Title: 2018 National Draft thread
Post by: one-eyed on January 24, 2018, 01:48:30 AM
RECRUITERS who have travelled to America to follow the NAB AFL Academy's high-performance camp say they have gained a valuable insight into what shapes as an exciting 2018 draft pool.

Leading scouts Derek Hine (Collingwood) and Stephen Conole (Brisbane Lions) were among nine recruiters on the 10-day trip, which has seen 29 prospects train in Florida and Los Angeles.

Fremantle, Geelong, Gold Coast, Greater Western Sydney, North Melbourne, Essendon and Richmond also sent recruiters to observe and study the players, who stayed at the IMG Academy in Bradenton before having several sessions at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Superdraft or superhyped? Early view on 2018

Callum Twomey in Los Angeles
afl.com.au
Jan 24, 2018

The NAB AFL Draft is a long way off, but here are some early thoughts on the shape of the 2018 crop.

How does the group stack up?

Some recruiters last year suggested the 2018 pool will be the next 'Superdraft', but that seems a little premature at this stage. The grass is always greener in recruiting, the next draft always gets more hype than the current one.

Nevertheless, the Academy squad was impressive in its standard of training, and scouts in the US have left enthused about the talent available to clubs. The evenness of the group was evident in the 2km time trial results, with the winner running 6:07 minutes and the last coming in at 7:14 in a very solid set of numbers.

Talk on the 2018 crop has focused on the talls available, particularly Jack Lukosius and Max and Ben King. But the range of sizes and shapes for the top bunch is also appealing. Izak Rankine looks ready to play AFL now such are the half-forward/midfielder's skills and zip, Ian Hill is exciting and adds genuine speed, while Connor Rozee's versatility will appeal.

Sam Walsh is the standout midfielder, but others have also shown talent, including Curtis Taylor, whose kicking and smarts will be worth watching this season. Tarryn Thomas is all silk and a great size at 187cm, Bailey Smith works extremely hard, Jye Caldwell will dig in and find the footy and Chayce Jones has recovered from a serious ankle injury last year and is a trusty type.

It is difficult to compare this one draft to another but looking at last year's group against this one, there appear to be more talls near the top end in 2018 whereas midfielders dominated the early picks last season.

Who are the early contenders for the No.1 pick?

Lukosius' brilliant SANFL debut last year – when he booted four goals in a preliminary final – stamped him as one of the early favourites for the No.1 choice. He has a relaxed nature, but runs smartly in games and is a superb kick, both for goal and around the ground. Recruiters with early picks will be watching him closely all year.

Rankine and Hill are among the most talented, but are smaller-forward types who generally don't get taken with the No.1 pick. Nevertheless, they're among the top tier given their pace and skills and whenever the intensity stood up at training in match drills, Rankine and Hill were at the forefront.

The King brothers will dominate discussion and should be in this conversation as well, while Walsh, perhaps the most complete midfielder in the pool, will also be heavily spoken about as a possible No.1 pick.

He is a captain-in-waiting who starred last year for the Geelong Falcons on their way to the TAC Cup premiership and has most bases covered: he's tough, quick, wins it himself, kicks it well and has footy smarts. He looks a player who won't let you down.

Where will the players come from?

South Australia has gone two years without a top-10 pick, but it's hard to see right now how Lukosius and Rankine won't be in there come November this year. Rozee also did some exciting things as a bottom-ager last season, and they are three of six SA players in the Academy.

The Victorian contingent was again strong, with both Country and Metro having eight players in the group. Among them, Riley Bowman's tall frame but agile movement caught the eye at times during the tour, while midfielder Ned McHenry's bubbly and energetic personality matches his go-go-go style on the field.

There is genuine quality in the division two states, too. Nick Blakey (NSW-ACT) may be the best of the lot and will run out for the Allies alongside Bailey Scott (Queensland), while Jones and Thomas should turn around Tasmania's recent draft fortunes. From the Northern Territory, Matt Green is raw but was exciting at stages on tour with his movement for a taller type.

Damian Barrett just said 7 Victorian clubs are chasing Oscar Bradtke, son of former Aussie basketballer Mark Bradtke. He apparently has now chosen footy ahead of basketball despite being offered scholarships to US colleges.

As he hasn't played in a registered footy comp. for the past 3 years, he can go to the AFL club of his choice as a category B rookie. He is also 205cm tall. That's why 7 Victorian clubs are interested.

Callum Twomey's first mock draft of the year. He has Tom McKenzie going to us at pick 18.

1: Jack Lukosius (Carlton)

“He’s starred so far for the South Australian side at the Under 18 Championships, he’s a key forward who just marks it beautifully in the air.

“He’s one of the great kicks I’ve seen come through the draft and has a presence about him.”

2: Sam Walsh (Brisbane)

“Sam Walsh at the Lions would be a great fit. He’s a Lions supporter and a midfielder who just finds the footy.

“He’s probably more of an outside midfielder at the moment.”

3: Max King (St Kilda)

“Then there’s Max King at pick three, he grabs it well for a key position player.”

"He is currently recovering from a torn ACL.

4: Ben King (Gold Coast)

“The twin brother of Max, a key defender."

5: Tarryn Thomas (North Melbourne) (academy)

“This is taking into account where the bids might come. Tarryn’s a star and come through the academy at North and looks like being a really top prospect.”

6: Izak Rankine (Western Bulldogs)

“He’s got the star factor about him, been really good at the championships so far.”

7: Bailey Smith (Essendon)

“He’s a gun midfielder, that’s what the Bombers need, he can come in and play straight away.

“Smith’s been basically the in-form player of the championships so far.”

8: Nick Blakey (Sydney) (academy)

“Matching a bid from the Dockers for the father-son academy prospect.”

9: Bailey Williams (Fremantle)

“The Dockers need a tall forward, Williams can play in the ruck too.”

10: Connor Rozee (Adelaide)

“A local boy for the Crows with a tonne of talent.”

11: Jackson Hately (GWS)

12: Ian Hill (Hawthorn)

13: Isaac Quaynor (Collingwood)

14: Jye Caldwell (Port Adelaide)

15: Riley Collier-Dawkins (Geelong)

16: Curtis Taylor (Adelaide)

17: Chayce Jones (Gold Coast)

18: Tom McKenzie (Richmond)

“We can talk about super drafts in terms of the players early,” Kevin Sheehan told SEN's KB and the Doc.

“I reckon the 20 will be as good as any 20 – put it that way.

“Has it got the depth? We don’t know that yet.”

Another smokey to look out for is Tyron Smallwood from WA.

Currently a colts player with Claremont, 179 cms, 77kgs, very quick and is Robert Wiley like in front of goals. If he is anything like his father he'll also be as hard as a cats head.

Has missed a fair chunk of the season with the Colts with a broken jaw, which is to our advantage as he may miss the u18 champs because of it.

Highly rated by the WA u18 coaches.

Very small looking player, but if he has the tank and speed, ... gee Bolton cant get a game for us and he was touted as a pretty special player. Look at the muscle on castagna, higgins, butler. Did they start that way?
Time will tell with Izak. Love the name.

Butters going in for a shoulder reconstruction will help. Not overly impressed with what I've seen. Plenty better.
With live trading of draft picks looming, I'm dreaming of Rankine. Their will be none better. As for small, not sure who people have been watching but the guy is a bit of a bull. Explosive, takes pack parks, kicks them from everywhere, elusive. The list goes on. I'm calling it early. Best in the draft by a street.
Couple of SA boys look very good.

SA does look to have a bumper crop of premium talent this year.

I know more about the WA boys. There are a couple in the group who could be real smokeys. A number of their best players have had interrupted prep for the Champs, so we might see a few slide a bit, although I think most recruiters would be all over it.

Our second pick is 36. Butters will be gone by then I'd have thought.

I get the Rankine love. Unless he slides though, hard to see how we could snare a high enough pick to get him. Smart clubs will be looking at the model for success we have built, 4-5 premium talent players with role players around them, and will be looking to use their picks on guys like Rankine, who is undoubtedly premium talent.

Assuming we can't get Rankine, but are looking at that type of player, Smallwood from WA could be the go. Broke his jaw playing for Claremont Colts 6 weeks ago, only just recovered in time for the Champs. Still made the team despite being underdone for match fitness, and is a very similar style of player to Rankine (thought not in that class at the moment).

Callum Twomey says this year's draft isn't a "super draft".

----------------------------------------------------------

Future Stars co-host Callum Twomey has highlighted the point of difference in this year’s AFL draft.

While it isn’t likely to live up to the ‘super draft’ tag that has been thrown around, AFL.com.au draft guru Twomey thinks the slew of tall talent available at the top of the board will create a new sense of excitement.

“I think the point of difference around the top group in this year’s draft is the talls available,” Twomey told SEN’s Whateley.

“Jack Lukosius is there, Ben King has come on as a forward this year in the absence of his brother Max, who has gone down with an ACL injury.

“I think the fact there are three big talls right at the top of board makes it a little bit different and a little bit more exciting.

“I don’t think it’s a really, really, really special standout top 10.

“I wouldn’t say this draft has lived up to some of the hype it got for the last 12 months.

“It’s been talked about as a super draft, I don’t think it is that.

“I think most clubs are in opposition to the view that it is a super draft.”

Tyrone Smallwood made his debut for Claremont yesterday in the WAFL. Kicked a goal from a good pack mark too.

I hope we are looking at this kid.

For me, he looms as a replacement for Bolton and I think he will be available with our second round pick.

Liam Stocker's push up the draft order has had another boost after the Sandringham Dragon won this year's Morrish Medal as the best player in the TAC Cup.

Stocker missed the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with a broken jaw but his form throughout the season saw him named the best and fairest of Victoria's under-18 competition.

The midfielder collected 19 votes to beat Western Jets midfielder Connor Thar (16 votes) and Atu Bosenavulagi (Oakleigh), Campbell Hustwaite (Dandenong) and Sam Walsh (Geelong) who all polled 14 votes.

He averaged 23 disposals and five tackles a game in his 12 TAC Cup appearances this season, and had four three-vote games.

Stocker is an inside midfielder with an appetite for winning possessions himself and getting it out, and he could force his way into the top-20 selections on NAB AFL Draft night after his strong finish to the season.

He was also named in the TAC Cup team of the year, on the forward flank, and follows Jack Higgins (Richmond), Hugh McCluggage (Brisbane) and Clayton Oliver (Melbourne) as recent winners of the Morrish Medal.

Looks a good young player from the highlights. From my perspective when we are at the top of the ladder we need to bring
in one or two good kids a year to keep us up there down the track. Clark looks a good option.

THE 2018 Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal was won by Josh Corbett on Monday night, putting the talented Werribee forward in an ideal position to realise his AFL dream.

