entries.

Early in the first term, co-vice captain Kate Dixon snagged the first goal of the match, much to the delight of the roaring Richmond spectators. By the end of the first quarter, the Tigers held a 12 point lead.

A slower second quarter saw no majors scored by either side, but the Tigers stayed in control and the margin extended to 15 points.

Richmond had a massive second half, spearheaded by Dixon and Jenna Colwell, who worked together seamlessly in the forward line. By the conclusion of the match, the Tigers had stretched their lead to a whopping 38 points.

Coach Tom Hunter said the women exemplified true Tiger spirit.

“There’s a real Richmond brand trickling down from AFL, to VFL level, but then also through to our girls now at VFLW,” Hunter said.

“What was pleasing about it was the way they controlled the game. They showed composure with ball-in-hand, took some really great options, and moved the ball the way we wanted to.”

Dixon was prolific for the Tigers. After her historic first goal she went on to boot another three goals and amass nine disposals.

Hunter said Dixon’s performance was a credit to her hard work throughout the pre-season.

“To get the results on the scoreboard just shows that she’s worked really hard, she knows her strengths, and she’s played to her strengths really well,” he said.

Richmond’s defensive pressure was formidable. Led by defender Jacqueline Graham, who racked up a match-leading 21 disposals, they kept the Western Bulldogs goalless for the entirety of the game.

Coach Hunter said the team has developed a reliable group of back six girls who are working together cohesively.

“Our back six were really impressive. Jacqui led really well, Lisa Davie did a fantastic job locking down her opponent, and same with Evelyn Burry. The girls are really gelling well together and they’ll continue to gel well over the course of the season.”

The Tigers will face off against the Darebin Falcons in Round 2 next Saturday 12 May at 12.00pm at the Swinburne Centre, Punt Road Oval.

“We’ll start again and we’ll continue to back our process and get back to that pressure and really set the scene from that end,” said Hunter.

Richmond have been defeated 0.4 (4) to 6.7 (43) by the Darebin Falcons in Round 2 of the VFLW on Saturday afternoon at the Swinburne Centre, Punt Road Oval.

A testing match for the Tigers, they fought gallantly against the experienced Darebin side in drizzly conditions. Darebin broke away early in the match and recorded four unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes. But the Tigers kept them at bay for the remainder of the game, which proved to be an arm wrestle.

After the first quarter, Richmond boosted their intensity around the ball and drove harder into contests. Darebin scored just one goal in the second term, three points in the third, and one goal in the fourth. It was a much fiercer battle than what the scoreboard suggested.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, they found themselves unable to capitalise when presented with goal opportunities. While the ball resided in their forward 50m for a large portion of the game, Darebin were successful in spoiling Richmond’s attempts to close the margin.

VFLW Round 3

COLLINGWOOD vs RICHMOND
– Sunday 2pm @ Swinburne Centre

[LIVE on RSN / Women’s Australian Rules Football Radio]

FORM COMING IN

After keeping the Western Bulldogs goalless in Round 1, Richmond suffered the same fate last week in their 39-point loss to the Darebin Falcons. Collingwood tied with the Geelong Cats last week in the season’s first draw after beating Williamstown the week before.

KEY QUESTION

Will goalkicking be a major issue for both teams? The Tigers and Magpies had little problem in front of goal in their first-round wins, but both teams lost their radar last week. Richmond scored 0.4 in their match against the Falcons, while Collingwood missed plenty of opportunities in its draw against Geelong by kicking 0.8 in the first half.

KEY STAT
The Tigers will want to improve their forward-line efficiency after having two less inside-50s than Darebin last week but only scoring from 13 per cent of those entries. Poor kicking and taking 26 fewer marks than the Falcons looked to be the key concerns for Richmond, which will need to be cleaner to break through Collingwood’s defence.

Former Collingwood midfielder Lauren Tesoriero will make her debut for the VFLW Tigers in Sunday's clash.

The match will kick off at the Swinburne Centre, Punt Road Oval at 2pm.

Richmond VFLW player Courtney Wakefield combining motherhood with playing

May 23, 2018 8:53pm
by Matt Balmer
FOX SPORTS

IMAGINE travelling seven hours just for one game of football — and then driving all the way back again.

That’s exactly what Richmond VFL squad member Courtney Wakefield does every single week.

The 31-year-old mother of two, travels to Melbourne on Thursday, before training with the Tigers on Friday night, playing a game on Saturday, before making the 600km trek back to her home — ending a 1200km round trip over four days to play a game of footy.

In an intriguing interview with Fox Footy’s On The Mark, aired on Wednesday evening, Wakefield spoke about her journey from motherhood to the football field, having returned to the game after a 20 year hiatus.

“There just weren’t those opportunities around to play women’s football and when it started up again, I thought I could do it,” Wakefield said.

“I thought — who cares if you’ve got two kids and are 31 or you live 600km away from Melbourne, I can still do it.”

Without an invite, Wakefield turned up “with a baby on the hip” to a Richmond VFLW training run in Bendigo, impressing coach Tom Hunter.

“I needed to stop halfway (through training) to feed the little fella,” Wakefield explained.

“The following week I got a message from Kate (Sheahan) to give Tommy a call, I gave him a call and he offered me a spot on the preseason squad to try out.”

Living on a farm, the size of 25,000 MCG grounds, gives the Tiger plenty of space to kick the footy around.

“I always get around in my runners and sports bra, so if he (Husband Tom) happens to sneak in the door for a break, I just palm off the kids and I’m out the door to do my 45 minutes of exercise.” Wakefield said.

After gaining a spot on the list and with family watching on, Wakefield’s journey was cut short after an elbow injury “about three minutes” into a practice match in Bendigo in March.

“I think until up to that stage I’d travelled 10 and a half thousand kilometres and got three minutes of game time,” Wakefield said.

“Initially I thought there goes my season, it was painful, it was actually more painful than childbirth.”

Living over 1000km away from Punt Road presents its challenges, but Wakefield takes it in her stride with crucial support from husband Tom.

“It wouldn’t be possible without his support, he said you’ve had two kids so you need to do something for yourself, but he probably didn’t have this in mind.”

I don't watch it thinking it's going to be women playing to the same standard of men in the  AFL or VFL. It will never be like that and TBH nor should it be.

I see it for what it is. And that's why I actually don't mind it. I dont watch thinking I'm going to see Dusty Martins running around

Just like when i watch the local under 15s, I watch it for what it is

Or when I've watched the local comp that's for intellectual challenged people I watch it for what it is. Standard is horrible but that's OK. You accept it for what it is.

If people dont like womens footy that's fine, it's a personal choice and you can think it is crap but doesnt mean everyone else has to think or feel the same way

Ok I had a look...

The standard is about the level of an under 13 local boys comp and the girls can only kick it about 25 metres on average & the odd girl can roost the ball about 35-40. Some of them can actually mark the footy too. Mostly the skills are poor and some can’t even handpass properly. Long way to go.

VFLW Tigers fall to Hawks

The VFLW Tigers have faced an agonising four-point loss this afternoon, falling to Hawthorn in Round 8 at the Swinburne Centre.

With six changes from their last game, it was a significantly altered line up for the Tigers. Absent from the side were a number of key players including Emma King, Sophie Conway, Lauren Tesoriero and Christina Bernardi.

But the Tigers proved their depth as they matched up to one of the most experienced teams in the league.

Richmond fought gallantly against the practiced Hawthorn outfit. While they couldn’t stage a fairytale comeback, they played to their strengths and embodied the Richmond brand of football.

It was a slow start to the game, an arm wrestle which resulted in no majors scored in the first term. While Richmond had possession for the majority of the opening quarter, they couldn’t capitalise on their efforts.

The Hawks broke clear in the second quarter as they rapidly piled on three consecutive goals. They increased their lead to 21 points, with Richmond yet to hit the scoreboard.

But the Tigers weren’t finished just yet.

Richmond’s intensity around the ball lifted and their defensive layers strengthened, giving Hawthorn restricted options when in possession. They dominated forward entry and attacked with flair.

Courtney Wakefield snagged Richmond’s first as she nailed a set shot. Soon after, Emma Gunn claimed one of her own as she goaled on the run. Then, Jacinta Louttit snapped her first in the yellow and black. By three-quarter time, the margin was narrowed to a mere 10 points.

In a gripping final few minutes, the Tigers bridged the gap to just four points, thanks to a monster goal from Kate Dixon. But while they held Hawthorn goalless for the entire second half, they had left their run too late.

Despite the loss, Coach Tom Hunter said it was pleasing to see each individual girl stick to their role.

“No matter who we put on the park, our process stands up to some really good opposition. So we’ll take away that we were very close to beating a very good side,” he said.

Hunter had a clear message to the girls at three quarter time; stay supported, stay together.

“At any stage, it didn’t look like we were disconnected from each other. We were celebrating the little wins when we were out there, we were supporting each other when it was tough. And that’s the side that we want to look like,” he said.

Hunter said the result was an opportunity for Richmond to showcase their development, after suffering a 82-point defeat to the Hawks during the practice rounds.

“We had about 10 girls that were playing in that game that played today. Their development and their growth as footballers since that practice game has just been fantastic. So it’s a real credit to the hard work that they’re putting in,” he said.

