Richmond-Geelong battle has some punch

Brent Read

The Richmond-Geelong match at the MCG next Sunday shapes as a critical juncture in the rivals premiership quests.

The reigning premiers will slip to third tomorrow should Melbourne defeat Collingwood, while the Cats would draw level with Richmond on wins if they manage to defeat the Tigers next Sunday.

With the top-placed Eagles and Sydney in strong form and well-positioned, the Victorian-based contenders face a task to not only clinch a top-four spot but also the home advantage come September.

Both Power Adelaide, who have a game in hand, and Collingwood could add to the logjam of top four contenders should they claim their next matches.

This adds a premium to next weekend’s match for both Richmond and Geelong heading into their mid-year bye.

And Geelong coach Chris Scott said he could not wait to challenge the Tigers as they seek a 16th straight win at the MCG.

“I read that it is impossible to beat Richmond at the MCG, so we’re going to have our work cut out,” he said.

“I think we will be giving ourselves a chance. They have been formidable there and people aren’t just making that up, the numbers reflect that as well.

“It’s a great challenge and we are really looking forward to it.”

The Tigers clash with four sides currently in the top eight in the last ten weeks of the home-away season as they seek to shore up their premiership defence and also have fixtures against last year’s runners-up Adelaide and the resurgent Giants.

Geelong have four matches against top eight placed teams in the run to September, along with clashes against the Crows and Hawthorn.

The Tigers, who ended a 13-match losing streak against the Cats in last year’s qualifying final, are likely to be strengthened by the return of Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin for the critical clash.

The star Tiger missed Friday night’s loss against Port Adelaide with a minor calf problem, instead flying to New Zealand to visit family.

Richmond will monitor the fitness of defender David Astbury, who appeared to suffer a serious ankle injury but was able to return to finish the match against Port Adelaide.

The Tigers will also assess the fitness and form of premiership forward Daniel Rioli, who yesterday played his fourth game back from ankle surgery in the VFL against Williamstown.

Geelong, too, have injury concerns stemming from the weekend, though the casualties are to support players rather than key prospects.

Former Kangaroo Aaron Black suffered a knee injury when he landed awkwardly after a marking contest, while Stewart Crameri was taken to hospital after being poked in the eye in the VFL.

Geelong, who bounded away from the Kangaroos in the latter stages on Saturday, also had a significant win in a VFL match that saw some key players gain match fitness.

Defensive midfielder Scott Selwood played his first match in five weeks after recovering from a back injury and is the selection mix against the Tigers.

Cam Guthrie returned from an ankle injury but is targeting a senior return after the bye, saying he needs to build further match fitness.

Key defender Lachie Henderson has not played since the Cats preliminary final loss last year due to an ankle problem and will also be given time to build match fitness.

While his presence is likely to boost the Cats, Geelong’s defence is the most miserly in the competition this year and has been faring well given the absence of Henderson and Harry Taylor.

With Gary Ablett finding his best form over the past fortnight, the Cats have enjoyed the luxury of playing Brownlow Medallist Patrick Dangerfield in the forward line.

But Scott said where Dangerfield played in coming weeks would depend on various factors including their opponents and the state of matches.

“We think he is a really difficult match-up _ I think that is obvious when he is deep forward — but there is no point having him standing in the goal square if the ball is at the other end,” Scott told Seven’s AFL Game Day.

“It is a bit of a assessment on how the game is going. Again, we do leave the ball in his court a little bit and if we really don’t like something, we intervene, but that rarely happens with those guys.”

This is almost a "top 4 or not" game. We're only just going at the moment, and we have a tough back nine ahead, especially if the Giants start coming good. I can only give us 5 definite ticks from here to round 23, which gives us 14 wins — enough to make finals but nowhere near top 4. And given our form away from home, we really need to finish top 2. Perhaps a pessimistic view but I can't believe that the Crows and Giants won't come good after the bye, making those tougher games than they look right now.