The past 12 winners of the prestigious VFL award, handed to the League's best player under the age of 24, have ultimately been picked up by AFL clubs somewhere down the track.

Seven of those 12 players were still on AFL lists in 2018, making valuable contributions at senior level, with clubs routinely using the award to pluck hidden gems from the VFL.

Lambert was a part winner (2013).

POS: Midfielder
Ht 193cm, Wt 88kg, DOB 3/2/00
From Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro
August ranking: 17

He might not be a big ball-winner at this stage of his development, but Collier-Dawkins can impact games through the midfield without dominating them. The big-bodied inside ball-winner was excellent, particularly early, in the Chargers' finals win over the Western Jets last week. He finished with 20 disposals and had three clearances, and is most comfortable using it by hand at this stage. Has upside.

It seems Valente will be around our pick or even slip down the draft order for the similar reasons Graham did. Question marks on his pace although his state coach says it isn't an issue. Valente is also injured (bone bruising on his knee) so he won't be at the AFL Combine front and centre in front of club recruiters.

The interesting one this year out of the mature state league players will be Mitch Grigg. Failed in his first go at AFL with the Crows (2013-16) but has won back-to-back Magarey medals playing for Norwood in the SANFL and today had 31 disposals and kicked 6 goals in a losing Grand Final team.
Title: Re: 2018 National Draft thread
Post by: Gracie on September 24, 2018, 10:13:55 AM
Liked Grigg in his draft year but didn't set the world on fire at Adelaide only playing 20 games over 3 seasons.

Actually started getting some decent numbers in the later part of 2016 but then was delisted.

Potentially worth a shot as at worse he becomes midfield depth especially if we lose Miles Lloyd C Ellis and Conca this year.

Only thing not sure how to classify him as a midfielder. Didn't seem to win a high % of contested ball.

Surely there is a few inside ball winning midfielders across the state leagues. Not sure Grigg is the answer.

Combine results likely to see him available at our first pick. Not a super athlete but a natural footballer who just knows how to play the game. Think Graham or Higgins.

Was watching some WAFL U15 squad games this week, and Ian Hill's name came up in conversation.

A chap from East Fremantle was saying that apart from Hill's skills, he has never seen a player for his age with better body contact technique. He sticks tackles and makes them hurt, which is impressive for a lightly framed player. Good tackling technique, and a very good front on tackler which is not something you see a lot of in the AFL. How this translates to AFL is anyone's guess, but if he bulks up a bit he sounds like a ripper.

Live pick trading a draft boon

richmondfc.com.au
October 6, 2018

Richmond Recruiting Officer Luke Williams has outlined how the introduction of live trading of picks at this year’s AFL national draft will benefit the Tigers and other league clubs.

“It’s pretty exciting for the industry,” Williams told ‘Roar Vision’ at the completion of the annual four-day AFL draft combine.

“It gives us a bit of flexibility . . . Prior to this year, we’ve known which picks we’ve got, and in some cases you’re hopeful that a particular player will get to your pick.

“But this sort of flexibility gives us a chance to really hone in on some players that are a big focus for us and potentially work with some other clubs to push up the order or back down . . . whatever it might be.

“It gives us a better chance of landing the player that we are really after.”

The 2018 AFL national draft will be held over two days for the first time – on Thursday, November 22 and Friday, November 23 – at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

Live pick trading will enable clubs to exchange picks to move up or down the order while the draft is in progress.

Future picks from the following year can also be swapped, however, once a player is drafted, he can’t be on-traded to another club.

Williams highlighted the overall value of the draft combine for AFL recruiters, who this year were able to watch a total of 85 draft hopefuls compete in a variety of physical tests and had the opportunity to interview them.

“Nothing beats watching the players play football . . . ultimately this experience at the combine just confirms and complements the information that we’ve already gathered. So it ends up being quite crucial to our end decision-making,” Williams said.

“Coming into what is going to be our first experience of live trading, the more information we can gather, the better.

“So this year’s combine, in particular, has been really crucial for that.”

Very agile for his size though. Something like 8.3 seconds for the agility test which was about 5th best IIRC.

Check out his combine results. Absolute elite in many categories, especially 20m sprint and agility.
Also wad made Captain of Vic Metro so surprised you say he doesn't fly the flag!

Not sold on Shane Nelson (assume the West Perth version). Have seen him live a fair bit. He gets a lot of the footy but at WAFL level you really need to tear teams up when you do that, and he doesn't. He is good, but I am not sure he can step up to the next level, which given my track record of evaluating WAFL propsects suggests he wil become an gun at AFL level.

Callum Twomey has Ian Hill at 17.

That would be a steal. In any other drafy he'd be top 10 easily.

My ideal:

Pick 17 - best available - Ian Hill (gives us skill, pace and beautiful delivery into the forward 50 and tackles!)

Pick 35 - best big mid available - Ely Smith (hope he slides to this pick)

Pick ? (trade pick from Stengle or Lloyd) - Riley Grundy

Pick 71 - Best ruck available at this pick

Not sure how we see ourselves off for tall forward players but if we are looking for one Oliver Eastland might be a go.

At 196cm might be an inbetweener, but plays ruck for Claremont (and holds his own against much more mature players), and moves really well. Looks a promising type forward as well.

Tigers have spoken to Jordan Clark

Looks a good young player from the highlights. From my perspective when we are at the top of the ladder we need to bring
in one or two good kids a year to keep us up there down the track. Clark looks a good option.

Any chance we will get this young man. He looks a good prospect and with Houli probably retiring next year we need a half back
who can direct play and get us moving. I hope we take Clark if we get the chance.

Way tooooooo slow...makes Miles look like Bolt :shh

He'd likely just be inside depth with a late/rookie pick not first 22 on the wing...not as one dimensional as Miles either, bigger, taller, can take marks , play forward and kick goals....like the 6 he kicked in the SANFL GF on top of his 31 touches...back to back McGoo Medalist, Jack Oakley Medal (SANFL Norm Smith) and goal of the year for good measure.... at the very worst a better,  more versatile version of Matt Thomas... :shh

* We value this year's draft and want to keep our picks and add more.

* We'll draft some cheap mature age players 22+ y.o. looking for another Lambert.

* We'll draft 7 to 8 mids some of which will be mature picks.

Mids are obviouslly a priority as they should be this year  but we shouldn't be totally ignoting KPP's....apart from the lack of ruck depth we basically have no gernuine, pure KPF's outside of Riewoldt & Lynch....they're either utilities like Moore & Balta (who are both strongest down back & weakest up forward IMO though that *might* change with Balta) ,potential swingmen who are currently defenders like Garthwite (CHF as a junior) & Miller or ruck/forward types like CCJ & Chol(and we don't even know if Chol will still be here and he looks better in defence IMO anyway...)..and Soldo who's just an old-style Diplodocus ruckman a bd a very ordinary one at that.....also take into account that the footy law  of averages suggests it's a hihly unlikely that all them will even make the grade and I reckon we still need at least one more at each end - and of course another ruck.... :shh

Average height here which these days in footy is a small forward/mid  :P. As my only decent footy skill was kicking straight I'd have to stick to the goalsquare Richard Lounder style ;D.

My thoughts exactly. I want a big mid who could be the next Cripps. Battering ram style. Someone 188-193cm with some size and tank.

Really wish we had tried to trade into the 2nd round, maybe by trading out someone who could have currency like B Ellis, to try to get into that 25-30 range.

GCS have picks 24 + 29. I wonder if they would have shown any interest in guys like B Ellis

So if the “best available” at pick 17 was a small forward you you take him?... I wouldn’t think so.

When you finish the home and away season on 18 wins you can afford to draft for needs more so than best available.

Shame you can't trade new draftees then...

We could take the 'best available' player at 17, then maybe on-trade to Brisbane for Connor McFayden with something coming back our way for example...

I'd trade next year's frst and all our picks from 37-72 for GWS' picks 19, 25 & 55 - first round quality goes to 25-30 deep this year and that would gve us three picks inside the top 25...my only reservation would be that we'll probably need that first rounder next year to get one of Hopper, Cerra or SPP and we'll probably need to save our 2020 picks for MJ so we can't really use them next year either...alternatively we could trade 17 ,37 and maybe a late pick for  19 & 25 or even try and trade 37-72  for GC's picks 24 & 29 (they already have picks 2, 3 & 6 and will probably either need points or might want to draft some mature agers instead of all kids)...or even 17 & 37 and a late pick swap for WC's 20 & 22....the key is getting more picks inside the top 30 or better yet tiop 25.... :shh

Adelaide and Port have multiple first round picks. Adelaide with 8, 13 ,16, and 21 and Port with 5, 10 and 15. And are reportedly looking to move up the draft top secure the top SA kids.

Suns could trade one or both of 2 and 3.

They could end up with 6, 8, 10, 15, 16 in a strong draft. This would then open up 24 and 29 for trades for lower picks to pick up the mature age players as you suggest above

Phantom draft from the Roar website has Stocker going to us at our first pick (#17 -> #20 after F/S & NGA bids).

Pick 1 – Carlton Blues – Sam Walsh
Pick 2 – Gold Coast Suns – Jack Lukosius
Pick 3 – Gold Coast Suns – Izak Rankine
Pick 4 – St Kilda Saints – Connor Rozee
Pick 5 – Port Adelaide Power – Max King
Pick 6 – Gold Coast Suns – Bailey Smith
Pick 7 – Western Bulldogs – Ben King
Pick 8 – Adelaide Crows – Jackson Hately
Pick 9 – GWS Giants – Jordan Clark
Pick 10 – Sydney Swans – Nick Blakey (matching bid from Port Adelaide)
Pick 11 – Port Adelaide – Zak Butters
Pick 12 – GWS Giants – Riley Collier-Dawkins
Pick 13 – North Melbourne – Tarryn Thomas (matching bid from Geelong)
Pick 14 – Geelong – Curtis Taylor
Pick 15 – Collingwood Magpies – Isaac Quaynor (matching bid from Adelaide)
Pick 16 – Adelaide Crows – Jez McLennan
Pick 17 – Fremantle Dockers – Jye Caldwell
Pick 18 – Port Adelaide – Xavier Duursma
Pick 19 – Adelaide Crows – Sam Sturt

Pick 20 – Richmond Tigers – Liam Stocker
183cm, 83kg

Stocker won this year’s Morrish Medal as the best player of the TAC Cup. The inside midfielder is physically ready to play AFL and if the Tigers would like to get better at clearances next year, he could help with that.

Been told Gold Coast seriously considering the King boys at picks 2 and 3. Interesting move but could be the right move as they are honest and loyal young men.

RICHMOND

Pick 17: Richmond has lost depth in its midfield stocks but could bring in a prospect who appears ready to go in Liam Stocker. The tough, dig-in, hands-on midfielder won the Morrish Medal at TAC Cup level this season and he's a good kick on both feet. He has the build and frame to be playing AFL next year.