Ruckwoman Alice Edmonds was prolific for the Tigers. Her contest at stoppages and her movement around the ground were unrivalled.

“It’s very hard for anyone to touch the ball when she puts her hands up, so we’re really proud with how she’s growing and how she’s developing as a footballer,” Hunter said.

Gutsy midfielder Phoebe Monahan illustrated her stunning form once again as she topped Richmond for disposals, kicks and handballs.

Richmond’s next challenge will be Essendon at Windy Hill, next Sunday July 8 at 11.30am, another double header with the VFL.

Courtney Wakefield happy to help next generation of female footballers

Sunraysia Daily
Australian Community Media - Fairfax Media
5 July 2018

RICHMOND VFL Women’s footballer Courtney Wakefield says a girls’ talent day would have been great when she was a youngster wanting to play football.

The Top Hut Station-based 2016 Wentworth A Grade premiership netballer and Gol Gol footballer was among the Richmond staff and players at Wednesday's talent search at George Gordon Oval in Dareton, which the Tigers ran in conjunction with AFL Sunraysia and the Bendigo Pioneers.

“It would have been fantastic," Wakefield said.

“Obviously, I played under 11s and that was 20 years ago, there weren’t those opportunities back then and days like this weren’t around.

VFLW: Bombers eclipse Tigers

The VFLW Tigers have been outdone by Essendon in Round 9 of the VFLW, falling to the Bombers 5.4 (34) to 3.8 (26) at Windy Hill on Sunday.

Windy Hill delivered all conditions, and certainly lived up to its name, with the girls enduring rain and blistering wind before some late sunshine.

The Bombers were vying for their first win of the season, and put the Tigers under pressure from the get-go.

Essendon took ascendancy in the opening stages of the game, hitting the scoreboard three times before Richmond’s first score. The slippery conditions made for scrappy football and the Tigers trailed by seven points at the first change.

Richmond came back roaring in the second quarter, thanks to early goals by skipper Jess Kennedy and debutant Sophie Damon. They lifted their intensity and fought forwards. Beth Lynch capitalised on a 50metre penalty and booted her first goal in the yellow and black, which cemented a five-point lead for the Tigers at halftime.

The home side returned hungry for a maiden victory, with two majors in the third term. The goals dried up for the Tigers, who were hampered by the blustery conditions, and only managed one behind. By three-quarter time the Bombers had seized an eight-point lead.

The final quarter was a tight battle. The Tigers controlled play, making the most of the advantageous wind and boosting their delivery into the forward line. But while their intensity was clear as they locked in the ball, they struggled to convert, and finished the quarter with six behinds and zero goals.  Essendon made the most of their chances and a late fourth-quarter goal sealed an eight-point win.

Coach Tom Hunter said the girls will take away some crucial lessons from the loss, which they will apply during the week.

“We give them opportunities to grow and develop on things they need to improve on. We’ll give them a clear focus on what they need to improve on to give them the best opportunity to prepare for next week against Casey.”

Murray Bushrangers young gun Sophie Damon came into the Tigers squad as their 23rd player and impressed in her yellow and black debut. She showcased her monster kick and impressive ball movement which was furthered by her much-needed goal in the second term.

“It was really exciting to see her come in and kick that goal. She played her role and what we asked her to do, she did. And I think she felt really supported by all the girls,” Hunter said.

Captain Jess Kennedy led by example as she impacted the contest and worked hard across the ground, amassing 13 touches, seven kicks and three inside-50s.

“JK is a ripper. I think it’s getting a little easier for her because the other girls are standing up and playing their roles and they know what is required of them,” Hunter said.

Alice Edmonds prevailed as Richmond’s best. The 189cm ruckwoman demonstrated her composure with ball in hand and her high work rate as she gathered 23 touches, 40 hit-outs, 14 kicks and a remarkable 16 tackles.

Richmond’s next encounter will be Casey Demons at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo on Sunday July 15 at 2:30pm.

Queen Elizabeth Oval is familiar territory for many of the Tigers, with a large contingent of the girls based in Bendigo.

“It’s fantastic for the Bendigo families to come watch the girls a little closer to home. And we love playing there,” Hunter said.

RICHMOND   0.1       3.1       3.2       3.8 (26)

The Club held a Girls Talent Day in Mildura last Wednesday, to identify talent in its Next Generation Academy region and also the for the Tigers’ VFLW program.

The session was overseen by Richmond’s VFLW and Academy coach Tom Hunter and AFLW female football operations manager Kate Sheahan at The George Gordon Oval, Dareton.

They were assisted by Bendigo Pioneers, Murray Bushrangers and AFL Sunraysia staff, VFLW Tigers’ Courtney Wakefield and Lauren Tesoriero, Richmond CEO Brendon Gale and General Manager of Football Neil Balme.

Sheahan said female football was growing at a phenomenal rate - especially in regional areas.

“I was here this time last year and we had three girls turn up and all of a sudden we’ve got 75,” Sheahan said.

“I think female football is in a really good place. Everyone on the ground up here is doing an amazing job and you can see by the fact that 75 girls have shown up that. We’re really impressed.”

The participants, aged 14 years and over, completed a skills a drills session where they were put through kicking, marking, ground balls and contested balls, followed by a modified game.

Outback mum who does a 14-hour round trip to play footy aims to be a Tigers AFLW star

ABC Mildura-Swan Hill
By Simon Galletta, Andrew Schmidt and Alexandra Treloar
14 July 2018

Would you drive 1,200 kilometres to play a game of footy?

Courtney Wakefield does this road trip every week.

The 31-year-old Richmond Victoria Football League player drives to Melbourne every Friday from her home at Top Hut Station, near Pooncarie in far western New South Wales, to play the game she loves.

To some, the 14-hour round trip to kick a footy might seem excessive, but the dedicated full-forward has been waiting 20 years to strap the boots back on.

"I played footy for the Euston Bombers Under 11s side and absolutely loved it, but girls couldn't go any further than that, so I had to change to netball," Ms Wakefield said.

She hoped her story would encourage more girls in the bush to pick up the sport, no matter what challenges they face.

"I know my situation has created a bit of attention. So hopefully I can use that for good to inspire the younger generations to have a go."

Juggling farm life, kids and a career

Ms Wakefield's journey back to the game was a challenge from day one.

She turned up to a Richmond VFL training run in Bendigo with her seven-week-old son on her hip.

"I was in a bit of a newborn haze and I did have to stop halfway to feed him," the mother of two said.

"[Richmond AFLW coach] Kate Sheahan was fully understanding of my situation and having the little baby in tow.

"There would be things I'd have to do and the club was fantastic and have been from the get go."

As for her pre-season training, there's no flash gym or complicated training schedule. Living in the country, Ms Wakefield said she made do with what she had, to get it done.

"I just get around in my runners and sports bra and hand the kids over for half an hour and jump on to the dirt track road and run," she said.

While it took two decades to get back onto the ground, Ms Wakefield said she was grateful for the opportunities that had opened up for women who loved Australian Rules football.

"After Under 11s, there wasn't the opportunity that girls have now so we switched codes and played netball," she said.

"Given my location, age and two kids, it was going to gain attention which is fine. I want to use that in a positive light and create a pathway for future generations."

With Richmond Football Club on the prowl to head its first AFLW side in 2020, coach Kate Sheahan said scouting for AFL stars started in regional areas.

"They [women in the regions] have to find their own way, they have to come up with creative games and there's a lot of free play that occurs in regional country towns," she said.

"There's a lot of want for these girls to make it — there are a lot of hurdles they have to jump through."

With dreams to make it to Richmond's first AFLW team in 2020, Ms Wakefield said family would always come first.

"It's a goal for sure, but I'm 31 and would love to have more children. Obviously I'd love to play AFLW and for Richmond, but we'll just take it a season at a time."

2020 vision

The four clubs joining the AFLW competition in 2020 – Gold Coast, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast – were in attendance at the U18s AFLW Championship throughout the week, watching some of the young talent on show.

Richmond’s football operations manager Kate Sheahan said it was an information-gathering project for the Tigers.

"We have to keep an eye on the future, the game-styles and density. We had our head of strength and conditioning, head coach and our welfare manager here," Sheahan said.

"It was a really good opportunity for the staff to do some networking, learn from the other clubs, who are great at sharing information, building relationships and assessing where our VFLW team is and what the future looks like.

"This year the standard is so much higher and each year we're seeing improvements. They look like footballers, they run faster for longer. We're not looking at one player, because we don't know what the future is going to look like."

VFLW: Tigers go down to Demons

The VFLW Tigers have suffered their third loss in as many weeks, succumbing to Casey Demons by 18 points on Sunday afternoon at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo.

Richmond welcomed the Bendigo location, with Queen Elizabeth Oval a former home ground for many of the Bendio-based Tigers.

They also introduced two debutants to the side for the clash, Tarsh Bamblett and Laura Bailey.

Richmond were imposing in the first term, as they repeatedly locked the ball in their forward 50. In a congested quarter, they thrived at the contest and kept Casey scoreless.

But, despite their forwards’ drive, the congested play meant Richmond couldn’t gain a clean shot at goal. They struggled to execute and finished the quarter with four behinds.

Casey turned the game on its head in the second term as they scored 18 points and denied Richmond any progress on the scoreboard.