Dogs
Dons
Saints
Cats (1)
Suns
Crows at the g

That gets us to 15 wins same as last year then pinch a few more and we are top

1 more win to come from pies, cats and swans

16 wins is where I think we will end up👍

1998-2000. We actually won 3 in a row back then. The only time in the last 40 years.

R17 1998    Rich  10.7-67    def. Geel 8.10-58
R12 1999    Rich  15.11-101 def. Geel 9.12-66 .... Richo kicked 6.5 on Friday night TV prime time.
R8   2000    Rich  23.9-147   def. Geel 11.11-77 .... Matty Rogers kicked 5.

The record since was 1-20  :P until last year's Qualifying Final win  :wavetowel.

Geelong has been a force in the AFL for years but their record at the MCG has been a concern

Sam Edmund
Herald Sun
June 13, 2018

RICHMOND might be the kings of the MCG, but the home of football might also be Geelong’s Bermuda Triangle.

The Cats have lost more games than they’ve won at the MCG dating back to Round 22, 2014 (12-13). But at every other AFL venue in the same three-and-a-half year period, Chris Scott’s men are 42-18, with two draws.

Geelong is on a Sunday afternoon collision course with the Tigers on the MCG — a patch of grass Richmond has won a club-record 15 straight games on, including last year’s qualifying final mauling of the Cats.

Scott immediately stoked the fire for the clash after his side’s home win over North Melbourne, referencing Richmond’s streak with a sarcastic undertone.

“I read that it’s impossible to beat Richmond at the MCG, so we’re going to have our work cut out,” Scott said.

“I think we’ll be going in giving ourselves a chance, but they have been formidable there. People aren’t just making that up, the numbers reflect it as well. So it’s a great challenge and we’re really looking forward to it.

“We feel like we’re progressing and some areas of our game that needed to improve have improved.”

One of those areas is defence. Geelong’s ace up the sleeve is a new-found system that is choking the competition.

The Cats have allowed an average 54.8 points over their last nine matches — the fewest conceded by any team in a nine week period since 1990. They are on track to finish the season with the second-best defensive record in the last half a century, with an average score-against of 66.7 — behind only St Kilda’s 63.8 in 2009.

But will it hold up at a joint they’ve struggled at for nearly four seasons? And against the third-highest scoring team in the AFL after 12 rounds?

It’s the apparent clash of styles, as well as the contrasting MCG records, that is forming a fascinating pre-match script.

The foundation of Geelong’s stingy defence is its ability to guard against the turnover better than any other team. The Cats commit the second-fewest turnovers in the league and when they do cough it up, their defenders rigidly hold their position to concede an AFL-low 37.3 points from turnovers a week.

On Sunday the Cats come face-to-face with a Richmond side that force the most turnovers per week (82.8) and score the most from them — kicking nearly 70 points per game (No.1) directly from opposition mistakes.

So the Cats aren’t giving the ball up and the Tigers are forcing sides to give the ball up.

Something has to give.

“You’ve just got to respect how they play the game, Richmond,” defender Tom Stewart told the Cats website.

“They’re premiers for a reason … they are known to play well at the ‘G so we’ve just got to bring the heat and make sure we match them in the contest and then behind the ball, win the ball back.

“Everyone has to play their role if you’re going to beat Richmond, especially at the MCG.”

Match preview: Geelong v Richmond

SUMMARY

Prepare for an arm wrestle. The competition's two stingiest sides lock horns in a standout clash, both having plenty to prove. Geelong will be looking to make amends from the previous meeting between the sides in last year's qualifying final, when they were suffocated by the Tigers' pressure. The Cats have taken a leaf out of the Tigers' book from that night when they managed just five goals, conceding an average of 66.7 points per game this season. However, the ability to do it against the Tigers and defend the MCG is another challenge in itself. In round eight, the Cats held Collingwood to five goals; six days later they were caught napping against the Bombers, who piled on 12 majors. The Tigers return from their third interstate trip this season with their third loss, and will be keen to show their midfield is deep enough to contend with the Cats. Last week, Port Adelaide's Ollie Wines, Sam Powell-Pepper, Tom Rockliff and Chad Wingard got the better of the clearance battle, while the ruck division was stretched beyond Toby Nankervis.