Around the mark: Riley Collier-Dawkins, Chayce Jones, Luke Valente

The raging swapping of draft picks during the recent draft period, where 56 of the 94 draft picks were traded, and the insane appetite of fans around the country, tell us the most anticipated draft in history will soon be upon us.

For the first time, selections can be traded on the night.

It means the predictable — and boring — sequence of pick, name; pick, name; which has often been accurately predicted by football media in the first 10 selections and which has been the traditional draft process, has been revitalised.

“It creates the ability for it to be unpredictable and that creates excitement, so, really, it’s the unknown,’’ the AFL’s Josh Vanderloo said.

The machinations are endless.

“I’d also look further than that and say there may be a player available that a club thought they’d never be able to access, now suddenly they can say, ‘Righto, let’s put all our chips in and move ahead in the draft to get that player’.

“In the past, they never had that opportunity. We’ve had case studies in the past where clubs have said, ‘Gee, that player slipped, we wish we could’ve taken him,’ but their next pick was 15 away. This provides more list flexibility and clubs can be more strategic to achieve the outcomes they want.

Telecast by Fox Footy, the first-round extravaganza will be held on Thursday, November 22, and the remaining rounds the next day.

For the first time, club officials won’t be on the floor, they will be in separate rooms, where they will reveal their picks or trades via computer.

Cameras will be in each of the 18 rooms, but unfortunately not with volume.

Each club has five minutes to trade a pick or select a player, and if a trade is made, the selection has to be revealed in the same five-minute window.

In the unlikely case a club can’t make a future trade under AFL rules, because it has already traded away future picks, the draft program will reject a trade.

Logistics aside, the revamped national draft has all clubs in play.

“Certainly, every club is part of this draft no matter where their current selections lie,’’ Vanderloo said.

“Clubs will be looking at all scenarios, especially over the next five weeks leading up to the draft, and if they find one which works and the player they want is available, I definitely think there will be trades. Whether it happens in the first round, second round or third, there will be trades, definitely.’’

The AFL is hoping 5000 fans attend the draft at Marvel Stadium.

Pick 17: RICHMOND TIGERS

Sporting News
31 Oct 2018

Who will they be likely to draft?

Coincidentally Richmond had pick 17 last year and managed to snap up Jack Higgins. The Tigers will be happy if they can get another bargain this far down the list.

Chayce Jones (TAS): 180cm, 74kg
A hard-working mid who has no trouble getting his hands on the ball. And they love the Tassie Tigers down at Punt Road.

Luke Valente (SA): 186cm, 80kg
A mature young midfielder with a well-rounded game that suits Richmond’s draft style.

First pick on either Collier-Dawkins, Smith, Valente, Stocker or Stack in that order - big N-O to Jones, particularly if we want immediate impact. :shh

Mitch Podhaski with a later pick would be excellent. :shh :shh

Buckenara ranks Collier-Dawkins at our pick.

17. RILEY COLLIER-DAWKINS

Midfielder, 193cm, 88kg, Oakliegh Chargers

Buckenara says: There’s a lot to like about Collier-Dawkins because even though he’s 193cm, he’s a midfielder who can go forward and take a mark and kick a goal. That’s the prototype for the current-day midfielder and I think it will see him have a lot of clubs ready to pounce in the draft.

Plays like: Nat Fyfe (Fremantle)

Without knowing much about the other potential players around our first pick, this kid is precisely what we need.
He looks to have good pace, looks good below his knees for a player of his height and looks to have a good leg on him.
Put some meat on his bones and he could be the next Patty Cripps.

Xavier Duursma moulds himself on Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin

November 3, 2018
Matt Balmer
FOX SPORTS

HE is the draft prospect who moulds himself on Richmond captain Trent Cotchin.

And there’s no surprise he is held in such high regard by not only AFL club recruiting departments, but the boys in the draft pool who have played alongside him.

Meet Xavier Duursma. The 18-year-old Vic Country prospect who looms as a potential first-round pick after a consistent season at both the TAC Cup and Under 18 Championships.

The Gippsland Power captain is one of the best leaders in the draft pool, and explained he looks up to Richmond’s 2017 premiership captain Trent Cotchin as a role model as to how best to lead a team.

“(I) probably (mould myself on) Trent Cotchin,” Duursma told foxfooty.com.au at the AFL draft combine.

“(Also) probably a bit of Isaac Smith. I think I’ve got a bit of balance of both, like my leadership and head in the whole sort of stuff, like Trent Cotchin and that’s all I can do.

“Also a bit of outside run and penetrating kicks like Isaac Smith, so I think I’ve got a bit of both which is good.”

Duursma averaged 22.8 disposals and 5.2 tackles during the TAC Cup, where he lead the Power to a Preliminary Final — their best result in over five years.

“I’ve been pretty happy with my year so far,” Duursma explained.

“Got Power to second spot on the ladder, I’m pretty happy with that. We went pretty deep into finals, so I would’ve liked to play in the Grand Final and gone all the way, but that’s footy — you’re going to get wins and losses.

“I think still it’s a pretty successful year for me and the team, I think I’ve played some good footy consistently.”

One of Duursma’s best performances for the season came on the MCG, where Vic Country and Vic Metro clashed ahead of the Collingwood and Carlton match in June.

The midfielder collected 19 disposals, seven inside 50s and five clearances as one of his team’s best players in the loss.

The 185cm prospect also has the capabilities to play across half back and reads the play well, where he can take a strong overhead mark.

“It was an amazing feeling getting out there on the ‘G. It’s a cauldron, you walk out and it’s there,” he said.

“To be able to play a good game there, it was pretty awesome. First time on the ‘G, can only hope for a few more and it was an amazing experience and great to play well there.”

Duursma has links to the AFL, after father Dean was on Melbourne’s list while Uncle Jamie also played 59 games for Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Every Test, ODI & T20I live, ad-break free during play and in 4K. Only on Foxtel. SIGN UP TODAY!

Clubs have asked Duursma how he would go away from family if they draft him, but his only major concern would be around his cooking situation.

“(Clubs) like to know how you’ll move away from home and how you think you’ll handle it. How would you cook for yourself? How would you try and clean? All that sort of stuff,” he said.

“Just how you’re going to handle the training, what example you’re going to set.”

But when prompted about his own cooking skills, Duursma said he had a lot to learn and would be hoping to move in with a player who knows their way around a kitchen.

“I’m not a good cook,” Duursma said with a laugh.

“I’ll have to practice it, try and find someone who can help me.”

Away from football, Duursma enjoys surfing and camping, where he can often be found spending many summer days in Wilsons Promontory on the east coast of Victoria.

Every AFL club could do with a leader like Duursma and there’s no surprise the talented teenager is in hot demand with less than four weeks until the draft.

Here are Foxsports's draft rankings 26-50.

So the draftees that are likely to still be available at our first two picks.

AFL Draft 2018: Power rankings, draft board, hidden gems, top prospects

Matt Balmer
FOX SPORTS
5 Nov 2018

THE clock is ticking down until the 2018 AFL national draft, which this year will be held over two days on November 22 and 23.

Some clubs have tasty first-round selections, while others have traded away their top picks, meaning they will be hunting the hidden gems in the draft pool.

Foxfooty.com.au presents its draft board with players ranked from 26 to 50, with players ranked 1 to 25 to be revealed in coming weeks.

NOTE: No mature-age prospects have been included in the rankings.

26. Luke VALENTE

Clubs: Norwood/South Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 186cm, 80kg

Bio: The inside midfielder captained South Australia in the Under 18 Championships. And after scoring an invite to the AFL draft at Marvel Stadium, he could well be drafted inside the first round. His contested ball winning ability is impressive and he won South Australia’s MVP at the carnival, averaging 22.8 disposals at 84 per cent efficiency.

27. Will KELLY

Clubs: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Key defender

Size: 193cm, 83kg

Bio: The athletic defender is the son of former Collingwood player Craig and is eligible to join the Magpies as a father-son prospect in the draft. Kelly got better with every game he played in the Under 18 Championships, performing well on the MCG against Vic Country and showed off his marking ability right throughout the year. Kelly can also play as a key forward if needed.

28. Bailey WILLIAMS

Clubs: Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country

Position: Key forward/Ruck

Size: 198cm, 95kg

Bio: The athletic tall has a wide draft range, but could even be snapped up inside the first round. At his very best, Williams is hard to stop, where he leaps high above all other opposition players. His leap helps him pull down big marks, while he often dominates the ruck thanks to his height. He was also a member of the AFL Academy. Williams is very mobile when the ball hits the ground, he is as athletic as any general forward.

29. Xavier O’HALLORAN

Clubs: Western Jets/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 187cm, 83kg

Bio: The inside midfielder is one of the best leaders in the 2018 draft pool. The Vic Metro captain showed an extra string to his bow during the Under 18 Championships, pushing forward and booting multiple goals. The 18-year-old wins the contested ball and is strong at winning the clearances.

30. Connor McFADYEN

Clubs: Brisbane Lions Academy/Allies

Position: Midfielder

Size: 190cm, 88kg

Bio: McFadyen jumped onto the scene early in the season when he booted four goals in a trial match at Ikon Park. The inside midfielder missed the draft combine through injury, but showed his skills during the Under 18 Championships and was named in the All-Australian squad. He can win the football in the contest and works hard to get the ball inside 50.

31. Toby BEDFORD

Clubs: Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country

Position: Forward/Midfielder

Size: 176cm, 65kg

Bio: The Melbourne next generation academy prospect had a fine finish to the season, which helped him rise up draft boards. Bedford possesses outstanding speed and the indigenous prospect was a strong contributor at all levels. He is far from the finish product and has plenty of improvement left in him.

32. Luke FOLEY

Clubs: Subiaco/Western Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 187cm, 75kg

Bio: The 19-year-old was completely overlooked last year by all 18 clubs, but in 2018 he seems destined to have his name called out on draft night. The tall inside midfielder has battled multiple injury setbacks throughout 2018, but has shown at all levels he is capable of becoming a strong player at AFL level. He uses it well and has a strong athletic ability. Also kicks it well off his right boot.

33. Kieren BRIGGS

Clubs: GWS Giants Academy/Allies

Position: Ruck/Key forward

Size: 200cm, 98kg

Bio: The Greater Western Sydney Academy prospect had an outstanding season and was named in the All-Australia side after the national carnival. The ruckman is physical in the contest but can also be useful at ground level where he is mobile and reasonably clean below his knees. Briggs won the Allies’ MVP after averaging 24 hit-outs during the carnival.

