Richmond and Melbourne’s Anzac Day eve clash might surpass Collingwood-Essendon
Herald Sun
April 8, 2018 10:23pm
BOTH are 2-1 and while it’s still a week away, it’s already being eyed off by fans not only of the two clubs — but across the AFL competition.
Richmond and Melbourne are both expected to be right there when the whips are cracking in September, and their new rivalry — forged by an Anzac eve clash — promises to be a cracker.
But could it be the new marquee game of the round?
Our panellists — Mick Warner, Jay Clark and Sam Landsberger — believe the game could draw a crowd in excess of 90,000.
“That’s got the potential to be bigger than Anzac Day (Collingwood v Essendon),” Herald Sun reporter Sam Landsberger said.
Colleague and fellow podcast member Jay Clark agreed.
“So Melbourne-Richmond could be the biggest regular-season game of the AFL fixture.”

If it wasa RFC home game then yes it would get a bigger crowd
But it's the Dees' home game this year so....

I believe that the game is nearly a sell out and we know that the MCC will be full.....

Bearing in mind I live interstate I always thought the number of MCG members actually attending dictated if the crowd was over 90,000 in these blockbuster games. And Melbourne has the majority of MCG members supporting them.

Lucky snow season hasn't kicked in yet.
Don't forget to take a cheese platter guys.

Dreading this game. I don't even get satisfaction from beating them, just relief. Such a pee ant club. Never seen anyone pump up their own tyres for achieving absolutely so little more than this mob. The players and the supporters have such poo attitudes and the AFL continually props them up, doesn't matter what they do. They're borderline GWS with the amount of top draft picks they have running around they still can't fire a shot. Is there anything more ridiculous than the cardboard cutouts in their cheer squad? I don't know if it's creepy or juvenile. I got sick of being compared to them 10 years ago and they've had huge chips on their shoulders against us ever since. Hope the Hawks do them over and we do the same so they can miss the finals yet again after spending another off season beating their chests.
-
The complete farce of their "punishment" for being "not guilty of being not guilty of tanking" that subsequently became a reward is why any success they have will have no real credibilty and be a disgrace to the game.
-
If it weren't for their name and the MCC they would have packed up a long time ago.

Love this post. Haven't done anything worthy for over 50 years and still cry when the rest of the football world chuckle at their irrelevance. Entitled and arrogant for what?
Probably the 4th best day of last year for me was when we beat the Saints in the final home and away to secure the top 4 - and then on to the pub to watch West Coast run over Adelaide to steal Melbournes spot. :lol :lol :lol
-
The only thing relevant about Melbourne is that they are named after our city. Bit like James Packer really...

I’ve got a Dees mate and it wasn’t long ago he would carry on how they’ve gone past us. When they played the Saints last year the winner was meant to be a lock for finals and loser out. Melbourne won and he put a photo on FB from the MCG with the caption “can you smell September?!” After West Coast beat Adelaide by whatever margin they needed to make finals I went back to that photo for a cheeky little ‘like’.

So good.
I found a twitter post from a crows fan on GF day wishing them all the best for an exciting day ahead. I liked it on Saturday

I got it wrong, I forgot they beat Brisbane so they’ll only be 2-3, not 1-4. Same sentiment though, they’re already getting pretty restless after a bog average first four games same would love to see them lose their poo losing to us.

SUMMARY
After a demoralising 67-point loss to Hawthorn, Melbourne must hit back, and hit back hard. The Demons were thoroughly outplayed against the Hawks, allowing Alastair Clarkson's team to pile on 18 goals while only scoring six themselves. Melbourne must figure out how to make the most of its inside 50 entries, with the Demons leading the competition in that category. Its efficiency, though, has been a major problem for Simon Goodwin's side. The Demons must also settle down its back 50, with the club prone to leaking plenty of points to the opposition. The Tigers, on the other hand, have been excellent and sit third on the ladder after four rounds. Richmond's tackling pressure has remained a constant and its ability to win the territory battle has been crucial to its wins. Led by Alex Rance and David Astbury, the Tigers' defence has also been stingy. This is a massive game, on a big stage for both clubs on Anzac Day Eve. If Melbourne can cause an upset, it could go a long way to steering its season back on course.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Tuesday, April 24, 7.25pm
LAST FIVE MEETINGS
R5, 2017, Richmond 12.16 (88) d Melbourne 11.9 (75) at the MCG
R5, 2016, Melbourne 20.9 (129) d Richmond 14.12 (96) at the MCG
R4, 2015, Melbourne 12.11 (83) d Richmond 6.15 (51) at the MCG
R9, 2014, Melbourne 14.7 (91) d Richmond 9.20 (74) at the MCG
R8, 2013, Richmond 15.16 (106) d Melbourne 11.6 (72) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. Melbourne led by 20 points at three-quarter time against Richmond the last time the teams played before the Tigers kicked five goals to two behinds in the final quarter. Jack Riewoldt was the difference between the sides, kicking six goals.
2. The Demons have taken the ball inside 50 more times this season than any other side, with an average of 59.8. The Tigers aren't far behind in third, averaging 57 per game.
3. Richmond's win in 2017 was its first over Melbourne since early in 2013. The Demons won three consecutive matches in 2014-16.
4. Last weekend against Hawthorn the Demons kicked their lowest score under coach Simon Goodwin, 6.12 (48). It was also their heaviest loss under Goodwin.
5. No team has had more hit-outs this season than Melbourne, thanks to Max Gawn who is the top-ranked ruckman with 55 more than the next best player.
6. Richmond superstar Dustin Martin was the second-ranked player in the Schick AFL Player Ratings last weekend, scoring 27.7 points to edge him clear of Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield in the overall rankings.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …
After the heaviest loss of his coaching career at Melbourne, Simon Goodwin will be urging his players to respond against the Tigers. It starts at selection this week, with Goodwin likely to make a statement after a horror performance against the Hawks.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 16 points