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Sunday, June 17, 3.20pm AEST

LAST FIVE TIMES
QF, 2017: Richmond 13.13 (91) d Geelong 5.10 (40) at the MCG
R21, 2017: Geelong 11.14 (80) d Richmond 9.12 (66) at GMHBA Stadium
R21, 2016: Geelong 10.22 (82) d Richmond 12.6 (78) at the MCG
R5, 2015: Geelong 12.13 (85) d Richmond 11.10 (76) at the MCG
R7, 2014: Geelong 11.15 (81) d Richmond 12.4 (76) at the MCG

THE SIX POINTS

1. Gary Ablett wound back the clock last week with 34 disposals (16 contested), eight tackles and a goal in the Cats' win over North Melbourne. Ablett has hit the scoreboard in all nine of his matches against the Tigers as a Cat.

2. Richmond's win in last year's qualifying final was the club's first over Geelong since 2006; the Cats had won 13 straight contests from 2007-17. The Tigers haven't won consecutive clashes with the Cats since 1999-2000.

3. Richmond will be looking to gain an advantage in the centre clearance battle, with a clear discrepancy between the two sides. A big difference could be in the middle; the Tigers are third in centre clearances averaging 13.3, while the Cats are last with an average of 9.6.

4. These two sides have met 42 times at the MCG, with Geelong winning 23 games to 19, including eight of the last nine. The Cats are two wins from four games at the venue this season.

5. A win for the Tigers would see them move to within one game of Melbourne's all-time record of consecutive wins at the MCG. The Demons notched 17 victories from 1955-1956. The Tigers have won their past 15 encounters at the ground, dating back to round 14 last year.

6. Shane Edwards' rise up the Schick AFL Player Ratings continues, with the midfielder/forward now ranked 38th in the competition and fourth at Richmond behind Dustin Martin, Alex Rance and Trent Cotchin. This time last year, he sat at 101.

IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …
A streak of nine games with a goal came to an end last week for Josh Caddy. The former Cat was used in the ruck to start the final term against the Power, and will be hoping for more time in attack against his former side to continue a start to the year that has netted 27 majors.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 13 points.

Cats, Tigers blockbuster will not be on free-to-air television

Geelong Advertiser
14 June 2018

GEELONG and Richmond fans turning on their TV to watch their team in action on Sunday might get a rude shock.

Despite being the only match on Sunday this weekend, the match will not be on free-to-air network Channel 7.

Only fans with Foxtel will be able to watch the match live on TV due to the stretched broadcast arrangements over the bye weekends.

Does this mean they won’t miss all the off the ball holding of Dusty or Cotchin? Or for once they’ll actually give a free kick to Riewoldt?

Yep, funny how the "noise of affirmation" never occurs at our home games despite the Tiger Army being the biggest and loudest crowd in the league  ::).

The extra ump placed inside F50 should be able to pick out Jack being scragged and having his arms chopped but I won't hold my breath either, Tigeritis.

Tigers face tall task against Cats backs

SBS
16 June 2018

Richmond are masters at picking apart opposition defence's but Geelong's back six have proved more difficult than most to break down this season.

The Cats host the reigning premiers at the MCG on Sunday in their first meeting since the Tigers' famous qualifying final win last year.

Chris Scott's fourth-placed side boasts the stingiest defence in the competition, having conceded just over 66 points a game on average on their way to an 8-4 record.

Second-placed Richmond are no slouches with the fourth-ranked defence heading into round 13 but it's their non-traditional forward line that could prove the deciding factor.

"They have that smaller set-up and they bring that manic pressure but for us it's all about being really organised and set behind the ball," Cats defender Jake Kolodjashnij told AAP.