34. Sydney STACK

Clubs: Perth/Western Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 177cm, 72kg

Bio: On talent alone, Stack is one of the more impressive prospects to come out of Western Australia. The indigenous midfielder jumped into the WAFL league for Perth this season, not looking out of place. Stack is good at the stoppages and in the contest, possessing good smarts and skills. He has the capability to do some eye-catching things that others in the draft pool cannot.

35. Buku KHAMIS

Clubs: Western Jets/Vic Metro

Position: Key defender

Size: 190cm, 81kg

Bio: The Sudanese key defender is linked with the Western Bulldogs via their next generation academy. Khamis is a tall defender who intercepts the ball with ease in the defensive 50. The left-foot kick was also named in the Under 18 All-Australian team, averaging 14.8 disposals and 3.8 marks per game.

36. Fraser TURNER

Clubs: Clarence/Tasmania

Position: Midfielder

Size: 186cm, 75kg

Bio: The wingman runs hard all day on the outside and is a real link-up player who can get the ball from half-back to half-forward. Turner averaged 23.8 disposals for the Allies in Division 1 and was a strong performer for Tasmania in the Under 18 Academy Series. He is a reasonable kick and competes well around the ground.

37. Jack ROSS

Clubs: Oakleigh Chargers

Position: Midfielder

Size: 186cm, 85kg

Bio: The strong-bodied midfielder does everything you want from an inside player: He tackles hard and wins the clearances. While he could polish up a few things in his game, his inside work is very attractive and he is a powerful prospect. Might be one of the few prospects who didn’t represent their state during the year that will get a chance in the draft.

38. Will HAMILL

Clubs: Dandenong Stingrays

Position: Utility

Size: 185cm, 70kg

Bio: Hamill has the capabilities to play anywhere on the ground, but looks most suited to playing as a defender. In defensive 50, he has the capabilities to break the lines and rebound the ball at speed. Hamill is a decent kick of the football and can mark well overhead. Was part of the Dandenong Stingrays’ TAC Cup premiership.

39. Ely SMITH

Clubs: Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country

Position: Midfielder

Size: 188cm, 86kg

Bio: Smith’s mid-season form was so good that he was rushed into the Vic Country squad for their final match of the carnival. The contested bull averaged 23.5 disposals and 5.0 tackles at TAC Cup level and is a strong stoppage player. He proved any doubters over his running ability wrong at the AFL draft combine, performing well in the endurance events.

40. Jarrod CAMERON

Clubs: Swan Districts/Western Australia

Position: Forward

Size: 180cm, 69kg

Bio: The creative small forward has speed and goal nous, highlighted by his five goals for WA in the Under 18 Championships against Vic Country. The brother of Brisbane Lions’ Charlie has plenty of potential and is linked to the West Coast Eagles, via their next generation academy.

41. Laitham VANDERMEER

Clubs: Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country

Position: Defender

Size: 180cm, 76kg

Bio: The over-ager narrowly missed out on being drafted last year after spending most of his time at Xavier College. But the defender has line-breaking speed which can be used to his advantage. He missed a chunk of the middle of the season after an Ian Hill sling tackle in the Under 18 Championships resulted in a broken collarbone and a concussion. He showed his capabilities at times up on a wing throughout 2018.

42. Harry REYNOLDS

Clubs: Brighton Grammar/Sandringham Dragons

Position: Midfielder

Size: 190cm, 75kg

Bio: The Brighton Grammar footballer’s fine season saw him jump into the eyes of recruiters after dominating the APS private school boy competition. The on-baller has plenty of upside and moves very well in the midfield. He also has a long arm span and can leap high in the air, meaning he has the ability to play forward, which he did during his junior football days. Was a late call-up to the Sandringham Dragons squad, playing four games and averaging 17.5 disposals.

43. Jack BYTEL

Clubs: Calder Cannons/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 189cm, 80kg

Bio: It’s been a frustrating season for the inside midfielder, who was sidelined with a nasty back injury. But Bytel has enough runs on the board to suggest he should be drafted. The contested ball winner is good at the stoppages and has the ability to win plenty of the ball. Was a member of the AFL Academy.

44. Jacob KOSCHITZKE

Clubs: Murray Bushrangers/Allies

Position: Key defender

Size: 196cm, 94kg

Bio: The tall defender is a strong contested mark and won All-Australian honours after a fine Under 18 Championships. The cousin of former St Kilda player Justin Koschitzke, he’s strong in one-on-one battles and took 49 marks this season in the TAC Cup.

45. Oscar BROWNLESS

Clubs: Geelong Falcons/Vic Country

Position: Midfielder

Size: 186cm, 76kg

Bio: The son of Geelong great Billy is set to land at the club as a father-son selection. Brownless has shown his ability in 2018 playing mostly as a high half-forward, where he was a consistent performer at all levels. He has the ability to hit the scoreboard and can win the football in the contest.

46. Jacob KENNERLEY

Clubs: Norwood/South Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 184cm, 76kg

Bio: The running machine not only took out the 2km time trial at the AFL draft combine, he broke the record. Kennerley also has a good mix of speed, along with damaging skills. The midfielder is a big ball winner, blitzing the SANFL Under 18 competition for Norwood. He averaged 18.0 disposals for SA during the Under 18 Championships.

47. James ROWBOTTOM

Clubs: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 185cm, 78kg

Bio: The midfielder had a consistent season at all levels. While his foot skills is an area he can improve, his ball-winning nous and clearance work is his strength. He can win the contested ball and gets the ball inside 50 on multiple occasions during games.

48. Joe AYTON-DELANEY

Clubs: Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Defender

Size: 179cm, 68kg

Bio: The rebounding defender isn’t hard to miss during games, standing out not only with his red boots but his trademark run and dash from defensive 50. Ayton-Delaney has plenty of tricks and rebounds the ball well. He is very agile, but his small frame means he is likely to spend some time in the state leagues before AFL game time, if drafted. His very best, though, would make an impact at AFL level. He often had 20-plus disposals during the year in the TAC Cup.

49. Tom JOYCE

Clubs: East Fremantle/Western Australia

Position: Midfielder

Size: 181cm, 73kg

Bio: A hip injury curtailed Joyce’s season, but he has shown enough in the last three years to suggest he will find a home in November’s national draft. The small midfielder is a strong runner and his outstanding endurance means he can work hard all day in the middle of the ground. His tackling and pressure off the ball is also impressive. Was a member of the AFL Academy.

50. Josh KEMP

Clubs: PEGS/Calder Cannons

Position: Forward

Size: 184cm, 73kg

Bio: Kemp was a late riser after blitzing the AGSV schoolboy football competition, where he played for PEGS. Kemp booted multiple bags of goals and was called up to Calder’s TAC Cup squad, where he didn’t look out of place. Kemp showed off his strong marking ability and his mobility and goal sense. A club could well take a punt on the 18-year-old in the national draft.

The Tigers don’t exactly have a pressing need on their list, despite the Preliminary Final loss to Collingwood, and they will look to take the best available player. Half forward Sam Sturt could be the player to fall into their lap and the first-round bolter had a strong finals campaign for the Dandenong Stingrays.

Tom Joyce is highly rated in WA football circles.

Strikes me as a Vlastuin type, although not as good overhead just yet.

The VFL young guns ready for next level

JAKE AARTS, 24, RICHMOND

AARTS has been kicking around for a while — originally from Beaconsfield, he started in the VFL at Bendigo Gold under Aussie Jones, and was included in the 2014 AFL Victoria VFL Academy.

When the regional club folded Aarts joined Richmond, where he’s developed into a small forward who fights and scraps to keep the ball in scoring territory.

He hit the scoreboard in nine of his 16 matches this year and picked up an invitation to the state combine.

Lentini the pick of the bunch.

Yep. We need more good wog folk in the side. Especially with the departure of The Basin to Fremantle. Lentils fits that need. Hopefully if we draft Valente then Chesnuts can gtfo

Zak Butters plays a little like Richmond's Shane Edwards – not the big, hustling and bustling midfielder, but one who makes the most of his touches and brings others into the game.

Twomey has us considering Collier-Dawkins.

Tomorrow's Heroes: Big-bodied midfielder with loads of potential

AFL.com.au
Callum Twomey
Nov 8, 2018 [/i]

RILEY Collier-Dawkins hasn't always been a big, ball-winning midfielder who leans on his size to rack up disposals.

It wasn't until a growth spurt in his 16th year – when he shot up about eight centimetres in the space of 12 months – that Collier-Dawkins had first call on the inside midfield role.

His new-found size took some getting used to this season, as he learnt ways to use his body at the stoppages and methods to make the most of his frame, and he was also used in the forward line while playing for Vic Metro at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Why They Should Pick Him

Collier-Dawkins can show his talent in flashes. It can be a tough pick-up at ground level, or a spinning handball in the middle of traffic, or standing up in a tackle and feeding the ball out. A lot of his best work is done under pressure because he's busy when the ball's there to be won.

His finals series for the Oakleigh Chargers showed his ability as a tall and strong midfield option for clubs.

He started with 20 disposals and a goal against the Western Jets in the elimination final, before he kicked a goal from 26 disposals in the preliminary final against Gippsland Power and had 19 touches and booted 1.2 in the Grand Final loss to the Dandenong Stingrays. His clearance work, power, size and speed from the stoppage means he has some genuine AFL traits.

The Query

Until the finals series, Collier-Dawkins had been an inside midfielder who had struggled to amass bigger numbers of the ball – which in theory should be his go-to trick.

He also much prefers handballing than kicking – he handballed twice for every one of his kicks in the TAC Cup this season – so could probably better balance that and have more confidence in his kicking which can also be sharpened up.

Plays Like

Everyone looks at Carlton's Patrick Cripps as the player Collier-Dawkins should aspire to be. Cripps also went through a growth spurt in his teenage years before maturing into the commanding player he is now, but with their similar size and strengths, the likeness is obvious.

Draft Range

Collier-Dawkins has plenty of admirers in the first round of the NAB AFL Draft. Clubs looking to add to their midfield stocks, such as Greater Western Sydney, Port Adelaide, Adelaide and Richmond look likely to consider him with top-20 choices.

Bottom Line

You're not looking at the finished product just yet with Collier-Dawkins, which is the exciting part. There's so much scope for development with the 18-year-old that he could blossom in a full-time environment. You don't have to look hard to see moments in the clinches that will translate to the way AFL is played.

Read it on the AFL website. Said the Crows and Melbourne were also interested.

The 18-year-old Hill was understood to not be on the AFL's original list of players invited to the NAB AFL Draft at Marvel Stadium in two weeks' time, before scoring a ticket. More than 20 players will be at the venue for the opening night of the draft.

Included in that group is Gippsland Power's rangy midfielder Xavier Duursma, who now shapes as a top-20 smokey, and small forward/midfielder Ned McHenry, who has been linked to the Tigers, Crows and Melbourne.