The Tigers were unable to keep up with Casey’s intensity and their inaccuracy cost them. By half time, Casey had raced to a 14-point lead.

Richmond, however, returned from their half time debrief invigorated, composed, and ready for some scoreboard damage.

Spearheaded by Lauren Tesoriero and Sophie Damon, who each claimed a goal, Richmond’s players on the field began to connect and they lifted their communication.

They gained momentum and amassed a huge 16 points in the third term to take a one-point lead at the final change.

But the Tigers were unable to shake a fast-finishing Casey in the final quarter, who snapped three goals to storm away with victory.

As a result, Casey leapfrogged Richmond on the ladder, where they now sit in eighth and ninth positions respectively.

Coach Tom Hunter conceded his side struggled to consistently stick to their desired brand of football over the full four quarters.

“I think the game showed that when we play our way and stick to our processes and the way we want to look, we can be really successful. When we came away from the way we wanted to look, it allowed the opposition into the game,” he said.

But he said the game still outlined many positives, and, most importantly, identified areas to polish.

Hunter praised Courtney Wakefield’s work rate in the forward line, where she collected 14 touches, 10 kicks and five marks.

“Courtney continues to just play her role. She works so hard and we really value what she brings to the side,” he said.

Ever-reliable defender Jacqui Graham had another prolific game in the yellow and black. Her gutsy nature and dominance in possession was on show as she amassed 18 disposals, 10 kicks and eight handballs.

Classy midfielder Lauren Tesoriero played a pivotal role for Richmond, who was dangerous with ball in hand. She lifted her teammates’ intensity around the field as she totalled a team-high performance in disposals (25), kicks (14) and handballs (11).

Richmond’s Round 11 challenge is third-placed NT Thunder, who they will play back at home next Saturday July 21 at 12:00pm.

Coach Hunter said returning to Tigerland after a few weeks on the road should reignite his side’s sense of identity.

“We love coming to Bendigo but to be able to be back at Punt Road, have the rooms that we train at and where we play more often than not, it just gives that sense of familiarity and we really see a confidence in the girls,” he said.

I reckon the girls should play on a smaller ground. Like under 12/13 boys footy the girls just don’t have the power to kick the footy more than 25-30 metres max.
If they make the ground smaller they’d probably increase scoring.

VFLW Tigers grounded by NT Thunder

The VFLW Tigers have faced a 4.5 (29) to 7.10 (52) defeat to NT Thunder on Saturday afternoon in Round 11 at the Swinburne Centre.

It was a tough task for the Tigers against the practiced NT Thunder outfit, who boast a large number of Adelaide Crows AFLW stars.

But, Richmond rose to the challenge and, as per Coach Tom Hunter’s instructions, they “seized their moments”.

It was a physical battle from the first bounce, with both sides bringing plenty of grit. Richmond’s pressure around the ball was significant, and after a contested first quarter, they held a two-point lead, which they extended to five points by half-time.

The Tigers forced NT Thunder to adapt to Richmond’s style of play, and they played with intent as they matched up against one of the league’s best.

But the ground opened up in the second half, and NT Thunder capitalised on their clearances as they managed five goals.

Richmond narrowed the margin to just 11 points in the final term, but they struggled to carry their first-half intensity across the full four quarters.

Despite this, Richmond’s on-field communication and encouragement towards each other never wavered.

By the final siren, NT Thunder had stretched their lead to 23 points.

Coach Hunter said he was rapt with the team’s ability to dictate play in the first half against such a quality side.

“We set them a task to play a certain style and deny NT the way that they wanted to play, and I think for the first half we certainly executed that,” Hunter said.

“The challenge for us, with the young side and building towards what we want to look like, is to narrow that gap down, from what it looks like when it’s awesome, and when it’s not going so well for us.”

The over-arching focus for the clash was to convert opportunities into moments of importance, and Hunter said he was pleased with how the girls embodied this.

“We’ve praised the girls on what they do really well, and when the opportunity comes to shine, we want them to show their strengths,” Hunter said.

“We stacked up all our moments today and it was probably the reason why we were so competitive within the game, because the girls made the most of their opportunities and their moments when they came.”

Highlighted by laying 40 more tackles than their opposition, Richmond impressed with their high intensity and work rate.

“I think that’s the Richmond brand that AFL and VFL supporters will notice, and I think that’s trickled down to the VFLW as well. The exciting thing about that is it means we’re putting a lot of pressure on the ball,” Hunter said.

“It’s awesome that they’re getting to the contest and turning up.”

The Tigers had two debutants on show, Ruby Edmeades and Jackie Radnall, who both stood out in their respective roles.

“It’s an opportunity for them to be able to play at that level. It gives them a great indication of what the level is about, and it’s really exciting when we can bring in girls that are learning our brand and learning our style,” Hunter said.

“It’s going to take time but the future is really bright for us.”

Forward sensation Courtney Wakefield’s accuracy both in front of goal and in the air was on full display. She claimed all three of Richmond’s goals and soared to an impressive eight marks.

“We speak about moments, and she’s certainly one that capitalises on all of them. She’s just got that presence out there on the field where she can take marks and kick goals. She is really well-valued within our side for what she brings,” Hunter said.

Young gun Sophie Damon also had a breakthrough performance. The 17-year-old moved into the ruck where she showcased her appetite for the contest and played with purpose.

Hunter said he was pleased with how Damon stepped up to the role and adapted to the occasion.

“We’re asking her to do things that we’d ask all our players to do, which is give us a contest,” Hunter said.

“She took some fantastic marks and put herself in really dangerous positions to get contact. And she’ll continue to grow as the game goes on.”

Phoebe Monahan once again prevailed as Richmond’s best. The ball magnet demonstrated her composure under pressure and her football smarts as she tallied team-highs of disposals (20), kicks (16), tackles (9), and clearances (5).

The Tigers head to Ikon Park next Saturday July 18 at 11:30am, where they will challenge Carlton in Round 12.

VFLW: Cats too strong for Tigers

Grace Kalac
August 4, 2018 5:20 PM

The VFLW Tigers have been outplayed by Geelong, 1.2 (8) to 10.7 (67), on Saturday afternoon at GMHBA Stadium in Round 13.

The Tigers travelled to the Cattery to face fourth-placed Geelong with hopes of a scalp. But the practiced opposition, who has benefitted from an additional year in the VFLW, was victorious in the battle of the felines.

Richmond was left behind in the first quarter as the home side accelerated to a 21-point lead.

The Tigers, however, ramped up their intensity in the second and restricted Geelong to just one major. But their hard work in defence meant they were fatigued when in possession, and they were not able to apply any scoreboard damage themselves.

The floodgates opened for the Cats in the third term and they stacked on six consecutive goals, widening the margin to 28 points.

But Richmond was resurgent in the final quarter. The Tigers’ energy on the field was amplified and they performed at the contest. Keeping Geelong goalless for the quarter, the Tigers snagged one of their own thanks to a set shot from Jess Gardner.

In true Richmond style, the Tigers fought until the final siren, but the third-quarter damage was done and the Cats prevailed as winners by 59 points.

Coach Tom Hunter said while the result was disappointing, Richmond’s fourth quarter performance was a promising indication of his side’s capabilities.

“That last quarter was a great blueprint of the way we want to look, it was just a shame that it took so long to be able to get there,” he said.

Eighteen-year-old debutant Tamara Smith excelled in her first game wearing a Richmond guernsey. The Murray Bushrangers 2018 Best and Fairest recipient and Vic Country representative thrived at the contest as she laid eight tackles.

“We’ve been really impressed with the way she goes about her football. She’s really quiet and unassuming but on the football field she loves to tackle, loves the contest, and we really value those things so she fitted in really well today,” Hunter said.

Hunter also praised defender Evie Burry’s efforts and her ability to stick to her role as a pillar in defence.

“More often than not, she’s going to beat her opponent. We’ve been really impressed with the way she’s grown and the steps she’s taken on her football journey with us,” he said.

Midfielder Kate Dempsey topped the team for disposals (15), closely followed by Lisa Davie (14) and Phoebe Monahan (14).

Richmond will return to Tigerland for Round 14 against Williamstown, their penultimate game of the season. Hunter said the match, which will be held on Sunday August 12 at 12.00pm, will be a great opportunity for a challenge back on home deck.

Heartbreak for VFLW Tigers against Seagulls

In heartbreaking fashion, the VFLW Tigers have fallen to Williamstown by one point in Round 14 on Sunday afternoon at the Swinburne Centre, 5.7 (37) to 5.8 (38).

It was a commanding start for Richmond, who welcomed back star forward Christina Bernardi as she slotted the opening goal, which was closely followed by a major from fellow Tiger Emma King.

The Tigers read each other effortlessly as they produced some classy passages of play and locked down Williamstown’s attempts to convert.

A snap out of traffic by Ella Ross in the second term extended Richmond’s leading margin to 18 points by half-time, as they held the Seagulls goalless.

But the Seagulls crept up on the Tigers in the third term as they accrued three quick goals and reduced the margin to seven points at the final break.

The fourth term was a tense affair. Williamstown managed one goal and two behinds early, stealing a one-point lead.

