Title: Injury update [merged]
Post by: one-eyed on December 05, 2017, 12:48:34 PM
Injury update from Peter Burge:

Kane Lambert had very minor knee surgery and resumed running about four weeks ago. So he’s going great at the moment and will resume training this week, once he’s back from Tasmania with the young guys.

Dion Prestia had very minor ankle surgery post-season and has resumed running. He’s been running now for about four weeks, but we’ll progress his program really carefully and have him in with the main group post-Christmas at this stage.

Jayden Short and Oleg Markov both had shoulder surgeries and are in the ‘rehab’ group at the moment. No contact skills for them at this stage, but they’re doing plenty of conditioning . . . They’ll do some no-contact skills in the next two to three weeks.”

Medical room: Who's on the injury list at your club?

RICHMOND

Premiership midfielder Dion Prestia is due to resume full training after Christmas as he recovers from planned ankle surgery after carrying an injury through the 2017 season. He is running and taking part in some non-contact drills.

Young star Daniel Rioli, who suffered a broken foot in the final quarter of the Grand Final, is out of a moonboot and completing a rehab program, which includes cross training and weights. He is on track to start running early in the new year, but in some doubt for round one.

While Kane Lambert underwent post-season knee surgery, he was able to join a young group of Tigers for a hiking trip in Tasmania and resumed running four weeks ago.

Defenders Jayden Short, Oleg Markov and David Astbury all underwent post-season shoulder surgery and are on modified training, running laps early in the pre-season and avoiding all contact drills.

Rule them out for round one:

Burge said young midfielder Nathan Drummond was on track to start full skills work by the start of February as he recovers from a second knee reconstruction, with the 23-year-old pushing to be available for round one selection.

Ruckman Shaun Hampson is also on a modified program at the moment as he manages a back issue that restricted him for the majority of 2017.

"We're expecting him to come back to football (drills) really soon," Burge said.

RICHMOND

While the Tigers had a slew of post-season surgeries, their rehab group has whittled down significantly in recent weeks. Dion Prestia (ankle), Kane Lambert (knee), and Jayden Short, Oleg Markov and David Astbury (all shoulders) have recovered from surgery and will be available for round one barring any setbacks. Ruckman Shaun Hampson continues to battle with a back complaint, however, and it is difficult to see him featuring in the early rounds.

Rule him out:
Shaun Hampson, back, TBC

Racing to be ready:
Premiership forward Daniel Rioli is still on modified training after surgery to repair a broken foot at the end of last season and in doubt for round one. He completed his first running session at the end of January and is being re-educated on his running technique after such a long period off legs. The 20-year-old recently had follow-up surgery to remove a plate from his foot, with coach Damien Hardwick committed to taking a conservative approach with his rehab.

INJURY LIST

Daniel Rioli (foot)

Toby Nankervis (concussion)

Nathan Broad (club suspension)

Shaun Hampson (back)

Nathan Drummond (knee)

Toby Nankervis suffered concussion in the Tigers’ big win over Essendon in Wangaratta on Saturday and played no further part in the match. Richmond’s second JLT game isn’t until March 7, so the ruckman should be OK to play again before Round 1. The biggest concern is Daniel Rioli, who is back running after surgery on the foot he hurt in the Grand Final win, but is only an outside chance of playing in Round 1. Shaun Hampson remains on a modified program and Nathan Drummond is increasing his workload as he aims to make a comeback from a second knee reconstruction.

Not much to report for the Tigers, with everything seemingly going swimmingly at Punt Road.

The Tigers face the Kangaroos on Wednesday. Toby Nankervis suffered concussion in the big win over Essendon in Wangaratta but should be OK to return.

The biggest concern remains Daniel Rioli, who is back running after surgery on the foot he hurt in the Grand Final win. But he is only an outside chance of playing in Round 1. Hardwick said Prestia and Houli were touch and go for round one.

Prestia suffered a minor hamstring injury in mid-February but is yet to play and could now miss the season opener as the Tigers take a cautious approach with the midfielder.

"He's touch and go at the moment," Hardwick said. "We're confident, but we just want to make sure. He's such an important player for us.

"This time of year everyone wants to be ready for round one, but we've just got to make sure those guys are ready for a long season. It's an endurance race."

Richmond's premiership stars in a race against the clock

Georgie Dennis -
zerohanger.com
15 March 2018

Richmond‘s Bachar Houli and Dion Prestia are running out of time to be fit for their round one clash against Carlton in a week’s time.