The AFL website has done a list of state league players from around Australia who may be drafted:

------------------------------------------------------

VFL

Jake Aarts

Height: 178cm
Weight: 77kg
DOB: 8/12/1994
Club: Richmond

Originally from the now defunct Bendigo Gold, Aarts had his best season at VFL level for Richmond in 2018. Playing as a small forward, the 23-year-old kicked 17 goals in 16 matches. After a couple of years in the Tigers' VFL's system, Aarts' body shape is now much more conducive to playing at the level and it was telling. His special trait is being able to stand up in tackles and he's got a few tricks with the ball. Applies good forward pressure as well, which is a fundamental part of the modern game. Projects as a rookie option for clubs in need of a dynamic small forward.

Brett Bewley

Height: 186cm
Weight: 83kg
DOB: 14/4/95
Club: Williamstown

Bewley was one of the strongest performers in the NAB AFL State Draft Combine and his test results – a 2.99 in the 20m sprint and a recorded time of 22.4 in the YoYo endurance test (the best out of the national and state testing) were testament to the work he puts into his craft. Bewley, 23, is a carpenter by trade and he enjoyed a productive season with Williamstown, gathering the fourth-most disposals in the competition. He's a strong body, he kicks the ball well and he's good overhead. A strong chance to be drafted.

Michael Gibbons

Height: 175cm
Weight: 73kg
DOB: 15/5/1995
Club: Williamstown

Gibbons has been around the draft mark for a number of years but his ability to consistently win the football – he led the VFL competition in disposals (28) – has many believing this could be his year to get picked up. Gibbons tied with then Tiger, now Sun Anthony Miles for the VFL's Liston Trophy, becoming just the eighth player in history to win the award twice. Projects as a late pick or rookie selection.

Nick Hind

Height: 181cm
Weight: 70kg
DOB: 19/8/1994
Club: Essendon VFL

Hind has speed and lots of it. His two-bounce running dash through the middle of the ground to set up James Stewart's semi-final winning goal against Richmond was spectacular and would have had recruiters sitting up to take notice. Reaffirming his pace, Hind ran 2.94 seconds over 20m at the state combine. Projects well at the next level given his upside and likely to earn an opportunity. The Bombers are believed to be keen on their state league product.

Marty Hore

Height: 189cm
Weight: 81kg
DOB: 5/3/1996
Club: Collingwood

Along with Sam Collins, who was selected by Gold Coast as a state league priority signing in October, Hore was the pick of the key defenders in the VFL this season. Won Collingwood's VFL best and fairest award in 2017 and backed it up again in 2018, with his ability to intercept mark the feature of his game. Uses the ball effectively and would be ready to play next year if called upon. Some recruiters see him more as a rookie chance, but could surprise and get picked in the national draft for clubs desperately seeking key defender depth.

Tom Jok

Height: 193cm
Weight: 80kg
DOB: 1/1/97
Club: Collingwood VFL

Jok was overlooked in the both drafts last season as top-age player, but made the most of his chance with the Magpies' VFL team in 2018. Split his time with VAFA club St Kevin's Old Boys, but had the chance to display his skillset in the latter half of the year. The 21-year-old has good athleticism and endurance, and he's versatile – he played on the wing, half-forward and half-back and even in the ruck for the Pies. Training with St Kilda in the lead up to the drafts and even won the club's time trial earlier in the week.

Jay Lockhart

Height: 176cm
Weight: 75kg
DOB: 3/2/96
Club: Casey Demons

Lockhart is a tough and rugged competitor who has the ability to play in the midfield or half-back. Played every game in his first season in the VFL after making the transition from the Tasmanian State League. Lockhart can find the footy and use it efficiently. His leadership ability has grown and despite only standing 176cm he is very strong overhead for a player of his height. At least one club is believed to be interested in securing the former Tasmanian.

Corey Wagner

Height: 180cm
Weight: 74kg
DOB: 23/3/1997
Club: Casey Demons

Played eight matches with North Melbourne in 2017 before being delisted at the end of the season. Went back to play at Casey and with brother Demons-listed player Josh and shone in a role through the midfield. Wagner is great with hands, makes good decisions with the football and is a tough competitor who is regarded as having a strong work ethic.

Hayden McLean

Height: 196cm
Weight: 93kg
DOB: 20/1/1999
Club: Sandringham

Along with Jok, McLean is the other player training with St Kilda in the lead up to the Draft. At 196cm, McLean plays predominantly as a tall forward but he can go into the ruck and pinch-hit when needed. Still only 19, McLean uses his body effectively in marking contests and he has a strong set of hands. Melbourne is another club that is reportedly interested in him after they delisted Mitch King and Lachlan Filipovic.

Will Hayes

Height: 180cm
Weight: 78kg
DOB: 5/6/1995
Club: Western Bulldogs VFL

Won the Bulldogs' VFL best and fairest enjoying the most consistent of his five seasons on the club's list. Finished fifth in the League for total disposals and has improved every year he has been at the club. Was invited to the State Combine after finishing fifth in the JJ Liston Trophy count. The son of horse trainer David looms as a possible rookie selection.

Tom Atkins

Height: 180cm
Weight: 85kg
DOB: 18/9/1995
Club: Geelong VFL

Atkins finished among the VFL competition's top ten players for handballs, contested possessions, score assists, hard ball gets and clearances. He also led the League for tackles, winning his second club best and fairest award in three years (he was runner-up in 2017). The 23-year-old is a bull at the contest and he has a well-founded ability to hit the scoreboard when breaking out of congestion.

SANFL

Mitch Grigg

Height: 183cm
Weight: 83kg
DOB: 2/1/1993
Club: Norwood

The former Crow's standout game came in this year’s SANFL Grand Final when he was adjudged best afield in a losing side, gathering 31 disposals and kicking six goals in one of the most dominant displays ever seen in a state league decider. Winning back-to-back Magarey Medals in 2017 and 2018 is a huge vote of confidence for the 25-year-old to earn a second chance at AFL level. Grigg, who is damaging by foot, played 20 matches for the Crows between 2013-2016.

Darcy Fort

Height: 205cm
Weight: 99kg
DOB: 6/8/1993
Club: Central Districts

A lack of quality ruckmen in this year’s draft has Fort in the mix to be picked up by a club who needs big man depth. The 203cm ruckman missed six weeks with a wrist injury during the year but showed enough throughout the year to suggest he deserves a chance. Fort still has plenty of development left in him and is likely to benefit from being in a full-time program.

Callum Wilkie

Height: 191cm
Weight: 87kg
DOB: 10/3/1996
Club: North Adelaide

North Adelaide’s captain is one of the SANFL’s top defenders, particularly in the way he reads the football in the air and intercept marks. Improved his fitness markedly in the pre-season, winning the club’s best and fairest award in its premiership year. Attended South Australia’s state draft combine and looks like one of its most capable prospects.

WAFL

Jye Bolton

Height: 187cm
Weight: 84kg
DOB: 3/3/92
Club: Claremont

AFL.com.au reported on Friday that up to five clubs had met with Bolton, the reigning Sandover medallist and it’s not hard to see why. Bolton, a two-time winner of the League medal, averaged 30.8 disposals for the Tigers in 2018. The 26-year-old has been a model of consistency in his stint in the WAFL after spending time as a rookie at Collingwood. Sydney is one club which has shown interest in Bolton.

Jonathon Marsh

Height: 194cm
Weight: 89kg
DOB: 17/10/1995
Club: East Fremantle

The former Magpie retired at the end of 2016, with one year remaining on his contract, after his request to be traded to a WA club fell through following an ongoing mental health battle. Marsh went back to the WAFL and played two seasons for East Fremantle, coming into his own in 2018. The backman/midfielder has elite athleticism and would fit in well to an AFL defensive system because of agility and speed.

Marlion Pickett

Height: 183cm
Weight: 85kg
DOB: 6/1/1992
Club: South Fremantle

Considered by some recruiters as the most talented state league player in the country.Made the move into the midfield this season after playing across half-back and thrived this season. Pickett is skilful, he’s fast and he’s brave in the air. Gold Coast and West Coast have shown interest in the 27-year-old who has matured a lot in recent years after a stint in jail in his late teens. The Cats are another club who have been linked with the talented Pickett.

Zac Clarke

Height: 203cm
Weight: 85kg
DOB: 28/3/1990
Club: Subiaco

The former Fremantle ruckman is back on the AFL radar after a consistent season playing at Subiaco in the WAFL. The 28-year-old was delisted by the Dockers at the end of the 2017 season after a knee complaint impacted his chances. Starred with 50 hit-outs and 17 disposals in the WAFL Grand Final and may get an opportunity with Essendon and West Coast on the lookout for an experienced big man.

Matthew Parker

Height: 187cm
Weight: 79kg
DOB: 25/1/96
Club: South Fremantle

The 22-year-old is an exciting medium-sized forward with a thrilling highlights package. Parker has AFL qualities with his speed and ability to conjure a goal, booting 27 majors from 20 League games in 2018. Parker counts Pickett and Geelong’s Tim Kelly, a former teammate at South Fremantle, as strong influences in turning his career around after he was playing amateur football less than two years ago. The Swans and Essendon are two clubs who are understood to have shown interest.

NEAFL

Fraser Thurlow

Height: 199cm
Weight: 102kg
DOB: 6/1/1993
Club: Southport

Regarded by former Melbourne coach Paul Roos as a player who deserves a chance to be on an AFL list, Thurlow is a strong and physical ruckman out of Southport. After spending time on Essendon’s list a few years back, the 200cm big man has been one of the NEAFL’s most dominant ruckman.

Andrew Boston

Height: 180cm
Weight: 79kg
DOB: 23/3/1994
Club: Southport

Also out of Southport, Boston is one of the competition’s prime midfielders. Boston played 16 games for Gold Coast after being taken with pick No.55 in the 2013 Rookie Draft. Boston is a good accumulator of the footy through the midfield and at 24 understands the need to take his opportunity.

AFL Phantom Draft: Rounds 1, 2, 3

Chris Doerre
ESPN
13 November 2018

The 2018 trade period is over, but clubs can still swap picks ahead of, and during, this year's AFL Draft.

For the first time, the draft will become a two-day event -- to be held on November 22 and 23 -- with live trading of picks available, adding an extra layer of intrigue and excitement.

The order of picks will almost certainly change but as things currently stand, ESPN's AFL draft expert Chris Doerre has reached into his crystal ball to predict the first three rounds of this year's event.

The following father-son and academy prospects are likely to attract bids inside the first or second round but were not included inside this phantom draft as their clubs either do not have a pick inside the first or second round, or a bid is expected to come after their selection:

17. Richmond
Liam Stocker (VIC)

Height, Weight: 183cm, 83kg
Profile: Prolific contested ball-winner with clean skills who runs all day. Awarded the Morrish Medal for the TAC Cup's best and fairest.