Tiger Kate Dixon responded with her second goal of the day to give the Tigers some breathing space, but Seagull Sharnie Whiting soon retaliated to reclaim the lead for Williamstown.

Richmond’s forward line fought hard to save the day in the dying minutes, but could not break through congestion. Thanks to their second-half turnaround, the Seagulls snatched victory against the Tigers for the second time this season.

It was a brave showing by the Tigers, who produced countless displays of grit and courage.

Coach Tom Hunter said despite the agonising result, he could not fault his side’s intensity.

“I’m never going to question the girls with their tackling pressure and their intent and their chasing, but just more around once we’ve got the ball, what we can do with it,” he said.

“I thought we controlled the game for probably close to three quarters but that last quarter got away from us a little bit. It’s amazing what one point either way will do.”

Youngster Alice Edmonds had a breakthrough day in the ruck, as she led Richmond to a successful 56-17 performance against their opposition in hit-outs. The 20-year-old also laid an equal team-high of six tackles.

“Alice did a fantastic job. She’s developed so much over the course of the year and what we’re seeing now is that we’ve got confidence and trust that we can kick it to her on her head and she does so well to mark it in long down the line contests,” Hunter said.

Ball-magnet Phoebe Monahan was ascendant in the midfield, punctuated by 24 touches, 22 kicks, six clearances and six inside 50s.

“Phoebe is so strong over the ball. She wins at the contest and she’s a great long kick so she can clear the area,” Hunter said.

“We’ll look to work on other things with Phoebe and continue to help her grow so when she goes back to GWS and AFLW 3, she has another string to her bow as a footballer.”

A Round 15 bye will allow the Tigers to be refreshed for their final game of the season against the Southern Saints in Round 16. Richmond will travel to Skybus Stadium for the closing round on Saturday August 25, with the first bounce at 11.00am.

“We’ve had seven on the trot so the girls definitely need a break,” Hunter said.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity to go down to Southern Saints territory and have a great game against another side that’s starting up from scratch this year.”

VFLW: Tigers outplay Saints in thrilling final round

The VFLW Tigers have finished the season on a high, recording a three-point win against the Southern Saints on Saturday at Skybus Stadium, 4.1 (25) to 3.4 (22).

The Round 16 contest was a thriller, with both maiden sides vying for a win to round out their debut seasons.

It was a fierce arm wrestle from the get-go, which resulted in a lack of scoring opportunities for both sides as they went goal-for-goal in the first half.

Thick fog blanketed Sybus Stadium as the Tigers adapted to the skinny ground, playing with determination as they thrived in the contest.

Christina Bernardi spearheaded Richmond’s plan of attack and sealed their first major with a monster kick that bounced all the way through.

By half-time, just one point separated the two sides.

The Southern Saints broke away in the third term, thanks to a set shot by Gabriella De Angelis.

But Richmond fought back with a beautiful passage of play by Jacqui Graham, Christina Bernardi and Kate Dixon, to reduce the margin to two points at the last change.

Inspired by Coach Tom Hunter’s message to make the most of the final 20 minutes of the season, the Tigers came into the fourth quarter roaring. They gathered momentum as they lifted their attacking pressure and communicated effectively.

Richmond took the lead for the first time when Bernardi executed out of traffic from 40 metres out, her second of the day.

Kate Dixon swiftly backed it up with her second, to extend Richmond’s lead to nine points with just a few minutes remaining.

In nerve-wracking fashion, one final surge from the Southern Saints saw the home side bridge the gap to a mere three points in the dying moments.

But Richmond’s fourth-quarter scoreboard damage was enough to secure the win.

Coach Hunter said he was proud of the girls’ efforts in bookending the season with opening and closing wins.

“It was an amazing of football, especially in that last quarter when it got really tense,” Hunter said.

“The Southern Saints are a fantastic side, we knew they’d put a lot of pressure on the contest, and we think we matched that and we tried to get them on the outside.”

Christina Bernardi displayed her football smarts as she hit her targets and amassed 24 touches, 18 kicks and eight tackles.

“She’s come back from AFLW commitments and played mid forward this week for plenty of the ball this week and used it really well and hit the scoreboard,” Hunter said.

Co-vice skipper and star forward Kate Dixon also played a pivotal role in forward line and showed composure in front of goal.

“Kate Dixon had a great game as well in front of the sticks. She’s started and finished the year really well, a credit to all her work,” Hunter

Alice Edmonds’ authority in the ruck gifted the Tigers first use, and her excellent game sense, punctuated by 15 touches, illustrated once again why she is a rising star.

“Her growth over the year has been amazing. She’s a really talented ruck and she’s been developing her kicking, and just her contest work and her second efforts are fantastic ,and things that we really value,” Hunter said.

But most importantly, Hunter praised the supportive, inclusive nature that his side has developed.

“It’s a really special year to be able to start from the ground up. We wanted to establish a Richmond brand that trickles down from AFL to VFL and VFLW,” Hunter said.

“We’re really proud of that and I’m really proud of the girls.”

From Prez Peggy O'Neal:

Q. Did the Board feel our first step into women’s football was a success? Do you think AFLW is a gimmick?

A. It was wonderful to see our VFLW team play for the first time in 2018. Members of the Board and management had the privilege of attending our inaugural VFLW best and fairest dinner and saw first-hand the passion these women have for the game and our Club. In my view, that was the most important measure of success in 2018 and we have now laid firm foundations for 2019 and the introduction of an AFLW team in 2020.

I certainly don’t believe AFLW is a gimmick but, as with initiatives of this magnitude, mistakes will be made and we will learn along the way. The most important thing is that we have the aspiration to build a thriving elite-level female competition and we look forward to playing our part in 2020.

VFLW Tigers roar with Round 1 win

Genevieve Thorpe
AFL Media
May 12, 2019

The VFLW Tigers have defeated the Darebin Falcons by 35 points in the opening round of the VFLW season at the Swinburne Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The team’s 12.7 (79) to 7.2 (44) victory capped a stellar debut for 12 fresh players.

The final score was also a drastic improvement from the two teams’ previous meeting in the 2018 season, where the Tigers were held goalless and lost by 39 points.

VFLW Tigers coach Tom Hunter said although more than half the team was officially taking to the field in the Yellow and Black for the first time, they were ready.

“I just felt our girls were really prepared going into the game, and knew what we wanted to do," Hunter told Roar Vision post-game.

Among the debutantes was Tayla Stahl-Smith, who booted six goals for the team.

Stahl-Smith supported the team across the ground throughout the match and helped to set up multiple other goals, including one for Emily Paterno from the forward pocket in the first quarter.

Hunter said Stahl-Smith had been working hard at her fitness since joining the team over the pre-season.

“She took a really big step forward today, on the back of the work that our midfield are doing and allowing her to be free on the forward line as well.”

Midfielder Jessica Kennedy, who continues in her role as captain for the 2019 season, collected 11 disposals, three inside 50s and three tackles.

Newcomer Millie Klingbeil (one goal, 10 disposals) also played an important role in connecting the midfield and forwardlines.

During the third quarter, Klingbeil went for a run and made a crucial pass to full-forward Courtney Wakefield, resulting in a nice team goal.

Another debutant Hannah Ibrahim (team-high 16 disposals, eight tackles, one goal) and 18-year-old midfielder Grace Egan (15 disposals) also had big days on-field.

The Tigers kept their defensive line solid before half-time, but struggled to clear the ball from full-back at times as the game wore on.

Darebin’s determination earned them four goals in the final quarter as they made a bid for a comeback win, but the Tigers eventually prevailed.

Hunter said the team will work on that late-game momentum in training in the weeks to come.

“We’ll take a lot of learnings out of this game, particularly late in quarters [and] staying engaged in the game, and that’s just going to make us a lot better,” he said.

Richmond will face the GWS AFLW side in a practice match next weekend, before resuming their VFLW campaign at the Swinburne Centre on May 25 against Essendon in the first of a Dreamtime triple-header.

VFLW Tigers victorious in Dreamtime clash

Genevieve Thorpe,
richmondfc.com.au
May 25, 2019

The VFLW Tigers opened Saturday's Dreamtime triple-header with a commanding 35-point win over Essendon at the Swinburne Centre.

The match began with a unity dance with players from both the Tigers and Bombers joining in.

The hosts then burst out of the blocks booting three of the game's four opening-term goals and eventually reigned victorious in front of the large crowd.

VFLW coach Tom Hunter said the girls focused on “setting the scene” for Saturday’s Dreamtime triple-header.

“We made it a really big focus to play our way and playing our Richmond brand, and I think the supporters who came out to watch would be really pleased with that," Hunter said.

The side was bolstered by the inclusions of recent AFLW signings Monique Conti and Katie Brennan, and both proved more than worthy of their Richmond stripes.

Brennan (20 disposals) fought hard throughout and eventually got rewarded on the scoreboard with two goals in the third quarter.

“Katie’s fantastic around the ball,” Hunter said. “She’s very clean, and she can kick both sides.”

Conti (18 disposals, including 13 handballs) made great efforts to support the Tigers over the duration of the match and ensured the ball rarely left their half.

Hunter valued Conti’s ability to “get the ball from inside to outside”.

“For them to come in and get away from the contest… and give our forwards first use of the ball, it was fantastic,” he said.