The pair have been battling soft tissue injuries over the preseason to the calf (Houli) and hamstring (Prestia).

While they are making good progress and have pushed to be ready for their season opener it is unlikely the Tigers will take any risks with their premiership heroes.

“We have still got several training sessions to go. We haven’t given up on either of them, but we will be conservative with them,” Richmond footy boss Neil Balme told heraldsun.com.au.

“They are both keen to play but we won’t be taking any risks with them. Dion slightly hurt himself, then slightly hurt it again.

“That might count against him. We don’t want to take any risks.”

Richmond will also be without Daniel Rioli who still hasn’t recovered from the foot fracture he suffered in the Grand Final and Nathan Broad who is under a club suspension.

Rioli’s likely replacement is small forward Shai Bolton who is coming into his second AFL season and Jayden Short or Reece Conca could come in for Broad.

Broad is suspended for the first three rounds of the season in the wake of the topless female photo scandal.

He is allowed to play in the VFL, however their season doesn’t kick off until April 1.

In the meantime, he is expected to play VFL practice matches along with the rest of his Richmond teammates not selected in the senior team.

Shaun Hampson is the other Tiger who is unlikely to be fit for round one with the ruckman suffering and ongoing back complaint and needing another epidural to ease the pain.

Despite a few injury niggles, Balme believes the Tigers have put in a good pre-season.

“We are in good shape. Only Shaun Hampson hasn’t done that much. He is getting more work done on his back,” Balme added.

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge provides an update on the injury status of Dion Prestia, Bachar Houli, Shaun Hampson, Daniel Rioli and Nathan Drummond.

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2018-03-16/injury-update-prestia-houli-rioli

-----------------------------------------------------------

Dion Prestia

“Dion had his ankle surgery pre-Christmas and resumed training with the group in January and then just had a little minor hamstring injury just before the JLT series. So he’s back training with the group now and we’re just yet to determine whether he’s ready to go next week or not.”

Bachar Houli

“Bachar had been training well. He just pulled up a little bit sore after the game against Essendon in Wangaratta, but he was back with the group today doing footy training and like Dion we’re just going to determine over the next couple of days his availability for next week, but it’s looking really positive.”

Shaun Hampson

“Shaun’s had a longer-term disc injury and has needed some management over time. He played games towards the end of last season and did really well. And we just managed his pre-season again. He’s now resuming skills as of Sunday with the group and will progress over the next week and then we’ll determine when he’s able to play.”

Daniel Rioli

“Daniel looks great. Daniel’s had a good couple of weeks of running. He’s now not just jogging, he’s actually running and doing strides. Given the time he’s had out, we’re still going to be very careful with the time-frame and how much conditioning he needs before we can resume football, but the great thing is he looks balanced, his gait is looking really good, and we’ll just keep progressing that . . . progressing his speed, and get some real pre-season conditioning into him before we progress into skills.”

Nathan Drummond

“It’s been a long preparation for him coming off his ACL. He’s been training with the main group now for around four weeks, doing full contact drills, changing direction, running flat out, and our plan for him is to return the week of AFL Round 2, obviously probably through the VFL. So that’s only a week and a half away, which is fantastic news."

yeah, it's called the reserves mate. but we don't have a vfl 2's team.

i am reliably informed hampson hasn't been watching the footy as he kicks it of late. it is important to remember that 'big blokes' take longer to develop

"In others news..mate saw one D.Rioli running pretty solidly around PRO at training this morning.👍🏻🙂"

Glen @GlenCrawforth

"Can confirm that. Along with Prestia. Looks like he’ll miss Rd1 but both looked really fit. Bachar will definitely play. I think Garthwaite will get a good run this year."

Early prognosis

Dion Prestia is almost certain to miss Thursday night's season opener. The premiership midfielder warmed up with the main group and took part in kicking drills on Tuesday before stepping away and completing his own short run-throughs. Bachar Houli stayed with the main training group and will undergo a late fitness test to determine his availability. Daniel Rioli will miss the early rounds as the Tigers get conditioning into the valuable small forward, while Nathan Drummond is expected to return through the VFL in round two after completing his rehab from a second knee reconstruction. Nathan Broad has been impressive on the track but isn't available for selection until round four. - Nathan Schmook

The Injury Ladder

The Tigers now have just one player, Daniel Rioli, on their injury list – and you can see the Blues have been badly hit when it comes to options at selection.