One thing is for sure, our recent efforts against Melbourne have seen us kick poorly for goal.
If my maths is right, 56.79 in those 5 games listed (135 scoring shots at goal). Conversely, Melbourne have kicked 68.42 in those same games (110 scoring shots at goal).
So across those games, we have had 25 more scoring shots, but been outscored by a total of 35 points.
Not sure if that is significant, I just find it interesting.
-
Correct Slip. We owe this mob. Ripe for a 15 goal drubbing. Lets see us do it!

Not to mention Tom bugg is right up there as one of the biggest flogs in the afl and is always up to his floggiest best against us. Viney not playing but he’s right up there too.
Apart from the finals and granny the Anzac Day eve game was my favourite win of last season.

Melbourne CEO Peter Jackson thanks fans for elevating Anzac eve clash to blockbuster status
Sam Landsberger
Herald Sun
April 19, 2018
MELBOURNE boss Peter Jackson says his club’s Anzac eve blockbuster against Richmond has transformed footy’s celebrations, with about 180,000 people expected to pack the MCG in the space of two days.
Jackson told the Herald Sun that after just four years the annual Dees-Tigers clash could be as big as Collingwood and Essendon’s longstanding marquee match.
Melbourne will pocket the entire gate revenue from Tuesday night’s encounter and Jackson said the Melbourne Cricket Club was expecting 85,000.
That would deliver the Demons their biggest home-and-away crowd since pulling 86,664 in their 1964 premiership season.
“Rather than compare the games I think it’s better to say how fantastic is it that AFL football can have 180,000 people potentially turn up within 15 or 16 hours,” Jackson told the Herald Sun.
“When else does that happen? It’s just fantastic. I’ve got to thank Richmond supporters for it — they elevated it last year to the next level.”
Last year’s crowd of 85,657 clapped loudly as the attendance was displayed on the MCG screen. The first two Anzac eve fixtures drew 59,968 (2016) and 58,175 (2015).
Melbourne midfielder Angus Brayshaw’s brother Will Brayshaw, an Australian army lieutenant, is set to fly in from Afghanistan to speak at the chairman’s function.
While the Pies and Bombers honour past war heroes, the Dees and Tigers acknowledge those currently serving.
Private Gregory Sher’s family will light the cauldron on Tuesday night and 20 current service men and women are set to be honoured at the MCG.
Private Sher was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.
“I hope this becomes as big as Anzac Day,” Jackson said.
“It’s not far away now, is it? If you get 85,000 that’s pretty good. It is a great example of what can happen if two clubs get together and build something.”
Jackson was unsure how much cash the Demons would make.
“I’ve never seen a game this big (at Melbourne) so I don’t really know what happens,” the chief executive said.
“Last year people had to take a risk. Channel 7 had to take a risk (and) the AFL had to take a risk to actually fixture a game on a Monday night.
“To be honest they were both a little bit shaky about that. But both clubs were very strong about this — if this is going to be an authentic Anzac eve night game you’ve just got to deal with the risk of a Monday night and go for it.
“Now it’s locked in and it’s a great result.”
Jackson urged supporters to pre-purchase a reserved seat.