Alice Edmonds was a deserving recipient of the Aunty Joy Murphy Award after a convincing performance in the ruck.

Edmonds proved a true team player contributing six inside-50s, which resulted in scoring opportunities for her teammates.

Hunter said Edmonds was starting to develop her ruck craft, which came in good use this week.

“She just gave our ‘mids’ first use, and one of the reasons we were so successful in the game was because of her work,” he said.

Akec Makur Chuot (20 disposals, one goal) also proved a force to be reckoned with.

The 26-year-old kicked an incredible goal from 40 metres out running off half-back in the first quarter, and also kept immense pressure on every opponent she encountered.

“We love the way Akec goes about her footy,” Hunter said. “She’s such a valued member of our side, and we’re really lucky to have her.”

The VFLW Tigers are next in action against Melbourne Uni at Arden Street, North Melbourne on Saturday June 1 from 11:50am.

Hunter predicts tough competition against another undefeated team.

“Melbourne Uni are a fantastic side with their North Melbourne affiliate,” Hunter said.

“They’ve got some really dangerous players, and we’re really looking forward to the challenge.”

VFLW Tigers triumph over Melbourne Uni

The VFLW Tigers have registered a thrilling three-point win over Melbourne Uni in Round 4 at Arden Street Oval on Saturday.

The 5.7 (37) to 4.10 (34) victory marks the third consecutive win this season for the undefeated Tigers.

Richmond got off to a powerful start, holding Melbourne Uni goalless for the first half as the Tigers established an 18-point lead.

The Tigers created many opportunities for goal, and Tayla Stahl-Smith, Akec Makur Chuot, and Laura Bailey all scored majors before the half-time break.

Richmond worked hard to lock the ball in its forward half, with Alice Edmonds and Jenna Colwell's perseverance in the ruck giving the Tiger midfielders first use.

The home side brought plenty of ferocity to the field, and the Tigers worked hard to shake their persistent tackles.

But a resurgent Melbourne Uni kicked two goals late in the third quarter, capitalising on its inside-50 marks as the Mugars worked their way back into the game.

At three-quarter time, the Mugars had narrowed the margin to just four points as the Tigers struggled to counter their momentum.

The final quarter proved to be a nail-biter, with both teams scoring two goals apeice.

But the Tigers lifted their intensity to hold on for a three-point win.

VFLW Coach Tom Hunter said while the Tigers' pressure "fell away a bit in the third", the team persevered and finished on a high note.

“We probably let ourselves down in the third quarter. But full credit to our girls, they fully responded to the challenge and got the job done in the end,” Hunter said.

"(At three-quarter time) we just wanted to remind the girls [how] we wanted to look and behave.”

Richmond AFLW forward recruit Katie Brennan, who debuted as a Tiger last week, rose to the challenge and excelled in the final quarter.

Hunter said Brennan, who finished with 26 disposals, eight tackles and a goal, is a strong asset to the team.

“We’re really lucky that we have Katie at the Club, and we’re really proud that she wants to be a Richmond person,” Hunter said.

Grace Campbell also produced a stellar performance, collecting 19 disposals and laying 12 tackles.

Hunter said Campbell’s forward pressure was emblematic of a Richmond player.

“She’s got fantastic pressure. That’s our brand and that’s what we want to pride ourselves on,” he said.

The girls were cheered on by some of Richmond's AFLW recruits from the sidelines, including Sabrina Frederick.

Hunter said he was pleased to see the the team bolstered by Richmond’s strong support network.

“[The VFLW and AFLW] are essentially one program at the Richmond Football Club. We really pride ourselves on being able to connect and support each other,” he said.

The Tigers will look to keep their winning streak alive next Saturday, June 8 when they face Geelong in Round 5. The match will be held at the Swinburne Centre, with the first bounce set for 2.30pm.

VFLW Tigers outclass Geelong

Genevieve Thorpe

The VFLW Tigers have recorded a convincing 22-point win over Geelong at the Swinburne Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Prevailing 8.7 (55) to 5.3 (33), the undefeated Tigers added to their winning streak by earning a fourth consecutive win of the season.

Richmond got off to a solid start, as Tiger forward Jenna Colwell scored her first of two goals one minute after the first bounce, followed shortly by a goal from skipper Jess Kennedy.

It was a high-scoring first quarter, with five goals scored between the two sides, as the Tigers trailing by seven points at quarter time.

But the Tigers responded in the second term, dialling up their intensity to pile on five goals for the quarter and hold the Cats goalless.

VFLW Coach Tom Hunter said he encouraged the team to keep up the pressure on their opposition and make use of the space on the field.

“We just wanted to make sure our pressure around the ball was really good,” Hunter said.

“We put Geelong under the pump... used our numbers really well, and we were able to finish off on the scoreboard.”

Monique Conti took Hunter’s directions to heart, and her ferocity earned her a team-high 29 disposals, eight tackles and seven clearances.

Conti made herself available when needed and was vital in connecting Richmond’s midfield with their forward line throughout the game.

Hunter said he was pleased with the young midfielder’s efforts.

“She’s so young and she’s getting lots of the ball, but she’s putting pressure on as well,” he said.

“We’re very pleased with how she’s tracking along.”

Hunter also spoke highly of utility Jenna Colwell’s performance, commending her versatility.

“We love Jenna because she competes wherever she is. We throw her into the ruck, she competes there. We throw her forward, we know we’re going to get a contest from her,” Hunter said.

“She had a great pre-season and really stood out with her leadership, and she’s helping others get better around her.”

Star forward Katie Brennan once again impressed in the Yellow and Black, amassing 22 disposals and eight tackles.

As the sun disappeared and a cool change came along after half-time, the game slowed down.

Just one goal was scored in the third term, going Geelong’s way. The fourth quarter was similarly quiet, with both teams scoring one goal apiece.

But Richmond’s second-quarter scoreboard damage was done, and the Tigers proved too strong for the visiting side.

The Tigers made great efforts to lock the ball into their forward line, more than doubling the Cats’ inside-50s (31 to 13).

Hunter said he was impressed with his side’s ability to stick to their structures and play the Richmond brand of football.

“The pleasing thing for me is the way we’re playing,” Hunter said.

“We’re taking the game on. We’re moving the ball quickly. We’re defending really well.”

“It’s really pleasing as a coach that you can bring young players into the side and they fit right in,” he said.

The VFLW Tigers’ next challenge will be next Saturday, June 15, when they face the NT Thunder in Darwin for their first-ever interstate trip.

Hunter said the trip will provide an invaluable opportunity for the team to bond.

“We’re looking forward to the experience of getting on a plane together, spending a couple days together, and really building our connections,” Hunter said.

“It's a great challenge to be able to go play the Northern Territory, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity to play against a quality side.”

VFLW Tigers thunder past NT
Grace Kalac
AFL media
Jun 15, 2019 7:43PM[/i]

The VFLW Tigers have produced a stunning 21-point win over NT Thunder at TIO Stadium in Darwin on Saturday afternoon.

The undefeated Tigers were formidable in their first-ever interstate trip to surpass the experienced, high-pressure NT Thunder outfit in a true team performance.

It was a fast start for the Thunder, who controlled the ball in the first quarter but to no avail, managing just one goal to go with five behinds as the Tigers were held goalless.

Their inaccuracy gave the Tigers the chance to get back in the game, and Richmond seized the opportunity.

While NT Thunder held a 17-point lead early in the second quarter, the unshaken Tigers lifted their intent as they worked their way back into the match to cut the margin to three points at half-time.

Trio Courtney Wakefield, Katie Brennan and Jenna Colwell worked together seamlessly as they combined for Richmond’s three-goal second quarter.

Wakefield and Brennan finished with two goals apiece, while Tayla Stahl and Emily Paterno also joined in to boot majors.

The visiting Tigers continued their momentum over the second half to pile on four more goals and extend their lead.

A late surge by NT Thunder came with no reward, as the Tigers kept them goalless for the final quarter and stormed home in a gallant win.

The win didn’t come without its challenges, however, with the Tigers losing a number of key personnel, Evie Burry (knee), Lauren Tesoriero (knee) and Maddy Bracatisano (concussion) throughout the course of the afternoon.

VFLW coach Tom Hunter praised his side’s ability to adapt when faced with adversity.

“They were resilient. We threw them into a variety of roles and they just accepted the challenge and got the job done,” he said.

“I’m really pleased on the win but the way they fought it out…we hadn’t experienced pressure like that before.

“There was a lot of factors that went against us…and they toughed it out, they got the game back on our terms and to come away with the win is really pleasing.”

Richmond’s injury misfortunes provided the opportunity for a young Tiger, Hannah McLaren, to make her mark.

When Evie Burry went down, fellow defender McLaren stepped up in her best Richmond outing to date.

“She took (the opportunity) with both hands and she went back and took some really strong one-on-one marks,” Hunter said.

“That’s all we ask from our defenders, to give us a contest and beat their opponents and Hannah certainly did that today.”

In Alice Edmonds’ absence, ruckwoman Gabby Seymour shone in a dazzling debut for Richmond.

A former Australian volleyball representative, Seymour showcased her aerial ability as she dominated hit-outs. The smooth-mover showed composure with ball in hand and jelled with her Tiger teammates.

“She’s a cracker,” Hunter said.