The Tigers have lost just nine games to injury across their list. Rioli accounts for four of them, Dion Prestia three, Nick Vlastuin one and Bachar Houli the other.

By our best 22 or by anyone on our list?
It's worded badly. Says 'games lost' lol
That sounds like a game of footy lost to me  :snidegrin
The stats are misleading because a lot of those injured players from other clubs probably wouldn't even get a game anyway.

Feeling ever the more like he won't be playing until deep into the second half of the season. At which point, is it right to bring someone that far off the pace back into the team?

The answer is yes, because he's a jet, but still.

Hurry up and get healthy Dan!!!!

I reckon thats wrong re Ben Miller, he was heavily concussed on Saturday night, not hamstring

You're right, taz  :cheers.

-----------------------------------------------------

Cotchin banged his knee into the goalpost in the dying stages of their win over Collingwood and struggled to train during the week.

Fluid from the injury then leaked into his leg and irritated his calf and ankle.

But, he is expected to train this week and face the Kangaroos at Etihad Stadium.

Shaun Grigg appears likely to miss another week with the hamstring soreness he picked up against the Magpies.

Grigg was sore after that game and then aggravated the injury at training in the lead up to the Dockers' clash.

While he hasn't sustained an actual tear, he won't be pushed this week and will likely miss a second game.

Luckless midfielder Nathan Drummond looks set to miss multiple weeks with the genuine hamstring strain he suffered in the VFL on Saturday night.

Drummond was playing in his fifth game since his second knee reconstruction in April last year.

Tall draftee Ben Miller will be tested this week after being concussed in the one-point loss to Footscray.

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's injury update:

Trent Cotchin

“Trent’s a probable for this week. Out of the Collingwood game (Round 6), he hurt his knee . . . He actually improved quite quickly during the week. He fully trained the main session last week, but then the next day he had a bit of a sore calf. The fluid from the knee had leaked down into the calf. So we just made the call, look, let’s wrap him up this week and give him a weekend off. Hopefully he resumes training this week, and we’ll see how he goes.”

Shaun Grigg

“Just at the end of the Collingwood game, ‘Grigga’ cramped up in his hamstring and he was generally sore through the week. Then, by the time we got to the main session, he did notice that he was more specifically sore in his lower hamstring and he just felt it in that session, albeit very minimal. We just took the safe option and gave him a break . . . Whether he comes into the side this week or not, I’m not too sure. We’ll assess him later in the week.”

Oleg Markov

“Oleg, the week before (in the VFL v Werribee), had a sore ‘quad’ during the game and it gradually got sorer. He had a very minor quad strain. So that’s really a one-week injury . . . We’ll have a look at him later in the week as well. Whether he plays this weekend or not, I’m not too sure. At this stage he’s 50-50.”

Nathan Drummond

“‘Drummo’ got a hamstring strain the other night during the Bulldogs (VFL) game, which was pretty disappointing. He’s had a good run since his ACL surgery in the pre-season. He’ll probably miss the next two to three weeks.”

Ben Miller

“Ben Miller got a very low-grade concussion during the game (VFL v Footscray). He was feeling fine. We’ll have to do his test later in the week, but we expect him to play this weekend.”

From reading the article on afl website today http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-05-28/double-blow-for-tigers-running-brigade"it appears Houli and Prestia will be out until after bye. George is only 50/50 to return against Bombers and Miles will go straight into the VFL team if he returns from injury. Jack and Grimes also no certainties to return against the Bombers according to the article.

Round 11 injury update

Physical Performance Manager, Peter Burge provides an update on Jack Riewoldt, Bachar Houli, Dylan Grimes, Anthony Miles, Shai Bolton, Jason Castagna, Dion Prestia and Daniel Rioli.

Jack Riewoldt, concussion

“Jack’s concussion occurred very early in the game, obviously. He actually felt pretty good at half-time, but the ‘doc’ ruled him out of the game with the concussion protocols these days . . . He’s feeling good today, and he’s a probable for this week. He’ll train tomorrow, train Thursday, and really he’s just got to tick a few little boxes with the doc in terms of concussion testing, which we expect will go well . . . But we’ll know more on Thursday.”

Bachar Houli, groin strain

“Bachar felt a little bit of a pop in his groin after a long kick to Dan Butler (v St Kilda last Saturday). We tried some things to get him back out there, but he wasn’t right. So, it’s probably going to be a medium-term injury . . . It’s disappointing, but we’ll start his ‘rehab’ phase this week and get him up and running and fit for post-bye.”