"Knowing our starting points and trying to (secure) the ball when it comes in through the air so we can hopefully take away the influence of those small forwards.

"If we're all contributing, flying for marks and trying to intercept against their smaller forward line then hopefully we can hurt them on the rebound."

That small forward brigade is boosted by the return of Daniel Rioli, who will play his first game of the season after overcoming a foot injury.

Brownlow Medal winner Dustin Martin is also a huge inclusion after a week out with a calf strain.

With pillars Harry Taylor (three games) and Lachie Henderson (none) rarely sighted this year, unheralded Kolodjashnij, Tom Stewart, Jack Henry, Mark Blicavs and company have done a bang-up job.

CAR PARKING UPDATE

Due to heavy rain, car parking capacity in Yarra Park has been reduced to about 25 per cent for #AFLCatsTigers today. Please take public transport or, if driving, seek other parking options.

UPDATE:

Car parking Gate 6 (Punt Rd) has now closed. Gate 5 is the only remaining public gate open, but it is filling quickly due to limited capacity

Whateley: With the way the weather is, the lack of parking for people driving from Geelong for a Cats home game...I think today's crowd could be just around 45,000, which is a real shame. Are you coming to the @MCG today for #AFLCatsTigers? 🌧🏟

Richmond has been inaccurate in front of goal this quarter scoring 1.5, they have missed all their scoring shots from between 40-50 metres.

Daniel Rioli has had a strong first quarter in his first match of the year with five disposals, three contested possessions, three tackles and two inside 50s.

If the City End is still the scoring end today then we've done well that qtr to break even.

Geelong got back in the last 15 mins thanks to winning the contested footy. We're now behind 117 - 121. Still well behind in the clearances. Dimma would be pointing that out in the huddle.

Very important win going into the bye and very good performance by the boys in the wet.

Best: shedda, Lambert, rance, vlastuin and Amigos.

Also thought Higgins looked very promising playing in the middle would like to see more of that. Macintosh and broad poor again, not gonna judge Garthy harshly on his first game. Prestia back after the bye will be huge.

Hard fought, especially considering we were down almost 3 goals at quarter time. They got everything from the umps when the game was on the line (surprise surprise). Just a little cleaner through the middle of the ground and were able to open up space going forward when we got a run on. I think they got 3 from frees in the 2nd half in a low(ish) scoring affair.

Abblett showed glimpses of his best, but a shadow of the player he was 5 years ago. Perhaps not perfect conditions for him.

Can anyone explain why the Dangerfield smother late in the last wasn't a free kick? Are you just allowed to stand in the protected area until the ump calls play on and then run in to contest?

Not a great day for the umps.
Paid far too many frees given the conditions and completely lost their way in that 3rd qtr which effectively handed back the momentum to the Cats. Our response in that last q was a timely reminder to the rest of the comp that our back to back credentials are well and truly on track. The desire to win hasn’t changed from last year, if anything it’s increased. Floss, Jack G, Shed and Lambert were huge with great cameos from the big 4 and our missing link from 2017 - D Rioli

Don’t know with broady, seems to drop more marks then he takes especially in contested situations. Took a nice one in the fourth but dropped an absolute sitter in the third that i think resulted in a goal against us.

Undoubtedly that apologist for poor umpiring Steve Hocking will come out and try to spin it as being the right call.

But I have been very critical of Butler giving away soft 50m penalties for less than that effort of Dangerfield appeared. Bizarre decision.

But I reckon Dangerfield was protected species No.1 today. Got Rance with front on contact in a marking contest when the ball was a lot more than 5m away, and Geelong still got the free kick.

Geelong can go off now and lick their wounds, but one thing they can be thankful for is that Towner wasn't out there today.

Imagine him rampaging in the forward line in those conditions. Geelong would have finished with multiple casualties.

Yes agree. Rance was excellent watching him just guide the young fella all game showing him the ropes thought they both did a great job.

I thought Grimes was just rick solid. Vlaustin is just so cool under pressure loved his game also.

