Deja vu to last season, we get smashed by Adelaide and then have a number of close losses. WC will be hard to beat over there as we are showing signs of a tired side. We then have games against the Saints and Bombers which on current form we win. Before the bye we have Port and the Cats, being premiers and the hunted we seem to have one mini grand final after another, feel we are quite vulnerable at the moment so could easily lose 3 of the next 5.

Can't see this being a close game.  We either rise to the challenge of top of the table clash and blow them away (ala 2017 finals form) or the trip, rabid crowd and a team that has been up for a while could mean we struggle (ala Adelaide Oval in 2017).

Yep, the West Australian media are pumping this up as bigger than their local derby.

If this isn’t the biggest home-and-away game at the new stadium this year, then one or both of the WA clubs are in for big seasons. West Coast look headed that way anyway.

This is first versus second. The Eagles have won their past seven after a round-one loss to Sydney, the Tigers have won their past six after a round-two loss to Adelaide in Adelaide.

If they beat reigning premiers Richmond in a mouth-watering round-nine clash at Optus Stadium on Sunday, the sky is the limit for Adam Simpson’s side.

Match preview: West Coast v Richmond

May 14, 2018

SUMMARY

The Eagles are making a mockery of gloomy pre-season predictions and if Adam Simpson's men aren't already considered serious contenders in 2018 they have another opportunity to prove it when reigning premier Richmond comes to town for a blockbuster top-of-the-table clash. West Coast comfortably accounted for the Giants in another valuable road win last round, and returns to the club's Optus Stadium fortress searching for eight consecutive victories for the first time since 2005. West Coast will be bolstered by Nic Naitanui's return from suspension and could regain Jeremy McGovern (calf). In-form forward Jack Darling (22 goals), Josh Kennedy (15) and Mark LeCras (15) pose a threat to the Tigers, but Richmond's small and quick forward line – ranked No.1 for scoring - will worry the Eagles. Superstar Dustin Martin is coming off just 16 touches thanks to Ben Jacobs' close-checking in Richmond's tense sixth-straight win over North Melbourne but he torched West Coast last season and how the Eagles counter the Brownlow medallist will be a major talking point.

WHERE AND WHEN: Optus Stadium, Sunday, May 20, 2.40pm AWST

LAST FIVE TIMES
R3, 2017, Richmond 11.10 (76) d West Coast 8.17 (65) at the MCG
R4, 2016, West Coast 18.17 (125) d Richmond 9.3 (57) at Subiaco Oval
R12, 2015, West Coast 13.12 (90) d Richmond 10.10 (70) at the MCG
R18, 2014, Richmond 8.11 (59) d West Coast 6.6 (42) at Subiaco Oval
R10, 2013, Richmond 16.7 (103) d West Coast 8.14 (62) at Subiaco Oval

THE SIX POINTS

1. Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin dominated in round three last season at the MCG, racking up 40 disposals, 33 of which were kicks, nine inside 50s, 15 clearances and two goals.

2. This will be a contest between the AFL's highest scoring sides. Richmond is averaging 102 points, while West Coast is narrowly behind at 99 points per game.

3. How the Tigers transfer their pressure game to fast-paced Optus Stadium will be intriguing to watch. Richmond is conceding only 68 points this year (AFL No.1), while West Coast is coughing up a goal extra per game (AFL No.5).

4. West Coast's round one loss to Sydney is the only time an interstate side has won at Optus Stadium. However, Richmond’s recent record in Perth is impressive, winning on five of the last six trips west.

5. Richmond's rampant final quarters (+129 points this season) have been well-publicised but the Tigers are also the League's best first quarter team (+82). The Eagles have owned second terms, up by an AFL-high 129 points across the first eight rounds.

6. Reigning West Coast club champion Elliot Yeo has climbed to a career-high 45th in the Schick AFL Player Ratings – rising 35 spots this season – and could be handed the tough job keeping an eye on the game's No.1 player Martin.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …

There are tantalising match-ups all over the ground but the AFL's best key defender Alex Rance and sidekick David Astbury have massive jobs ahead clamping down on star Eagles forwards Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy this Sunday.

PREDICTION: West Coast by seven points

The Tigers will travel to Perth on Saturday and are scheduled to train at Optus Stadium that afternoon, after a three-week ban on teams training at the new ground.