Dylan Grimes, back soreness

“’Grimesy’ actually trained in our main session last week. He copped a whack in his back a few weeks ago, I think it was against Brisbane. It was bruised, but he played with it for a couple of weeks. It had improved, but he copped another knock against West Coast (Round 9) . . . It was okay last week, probably wasn’t 100 percent, so we just took the approach to play it a bit safe and give him a break . . . He’ll hopefully be back this week, providing he gets through full training.”

Anthony Miles, back soreness

“’Milesy’ is very similar (to Grimes). He’s had some back soreness for a couple of weeks now. He’s been playing great footy through the VFL and getting heavily tagged at times. He just was a little bit sore during training (last week), so, again, we just took a safe approach with him. We want to get him up and about for this week . . .”

Shai Bolton, corked quad

“Shai got a ‘corky’ against Sandringham at Holm Park last week, on top of a corky the week before, which was quite sore. He got up to training the week leading into the Sandringham game and got another whack on it in the second quarter. So we just decided to give him a week off, get it settled, get a full week of training this week and hopefully play on the weekend.”

Jason Castagna, knee soreness

“Jase has knee injury, which is fairly minor. He hyperextended his knee against North Melbourne (Round 8), but got himself up to play against West Coast and was quite good. He just pulled up a little bit sore from the West Coast game, so we decided that we needed to give him a week off and make sure we get this right for the rest of the season. He hasn’t run yet, but he’s due to run tomorrow (Tuesday). So we anticipate that he’ll run tomorrow and, potentially, train Thursday. So right now he’s 50-50, but we’ll just see how that pans out.”

Dion Prestia, calf complaint

“Dion’s injury, initially, we thought was sort of more on the minor end and it would only be a week or so. It took a little bit longer to settle down, as to where we thought it would. He started running a week and a half ago and did a good week of conditioning last week. He’s just at that point now where we can’t quite progress back into skills. We’re in a bit of a holding pattern with him. We want to make sure we get it right, so we’ll get a little bit of a short preparation in, and then we’ll resume skills, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. But it’s probably more a medium-term injury than a short-term injury now. We’ve had to revise our time-line a bit, but given Dion’s pre-season, and some of the interruptions he’s had, we want to make absolutely sure he’s right for the second half of the year. So we are being cautious . . .”

Jason Castagna is a chance to feature against Port Adelaide on Friday if he can overcome his knee issue. Dion Prestia (calf) and Bachar Houli (groin) will likely return after the round 14 bye. Mabior Chol will be out for two months after breaking his footy at training.

Ch 7 said Dusty told them he's right but "inside sources" told Mark Stevens he's no certainty to play and it's a case of wait and see. Dusty will need to pass a fitness test later this week.

Houli's left hand is all bandaged up after surgery on a nagging finger injury. He decided to get it done now as he won't be back until after our bye due to that groin injury of his.

Astbury in doubt. Line ball to play.

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's update on the injury status of several members of the Tigers’ playing group.

Dustin Martin, calf soreness

“Dustin’s great. He had a good running session yesterday and he’s symptom free . . . He just needed an extra day or two from the soreness of last week. Unfortunately, with the six-day break, we just got caught a tiny bit short. So he’ll be fine for this week. We expect him to train all week and play.”

David Astbury, sprained ankle

“He’s tracking really well. Obviously, during the game, he came off the ground and was pretty sore . . . his ankle had blown up like a balloon. The medical guys worked some magic at half-time and he was able to get back out there and finish the game. He’s still pretty sore and bruised, but he’s functioning quite well. So we think he’s more probable than doubtful . . . It’s looking fairly optimistic that he’ll be able to train later in the week. We’ll see how that goes . . .”

Bachar Houli, groin injury

“He’s started running, which is great. He’s probably still a couple of weeks away. I would think he’s more doubtful for the Swans game after the bye (Round 15), but beyond that he’s some chance. He also had minor finger surgery last week. It was just a very minor thing that he was battling for the last couple of weeks, so it was a chance to get that sorted out. The great thing is he’s running, he’s slowly starting to condition again, and once his groin symptoms are completely gone, then we can accelerate his progression quickly.”

Dion Prestia, calf injury

“Dion’s at a point now where he hasn’t had any symptoms for nearly two weeks. He’s getting a really good conditioning base into him and doing a little bit of footy. It’s like a mini pre-season and it’s going really well. We want to set him up for a strong second half of the season.