“This is her first year of footy… She gave us contest in the air and won some balls she probably shouldn’t have won. It’s awesome to see her develop as a footballer, we’re really lucky that she’s in the Yellow and Black.”

The win was the cherry on top of a fantastic bonding weekend in the Top End for the VFLW Tigers.

“We’re at the Club for three sessions a week and of that time, it’s used mainly on football,” Hunter said.

“So, to have them sharing lunch together, sharing stories, building their connections, it’s really special.”

After a bye next weekend, the VFLW Tigers will be back in action for Round 8 against the Casey Demons on Sunday June 30 at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo.

Kodi Jacques shines in debut VFLW season with Tigers

Anthony Pinda
Bendigo Advertiser
27 June 2019

When Bendigo's Kodi Jacques was growing up her dream was to play football on the big stage.

Surrounded by siblings who were footy obsessed - including Bridgewater FNC's Liam Jacques - the foundations were set for career on the oval.

"I've always had a footy in my hand since I was born," Kodi Jacques said.

"But when I was growing up I really didn't know about all the pathways to women's football.

"I played netball for the Heathcote Saints for nine years but one day I attended a talent identification day for football.

"I asked my mum if I could switch over to football, my parents always knew I had a natural talent for it."

And the rest is history, after learning the craft as a player with the Bendigo Thunder and Pioneers, before too long the opportunity to play with the Richmond Tigers in the VFLW emerged.

Jacques is currently in her debut season with the Tigers and is enjoying every single moment of it.

"The first few practice matches and games were a little daunting playing against some AFLW players, but now I'm finding my feet and putting together some really strong game performances," Jacques said.

Jacques was named in the VFLW's Team of the Week for her top performance during the Tigers' round five 22-point victory over Geelong, final scores 8.7 (55) over 5.3 (33).

Jacques booted two goals in the game and was also named among the team's best on ground .

"During that match it was my first game with Richmond in the forward line. I was tucked down there and managed to get on the end of a few good goals," Jacques said.

She feels most comfortable playing across the mid-field but declares she is able to play a variety of positions.

"As long as I'm on the ground, I'm happy to play wherever," Jacques said.

Jacques' dedication to the sport involves frequent trips up and down the Calder Highway several times per week to attend training sessions with the Tigers.

Jacques will have the opportunity to play with the Tigers this Sunday against the Casey Demons on Bendigo's Queen Elizabeth Oval for round eight of the VFLW season, game starts at 1pm.

"Hopefully we will get a few people down for the game," Jacques said.

"All my family and friends will be down to watch. It's always good to get back to where you are from to give back to the community."

The Tigers currently sit second on the VFLW ladder with an undefeated 5-0 record and will head into this weekend's match filled with confidence following a 21-point win over NT Thunder during round six, final scores 7.7 (49) over 3.10 (28).

The Tigers will BE fielding a team in the AFLW next season and if Jacques continues on her current hot-streak, the opportunity to fulfill her dream of playing in the nation's top league is more than possible.

"It would be amazing, its everything I have ever wanted to do," she said.

"Even when the AFLW wasn't around I would always say to Liam that I wanted to be the first girl to play in the league.

"Hopefully I can make the team by continuing with top form and putting in all of the hardwork."

Most sportswomen and men drop names of world superstars as their biggest influence.

However, for Jacques it's a whole lot closer to home - it's older brother Liam.

"He and my family have always been so supportive. He is my biggest influence and I've wanted to copy and do whatever he does," Jacques said.

"I always remember watching him play footy when I was younger and thinking, one day I would love to have a crack at that."

VFLW Tigers eclipse Demons

Genevieve Thorpe

The VFLW Tigers have stormed home to a 39-point win against the Casey Demons at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo on Sunday afternoon.

The undefeated Tigers returned refreshed from last weekend’s bye to record a 9.11 (65) to 4.2 (26) victory, marking their sixth consecutive win of the season.

The Round 8 clash kicked off with a strong start from both the Tigers and the Demons. It was a fierce contest from the get-go, with both sides matched for goals in the first quarter (two goals), second quarter (three goals) and third quarter (four goals).

The Tigers struggled to break away from the Demons as rain and cold wind replaced the sunny conditions, and their home turf grew slippery and troublesome.

Richmond’s scoreboard impact was hampered by their 11 behinds to Casey’s two, and at three-quarter time, the Tigers held a slender eight-point lead.

But the Tigers surged in the fourth quarter as they piled on five goals to run out with a comfortable win.

VFLW Coach Tom Hunter said he was pleased with how girls fared in the conditions, and how they responded to Casey’s high-pressure game.

“Casey put in a great performance, so for our girls to tough it out and get the game going our way, was really pleasing,” he said.

Hunter praised the Tigers’ quality final quarter, where their five goals came in a matter of minutes, courtesy of Laura Bailey, Tayla Stahl and skipper Jess Kennedy.

Bailey and Stahl were damaging up forward, finishing with three goals apiece.

“The last quarter is a good reflection of the way we want to play, just our ability to get the ball to the outside and then take the ball on a little bit more,” Hunter said.

“We were playing good football (for the first three quarters), but we weren’t getting the results on the scoreboard.

“To open the game up a little bit and make the most of our opportunities forward of the ball was a lovely way to finish the game off.”

Richmond made seven changes to its side for the Casey match, which included three Tigers playing their first game of the year.

Hunter said the Tigers’ performance was emblematic of the style they want to play, and highlighted the strength of the Richmond system to stand up despite missing key personnel.

“When the game was there to be won, they really stepped up in one-on-one contests and our pressure was really good,” Hunter said.

“I think that shows we have a lot of depth in the VFLW program and we have a lot of girls who can come in and not only play well, but play to the level, which is really exciting to me.”

The Tigers thrived at their home away from home, with Bendigo Thunder products Jess Kennedy, Kodi Jacques, Sarah Last and Grace Campbell relishing the opportunity to be back at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Campbell had a busy day in her hometown, racking up 12 tackles and 16 disposals as she played an important role in the Tigers’ final-term pressure.

Hunter commended Campbell’s ability to “make something happen” when she had her hands on the ball.

“She was fantastic… she just loves the contest and we really value her for that,” he said.

“We’re going to see great growth from her over the back half of the year.”

AFLW signing Hannah Burchell came off the ground in the second quarter with a suspected lower leg injury.

The Tigers will look to add to their winning streak next Saturday, 6 July when they face the Western Bulldogs at VU Whitten Oval at 4.00pm.

VFLW Tigers undone by Bulldogs

The VFLW Tigers have suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Western Bulldogs 4.4 (28) to 2.10 (22) on Saturday afternoon at VU Whitten Oval.

It was a slow start for both sides, with the Tigers held goalless for the first quarter and the Bulldogs managing just one major.

Highly-anticipated Richmond Women’s debutant Sabrina Frederick slotted Richmond’s first of the day in the second quarter, marking Katie Brennan’s pass then converting her set-shot with ease.

One goal apiece in the second term saw Richmond hold a slender one-point lead at the main break, struggling to impact the scoreboard with eight behinds.

The Tigers dominated one-on-one contests and tackles in the first half, obtaining 41 tackles compared to the Bulldogs’ 21.

The Western Bulldogs’ opportunities for goals were thwarted by half-back Jenna Colwell, who was a brick wall in defence.

Tayla Stahl showcased her forward craft with a goal in the third term, but the Bulldogs quickly answered back. At three-quarter time, Richmond held onto a one-point advantage.

The final quarter was a fiery arm-wrestle. Relentless tackles saw the Tigers and Bulldogs scramble for the ball down the centre of the field, as the clock ticked over to the final siren.

The Bulldogs kicked the sole final-quarter goal, which was enough to cement a six-point victory for the home side.

VFLW coach Tom Hunter said the Tigers’ game took a toll when their pressure dropped away after half-time and the Bulldogs lifted.

“We knew they were strong around the contest, and they brought a pressure we probably haven’t experienced just yet,” he said.

“The second quarter was definitely played on our terms, and that reflected in the one-on-one contests and tackles.

“It just shows that when our [one-on-one contests and tackles] aren’t there, sides can work their way into the game against us.”

Hunter said it was exciting to finally have a chance to use Frederick on field the after months of work behind the scenes.

“For her to do the work that she’s done and to get the opportunity to represent the Yellow and Black, we’re really proud of how she’s going,” he said.

“We know she’s got so much growth in our program and in our system, so we’re excited to see her in the next few weeks.”

Akec Makur Chuot shone on the field, collecting 16 disposals and playing a crucial role in clearing the ball down the wing.

Hunter credited her versatility.

“She was fantastic. We tried her in a couple of different positions, just to see where we can get the best out of her,” he said.

“We know what she can do down back, and we really value that.”

The Tigers will return to the Swinburne Centre to face Melbourne University next Sunday, July 14th at 2.00pm, after defeating the Mugars by three points back in Round 4.

Hunter said the Tigers will continue to focus on playing to their strengths as they work towards the upcoming contest.

“We just need to make sure we bring what we’re good at, and we recognise what the opposition’s strengths are as well,” Hunter said.

“We’re ready for another great contest.”

Coach Tom Hunter said the Tigers struggled against a quality, experienced Melbourne Uni outfit and were unable to get the ball on their terms.