Stadium management said this week the reduced load on the surface had allowed it to improve after criticism of its hardness in the opening month of the season.

The hype surrounding Sunday's blockbuster could result in a new record crowd for an AFL match in WA.

The current record stands at 56,521 for the round-six western derby, which was a Fremantle home game.

The capacity of Optus Stadium is around 60,000.

Nank, Castagna & Broad in serious doubt according to AFL site
Prestia also will miss again
Grigg ready to return

Soldo whould hold his own against Nic Nat and a great opportunity for him should he come in.

I am comfortable we can cover these players and I would definitely rest them if they aren't 100% fit.

Soldo has improved around the ground to and can take a grab and kick a goal.Any ruckman comes against Nick Nat will struggle around the ground it's about the support around him that counts.Chol is not a full-time ruckman either.

Chol will too easily get pushed off the ball, particularly at boundary throw ins. I think Soldo can hold his own around the ground due to his sheer size and I'm hoping he jumps into Nic Nat at the centre bounces to neutralise the ball up or make him sore.

Don't really care about the  ruck contests-  overrated, we lose them most weeks anyway and they'd be lost even if Nank was playing-  Soldo is a throwback - too cumbersome around the ground, ruckmen don't actually play on each other in general play that much these days and at least Chol has agility, decent pace for his size and can also play as a genuine forward.... :shh

The Eagles are boasting about them being able to double-teaming us in the ruck.

West Coast ruckman Nic Naitanui says he and cohort Scott Lycett will double-team Richmond’s Toby Nankervis and “work him over” in Sunday’s top-of-the-table blockbuster at Optus Stadium.

If all you need to do against Nic Nat is crash into him at stoppages then why are we concerned about him? The man is the best leaping ruckman of his generation. Maybe any generation. Can jump over anyone and has every ruck in the league covered in terms of leg speed and his ability to spread from the contest.

Nic Nats most dominate strength is hit outs to advantage. Particularly to Shuey who isn’t playing. He averages 10 touches at 66%.
So while he is cat like and spectacular, he doesn’t do it that much.
He averages 32 hit outs with those to advantage at roughly a third which is dangerously high.
He’s other weapon is tackling which is ferocious but I’m not sure we can do much about that.
We can nullify his presence in the ruck

Especially this week following his 1 week suspension as much as he said publicly he wont change his tackling style i think he might still have it in the back of his mind so might not be at his ferocious best

Sounds like the Eagles are worried about the hype because they've sent out the coach today to try to talk it down.

Compare that to us and Dimma going about our normal business unfussed and unfazed.

Richmond and West Coast battle a test of winning formula

Mark Duffield
West Australian
19 May 2018

In the AFL, as in physics, every elite action will eventually create an equal and opposite reaction.

The dominance of a great offensive team will eventually lead to the creation of a great defensive one and vice versa.

So tomorrow’s blockbuster between top side Richmond and second-placed home team West Coast at Optus Stadium is not just a test of 1 v 2, it is also a test of two very different theories on what produces a winning formula.

Footy fans survey: have your say for the chance to win a trip for two to the 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final. Take the ultimate footy survey.

When Richmond snared the 2017 flag, they did it with one key forward — Jack Riewoldt — and an army of small, quick tacklers.

Riewoldt, 193cm and one of the great contested marks in the competition, was not so much a marking target as a means of bringing the ball to the ground.

In his weekly appearance on Fox Footy, Riewoldt recently said he got more joy from a great contest than a great mark these days.

We would like to strap him into a lie detector to test that claim, but you get the point. The Tigers are small, quick and the best tackle-pressure team in the AFL. A loose ball hitting the ground is a nightmare for a side trying to defend them.

They are small on ball as well. Unless they depart from their tried and true formula to play back-up ruckman Ivan Soldo, Toby Nankervis will take on Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett virtually on his own.

Teams often copy reigning premiers, which made people nervous about the future of ruckmen and tall forwards.

West Coast represent the reaction to Richmond’s action and are proof that you make the most of what you have got, rather than follow successful trends.

The Eagles will play two ruckmen against the Tigers and two marking forwards — Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy.

And just as Richmond’s ability to win with an army of crumbers and a midfielder playing second ruck was a key to their 2017 success, West Coast’s ruck ascendancy and the form of their tall forwards — Darling in particular — have been key to their strong start to the season.