I think its well worth the conservation.
Melbourne play a real poo and dirty style of football against us, reminds me of poo hitting the inside lip of the toilet bowl and not sliding even with a flush, anyhow there must be some frustation and pressure that Melbourne put the players under in order for them to miss. Out of the 22 games each year playing the dees is one that I dont look forward to as its always a frustrating affair to watch and I'm sure the players feel that negative vibe too

EEA, sounds like Melbourne are planning for more of the same negative and frustrating 'tactics' against us ::).
With around 85,000 fans expected to flock to the MCG for the annual clash, Gawn said the players felt an extra spark ahead of the occasion given the clubs' fiery history.
"I've got a couple of melee fines in Richmond games dating back about five, six years,"
"It's a great game, upwards of about 85,000 fans this week we hope, so usually a few players can get a little bit tense for that sort of crowd and the occasion. I think it's relatively in good spirit though."
Gawn said it was incumbent on the more experienced players in the side to show more leadership on the field in those situations [opposition run-ons].
"Hopefully Richmond don't get a bit of a run-on, but if they do, there's a good chance for us to act on and show good learnings from this week."
The loss to the Hawks also raised questions over the Demons' mental toughness, a critical area of improvement if they are to be any chance of beating premiers Richmond next Tuesday at the annual Anzac Day Eve clash.

Melbourne will lift no doubt ....but at least you can expect a reliable effort from the Tigers . We will be hard to beat . We will tackle and apply enormous defensive pressure. You know Jacob Townsend will give it to Lever .
Melbourne's best is very good - but they always give the opposition a window of opportunity.

Talking of Lever, early days but the Crows must be smiling about this one. Doedee has been more than useful for them, and Lever is struggling at Melbourne.
They just keep finding them. Wells gets all the plaudits as a recruiter, I'd take the Crows guy every day of the week.

Will be level on points with the eagles who have 3% on us however will depend on the margin as we could potentially win and still go down from our current %.

Tigers bracing for fired-up Demons
Trent Masenhelder
afl.com.au
Apr 22, 2018 8:26PM
RICHMOND is bracing for Melbourne to come out breathing fire in Tuesday night's Anzac Day Eve blockbuster at the MCG.
A day after the Tigers chalked up their third victory of the season in round four, the Demons were humiliated by Hawthorn in a match many thought they would win.
Melbourne conceded 15 goals to one after quarter-time and failed to register a major in the second and third quarters in a demoralising 67-point defeat that has seen them under the blowtorch since.
Grimes knows the Demons will be determined to restore their pride.
"Melbourne has played good footy over the past two weeks, they were right in the game at half-time of the Hawthorn match," Grimes said.
"We know that they're a contested-ball beast and they win the ball in their midfield and get it going forward.
"They certainly pose a huge challenge for us. They're going to come out absolutely firing.
"The challenge for us is to bring the heat early and try and bring our brand, which is the Richmond pressure and contested ball. Hopefully that holds up under their pressure."
Grimes said Melbourne's forward line poses a serious threat to Richmond's ultra-consistent defence.
Jesse Hogan has 10 goals to his name for Melbourne in 2018, Jeff Garlett has eight and Den Kent has six in just two games.
"Melbourne's offence is certainly their weapon, so too is their contested ball," Grimes explained.
"We know that if we’re not one hundred per cent on defensively and team defensively, not just the backs seven, we’re going to have a really, tough challenging game trying to score from our back half, which isn’t how we like to play."
Grimes is expecting to spend some time on the dangerous Garlett.
"He has been in electric form, he’s been dynamic. The thing about 'Jeffy' is with three or four opportunities a game he can kick that many goals," said Grimes.

Out of the 22 games each year playing the dees is one that I dont look forward to as its always a frustrating affair to watch and I'm sure the players feel that negative vibe too
Well worth the conversation as well.
:lol
Up to your old tricks eh, no worries. I'll keep a lookput for your pooposts and ride them like Zorro :shh
lookput?
Sorry my wife's 60th birthday today. Too many bubbles in my wine.

What was that kick, Cotch? Stuffed up a goal chance.

Houli on a HFF lobs it to 30m out and Jack takes another contested mark. Goes around the body instead of the drop punt and hits the post.

Struth our entry into our FWD 50 is woeful
Blazing away

Can we actually hit an open target and not kick it between teammates? :scream

Brayshaw soft on the wing and Butler gets it to Georgie who finds Townsend 35m out. A rare miss :o.

I'm at ground level. Very greasy conditions.

In a low scoring match, the Tigers have extended their lead out to 20 points at the main break. The Tigers were dominant that quarter with 19 to 5 inside 50s, nine to two scoring shots, 14 to eight clearances, and 92 to 72 disposals.

That centre bounce ended up inside the circle?! :huh. Gave Nank no chance.
Melbourne first goal of the 3rd.