I though Edwards was superb and lambert really stepped up today when Cotchin and Dusty were pretty well held all day. Short continues his great season.

In the forward half Riewoldt was excellent today as was Rioli.

Grigg was good nice running today but his helicopter kicks annoy me. Cotchin battled hard but it wasn’t his day today but he was excellent in the last quarter. Dusty battled all day and had a rare bad day by his standards.  Suprisingly BEllis was ok but still didn’t lay a tackle on a wet day is also surprising. Macintosh needs a rest in the reserves
Conca was terrible and I couldn’t watch when he got the ball and was extremely nervous even the very few times he actually hit a target or kicked to advantage, he needs to go.

I’ve got to say that Danger is a fantastic player just awesome to watch him play.

Fantastic effort today, thought it was our best most complete performance of the season and no coincidence it happened with Rioli back. Always loved Dan but today showed how much we miss him and how much he adds to the side, he makes other players better.

Good on Garth today in his debut, really really solid.

Thought our best today was Shed, Floss, Grimes, Rance, Lambert, Rioli. Tbh everyone played a good game apart from Macca who continues to struggle.

From Robbo's "likes and dislikes" tackle column:

1. Speed always kills

Immense game at the MCG and the Tigers won again with speed and pressure. In the last quarter, Jason Castagna kicked the penultimate goal after winning a sprint from centre half-forward. Daniel Rioli then chased Mitch Duncan and pinned him in a tackle before kicking the final goal. They were huge moments in a high-pressure game. It was typical Tigers — Alex Rance dominated at the back, the leaders stood up in the final term, the smalls tackled ferociously (Jack Graham 13, Rioli eight) and Jack Riewoldt competed in the air, which brought the crumbers into the contest. It’s a game plan ideal for the MCG.

3. Inexperience caught out the Cats

Not much to be critical of in a cracking game, but when it had to be won, it was the younger Tigers who were steady and the younger Cats who couldn’t get involved.

Chris Scott explains approach to Nick Vlastuin in Richmond v Geelong game

Ben Waterworth,
FOX SPORTS
19 June 2018

GEELONG coach Chris Scott has opened up on the tough, crucial conundrums his coaching panel faced as Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin ran amok on Sunday afternoon.

It came as Scott confirmed luckless forward Lincoln McCarthy had suffered a “minor strain of his hamstring” and would miss the next two to four weeks.

Vlastuin received nine votes in the AFL Coaches’ Association Player of the Year award after his stellar performance inspired his side to an 18-point victory over the Cats. He racked up 21 disposals, six rebounds, 481m gained and four intercept marks, while he also finished with game-high marks (11) and intercepts (11).

Vlastuin was a constant source of frustration for Cats fans, thwarting many Geelong forward forays as he stood loose at true centre-half back.

All-Australian captain Alex Rance and reliable fullback Dylan Grimes were also important interceptors for the Tigers, which left Scott and the Cats’ coaching panel with ample headaches.

“It’s much easier said than done to make him completely accountable when Rance, in particular is back there as well and it depends on the part of the ground as well,” Scott told Fox Footy’s AFL 360.

“Really the only way to keep those guys absolutely accountable was to play forwards well ahead of the ball — which is one way to go, but it just opens you up defensively. Those conversations were being had in the box repeatedly.
Nick Vlastuin was the loose defensive man.

“But (the Tigers) were having their problems at the other end with the same thing at stages during the game. That’s where in conditions like that, the territory battle becomes really important and that was probably one part where we were pretty comprehensive in the centre clearances but just couldn’t make the most of that field position.”

Asked if the Cats would allow Vlastuin that much space again, Scott said: “No … there are ways that we could make it a little bit harder for him. But it is a trade-off.

“I think even in retrospect, we certainly wouldn’t have changed too much through the structure, but some of the specifics around it to make it a bit harder for Vlastuin and Rance I think would be something we should look into.”