Here are the key questions for coaches Adam Simpson and Damien Hardwick leading into tomorrow’s mouth-watering contest:

Question one: Does Simpson tag Dustin Martin and if so, who gets the job?

He has four options: Don’t tag at all or use one or more of Mark Hutchings, Jack Redden or Elliot Yeo.

Don’t be surprised if it is no one to start with. Simpson’s track record has been to see how the game is playing out before committing to a tag. In the round six western derby it took a monster Nat Fyfe first quarter to get Simpson to send Yeo to him.

It may also be that he has a different player in mind for Martin depending on where he is. Either Redden or Hutchings if he is midfield, but Yeo to take him if he goes forward.

North Melbourne’s Ben Jacobs successfully tagged Martin midfield for three quarters last Sunday, often playing him from behind to make it harder for Martin to “don’t-argue” him away. But Martin had an impact and a role in two vital goals when sent forward in the last term.

Fyfe went forward late in the derby, but Yeo was able to halve almost every contest. Simpson later observed there was no player in the AFL he would rather have to go with a player like Fyfe forward than Yeo.

Martin is different to Fyfe, more ground level than aerial, but Simpson would be happiest if Yeo is with him when he is forward.

Question two: Does Hardwick hold his nerve and play one ruckman or does Soldo have to play?

The second ruckman was named in the extended squad, but that is almost standard procedure for all clubs to guard against late injury or illness. On one hand, playing the second big man would be a departure from Richmond’s method, and no club has greater belief in its method than the Tigers right now.

On the other hand, no other club can throw two genuine ruckmen at you like West Coast. One of them, Naitanui, is a superstar who has declared the Eagles will set themselves to work Nankervis over. The other, Lycett, is no slouch and is in career-best form.

Recent evidence says taking one ruckman in against West Coast, even a good one, is risky.

Fremantle’s Aaron Sandilands won more hit-outs than any player on the ground in round six, but Naitanui and Lycett won the hit-outs 52-34 and the Eagles won the clearances 44-31. Port Adelaide’s Paddy Ryder was outgunned 56-26 in the air and the Power were dominated 45-31 around stoppages in round seven.

Finally, these are the two top teams this year for a reason, but equally they call it home-ground advantage for a reason. The Eagles have been beaten just once at Optus Stadium this year, and that was a credible performance given the stunning eight-goal haul from Sydney champion Lance Franklin.

Richmond have won their last 11 matches at the MCG and their last 12 in Victoria. But they have lost two of their past three on the road — against Geelong last year and against Adelaide by 36 points in round two this year.

So we can be as intrigued as we like about how this game will be played, but where it will be played is just as likely to be the decisive factor in the outcome.

My verdict: West Coast by 15 points

It should be a ripping game.

Adam Simpson is unimpressed by Premiership talk at this stage of the season for any team.

Reckon he'd rather keep a lid on things. Seen him a couple of times in the media during the week and I don't think he likes the hysteria.

West Coast Eagles captain Shannon Hurn shuns any talk of premiership tilt.

https://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/west-coast-eagles/west-coast-eagles-captain-shannon-hurn-shuns-any-talk-of-premiership-tilt-ng-b88841028z

------------------------------------------------

The Tigers clung to favouritism for the heavyweight bout yesterday, with the reigning premiers returning $1.87 and the Eagles $1.94 as the teams prepare to put their winning streaks on the line.

However money continues to come for the home side and TABtouch’s David Shortte predicted the teams could be locked at $1.90 each come bouncedown.

Currently fifth in premiership betting at $8.50, West Coast are expected to jump to equal second favourites for the flag at $7 if they win. Richmond are clear $3.75 premiership favourites with TABtouch.

Richmond premiership ruckman Toby Nankervis has shaken off a wrist problem and will lead the ruck against Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett.

Travelling emergency Shaun Grigg joined a 23-man squad for a light session in front of several hundred local Tigers fans at Optus Stadium late yesterday, where Nankervis trained freely.

It will be the first 1v2 showdown staged in Perth since West Coast upset Fremantle in the 42nd western derby at Subiaco Oval in round 20, 2015.

About 60,000 tickets have been sold and the Eagles believe there is a strong chance the crowd will beat the round six derby attendance of 56,521, which would set a new record for a WA football match. Today’s forecast is sunny with a top of 25C.

