At the start of 2017 I had no expectations for making the 8 yet alone winning the Premiership flag.
So in the vacuum of winning the GF and salivating over annihilating Carlton on 22 March 2018 there is a lot of thumb twiddling.
In our esteemed OER supporters opinion was there one or several factors we can attribute to our success.

Everything and everyone, the stars aligned it was an insane connection

In a word, Neil Balme (well ok, two words)! He's just such a great judge of football talent, whether its in recruiting, player development or running the Football Department. I was red-hot jealous of Geelong for getting him, & then Collingwood too, when I heard he was coming home at long last I just knew things were going to happen. He just generates success like no other person in the AFL. Everything he touches turns to gold & King Midas has just proven it again!

The changes to the off field staff plus Hardwick relaxing his control on the game plan gave the players the reason to put their full energy into playing the game. It took a while but by the end of the year, and especially in the finals series, not one player in the club had any doubt on the game plan, in their teammates and in themselves.
It was beautiful to watch.
Fully confident the players will play all of 2018 at a higher level throughout the home and away

Collingwood demoting Balme which resulted in him coming over to us.
Balme recruiting Caracalla along with his game plan and Lepitch with is smaller forward line idea.
Hardwick changing his coaching philosophy and focusing on his strengths.(best man manager in the business)

What was the major factor?
The crows were poo on the day.
We played, they didn't.

Seriously though, it was the complete change of attitude, gameplan and personnel (assistant coaches & adding younger and quicker players in the team). I remember saying on here after the 2016 season had finished that we would finish bottom 4 in 2017 and Dimma would be gone unless he totally changed the gameplan. I was doubtful he (or any coach) could do it after 7 years in charge as long-term coaches are usually stuck in their ways. But, to Dimma's credit, he not only changed it but he also changed himself and they way he coached to connect with the players as a team and they repaid him (and us) with our long awaited 11th flag :clapping.