37. Richmond
Tom Sparrow (SA)

Profile: Possessing comparable talent to ex-Adelaide great Andrew McLeod and Hawthorn veteran Shaun Burgoyne, Rankine can turn games like no one else in this draft. A season one-ready forward and midfielder with speed, skill, goal sense and ball-winning capabilities.

Max King (VIC)

Ben King (VIC)
Height, Weight: 202cm, 85kg

Another player who is understood to have received a late invitation to the draft is Curtis Taylor, who could be in the Eagles' sights with their pair of selections.

Taylor is a smart and crafty half-forward who plays in a similar fashion to retired Eagle Mark LeCras.

Richmond and Adelaide could also consider Taylor, who is viewed as one of the draft's best finishers close to goal.

From a WA perspective, I will be surprised if:

Stack goes that late. Personally think he is a better prospect than Ian Hill.

Tyron Smallwood isn't drafted in the top three rounds. Not the quickest, not the hardest, not the biggest or strongest, just knows how to play the game. Great footy smarts.

Marlion Pickett lasts until pick 48. Can definately see him going to the Roos,  but for an earlier pick. Have heard the Cats are very keen here as well.

Jordan Clark goes top 10. Too much athletic football talent ahead of him. 11-16 about his range in this field.

Also, FWIW, I have heard that Sparrow is a pretty ropey kick, and decision making not great under pressure.

So he probably has elite disposal and a great footy brain, but anyways.....

Twomey in his latest podcast on the AFL website has Stocker as fitting our needs best.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Cal Twomey and AFL talent ambassador Kevin Sheehan simulate the first round of the draft by picking for the clubs based on their needs.

It is not a phantom draft but instead the guys focus on which player would suit the respective clubs.

1. Carl - Sam Walsh
2. GC - Jack Lukosius
3. GC - Izak Rankine
4. StK - Max King
5. Port - Ben King
6. GC - Connor Rozee (Kevin Sheehan reckons Adelaide will try to offer picks 13 & 16 for pick 6 here)
7*. Syd - Nick Blakey (match F/S Bid)
8. WB - Bailey Smith
9. Adel - Jackson Hately
10. GWS - Jye Caldwell
11. Port - Jordan Clark
12*. Coll - Issac Quaynor (match Academy bid)
13. GWS - Zak Butters
14. Geel - Chayce Jones
15* North - Tarryn Thomas (match F/S bid)
16. Adel - Riley Collier-Dawkins
17. Freo - Ian Hill
18. Port - Xavier Duursma
19. Adel - Luke Valente

20. Rich - Liam Stocker.

Tiges have lost some midfield depth. Stocker won the Morrish medal. Big body mid. Kicks well on both feet. Digs in in the midfield and delivers well. Needs to work on his running. Expects him to rise to the expected level of an AFL/Richmond midfielder.

21. Bris - Curtis Taylor
22. GWS - Sam Sturt
23*. WB - Rhylee West (match F/S bid)
24. WCE - Tom Joyce

RICHMOND TIGERS

Draft picks after the trade period: 17, 37, 64, 68, 74, 92

What Richmond needs

A trade period that saw Tom Lynch come in and a bevy of depth players go out sees the emphasis move from key forwards to midfielders at Tigerland.

The elite onballers are still at the club, but the loss of Reece Conca, Corey Ellis, Anthony Miles and Sam Lloyd doesn’t leave a lot in reserve, so running players capable of doing their apprenticeship in the back half will be a priority. There’s still no shortage of smalls up forward.

The ruck is another area of ongoing concern at Richmond as Toby Nankervis continues to shoulder the great bulk of the load.

Ivan Soldo and young Callum Coleman-Jones are capable footballers, but another understudy in the system wouldn’t hurt.

Richmond’s likely draftees

The Tigers did well with pick 17 last year, snatching Jack Higgins, and they’ll back themselves to get it right again.

Luke Valente is the type of midfielder Richmond has been targeting of late – hard working, ball winning and a natural leader. He captained the South Australian side to victory at the under-18 championships and impressed all good judges along the way.

Victorian Xavier Duursma is another that would seem right in yellow and black. Duursma will be an AFL midfielder in time, but has the game to be able to do a more-than-serviceable job as a running defender while he bulks up .

This year’s draft bolter could well be Sam Sturt, a natural forward with a beautiful left boot. Sturt started the year low in draft calculations but finished the year on a high and could catch the eye of the Tigers.

Sam Landsberger says Stocker will appeal to Richmond.

26. Liam Stocker (Sandringham Dragons)

H: 183cm, W: 83kg

Averaged only 18 disposals, 10 contested possessions and four clearances in first six matches before injury and then shot to 25 disposals, 14 contested possessions and six clearances from final nine games. Ranked in top five players for contested possessions and clearances across whole season.

SAM SAYS:
Grew up in Hong Kong and has shot up draft boards since recovering from a broken jaw. TAC Cup Morrish Medallist will appeal to Richmond and GWS late in first round.

Plays like:
Stephen Coniglio (GWS)

That post is mostly correct. They asked us not to divulge anything said. However, the suggestions made on here are around the mark of what we're looking at. :shh

Ps. Matt Clarke said they rated Graham in the 20's in his draft year. :shh

Foxfooty has us also "particularly interested" in Stocker (they have him at pick 26 in their phantom draft).

They have O'Hallaron at our pick 17.

17. XAVIER O’HALLORAN

Clubs: Western Jets/Vic Metro

Position: Midfield

Size: 186cm, 84kg

Plays Like: Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs)

Champion Data says: O’Halloran placed third on the AFL Ratings at the Championships from just 13 disposals per match. He rated elite for both goals and assists and gained 24 metres per disposal. He had seven kicks inside 50 marked, with no other player above four.

foxfooty.com.au says: When you talk about the best leaders in the draft pool, it is hard to look past O’Halloran. The inside midfielder showed his versatility during the Under 18 Championships, pushing forward and booting goals. His contested ball numbers are very good and he is a player who impacts the game with plenty of clearances, inside 50s and tackles. Likely to get picked up in the second round of the draft.

26. LIAM STOCKER

Clubs: Sandringham Dragons

Position: Midfield

Size: 183cm, 85kg

Plays Like: Stephen Coniglio (GWS Giants)

Champion Data says:
Stocker averaged just 18 disposals, 10 contested possessions and four clearances through his first six matches, but upon returning from injury he averaged 25 disposals, 14 contested possessions and six clearances from his final nine games. Across the entire season he ranked in the top five players for both contested possessions and clearances.

foxfooty.com.au says: The contested ball winner missed the Under 18 Championships due to a broken jaw. However he bounced back superbly in the TAC Cup to claim the Morrish medal as the competition’s best and fairest player. Coming out of stoppages, he can use the ball off either foot. His draft range lies somewhere between Picks 15 and 25, with Richmond particularly interested.

cont:

Twomey has us interested in Collier-Dawkins, Taylor, Hill, Stocker & McHenry.

16. R. Collier-Dawkins
Midfielder,   193cm, 88kg, DOB 3/2/00   From Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

After a growth spurt in recent years it took some time for Collier-Dawkins to know how to use his size and frame in the midfield this season. He felt it come together more in the back-end of the year and that came through in his finals series for the Oakleigh Chargers, when Collier-Dawkins was excellent and averaged 21 disposals and a goal over three games. A big-bodied midfielder whose flashes of brilliance at the stoppages take the eye and whose upside is promising.

Where does he go? The Giants have been linked to Collier-Dawkins, as have the Cats. It's unlikely he gets through to Richmond at pick 17 but if he does they'll consider.

17. Curtis Taylor
Half-For/Mid, 186cm, 79kg, DOB 6/4/00   From Calder Cannons/Vic Metro

The ability to make something out of nothing is something that can separate Taylor from many of his peers in this draft class. The classy half-forward battled some injury niggles across the year, but showed he has genuine class around goal and brilliant finishing skills. He leads well at the ball as a medium forward and can be trusted to convert his chances.

Where does he go?Has received a late call-up to the draft, so is in the mix for the top-20. West Coast will look at him at No.20 and 22, while he will also be in the mix for the Tigers (pick 17) and Giants (pick 19).

18. Ian Hill

Mid/Half-For, 175cm, 76kg, DOB 9/2/00,  From Perth/WA

With genuine speed, dash and skills, Hill has traits that few in the draft possess. The West Australian started the season viewed as a potential top-five pick, but his year was also bookended by shoulder surgeries, which meant he never quite got going. But Hill has pace (he has run the 20m sprint in 2.82 seconds), he can jump on heads and take big marks and he's also clever around goal. The cousin of Fremantle pair Stephen and Bradley Hill is small and light, but he packs in plenty of ability.

Where does he go? Port and the Giants met with Hill recently, so he's a chance for their picks in the teens. Richmond will also look at him if he gets through to their selection, while he has been linked to West Coast.

19. Liam Stocker

Midfielder,  183cm, 83kg, DOB 23/1/00  From Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro

An excellent second half of the season saw Stocker storm home to take out the TAC Cup's Morrish Medal. He's a hard-bodied, big and strong inside midfielder who kicks the ball well on both feet. He's confident in his ability and averaged 22 disposals a game for the Dragons this year. Stocker has come from a little further back than others given he missed the national carnival with a broken jaw, but he made up for lost time to push himself into first-round contention.

Where does he go? Another who is a chance to end up as a Giant, while Richmond could also have a think about Stocker with their first choice. Melbourne looks a possible home at No.23 if he got that far.

23. Edward McHenry

Mid/Small For, 178cm, 71kg, DOB 13/7/00 From Geelong Falcons/Vic Country

McHenry's relentless run and tireless work ethic underpins his game. He's a tough, competitive small forward/midfielder who works up and down the ground and uses his outstanding aerobic base to impact games. He averaged 21 disposals in eight games for the Geelong Falcons, and played a crafty role closer to goal for Vic Country. Can get in the face of opponents and always plays with enthusiasm and spark.

Where does he go? Richmond is interested in McHenry, and their pick 17 would probably be the earliest he could go. Adelaide is keen at No.21, while Melbourne's picks in the 20s will also be a chance.

Unlikely to go for McHendry although he is in the mix. Taylor not in their calculations. Club rated Hill in top 5 at the start of the year but has slid and probably feel he is the best player that might be available at our pick but isn't what we necessarily need..... :shh

Meet Ned McHenry: The draft prospect who goes for casual 30km runs

AFL.com.au
Callum Twomey
Nov 16, 2018

NED McHENRY went for a run this week, which is not an unusual practice for a draft prospect less than 10 days away finding out where he will start his AFL career.

Except this run went for 30km. He left his house in Geelong, headed for nearby suburb Highton and ended up at Barwon Heads on a warm Tuesday night.