Richmond’s 22 includes 18 players from last year’s premiership triumph, while the Eagles welcome back Naitanui from suspension as well as Jeremy McGovern, Dom Sheed and Lewis Jetta from injury.

Hurn predicted the contested ball battle and the ability to be efficient in front of goal would be the decisive factors.

“I don’t think either side potentially will have any dominance in any area,” Hurn said.

“But it will just be making the most of your opportunities.”

Matty do yourself a favour and come and watch a real “Grand Final like” home and away game at the home of footy in front of a Tiger crowd.
That crap you will have to put up with today (crowd wise) is nothing like what it felt like last September.
It’s only a short (ish) flight away buddy.
Richmond v Collingwood home game on a Saturday afternoon at The G in 69 days would be a good start if the Pies can keep up their current form.

Five key questions: Eagles v Tigers

Travis King
afl.com.au
May 20, 2018

TOP SPOT will be at stake when the AFL's form teams West Coast and Richmond clash in an Optus Stadium blockbuster to close out round nine.

The Tigers head west brimming with confidence after a six-game winning streak, which has cemented the reigning premiers' standing as the team to beat in 2018.

But the Eagles have put together a seven-match unbeaten run and, against all expectations, are being touted as a premiership threat.

Can West Coast prove its flag credentials, or will Richmond deliver a reality check?

AFL.com.au has delved into the five key questions ahead of Sunday's showdown.

Is West Coast the real deal?

If the Eagles knock over Richmond it will be difficult to deny Adam Simpson's outfit is a genuine contender. The Eagles have answered every challenge since going down to the Swans in round one, defeating finals hopefuls Geelong, Port Adelaide and Greater Western Sydney along the way. There is obviously a long way to go in 2018, but West Coast boasts arguably the AFL's greatest home ground advantage, a potent forward line (AFL No.2 points for), experienced defence (No.5 points against) and dominant ruck combination (No.1 hit-outs). There is a youthful vibrancy about the new-look West Coast and, like Richmond before them, the second tier Eagles are playing roles to perfection to support their stars in a system that is stacking up so far.

Will the Eagles tag Dusty?
Ben Jacobs proved the Richmond superstar can be handcuffed last round, limiting Martin to just 16 touches as North Melbourne pushed the Tigers all the way in a 10-point loss at Etihad Stadium. Jacobs is probably the best tagger in the game, but the Eagles do have run-with specialist Mark Hutchings up their sleeve. Whether Hutchings has the power to go with the Brownlow medallist, especially when he pushes forward, is questionable, with Martin six centimetres taller and six kilograms heavier. Elliot Yeo shapes as the perfect match-up around clearances or one-out inside 50, and has done the job before keeping an eye on the AFL's elite, including Patrick Dangerfield and Nat Fyfe. Could Hutchings be better suited to a role on Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin after his stellar 37-disposal, one-goal game?

Should Alex Rance go to Jack Darling?
Damien Hardwick has some tough decisions to make. Darling is clearly the Eagles' in-form forward, showing hands of steel (AFL No.1 contested marks) and finishing off his work (third for goals with 22), but dual Coleman medallist Josh Kennedy (15 goals) is due for a big game and looms large as a match-winner. Lock-down defender David Astbury often goes to the opposition's most dangerous forward, leaving Rance to back himself to balance attack and defence in a supporting role, but which Eagle should Astbury pick up? At 195cm, he is also the tallest of Richmond's three key defenders, including Dylan Grimes, so Astbury might be needed when Scott Lycett and Nic Naitanui rest forward. How much impact the Eagles talls have will be pivotal to the outcome.

Will Richmond be exposed in the ruck?
Despite speculation he could be sidelined by a sore wrist, Richmond has named Toby Nankervis for the toughest ruck task in football against West Coast's tag-team Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett. The Eagles' combo has ignited a workmanlike midfield, and West Coast has boosted its clearance and contested ball numbers, while the Eagles are back dominating the territory battle. Interestingly, the Tigers haven't picked makeshift ruckman Shaun Grigg, so duties relieving in-form Nankervis could fall to Josh Caddy. Naitanui promised he and Lycett would try to work over whoever they face and, assuming Nankervis plays, the Richmond big man has a mammoth job ahead quelling their influence on the game.