Oleg Markov, knee injury

“Oleg has done an MCL, a medial collateral ligament injury in his knee. It’s probably going to be a four-to-six-week injury. We know with Oleg, though, he’s super positive and he is a good healer, generally. So, hopefully, it’s the shorter end of that term than the later. It’s disappointing because he was just starting to play some good footy. But seeing him today, he’s really positive. He’s always got a smile on his face, and generally his recovery time’s a little bit quicker than most people’s.”

Daniel Rioli, foot

“He’s absolutely fine. He just got stood on (during the last quarter of last Sunday’s VFL game v Williamstown). It was over the scar on his foot. But he was doing his conditioning after the game that we’ve carefully planned. He’s played four games now, albeit some of them were shortened games. He’s played some really good minutes in the last couple of weeks. It’s been a good preparation from Daniel. He’s really embraced the long-term approach and he’s in a position now where, hopefully, he can step up to the next level . . .”

Mabior Chol, broken foot

“It was the last drill in a training session two weeks ago . . . it was the last minute. He took a mark and then landed on the ground, twisted and felt something in the outside of his foot, his fifth metatarsal. He had a little fracture in there. It’s pretty painful, so he’s now in a boot and it’s going to be a medium to longer term injury, somewhere between eight to 10 (weeks), maybe even more. It’s hard to tell at this stage. He’s in a boot for three weeks and then he can start to weight bear. It will be an on-going assessment with these sorts of things. Sometimes you don’t know how long or how short it’s going to be. But at this stage it’s certainly going to be a longer term.”

Disappointing innuendo.
Not saying its not true, but rather not hear speculation like that. Just stains peoples opinions. At $60,000 per match ( not including pre season or finals ) the situation would have to be very serious for the club to pull him out, let alone risking 4 points.

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's update on the injury status of several members of the Tigers’ playing group.

Anthony Miles, concussion

“’Milesy’ suffered a concussion . . . it was a pretty nasty incident. He was really sore and a bit groggy. The doc has already ruled him out of playing this weekend. So it’s really just recovery now for MIlesy. We’re going to give him a rest this week and get him up and going, hopefully, for the week after.”

Nathan Drummond, hamstring strain

“Last Thursday night at training, ‘Drummo’ was training really well at high intensity. He had a fast effort down the middle of the ground and he felt a little bit of awareness in the hamstring. So he’s got a little strain then and it’s in the same spot as his most recent hamstring strain, which is frustrating for him. But Drummo, while he was disappointed, is positive. He’s back running already at 70 percent, so we’re hoping he misses only a couple of weeks.”

Bachar Houli, groin injury

“Bachar’s at the stage now where he’s resuming training with the group. We’re aiming for him to play against GWS next week. He’s similar to Dion Prestia in the sense that could we have pushed a little harder for this week? Maybe, but we want to make sure these guys, who haven’t had their best pre-seasons, are set up well for the rest of the year and then beyond that, obviously. So we’re going to take another week with Bachar and make sure he can do everything that he needs to do – long kicking, agility . . . everything at absolutely 100 percent by the end of this week, get a full week of training next week, and hopefully he’s available for selection for GWS.”

Oleg Markov, knee injury

“Oleg had a medial ligament sprain in his knee. He’s now running close to flat out, changing direction. Similar to Bachar, we want to make sure that his knee is absolutely stable and that he can do all of the things he needs to do at 100 percent and then get a full week of training. So whether that means next week, or the week after, I’m not too sure at this stage. We’ll know more by the end of this week.”

First dislocation doesn't require surgery. Usually 3 - 4 weeks.
Depressed fracture around the same.

I’ll happily take 3/4 weeks for all of them, all bar butler will be full running later this week so the small break will do their bodies good and freshen them up for finals. Also gives a couple of players 3-4 weeks to try and force their way into our best 22 before finals.

Great opportunity for Bolton/Stengel/Baker, Moore, Townsend and Cellis

Wouldn't mind giving Higgins a rest.  We could have the whole band in.

Out: Broad, Graham, Butler, Higgins

In: Vlastuin, Houli, Stengle, Bolton.

Would be fun watching Rioli, Stengle, Bolton and Edwards create havoc.

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge provides an update on the injury status of several members of the Tigers’ playing group.