"It probably was a bit of a weird thing to do," the Geelong Falcon told AFL.com.au.

"I go for a long run occasionally and I don't take any headphones, I just run. There were stages when I was thinking 'I could stop now, the road is pretty busy' but I didn't really want to stop."

Running underpins McHenry's nature as a footballer: he's a relentless prospect with a work ethic almost unmatched in this year's draft pool.

He won the Yo-Yo test at last month's NAB AFL Draft Combine (the endurance test that replaced the beep) and came sixth in the 2km time trial.

It's partly why some clubs, including Richmond, Adelaide and Melbourne, are considering taking the 178cm McHenry with top-25 picks when names are called at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night and Friday.

He's a tenacious tackler who can play forward, add pressure and create, and he can also move through the midfield and work up and down the ground. Which takes us back to the running.

McHenry wasn't always a dominant runner.

Growing up in Macedon before moving to Geelong in grade six. He spent years seven and eight at Geelong College, before his mum Sam decided it was a good idea for him to cross schools and spend year nine at Geelong Grammar's Mount Timbertop campus three hours out of Geelong.

Timbertop is a full-time boarding campus of the school where the full year level is isolated from family and friends in a bid to improve independence, with a wide outdoors curriculum. It was also where McHenry's running strength came alive.

"It was a crazy year. Footy was big to me so not being able to play that year was something I missed. But reflecting on it, Timbertop was amazing," he said.

Some of the challenges we had to face, like waking up really early and going hiking for six days with everything we needed on our backs, was huge

"We did a lot of running and at the start you think 'How am I going to get through this?' but everyone finds a way. They do a marathon that's about 30km at the end of the year, which you build up to, and I remember coming up that last hill and knowing it was the last time I'd do it. That's when I understood why it was all worth it."

McHenry won that marathon, by the way.

He became obsessed with his running, and was keen to follow a mentor at Geelong Grammar, Ross Hopkins, into completing a 100km surf coast run. Footy got in the way, though, as his Falcons pre-seasons started to take shape.

McHenry went back to Geelong College in year 10, where he has completed his schooling this year, but his running capacity continued to grow. The competitive 18-year-old sees it now as one of his major weapons as a player, knowing he can outwork whoever he's on. He also enjoys the freedom a run brings.

"Sometimes I run to clear my mind and sometimes I run to get my mind busy. I think about everything when I'm out there. I think about some weird stuff. I've got a list on my phone and a hard copy diary of ideas I have, so I might come across them when I'm running and then jot it down," he said.

"I have all kinds of things – ideas for businesses, ideas for inventions, ideas for things I want to do in my life, ideas for my coffee table I want to have when I'm older. I've got a massive list."

The coffee table, for what it's worth, would be see-through and would allow McHenry to see plants and cactus' grow inside it. "I reckon that'd be epic," he said.

He has other ideas. "Also, when I'm older, I once a fortnight want to have someone random over for dinner. It might be like a Thursday every second week, it might be someone I've met down at the newsagents," McHenry said.

"Don't you think that'd be epic? Doing that once a fortnight when you meet someone new in your life. You'd learn cooking with it. It'd be cool."

McHenry is an energetic, on-the-go personality. He's inquisitive and chatty, interested and interesting. He loves to get out on his boat and go fishing and next year is hoping to study a media course. Clubs enjoy his enthusiasm and natural spark, and have seen the impact he has on teammates.

"I've always enjoyed my footy and my personality's come out through that. Everyone's a little bit different. I've always been the more bubbly and positive person," he said.

"I don't know if [clubs] enjoy it. They probably hate it. I really just do try to be myself in interviews. I definitely just try to present as myself and that's just who I am. I don't try to be upbeat every morning, but usually I am excited about it all."

He has reason to be excited at the moment. He recently got a call from the AFL's national talent ambassador Kevin Sheehan asking him to attend the draft next week, and he can't help but wonder about what it would be like to hear his name called by an AFL club.

"I haven't necessarily been the most talented kid as a junior or even this year, but my intensity with my training and energy on and off the field is something I've really tried to bring," he said.

"I had a laugh to 'Shifter' when he was on the phone and he invited me to the draft and he said, 'Who would have thought this two years ago?' And I reckon it's true, in a way. I think I've earned this position to give myself a go."

* The pick ranges tell us that Riley Collier-Dawkins (12th to 30th) and Liam Stocker (11th to 26th) are two of the hardest players to predict currently.

* Luke Valente is notable as ranked 10th by Champion Data, and no higher than 16th by any of our draft watchers.

RICHMOND

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey:

A strong midfielder could be the target for the Tigers, bringing Liam Stocker or Xavier Duursma into the equation. They could also add another small forward to their list, with Ian Hill and Ned McHenry on the radar.

DRAFT NEEDS

The Tigers made great use of their first pick last season, landing lively forward Jack Higgins at pick 17. The club have exactly the same selection this time around but they won't use it on a small forward, with a midfielder the more likely target, having used their first selection in four of the past five national drafts to land Higgins, Shai Bolton, Dan Rioli and Ben Lennon.

Hard-at-it midfielder Liam Stocker would be a good selection and become the second consecutive Morrish Medal winner picked by the Tigers at 17 if they went down that track. Stocker would be a safe pick and add depth to the Tigers' inside game where he could learn off some of the best in the business, while Riley Collier-Dawkins would be a good choice if still available. He showed his class with the Oakleigh Chargers in the finals, while Ian Hill would be a speculative selection with the creative, skilful midfielder likely to need some time to flourish.

It's also time for the Tigers to build some depth among the tall defenders with Alex Rance and David Astbury's resilience in recent seasons buying the Tigers some time. Western Australia's Damon Greaves could be tempting at pick 37, although the Tigers might dive in even later to get a back to develop such as Gippsland Power's Kyle Reid or the Eastern Ranges' James Blanck.

Richmond have also committed to picking up premiership forward Jacob Townsend as a rookie after he was delisted last month.

Garthwaite, Balta and Miller in reserve with grimes, broad and to a lesser extent vlastuin all being able to fill a kpd spot.

Would draft inside minds, rucks, outside runners (wings, half back flankers) and kpf all before thinking about kpd.

The Herald-Sun's phantom draft has us taking Stocker.

But then they also say:

Hawthorn is circling Liam Stocker and Jack Gunston-clone Noah Gown late in the draft order.

The Hawks are slated to enter the draft at No.53 and would have to trade their way up the order to land Stocker, who is tipped to go in the top 25.

Callum Twomey on the AFL website also has us taking Stocker.

He also links us to McHenry, Hill and Sturt.

LIAM STOCKER

POS: Midfielder
Ht 183cm, Wt 83kg, DOB 23/1/00
From Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro

Stocker won the Morrish Medal in the TAC Cup after storming home in the back end of the season, having missed the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with a broken jaw. He's a big and strong midfielder who is great at the stoppages, a nice kick on both feet and will back himself to play plenty of senior footy next year. An articulate, confident character who might have been ranked a little higher if not for his interrupted first half of the season. The Tigers lost some depth in the midfield in the Trade Period and bringing in another ball-winner could be a priority.

If not him?
The Tigers will look at Ned McHenry if he's there, while Ian Hill is also right in the frame if available. His ability may be too hard to pass up even if he's not exactly what the Tigers are after. Sam Sturt is a possibility although unlikely.

AFL Draft preview: Richmond

November 20, 2018
by Peter Williams
afldraftcentral.com.au

THE 2017 premiers bowed out in disappointing circumstances in the preliminary final to a red-hot Collingwood, but then got the man they were after in Gold Coast’s Tom Lynch to boost the key forward stocks at the club. Richmond was often beaten at the stoppages, so big-bodied inside midfielders are the main priority at this year’s draft,  as well as some depth on the outside, and likely another ruck.

List needs:

    Big-bodied inside midfielder/s
    Ruck
    Outside midfielder depth

Draft Picks: 17, 37, 64, 68, 74, 92

Richmond is a fairly settled side heading into the AFL Draft but there are plenty of names being linked to the Tigers with their first selection. Expect it to be best available, though if that happens to be an inside midfielder, all the better. Liam Stocker seems to be the name mostly linked to Richmond at pick 17, while Luke Valente could be a chance given the pick is likely to be pushed beyond 20 with bids coming into play. With a late draft invitation today, Ely Smith could be the late bolter who Richmond turn to on the night. Perhaps the Tigers might opt for a more rounded Xavier Duursma, or they might look to the leadership of Ian Hill despite the need for bigger bodies. Do not be shocked if someone like a Richmond pulls the trigger on West Australian, Luke Foley, though with Stocker likely on the board, Richmond would be expected to opt for the Sandringham midfielder. Ned McHenry or Sam Sturt are others who are expected to be available and could be highly rated by the club.

With pick 37, there are likely to be plenty of inside midfielders available should the Tigers hold off on their round one selection. Or they could double dip taking Stocker, then selecting Calder Cannons co-captain, Jack Bytel with this selection. James Rowbottom could be there, although Essendon have strong interest in him at pick 34. Small in stature but bigger in body size, inside bulls Tom Joyce or Tom Lewis might come into consideration knowing neither will be there at Richmond’s next pick. Jack Ross is another player who the Tigers might look at as a more balanced option who is still more developed than most others.

With their remaining selections, expect the Tigers to take best available, which in our Phantom Draft, was Tom McKenzie, Harry Reynolds and Brayden Ham, all of whom are very different players and offer different skillsets for the Tigers. At these late picks it is hard to pick who will be there, but they could consider ruck, Riley Bowman potentially if he is still on the board, or if they are looking for some outside run and kicking, perhaps Gippsland Power’s Matthew McGannon, or Western Australia’s Damon Greaves. In the forward half, Tyron Smallwood or Angus Hanrahan might come into the Tigers’ thinking, or they could take a mature-age ruck in Darcy Fort potentially.

Both the Herald-Sun and The Age have us going for Stocker in their respective phantom drafts:

21. RICHMOND — Liam Stocker (Sandringham Dragons)

183cm, 83kg midfielder

Tigers need to add to their midfield stocks and Stocker is a strong and accomplished ballwinner. Needs to build tank.

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-draft-2018-sam-landsberger-and-jay-clark-predict-how-the-first-round-will-unfold/news-story/18de94c91a9c1896d16f70226ce387c6

20. RICHMOND

Liam Stocker (midfielder) 183cm 85kg Sandringham Dragons

Supreme competitor Stocker won the Morrish Medal after an excellent year for the Dragons despite missing the national championships due to injury. Ely Smith has been invited to the draft and is considered an outside chance here, while the Tigers are believed to like McHenry a lot.

Everytime there's a bid for a F/S or academy player then everyone else gets pushed down a spot in the draft. There's expected to be 3-4 bids before our first pick so our first pick could end up at 20 or 21.