Can the Tigers perform out of their MCG comfort zone?
Richmond has won a club record 13-straight games at the home of football and would take some beating at the 'G come finals, but Hardwick's men looked vulnerable at Etihad Stadium last Sunday and their only loss for the season was a six-goal defeat on the road to Adelaide in round two. The way Richmond (AFL No.1 for fewest points against) defends its wide home ground with frantic pressure and surges the ball forward at pace (AFL No.1 scoring) should be transferrable to the similarly-sized Optus Stadium, but the Tigers will be walking into as hostile an environment as they will encounter all year. No interstate team has won in Perth since round one, although Richmond had success at Subiaco Oval in recent years, winning five of the last six games.

Mick Malthouse unpacks the match-ups that will decide West Coast vs. Richmond

MICK MALTHOUSE,
Herald Sun
May 20, 2018

THEY come from opposite sides of the country and their game plans are an extreme contrast, but Richmond and West Coast are the current kings of the AFL jungle.

And I don’t see that changing.

My pre-season predictions had Richmond finishing the home-and-away season outside the top four, but still with a chance of a second consecutive premiership.

For West Coast, I thought the absence of Brownlow medallists Matt Priddis and Sam Mitchell would be too greatly felt. With the added uncertainty of how Nic Naitanui and Josh Kennedy returned from injury, I saw the Eagles missing the final eight in a rebuilding year.

I am happy to have been proven wrong on both counts.

Richmond has maintained its intensity and is perhaps playing even better football than last year, while West Coast displayed unified talent when it totally dismantled GWS last week.

Not much has changed for the Tigers since their premiership triumph. There have been few injuries, their game structure is virtually unaltered, and their hunger is ferocious. They have several superstars who are prepared to share the workload, and in this, there is a self-belief within the team in one another’s ability to impact the game.

The biggest change for the Eagles this season is their ability to win on the road. Several key players who had been found wanting in previous years when travelling have matured greatly. Jack Darling is one — he was outstanding last week. And Kennedy is getting better with every game back from injury.

The surprise packet is Mark LeCras, who at 32 I thought was on the cusp of being done, but is excelling.

Without three stars last week — Naitanui (unnecessarily suspended), Jeremy McGovern and Luke Shuey (both injured,) Tom Barrass, Scott Lycett and Jack Redden all stood up brilliantly.

The contrasting game plans will be intriguing.

Richmond is a totally different prospect compared to the Giants.

There’ll be no slow plays entering Richmond’s forward line. The Tigers move the ball deep and quick, with a lot of room to move inside the 50m arc.

Though small, Richmond’s forward line generates enormous pressure on the opposition backs, so Shannon Hurn will need to lead well. He is capable of that.

West Coast’s discipline has been its making this year. The Eagles’ forwards generally hold their ground and their backs don’t get sucked up into the play.

This should deny the Tigers an open forward line.

Toby Nankervis’s best-on-ground performance against in-form Magpie Brodie Grundy in Round 6 was one of the best ruck displays you’ll see. On Sunday the giant Tiger against Naitanui will be worth the admission price on its own.

Alex Rance and David Astbury on Kennedy and Darling, Barrass on Jack Riewoldt — the match-up potential of this clash is incredible.

But, as we all know, it’s the midfield battle that is most likely to determine the outcome.

Will Dustin Martin have two quiet games in a row? I doubt it.

Trent Cotchin, Nankervis and Kane Lambert are a match for any midfield against Andrew Gaff (an unbelievable supplier to his forwards), Naitanui and Redden. It will be a battle within a battle.

It is a test for West Coast against the reigning premier and a wonderful opportunity to find out where it needs to tinker its game plan — if at all — to get better.

How will young players Tom Cole, Willie Rioli and Jake Waterman handle the Tigers’ heat?

There is no such test for Richmond. It is already aware of exactly where it stands in the competition. On current form it will finish first or second, with the chance to play two MCG finals to progress to the Grand Final. I know that’s jumping the gun a bit, but that’s how much better the Tigers are playing than 16 other teams.

The Eagles should also be eyeing off two home finals. If they win today, then we’ll have found Richmond’s equal.

We’ve seen some tight contests this year, but whether they lived up to the billing of a great game is debatable. Today’s game will be spectacular.