“We got beaten in the contest, and it makes it hard to compete across the ground if we’re being beaten in the contest so easy,” he said.

“We had a young midfield, Kodi Jacques, Grace Egan, and Maddy Brancatisano started on the inside. All 18 year olds and up against some really quality AFLW footballers,” Hunter said.

“It was a great challenge for them and we wanted them to learn from that.”

The VFLW Tigers’ next challenge will be Hawthorn on Sunday, July 21 at Box Hill City Oval at 11.30am.

VFLW Tigers go down to Hawks

Genevieve Thorpe

The VFLW Tigers have suffered their third defeat of the season, going down to Hawthorn by 13 points at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.

Both teams were eager to make a fierce impression in their first meeting of the year, but the Hawks withstood a fast finish from the Tigers to run away with a 7.9 (51) to 6.2 (38) win.

It was a tight contest in the first term, with each team scoring two goals apiece with a one-point margin in the Hawks’ favour.

Grace Egan got the ball rolling for the Tigers with an early first-quarter goal, her first major in the Yellow and Black.

Egan continued to establish her presence across the four quarters as she collected 17 disposals and 13 kicks.

Sabrina Frederick added another goal to her name shortly after, a kick from long range that sailed all the through to cut the Hawks’ lead to just one point.

But the Tigers grew lethargic after the first quarter, and the Hawks registered two more goals before half-time, leaving the Tigers scoreless for the second term.

The Hawks’ strong attack penetrated the Tigers’ defence, and the Tigers laboured as they tried to counteract it.

Both the Tigers and Hawks kicked two goals each in the third quarter, allowing the Hawks to hold onto their 16-point lead.

In a highlight of the day, Gabby Seymour booted her first goal as a Tiger, notably elevating the Tigers’ spirits.

The Tigers returned reinvigorated after the three-quarter time break and they matched the Hawks’ intensity in the final quarter.

Grace Campbell commanded the midfield, racking up 16 disposals and laying eight tackles.

The fourth term showcased the Tigers’ grit as they secured two majors and limited the Hawks to just one goal.

Unfortunately, however, it was too late for the Tigers to overcome the Hawks’ early advantage.

Despite the loss, coach Tom Hunter said he was pleased with the team’s strong finish.

“We knew it was going to be a challenge from the start, but I thought we played two really good quarters of footy, our first and our last,” Hunter said.

“We probably lost our way a little bit in the second and third.”

Courtney Wakefield returned from her three-week layoff refreshed, racking up four tackles and a goal, while Frederick asserted herself with two goals.

Frederick and Wakefield proved to be a deadly duo in the forward line.

Hunter said he looks forward to Wakefield and Frederick building their own signature style in the forward line.

“They’re two really dominant players in the air, and a couple more weeks of them playing together will get their synergy up,” Hunter said.

Hunter praised Frederick’s strong competitiveness.

“She competed really well, she took marks, she kicked goals [and it] shows what an exciting player she’s going to be for the club,” he said.

The VFLW Tigers will return for Round 12 against top-of-the-table Collingwood at the Swinburne Centre next Sunday, July 28 at 11.00am.

VFLW Tigers overpower Seagulls

The VFLW Tigers are back on the winners’ list after an emphatic 48-point win over Williamstown on Sunday at the Swinburne Centre.

The 7.16 (58) to 1.4 (10) victory satisfied the ravenous Tigers, who came into the clash off the back of four straight losses.

Tiger forward Sabrina Frederick got Richmond off to a flying start with an early goal from the forward pocket.

Frederick’s goal spurred the Tigers’ intensity, and they locked the ball inside their forward 50m as they pursued goal after goal.

However, they were left with two goals and 10 behinds at quarter-time as they struggled to translate their opportunities into majors.

Richmond added another goal and two behinds in the second term to extend their lead to 24 points, as the Tigers’ excellent defensive pressure kept Williamstown scoreless for the first half.

The Tigers reappeared refreshed and animated after the half-time break, and booted a flurry of three goals within minutes courtesy of Monique Conti, Maddy Brancatisano and Jenna Colwell.

Conti’s goal was her first in the Yellow and Black, her teammates flocking around her in celebration.

A last-minute goal by Sabrina Frederick wrapped up an exciting third term, establishing a convincing 50-point lead.

It was a quieter final term, with both teams scoring one goal apiece, Williamstown’s sole major of the day.

Bolstered by a late-term goal by Grace Egan, the unwavering Tigers prevailed.

Egan was prolific, racking up a team-high 19 disposals to go with six clearances and five tackles.

Hunter spoke highly of Egan’s performance and her progress at Tigerland.

“It feels like Grace has been part of the program for a while, but she’s still only 19, which is exciting for us,” Hunter said.

“She’s a really long-term player for the footy club, in particular for this program, so we’re really pleased with the way she’s going.”

Conti was a welcome return to the side, dominating the midfield as she collected 18 disposals, two goals and five tackles.

Hunter praised her stellar performance.

“The way she attacks the contest, she’s so quick on the inside, and it was fantastic to see her kick two goals today from the midfield,” Hunter said.

Young gun Sophie Damon also returned for her first game since the 2018 season with a solid performance across half-back.

The VFLW Tigers’ next challenge will be Carlton next Saturday, August 10 at LaTrobe University at 11.00am.

VFLW Tigers dominate Blues

Genevieve Thorpe

The VFLW Tigers have recorded a commanding 48-point win over Carlton at Ikon Park on Saturday afternoon.

The 10.9 (69) to 3.3 (21) victory marked back-to-back wins for the Tigers, and was an important opportunity for the side to consolidate their position within the top six.

The Tigers were met with slippery conditions at Ikon Park as the first bounce came with a drizzle of rain.

The wet and windy conditions were not conducive to scoring and both sides remained goalless for the first quarter.

But the gloomy weather did not dampen the Tigers’ spirits. Richmond returned after the first break rejuvenated and ready to pounce.

Key forward Courtney Wakefield got the ball rolling for the Tigers, securing the first major of the game early in the second term.

Tayla Stahl built on Wakefield’s momentum with two goals within two minutes.

Stahl was prolific, finishing the game with three majors, four marks and six tackles.

A late goal to Tiger debutant Teagan Brett stretched Richmond’s lead to 24 points at half-time.

Brett, a Murray Bushrangers product and Vic Country representative, had an outstanding first game in the Yellow and Black, booting three goals from 11 disposals.

The Tigers attacked the third quarter with a flurry of four goals in a five-minute period, courtesy of Monique Conti, Tayla Stahl, Jenna Colwell and skipper Jess Kennedy, holding Carlton goalless for that term.

The final term opened with a goal by Hannah Ibrahim before Carlton snagged two consecutive goals.

But thanks to Richmond’s rock-solid defence, led by Phoebe Monahan, the Blues were kept to just three goals for the entirety of the match as the Tigers secured a convincing win.

Monique Conti starred as she led the team for disposals (26), tackles (7), clearances (8) and inside-50s (5).

She created opportunities for Richmond’s forwards and provided excellent delivery inside 50.

The Tigers dominated hit-outs (52-13), with Alice Edmonds stellar in the ruck as she gave Richmond’s midfielders first use.

Kennedy racked up 11 disposals and three tackles, as well as a left-foot goal in the third term.

Richmond VFLW coach Tom Hunter commended her for excelling both in her leadership and in her performance on the field.

“I’m really proud of the way JK’s been playing. She leads us in and around the contest,” said Hunter.

“She’s been doing very well and we’re very proud of how she’s leading the girls, but also how she’s playing herself."

The VFLW Tigers will return home to the Swinburne Centre next Saturday, 17 August to face the Western Bulldogs at 12.30pm.

The Tigers met the Bulldogs in Round 9, where the Bulldogs were victorious by a narrow six points.

Hunter said the Tigers look forward to the opportunity to play the high-contest side again.

“I envision it’s going to be a high-contest, high-tackling game, so we’ll really embrace that and look forward to that,” Hunter said.

“We learned a lot of lessons the last time we played the Bulldogs, so it’s going to be a really great opportunity.”

The VFLW Tigers have been outplayed by the Western Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, falling to a 43-point loss at the Swinburne Centre.

The 3.2 (20) to 10.3 (63) defeat broke the Tigers’ winning streak following two triumphant wins over Williamstown and Carlton.

The Bulldogs opened the floodgates from the first bounce and scored a goal per minute for the first three minutes of the game, securing an early 18-point advantage.

The Tigers hit back at the end of the first quarter when the ball was passed through the Bulldogs’ defence.

Sabrina Frederick pounced on the loose ball and slotted the Tigers’ first of the day with an impressive soccer goal off her left boot.

The Tigers dialled the intensity up a notch in the second term, which resulted in a goal drought for both sides.

Recently-signed AFLW Tiger Kodi Jacques proved to be a valuable asset for the Tigers as she relentlessly drove the ball forwards, racking up a team-high six clearances to go with 14 disposals and five tackles.

A score recount at half-time awarded the Bulldogs with an extra point, extending their lead to 18 points at the main break.

The third quarter commenced with a duo of goals for the Bulldogs.

While the ball remained in the Tigers’ forward 50 for the majority of the third quarter, Richmond was unable to capitalise as the Bulldogs hindered the Tigers’ opportunities.

