With tonight's win, we have won 11 games straight at the MCG

We've equaled our best run of wins at the 'G. We also won 11 straight from R11, 1974 to R10, 1975.

If we beat Collingwood then it'll be our best ever winning streak at the M.C.G.

Melbourne won 17 straight at the 'G in their 50s heyday: R2, 1954 to R13, 1956.

The Dees also went 18 games undefeated (11 wins + a draw + 6 wins) from 1959 to 1960.

In modern times, Essendon won 13 straight at the 'G: R2, 2000 to R1, 2001.

Brave Richmond does it again at the home of football
This was as spirited as St Kilda has been this season, perhaps helped by an accurate performance in front of goal, but it wasn't able to overcome a Tigers outfit with just two on the bench for the entire second half. Their ability to run the game out and dominate play when the match was up for grabs in the final term was incredibly impressive, although the Saints also finished the game with Jack Newnes and Brandon White spending plenty of time off the field.

The victory took Richmond's winning streak at the MCG to 14 games, extending a club record, and the result emphasised how hard it is to overcome the reigning premiers at the venue that hosts the Grand Final.

Results from 2017-18 reveal Richmond has biggest home-ground advantage in the AFL

Al Paton,
Herald Sun
1 June 2018, 4:00pm

FORGET the Gabbatoir and the House of Pain. Travelling to the MCG to play Richmond is now the toughest road trip in footy.

Richmond hasn’t lost at the MCG for almost 12 months, with the Tigers’ winning streak now a club-record 14 games — including three finals (the Round 5 win against Collingwood eclipsed the previous best streak of 11 set by Tom Hafey’s powerhouse team in 1974-75).

A ladder of results at every team’s home venue since the start of 2017 has the Tigers clear on top with a 90 per cent winning rate.

Putting the “G” in Tigers, Richmond has lost just two of 21 games at the MCG in that time (none this year) and one was a David Mundy goal after the siren and the other a late Sydney surge away from claiming the points in both of those.

Geelong and West Coast have the next biggest home-ground advantages, but both have suffered upset losses at home this season.

Adelaide has surprisingly lost five games at Adelaide Oval since the start of 2017 (including this year’s Showdown to cotenant Port Adelaide) and Sydney’s strike rate at the SCG is just 58 per cent.

Melbourne is on the rise but has won just one of its four MCG games this year, while Collingwood’s 6-14 win-loss record at the home of footy could be cause for concern with eight games to come there this season, starting with Fremantle on Sunday afternoon.

Analyst David King said the Tigers’ success at the MCG all came down to how they defend the ground.

“There’s a science to how they defend. Nothing is random,” he said.

“They’re a really well organised machine.

“The key to their defence is they defend inside-out — they force you wide. They don’t allow you to switch then you kick the ball to Rance, Astbury and Vlastuin and they win it back.”

King said it was a misconception that the MCG is wider than other grounds, but it was “fatter” around the half-forward or halfback flanks.

“You can switch out of the backline at Etihad Stadium in one-and-a-half kicks. At the MCG it might take three kicks.”

Familiarity with the ground means Richmond players know exactly where to position themselves to defend those kicks, forcing teams to move the ball slower and in straight lines, in effect funnelling opposition attacking moves to star interceptors like Rance.

Richmond’s game plan is tailored to the G:

— The average score at the MCG this year is 85 points. The average score against Richmond there is 66.

— The Tigers average 81 intercepts and 32 forward-half intercepts per game at the MCG, up on the AFL averages of 73 and 25.

— Richmond averages two goals per game more than any other team at the MCG from forward-half turnovers.

One other number from the table also stood out to King — Richmond plays at its home ground more than anyone else. And that also happens to be the venue for Melbourne finals, including the Grand Final.

“Twenty-one games is a lot. Look at other teams they might play in finals — West Coast plays there once (before finals this year), Port Adelaide twice, Geelong seven times, Sydney twice. It is a huge advantage.”

They've had about 5 naming right changes for Kardinia Park over the past 20 years: Shell, Baytec, Skilled, Simonds and now GMHBA.  I'm glad we've at least kept "Punt Rd" with our naming rights deal so it's the Swinburne Centre @ Punt Rd Oval.

Apparently our average winning margin over those 15 consecutive wins is 41 points.