It is only early days — Round 9 — but already there is a considerable divide in the league. Whoever wins this game will be footy’s monarch and it will be damn hard for anyone to catch them.

Jack Riewoldt finished the second quarter with four score involvements, a quarter-high, including two goals and one goal assist.

West Coast was unable to retain possession in the second quarter. After recording 48 effective kicks and 28 uncontested marks in the first quarter, it recorded just 23 effective kicks and second uncontested marks in the second.

The damage is being down in the midfield and across our HF line. Beaten badly both with and without the footy. Hard for our defenders when the ball is continually coming down under no pressure.

Frees this qtr: 8 - 1 plus two 50m penalites that resulted in goals.

Pathetic! Our worst quarter since the St Kilda game at Etihad. Came out not switched on while they've been on full cylinders. Even their shanks have found targets.

Jack gets one against the run of play.

Richmond      2.3    6.8     9.8-62
West Coast    6.1    7.2   14.6-90

Goals: Riewoldt 3, Short 2, Caddy, Edwards, Castagna, Conca.

Unfortunately no forward line other than Jack. Butler unsighted, Geogie not much better and flying for marks when he should stay down. Lloyd not up to it and Towno not getting involved. They have simple supremacy in the air and have the easy out everytime under pressure. Would be one of our greatest wins if we can threaten them in the last.

Bad loss today but we live to fight another day. St Kilda flogged us late last year and then we won the flag. What today has shown is that we need to go back and reset on the season. There are some players who shouldn't be in this side, maybe it would be a good idea to eventually go back to the 22 who won the flag last year and make changes as necessary from that point.

At least the pressure of being premiership favorites will go off us and on to the eagles, Hardwick, Caracella and co have a few months to work their magic. I think we would beat the Eagles at the MCG in September.

Eagles have been awesome today. There kicking has been first class. They’ve done to us what we normally do and that is harass and tackle hard. We had no easy kicks out there today and it shows.

Nic Nat is a machine. Too good today. Our midfield (besides the second term) has had their pants pulled down and our defence suffered terribly because of it.

We can't afford to have our mids and HFs having a shocker against sides with big forwards. In our two losses Jenkins kicked 5 and today Darling has 6. North tried it last week too but our mids did their job and we kept Ben Brown quiet.

Georgie misses.

Our defence has been disorganised and crap. Often they're not doing the simple things like just keeping their direct opponent in check. Even champions have off days so it's not the end of the world but when you can make Darling look like Tony Lockett, something is wrong.

Personally I think Rance needs to know when to go back to his 2015 or even 2016 playing style. i.e. defend first before being the play maker. its frustrating to see an the WCE forwards take so many easy marks inside their F50

Second halve we switched off.Our midfield didn't do it's job pressure snd tackling etc so much easy ball in defence, but defence was poor to.

Dimma kept faith in a few for me Lloyd is a vfl footballer and Grigg shouldn't have come straight in.I think we could have did better at the selection table bringing Soldo to help Nank and Menadue for more pace.Dimma needs to add a string to our game plan getting to predictable.Teams aren't zoning off us now going to the ball carrier.Still a few talls short to.

Garth is a KPP whereas Broad is 3rd/4th defender who plays on the opposition's more mobile linking tall who runs up to the wing and back (eg: Wood, Crows' Lynch).

Defence hasn't been great this year, but midfield didn't  help.
Blame is on our mids and HFs. Very soft today. Aside from the second qtr, there was no intensity nor tackling pressure. No defender can stop lace out deliveries into space under no pressure.

Hopefully today is a kick up the backside. Don't bring that intensity and tackling pressure over 4 qtrs against any side let alone a top side on their home deck then we'll get beaten.

There’s no reason to panic. Play this game at the G and it’s a different ball game too.

The eagles played an excellent game and didn’t allow any midfield dominance. Many of our boys were strangled and we had no answer for Nic Nat at all.

I think we need a break and recharge the batteries. Maybe the match committee could’ve done better with selection when playing so many games during the Anzac period.

Defence hasn't been great this year, but midfield didn't  help.

Need another tall - Moore /Chol in for Townsend

Menadue or Markov in for McIntosh

We have been up as a team for some time. This had to happen eventually, happened against Crows and then again against the Saints last season. We rebounded  bigger and better from both experiences.

