Daisy Pearce highlights a reason why Richmond Tigers blow teams away
By SEN
27 April 2018
Melbourne AFLW star Daisy Pearce has identified a game changing trend in Damien Hardwick’s coaching.
With rotation patterns at an all-time high in terms of diligence and planning, superstar players are often left off the ground at critical stages, as seen with Greater Western Sydney’s Dylan Shiel in last weekend’s draw with St Kilda.
However, Pearce says Richmond implements a different technique, which helps them have their best players on the field when they’re needed most.
“The thing I like about the Tigers is the way Hardwick manages the minutes,” she told SEN Breakfast.
“We wonder why they’re just able to blow teams away in periods of the game, and often late in the game. It’s the way they manage the interchange.
“Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin don’t spent as much time on the ground early in the game as what other midfielders do. By three quarter time on Tuesday night, those guys had spent 10-15 minutes less on the field than any other one of Melbourne’s midfielders.
“They do it week in, week out. Already those guys have played about 50-60 minutes less than any other top line midfielders in the competition.
“Then bang, last quarter, inject them in and they have a huge impact.”
The Tigers will look to strength their grip on top spot this Sunday at the MCG against Collingwood.

Was a good insight, there's no doubt I feel pretty good about our chances when we are close to a team in a low scoring game at 3 qtr time that we will draw clear in the last qtr - qtr and a half

Not sure it's the real reason. All our key players against the Demons had significant time on the bench and most only played 75-80% of game time. I felt last season we had a huge fitness advantage over most teams and that's why we could run out games and quarters better. We are a fast team and are still going pretty fast at the end of the game. We also move it quickly by hand and foot and the opposition do a poo load of running to catch us.
-
I also believe that it takes time to get into the oppositions head that they are going to be rushed or hit. The more they feel it the more they expect it. They then start to rush or fumble even when they probably have time. The effect of this is felt more as the game goes on and eventually they crack late in the game. The trend has been the same in most games over late 2017 and 2018.
The reason could be a combination of the factors that have been mentioned before and my reasons but what ever it is its working. Its good that the title of the article says "a reason" and not "the reason"

I think it's the out of bounds rule and we have a list with better endurance. Teams are still adjusting their lists to the requirement for more endurance because the ball stays in play a lot more.

I think the other teams just have to get a bit fitter.
