Can Dusty get better? Caddy says he “wouldn’t be surprised”

While Dustin Martin completed one of the game’s greatest individual seasons in 2017, teammate Josh Caddy says the Brownlow Medallist is only just starting to enter his peak period.
The 26-year-old made an excellent start to 2018, with 24 disposals and a goal, playing just three quarters of Richmond’s crushing 87-point JLT Community Series victory against Essendon in Wangaratta.
“He went off at three quarter time and he was still best on ground, had the most footy and the most influence on the game. He’s an unbelievable player,” Caddy said on SEN Afternoons.
“He’s only 26. They say players hit their prime between that 25-28 age bracket, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets better this year.”
Caddy says the format change of the JLT Series has ensured games are being taken more seriously, in order to ride momentum into round one.
“With the changes in the format this year, with only the two games, we were taking it very seriously and wanted to win,” he said.
“We want to hit the ground running going into the season. We started well against Essendon, and we’ll try and do exactly the same against North Melbourne next Wednesday.
“We’re in good nick, and we’re pretty confident about the year ahead and very excited.”
The Tigers incessant pressure, one of the great trademarks from their premiership campaign appeared to have lost none of its bite in their first hitout, but Caddy says they cannot afford to flirt with their performance.
“Coming off the back of last year, we don’t want to be flirting with form and thinking we can take liberties, because we can’t,” he said.
“We’re a blue collar side and we’ve got to bring that style of footy every week, otherwise we’ll get found out, and we’ll be no good.
“We rely on that manic game style and pressure, and hunting the opposition.”