Why did Grimes punch?
Easy mark for the taking

Front and square at the contest, Tiges :banghead,

How do you allow Melksham to take a contested pack mark :huh.
-
Another really poor kick by Cotchin, poor it was akick in hope
Slow out of the blocks this quarter
-
Clear mark to Astbury inside the playing field. Why review it : huh3.
-
Am I allowed to say it?
That was pathetic Tiges
We've gifted them back into the game
-
Terrible. Melbourne just kept the ball moving forward and we didn't protect the defensive side.
38 - 30
-
We're off this qtr. Not manning up.
-
Wake up idiots
-
Phew! Thank gawd for Rance.
38 - 31

Richmond 2.2 5.8 8.9-57
Melbourne 1.5 2.6 5.8-38
Goals: Higgins 3, Lloyd 2, Riewoldt, Castagna, Prestia.
A quarter of two halves. Melbourne won the contested footy and dominated inside 50s in the first 10-15 mins and got it back to six points before we woke up and restored the 3 goal lead. Once again had chances in the last 10 mins to be further ahead but stuffed up many of them :scream. Pinball error-ridden play-on footy.
-
Poor by Sheds there. Can't hesistate. Just needed to bomb it as long as he could when under pressure deep in defence.

Half-hearted there by Towner with the one-arm attempt. I don't think he thought he had a chance initially.

Fortunately the demon set shot is OOTF (point post).
We go coast to coast. Long towards Dusty. It spills. Lamberts toe poke goes behind the stick.

Thought we were quite relaxed about it tonight. Same vs Carlton and Hawks. Just doing what needs to be done to get the points.
Turned it on for one quarter and put them away. Otherwise another week with no injuries etc. Just cruising...

Good win. Melbourne FC needs to do better in terms of delivering there crowd. I thought 77k was poor for the night and its Melbourne's fault 100% other than that it is a great night and it was a good result for us. I still think we have a lot of improvement left so that augurs well for us later on.
-
Great win and especially good to see the Tigers did not at any stage hold back when the game was in the bag. Took the last qtr on by the scruff of the neck and smashed them in every area of the game.
:clapping :thumbsup :gotigers

I am a little concerned that we and the media are getting ahead of ourselves here.
Melbourne are woeful at the moment.
Yep, our defence reigned supreme, but seriously, they were up against a forward line that lacked any cohesion or reasonable set-up.
Their midfield played in spurts, and there defence looked totally panicked all night. Max Gawn was the only Melbourne player who had a red hot crack IMO.
I know you can only play the team out there against you, but even still, this was a game which nothing much could be taken out of except the 4 points and no injuries.
-
Like everyone I love Nank. However, he is getting toasted in the hitouts. Gawn destroyed him last night and next week he has Grundy to contend with. Gawn's delivery to Melbourne's mids last night was amazing but became ineffective because they have no speed on the outside. The Pies do have speed on the outside so to me this poses a big concern for next week....
-
Crowd is 77k.
Melbourne home game so no doubt they couldn't fill their sections.
Really disappointing crowd. I went to buy tickets but could only find expensive seats behind the goals and had bern informed there wouldnt be any GA so couldnt be stuffed going.

Gawn is the best ruckman in the game and we still beat them in clearances.
-
Sitting up in the nosebleeds I thought we looked a bit unpolished for the most part but then cranked it on in the 4th. Toby was struggling to match Gawn but that's to be expected for a young and developing ruckman. He could really use a chop out next week against Grundy who I think is the best ruckman going around at the moment.

Really not telling the difference while we are all singing it (probably terribly) but hey wtf .....
-
Nearly all of Melbourne's goals came from some rushed kick into the forward 50.
They were terrible and I couldn't believe they were still in the game at the start of the 4th.

All clear from the MRP except for Edwards copping a fine.
MRP Charges Laid:
Shane Edwards, Richmond, has been charged with engaging in rough conduct against Neville Jetta, Melbourne, during the second quarter of the Round Five match between Richmond and Melbourne, played at the MCG on Saturday April 21, 2018.
In summary, he can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.
Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with low impact to the head. The incident was classified as a $3000 sanction. The player can accept a $2000 sanction without appearing before the Tribunal.

Haha apparently Melbourne supporters have been calling into SEN and saying that they shouldn't have traded Watts....
-
Hitouts are over rated. Nank holds his own around the ground against most if not all ruckmen. Big challenge against the best big man in the comp this week
-
We should be fairly confident that at least Nankervis will remember to pick up Grundy and also won't run past the ball if there's a contest in front of goal in Collingwood's forward 50 with us less than a kick in front at the death... :shh