Agree we need some fresh legs with Butler needing a rest and Lloyd just not quite up to the speed of our game. Maybe even Georgie needs a break as he didnt look fit to me. The Saints will be no easy beats and neither will the Bombers the following week so need to take both games very seriously.

most times i would agree, but watching the last half i would say a lot of those free kicks  were holding the ball and were there.

They wanted it and attached us like no other team has for a very long time.

That is 2 interstate games now we havent given a yelp.

But.....

Outside of Vlastuin & Short the rest of the back 6 were deplorable.

Rance- poor,

Astbury completed towelled up.

Houli - see he turned up in the fianl quarter.

Broad tried hard but when those around him are terrible, he's lost

Butler - can't defend him tonight, shocking.

Lloyd - showed today why he's a depth player only. Horrible

See people are bagging Nank. I thought he was great, yes he got beaten but gee he kept having a dip. Can't say that about alot of his team mates

Fuming with Cotchin who outside of having a shocker, to give away that 50 metre penalty when they had the momentum and gift them sofest of goals was disgraceful.

I could go on but cantbe stuffed, just want to get home

Has that even happened before? Would have bet the house on us losing the free kick differential but 1 free in the second half is ludicrous.

Cotchins miss in the second quarter also a momentum killer, should have nailed that one.

Agree that we were outplayed and in a lot of cases second to the ball but there were a few holding frees that i think they missed which WC received for very similar offences.

The thing is that even when we have dished out similar dominance over other teams we still on most occasions have lost the free kick count, as i understand we sit bottom of the free kick differential ladder so we must be doing something horribly wrong.

We made Robbo's 'dislikes' column:

4. RICHMOND

Maybe they were ripe for the picking, and West Coast may have built it up internally as a final in May, but it was the dismantling of Richmond which was of major concern. The Tigers conceded 130 points, were murdered on the turnover, they were unable stop West Coast’s ball movement from the back half to the front but actually had more inside 50s, 56-44. Richmond was the benchmark, that’s how powerful the Eagles were.

Defence was very very poor. Unorganised and just made poor decisions on marking, switches and coming off their man - darlings check side from the boundary which he completely messed up and fell in the lap of 2 eagles players unmarked 15 metres out directly in front come to mind. We actually had more inside 50 entries but the ease which they were scoring was crazy especially first and third quarters. The second quarter we absolutely dominated a lot more than in any of the other three quarters that the eagles won the difference being we only won the quarter by around 20 points whereas the eagles were able to put it on the scoreboard.

Think people are getting a fair bit carried away with the ruck was dominated stuff. We drew centre clearances and won stoppage clearances and I thought nank competed very well as usual. The area I thought Nic Nat was great in was his pressure, tackling and contested ball which I hardly think bringing in a second tall is going to counter. We have great depth in the vfl, drop players who are in poor form at the minute (I cannot understand how butler hasn’t been dropped yet) and bring in those who have earned their chance.

The coaches call on our players to lift when down on key pressure stats. They also rely on our leaders to be proactive and drive the team.

The second quarter we dominated but didn’t really capitalise from our dominance. So the third quarter thecoaches would have expected to keep pressing and possibly the west coast would also break as others have.

The difference is that when WC upped the ante we had nothing. Our midfield was smashed and when they won the ball were pressured. WC were clean with the footy and there was no real pressure on them so they could kick it lace out most times. Their forward line was very organised and our defence couldn’t stop them.

It was a bad day at the office. A couple of changes, some fresh legs from keen vfl players that have been banging down the door (ie. Miles) and we should be right after bye.

I see our midfield to many of them one paced players similar. That's for me were Menadue fits in this side. It's about time we develop Chol or Moore in our forward line give us another dimension we got till rd 22 to do it.

For me we a carrying are few passengers in our side shouldn't be the case as there is guys in our vfl performing Dimma having a bit to much faith.Towner,Conca,Macca,Lloyd and even Grigg and Butler to many.

Changes need to be made. Lloyd, Conca, Grigg cant be in the side together because they are slow. Butler has been disgraceful the past two weeks and he needs a spell in the twos.

Good reality check.

Can't win them all, the 2nd quarter was us at our best, the guys couldn't keep it up though.

Defence was very very poor.

Rance running at Sheed, then just takes off away from goals and lets Sheed waltz in to 50???