Jack Graham, shoulder dislocation

“He had some scans over the weekend, which showed just a little bit of anterior labral damage, which is pretty typical of any dislocation. So now it’s just a short period of time of rehab. It’s that shorter-medium term range injury. He’s got to get full strength back in that shoulder to be able to tackle. The great news for Jack is that he’ll possibly be able to start running late this week, at worse early next week. So, from a fitness point of view, he certainly won’t lose anything. It’s just really getting that strength and being able to tackle again and function, and then he’ll be back in the frame for selection.”

Nathan Broad, fractured cheekbone

“He needed surgery, which was done on Saturday . . . So he’s quite sore and swollen at the moment . . . He’ll start jogging later in the week, as he feels comfortable. It’s a short-medium term injury. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later, but we need to wait for the swelling to die down and for him to feel absolutely comfortable, so that if he does cop a knock to his head, at any stage, it’s not going to reinjure and break again. That’s the main thing. From a fitness point of view, though, we’ll be able to get him going pretty quickly and also non-contact skills fairly soon as well.”

Dan Butler, ankle injury

“’Buts’, in the first quarter, went up for a marking contest and landed awkwardly and hurt his ankle. He’s going to miss a period of time now . . . He’s in a boot this week and it’s a short-medium term injury.”

Bachar Houli, groin injury

“He’s a very good chance for this week. He trained fully at the end of last week. He’s kicked off long kicking, flat-out agility, top speed, all those sort of things. It’s really now fully training this week and then we’ll make an assessment on Thursday whether we go ahead and pick him . . . But at this stage it’s looking really good.”

Ryan Garthwaite, ankle injury

“He’s sore . . . At this stage it’s questionable whether he’ll get up for this weekend . . . If there’s any doubt, we’ll probably give him the week (off).”

Ivan Soldo and Anthony Miles, concussion

“Both are feeling really good. They have to go through standard concussion testing early this week and tick off training. So really it’s a decision we’ll make on our main session on Thursday.”

Reece Conca, ankle dislocation

“It’s looking really good. He doesn’t have a boot on today . . . He’ll probably start jogging on the Alter G treadmill later this week, definitely at the latest next week . . .”

Nathan Drummond, hamstring injury

“He ran at about 90 percent last week. He’ll be running at full speed by the end of this week and then we’d probably move him to some training next week . . . He’s still probably a couple of weeks away.”

Oleg Markov, knee injury

“Oleg is going really well. He’ll start training tomorrow. Whether that means he plays this week or not, we’re not too sure at this stage . . . We’ll make a smart decision come Thursday . . .”

Mabior Chol, broken foot

“’Mabs’ is out of the boot, which is great news. He’s five weeks post his injury, so now it’s a progression of walking without the boot on and then, hopefully, jogging on the Alter G treadmill . . . It’s still a medium-term injury from this point, but it looks really good that he’ll play footy by the end of the year.”

Reece Conca - ankle
Mabior Chol – foot

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/season/injury-list

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Here is Burge’s update on the injury status of several other members of the Tigers’ playing group . . .

Shai Bolton, knee

“Shai hurt his knee actually a bit during training on Thursday, just landing from a marking contest. He pulled up quite well, but during the (VFL) game on the weekend got a little bit sore and had a bit of swelling on Sunday morning. So we’ll probably just take the week and settle that down.”

Tyson Stengle, ankle

“Tyson had an injury to his ankle early in the (VFL) game and was pulled out of the game at half-time. He’s actually pulled up quite well . . . We’re optimistic he’s going to play on the weekend.”

Bachar Houli, groin

“Bachar, since the GWS game (Round 17), has done another two weeks of training after not pulling up so well from that game . . . We want to make sure now that after every high-intensity session his groin pain is consistently good. This week, we’re looking to play him some minutes, probably through the VFL . . . What we want out of that game is for him to pull up well, and then we’ll be in a better position next week, hopefully, to progress him back to the AFL level. The main goal, though, with Bachar is to make sure he can perform at his best and pull up well from match play towards the end of the year.”

Reece Conca, ankle

“Reece is going great. He’s starting intro skills tomorrow with the group, non-contact, and we’ll progress him to full training next week. And, if that all goes well, then he would be some chance of playing game time next week.”

Jack Graham, shoulder

“Jack’s going great with his shoulder. He’s now doing some tackling work, and we’re looking to do non-contact skills as well this week and progress him into full training next week. We’ll make a decision next week whether he plays at some level next week.”