Despite the Tigers’ victory, the Cats didn’t lose many admirers throughout the game, proving they’ll be among the Tigers and other flag contenders this season.

Scott paid tribute to the Tigers, saying they were better in the big moments.

“There are some parts of the game they are doing better than us. Their work at the fall of the ball, their small forwards in particular did a great job there, Rance and Vlastuin leading their defence were really strong,” Scott said.

“We know we’ve got some work to catch up to their level. The final margin was 18 points, but I felt like it was a little bit closer than that.”

Typical small town, short-sighted type crap. Aside from the fact that a game of that magnitude deserves to be played on Melbournes premier stadium, what about the huge bulk of Geel supporters that live in Melbourne? If you start shutting them out by hosting all your games down in Geel, you cut off half your supporter base. And then, yeah sure you you make a few extra bucks here and there, but then you lose massively on a few games where you might get 80+ through the gates at the G.

And then, teams figure out how to play at your pee poor excuse for a ground if you play 11 games a season there. And you lose touch with the G, where all the finals and GF are played.

Geez, they really are the biggest bunch of whinging jungle bunnies I've ever seen.

One, Geelong request a number of games at the MCG. This is one those games. Read they ask for a number of homes games at the MCG.

Two, they control reserve seat prices. Perhaps if they had charged reserve seats at a reasonable rate more people would have purchased them. Selling a reserve seat at a higher price than people paid for tickets to last year's QF is disgraceful. Some seats on Sunday cost $81 (includes entry) compared to $79 for the final.  I paid $35 for a seat that only cost me $15 for the Pies game.....

Three, the weather was crap. Some people didn't go. That 45k+ turned up is a great result. Ask your own members where they were. And just back to point 2, for every reserve seat sold they got that cash even if people didn't show

Four, get over it!!!!! Betcha there would be very little sooking if they won

Bunch of sooks

What no Conca or Ellis in the votes?

By the way some on here were spruiking their games I was certain I was going to see the coaches give them high votes.  :shh   :rollin

WP, a critic of Ellis, has given him some recognition for his game on Sunday. He played well. Really well.

Why knock it? Because you never really seem to state your case with any type of football nous. You're the main "Conca's poo, bring in Miles even though they don't play the same role" type dude

 ;D

Conca is a liability. Turns the ball over and makes too many poo decisions which make it way harder for his teammates. Not the type of player you want in finals type pressure.

B. Ellis did have an ok game although no tackles and had the lowest pressure rating of any player on the ground but was good in last years finals but he’s a scaredy cat and hardly ever kicks the ball forwards, frustrating considering he can actually kick the footy. But his first option is always backwards and sideways. He’s not proactive, taking Houli’s position but unlike Houli doesn’t ever take the game on so it’s left to other players unfortunately like Conca luckily we have Short and Vlaustin that can actually take the game on out of defensive 50.
I’d rather see Ellis on a wing.

You can love them if you want but I don’t like when BEllis poops his pants time and time again.
I also don’t like when Conca constantly makes stupid decisions, puts his teammates under pressure or gives the ball straight to the opposition.

My opinion do I need your approval?

For reasons I'll never fathom, Ellis seems to be a big game player. He plays better in the big games, like the finals last year. Could be pucker factor, I don't know, but his performance seems to markedly improve when it demanded of him by the occassion.

Why does Hardwick pick Conca do you reckon? I'm not even a big fan of Reece, he frustrates me most weeks. But why do you thin Damien picks him?

Ellis had on okay game? Yeah, righto champ. No point responding to people who are that biased they can't admit when a player peforms at a high level  :shh I admit he was very disappointing earlier in the season. Now you need to give him credit or I may consider reporting you  :shh Not really but you know  :shh

Yes your opinion does need my approval  :shh

Nearly every coach has had their blind spots with certain players over the years, even the best ones, so it's hardly a surprise that Hardwick does as well.....:shh

Richmond’s win over Geelong was a win for football

Alphingtonian

On Sunday afternoon at the MCG, we witnessed an extremely important game take place – not just for the two teams involved, but for the state of the game in general.