It's because of the bidding process for Academy players. If a club picks another team's Academy player at say pick 8 and the other team bids on it and has the necessary number of points, they then move their first pick to pick 8 and every one else is pushed down the order. As Adelaide has several picks in the top 20, it will be up to them to make the bids at their pick.If nobody picks these guys, they slip down and can be obtained with a clubs 2nd pick or later and so it's in every ones interest to bid for players and force the other club to use high picks on them. I hope that makes sense.

Buckenara has Bailey Smith as his 6th best player in the draft.

Top 50: Buckenara’s mega draft preview

THIS year’s draft has been touted as the next “super draft” and while it would be unfair to place such big expectations on the draft class, the talent available in the first round in particular is especially strong.

I’ve watched these players since they were 16 and tracked them throughout this year during the various state-based competitions, the under-18 national championships and their testing at the draft combine.

The 2018 draft should produce a number of quality midfielders for the future as it’s especially strong for mid-sized onballers — both inside and outside players — while there are a number of talented halfbacks available. The number of nice midfielders and defenders should extend into the later rounds of the draft, where I expect some gems to be unearthed.

At the top end of the draft there are a few very nice key position players but the depth of talent available in that area does taper off.

For clubs looking for ruckmen, however, the news isn’t as good. There aren’t many options available so clubs will likely need to look to state leagues or recycled players to bolster ruck stocks for 2019.

17. Hill
18. Taylor
19. Stocker
20. West (F/S Dogs)
21. Valente

 :shh :pray :shh

RICHMOND has launched an audacious play to move seven spots up the AFL draft order to secure one of the best midfielders in the 2018 pool.

With live trading introduced for the first time this year, the Tigers are believed to be considering a deal in order to secure Vic Metro MVP Bailey Smith.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the Tigers are monitoring a situation that could see the midfielder slip down to Port Adelaide’s Pick 10, which may open the door for the Tigers to jump up the draft order.

Richmond currently holds Pick 17 and has the capability to trade its future first-round pick. A deal would likely only get done if the Tigers could satisfy the Power and if the Power weren’t locked in to the Sandringham Dragons leader with their second pick.

There is belief around the industry that the key to unlocking such a deal is the first move between the GWS Giants and the Western Bulldogs.

Both clubs are set to orchestrate a pick swap, which would see the Giants trade up to secure Pick 7 and the Bulldogs trade back to either Pick 9 or 11.

If it is the latter, the Tigers would elect to swoop and try and do a deal with the Power to take Smith.

It’s understood the Giants have put in ample time and research into Smith, who’s one of the draft class’ most dedicated trainers and top midfield prospects.

But it’s also believed the Giants are eyeing off Vic Country midfielder Jye Caldwell, who could be available at Pick 7, with several sources suggesting the top six is likely locked in.

Adelaide has also been fans of Caldwell, but may look to grab Tasmanian on-baller Chayce Jones with Pick 8.

The Western Bulldogs would be more likely to want to grab Pick 9 rather than 11, not leaving the Tigers an opportunity to deal with the Power.

The clubs matching F/S or Academy bids use lower picks to reach the points value of the pick of the bid. So they lose they later picks but everyone else moves down one for each bid matched. Hope that makes sense, FH.

So if you assume this Adel have traded Pick 19 this year for Pick 1-4 next year.
Carlton get Pick 19 this year and pick 14-18 next year for Pick 1-4 next year.

Hard to evaluate.  Two late first round picks for a high first round pick. The more I think about the more I am unsure who got the best deal.  That probably means it was a even trade.

Rookie draft should be interesting 4 spots after Weller & Townsend , 3 if we re-rookie Chol.,,,got a feeling we might leave a spot free for the mid-season draft... :shh :shh

Quality state leaguers like Gibbons, Lentini, Grigg, Pickett all still available...Jordan Sweet if we dont re-rookie Chol.. and big sliders like Stack, Grundy , Lewis and Podjhalski or however you spell it.... :shh :shh :shh

I still reckon on what I have seen that Stack is a better prospect than Hill.

Also am suprised that Jye Bolton didn't get picked up by Gold Coast. Reckon they could have done with a nice big bodied bloke to go into the middle, and he is a dual Sandover medallist.

I'd have liked us to have picked up Tyron Smallwood as a rookie. Lot of upside.

From watching the clips of our first 3 picked, I would say 3 pretty solid safish picks. Ross looks the most ready for AFL IMO and not just on size and body shape.

No real weapons to see at this stage but you never know. (I though the same about Vlastuin when we first drafted him and how wrong I was- Star!!)

I still hate seeing FJ anywhere near the club. I wish the old fool would FRO.

Also wrapped that Townsend is still a Tiger but think Chol and even more so Aarts are extremely lucky.  Think we could have better there.

Anyway looking forward to seeing them all develop over the next 4 or so months during preseason.

Was initially annoyed we didn't trade back into the top 30-40 but not so much now...and maybe we tried but were gazumped - who knows... :shh

RCD made the draft and the off-season for me....club took my first choice with it frst pick for once.....as stoked -as the kids woulds say- about it as getting Lynch, maybe even moreso.... :shh

Can't say Ross was in any of my pre-draft thoughts but he looks the right size & AFL ready... :shh

English was a steal..... :clapping

Fitter and Turner is a clearly wake up call to Menadue and possibly Markov too .....personally I would've gone Darcy Fort with this pick....and delisated Soldo and got Grundy  - the absolute steal of the draft IMO  (though we probably could've dome that and still picked Thomas or even an earlier pick  had either Menadue been traded or delisted  or Grigg retired like they should've been).. ..Grundy, Balta & Gathwaite would've made the transition from Rance, Grimes & Astbury seemless...  :shh

Rookie draft - would've gone Lentini, Gibbons, Stack or at least Mannagh if we insisted on drafting from within over Aarts or even Sweet for more ruck depth and Mitch Grigg over Weller....  :shh

p.s. Carlton not realising we were only taking Stocker because we assumed RCD wouldn't still  be there - gold! :clapping :shh

Makes a good story because it hurts the Blues but...…...not sure if it is actual true.

I have it from a good source that West Coast forced this trade.

Apparently Stocker was firmly in the Eagles sights. Both the Eagles and Carlton knew that the Tigers would grab RCD if he was available. It is no doubt true that the Tigers didn't think he would last to our pick.

When it became apparent that RCD would be available to the Tigers, the Blues acted. The couldn't get a trade done with the Tigers, who were not prepared to miss on RCD. Ditto the Lions who wanted Smith and wouldn't trade. The Eagles deal with GWS included a commitment that the Giants would not take Stocker, so the Eagles were set to pounce with pick 23.

So Adelaide got the lollies from the Blues. The Eagles then traded down with GC, who badly wanted McLennan.

The Eagles, apparently, did not have that great of a draft as per what they hoped to achieve. They did some live trading early to try and get a pick in the 11-15 range, but couldn't get it done. Not sure who their target at that stage was. They missed on Stocker as well.

Incorrect. RCD was in the next batch of 13 players who were a possibility of being drafted. However, Matt Clarke didn't think he would get to us and felt Stocker and a few others would. So he rated RCD higher than Stocker. He felt Stocker needed to work a lot on his running.

Realistically they were hoping RCD would slide but weren't hopeful. They also had Hately up high and possibly gettable but again unlikely to get to them. The rest included Valente (great character and leadership), Stocker obviously, Briggs (GWS academy and thus unlikely), Hill (not what they wanted although rated very highly), Sam Sturt and a few others like McHendry.

CARLTON draftee Liam Stocker recently described a "confronting" interview with Richmond, where the Tigers challenged the midfielder on his lack of endurance.

Should he earn a round one debut, the big-bodied onballer is ready to show the Tigers how much he has improved his running base since they last met.

"I've always played with a chip on my shoulder," Stocker said.

"I don't mind it when I've got a little bit more motivation to go with it.

"They certainly made me very aware of what my weaknesses were, and I think I probably needed it at that stage. You can go too far in TAC Cup footy getting told how good you are and not getting told what your weaknesses are, so I certainly needed it."

The AFL website reckons we would've taken Hill if Collier-Dawkins hadn't been available.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If the Dogs had taken Caldwell, Smith would have gotten past Adelaide and the Giants, and Port Adelaide would not have drafted him either.

It's why Richmond, who started the draft back at pick 17, were in touch with Port Adelaide on draft day and were monitoring the situation if Smith became available. A trade offer for Port's second pick was likely if Smith slipped past the Dogs.

But Smith didn't drop.

Port weighed up Clark with its second choice (No.12) before going with Butters, but that selection had implications. Geelong (No.15) chose between Clark and Riley Collier-Dawkins, having called Clark five times during his flight from Perth to Melbourne on Thursday. They wanted to triple-check he was fine about relocating, but after he gave his assurances, chose him that night ahead of Victorian Collier-Dawkins.

Had Port picked Clark, Geelong would likely have chosen Collier-Dawkins and Richmond, back at their No.20 pick, would have had a much different night given they were relieved Collier-Dawkins was still available at their spot.

Adelaide (No.16) wanted McHenry for a long time and weighed up trying to slide him through to their third pick. However, Port would have taken the small forward with the following selection, and the Tigers loomed large too, so the Crows pounced.

Collier-Dawkins was at this point falling down the order, which made other clubs jump to attention. St Kilda was particularly active in trying to get back into the first round, with Collier-Dawkins believed to be on their radar. They offered the Crows a similar trade to Carlton for that pick 19, including the Saints' top pick next year, but Adelaide knocked it back.

He wasn't in the minds of Port with their third pick (No.18), and neither was Stocker, with the club believing it had enough bigger-bodied midfielders.

Carlton surprised many when it traded its first-round pick for next year to Adelaide for the Crows' pick 19 this year and their first-rounder next year, so they could jump up to take midfielder Liam Stocker, who had fallen down the draft board.

The Blues rated Stocker as the sixth best player in the 2018 crop, and wanted another midfielder to bring in alongside their No.1 choice Sam Walsh.

Richmond spoke to Collier-Dawkins in the days before the draft but had he not gotten through to them, the Tigers would likely have chosen Hill of the remaining players, his talent too hard to pass up despite the Tigers not necessarily being desperate for another small forward. The Tigers had more calls for that selection but held it and added to their midfield.

Further proof that, in the early stages of the draft at least, every pick has an implication for the next, and the next and the next.

The draft club videos are quite funny to watch. In particular CC from the Suns posturing and the boys saying how well they had done forgetting the only reason they have early picks is due to their horrendous performance and inability to hold onto players.  I could have rocked up there and got their first 3 spot on.  Also turning 2 picks into 1 for a player rated 25ish and may have gone later.  I guess that's what live trading is all about.

I am not sure what clubs have to gain by making these public knowledge? I guess they have no choice as they are an AFL production.