Dan Butler, ankle

“’Buts’ started running this week . . . a little bit slower than what we expected, so we’ve got to progress his running with syndesmosis ankle sprains, which can be really tricky. It’s just progressing symptom-free and once he can do straight-line running flat out, then change direction, agility . . . those things before getting back into skills. He’s probably a couple of weeks away still.”

Nathan Drummond, hamstring

“Unfortunately, during training last Thursday, he picked up a ground ball, then went to accelerate and deviate and from an opponent, and suffered another hamstring injury, same spot as he’s had the previous two times . . . We’re talking to the surgeon and possibly going to see if there’s something we can do surgically to reinforce that area.”

Mabior Chol, foot

“’Marbs’ has started running and he will progress his conditioning and hopefully into some skills. It’s probably more likely VFL finals (for his playing return).”

Oleg Markov, knee

“Oleg, during the Sandringham (VFL) game the other week, had a kick on his left (foot) and felt some pain on the outside of his knee. Previous to that he had a medial ligament injury. This time we found he had a meniscus tear and he had to have surgery last Tuesday . . . He’s probably got about a four-week rehab and he’s a chance to play again by the end of the season.”

Dion Prestia, ribs

“We’ll just give him the week and get him to a position where’s he’s more pain free and more likely next week (Round 21) against Gold Coast.”

Yellow and back: Tigers ready to load up

Sarah Black
afl.com.au
Aug 2, 2018

IT'S BLUE skies over Richmond, with the reigning premiers a game clear on top of the ladder and poised to regain a host of senior players over the next few weeks.

Dion Prestia will miss Friday night's game against Geelong with a fractured rib, but at this stage looks to be right to play Gold Coast the following week.

"He was close. Dion was obviously angling to play this week, but we just thought with the injury, there is a small chance it could progress further," coach Damien Hardwick said on Thursday.

"We'll take a conservative route with Dion and have him available next week versus Gold Coast. It was a great effort to play [out the match against Collingwood], I think he got that knock early in the second quarter, so for his courage to come through and help us win the game was really important."

Running defender Bachar Houli has played just 10 games this year, battling a groin complaint. He did not play at any level last weekend but will play a half of VFL footy on Saturday (also against Geelong).

"We're hoping to have [Houli] available for the Gold Coast game as well," Hardwick said.

"He's been training the last week and a half, so he's really turned the corner, so it's just getting some game time into his legs.

"I think he's missed eight of the last nine games, he's so important to the way we want to play, we'll hopefully get some game time into him this week and he'll put his hands up to play against Gold Coast."

Premiership hero Jack Graham is also a chance to return against the Suns, having not played since round 16 with a dislocated left shoulder.

Classy small forward Dan Butler, who also injured his left ankle in the round 16 win over Adelaide, is another week away.

"They're both progressing pretty well. Jack Graham once again trained this week, so he'll have another week training next week and hopefully be able to play.

"Dan Butler's maybe a fortnight away. He's probably been a little bit of a holding pattern at the moment, but he's starting to run around, so that's a really positive sign for us.

"We're really looking forward to welcoming him back, his speed in the forward half of the ground is so important to the way we play."

Richmond's Physical Performance Manager, Peter Burge provides an injury update:

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2018-08-13/injury-update-lambert-conca-nankervis

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Here is Burge’s update on the injury condition of several other members of Richmond’s playing list . . .

Reece Conca, rolled ankle

“Reece was down to play 70 minutes of the (VFL) game, and with four of those minutes to go, he sprained his ankle quite badly. He walked in yesterday feeling not too bad and today he’s even better. So, right now, he’s some chance of being available to play this week, but more than likely will miss just one game . . .”

Toby Nankervis, corked quad

“Toby had a quad cork from the game the week before (v Geelong). He was a little bit sore during the week and we just took the opportunity (to rest him), but he’ll be good to go this week.”

Dan Butler, ankle

“’Buts’ had an ankle syndesmosis sprain, much the same as Kane Lambert. He’d been progressing and building his speed and running about 95 percent, but still with a bit of a limp and still not full power. So last Friday he went in and had the same minor procedure that Kane had this morning, which means he’s going to miss probably the next two games. We’re preparing him for the first final at this stage . . . We’ll get a much better result with this minor surgery. We’ll start him running later this week and build his speed . . .”

Oleg Markov, knee

“Oleg has started running and is looking much better. He just need to build his conditioning base before he returns to play. Probably, best case (for his return), first week of the VFL finals, but more than likely the second week.”