Richmond’s sole goal of the third term went to Jenna Colwell, who was celebrating her 50th VFL game, after she marked a pass from Frederick in front of goal.

The Bulldogs crammed in a final third-quarter goal minutes before the siren, which elevated their lead to 29 points at the last break.

The Tigers had a moment of celebration in the fourth term when Alana Woodward booted her first major of the season.

Woodward was ruthless as she showcased her trademark intensity, laying a team-high seven tackles.

She had the challenging task of manning up against some of the Bulldogs’ best midfielders and performed admirably.

Despite the Tigers’ efforts, the Bulldogs kept the ball on their terms for the remainder of the game, and they surged home with a string of four goals to secure the win.

As a result, the Bulldogs leapfrogged the Tigers on the ladder, where they now sit in third and fourth place respectively.

Monique Conti impressed with a team-high 21 disposals along with three clearances and four inside-50s, as she and Jacques formed a lethal midfield combination.

The VFLW Tigers will face the Southern Saints in the final round of the home and away season next Saturday, August 24 at Trevor Barker Beach Oval, Sandringham at 12.00pm.

VFLW Tigers surpass Saints in thriller

The VFLW Tigers have defeated the Southern Saints by six points in a thrilling contest on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval in the final round of the home and away season.

The 5.6 (36) to 4.6 (30) triumph over the Saints, who came into the clash on top of the ladder, confirmed the Tigers' spot in the finals and secured Richmond fourth place on the ladder.

In swirly conditions, both sides struggled to hit the scoreboard early on.

Tiger Monique Conti was a clear standout from the get-go as she exerted her trademark pressure.

The midfielder excelled with a team-high 20 disposals and six clearances to go with six tackles.

The first quarter concluded without majors for both teams, and both the Tigers and Saints dialled up the intensity in the following quarter.

Sabrina Frederick notched the first goal of the day early in the second term after marking a pass from Tayla Stahl.

Frederick and Stahl teamed up with Courtney Wakefield to form a powerful forward line.

The Saints responded with a goal of their own minutes later but the Tigers soon fired back with two more goals by Monique Conti and Tayla Stahl, allowing a four-point lead at half-time.

The beachside wind escalated after the half-time break and both sides struggled to follow the unpredictable ball.

The erratic weather made for scrappy football, and both teams were scoreless in the third term until the Saints secured a major at the ten-minute mark.

The Saints proceeded to capture another goal seconds before the three-quarter time siren sounded, providing them with a 10-point lead over the Tigers at the final change.

The Tigers pursued the football in the final quarter with unmatched pressure.

Frederick was hungry for more, and soon registered another major minutes into the final term.

Soon after, Jenna Colwell marked the ball in the right forward pocket, and overcame the unpredictable gusts of wind to kick a triumphant goal.

Three more behinds for the Tigers, combined with Colwell and Frederick’s efforts, earned the Tigers a slender six-point lead with 11 minutes remaining.

The Tigers withstood the Saints’ attempts to level the scoreboard in the dying minutes, sustaining their lead until the final siren sounded to record a thrilling come-from-behind win.

The unwavering Tigers were boosted by the return of Katie Brennan, who produced an excellent performance.

Brennan excelled in the final quarter and finished with an impressive 16 disposals, three marks and four inside-50s.

Key defender Rebecca Miller had a sturdy performance down back, clearing the ball from the back pocket repeatedly as she collected 15 disposals and three tackles.

VFLW Coach Tom Hunter said the girls played exceptionally well against a top side.

“We knew it was going to be a tough battle,” Hunter said.

“I thought our girls really matched them with our pressure. We looked like Richmond. We’re really proud of that."

Hunter commended his team’s pressure and intensity and said they are thrilled to be entering the finals.

“It’s a great little stepping stone towards what will be an exciting finals series,” Hunter said.

The VFLW Tigers’ finals schedule will be confirmed at richmondfc.com.au over the coming days.

Our girls couldn't repeat the boys last quarter comeback. Fell short by only 5 points and have been eliminated.

A scoreless third quarter and inaccuracy (5 more scoring shots compared to the straight kicking Bulldogs) proved costly.

Throw in a 50 metre penalty not paid with 10 second to go

High contact and then a dangerous tackle and all the umps did was report the bulldog player and pay the free on the 50 arc.

Apply the rules = 50 metres and we get a shot at goal from the goal line after the siren.

Pathetic umpiring all day  :banghead

Seems to be par for the course most games  :help.

The men's on Saturday was no different. We copped a 50m for a Essendon player taking a dive. The Bomber rubbed CCJ's head and in retaliation CCJ gave him a slight go away push into the chest. The Bomber then collapses backwards like he had been shot and the ump fell for it  ::).

VFLW Tigers go down to Bulldogs in elimination final

Genevieve Thorpe
AFL media
Sep 2, 2019

The VFLW Tigers’ season has come to an end after a heartbreaking five-point elimination final loss to the Western Bulldogs on Sunday at Adcon Stadium.

The 6.0 (36) to 4.7 (31) loss was the VFLW Tigers’ first ever final, following a successful home and away season which concluded with the Tigers fourth on the ladder.

The Tigers and the Bulldogs approached the must-win game with red-hot intensity, with both sides hitting the scoreboard early.

The Bulldogs claimed the first goal at the three-minute mark before the Tigers booted their first major, courtesy of Courtney Wakefield.

Wakefield seized her goal after an impressive mark in the forward pocket following a nice pass from Tayla Stahl.

Not long after, Stahl nabbed a goal herself from 30 metres after a pass from Sabrina Frederick.

The Bulldogs fired back, however, with two consecutive goals, establishing a five-point lead over Tigers at quarter time.

The Bulldogs notched another goal one minute into the second term, but the Tigers soon hit back with their trademark intensity as Gabby Seymour secured their third major.

Richmond’s intensity was bolstered by a commanding performance by Kodi Jacques, who laid a team-high five tackles in the first half.

But the Tigers struggled to impact the scoreboard as the crosswind picked up throughout the second term.

Richmond locked the ball inside its forward 50m for the majority of the second quarter, but was unable to capitalise on its opportunities.

The second half concluded with the Bulldogs clutching onto a slim four-point advantage.

The Bulldogs maintained their lead across the third quarter, breaking away with two unanswered goals.

The Tigers fought to overcome the Bulldogs’ 16-point advantage in the final term. Courtney Wakefield and Sabrina Frederick both snagged one goal each, leaving just a five-point difference.

With a nail-biting 90 seconds on the clock remaining, Katie Brennan came close to honing in on a goal of her own, but the Bulldogs prevailed with a five-point victory.

It was a gallant effort by the Tigers, who dominated inside-50s 33-17, but the Bulldogs’ accuracy in front of goal proved too damaging, and the Tigers were unable to convert their chances.

Brennan had a stellar performance, playing an integral role in the midfield as she laid four tackles and collected 18 disposals, including seven clearances.

Midfield duo Grace Egan and Kate Dempsey were also prolific with an impressive 19 disposals and five clearances apiece.

Defender Phoebe Monahan continued her excellent form, securing 10 disposals and five inside-50s.

Despite the loss, 2019 has proven to be a highly successful season for the VFLW Tigers, who have shown enormous progression after finishing 12th on the ladder last year.

The finals outing will also provide the Tigers with valuable experience as they prepare to enter the AFLW in 2020.

Apparently he was also mouthing off all day at our players as well. So it was karma when he got pinged in the last for holding the ball which got us back within a kick. All our forwards let him know about it too  :thumbsup.

VFLW players will also get to show their talents in a four-team 'super series' to be staged in September this year.

The round of matches will allow players in the competition to press their claims to be picked in the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft which will be held later this season.

The VFLW super series will see each team play three matches before an All-Star clash is held, which will see the best players from across the series selected.

With 10 of the 12 VFLW clubs tied to AFL clubs, the League had to find another way to get its season up and going following the coronavirus-enforced suspension earlier this year.

AFL Victoria will in coming weeks work through the selection process for its VFLW super series, which will see 120 of the competition's best players take the field.

Despite being a huge club and making an operating profit again last season (thanks to loyal fans like us), we still persist with the terrible decision to affiliate with Port Melbourne whilst the Bulldogs, Dees, Hawks, Bombers, Pies, Cats, Saints and even lowly and poor North Melbourne can find money to support its VFLW program  :rollin

It’s good to know the club is really serious about the development of its AFLW program  :banghead

How can we expect players like Reid (pick 5) to develop in such a disconnect? Pathetic.

From our departing president Peggy

Our VFLW affiliate Port Melbourne continues to provide opportunities for some of our younger AFLW-listed players and while it has been a difficult season for the team so far, it is providing an invaluable learning environment.”

If the BULLDOGS and SAINTS and even the KANGAROOS  :banghead can all have a VFLW side
And if new comers like Hawks and Bombers can have a vflw side

WHY DO WE HAVE AN AFFILIATION WITH PORT MELBOURNE? :banghead :banghead :banghead

Our affiliation with Coburg never worked either why would the club think this a a good idea?

Not enough money? Too expensive?

Explain to me how the kangaroos have a vflw team?

Why are we persisting with this rubbish it’s a wonder how any of the girls want to play for us considering how much we don’t take the AFLW program seriously.