Our defenders have got to stop trying to intercept so much. Rance is the biggest culprit here. Whats happening is they are constantly off balance against quality ball movement  which is resulting in easy marks by the opposition or infringing and giving away dumb frees in defensive 50. Need to tone it down a touch and find the right balance between defending the man and coming off to support.

I know it sounds stupid given how well we're travelling but I have noticed how many easy goals we concede is disproportionate to our overall goals conceded.

Probably a loss we needed to have to reiterate that as good as we are, we cant rest on our laurels and need to keep striving to get better, otherwise sides will catch us

Lloyd, Conca, Butler and Grigg were terrible. Not sure if we'll drop all of them, actually you could bet we wont as thats not our way.
Hopefully Prestia is back very soon, I think Menadue, Markov, Miles and wombat deserve a run sooner rather than later.

Got in this mornign at 5.30

Just got up and watching the replay

The TV doesnt show how panicky our defence was in the for the 1st quarter

They were lost, disorganised and pointing fingers

And just on the stadium,  it's very good but it isn't the MCG

Bottom 6 looks exposed at quality opposition.
The defence had a shocker as a back 6 unit

We will bounce back next week.

our third quarters are still better than most in the competition.

Melbourne, Collingwood, Freo, North and now West Coast have all pulled our pants down in third quarters. Whatever we are doing at half time isn't working.

Momentum switches, big stuffing deal.  As long as you win the game it doesn't matter.

Do people think we are the only team in the competition who wants to win games?

Disagree. Third quarter against Freo poor, third quarter against North average and lost the game against the Eagles in the third quarter. Comparing our third quarters to other sides' third quarters is problematic and does not address the issue.

Went to the game, a great stadium but TBH, i found the atmosphere underwhelming.
Observations of the game:-
Our bottom 6 struggling to contribute in big time games. Towner concerns me greatly along with Butler. They seem to have lost their mojo.
Castagna was also ineffective but overall has had the better season.
Jack showed what a champion he was but we needed him to kick all those set shots.
It’s a ground that seems to suit KPF’s - 30 odd marks inside 50 was a very high number.
Grigg’s misses were momentum killers, especially in that first q.
The back 6 were HORRIBLE.
Their mids dominated but I’d say the disorganised way our back 6 played contributed to the leaking of goals. There was nothing amazing at their forward entries and their key forwards simply weren’t put under enough pressure.
For the first time, it looked like each of them were waiting for the other to step up.
Rance looked crook, Astbury had an absolute mare and Grimes wasn’t much better.
I thought Dusty and the Nank had a real crack in the midfield but were overwhelmed by the quality and depth in their midfield.
Watching Grigg, Caddy and even Dusty in the ruck was bordering on embarrassing yesterday.
That tactic won’t work and was actively exploited by the Eagles.

So, outplayed, out coached, out selected and generally taught a lesson in preparation for the game.

Do the talls actually have to have an impact or is the fact they are tall is enough?

Thinking more about the Eagles loss, ignoring the fact we were terrible aside from the 2nd qtr, there were at least some pros for later on in the season:

1. The premiership isn't decided in May and not in Perth (provided you avoid a PF there). You want to be peaking in August/September not now. The Eagles are flying now especially at home. Have they peaked too early? Remember we were 5-4 at this time last year after 4 straight losses (including 3 narrow ones).

2. The Eagles have shown their cards against us. We have shown a capacity in the past 18 months that we learn a lot from our losses and find countermeasures next time around to turn around the result. We won all 5 return meetings last year to sides we first up lost to.

3. Prestia was/is a big loss from our midfield. He's very underrated. Not only for his ballwinning ability inside but he frees up Cotch & Dusty. Hopefully he is back up and running when it matters  :pray (Same goes for Rioli's class up forward  :pray ).

4. We (wrongly) carried too many sore/underdone bodies last week. We've looked tired in the second half the past two weeks. The bye heading into the finals should have everyone as fresh as can be for September. It's doubtful also we'll have the same 22 running around as we continue to sort out our best 22 for 2018 (more than likely different from 2017).

Can add as a positive as well despite playing below par we were not thrashed and if we had been more accurate in the second quarter could have gone into the half time break ahead.

True but we did get comprehensively smashed in the guts and across HF after half-time. Coughing up 13 goals in a half to only our 6 is a beating  :P.