Nathan Drummond, hamstring

“’Drummo’ started jogging today. We’ll progress his conditioning over the next couple of weeks and  just see where we end up with that.”

Shai Bolton, knee

“Shai had some knee soreness two weeks ago . . . We gave him some time off and then tried to build him back up again with some running. He was still sore, so he went in last Tuesday for an arthroscope, and had a minor clean-up of his meniscus. He’s back now doing some strength work and will start running, potentially at the end of this week, certainly early next week at the latest. We’re hopeful Shai will be back playing somewhere during the VFL finals . . . on the earlier end of those finals we’re thinking at this stage.”

Noah Balta, corked hamstring

“Different injury, a hamstring cork, but we do see them a lot these days. He was able to get running early last week, but just couldn’t progress to full speed later in the week. So we gave him the week off. He’ll fully train this week. Obviously there’s no VFL game this week, so he probably ends up with another week off. But he’ll fully train with the group . . .”

Mabior Chol, broken foot

“’Marbs’ is conditioning still. We’re building his base and we’re looking to bring him back during the VFL finals.”

Wonder why they didn't do the surgery on Butler early. Not ideal Lambert and Butler coming into final not match fit.If Butler doesn't play a half in vfl very hard.

Wonder why they didn't do the surgery on Butler early. Not ideal Lambert and Butler coming into final not match fit.If Butler doesn't play a half in vfl very hard.
Sometimes you need to let injuries sit for a while before you make a decision. If Butler is getting surgery, it’ll likely be a small pin being inserted to help structure the injury etc.

Townsend out for the finals with a fractured ankle. :-[

The rest are progressing well, with Lambert a near certainty to play against Hawthorn, Butler to play "some minutes" in the VFL on Saturday.

Disappointing about Townsend; I still believe he could have been a dangerous inclusion commeth the moment.

Butler certainly won’t play v Hawthorn if he plays VFL; 5 day break.

He wont play a full game, game time will be monitored and if he gets through will be a huge chance

Just couldnt have seen Dimma bringing in Townsend anyway, with Graham tried up forward i think he fills a part role of having some stronger bodies inside 50.

Broken leg rules premiership Tiger out of finals

RICHMOND flag hero Jacob Townsend won't be part of the Tigers' premiership defence after he undergoes surgery on a fractured fibula on Monday.

The 25-year-old injured his left ankle in a tackle during the first quarter of the Tigers' VFL win over Frankston on Saturday and failed to the return to the field.

It's since been determined an operation and recovery period of at least two months is required.

"He suffered a fractured fibula from the game, which means he needs surgery … that's his season over, unfortunately," Richmond's physical performance manager Peter Burge told the club's website.

"It's really disappointing, it's probably an eight-to-10-week situation from the surgery, so really now it's just about getting himself right for pre-season."

The Tigers were long odds to become the first side ever to reform their winning 2017 premiership team this season, given the emergence of defender Jayden Short, the promise of youngster Jack Higgins and the return of Reece Conca.

But with Townsend now ruled out, they have no chance of getting their flag-winning 22 back together before the end of their season.

Townsend has been in and out of the AFL side this season after his fairytale run to last year's finals where he came into the side in round 22 and held his spot to win a premiership medal.

He last played at AFL level in round 20 against Geelong this season.

Meanwhile, Dan Butler will play limited minutes in the Tigers' VFL qualifying final against Williamstown on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old hasn't played since injuring his ankle in round 16 against Adelaide and underwent surgery to strengthen the joint on August 10.

He is expected to train fully with the VFL squad this week while the AFL players have a few days off.

"It won't be a full game, but it's great news. He's moving really well and that minor surgery he had two weeks ago has really helped him progress so we're really pleased," Burge said.

Another premiership player in Kane Lambert is also on the comeback trail from an ankle injury that required the same surgical intervention as Butler's on August 13.

However, given he last played in round 21, it's unlikely he'll play in the VFL this week and will instead be considered to come straight into the Tigers' side to face Hawthorn on September 6.

"He's running really well at the moment, running with good balance, good gait, and he'll resume training on the weekend with the group," he said.

"We think he's a really good chance to play next week [against Hawthorn]."

Oleg Markov is a chance to return from a knee injury in the VFL final this week if he gets through training while Mabior Chol (foot) and Nathan Drummond (hamstring) are looking at a later return in September.

Shai Bolton is in a similar boat, having ramped up his running on the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill after a knee injury.