Geelong went in having kicked 100 points or more at the MCG in just three of their last 22 games.

While the conditions weren’t favourable to high scoring, it was obvious that the scoring issues and defensive philosophy the Cats have taken at the home of football over the last three years would continue.

By contrast, Richmond had kicked over 100 points or more on the hallowed turf in their past ten matches.

This was a game of anti-football vs football. Geelong tried to strangle Richmond as they’d done to Collingwood in a pitiful game a few weeks before, winning that game with a dismal score of just 66 points.

The Pies knew what to expect back in Round 8 and still found it impossible to break free. Nathan Buckley grew frustrated at questions about his role in the low-scoring contest, explaining post game, “Geelong have a really strong defensive focus, they’re the slowest ball moving side in the comp – by design. So that they don’t lose shape when the ball turns over.”

In the lead-up to last weekend, Chris Scott was challenged on his team’s poor record at the ‘G compared to GMHBA stadium and interstate grounds. Geelong had lost 13 of their last 26 games at the famous arena, in an era when the club has seldom been out of the top four.

His response, as usual, was evasive bordering on patronising, but did give some insight into the defensive mindset he takes toward the MCG.

“It’s a reasonable observation to say we haven’t been quite as good at the MCG as we have down at Geelong for example, or even interstate as well,” Scott said.

“Making it hard for them to score is clearly a priority…it’s much much wider than it is down here (GMHBA) so it is different.”

The Cats’ slow ball-movement and stoppage-based defensive game has become so predictable I was able to see it coming before the season even started with this little passage from my season preview: “The Cats certainly won’t be relying on quick transition… for the lion’s share of their scoring opportunities in 2018 – especially at wider grounds like the MCG. Instead, a rolling maul will be the Geelong way in most of their MCG games this season.”

Jonathan Brown backed this up in the commentary during the weekend’s game. Following Geelong forcing a boundary throw-in, he said, “This is good, this is Geelong’s strength so they need to create boundary throw ins, a stop play, get their numbers back to where the ball is and just start again and just work their way down the field and get it into their forward half.”

Who wouldn’t want to see that kind of electric footy!

This tiresome gameplan has come about because of the side’s inability to read trends in the game, pursuing a list management strategy which values physical strength and ball-winning ability over speed and dynamism – highlighted perfectly with the selection of Lachie Fogarty over West Coast dynamo Liam Ryan in the 2017 draft.

The Cats have built a tall, strong, physical list that’s almost impossible to beat at the narrow GMHBA, but one that’s hopelessly exposed again and again on the majestic wings of the MCG, where attacking flair and speed rule.

The question posed on Sunday was would Richmond be caught in Geelong’s dour anti-football, unable to bring life to the game as had happened to the Pies?

Luckily, run, carry and dare won the day over the stop-start Cats who barely pieced together anything resembling fluent play after quarter time, relying on three goals from free kicks to keep them in it, while they spent the majority of their energy attempting not to lose the game rather than win it.

Geelong deserve credit for being the best defensive team in the league but the spectacle they provide with their stoppage-based, kick-down-the-line footy and unwillingness to take the game on lest they should expose their defence is painful to watch.

The Tigers showed why Geelong have only won three finals from 11 in the last six years – because in high-intensity games, you simply don’t have the luxury of slow ball-movement. The pace of the game is forced upon you and if you’re not used to high-intensity footy, you can’t be expected to really compete when the whips are cracking.

Richmond should be commended for saving the state of the game on the weekend, shining briliantly with their attacking footy on a sodden, dreary day.

The Tigers kicked six of seven goals during the second and third quarters, completely dominating the contest, often gliding across turf, with their speed on transition producing poetic pieces of play that defied the conditions.

When these teams meet again, the true gap between them will be exposed. A let’s hope it is, because if ultra-defensive footy like Geelong’s starts to win finals and grand finals at the expense of footy like Richmond’s, then God help us all!