----------------------------------

'G, what a record

Richmond's love affair with the MCG continued with its 15th consecutive win as it close in on a 52-year record at the ground. The Tigers now sit two matches behind Melbourne's run of 17 straight wins at the home of football between round two 1955 and round 13 1956. If Tigers fans weren't excited enough at the 9-2 ledger, they'll be pleased to know the Demons' streak started in the same year they kick started a three-peat. To trump the Demons, Richmond will need to beat Geelong (R13), Adelaide (R16) and Collingwood (R19).

The numbers behind Richmond’s MCG winning record

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
1 Aug 2018

On Saturday, Richmond broke the record for the most consecutive matches won at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

A hard-fought contest against traditional rivals Collingwood in Round 19 ended with a 28-point win to make it 18-straight at the MCG.

Since the last time the Tigers lost at the MCG – to Sydney on June 17, 2017 – they have strung together an unprecedented amount of victories on the hallowed turf to bypass the previous record set by Melbourne in 1955 and 1956.

Included in that winning streak, of course, was the small matter of breaking a 37-year premiership drought by toppling Adelaide at headquarters on that one day in September last year.

To give a little more insight into this remarkable feat, we’ve broken down the numbers to further highlight what the Tigers have achieved on top of the MCG turf over the past 12 or so months.

Consecutive wins: 18

Total for score: 1833

Average per game: 101.83
Scores of more than 100: 13
Scores of 80-100: 4
Average winning margin: 41.11

Total against score: 1093
Average per game: 60.72
Scores conceded of more than 100: 0
Scores conceded of more than 90: 1
Scores conceded of 50-70: 7
Scores conceded of less than 50: 5

First quarter performance: 415 points for v 271 points against (+144 differential)
Second quarter performance: 394 v 222 (+172)
Third quarter performance: 421 v 306 (+115)
Fourth quarter performance: 603 v 294 (+309)

Dispelling a myth that Richmond are afforded more games at the ‘G than their contemporaries, we’ve also put things into perspective.

Fellow MCG tenants Collingwood have played 18 matches at the ground since Richmond’s 18-match winning streak at the venue commenced.

Co-tenants Melbourne have played there 14 times (plus three home games in Darwin) and Hawthorn have had 11 matches at the home of Victorian footy (plus six home games in Tasmania).

Carlton have played there 12 times along with five games at their other home ground, Etihad Stadium.

Many have said it’s been easy for the Tigers at the MCG because they play ‘away’ games at the venue, but regardless of that opinion, they’ve been able to accomplish what no other side has in 62 years.

The Tigers will be looking to extend their MCG record to 19 wins when they face a Geelong side intent on exacting revenge this Friday night.

The next record to knock off is the all-time consecutive wins at any venue.

Our current streak is 8th which isn't our best ever either. We won 24 straight games back in the 1930s at Punt Rd.

29 wins - Geelong @ Kardinia Park, R3 2008 to R20 2011
24 wins - Richmond @ Punt Rd, R11 1932 to R4 1935
            - Sth Melb @ Lake Oval, R8 1934 to R17 1936
21 wins - Carlton @ Princes Park, R22 1993 to R7 1996
20 wins - Coll'wood @ Victoria Park, R16 1969 to R17 1971
            - West Coast @ Subiaco Oval, R8 2004 to R20 2005
19 wins - Hawthorn @ York Park, R8 2012 to R19 2016
18 wins - Richmond @ M.C.G, R14 2017 onwards
            - Brisbane @ Gabba, R10 2001 to R13 2002
            - Essendon @ Windy Hill, R9 1984 to R8 1986
            - St Kilda @ Docklands, R13 2008 to R17 2009

Good enough to win, but good enough to beat the MCG?

Peter Ryan
The Age
26 Aug 2018

By the end of his dual premiership career, West Coast premiership player Guy McKenna greeted the MCG like a long-lost brother.

But the first few times he played at the home of football, he trod warily around the home of football, treating the venue like it was the scary big kid who lived next door.

He remembered the crowd heaving and the relentless pressure that created for the visitors as the Eagles took time to build a team capable of winning at the MCG.

By 1992, the team was assembled and the Eagles won their five games at the venue that season on their way to a famous premiership.

Before that season they had won two of their 11 games at the place where the grand final will be decided for the next 40 years.

That's a similar record to the one the Giants hold now with just two wins in 13 attempts at the MCG.

"It's a foreign environment," McKenna told Fairfax Media.

"As a young fella when you first step out at the MCG it is just like another player. It's like your big brother is staring down at you.

"Even 30,000 Melbourne supporters could create a roar that could shake you to the bone.

"It's not until you get older that you learn to block it out and you get in the moment better."

Such is the mystique of the ground that it is looming once again as a huge factor in deciding which team wins the flag.

Richmond seem as unbeatable as Winx at the MCG, having now stretched their winning streak to 21 at the ground.

But the Tigers aren't the only team unbeaten at the MCG this season.

West Coast and Sydney will also enter this year's finals series without having lost at the grand final venue in 2018.

Admittedly those three non-Victorian teams have won just five out of five at the MCG in 2018, which, even though four of the wins have been against finals opponents, pales into insignificance when compared to the top-of-the-table Tigers' run.

But that trio of non-Victorian teams need to look to any positive they can find, because in 2018, with the four MCG co-tenants, Richmond, Collingwood, Hawthorn and Melbourne, part of the same finals series for the first time, the venue looms as a huge factor.

Recent history suggests the MCG – which was locked in as the grand final venue for the next 40 years earlier this year – should give those Victorian teams an advantage if they meet a non-Victorian team in a grand final.

The past five premiers have been Victorian-based and defeated non-Victorian teams on the big day.
Sydney's 2012 premiership team is the only non-Victorian team since 2003 to defeat a Victorian team on grand final day.

Such is the lack of exposure to the MCG in finals for some of those teams that the Swans of 2016 were the only non-Victorian team since 2006 to play at the MCG in the lead-up to the grand final.

No wonder clubs from outside Victorian were a little concerned at the decision to lock the MCG in as the home of the grand final for the next generation and beyond.

The interesting point McKenna made, however, was that it wasn't so much the ground's dimensions that caused the issue but the overwhelming sense he had early in his career that he was intruding on someone else's space.

"I have no doubt there is an advantage for the Melbourne sides that play there a lot who understand the nuances of the oval, but it's probably the other side of the fence that matters more," McKenna said.

"The green grass is all well and good but it is just atmosphere that the crowd brings that can unnerve a young player."

The other possibility is that the presence of the MCG co-tenants this season may mitigate the Tigers' MCG advantage to some extent.

Somehow, until now, the quartet of Victorian clubs with 51 premierships between them have rarely crossed paths September for most of their storied history.

But now they have all arrived at the same time with the same intent.

Collingwood and Hawthorn both have positive win-loss records at their home venue this season while Melbourne's sits at just under 50 per cent.

Geelong, who play home games at GMHBA Stadium, struggle to win at the MCG having won two of their seven starts on the track in 2018 and six of their 12 finals there under Chris Scott but they pushed the Tigers to three points in round 20 and Scott says the venue holds no fears.

However, it's worth noting no premier in the past decade has won the premiership having a worse record at the MCG in their flag-winning season than both Geelong and Melbourne have this season.

Most of all, no team has beaten Richmond, who face the prospect of meeting Hawthorn for the first time in their history in a final and the Demons for the first time in a final since 1940.

That's the reality facing the seven remaining teams. Can they defeat the Tigers in their own backyard when it matters most?

By the time McKenna went back to his second grand final in 1994, the MCG held no fears.

"It is a not a habit but you are comfortable once you have won," McKenna said.

"When you step back out there it is like a long-lost brother you can go up and hug, whereas when you haven't played there it's like the big brother from next door where you go, 'hang on'."

That sentiment hasn't changed much. In 2018, the MCG is a factor that can't be denied.

Playing at the MCG during September should hold little fears for this year's three interstate finalists based upon their collective form at the venue during the home-and-away season.

It's a small sample size, but only Greater Western Sydney has been beaten at the home of football, with both West Coast and Sydney finishing the premiership season with an unblemished record at the venue.

West Coast

Played: 2
Won: 2
Lost: 0

Wins: Defeated Carlton by 10 points in round five; defeated Collingwood by 35 points in round 17

Greater Western Sydney

Played: 2
Won: 1
Lost: 1

Win: Defeated Collingwood by 16 points in round two
Loss: Defeated by Melbourne by 45 points in round 23

Sydney

Played: 2
Won: 2
Lost: 0

Wins: Defeated Hawthorn by eight points in round eight; defeated Melbourne by nine points in round 21.
